FACULTY CHILDREN 'i

T ina Linn h olding Kent Rouillard.

It is always fun to babysit for the faculty children. You get to eat all the master’s food and can stay up late and watch the good television shows on class nights. The most popular t.v. show is Batman for the children. They have one batman cape that they fight over to see who gets it. Then they play the role of Batman, the crusader, and Robin, his faithful companion. Sometimes we even try to do some homework. W hile we are at classes the nursery is open to the children. They play there every morning and after din ner. One boy’s job is child care who supervises the wild batmen after dinner. On the whole, though, we do enjoy them.

This year like other years football had another good season. Though it was not as good a record as last year’s, the coaches agreed that with such little experi ence the team did quite well. We opened our season with a loss to Claremont 6-14 which was to their advantage as they had played three games before us. Then we got rolling and went through New Hampton 16-6, Proctor 10-0 and Vermont Academy 28-6 victoriously. Next came K.U.A. which was the most exciting game of the year. Twice we had taken the lead only to end up with a 20-20 tie. Finally came Hanover which we lost 6-12. The outstanding players were Topper Stone, Carl Nydegger, John Thaxter, Bob Pipes, Brit Eustis, Halsey Smith and Rod Parmley.

First R ow : K. Seith, D. Scotten, R. Lawson, G. W illiam s, R. M anley, J. N ew m an, Jr., C. Hartdegen, P. Abbott, R. Hicks, Jr., J. Jeanneney. Second R ow : Mr. H ough (C o a ch ), F. Rowe, D. Colie, D . Hanson, S. Heath, H. Littleton, C. G. G allagher, Jr., L. H ilton, C. T h om p son, J. Sutton, J. M oore, Mr. Lombard (C oach ). T h ird R ow : D. H ogan, O. Gray, G. McIlvain, W . Stevens III, J. Shethar, D. Smith, R. Johnson, D. Dickie, J. M c& ll.

Like Mr. Lombard always said, "The first practice was the best!” The first game we got off to a bad start and lost 3-0 against Lasalette. The next game against Holderness we won 2-0. Three days later we played New Hampton and we came through in the 4th quarter with a decisive victory 2-1. That game against New Hampton was the christening of our new field. The next game, tired and worn out, we went to battle Kimball Union, and we lost 1-0 in a field of mud. We played our last game at home in rainy, soggy weather. The game was against La salette, and we lost 1-0. Mr. Lombard said, "W e’d better get taller players next year. Isn’t that right, Mr. Wakely.’ ”

LIGHT-WEIGHT FOOTBALL

First R ow : J. Friedlich (M an ager), R. Kayser, H. Robson, D. Johnson, G. Bentley III, R. N eal, J. Marshall, R. Nutter, A. Johnston, Jr., G. Cook, A. W einer (M an ager). Second R ow : J. Goodspeed, P. Russ, T. Duff, M. H ow e, K. K now les, D . Martin, W . W irene, Jr., G. R obin son, S. Reynolds, W . D ixon. T h ird R ow : Mr. Stout (C oach ), P. Gardent, G. McCowan, Jr., R. Smyth, G. Thomas, A. Church, E. Fay, Jr., J. Cowan, N . Davis, Jr., J. Place III, Mr. Y aggy (C oach ).

The newest sport added to Cardigan’s activities this year was light-weight football. This sport was for boys who were too light for the varsity team. Under the direction of Mr. Yaggy and Mr. Stout the team had a 1-1 season. The first game against Sacred Hearts of Lebanon was won by Cardigan with a score of 14-12. The outstanding players were Dean Martin and K urt Knowles. The next game was against the varsity second string. Though the game was very hard fought by both teams the varsity won 26-6. Mr. Yaggy and Mr. Stout deserve a lot of credit for producing a team with no experience at all.

