UP & AWAY AT C.M.S.

FALL WAS A FROLIC,

i I

II

This fall was filled with m any great surprises and shows. W e were treated to a rousing perform ance by the Yale sing足 ing group. M ixed C om pany. The students' quick wit and hum or kept us laughing for the whole show. M an y return足 ing boys also had been looking forward to hearing their new routine and to seeing if any new girls had been added to the group. The talent show was also a welcome break in the pace of our mundane lives. W e were treated to some great acts (and some not-so-great acts), but all in all the talent show was a resounding success. The entertainm ent ranged from a faculty rendition of the soft shoe to a heated debate on Pig Sym pathy.

66

67

FALL WEEKEND WAS COLORFUL

Brilliant fall foliage greeted parents who visited this year. Sons dem onstrated all that they had learned during the early part of the year. Some played football, others soccer, while still others hung around with their parents. The faculty outdid them selves in being friendly and hospitable, and found time to be entertaining as well. O n M onday m orning we all headed to Sandwich, N ew H am pshire, for the annual fair. Some people watched the animal judging, while others heard political candidates and m usical groups in between the rain showers; but everybody ate - pizza, fried dough, French fries, cotton candy, candied apples, fudge, etc., etc., etc. Then to settle our stom achs we went on a few carnival rides. 68

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM WAS FAR OUT

Beyond the C lassroom was an educational, yet entertaining week for m ost of the students. W e were treated to a dem onstration by W alter C hestnut of how the trum pet developed and how it sounded at different stages of its life. He concluded with a trum pet voluntary which he had composed especially for Cardigan M ountain School. A nother popular aspect of the week was the Egg Drop C ontest, sponsored by the M ath Departm ent, which appealed to the com petative spirit in all of us. After planning, developing, and constructing prototypes, we were ready to let them fly from the top of the ski jum p. Com edy A ttack provided needed com ic relief in the middle of the week, with their hilari足 ous routine and am azing acrobatics. The history departm ent asked M r. and M rs. Carey to tell of their experiences in serving for two years with the Peace Corps in Turkey. O ne of the more serious aspects of the week was a deeply per足 sonal talk by M s. Ellen Rosenberg focusing on im proving our self-im age and learning to respect others' feelings.

'86 PAGEANT IS CROWD PLEASER.

The C hristm as Pageant this year brought out a large crowd to see the well-rehearsed perform ance. K irk Peebles did an excellent job as the M odern Shepherd, reciting the story of "th e boy on the w rong side of tow n " and teaching us all a lesson on how to treat our fellow man. O ther parts were played as follows: N arrators - H ank Jones and Doug W endt, M ary - M rs. DeLallo, Joseph - Amos Paine, the three kings - Yukka Pentinnen, Chad Ferguson, and H ugh Russell, the shepherds - Leigh W eld, Ben Geogehan, Chris lovino, and O wen Cary. M any thanks to M r. M ahoney for m aking this C hristm as Pageant especially memorable.

SENIORS LOOK TO PREP SCHOOL.

At the end of our Eighth Grade year we students began thinking about applying to Senior Prep Schools. After m eet足 ing with M r. H icks, we filled out preference sheets about what sort of schools we wanted to look at. In the fall of our N inth Grade we searched through school catalogues and directories to find just w hat we wanted and then we talked to representatives of the different prep schools who visited cam pus with their slide shows, m ovies, and sometim es graduates of Cardigan who attend their schools. N ext we visited some of the schools we thought would be best for us and we filled out application form s. Then cam e the hardest part, w riting the essays that went with the form s. W e asked several of our teachers to w rite recom m endations for us. N ow we m ust wait while the schools make their decisions. W e hope we can be accepted at our first choice and we're all anxious as M arch 10 gets closer.

FOLKS BRAVE COLD.

76

Over one hundred and fifty parents faced frigid weather and trudged through deep snow to participate in a wonderful W inter W eekend this year. W e will never forget M r. Tom Sullivan's talk. There were sports events for everyone - basketball and w restling inside and hockey, Alpine, and N ordic skiing outside. The dedication of the C hristian H um ann Theatre on Satur足 day afternoon showed the range of events which could be performed there, including those shown here: a juggler, a singing group from D artm outh, scenes from "T h e Secret Life of W alter M itty ." Parents' W eekend was an enorm ous success and was enjoyed by both parents and students.

THURSDAY MEANS CLUBDAY.

O nce a week students take a break from their norm al activities and attend a club which they choose at the beginning of each term .Som e of the m any choices they have are T -sh irt designing, magic, conditioning, cabin restoration, walking, canoeing, model rocketry, and the everpopular acro-bikics club. M r. Carey, the director of clubs, w orks hard to make clubs fun and his effort is appreciated.

