A beautiful day in New Hampshire

a

V JL-/

T / r a d it i^ H ikt the beginning of the year, the new Cardigan boys, the >enior leaders, and new faculty woke up at four in the norning to climb a mountain. Still dozing off, we arrived at /lount Cardigan. Although it was a tough moment for some >f us due to our lack of hiking experience, we overcame our irst adversity in our Cardigan career and reached the top of i/lount Cardigan. Feeling a cool, light breeze, we waited >atientiy to see an amazing, beautiful sunrise, symbolizing he start of our Cardigan life. One amazing fact about this rear's group is that everyone reached the top before the iunrise, so all of us were able to see it.

"It's a fresh start of the year!" - Kevin Choi

Headmaster David McCusker, Jr. '80

What a privilege it is to live and work at Cardigan Mountain School. Our life together on The Point is "full and rich" with opportunities to learn and grow, as individuals and as a community. We have high standards here and clear expectations about what we value in terms of personal responsibility as well as guiding principles for a positive and healthy community. I am consistently impressed by how well we do to meet and exceed our ambitious goals. I'm convinced that we do so because we value and develop close personal relationships and place a great emphasis on having a lot of fun along the way. Congratulations to one and all on another fantastic year on The Point. Good luck to our 9th grade boys—you reflect so well on Cardigan Mountain School and I'm proud of all of you.

This year our Cross Country team had great performances in 8 races and 32 practices. Whether we were running thirty minutes up hills or running 8 sets of 400 meters in the rain, our Cougars put their best efforts into it. ILast year our team finished 3rd place in a league of 15 high j school teams. We are in the Lakes Region Mountain Bike Series ^League. Since we did well last year, but lost our fastest biker we ' set a goal of finishing in the top three this year. Kaston Day, Henry Cormier, and Cam Lee are three of our new, fastest riders and they helped us out alot. Our returners were Noah Drummond, Emery Gray, and JR Kreuzburg. We also got a new 7th grader named Luke Cuticelli.

Cur hi^hlkhts We had a nun^er of riders move up in thier speed classification. Each of the boys increased with their endurance and bike handiling skills. When Eaglebrook raced us at Procter we placed first and second, and swept one, two, and three in the B — classification.

The team chosen this year was a group of hard working guys willing to do whatever it took to win. Not only did we work hard but we also had fun on and off the field.Throughout the season we continued to work on what we felt we were weakest in, whether it was free kicks or onetouch passing. Highlights from this season included Josh Jordan's outstanding game against Belmont Hill, Juan Pablo Ortega's penalty kicks, and Sam Koh's absolutely beautiful snipe from 30 yards out in our game against Tilton. This year, I feel that our soccer team had a great season, and I am pretty sure my teammates would agree. -- Ward Betts

HOMECOMING While we aren’t exactly sure to whom we should give credit for this, but we couldn’t have scripted better autumn “ambiance” for a fall Homecoming Weekend if we’d tried—with the warm(!) and brilliant sunshine, the cloudless blue skies, the ubiquitous CMS green-and-white flags and banners, and those unique foliage colors just beginning to reveal themselves.

Sporting the school spirit t-shirts "Strength and Honor" all our athletes did just thatcompeted with strength and honor. Our soccer and cross-country both experienced mixed success in their contests against Eaglebrook. JV Soccer was able to celebrate a victory, and Reserve Soccer was proud of its 1-1 tie (though it should be noted that all four of the soccer games were hard-fought and closely contested). Despite some mild disappointment in the overall racing “team” results for Cross Country, Cardigan was able to boast a few individual highlights. Our mighty mountain bikers saw five members of their team reach the podium “ two in the upper division, and a clean sweep of first, second, third in the lower division! ►ur Varsity and JV Football teams enjoyed a couple of sound center-stage victories over our friends from the south. Athletic Director Ryan Frost noted, with an overall record on the day of 4-3-1, it was our first autumn “overall victory” over our friendly rivals in some time!

