AREA 1: COOPERATION IN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT Description of the Area and Analysis of Needs Even though it might seem that the subject of Saints Cyril and Methodius has already been thoroughly examined and discussed by historians, the existing bibliography suggests otherwise.

Numerous short papers were published on the occasions of anniversaries of their advent to Great Moravia or their death, but a comprehensive study examining their lives has not yet appeared in the Czech Republic or elsewhere in Europe, either – surprisingly enough, as their mission was enormously important not only at its time but even later helped forming identities of Central European nations. This is the question to be discusses under the Area 1: Cooperation in Research and Development of the project European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

The Area 1: Cooperation in Research and Development is primarily focused on two major aspects of basic research – studying the mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius to Great Moravia in the 9th century and examining the impacts of the of Cyril and Methodius legacy in the 19th and 20th centuries. As expected, these activities will not be separated from other activities associated with the Cultural Route and their outcomes will subsequently be exploited in the areas of education and culture in order to bring the greatest possible benefit to the target groups of the project.

As for the scholarly activities related to the Cultural Route, they should primarily consist of the basic research and presenting its outcomes to scholars and to the public. In terms of the basic research, the project will be focused on supporting the scholars/researchers and their activities. In terms of disseminating its outcomes, the project will support the information interface, communication and lecturers/educators.

Guarantors of the Area 1: Cooperation in Research and Development will be the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and Charles University of Prague. Having many-years experience in cooperating with research and development institutions from the Czech Republic and from abroad, both institutions are keen to establish a network of the partner institutions in order to meet the research and scholarly objectives in the field of archaeology, history, architecture, and cultural heritage.

Specific Objectives and Activities of the Area OBJECTIVE 1: COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE LIVES OF SAINTS CONSTANTINE (CYRIL) AND METHODIUS THROUGH THE PRISM OF EUROPEAN HISTOGRAPHY Description of the Objective Scholarly research of the mission of Saints Cyril and Metodius to Great Moravia. The research will be focused primarily on their missionary activities, the way in which they influenced the relations

between Great Moravia; the East Frankish Kingdom, Rome and the Byzantine Empire, and their significance between the 9th and 14th centuries.

Activity 1.1 BASIC RESEARCH OF LIVES AND WORK OF SAINTS CONSTANTINE (CYRIL) AND METHODIUS Description of the Activity 1.1 The basic research of the historical period of Great Moravia focused on the lives of Saints Constantine and Methodius, in a wider European context and through the optics of the following topics:  Constantine and Methodius before their arrival to Great Moravia;  Missions to Great Moravia;  Impacts of Constantine and Methodius’ mission on the relations between Great Moravia; the East Frankish Kingdom, Rome and the Byzantine Empire;  Religious, cultural, church and legal consequences of Constantine and Methodius’ mission;  Importance of Constantine and Methodius’ mission for Europe in the 9th century;  Impacts of Constantine and Methodius’ mission on the developments of Central and SouthEastern Europe from the 10th to 14th century.

Following the basic research, a treatise reflecting the lives and work of Saints Constantine and Methodius will be compiled. The outcomes of the research will be summarised in a bibliography focused on the Great Moravian period, particularly on the lives of Constantine and Methodius viewed in a broader European context.

OBJECTIVE 2: IMPACTS OF THE CYRIL AMD METHODIUS LEGACY ON THE EMANCIPATION OF SLAVIC NATIONS AND CREATION OF THEIR IDENTITIES Description of the Objective Research of the impacts of the Cyril and Methodius tradition and legacy on the forming of identities of the nations of Central, Southern and Eastern Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries and on the subsequent revival and development of modern Slavic languages. During the creation of national identities and, later, national states certain stereotyped patterns of thinking emerged and the past was “invented”, particularly those associated with slightly simplified views of the “traditional” struggle between the Germanic and Slavic tribes. Here the Cyril and Methodius tradition played a significant role as a focal point of self-identification, which is still the case, at least to a certain extent, 6

in the present society. Furthermore, the jubilees of Cyril and Methodius in 1863 and 1885 were a major display of Slavic mutuality and the legacy of the Saints inspired the 19th-century art as well as the 20th-century resistance against the Nazism and Communism in Central Europe.

Activity 2.1 RESEARCH OF THE IMPACTS OF CYRIL AND METHODIUS’ MISSION ON THE FORMATION OF NATIONAL IDENTIITIES Description of the Activity 2.1 Research of existing works dealing with the modern-time perception of the Cyril and Methodius tradition and legacy. The research will cover the following topics:  Impacts of the Cyril and Methodius tradition and legacy on the reviving and defending modern Slavic languages in Central and South-Eastern Europe in the 19th century;  Impacts of the Cyril and Methodius tradition and legacy on the forming of identities of the nations of Central and South-Eastern Europe; their attitude toward Slavic and non-Slavic nations;  19th century’s anniversaries and celebrations associated with Saints Cyril and Methodius and their reception by the society of that time;  The importance of the Cyril and Methodius tradition and legacy in the 20th century; the role of Saints Cyril and Methodius as symbols of the resistance against the Nazi and Communist regimes;  Current perception of the Cyril and Methodius legacy by the post-communist society;  The role of Cyril and Methodius as co-patron saints of Europe;  The symbolic role of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the unifying Europe.

Due to the stays of these experts, the quality of educational programmes will become higher, the output of the most recent scholarly research will be included in the curricula on all levels of education, and educational programmes will be further developed in terms of developing an individual approach to specific topics, heightening the awareness of the scope of the examined issues, and the sense of belonging to the international scholarly community will be strengthened.

160 people Pupils and Students Pupils and students of elementary and secondary schools and university students of history and humanities should actively broaden their current curricula and embrace new knowledge and approaches to be able to actively participate in scholarly debates to an appropriate level. Due to seminars and lectures, the pupils and students will meet scholars and experts from all participating countries as well as countries in which the Cyril and Methodius legacy is reflected in the scholarly discourse. The lectures and seminars will be organized by universities and academic institutions. The expert lectures and seminars will be held by scholars from abroad, thus contributing to the international dimension of the 10

20 schools, 3000 students General Public All people keen to learn more about the advent and mission of the Slavic Apostles, who turned Central Europe into the cradle of Slavonic literacy and incorporated the entire region into the sphere of European culture.

Due to lectures and seminars organized by universities and partner institutions will present to the general public the Cyril and Methodius legacy viewed in a wider context, both from the point of view of European and Czech historians. The travelling exhibition, public lectures, monographs and the interactive map will be prepared for this target group.

Guarantor of the Area The guarantors of the area 1: Cooperation in Research and Development will be the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and Charles University of Prague.

The Czech Academy of Sciences is one of the oldest and most important academic institutions in the Czech Republic. Its origins date back to the late 1700s. Its main fields of activities are the basic research in a wide range of natural, technical, human and social sciences. Its departments are also active in the field of education, particularly in educating young scholars and researchers, postgraduate studies, and lecturing at universities. The Academy also actively cooperates with institutions of applied R&D and with industry.

The cooperation under the Area 1: Cooperation in Research and Development within the framework of the project “European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius“ will be primarily focused on humanities and social sciences, specifically history, human studies, and philology.

Charles University of Prague is the largest, best-known and internationally renowned university of the Czech Republic. Currently it consists of 17 faculties (14 based in Prague, 2 in Hradec Králové, 1 in Pilsen), 3 colleges, 6 other educational, scientific and R&D institutions, as well as numerous information service institutions and 5 utility departments. Its activities consist mostly of science, research and development. The University keeps fostering and developink its prestigious status of a so-called Scholarly University.

The cooperation under the Area 1: Cooperation in Research and Development within the framework of the project “European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius“ will fall within the responsibility of the Faculty of Philosophy, Charles University of Prague.

Partners/Stakeholders The European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius is one of crucial projects under the chapter Cooperation in Research and Development. Being a multi-disciplinary project, it will cover the fields of archaeology, history, architecture, and cultural heritage. The comprehensive topic of the Cyril and Methodius mission necessitates a multi-faceted approach, as the topic should be studied from the point of view of literary studies, philosophy, theology, history of art etc. To this end, a network of partner institutions from various European countries will be established, which will assure attaining the research objectives in all aforementioned areas.

Cooperation – Established Contacts Partners from Abroad International cooperation with numerous universities from the below countries has bee established under the Erasmus Mundus European projects, particularly as part of common study programmes (follow-up Master curricula): Erasmus Mundus TEMA: European Territories – Identity and Development, Erasmus Mundus: Central European Studies.