Clubs can be colorful, too. The I m em bers of the Blaze work hard each week to produce this publication and often put in extra time on weekends and late afternoons. The ceram ics and indoor gam es clubs provide relaxation and a change of pace. The video club could be found taking photos and or足 ganizing them to produce a com edy video as well as some individual pro足 jects.

50 GOAL SEASON FOR VARSITY Front Row: McLean, Nusbaum, Whitehead, Needham, Finnerty, Hartmann, Franklin. Back Row: Mr. DeLallo (Coach), Penttinen, Buffone, Taufman, Huot, Smi ley, Barclay, Paine, Pereira, Mr. Brier (Coach). This year. Varsity Soccer closed its season with a 9-5-1 re cord. On November 8th we trav elled to Eaglebrook and returned with a 4th overall placing at the New England Junior Prep School Tournament. We com pleted this year with an amazing 50 goals and a new record by goalkeeper George Needham with 10 shutouts.

J.V. - 100% IMPROVEMENT First Row: Dantos, Murdough, C., Wright, Rome, Weld, Calder. Second Row: Mr. Decker (Coa ch), Outlaw, Englander, Butler, Schmidt, Casas, Emerson, Fran co. Third Row: Hunt, McLen nan, Ferguson, Flanigan, Duda, Mr. Gundaker (Coach).

Junior Varsity had a season of mixed success which ultimately resulted in a 9-3-1 record. It is enough to say that when we de cided to use the basics of passing and dribbling that the shooting opened up for us. We also learned that the best soccer is sometimes played in a losing ef fort.

RESERVE A BURNS THE BIRD Front Row: Whitcomb, Ray, Shore, Wagner, Israel, Martinez, Husson, lovino. Back Row: Mr. Barron (Coach), Morgan, White sides, Walker, Shirazi, Kiley, Dinan, Fogg, Rossmassler, Mr. Smith (Coach). Forrest: “Mr. Brier, how come I didn't make Varsity?" Luis: "Pass zee ball over chere..” Mark: “You have a definite atti tude problem." Cody: “Hey, yall! It's so simple!" Mr. Barron: "Sugar! Sugar! Get off the field Sugar!"

"CRUNCHBERRY DRILLS" First Row: Hicks, Rafferty, Montanus. Second Row: Landa, Guedel, Mainelli, Seabolt, Pol lock, Pfeifle, Bell, Mr. Low (Coa ch). Third Row: Mr. Mathews (Coach), Thomas R., Marvell, Kancer, Ernstof, W inter, Lanigan. Reserve B had a slow start this season, as was evident in our 9-1 loss to Eaglebrook. Unfortunate ly, we had to drop out of the Upper Valley Tournament, one thing we were looking forward to. We finished the season with a win over West Lebanon, 4-2, and a 3-4-1 record. 89

JUNIORS BEAT THE BIRD Front Row: deLage, Henkel, Turner, Cary, Mainelli, Loeb, Thrall, Wendt D. Back Row: Robertson, Winter, Taylor, Grogean (Captain), Savage, Stor m ont, Mr. Clark (Coach), Summers. There were three highlights in our season. These were a 3-2 vic tory over Eaglebrook from be hind, a tournament win over Bow, and a late season rout of Canaan. Fortunately, we had a fun and injury-free season.

ROPES RAPPELLED ROCKS First Row: Reese, Edy, Green stone, Taub, Glossberg, Frazier. Second Row: Albert, Avion, Ho gan, Wendt G., Eitel, Coulter, Berner, Misrahi, Manheim. Third Row: Mr. Dingle (Coach), Nigra, Ganley, McCann, Conly, Lee, Ms. McLendon (Coach), Decker, Mr. Hennessey (Coach). Rock climbing really sepa rates the men from the boys. We had to face the worst extremes of altitude sickness at 50 to 75 feet.

INTRAMURALS: WE ARE # l! Front Row: Hallowell, Thomas R., Mr. Carey (Coach), Russell, Nouri, Marti, Thomas T. Back Row: Mr. Ramos (Coach), Vidal, Geoghegan, Robinson, Mr. Hart (Coach). As always, the Intramurals group had a heavy schedule of flag football scrimmages. We also went canoeing and explored Orange Gorge as well as hiking and swimming. Sometimes we even got the canoes in the water.

