Reflecting on the achievements of this year’s foot ball team, one is inclined at first glance to say it was not a very fruitful year for the Cougars. According to the wins and losses this fact would seem valid, but there were a few high spots and much was accomp lished that does not appear in the record. Although the w in over Claremont was the only victory of the season, and was a very welcome one, it was not the peak of the season. The climax came in

the game w ith Lebanon, undefeated until m eeting Cardigan. Here, in an evenly played game, w ith both teams doing all things w ell, the fray ended in a stale mate. Both teams left the field tired, but happy, know ing that they had played their very best. Coach Y aggy and Babcock said that lack of speed was a big factor in the outcome of most games. Let us hope that this weakness can be overcome next season. R

The hours of practice that they put in paid oflF. Special mention should go to a few. Steve Reilly did an excep tionally fine job as goalie. Bruce Hartnett, a three year veteran skated consistently well. Peter Gardent de veloped a good shot and his skating ability was a valuable asset. Tino Langfeld, playing almost every minute of every game, was excellent on defense. Tony Gerard’s work on the line was outstanding. W ally Harman and Charlie Hall were staunch defensemen. The whole squad is to be commended for a good job w ell done.

W ith our rink relocated on the football field, Hockey enjoyed a very successful season. The over-all record did not indicate this fact but a look at the scores of two of the games show that they were lost in sudden death overtime periods and could have gone the other way. The ice was good most of the time. U sing the corri dor of Hopkins H all as a place to change skates was a welcome convenience and having the rink so handy attracted more spectators at the games. Many boys improved noticeably during the season. T

Baseball this spring enjoyed a fine season, w inning a total of three games and losing four. Also, our junior varsity team w on one game and lost one. Under the watchful eye of their coaches, Mr. W ood and Mr. Gallagher, 28 candidates reported for practice in the first week of April to begin the long, slow grind of getting in shape. U sing the parking lot behind Brewster Hall, calisthenics, throwing, running, sprints, and defensive skills were developed. Soon the snow cleared and w e moved to the ball field. Our first sched uled game, however, was cancelled due to wet grounds and cold weather. Finally, on May 2nd, our opener was w ith Hanover, and we lost a close pitcher’s duel, 1-0. W e also lost a hard fought game w ith Holderness, 12-10. W e finally entered the w inning column in our next game, defeat ing Proctor Academy, 7-2. In that game, our pitcher, Tino Langfeld established a new school record by striking out 18 batters in seven innings. W e lost our next tw o games. N ew Hampton, 6-5, and T ilton, 7-3- Both of these games were see-saw battles and could have gone either way. W e then picked up a forfeit game against Hartford, and w e won the final game of the year against Mascoma, 5-4. B ill

Drummey was the hero in that game, com ing in as a relief pitcher and picking up the win. The J.V. team enabled an additional 14 boys to see game experience. W e lost the first game to Lebanon, 8-5, but came back in the second one to edge out a close victory against Mascoma, 10-9. Jim N ow ak was the star of that game, getting tw o hits and playing an excellent defensive game behind the plate. Some of the highlights throughout the season: Eric Jones and Andy Knitzer led the team in batting: w ith .368 and .300 averages respectively. B ill Drummey fielded perfect ball in the field, led the team in runs batted in w ith 8, and played four positions, second, third, pitcher, and catcher. T ino Langfeld was our regular pitcher w ith a blazing fast ball, and had 77 strikeouts in 35 innings pitched. Gary Mascitis tied a school record w ith 73 putouts during the season, and played an outstanding game as the team’s catcher. In the J.V. games, Jim N ow ak led the hitters w ith a .600 batting average, follow ed by Carl N ydegger’s .500 average. Hank Fairlie had the longest hit, a triple. Early in the season, the team elected Tino Langfeld and M ike Mosher as their Co-Captains. For his excel lent play throughout the season.