The major objective for the future is developing the cooperation in common projects and European programmes, with a higher share of international participation of non-academicians, especially postgradual students.

Summary Basic preconditions of the scholarly research and international cooperation have been clearly defined as part of general objectives of the project “European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius”.

The most important task is deepening the sense of the common European identity in the countries influenced by the Cyril and Methodius mission by means of scholarly research in the fields of archaeology, history, architecture, and cultural heritage. Another task, closely related to the first one, is exploiting the Cyril and Methodius legacy and tradition as an instrument of sharing common values by multiple European cultures. Major research projects should portray the development of these values. The historical research of the gradual changes that the perception of the Cyril and Methodius tradition has underwent in countries of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe will undoubtedly be a must.

Partners/stakeholders with whom the guarantors of the Area have established contacts under Erasmus Mundus European Projects will participate in the Cooperation in Research and Development activities of the project “European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius”.

Activities falling within the Area 1: Cooperation in Research and Development will be funded from several sources, primarily from funds set aside for financing the basic research. These are, for the most part, basic research grants distributed by the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic. Additional funding will come from EU Structural Funds through operational programmes.

AREA 2: STRENGTHENING THE AWARENESS, HISTORICAL LEGACY AND EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE Description of the Area and Analysis of Needs The advent to Great Moravia of the Slavonic Apostles, Saints Cyril and Methodius in 863 is considered a watershed event in the history of the Czech Republic as well as most Slavonic nations.

Their mission had a crucial impact on the society, culture, education, literacy and religion of the entire region. The project of the proposed European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius is therefore a vital instrument in perpetuating the Cyril and Methodius tradition and drawing inspiration from their legacy.

The sub-area 2 of the project ‘Strengthening the Awareness, Historical Legacy and European Cultural Heritage’ highlights the Christian roots of Europe and their legacy, with the aim at the restoration and use of church monuments and upholding of Christian traditions and culture in the countries, in which Saints Cyril and Methodius, the Co-Patron Saints of Europe had once taught and preached.

The main objective of the area is principally focused on deepening the general public's awareness of the historical significance of the Cyril and Methodius tradition and developing the European cultural heritage, intercultural dialogue and Europeanism. To this end, international exhibition projects and workshops will be organized and books, brochures and multimedia materials will be published, while other activities will be focused on training and education and restoration of historical monuments and archaeological sites.

The guarantor of the area is the Museum of Moravian Slovakia, Uherské Hradiště, due to its manyyears experience in preserving the cultural heritage of Great Moravia. The Museum is willing to establish a network of partner organizations together with other entities from the fields of cultural heritage and education, which will participate in attaining the objectives associated with strengthening the awareness, historical legacy and European cultural heritage.

Fostering an interest in the given subject through portraying significant historical and cultural events in a wider context.

Building up on an intercultural dialogue based on the Cyril and Methodius legacy and making use of it in our current effort to unify Europe. In accordance with strategic documents issued by the European 14

Union and European Council that call for an educational reform, it is essential to improve the general knowledge of history of the European integration and contribution of prominent figures of European nations to this breakthrough process, and deepening the awareness of European citizenship and of the contribution of different European nations to the history and integration of our continent.

Proposed Projects EXHIBITION ‘VELIGRAD – FINDINGS FROM CZECH PRINCELY GRAVES’ Description Findings from numerous graves excavated at Great Moravian graveyards in Staré Město and Uherské Hradiště – Sady suggest that the location was largely inhabited by nobility and gentry. The exhibition aims at presenting to the public the unique artefacts found in the rich graves at the sites ‘Na Valách’ in Staré Město and ‘Sady’ in Uherské Hradiště. The exhibition will take place in the premises of the National Cultural Monument – the Great Moravia Heritage Monument in Staré Město as part of celebrations of the 1150 anniversary of the advent to Great Moravia of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

THE INTERNATIONAL TOURING EXHIBITION ‘SAINTS CYRIL AND METHODIUS AND EUROPE’S CHRISTIAN ORIGINS’ WITH THE PARTICIPATION OF PARTNER COUNTRIES Description The highlight of the project – a unique international touring exhibition – will show and recapitulate the Christian traditions and culture of countries in which the missions of Saints Cyril and Methodius took place (apart from Great Moravia, the teachings of the Apostles also influenced other parts of Central, South-Eastern and Southern Europe). Each of the countries in question will exhibit the best artefacts dating back to the given period of time and related to different fields of scholarly work (archaeology, history, art, philology, ethnology etc). A presentable catalogue in multiple language versions should be published.

Proposed Projects ‘IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF SAINTS CYRIL AND METHODIUS’ – TRAVEL TO LEARN Description Travelling to selected archaeological sites accompanied with lectures for the public and concluded with a holy mass at the Great Moravia Heritage Monument in Staré Město, optionally, at the Sadská Height. OBJECTIVE 2: MAINTAINING AND EXPLOITING THE EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE; RENOVATION OF CHURCH AND SECULAR MONUMENTS Description of the Objective The objective is aimed at maintaining and further developing major church monuments and archaeological sites in the partner countries of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe that had been influenced by teachings of Saints Cyril and Methodius, and developing necessary infrastructure associated therewith. These activities will result in renewing the cultural monuments and creating, modernizing and extending the existing infrastructure that supports the development of cultural and pilgrimage tourism along the Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

Activity 2.1 RESTORATION OF MAJOR MONUMENTS Description Restoring and utilizing the monuments associated with the missions of Saints Cyril and Methodius in respective partner countries is one of chief opportunities of the project in terms of investments and capital constructions.

Proposed Projects FOUNDING THE CENTRE OF THE EUROPEAN CULTURAL ROUTE OF SAINTS CYRIL AND METHODIUS IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC Description The Great Moravia Heritage Monument in Staré Město appears to be a suitable location for the proposed international presentation Centre of the European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius. A planned extension to the existing building should house state-of-art facilities and presentation rooms, as well as a research centre with study depositories, exhibition rooms, screening rooms, a specialized library, study rooms and archaeological workshops.

The proposed Centre that should be established at the Great Moravia Heritage Monument will pursue the following activities: 

The Museum of Moravian Slovakia, Uherské Hradiště, is an important institution among Czech and Moravian museums. Founded in 1914, it has focused from the very beginning on ethnology and archaeology, later also on art and history. Thanks to its vast research and collecting activities covering the entire ethnographic area of Moravian Slovakia, the museum is an institution of a regional importance. It consists of the main building at Smetana Park (Smetanovy sady), Museum Galery (Otakarova Street), the Great Moravia Heritage Monument in Staré Město, Aircraft Museum in Kunovice, and Open Air Museum of Rural Architecture in Topolná. Reconstructed foundations of Great Moravian shrines can be seen at freely accessible archaeological sites in Uherské Hradiště Sady, Staré Město, and Modrá u Velehradu.

Summary The sub-area of the project ‘Strengthening the Awareness, Historical Legacy and European Cultural Heritage’ highlights the Christian roots of Europe and their legacy, with the aim at the restoration and use of church monuments and upholding of Christian traditions and culture in the countries associated with the mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius. The proposed activities are aimed at strengthening links between nations and communities sharing the common roots and at instilling the European identity, maintaining the cultural heritage, restoring and utilizing church and secular monuments, and further developing the cultures associated with the legacy of Saints Cyril and Methodius – this all with regard to development of tourism.

Many of the aforementioned activities and events (exhibitions, publishing multimedia materials, books and brochures, educational programmes etc.) associated with the anniversary of the advent of Saints Cyril and Methodius have already been launched, most of them in the Czech Republic. The major tasks to tackle are: founding the Centre of the European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius at the Great Moravia Heritage Monument, restoration of archaeological sites, and the project of the travelling exhibition. Activities targeted on developing the dialogue between the partner countries will contribute to this end as well.

The guarantor has already established contacts with numerous partners/stakeholders; however, more partners should be contacted, particularly from abroad, in order to meet all the specified objectives.

Activities falling within the Area 2 will be funded from several sources, primarily from the EU Cohesion Funds, national budget and regional budget.

AREA 3: CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL EXCHANGE OF YOUNG EUROPENS Description of the Area and Analysis of Needs The general objective of the Area 3: Cultural and Educational Exchange of Young Europeans consists in supporting the mobility of young people from different ways of life, social background and regions of Europe, and organizing an exchange focused on developing the notion of European citizenship.