Front Row: Mr. Small (Coach), Col足 lins, Sirgutz, Wiberg, Fisherman, Wang, Mr. Tautkus (Coach). Back Row: Scully, Price, Mclnerney, Se足 villa, Kahn. This year's Cross Country team had a good season, considering that we raced against high school teams. At our peak in the season, we were able to finish fifth place out of eight teams. We hope that next year the underclassmen will be able to fill the running shoes of our four seniors.

WE TRIED . . . AND TRIED Front Row: Co-Captains: Jones, Durey, Powers. Sitting: Kuckly, Amos, Musburger, Marshall, Tebbetts, Register, Daly, Littlepage, Campbell, Marrion, Beard (Manager). Standing: Mr. Col lins (Coach), Shaff (Manager), Cordon D., Kislak, Walsh, Diebel. Golden, Spinks, Maxfield, Alford, Mr. Willett (Coach), Mr. Marrion (Coach). Winning our final game of the season against a previously un defeated Plymouth team reward ed our season-long enthusiasm.

"W HO FORGOT THE WHITE FLAG?” First Row; Murdough P., Dennis, Lowe, Sullivan T., Becerra, RuizGalindo, Smith T., Ellis. Second Row: Clark, Glickstein, Ciampa, Barnum, Wingate, Sullivan D., Cedrone, Gordon T., Tibbetts, Hord. Third Row: Mr. Schenck (Coach), Marks, Boegner, Roach, Gordon K., Gengo, Chase, Muckermann, Rich ards, Mr. Health (Coach). Although we had a tough season, several of our games were close and we made good progress through the season. Tom Sullivan's quarterbacking & running often lent ex citement to our games. 92

ALPINE A WAXED EAGLEBROOK Front Row: Smiley, Huot, Shore, Lowe, Barclay. Back Row: Al bert, Mr. Hennessey (Coach), Duda, Schmidt. Our first competition was a giant slalom on our home slope, against 6 other schools from the Lakes Region. We won the meet by 13 places, setting a trend for the rest of the season. In the Lakes Region races, we posted a record of 5 firsts, 2 seconds, and 1 third. Even though we domi nated these races, our biggest thrill was beating the Bird on Parent's Weekend.

MOST SUCCESSFUL B TEAM EVER! First Row: Shore, Pollock. Second Row: Guedel, Schriebl, lovino, Wingate, Morgan, Ernstof. Back Row: Mr. Hennessey (Coach), Mr. Brier (Coach), Conly, Miss McLen don (Coach) After training at a Gould Acade my ski clinic, the 6 members of Alpine B entered the Lakes Region races with the C team, taking a 4th and 5th place against 8 other teams of Varsity level. We finished up the season with a 1st place at a wild end-of-season race. With this per formance, we have proven that we will be a very strong team next year. 93

NORDIC SKIERS RAN AND JUMPED Kneeling: Lee, Wendt G., Marshall. Standing; Mr. Carey (Coach), Wiberg, Mclnerney, Mr. Heath (Coa足 ch). This year was a building year for Nordic Skiers. We did a little jump足 ing and alot of running. The high足 light of our season was a Parents' Weekend convincing win over arch-rival Eaglebrook.

97

HEIGHT MAKES RIGHT Sitting; Kahn, Amos, Musburger, Rowe. Standing: Mr. Ramos (Coa足 ch), Golden, Paine, Ferguson, Chase, Keough, Kiley.

RUNNIN' & GUNNIN' IS OUR GAME Sitting: Kooluris, Thrall, Mus足 burger, Rowe, Wiberg. Standing: Mr. W illett (Coach), Keough, Chase, Kiley, Taub (Manager).

98

VARSITY GRAPPLERS HAD DEPTH Kneeling: Walsh, Franklin, de Lage, Reardon, Montanus, Nusbaum. Standing; Mr. Schenck (Coach), Misrahi, Glickstein, Jones, Maxfield, Durey, Mr. Bar ron (Coach). In this, the 5th year of the Car digan Mountain wrestling pro gram, the team had its best sea son yet, doing well in both tournaments and dual meets. Notably, Hank Jones had the only perfect record in 5 years, managing a 22 - 0 record and David Franklin had a recordbreaking 21 pins.

DESTROYERS DO JUST THAT Kneeling: Thomas T., Coulter, Crowley, Franco, Clark. Standing: Mr. Schenck (Coach), Edy, Robert son, McCarthy, Misrahi, Mr. Bar ron (Coach). This season, for the first time in the history of CMS wrestling, we had an active J.V. team. In spite of our inexperience, the Destroyers managed to end the season by stamping out a tough Plymouth team 76 to 40.