As you may recall, Tuesday, September 27, was declared “Mountain Day,” which meant classes were suspended in favor of outdoor (uphill) adventures by grad« The sixth and seventh graders tackled the double humped Welch-Dickey. The eighth graders faced the challenge of Mount Moosilauke. And the ninth graders grappled with the sometimes-daunting Osceola. The sk; could not have been clearer, though, and the sun provided glorious warmth, so packs were light and spirits and fellowship high.

Recreational skiing and snowboarding had a wonderful season even though we had little snow. Ragged Mountain did a great job making snow so about three to four times a week all thirtyfive of us loaded ourselves and our STUFF onto the bus for the thirty-five minute trip to the mountain. Snowboarders have begun to outnumber the skiers by more than two to one. It was a tight fit, but we managed without too much difficulty. The beginner skiers and snowboarders quickly got the hang of their respective modes of transportation and were up to the ’summit of the mountain in no time. We had a couple of injuries, which kept two boys off the mountain for most of the winter. But for the most part we all had a blast skiing and shredding in the warmer than average weather.

Turner Arena was abuzz with activity on Sunday, February 26, as Cardigan hosted alumni, family, and friends for the 25th Annual Alumni Hockey Game. Formerly a challenge between the alumni and Cardigan’s varsity team, the game has now grown in popularity to allow alumni, coaches, and CMS seniors to make up two well-matched teams. This year’s game ended in a 13-11 victory for the Green team. After the game, the players, families, and friends enjoyed the traditional post-game reception at Frieze House, where they were delighted to visit with Cardigan legends, “Coach” and Connie Marrion, and former first couple, Norman and Beverly Wakely.

CARDIGAN BOYS PUT TH EIR BEST EFFO RTS FORW ARD

Cardigan's curriculum is designed to support and challenge each student as the School prepares him for the demanding academic programs characteristic of the independent schools most graduates attend. Mastery of fundamental skills and exploration of content is emphasized in all disciplines. The curriculum provides each student with instruction in all the core courses of English, history, mathematics, and science. Exposure to a number of other complementary subject areas including world languages (French, Spanish, or Latin) or BCE (Building Confidence in English), life skills, leadership, art, music, woodshop, and the Gates Invention and Innovation Competition rounds out the curriculum. PEAKS (Personalized Education for the Acquisition of Knowledge & SkillsÂŽ) helps students become better learners and self-advocates. Advisory and Conference period enables our boys to talk one-to-one with their advisor or classroom teachers to get the help and support they may need to keep up with their work

The sixth grade family has been very busy learning and exploring! The students started the year by creating a sixth grade country, Sixtheo. To help the students better understand our unit regarding Asia they traveled to the Hood Museum of Art in Hanover, NH to view the exhibits on Asian art and how it evolved over time. In November the students learned about the physics of motion in cars by creating their own pinewood derby automobiles. Thanks to Mr. Yelton, the students were able to race their cars on a state-of-the-art track in the classroom. The highlight of the fall term was an overnight trip to The Sargent Camp in Hancock, NH where the students had the opportunity to participate in various team building exercises while learning about science and nature. The sixth graders are anxiously awaiting their brook trout babies from the hatchery sometime in February. They are also looking forward to the annual Cape Cod excursion in April.

The seventh grade students have a busy and productive schedule. The usual classes in English, history, science, math and languages are often augmented with special events, projects and field trips.

/ In the fall, we journeyed to the Fort at Number Four in Charleston and learned about life in / colonial times, made our own butter, and watched a musket-firing demonstration. We also cleaned up roads in Canaan. In English and PEAKS, the boys grew as creative writers; the focus for the second lalf of the year was expository writing. The seventh graders also participated in several special days, such "Cardigan Risk," where students created their own colonies and the Constitutional Convention, where 's created their own constitution for the Cardigan campus. In science, the Living Laboratory kept the ^ ys busy, especially with the addition of over 100 mice! The year ended with frog-call surveys on the wild pack roads of Canaan, as well as a final very exciting field trip to explore the Upper Valley. We will volunteer at the local elementary school, sharing foreign languages with the children.