The major priority of the area is getting together a network of educational institutions supporting the mobility of the European youths, particularly secondary schools, universities and, possibly, also other educational and scholarly institutions, with the utmost objective of connecting Western and Easter Europe. The topmost priority is engaging the Balkan countries and involving them into the cooperation with countries of Central Europe. On the further stages, the aforesaid institutions from the entire Europe should participate equally.

In order to make the area run smoothly, it will be necessary to create a portfolio of activities addressing specific and actual needs of the target group, i.e. the European youths – pupils of secondary schools and university students between 15 and 26 years of age.

The widest possible scope of areas should be covered (science, culture, art, spiritual activities…) and the activities should at the same time be aimed at developing the notion of European citizenship founded on common history and cultural basis represented by the legacy of Saints Cyril and Methodius. The leader of the area will organize the activities in cooperation with its partners. Roles and responsibilities of different entities must therefore be clearly defined, regular meetings organized, and a time schedule of the activities put together.

As this area is primarily focused on the cultural and educational exchange, the next priority will be setting up an appropriate concept of developing the informal educational activities. When organizing various activities, the development of participants’ key competences must be always taken into consideration and the specific activities should be planned accordingly.

The leader of the Area 3 is the Saints Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology (Palacký University of Olomouc) and the key partners will be Stojanovo Gymnázium (Stojan Grammar School), Velehrad, Arcibiskupské gymnázium (Archbishop Grammar School), Kroměříž, and CARITAS VOŠs (Vocational School), Olomouc. Other educational and scholarly institutions and partners will also participate in these activities. When getting together the network of institutions, the importance of the cultural exchange and of connecting the thinking of people of Western and Eastern Europe to a common purpose – “linking the places associated with the mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius and emphasizing Europe’s Christian roots”.

Specific Objectives and Activities of the Area OBJECTIVE 1: DEVELOPING THE YOUTHS’ MOBILITY BETWEEN WESTERN AND EASTERN EUROPE – CREATING A NETWORKOF INSTITUTIONS PARTICIPATING IN THE YOUNG EUROPEANS’ EXCHANGE Description of the Objective With respect to the general concept of the project, the Area 3 is aimed at supporting the mobility of young Europeans, in particular the educational and cultural exchange between Eastern and Western Europe and strengthening the contacts between participating institutions.

The Area also includes some additional activities supplementing the existing exchange programmes for young Europeans. The offered programmes should stimulate activities of young people, both individuals and groups, focused on creating a concept of European citizenship.

Activity 1.1 INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE STAYS The activity International Exchange Stays tries to prepare conditions for the exchange stays that would be longer than short-term tours but shorter than long-term study stays or work sojourns abroad. They are always focused on professional issues in which specific groups of participants are interested. The exchange stays may be facilitated by an existing network of partner institutions from abroad, which should be extended step by step. The outcomes of these exchanges will not be separate work or study outputs (e.g. passing an exam etc.), but Czech participants will get acquainted with the milieu of a host country and people who may become their professional colleagues. The same will apply to participants from abroad staying in the Czech Republic. Establishing personal contacts will be beneficial and inspiring for experts in the concerned fields of activities and for their work.

Project 1.1.1 STUDENTS’ EXCHANGE STAYS Description During the planned 4 to 6 week’s stays, the participating students (both those from the Saints Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology, Palacký University of Olomouc, and from abroad) can learn about different approaches to the Cyril and Methodius tradition taken in various parts of Europe and emphasize the common legacy and values mediated by their mission, which link many countries of Europe. In addition, participants from abroad will have an opportunity to get acquainted with authentic locations of where their mission had taken place.

It seems desirable to establish and/or broaden the cooperation with institutions that, like the C&M Faculty of Theology, are particularly interested in the Cyril and Methodius legacy, either in terms of studies or perpetuating and developing the values established by their mission to Central and Eastern Europe. Students of all departments of the C&M Faculty of Theology (i.e. theology, social work, and social pedagogy) would enrol as guest students at partner institutions abroad and vice versa.

Project 1.1.2 YOUNG CLERGYMEN’S EXCHANGE STAYS Description Young graduates from the Saints Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology, Palacký University of Olomouc should have an opportunity to learn about different approaches to the Cyril and Methodius legacy taken in other European countries and, vice versa, participants from abroad will get acquainted with the way in which the same legacy is perceived in Moravia and visit authentic locations of where the Cyril and Methodius’ mission had taken place.

Due to one or two week’s exchange stays in partner countries, the participants can acquire immediate experience, both professional and social and cultural, as they will assist in religious and pastoral activities in the place of their stay.

The exchange stays may be a stimulus for establishing and intensifying the contacts between parishes and dioceses across Europe and are very likely to result in a further development of pilgrimage tourism, which may stress the importance of Moravia as a cradle of the culture of Slavic nations.

This all will strengthen the awareness of European identity among the participants, which is extremely important, as clergymen have a profound influence on people to whom they serve.

OBJECTIVE 2: PREPARING SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES FOCUSED ON CONNECTING WESTRN AND EASTERN EUROPE Description of the Objective This objective is aimed at preparing and developing activities promoting and facilitating contacts between young Europeans from the so-called East and West. Such activities are closely linked with participants’ curricula and professions, thus helping them deepening their knowledge through contacts and discussions with their colleagues from abroad.

Activity 2.1: SPECIFIC ACTIVITIS LINKUING WESTERN AND EASTERN EUROPE This activity is aimed at developing the notion of European citizenship is primarily focused on young Europeans, notably secondary school pupils and university students. It highlights their specific needs and therefore each activity can be widely utilized in practice. At the same time, participation may be offered to disadvantaged young people or to those lacking opportunities.

The chief objective of the activity is developing and furthering the Cyril and Methodius legacy in the wider European historical and cultural context, while strengthening the notion of Europeanism among the pupils and students at the same time. The European dimension is obvious, as partner institutions will be involved and topics of all-European importance will be addressed. Following the footsteps of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the activity is aimed at examining and developing basic concepts of unified Europe: freedom, democracy, respect for human rights and civic freedoms.

Project 2.1.1 SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS’ STUDY STAYS ABROAD Description The students should be given the unique opportunity of spending some time at studies abroad while preparing for their future professions. Such study stays abroad will be very helpful both for their professional and personal life. They will bring the acquired know-how back to their schools, thus improving the general level of education, and after their graduation, also to their jobs in Czech social services and social work institution, exploiting their knowledge in developing and implementing new processes in this area. Specifically, the study stays will last from two to three months (without an interruption). They will take place in Serbia, Macedonia, Romania, Slovakia, Germany, Greece and Ukraine. They will bring added value in terms of international teamwork experience, sharing professional, social and cultural experience, and establishing contacts with future colleagues – young social workers from abroad.

Its major objective is strengthening the graduates’ civic engagement through a platform that should create a link between relevant institutions and their potential employees, disseminate information among the professional public and laity, give awards for major endeavours in the field of social work, promoting mutual cooperation between the young graduates, and provide the graduates and students of the last year with career consulting.

The students and academics will come from countries of the Balkans and Eastern Europe associated with the Cyril and Methodius legacy, who are active in the field of social care and related activities.

The output of the project will be a network of universities coming from regions participating in the European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius and cooperating on specific issues in the area of social work studies. The planned activities will include: exchange stays, common conferences, and articulating and researching common problems.

Activity 3.1 INFORMAL EDUCATION IN CULTURE AND MEDIA The activity is based on a notion that education, in a wider sense, is more than mere “school instruction” and can be attained through more relaxed activities associated with learning, studying and developing one’s skills. Informal meetings are suitable instruments of developing young people’s skills. Participation of students from abroad is particularly beneficial, since it will broaden horizons of young people. Developing artistic activities, which are attractive for the young ones, is especially fruitful. The issue of the media is also very topical due to the impact they have on the way in which teenagers perceive the world.

Project 3.1.1 INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF SPIRITUAL MUSIC, VELEHRAD Description Choirs of secondary schools rum by the church, both from the Czech Republic and from abroad, participate in the festival, hosted by the choir of Stojan Grammar School, Velehrad. Concerts are open to the public. The highlight of the Festival is a Holy Mass accompanied by songs orchestrated and sung by multiple choirs. The project makes it possible for young singers to meet each other, share their experience in choral singing, strengthen the cooperation between choirs, improve communication in foreign languages, and uphold their spiritual development. Due to the accompanying programme, participants will get acquainted with Velehrad, the location closely related to the history of Great Moravia and Saints Cyril and Methodius tradition.