ARCHERY

Once again the boys of Cardigan Mountain School have been offered the en足 tertaining and enjoyable sport of archery. Under the expert direction and instruc足 tion of Mr. Aldrich, many boys became better archers at the expense of some twenty-five arrows, three bow strings and one bow. This year we had target shoot足 ing and also archery golf. Archery golf would be accomplished by shooting an arrow at a target about a hundred yards away. Although in most cases one could not see the tire, a few boys like Kip Shields and Tom Marsden came very close to getting a hole in one.

Kneeling: J. W ild. Left to right: Mr. Aldrich (C o a ch ), E. Gorman, D. Waisbrot, D. Aidrich, R. W haland, G. Devereaux, J. Richardson, J. Cady, K. Ohrstrom, T. Marsden III, E. Shields.

FALL TENNIS

First R ow : D. Savitt, R. Bergeson, M. Rains, M. Burton, R. Carpenter, B. W elsh, J. Taylor, R. Perry. Second R ow : Mr. Burget (C o a ch ), B. Austin, L. Truneanu, R. Levine, G. Swenson III, R. Richards, L. M orrell. T h ird R ow ; W . Oberndorf, D . D . Ritchie, E. Stulb IV, H. Scott III, D . Kenyon, A. M cDonald, Mr. Linn ( C oach).

This year tennis was one of the most enthusiastic activities. W hen the weather was not favorable, which it wasn’t quite often, you would find the tennis players out sweeping the courts, working over at the Pinnacle, picking up the campus, or even inside studying. Under the fine leadership of Mr. Burget and Mr. Linn every one agreed it was a rewarding fall.

WATERFRONT

W aterfront enjoyed a very nice fall, even v^^ith the cold weather that was pres ent very often. There were two meets this year, both with Proctor. The first meet was lost by a close margin 2-1. Then in the second meet Cardigan came back to defeat Proctor 3-1. W arren Morris was the outstanding skipper. Everybody is ready for the spring when the sailing team will defend Cardigan’s sailing supremacy.

First R ow : S. Chaffee, D. Gaillard IV, B. Ellis, S. Gerould. Second R ow ; Mr. B otelle (C oach), C. Zamore, S. Tucker, Mr. Broadhurst (C oach). T h ird R ow : P. Smith, A. Hardy, W . Morris, S. Palmer, L. Giller.

FORESTRY

K neeling: S. Reily, R. Ingalls III. Standing: J. Latterman, P. M oore, J. Sculthorpe, H. Turner, P. Stella, C. M cGill, Mr. Brayman, R. Addis.

This fall despite our many accidents like bleeding Koala Bears and Jim Mainzer getting stranded in a thirty foot tree without any escape route, the forestry group had a very successful season. The forestry group worked on clearing the areas around the tennis courts, football fields, both new and old, and present soccer field. We took several trips to Orange Gorge in the early fall to rest our tired muscles which had been put to work so diligently at cutting down trees and clear足 ing bushes and shrubs. Our group would like to thank Mr. Kiberd and Mr. Brayman for their ex足 pert instruction and outstanding leadership. We would now like to dedicate this poem to Mr. Kiberd and Mr. Brayman. Though late fall days were very cold W e never shook or shivered W hy we just looked for warmth and strength from Mr. Brayman and our Mr. Kiberd. R. I n g a l l s

This year’s glorious rebirth of snow brought great gratification to all the avid ski "nuts” residing on campus. Everyone remembers that accursed w^inter of 64-65, when ski resorts all over the East frantically converted to artificial snow. This year most of the school anxiously awaited any kind of improvement, however small or unimpressive. As 75% of the student body are participants in the recrea tional ski program, this plea must have swung great influence. Anyway, in the final analysis, the snow this year was comfort ably substantial. The Pinnacle got its first year of real use. Numer ous ski holidays abounded. On

RECREATIONAL SK IIN G

the macabre side, there were a few broken legs. Getting back to the Pinnacle, there were still many complaints. ("That darn head wall is all rock.” ) A few unforgettable dare-devil runs both on Clancy and the Pinnacle will be treasured by the ski "nuts” for the rest of their short lives! The puzzled looks of ski beginners, the triumphant looks of the experts, the awe-inspiring wipe-outs, all made up another ski season. It would take a life time to precisely define the varied, intangible elements of any ski season. This scanty sum mary and the few pictures are only fretful indications of the real thing.