From a Presidential Election in History (the choices: Roosevelt, Taft, or Wilson), to a new midterm exam format for Science that was exciting and innovative, the eighth grade students had some interesting classes. In Science instead of a full-on sit-down test, more than half of this exann period consisted of an active experience that assessed students’ ability to follow instructions, to demonstrate their understanding of science laboratory experiments, to use what they’ve learned about basic physical science concepts, to use relevant computer (and calculator) applications, and to think critically and problem solve with teammates. For the U.S. presidential election of 1912, the students were required to “campaign” for that historical figure, to come up with an appropriate campaign poster, use their IMovie capability to create a commercial, and then have their “candidate” deliver a speech. The students (and anyone visiting the class to witness the final presentations) then voted for president based on the groups’ performances.

From the history research project to science experiments to leadership skills to independent study, the 9th grade students are learning about their abilities. Mr. Kreuzburg’s ninth graders were grappling with some chemistry—specifically the energy in cells and the search for “ATP” molecules—which later culminated In exploding gum drops! Mr. Cook’s class discussed their project of comparing concurrent civilizations—those of the Assyrians, Hebrews, and the Akkadians, to be specific. Director of Communications, Mrs. Michelson, made a guest appearance in Mr. Cook’s ninth-grade history cla sses to share some of her extensive knowledge about Egypt. During the winter term all ninth grade students write their history research paper. This is a major project teaching not only history, but the research process as well.

Cardigan is more than a scliool. W e are a caring community witli tine residential program at the core. The skills learned living with a roommate, dorm parents, floor leaders and other students are invaluable in helping students build personal relationships throughout their lives. Their dorm rooms are their home and quickly take on the personalities of each boy. In the Hayward Dining Hall, family style dining provides the opportunity to for boys to sit with faculty members, their families, and boys they may not see in their classes or at sports and to carry on polite conversation. The dining hall is also the location for our many of special feasts, from Halloween to Christmas and to special buffet meals celebrating the many cultures represented at Cardigan.

Being School leader is like being ■ put on the main stage of Carnegie ■ Hall facing a full house. I constantlyM have a churning feeling in my I stomach as I see all the people I waiting to see me perform. On the I private balcony, I see people like I my advisor, the headmaster, and _ even my parents as they elegantly BHHHHHHHHHHHH * await my entrance. The curtains feel as though they open abruptly, not giving me a chance to get my composure. I stare into the sea of people, who are all looking back. My heart rate increases and all I hear is that thumping, but I put on a brave smile and do what I have practiced to do all along. It Is an amazIng opportunity and honor yet it also comes with

f accomplish, but I have learned so much from the experience V The hardest part of this honor is also the most fulfilling one. I is balancing my emotions and the intention of the community M that can be so challenging. Although they are usually in |j*j unison, there are times that I want to be myself So if ever faced with a similar situation, I recommend that you be yourself People elected you for who you are and not who you they think you could or should be.

Each spring the school holds elections to fill the leadership positions for the following year. After the school leader is elected, the remaining candidates and the other students with the highest leadership rankings are selected by the faculty for the remaining positions. All students who aspire to leadership roles at Cardigan need to demonstrate the ability to work independently and to balance academic commitments with other school responsibilities. The selected leaders are announced at the Investiture Ceremony in mid-May

Cardigan Hymn Lyrics by Robert C. Hopkins

To Cardigan, our favored school By nature's gifts benignWe raise our song of tiiankfulness For beauty wliich is tliine: For winter's snow, For afterglow When day fades into dreams Of goals toward which we all will strive To keep Thy faith alive; To keep Thy faith in us alive. Together we will strive.