Project 3.1.2 THE VELEHRAD CAMERA – YOUNG FILMMAKERS’ CONTEST Description The “Velehrad Camera” tries to motivate young filmmakers and attract them to a creative work with a camera by offering interesting topics, particularly those reflecting the very idea of the European Cultural Route – the interconnection between the Christian East and West. The young filmmakers’ contest is organized by Stojanovo Gymnázium (Stojan Grammar School), Velehrad with the support from TV Noe. The award ceremony is part of a Holy Mass celebrated in the Basilica of Velehrad and transmitted by TV Noe: awarded films are screened and commented by expert jurors. The participants can see films made by other filmmakers both from the Czech Republic and from abroad and take part in discussions with experts (in Czech as well as in foreign languages). Accompanying programme consists of workshops focused on media and filmmaking and lead by experienced lecturers.

Project 3.1.3 FILM AMD MEDIA SCHOOL Description A one-week workshop called “The Film and Media School” is organized by Stojanovo Gymnázium (Stojan Grammar School), Velehrad for participants from the Czech Republic and from abroad. Due to their involvement in the work of creative teams, they will develop their competences in communication and ability to use digital technologies. Tutored by experienced lecturers and teachers, the participants will be able to learn many new things from behind the scenes of film and photography and try to work in a cutting room, photographic studio, animator’s studio etc. The participants may freely choose the subject of their work and their initiative is fostered. The ambience of Velehrad is inspiring thanks to the omnipresent Cyril and Methodius legacy. A series of art photographs, short film or animated film may be a result of a week of diligent work.

Project 3.1.4 PROJECT WEEK: IMPACT OF MEDIA ON YOUNG PEOPLE Description The workshop has been included into the programme of the “Project Week” held annually by Arcibiskupské gymnázium (Archbishop Grammar School), Kroměříž in the end of a school year. The media workshop is opened to participants from abroad, who may take part in discussions and preparing the project examining the impact of media on young people.

Activity 3.2 INFORMAL EDUCATION – A DIALOGUE BETWEEN SCIENCE AND CHRISTIANITY The dramatic development of modern technologies accompanied with unprecedented scientific findings applied in practical life (e.g. genetically modified food, new practices in medicine, etc.) is a major issue of our times, as well as related questions concerning the origins of the world and the role of humans as intelligent beings (e.g. the intelligent design, reflections on Darwinism, Creationism, etc.). Such questions, and many others, are often very closely linked with our everyday life. It is therefore desirable to respond by offering a well-prepared informal educational programme for students of secondary schools and higher education institutions. The participation of students from abroad would be a major asset.

Project 3.2.1 CONFERENCE – STUDENTS’ DIALOGUE BETWEEN SCIENCE AND CHRISTIANITY Description The students’ multi-disciplinary international conference should make it possible for young people to get together and participate in presenting different scientific findings. Organized in cooperation with numerous renowned scholarly institutions and universities, the conference will be attended by secondary school students from the Czech Republic and from abroad. Lecturers will be scholars and experts from theologians, to philosophers, to scientists. Foreign-language lectures read by experts from abroad (mostly in English) will be a valuable experience for the students, and so will be meeting prominent scientists and scholars from the Czech Republic and from abroad and discussing their assumptions. The chief objective will be identifying and discussing the intersections of science and Christianity, defining the areas in which they seem to diverge, and suggesting possible ways of examining and resolving disputable points.

Activity 3.3 INFORMAL EDUCATION IN THE FIELD OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT The current educational system is primarily focused on the performance, success and immediate profit of educated persons. This approach often reduces the process of education to a mere tool rather than being an objective serving the purpose of personal development. With such a limited approach, an individual often gets lost in the middle of his-her knowledge. The proposed programme includes processes highlighting the personal development of young people, either through activities largely neglected throughout a year (foreign languages) or those contributing to a personal reflection over one’s current stage of life and bringing a positive inspiration for the future (spiritual restoration, pilgrimages etc.). Once again, the participation of students from abroad would be a major asset.

Project 3.3.1 HOLIDAY LANGUAGE SCHOOL Description Among other holiday workshops, Stojanovo Gymnázium (Stojan Grammar School), Velehrad offers also an intensive language course. The one-week holidays language school is focused on concentrated study of English or other European languages. Students are divided into groups depending on their skills. The Grammar School teachers do the best to develop all aspect of language knowledge. Conversation lessons should contribute to the development of communication competences, and so will the participation of students from abroad with whom Czech students will have to communicate (most likely in English). The major objective of the course is attracting young Europeans to foreign languages, deepening their knowledge about cultures of other nations, and encourage the debate about relations between the European West and East. Spiritual and leisuretime activities will be part of the programme.

The spiritual restoration is lead by the Grammar School chaplain. The young participants will learn to sense and feel the spiritual dimension of their peers from different cultural milieus, pray and experience the Sacraments both privately and together with others, and prepare for the Easter time.

A weekend pilgrimage organized by Arcibiskupské gymnázium (Archbishop Grammar School), Kroměříž offers to young participants from different countries of Europe a unique spiritual experience encountered during a common pilgrimage between Velehrad and the mount of Svatý Hostýn, Moravia’s two most important places of pilgrimage. A collectively experienced pilgrimage gives the young people an opportunity to meet people of the same age from all over Europe, communicate with them and pray together.

Besides them, the town of Kroměříž abounds with other historical monuments, many of them of religious nature. This activity is aimed at attracting young people from European countries to Kroměříž and experience its history and atmosphere together with their Czech peers and scholars (historians). The incoming visitors should get acquainted with the cultural and historical heritage of the town, particularly with sacred architecture and UNESCO monuments, contemplate the cultural values of the past and present, and develop their communication skills.

Secondary (or elementary) school pupils and university students The target group of the Area 3: Cultural and Educational Exchange of Young Europeans consists primarily of young people between 15 and 26 years of age. Various activities are prepared for secondary school pupils and university students. In case of certain specific activities (e.g. project 3.1.2: The “Velehrad Camera” filmmakers’ contest), pupils of elementary schools may also paricipate, as well as students and graduates of CARITAS VOŠs (Vocational School), Olomouc and C&M Faculty of Theology (project 2.1.2: Further cooperation with graduates from Caritas VOŠs and project 1.1.2: Exchange stays of young clergymen from countries associated with the Cyril and Methodius tradition). The age of participants is specified in annotations describing specific activities.

The project will support groups of young people from partner institutions as well as individuals. Since the promotion of the mobility of young Europeans from the East and West is the chief objective of the area, participants from all European countries should be involved. Cooperation with institutions from the Balkans will be strongly emphasized.

Guarantor of the Area The chief leader of the area is the Saints Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology, Palacký University of Olomouc, whose partners will be other educational institutions: Stojanovo Gymnázium (Stojan Grammar School), Velehrad, Arcibiskupské gymnázium (Archbishop Grammar School), Kroměříž and CARITAS VOŠs (Vocational School), Olomouc. The project predicts setting up a network of other institutions, particularly scientific and educational ones, whose staff will take part in the defined activities. Specifically, the network should link Europe’s secondary schools and universities, as well as other entities like research institutes and libraries whose expert staff will contribute do educational activities implemented as part of this area.

As a number of the defined activities is focused on the spiritual development of participants, various groups of young Christians will be involved as well.

Saints Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology, Palacký University of Olomouc The Faculty of Theology was reunited with Palacký University of Olomouc in October 1990, after four decades of suspension forced by the Communist regime. In 1992 its name was changed from the Faculty of Divinity to the Faculty of Theology and its programme was broadened: besides educating future priests, the Faculty also offers other bachelor and master curricula, postgraduate studies and lifelong education programmes.

Stojanovo Gymnázium (Stojan Grammar School), Velehrad Stojan Grammar School, Velehrad is a four-year secondary school run by the Church. It was founded on 1 September 2004 by the Archbishopric of Olomouc.

The curriculum strongly emphasises foreign languages studies and study stays of pupils in foreign countries. In addition, a personality development project is offered to the pupils. The school has an internationally renowned choir of singers.

Stojan Grammar School is housed in a former Cistercian monastery that was recently renovated. Its ample and spacious classrooms are equipped with state-of-art multimedia devices. It also has special lecture rooms for lessons of natural sciences, foreign languages, art, and computer science, a chapel, relaxation room and fitness gym. Discussions, lectures, concert and festivities take place in the representational rooms: the Slavic Hall, Winter Hall, and Vault.

