Dear readers, last Cyril and Methodius Route newsletter was launched in May 2015. This issue contains information and news Secretariat of an Interest Association of Legal Entities “European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius” (ECRCM Association) accumulated since that time.

CM CELEBRATIONS 2015 IN NITRA (SLOVAKIA) The three days program of city festival “Nitra, lovely Nitra”, Pribina and Cyril and Methodius celebrations, which took place from 3rd till 5th July 2015, attracted thousands of people. Organizers focused on the spiritual message of the Byzantine mission with the stress on personality of St Methodius. (more on Page 3)

New projects proposals for the Cyril and Methodius Route Members of the Association of Cyril and Methodius Cultural Route are active in preparation of new projects within first calls of Structural Funds Programmes on cross-border and transnational level.

THE FOURTH CULTURAL ROUTES SUMMER SEMINAR IN BAD IBURG Network if EICR on sustainable cultural tourism product development, networking and leadership, funding and crowdfunding, heritage interpretation and storytelling.

Candidates worked on their certification files with the help of the newly-published guide to cultural routes design and management and with the assistance of the team of the Institute and certified routes.

The 4th Council of Europe Cultural Routes Summer Seminar was hosted in June by the Megalithic Cultural route in the framework of the HECTOR Erasmus+ project coordinated by the Institute. Fifty participants, representing certified routes, new projects from all over Europe including Cyril and Methodius Cultural Route, students, universities and partners of the Erasmus+ HECTOR attended the seminar Bad Iburg in Germany.

Cyril and Methodius Cultural Route is presented as candidate Cultural Route of Council of Europe since participating in the summer seminar 2015.

PRESENTATION OF CYRIL AND METHODIUS CULTURAL ROUTE Travel exhibition of Cyril and Methodius Cultural Route in the Senate of the Czech Republic Another travel exhibition of the European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius was opened in the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic on 14th July 2015. The exhibition was installed in the aisle of the Vice-Chairman of the Senate till 28th July 2015. Currently, it is opened discussion to install the exhibition at Prague Castle, the seat of the President of the Czech Republic. Senators, representatives of the Ministry of Regional Development, CzechTourism Agency, Prague Information Centre and Press attended the opening exhibition of the European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic on 14th July in order to receive information about this ambitious international project and discuss its implementation on national, cross-border and transnational level in various Structural programmes of the European Union.

PARTICIPATION OF CM ROUTE IN PARTNERS EVENTS City festival Nitra, lovely Nitra 2015 The three days program of city festival “Nitra, lovely Nitra” 2015, Pribina and Cyril and Methodius celebrations, which took place from 3rd till 5th July 2015 in Slovakia, attracted thousands of people. Festival was dedicated to important historical and present personalities of Nitra. Organizers and partners focused on the spiritual message of the Byzantine mission with the stress on personality of Saint Methodius within the celebration of 1200 years from his birth and 1130 years from his death.

Conference of Saint Methodius and Christianization task of Byzantine mission Conference of Saint Methodius and Christianization task of Byzantine mission associated with the public presentation of European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius was held in Concert Hall of County House of Nitra Self-governing Region on 3rd July 2015 during the starting event of the three days Pribina and Cyril and Methodius celebrations in Nitra and its surroundings.

The morning program offered to participants of the conference the lectures of renowned historians and archaeologists. Martin Homza lectured about the motives of missionaries Cyril and Methodius. Matuš Kučera gave a lecture on functioning of religious organizations in the time of the Great Moravian Empire, in which he outlined the importance of Saints Cyril and Methodius as people who raised the first generation of intellectuals in our country.

Their mission and tradition, which was founded, is part of the heritage, on which European civilization has grown up.

Jan Lukačka talked about relations of Rome and Archbishops Methodius and Svatopluk. Viliam Judák approached the issue of Esztergom ritual as a result of the efforts of Cyril and Methodius for liturgy in the language of Slavonic people.

Matej Ruttkay presented the oldest archaeological evidence of Christianity in the Slovak Republic and Alexander Ruttkay the genesis and dating of the oldest rotundas in the Slovak Republic in terms of archaeological research.

Viliam Judák, the Nitra bishop, pointed out that the efforts of the missionaries for Slavic liturgy “bore fruit” even later,

when the 16th and 17th centuries began using the so-called Esztergom ritual, allowing the use of Slovak, German and Hungarian (i.e. languages spoken by ordinary people at that time) besides Latin in certain ceremonies. This meant that the “water of life”, which Cyril and Methodius brought, even after a long period “boiled over” and allowed believers to have weddings or baptisms in the language they understand.

Second part of the scientific conference belonged to Dana Daňová, the director of the Association European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius, IALE as well as East Moravian Tourist Authority and her presentation about Cyril and Methodius Route as a Product of Cultural Tourism.