HOCKEY

Kneeling: A. Robinson, H. Robson, J. Marshall, R. M anley, B. D outy. Standing; A. Church, G. Tilghm an, B. Stone, B. Gordon, A. Luria, D. D. Ritchie, B. Eustis II. Missing: Coaches Mr. W alke and Mr. Botelle.

T his year’s hockey team started the season w ith a convincing sp irit of dedication and o p tim ism . U nfortunately, m any tough breaks w ere to follow , and at this date th e ir record is 2-6-1. I t appeared th a t a solid base of re tu rn in g veterans assured a successful season. B rian G ordon, a l ready a good goalie for last year’s team , was expected to be excellent this year (as he proved to b e ). T h e o th er re tu rn in g starters w ere T o p p er Stone and B ritt Eustis, and Alex Luria m oved up to sta rtin g defense. T h e m ost impressive returnee was G eorge T ilg h m an , w ho came d u rin g the second half of last year and im m ediately w on a sta rtin g position. T h e only new com er to crack the startin g line-up was Bob M anley. O n January 8th we opened against Proctor. C ardigan showed a custom ary op en in g gam e n erv ousness, resulting in P ro cto r’s op en in g score. Shortly afterw ard, how ever, we showed some m ore consistent signs of cohesiveness. T h e defense was really impressive. B rian G ordon m ade m any good saves and Luria and Eustis also did a com m endable job. T ilg h m an was the prim e factor in w in n in g the gam e scoring on tw o breakaways. G o rd o n and T ilg h m an w ere the stars of the day. From this p o in t we w ere to lose six games. T h ree of these losses w ere by one goal. O ne other loss was by two. In general th e p a tte rn of the opening gam e was repeated w ith o u t the necessary elem ent of luck. W e played P roctor again and tied them . W e beat V erm ont Academy 1-0. T hus the final record of 2-6-1. A lthough n ot impressive, this team ’s record is not a fair account of the team ’s w orth. G ordon on defense and T ilg h m a n w ere the chief stand-outs. In general the team faced older, bigger, and faster skating opponents from larger p rep schools. T h e team distinguished itself as a scrappy u n it capable of g iv in g any of its opponents a rugged, close m atch.

MOUNTAIN DAY A t 7:30 A.M. on M onday, O ctober 11, 1965, a g reat cheer rose from th e d in in g room . M r. W akely had just given the w ord aw aited for several weeks th a t today was M o untain Day. W ith in tw enty m inutes all the buses had arrived and w ere ready to leave a t 8:05. T h e easy clim bers w ere headed tow ard W elsh M ountain. T h e harder clim bers set th eir destination for th ree m oun足 tains: Lafayette, Lincoln, and L ittle H aystack in th e Presidential Range. T h e W elsh M ountain Clim bers w ere rew arded w ith a beau tifu l view after an hour of clim bing. T h e hard clim bers m et w ith a thick fog w hich prevented any view at th e top, b u t the snow proved to be enjoyable w ith a few snow ball fights. H alfw ay dow n after the fog lifted a beau tifu l view was seen. A ll in all, the day seemed to be a success and early lights were a welcom e sig h t for everybody.

FALL DANCE T he first dance of the season was held O ctober 23, 1965 . W ith th e help of T h e S a t a n s w e got off to a good start. A t the b eg in n in g all of the boys w ere in one crow d and, in another, the girls. T h ro u g h the needling of the faculty, we started asking girls to dance w ith us. By the tim e an h o u r had passed I do not th in k one person was n o t enjoying him self. From my p o in t of view and others, this was the best dance th a t the school has had in tw o years. W ith th e help of Mrs. H azen and Mrs. C ham berlain and others, we were able to get the decorations up. T h e them e of H allow een was carried out.