The school has its own kitchen and canteen that offer meals all the day. The capacity of the youth home is up to 100 beds.

The Children and Youths Leisure Time Centre offers a wide variety of educational, sports and artistic activities.

Arcibiskupské gymnázium (Archbishop Grammar School), Kroměříž The Archbishop Grammar School of Kroměříž is a four- and six-year secondary school run by the Church and founded by the Archbishopric of Olomouc.

It prepares its pupils for further studies at universities of all types. The school has its own library and its pupils can join numerous clubs and groups (“AVE” choir, volleyball, basketball, tennis, baseball, self-defence, aerobic etc.). Besides, the school has a gymnasium, fitness gym, tennis court, volleyball ground, multimedia PC classroom, special lecture rooms, library, students’ cafeteria and two chapels.

The school has its own the youth home with a capacity of 240 beds, kitchen and buffet.

CARITAS VOŠs (Vocational School), Olomouc CARITAS Olomouc – the Higher Vocational School of Social Care – was founded by the Archbishop of Olomouc in 1995 and became a member of a national network of higher vocational schools in the spring of 1996. Since 2000 it has also offered bachelor curriculum – besides the vocational training – in cooperation with the Faculty of Theology of Palacký University, Olomouc.

The school is a regular member of the Association of Social Care Educational Institutions – a club of schools offering high-level vocational and university education in this discipline.

The mission of the CARITAS Olomouc Vocational School is derived from the biblical quotation “Deus caritas est” (God is Love), which governs our relations to other people, particularly the sick, old, disabled and poor ones.

This mission is fulfilled through education, professional preparation, and personal formation of qualified staff that will responsibly perform their duties in the field of social care and other areas of life which charitable, social and humanitarian work is needed. Well aware of its ecumenical dimension, the school is open to all students notwithstanding their faith and denomination.

Summary of the Area The general purpose of the Area 3: Cultural and Educational Exchange of Young Europeans is supporting the mobility of young people from different ways of life, social background and regions of Europe, with the emphasis on developing the notion of European citizenship.

Its strategy is focused on extending an existing network of institutions, particularly educational ones, that would encourage the cultural and educational exchange of young Europeans and offer new forms of informal and professional education in regions liked with the European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

The aforesaid portfolio of currently implemented and prepared projects will be amended, as new partners will be incorporated and their suggestions included.

Activities falling within the Area 3 will be funded from several sources, primarily from the EU Cohesion Funds set aside for the years 2014–2020, national budget and regional budget.

To cover the defined activities, CZK 2.5 million will have to be raised annually.

AREA 4: CONTEMPORARY CULTURAL AND ART PRACTICES Description of the Area and Analysis of Needs The proposed project of the European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius includes also the area of Contemporary Cultural and Art Practices. The all-important historical legacy of the two Apostles embraced in their times a vast range of human activities, from public and political life, to liturgy, culture and, last not least, art in its different shapes. The timeless values stemming from the Christian faith are still reflected in the common European legacy and culture. The new churches and chapels erected in the last two decades clearly show that these values are still valid and inspiring and for today’s architects and “interior decorators”. The Zlín Regional Gallery, being the leading entity of the area, will organize numerous multi-cultural activities focused on searching the “unanimity in diversity” as part of the project.

The chief objective of the area is multi-disciplinary exchange in the field of culture and art between the participating countries. Once created, the network of locations associated with the Cyril and Methodius mission and Europe’s Christian roots will provide an inspiring ambience for contemporary artists to share their experience.

A major effort will be focused on highlighting contemporary cultural and art practices in terms of skills and creativeness (visual art, acting, creative craftsmanship, architecture, literature). Everybody concerned in these matters will be able to learn more about most recent trends in new works of Central and Eastern European artists resulting from exchange scholarship programmes attended by prominent artists from abroad.

As for other outputs of the area, research activities will be primarily focused on mapping contemporary religious culture and art in the participating countries. Different approaches will be examined, e.g. those of art historians, architects, painters, designers, documentarists et al. While assessing the significance and functionality of cultural artefacts and pieces of art, we must take into the account actual needs of those who use the churches and sacred architecture as such, notably the European clergy and – above all – believers.

The guarantor of the Area 4: Contemporary Cultural and Art Practices will be the Zlín Regional Gallery of Fine Arts. The Gallery will organize a couple of major evens on the occasion of the anniversary of the Apostles of Slavic nations in 2013 and 2014, specifically the exhibitions Saints Cyril and Methodius in the Light of Czech History, Culture and Painting and Sacred Architecture Commissioned by the Bata Company. Further exhibitions to become part of the European Cultural Route project will be a logical sequel to the earlier activities of the Gallery and response to the demand of its visitors Major objectives of the aforesaid activities will be promoting the professional growth and communication skills of the Gallery staff, increasing its reputation and attracting more visitors.

Specific Objectives and Activities of the Area OBJECTIVE 1: MULTI-DISCIPLINARY EXCHANGE OF TRENDS IN CULTURE AND ART BETWEEN THE PARTNER COUNTRIES Description of the Objective Major priorities of the Area 4: Contemporary Cultural and Art Practices implemented under the project of the European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius include establishing long-term partnerships on the European level, building up the cooperation and multi-cultural dialogue between similarly oriented institutions from Central and Eastern Europe, and professional and artistic growth of all participants. The multilateral dialogue will be fostered under the Objective 1 trough creativeness and mapping contemporary trends in culture and art.

Activity 1.1 EXCHANGE STAYS OF ARTISTS FOCUSED ON CREATIVE OUTPUT Description of the Activity 1.1 Currently, exchange stays and scholarship programmes are the most usual instruments of cultural exchange. This particular activity will include preparing and organizing exchange scholarship programmes for artists and writers from Central and South-Eastern Europe followed by joint exhibitions in the end of each programme. The main objectives are: removing barriers between professionals and amateurs, and creating a working network linking the organizers and participants.

Even though a visitor to an exhibition may not speak a particular Central-, Eastern- or SouthernEuropean language and know next to nothing a given country, pieces of arts will bring him/her a clear message and he/she may feel certain affinity and likeness thanks to shared values and cultural roots. Different erudition, experience, national temperament and artistic approach, merged together and transferred to the exhibited pieces of art, will help create an inspiring and imaginative milieu that will be of great interest also to a laity, visitors coming from other regions, as well as the professional public.

Proposed Project SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMMES FOR ARTISTS AND WRITERS FOLLOWED BY JOINT EXHIBITIONS Description A scholarship programme organized by the ZlĂ­n Regional Gallery of Fine Arts as part of the European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius will be a joint programme for artists and writers. The former will most likely be more numerous, as an art exhibition will be one of the expected outputs.

Out of the total number of 9 participants, there will be 7 artists and 2 writers/poets and each participant will stay for 6 weeks. The most attracting aspect of the cultural exchange will be joint sojourns of 3 participants from different countries. The artists and writers will stay in ZlĂ­n, so that they will be able to work both in the city and in Velehrad.

The study stays and scholarship programmes are primarily inspired by pilgrimages of Saints Cyril and Methodius, inseparably connected with their lives. In the world of art, it is not unusual for young and 46

middle-aged artists to travel across the world and participate in various courses, study stays and scholarship programmes. In this manner, they leave behind a more or less durable trace and, vice versa, the ambience and culture of visited locations and countries make an imprint in their minds and, above all, in their art. Zlín and Velehrad – the two locations at which the participants will stay – have their remarkable Genius Loci and it can be expected that the sojourns, however brief, will inspire them and help them create unique pieces of art on the topic of a pilgrimage.

The intended multi-disciplinary cooperation under the scholarship programmes will be opened to different fields of art. As a result, we expect a wide variety of pieces of art to emerge: e.g. site specific art, interior and exterior pieces of art, paintings, sculptures, interior design, conceptual art, installations, comics, photographs, videos, animations, performances, art mapping etc.

Proposed Project RESEARCH OF THE CONTEMPOARY SACRED ARCHITECTURE Description Recent analyses showed a fatal lack of an archive, library or documentary centre that would systematically study and examine the contemporary sacred architecture. This specific activity attempts at making up for this deficiency in the field of the contemporary European research and taking the first step towards change. The research will be focused on the regions of Central, Southern and Eastern Europe. Since its outcomes should be published at the Internet in a form on an on-line publication in languages of the participating countries, they will be available to scholars from other European regions as a basic source of information.