As Cardigan is mirrored in Our crystal lake so clear May we through life reflect Thy truths And memories so dear; Of summer's green; Fall's colors bright; Of glimmering stars at night. God give us strength to carry on Through storm or weather fair The peace, vouchsafed by living here, For all the world to share.

Our fantastic season, 18 wins, 1 loss was the result of our goals to emphasize execution, fundamentals and small ball. We played simply and defensively to make the routine plays routinely. Our season was complete with our win over ^ Eaglebrook in our final game of the year.

JV Baseball

With a record of 10 wins and 2 losses, the JV Baseball team had a very successful season. Working hard together, the players showed their team spirit and dedication to their sport.

Well Done Boys!

In their final game against Eaglebrook, the Cougars were involved in a pretty tight game going into the fifth inning. Henry Day and J J Layton pitched well. With loaded bases in the fifth inning, Peter Cleveland came to the plate and lined a double down the right field line, scoring three runs and breaking the game open. There were quite a few highlights, each player contributed defensively or offensively. Well done boys!

Highlights inctuded George Ouyang our awesome runner, Joey Mayer our catcher who could hustle to the ball before the runner could steal a base, our power hitters Mingo Trevino and Jack Jiang, our pitchers Bryan Chen, Jake An, and Juan Pablo Velasco. Also, our outfielders and infielders did awesome work catching, throwing, and communicating with their teammates. We had an epic season!

Varsity Lacrosse The Varsity Lacrosse season was nothing short of successful. Everyone was encouraged to give their full effort at all times, which helped us to a 14-5 record. Our coaches taught discipline and toughness during every practice and that training carried over into our games. At all times we respected and listened to the extensive knowledge of our coaches. Outside of the field we were known as Thirds and Reserve Lacrosse, but once we stepped on the field we were one! We played for each other and gave our best. We were successful with only two losses, both of them really close and tight games. We learned from our mistakes and always went out to win. We had three daily goals: be better than anyone thinks you can, make your teammates look like superstars, and finally and most importantly, honor the game.

Varsity Boys Lakes Region Cliampions Our Varsity Tennis team plays varsity secondary prep school teams, which means our players often find themselves up against juniors and seniors in high school. On May 22, the Varsity Tennis match put Cardigan up against New Hampton School for a Lakes Region showdown between these two top teams. The School gave the team, coached by Mr. D’Entremont and Mr. Rocha, a great send-off, and the team arrived at New Hampton early and warmed up well; there was no question that the team was ready to play. Quickly, the Cougars took a commanding lead in singles. Later, after fighting through some tough, close singles matches, Cardigan sealed the victory after singles, 5 matches to 1. The team also did well playing doubles, earning two out of three wins. This was a great team win all around, and it made for a terrific finish to an undefeated (10-0) Lakes Region season, thus sealing the Varsity Boys Lakes Region Championship Title for Cardigan!

CHARLES C. GATES INVENTION & INNOVATION COMPETITION Gates students are charged with identifying a specific problem in the real world and coming up with a “functioning innovation or invention to solve [that] problem.” Learning to prepare a presentation is just one of many facets of the Gates Program. Teamwork is another; and creativity and hands-on productivity are still two others. And needless to say, the list goes on (organization, planning, design, technology, etc!). Perhaps we should add “perseverance” too! Second place: Solar Shades Supreme by a seventh grade pair, Garrett Plekenpol and Patrick Roth.

First place was solo innovator Noah Drummond ’13, with the Easy Slide-on Trucks, a product so useful and marketable — and so ready to go to market, it also garnered the first patent nod for a Cardigan I student in the Gates program! (This means Noah will receive assistance in taking his "■'product through the patent process if he so :hooses!)

Fourth place: Advanced Recycling Trash Gan, by eighth graders Will Nearis, Paul Kim, and Andy Kim.

Third place: Kord Keeper by sixth graders Cedric Elkouh, Beckham Bayreuther, and Jonathan Schafer.