99

REC. SAILORS CIRCUMNAVIGATE COVE Thomas T., Mr. Carey (Coach), Eitel, Lanigan, Beard. Recreational sailors had fun this spring learning the funda足 mentals of sailing and tactics. We found plenty of wind in the cove and managed not to get too wet.

m

GONE WITH THE WIND Front: Dennis, Shambaugh, Stormont. Middle: Misrahi, Mr. Willett (Coach), Avion, Glossberg, Calder. Back: Becerra, Berner, Frazier. The "Going Out for Dinner" team had a fun, if not victorious season. Our tremendous record of 0 and 4 was made possible by racing the senior prep schools at Dublin, Northfield Mt. Hermon, and Brewster, whose sail足 ors had been racing three years or more than any of us; but we had a wonderful time. We were good until we had to race some足 one. 100

VARSITY LACROSSE GOES UNDEFEATED Front Row: Aaron Heath. Sec足 ond Row: Amos, Walsh, Marrion, Daly, Nusbaum, Campbell, Dantos. Third Row: Mr. Gundaker (Coach), Schmidt, Buffone, McLennan, Finnerty, Kuckly, Powers, Duda, Mr. Heath (Coa足 ch). Back Row: Durey, Conly, Needham, Jones, Whitehead, Pereira. It was a season to end all sea足 sons. Although quiet in terms of announcements, we were un足 beatable on the field. The attack and middies combined for a total of 100 goals to our opposition's 19. The defense staged four shutouts and allowed an average of only 1.7 goals per game, with Brendan in goal.

HALF A TEAM IS BETTER THAN NONE Front Row: Ferguson, Ganley, Mclnerney, Russell. Back Row: Dantos, Murdough C., Gilbert, Mr. Mathews (Coach). J.V. Lacrosse came into being because there was a need for a team for ninth graders who were interested in the sport but lacked experience. Our first goal was to learn to catch and throw the ball correctly and to play together as a team, which was sometimes a challenge since we usually had only eight men on the field.

101

WIN OVER EAGLEBROOK CAPS SEASON First Row: Schirazi, Smith E., Smith J., Israel, Wagner, Frankliii, Morgan. Second Row; Mr. Low (Coach), Kancer, Pfeifle, Seabolt, Reardon, lovino, Husson, Rossmassler, Schriebl, Mr. Brier (Coach). Third Row: Gor足 don K., Chase, Dinan, White足 sides, Gengo, Fogg, Sullivan D. This year Reserve A Lacrosse had a very good season. By the end of the spring we had im足 proved significantly and com足 bined of new skills and spirit to successfully beat the Bird 9-6, which was the highlight of our season.

IT DOESN'T HURT TO BE LUCKY Sitting: Bell, Collins, Wingate, Ellis, Rowe, Nouri. Standing: Murdough P., Clark, WhiteThomson, Grogean, McCann, Mr. Clark (Coach). This year Reserve B Lacrosse surprised itself. After a first game loss to Hanover, we ran off eight straight wins. Not all those victories were easy. Greg Bell's goal with 20 seconds in the game gave us a 7 - 6 win over Kearsarge and Jesse Hord scored with only 2 seconds left to defeat Eaglebrook 3-2.

102

MICKEY D'S SPELLS MOTIVATION Front: Hartmann, Ruiz-Galindo, Sullivan T., Martinez, Barclay. Back: Wiberg, Glickstein, Kahn, Hogan, Register, Penttinen, Englander, Mr. Ra mos (Coach). This year's Varsity Tennis team finished 8 and 3. One of the highlights of our season was a close match against Deerfield Academy. Even though we lost 5 - 4, everyone played well and was determined to win. We shar pened our skill by doing drill activities and we strengthened our competitiveness by playing frequent challenge matches.

SWEET SIXTEEN DO IT AGAIN Front Row: Ray, Sirgutz, Mar vell, Lowe, Whitcomb, Turner. Second Row; Mr. Hart (Coach), Butler, Gordon D., Richards. Third Row: Flanigan and Henkel. J.V. Tennis this year had six teen boys ready and always will ing to play. Our record of four and three included three wins over Woodstock and a defeat of Eaglebrook. There was a lot of movement on the ladder this year, and sometimes players even moved up to Varsity for a while.

103

VARSITY BASEBALL - A SWINGING SEASON Front Row; Tebbetts, McLean, Musburger, Shore, Tibbetts, Cedrone. Weld. Back Row: Mr. Marrion (Coach), Kiley, Kislak, Littlepage, Hunt, Mr. ColUns (Coach). Varsity Baseball was a young, inexperienced team with only six Seniors. We had a slow start and both our coaches realized we'd need hard work and an emphasis on fundam entals. Throughout much of the season we played inconsistent ball; but we managed strong wins over Bow, K.U.A., and Woodstock in the last three games of the year.