The issue of the sacred architecture is closely associated with the legacy of Saints Cyril and Methodius, who are considered as originators of Christian architecture in Moravia. Outcomes of the research will be presented at an exhibition highlighting the intense cultural dialogue between the participating countries and the splendour and diversity of the contemporary sacred architecture.

Guarantor of the Area The guarantor of the Area 4: Contemporary Cultural and Art Practices is the Zlín Regional Gallery of Fine Arts, which concentrates primarily on the Czech and Slovak fine art and architecture from the 19th to the 21st century; manages, preserves and is building a collection of artefacts and pieces of art; organizes exhibitions and educational programs; and, to the top of it, organizes various events linking together different fields of culture. It is a great ambition of the Gallery to become a unique and unorthodox educational institution and a place where people can meet with art in an active way.

Encouraging the artistic life in the Region is another of its major goals.

The major attraction of the Gallery is a recently opened standing exhibition on the second floor of the building No. 14 in the former Bata factory premises, to which it was moved from the old House of Art and the Chateau of Zlín in the spring of 2013. Spaces for temporary and short-term exhibitions were established on the ground floor.

Partners/Stakeholders Relevant partners will participate chiefly in disseminating the call for proposals and picking suitable artists (exchange scholarship in case of the first project), and in looking for relevant exhibits and related information (the exhibition of the contemporary religious art as part of the second project).

We would like to cooperate principally with galleries, museums of art, professional associations of architects, and non-profit cultural organizations (NGOs) chiefly from the following countries: Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Republic of Macedonia/FYROM, Albania, and Greece.

Besides the partners that will look for particular artists, an institutional “umbrella” partner responsible for complex administrative paperwork should be found. The most desirable pattern was found in Slovakia, thanks to the participation of the Gallery of Nitra, an institution established by the Nitra Self-Governing Region and funded from its budget. Like the Zlín Region, the Nitra SelfGoverning Region will be able to deal with the administrative work and, above all, funding.

Similarly, in Hungary, we can expect the cooperation between the partner region – the Administrative County of Vas – and some of Hungarian galleries. As for exchange scholarship, we have established a mutual cooperation with two institutions focused on the given activities – FKSE Fiatal Képzőművészek Stúdiója and ACAX | Agency for Contemporary Art Exchange, Ludwig Museum, Budapest. Though these galleries are not based it the Administrative County of Vas, the County can at least deal with the administrative part of the project.

As for the other partner countries, the circumstances are a bit more complex, as Czech institutions, with an exception of few, lack experience in dealing with partners from South-Eastern Europe. Still, finding the right partners among galleries specialised in contemporary art that will look for suitable artists should be possible (e.g. Pekarna – GuestRoomMaribor). Contacting certain Art Academies may be an alternative option.

Artists from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary will most likely participate in the exchange scholarship programme, though those from other counties may be included as well, if we find suitable partners.

While organizing the exhibition of contemporary religious art, we would like to focus on partners whose expertise would contribute to the success of the project, either due to their skilled staff and professional background or close contacts with local experts.

In the Czech Republic we have so far contacted the National Gallery of Prague, Municipal Museum of Brno, Museum of Art, Olomouc, etc.

Slovakia: Experts contributing to the “Architektura a urbanismus” magazine and the Slovak University of Technology, Bratislava – Faculty of Construction Engineering.

Croatia: University of Zagreb – Faculty of Architecture.

Slovenia: Znanstveno raziskovalni center Slovenske akademije znanosti in umetnosti (Research and Study Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts). Above all, we succeeded in recruiting Professor Damjan Prelovšek, a renowned Slovenian historian of art specialised on the Balkans and Central Europe, notably on modern and contemporary architecture. His professional contacts will be a major contribution to the project.

Cooperation – Established Contacts Partners from Abroad Currently we can rely on partner institutions from the Nitra Self-Governing Region (Slovakia), Administrative County of Vas (Hungary), two Hungarian art centres, the Research and Study Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and an expert on art history, Professor Damjan Prelovšek from Slovenia. The aforesaid entities will play the role of national coordinators. While implementing the project and creating the network of European municipalities and regions associated with the common legacy of Saints Cyril and Methodius, other entities may also be included, e.g. the Municipality of Ohrid (Republic of Macedonia/FYROM), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), the Province of Udine (Italy) etc.

Partners from the Czech Republic As concerns Czech institutions, the Zlín Regional Gallery is prepared to exploit the database of its links and contacts to artists and cultural institutions for the benefit of the relevant target group in order to continue the promising and fruitful cooperation from the past. E.g., the exhibition Saints Cyril and Methodius in the Light of Czech History, Culture and Painting was originally prepared in cooperation with the Museum of Art (Olomouc); however, other institutions from the participating regions may also be involved, e.g. the Archbishopric of Olomouc, Moravian Gallery of Brno et al.).

Summary of the Area Discussions with experts from relevant fields of knowledge over the contents of the two proposed projects have suggested that they are feasible. As for the study stays and scholarship programmes, it will be necessary to find a reliable partner in the field of letters, at least in Slovakia and Hungary. It is however still unclear which entities will become institutional partners of the research-oriented project, as we are looking chiefly for scientific, scholarly and educational institutions. Once again, the major concern is the complex administrative paperwork connected with the issues of EU funding.

Hence, both projects remain in the stage of a draft, lacking a clear strategy on funding and, notably in case of the latter project, institutionalised and confirmed partners.

AREA 5: CULTURAL TOURISM AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF CULTURE

Description of the Area and Analysis of Needs The European Commission, European Parliament, member states and European Council show their willingness to keep cooperating in order to promote the so-called European cultural routes. Since the coming into the effect of the Treaty of Lisbon (1 December 2009), EU has got a new role: making Europe more visible as a tourist destination. The European cultural routes present a unique allEuropean product in terms of tourism.

The cultural routes may be further developed into a complex set of services, from which European entrepreneurs and citizens can profit. They can also reduce extreme concentration of tourists in a few best-known locations and contribute to a better management of the seasonal fluctuation of tourists (due to an innovative model of travelling) and also strengthen the notion of European citizenship (through discovering our common cultural heritage and roots). Among the already existing routes are, e.g., the Iron Curtain Trail, Phoenicians’ Route, Routes of the Olive Tree, Via Francigena and many others. The European Union can contribute to a greater diversity of the offer and promote travelling in Europe through introducing thematic tourism-oriented products on the allEuropean level.

The European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius (hereinafter referred to as C&M ECR) should commemorate and highlight the Cyril and Methodius legacy, Christian roots and culture of the countries influenced by the mission of the Slavic Apostles and their disciples and followers. From the point of view of cultural tourism, the creation of the route consists primarily of linking major European places of pilgrimage and religious monuments, perpetuating the Cyril and Methodius legacy and promoting elementary concepts on which Europe is based: human rights, cultural democracy, education, plurality of opinions, maintaining one’s identity, dialogue, mutual contacts and reciprocal enriching across borders and centuries.

Large areas of Europe, in particular the ancient Great Moravian Empire, Pannonia and Old Bulgarian Empire, were massively influenced by Saints Cyril and Methodius’ mission in the 9th century. Deeply respected personalities, Cyril and Methodius are often considered the most influential spiritual leaders who played crucial role in disseminating the Christian faith.

Perpetuating Cyril and Methodius’ legacy in the context of tourism, its sustainability, and competitiveness of given destinations would be unthinkable without joint effort and resources. The given subject has a European dimension and is common for countries of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. The tourism-oriented product set-up in this manner and including a widespread offer of destinations located in countries influenced by the Cyril and Methodius legacy will be highly competitive. In these terms, the project will be one of the most comprehensive tourism products, spreading across Europe from the East to the West.

The proposed project C&M ECR will merge the attractions of historical locations and regions under a joint brand. Separate countries will prepare their own specific and unique offers connected with their national cultural traditions and heritage that, however, will be included into inter-regional products, 55

thus contributing to the development of a matchless offer consisting of a unique set of local attractions on the one hand and an all-inclusive product on the other. Involved countries will participate in the preparation and marketing of this product as part of a joint management process.

The guarantor of the Area 5: Cultural Tourism and Sustainable Development of Culture will be the East Moravian Tourist Authority, a Beneficial Public Entity (Centrála cestovního ruchu Východní Moravy), founded by the Zlín Region. It boasts a long-standing tradition in the destination management and marketing, vast experience in project procedures, and developing tourist products.