AWARDS BANQUET

T h e Aw ards B anquet this year was one of th e best. A long w ith the fine m eal provided by Clancy, speeches w ere given by Rocky Ingalls, H alsey Sm ith, G ordon D evereaux, W a rre n M orris and H ardy L ittleton. T h e M aster of Cerem onies was A ustin M orris. T h e aw ards w ere w on by Carl N ydegger w ho was the M ost V aluable Football Player, Jo h n T h ax ter — M ost Im proved Football Player, C. G. W INTER DANCE

O n D ecem ber 12, 1965, the second dance of the school year was held once again in the gaily decorated d in in g room . P reparations had been well arranged by a sm all g ro u p of m adly artistic students w o rk in g faithfully th ro u g h the week. A q u iet atm osphere m ingled w ith the massive am plifiers and Christm assy orna m ents d a n g lin g from the ceilings. A m id these surroundings the dance started at 7:30. T he dance started w ith a w him per, not a bang. T he first few num bers saw only a few, stray couples on the dance floor. H ow ever, the dance progressed, and soon everyone was enjoying him self. Such was the hearty sp irit show n by the p articip an ts th at they survived w hen the am plifiers broke dow n on the student e n tertain m en t gro u p , T H E SATANS. A fter a b rief interlude of belated folk sing ing by tw o m em bers of T H E SA TAN S the dance ended at 10:30, w ith the hope of fu rth e r successes. ¼

T h e service included Christm as selections sung by the C ardigan C hoir and a serm on by the Rev. B roadhurst. O ur guest soloist was Miss D iane D ickinson w ho sang "O h H oly N ig h t.

SKI HOLIDAY

O n M arch 8, 1966, w e had school ski holiday and arrived at K illin g to n Ski A rea in V erm ont w ith four buses of avid skiers. T h e snow conditions w ere good to excellent. W e had no casualties such as broken legs — only a few broken skis. O u r ladies’ m an of th e day was Rod Parm ley. T h e stu n t m an of th e day was Jo h n T h a x ter w ho m ade a fantastic jum p. W insor Rowe, a talented skier, lost his poise long enough to ru n over Mrs. R ouillard. T his year’s lacrosse team proved to be a new experience for th e school. O ur gam es this year w ere played on an interscholastic basis fo r th e first tim e, and we showed a g reat deal of im provem ent over last year’s scrub team . For m ost of the squad, including th e coaches, M r. C ham berlain and M r. R ouillard, lacrosse was a com pletely new experience. M any failed to realize w hich end of th e stick was used for catching and throw ing. H ow ever, after the first few practices th in g s w ere straightened out. W h en gam e tim e rolled around the team in general was ill prepared be cause of uncooperative w eather. A lthough K.U .A. defeated us 7-3, w e gained m ore th an th ere was to lose. A fter correcting m any of ou r m istakes, o u r next encounter w ith H olderness was closer th an had been expected. A lth o u g h again defeated, ou r team showed a great deal of im provem ent. Proctor, th e next gam e scheduled, was p robably the toughest team w e had gone u p against thus far. A gain w e w ere im proved and lost by a score of only 6-4. By the tim e w e w ere ready to encounter Holderness, w e w ere tired of losing. T h e team p u t o u t one hundred p er cent to w in th e gam e in a tw o period overtim e by a score of 4-3. W h en w e played P roctor for the second tim e w e w ere still on th e upgrade. O ur team p l a y ^ its m ost successful gam e of th e season, and the P roctor squad was dom inated for the fu ll th irty-tw o m inutes. How ever, C ardigan caught on the w rong end, and P roctor defeated us 2-0. O ur last gam e was th e m ost d isappointing to everyone. K.U .A. defeated us 4-2. T h e outlook fo r next year seems hopeful since m any of ou r letterm en are retu rn in g . W ith the know ledge gained this year, next year’s team w ill be a m ore experienced squad looking for m ore victories th an defeats.