J.V.: THE IRON WEB GETS RUSTY First Row: Hicks, Montanus, Rafferty. Second Row: Taylor, Gordon, Landa, Barnum, Kooluris, Mr. Smith (Coach). Third Row: Mr. Schenck (Coach), Muckerman, Keogh, Alford. Our season was not a victori足 ous one, for we had a young and inexperienced team; but good ef足 fort, coaching and hitting got us a lot of close games. Our best game of the season was against an older Woodstock team. In the game we pitched, hit and fielded well, and managed to pull off a tie.

104

CYCLING- 400 MILES FOR PRACTICE Wang, Wendt G., Roach, Al bert, Reese, Mr. Decker (Coach). The 1987 Cycling season was a great success with good weather and few mechanical break downs. Our squad was broken into two skill levels and we rode together daily on rides which av eraged between 15 and 23 miles. We learned and shared mainte nance skills, like how to true a wheel and the importance of not completely removing chain riv ets.

RESERVE BASEBALL BREAKS IN '^MR. D'

m

M

Front Row: Loeb, Thrall, Boegner, de Lage, Robertson, Mr. Dellalo (Coach). Back Row: Marks, Winter, Savage, Wendt D., Nigra. With only eleven players on Reserve Baseball we all got lots of playing time. Our first game was a hard loss -over 20 points to Hanover; but by the end of the season we had beaten Eaglebrook 29 - 7.

105

REC. TENNIS GOES UNDEFEATED Front Row: Geoghegan, Hallowell, Robinson. Second Row: Miss McLendon (Coach), Outlaw, Greenstone. Back Row: Heenan, Ernstof, Thomas R., Paine, Prescott, Taufman. Th-Th-This is w-wanna be Ma-Max Headroom s-speaking for Rec-Rec-Recreational Ten nis. Th-Th-This spring RecRec-Recreational Tennis was un-undefeated. Th-Those chil dren from E-Eaglebrook didn't even challenge us. N-Neighboring v-villages c-cringed when tthey heard about TEAM TOMAHAWK AND RECRE ATIONAL TENNIS.

WILDERNESS GAINS BEARINGS Guedel, Coulter, Crowley, Pol lock, Mr. Henessey. Wilderness started off with orienteering and created an ori enteering course which encom passes the whole campus. Next we practiced rock climbing tech niques on the ropes course. At the end of the year we learned canoeing strokes and safety pro cedures. Then we went to the Baker River for an afternoon for some experience with Class 1 rapids.

106

TRACK RAN IN CIRCLES Front Row: Decker, Lee, Ca足 sas, Edy, Mr. Barron (Coach). Back Row: Andrade, En\erson, Price, Sevilla, Summers. The Track team had a disap足 pointing season on the outside, but if you were to look more deeply, you would see we all im足 proved.Three school records were broken this season: the 400 by Santiago Casas, the Triple Jump by Gabe Lee, and the 1500 by both Casas and Lee in a tie. The team achieved its goal of having everyone beat Mr. Wakely in the Race Around the Lake.

C-TEAM SKIERS LOST IN BLIZZARD Greenstone, Lee, Littlepage, Peebles, Pereira, Rome, Sevilla, Ms. McLendon (Coach). The newly created Alpine C Team consisted of seven Seniors who started in the Instructional Skiing program and wanted to learn how to race. Not only did we race on Sundays, but we also raced against Applewild, Eaglebrook, and Proctor, as well as in Lakes Region races. In the last race of the season, our team took 2nd place to the B Team with finishes of 3rd, 5th, 8th, and 10th places individually. 107

THE 1987 BLAZE IS NOT DEDICATED TO MR. STEPHEN HEATH BECAUSE:

HE TIES THE BIGGEST NECKTIE KNOTS. HE'S TOO STRICT IN AND OUT OF CLASS. HE SPENDS HIS TIME PRETENDING TO BE A FIREMAN. HE'S ALL WET.

SOME OF HIS REDEEMING FEATURES:

THE TIME HE SPENDS IN THE DARKROOM MAKES LIFE EASIER FOR US. HE'S VERY STRICT IN AND OUT OF CLASS. HE'S ABLE TO TAKE US PLACES FASTER THAN ANY OTHER BUS DRIVER. HE WAS ABLE TO CREATE A TEAM OF PERFECTION IN VARSITY LA足 CROSSE. r