Last not least, it played a decisive role in creating and developing the religious/pilgrimage tourism product, am absolutely matchless endeavour in the context of Czech tourism. In addition, the EA Tourist Authority is highly appraised by the professional public, has been awarded many times for its products (both on a national and international level), and, finally, was proclaimed the Czech Republic’s Best Destination Management Authority.

Establishing and developing the close cooperation between sites of a historical importance, expert institutions, cultural institutions, and destination management entities of respective regions that will participate in the project C&M ECR will be crucial for the further development and sustainability of the product.

Specific Objectives and Activities of the Area OBJECTIVE 1: CREATING A TOURISM-ORIENTED OFFER AS PART OF THE CULTURAL ROUTE OF SAINTS CYRIL AND METHODIUS Description of the Objective Exploiting the thematic focus of the European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius in creating and offering tourist products (itineraries). Such products will serve to the purpose of promoting the historical and cultural heritage and their “selling” to interested parties in a form of tourism-oriented offer. The essential idea is making it possible for tourists to travel along pilgrimage (tourist) paths and discover locations associated with the Cyril and Methodius tradition.

Since tourist paths have not yet been developed in most participating countries, the project should include creating new pilgrimage/tourism routes, their maintenance and/or upgrading, and extending the existing paths and trails. Subsequently, they will be connected into national and international networks. The current extent of existing and/or potential pilgrimage and tourist paths differs from case to case in different partner countries; it is therefore necessary to identify specific locations, destinations, trails and cultural monuments, and examine possible routes.

The most central activities of the project C&M ECR will be those aimed at restoring cultural, religious, technical and historic monuments, and preserving natural sites and other locations important for tourism. Subsequently, also other structures will be made accessible, notably those that, in addition to their historical and/or cultural importance, can be used for other purposes (e.g. accommodation, catering, education etc.). The tourist products will show consideration for sustainable and environment-friendly tourism and will be linked with local cultural traditions and folk crafts.

Activity 1.1 IDENTIFYING POINTS OF INTEREST AND ROUTES; THEIR CREATION AND RESTORATION The current state of points of interest and tourist routes that could be included into the project differs case to case in different partner countries. As part of this activity, separate partners will identify their respective points of interest, tourist routes and cultural sites that can be used for culture-oriented (religious) tourism thematically related to C&M ECR. Points of interest (sites, buildings, areas) will be identifies in separate countries and included into the project. Possible further needs in terms of management, functional and/or technological changes and potential investments will also be ascertained.

After the identification stage, specific activities will be designed and implemented in order to restore the existing pilgrimage/tourist routes and creating new ones. The routes will be chosen and assessed with respect to their possible use for hiking, cycling and, possibly, horse riding.

Separate points of interest will be marked (labelled) and included into a simple tourist guide of the cultural route. The points of interest will be, above all, important tourist sites, educational institutions, cultural establishments (museums and galleries), religious establishments, historical sites associated with the project, and natural sites.

The paths and trails for hikers and cyclists incorporated into the route will be marked/signed and information signs will be installed (signposts, information boards, alternatively also signs using of innovative tools for mobile phone applications, e.g. QR code). In the open nature, hiking paths, cycle trails (and possibly horse trails) included into C&M ECR will be marked/signed in a manner usual in a respective country. Whenever a new manner of marking should be introduced, good practices of existing European cultural routes will be followed and the project logo used. Tourism infrastructure should be improved in certain locations; e.g., natural sources of drinking water (springs, wells) tidied up, campsites, shelters rest areas or dormitories established or renewed.

The project is focused on identifying sights, attractions and tourism services along the Pilgrimage Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius, designing the route that should connect the major sights and tourism services in the region, preparing the signposting methodology, graphic manual, and design of the Pilgrimage Route information system.

EUROPEAN CULTURAL ROUTE OF SAINTS CYRIL AND METHODIUS: EXTENSION OF THE PATH FROM SVATÝ ANTONÍNEK TO MIKULČICE (CZ) Description In April 2013, the Zlín Region submitted this investment project under INTERREG IVA. It covers the issue of changing the signage of tourist paths while preserving the current signposts and stripe signs, and marking new stages of the Pilgrimage Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

Activity 1.2 CREATION OF TOURISM PRODUCTS A product package will be created, including local sights and attractions (see Activity 1.1) associated with the C&M ECR. The products may include also other locally available attractions and/ or actions resulting from the activities of the Areas 1 to 4.

The offer may vary depending on capabilities of different partners. E.g., in case of the Zlín Region, it will be based on the existing product “Pilgrimage Routes of Eastern Moravia”, to which certain other components may be added, depending on the outcomes of the identification stage. So-called slowtourism activities will be a substantial part of the offer.

The product offer has to be created for each of the partner regions participating in the Area 5.

Private enterprises (particularly tour operators) will also take part in the activities. As soon as the product offer is ready, marketing activities will be launched in order to present the offer to target groups (B2B, B2C). The product offer will consist of modules, so that interested parties (tourists) can travel along separate stages of the Route, step by step, or exploit the itineraries related to specific points of interest.

FEASIBILITY STUDY OF THE POTENTIAL FOR THE EXPLOITATION AS A TOURIST DESTINATION OF THE CULTURAL AND HISTORIC LEGACY OF GREAT MORAVIA

JOINT PROMOTION OF THE TOURISM POTENTIAL OF GREAT MORAVIA IN THE CZECHOSLOVAK BORDERLAND

Description South Moravian Tourist Authority, together with the East Moravian Tourist Authority and the township of Kopčany (SK) have launched the above projects closely associated with the legacy of Great Moravia and Saints Cyril and Methodius in 2013.

The Southern and Eastern Moravia, as well as the territory of the Trnava Region in Slovakia (SK) are developing regions with a potential for tourism growth, joined by a lasting willingness to cooperate in one of the major areas, namely the common historic and cultural legacy of the Great Moravian Empire that had once existed on their territory and influenced their fates in the past. In the same way as the millennium of Cyril and Methodius’ advent, celebrated in 1863, aroused spontaneous eagerness of Central-European Slavic nations, notably their elites, willing to disseminate the recognition of common Slavic roots, this year’s 1150the anniversary of the advent to Great Moravia of Saints Cyril and Methodius is a stimulus for international cooperation in this area. The 59

neighbouring regions that had been part of Great Moravia – the first empire of the Western Slavs – in the 9th century wish to take advantage of the opportunity to cooperate in the all-important industry of cognitive tourism. Although several ancient Great-Moravian locations, mostly archaeological sites, can be found on the territory of both regions, no effort has hitherto been made to promote this cross-border tourism product in cooperation and only a few of the sites have sufficient tourism infrastructure: the fortified Slavic settlement at Mikulčice–Valy, the National Cultural Monument; Great Moravia Heritage Monument in Staré Město (nearby Uherské Hradiště), the National Cultural Monument; Pohansko archaeological reserve (nearby Břeclav); Velehrad (nearby Staré Město) – one of major places of pilgrimage in the Czech Republic; Great Moravian archaeological open air museum in township of Modrá (nearby Velehrad); and Church of Saint Margaret of Antioch in Kopčany, which has recently been extensively examined.

The projects are aimed at preparing a study of the “Potential for the Exploitation as a Tourist Destination of the Cultural and Historic Legacy of Great Moravia”, which should provide sufficient rationale and justification for a better exploitation of the Czecho-Slovak borderland for tourism. It should also highlight the importance of the entire territory of ancient Great Moravia and, in particular, still underrated tourism potential resulting from the Cyril and Methodius legacy. Opinion polls among visitors to archaeological sites would help us learn more about their preferences and interests and consequently include suitable activities and outputs into follow-up projects or when creating joint tourism products. The major objective of these outputs is creating favourable conditions for the development of tourism in the borderland regions, highlighting its potential for tourism growth that has hitherto been largely underrated, joint planning of tourism products targeted on appreciating common historical roots of the territory that had played a central role in Christianising of Slavic Central Europe in early Middle Ages.

Activity 1.3 COMMON ACCREDITATION OF TOURISM AGENCIES AND ENTERPRISES ALONG THE ROUTE The objective of the activity is aimed at involving tourism operators into the process of promoting the pilgrimage route through the accreditation. The major instruments will be, e.g., setting up a methodology for accrediting tourism agencies operating along the route, based on the good practice of Cammini d’Europa (accreditation of enterprises along St. Francis Route, Province of Rieti). Further, a brochure for tour operators will be compiled and workshops organized.