Martin Peterka from the Permanent Secretariat of the ECRCM Association talked about the certification process within the programme “Cultural Routes of Council of Europe” and the ambition of the Cyril and Methodius Cultural Route to apply for the certification. Last but not least, Peter Bednar presented the draft of the Cyril and Methodius Trails in the territory of the Nitra region.

23rd nationwide festival of Christian Theater “Gorasd’s Močenok” The gates for the nationwide festival of Christian theatre Gorasd’s Močenok were opened for the 23rd time for all, who are attracted by the Christian theatre and culture.

Those could choose from a rich program from 25th till 29th July. Program was composed not only for competition performances, but also for the accompanying events related to the theme and mission of the festival. Many of these events were focused on the 250th anniversary from the consecration of the Saint Clement Church in Močenok.

COMMUNICATION OF CYRIL AND METHODIUS CULTURAL ROUTE Database of the Cultural heritage of the Cyril and Methodius Route is being prepared The Association of the Cyril and Methodius Cultural Route has prepared templates for identification of cultural heritage along Cyril and Methodius Trails. These templates were sent to members and partners, who provide the relevant information about cultural heritage in their territory. The aim is to choose the most important ones from a large complex of monuments, traditions, values and potential. The aim is not to deplete all aspects and components but to define strategic locations, which CM route cannot miss and should be involved in the route in terms of fulfilling the theme of the Route: “The Roots of Slavic Culture”. Received data are the basis for the database of tangible and intangible heritage of the Route. Such data will be used on the project, marketing and product level and will be published for members and partners of the Association of Cyril and Methodius Cultural Route.

Welcome to Facebook pages of Cyril and Methodius Cultural Route You have been informed in last newsletter that in parallel with the establishment of website ECRCM it was created the Facebook page Cyril and Methodius Cultural Route https://www.facebook.com/sv.cyrilmethodius/timeline, within which is developed online communication and presentation of prepared and organized events. The texts are mostly published in English. Our intention is to use the Facebook pages also as the marketing tool for promotion of tangible and intangible cultural heritage along the Route through reaching the inspirations from European projects focusing on the cultural route development. To do so, it is necessary to involve those, who could provide the information about such heritage in order to publish them on the Facebook pages.

Cyril and Methodius Cultural Route Web is kept updated Website www.cyril-methodius.eu is being regularly updated with new information about events and activities as well as the presentation of cultural heritage along the Route. Web will be more focusing on tourists, to which it will provide more information about Cyril and Methodius trails that are being developed including presentation of cultural and natural monuments with detailed information. There is a section “recommended trails” in Czech version of the web, which will be also published in English and Slovakia versions. Visitors shall find trails on maps (Google and mapy.cz) divided into stages with their detail description as well as identification cultural monuments as tips for the rest.

ACTIVITIES LEADING TO FULFILMENT OF THE ECRCM IDEA Project “The CM route for the development of cultural activities and cultural tourism“ Due to the high number of believers and high concentration of historical monuments related to St. Cyril and Methodius and in order to enhance awareness of the historical and spiritual value of these regions, University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava (SK) together with Mendel university in Brno (CZ) prepared a common project called “The CM route for the development of cultural activities and cultural tourism“. The project was implemented in the period of 1/11/2014–1/7/2015 and was co-funded by the Cross-border Cooperation Operational Programme Slovak Republic–Czech Republic. As one of the outputs of the project a brochure was published. The brochure summarizes the most important historical monuments related to St. Cyril and Methodius in South Moravian and Zlin regions, describes current Cyril and Methodius and St. James pilgrim trails and proposes and specifies 3 new trails, 2 of which connect St. James route and CM routes.

Project “Cyril and Methodius, authentic story of our country” A huge promotional campaign focusing on support of places related to the legacy of Great Moravia and the missionaries Cyril and Methodius was launched in May 2015 in Czech Republic. Since May (until November) buses and trolleybuses, covered with advertisement on the CM story, are crossing the streets of Zlin, Brno, Ostrava, Olomouc, Pardubice and Prague. Their eyecatching graphic design together with project website www.cmstory.cz invited the public to visit the places, where promotional roadshows were held. The roadshows aimed to raise awareness of the history and heritage of Great Moravia and legacy of Sts Cyril and Methodius through a four-hour program consisting of theatre performance, traditional craft demonstrations, quizzes and games (geocaching, credential), printed materials (brochures, postcards, books) and demonstrations of period props. The roadshows take the audience through the story of both missionaries in 40 locations of the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Austria and Poland in the period from June to October. To promote roadshows a media campaign was being implemented using public areas for posting, regional media (radio, press) etc. Then there were “school roadshows”, taking place in 35 locations, aiming to present the legacy of Cyril and Methodius and Great Moravia to school children. Besides the website www.cmstory.cz, the Cyril and Methodius project is communicated also through social networks (Facebook) and applications for smart phones (searching for geocaches, using translator to the Glagolitic script, collecting unique electronic tourist stamps). At the roadshow visitors could also get his/her pilgrim passport and collect stamps from various attractions in order to get unique scrolls concealing an illustrative map of Great Moravia.