OBJECTIVE 2: MARKETING OF THE PROJECT AND CULTURAL TOURISM PRODUCTS Description of the Objective Creating the project identity of C&M ECR on a European level using the manual of the European, national and regional brand of the Pilgrimage Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius. Promoting the project and products using marketing tools, through which the outputs of separate areas of the project will be presented to the professional and general public. Besides the project as a whole, cultural tourism products will be promoted and marketed as well. The marketing activities targeted at future consumers of C&M ECR products are one of major factors of success of the whole project.

Activity 2.1 INTRODUCING THE PROJECT BRAND The project will join together historic destinations with points of interest located in different regions and merge them under a common brand that will give them a European dimension. By amalgamating the unique local attractions, services and an all-inclusive product offer under a joint brand, we will get a highly competitive and attractive tourism product encompassing Eastern, Central and Southern Europe. Even though the tourism-oriented products created in association with C&M ECR will be diverse in terms of their form, contents, and target groups, they should have a unifying concept and use common emblems.

In order to ensure mutual interconnection and continuity of all the activities associated with promoting the Cyril and Methodius legacy (including those aimed at marketing), we will use an official logo of the celebrations of the 1150th anniversary of Saints Cyril and Methodius’ advent to the Great Moravia. The Zlín Region is an owner of the logo and brand registered by the Industrial Property Office on 15 May 2012. The rules of the use of texts associated with the “brand” and logo will be set forth in the Logo Design User Manual.

Other participants to the project will not, in all likelihood, incur such cost. The leader partner will create the brand/logo and the design manual in agreed-upon language and will made them available for further use.

Activity 2.2 PREPARATION OF MARKETING MATERIALS The activity is aimed at the preparation of marketing materials informing about the project C&M ECR and cultural tourism products. The outputs (materials) resulting from this activity should provide the end users with any and all necessary information about the project and offered products in an efficient and purposeful manner.

The activity consists of different segments of a â&#x20AC;&#x153;marketing mixtureâ&#x20AC;?, including study stays covering separate areas, and fam and press trips aimed at promoting the project and tourism products. The marketing materials can be published on various media (printed materials, web presentations, electronic communication for smart phone, etc.) depending on the most important target group. The scope and extent of the marketing materials will depend on specific products offered by individual partners under the common brand (logo) of the project and the name of the cultural route. Efficient inward and outward publicity (PR) will also be part of the marketing.

The activities will include preparing and creating the information materials in different forms (printed, electronic) four tourists and visitors coming to different destinations (guidebooks, maps, promotional brochures, web pages, catalogues, mobile phone applications, multimedia presentations).

The routes and points of interest included into the Activity 1.1 will be describes in a form of tourist guides and promotional leaflets/brochures distributed to those interested in the C&M ECR products.

Each tourist guide will include a clear identification of the project (logo), description of a specific path, relevant sites and locations, major sights and attractions, cultural activities, as well as information relevant for tourists (accommodation, boarding, catering, services, information milieu etc.). The guidebooks will be both printed and electronic so that they can be used in mobile phones and for Internet applications (web pages).

The pilgrimage (tourist) trails included into C&M ECR will be equipped with information boards, signposts, and other information tools.

Separate points of interest will be equipped with information signs in accordance with the Logo Design User Manual.

OBJECTIVE 3: AN INTERCONNECTION BETWEEN SEPARATE AREAS OF THE PROJECT AND TOURISM PRODUCTS Description of the Objective Developing the activities implemented as part of the projects under the Areas 1 to 4 with an emphasis on their value for tourism. The expected output will have a form of supporting programmes and activities accompanying the conferences of experts, symposia, seminars, study stays, museum exhibitions, other exhibitions, musical and theatre performances, films, composed programmes, contests etc.

Organizing and marketing of such activities under separate areas can be supported in terms of methodology by the “Tourism Teams”.

‘IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF SAINTS CYRIL AND METHODIUS’ – TRAVEL TO LEARN Description The proposed product, whose guarantor is the Museum of Moravian Slovakia, Uherské Hradiště, is based on the objectives of the Area 2: “Strengthening the Awareness, Historical Legacy and European Cultural Heritage”. Travelling to selected archaeological sites accompanied with lectures for the public and concluded with a holy mass at the Great Moravia Heritage Monument in Staré Město or, optionally, at the Sadská Height. Bus or cycling tours to sites associated with the history of Great Moravia (Modrá, Velehrad, Sv. Kliment u Osvětiman – fortified settlement). The project is aimed at presenting the personalities of Saints Cyril and Methodius as well as locations in the broader vicinity of the ancient Veligrad to the public.

EUROPEAN STUDENTS’ WEEKEND PILGRIMAGES FROM VELEHRAD TO SVATÝ HOSTÝN Description The proposed product, whose guarantor is the Arcibiskupské gymnázium (Archbishop Grammar School), Kroměříž, is based on the objectives of the Area 3: “Cultural and Educational Exchange of Young Europeans“. This activity offers to young participants from different countries of Europe a unique spiritual experience encountered during a common pilgrimage between Velehrad and the mount of Svatý Hostýn, Moravia’s two most important places of pilgrimage. Such an activity is particularly attractive, as religious pilgrimages have experienced an unprecedented boom recently. A collectively experienced pilgrimage gives the young people an opportunity to meet people of the same age from all over Europe, communicate with them and pray together.

Target Groups From the territorial point of view, they will recruit from citizens of the partner countries interested in the given topics as well as tourists from countries in which religious tourism is extremely popular, particularly Italy, France, Poland and Middle East. It is evident that the structure of the target group can be formed, apart from other tools, by the structure and subject of the offer. E.g., products focused on cycling tourism in a specific country with an emphasis on the Cyril and Methodius legacy will most likely attract younger tourists, while traditional spa tourism combined with pilgrimages will appeal to an older clientele. In terms of organizing, we must take into the account that almost two thirds of tourists will arrange their trip individually and more than one third of trips will be organized by travel agencies.

While tourists of all ages are interested in religious and cultural tourism, most of them will belong to the age group of 40 to 60 years. They are motivated by looking for, and finding of, points of interest associated with history, culture, religious legends etc. This target group is relatively stable and largely unaffected by economic turbulences, as their enthusiasm is stronger than any other incentives. From this point of view, the story of Saints Cyril and Methodius’ pilgrimage and mission is very attractive to them.

Guarantor of the Area East Moravian Tourist Authority, a Beneficial Public Entity (hereinafter referred to as EMTA) was founded by the Zlín Region as an entity managing the tourism marketing in the Region. EMTA boasts a long-standing tradition in the destination management and marketing, vast experience in project procedures, and developing tourist products. Last not least, it played a decisive role in creating and developing the religious/pilgrimage tourism product, am absolutely matchless endeavour in the context of Czech tourism.

In addition, EMTA is highly appraised by the professional public, has been awarded many times for its products (both on a national and international level), and, finally, was proclaimed the Czech Republic’s Best Destination Management Authority. It is active in the field of international cooperation, takes part in international projects, and is a member of the Cammini d‘Europa.

Summary of the Area As we currently do not exactly know our potential partners’ aspirations and have no preliminary information, the activities suggested for the Area 5 are currently designed on the Czech conditions and practice.

EMTA, SMTA and Cammini d’Europa have cooperated for some time and have extensively discussed the possibility of merging the aforesaid projects in order to create a large international project “Great Moravia – In Ss. Cyril and Methodius’ Footsteps” that could become one of very initial fragments of the proposed European cultural route, specifically its “Tourism” area (pillar). In its preliminary stage, this large project is supported by partners from Poland, Slovakia, Italy and Austria.

On this stage and during initial discussions, the project will clearly accentuate the aspect of tourism and pilgrimages in line with previous activities already implemented by EMTA and in countries of Central and Southern Europe.

At the same time, cooperation between EMTA and the association FENAM, Spišská Kapitula (SK) has become more intense and will result in striking an official partnership this year, particularly in the field of pilgrimage tourism and exchange of pilgrims to the mutual benefit of both participating regions.

The issue of religious tourism and pilgrimages is one of major areas in which EMTA is willing to actively participate under the project of the European cultural route. In addition to this, the Agency will make use of any other opportunities and chances to fully utilize the Cyril and Methodius legacy and its major economic potential for the development of tourism and the proposed project.