The last roadshow will was held on Saturday, October 24th, in the area of Slavic fort in Mikulčice. The costs of the project "Cyril and Methodius, authentic story of our country" are estimated to 800 thousand EUR.

3rd November 2015 Project “Route2Roots” submitted Association of ECRCM submitted Expression of Interest of the project Route2Roots to the first Call of the Transnational Danube Programme. Route2Roots project partnership includes 13 actors from 8 countries who all share desire to focus on common treasures presenting our common identity, culture and history. Main objective is to improve capacities for preservation, supporting and valorisation of early medieval cultural heritage to create selective form of sustainable cultural tourism. The challenge is how to preserve early medieval heritage and how to economically exploit it. Such heritage assets could become important source of local development when managed and valorised through transnational cultural route corroborated by specific tourism cultural products. Main project outputs: - 3 educational, training and capacity building tools helping stakeholders to valorise historical heritage within cultural route; - 1 e-platform Slavicpedia collecting resources of early medieval cultural heritage, researched by group of interdisciplinary experts providing high quality theme interpretation; - 1 transnational Route strategy of wise management, preservation, re-use and economic valorisation of the early medieval cultural heritage; - 8 action plans to provide concrete roadmap for enhancement of route in partners territory by institutional engagement and stakeholders' involvement; - 1 knowledge and know-how database regarding GPs.

Project “HEART” submitted East Moravian Tourist Authority submitted Expression of Interest of the project HEART to the first Call of the Transnational Danube Programme. The 12 HEART project partners commit themselves to bring different expertise and experience to achieve the main objective: Establish, implement and disseminate joint methodological framework for improving the synergies between natural and cultural heritage through sustainable development of rural tourism. Danube citizens are aware of a diversity of (in)-tangible treasures rooted in natural and cultural heritage of their region. There is a need to establish unity and joint approach for their protection and sustainable use. Such heritage assets could become an important source of local development in case it is managed & valorized through joint methodologies on transnational basis. Main project outputs: - 3 educational, training and capacity building tools helping stakeholders to valorise Danube heritage - 1 web knowledge database collecting data, researched by group of multidisciplinary experts - 1 tourist portal HEART - 1 transnational strategy of management, preservation, re-use of Danube heritage - 8 action plans to provide concrete activities for enhancement of rural tourism in partners´ territories - 1 transnational network of partners-partner villages

Project „Cyril and Methodius Pilgrimage Trails, Tracing II“ The Zlín Region in cooperation with other partners is preparing a project on laying out the CM trails in border partner regions.

The project is intended to be co-funded by the Cross-border Cooperation Operational Programme INTERREG V-A Slovak Republic – Czech Republic. Its first call for proposals is supposed to be launched in January 2016.

In order to lay out the Cyril and Methodius trails in regions at the border of the Czech and Slovak Republic, two meetings took place at the Regional Authority of the Zlín Region. At the first meeting of representatives of Czech and Slovak partner regions, the East-Moravian Tourist Authority and the Association, held on 8th June 2015, first proposal of the Cyril and Methodius Trails at the border of the Czech and Slovak Republic was discussed. On 20th August 2015 another meeting took place. The representatives of partner regions, the Czech Tourist Club and the Slovak Tourist Club discussed the forms of marking the CM trails. The trails shall run along existing hiking paths and cycle paths. A final layout of the Cyril and Methodius pilgrimage routes at the border of the Czech and Slovak Republic should be set till the end of the year.

Project “Partnership and active institutional networks as a basis for effective management and formation of Cyril and Methodius Route in Moravian-Slovak border area” Despite successes in promoting the idea of development Cyril and Methodius Route, there is still fundamental lack of the development of the whole project, which can be seen in the insufficient institutional structure and linking to relevant stakeholders in order to develop Route based on “bottom-up” principle that bring the necessary improvement to MoravianSlovak border area. In order to ensure the effective and full capitalization of the potential of the area within the development of Cyril and Methodius route, the associations ECRCM prepares a model of institutional governance structures of Cyril and Methodius routes in the border area of the Czech and Slovak Republics as a pilot project, which will be used and applied to other areas as a following stage. Project is preparing within the Cross-border Cooperation Operational Programme INTERREG V-A Slovak Republic – Czech Republic.
