A Message from the Head of School February 7, 2014 Dear Cardigan Family, This year represents the 25th Annual Cardigan Mountain School Auction, an important fundraising event for our school and a wonderful midwinter celebration for our community. I was a younger faculty member at Cardigan 25 years ago, and I remember that first auction. We worked hard to prepare for it, to educate our community about its purpose, and to pull off a successful event, which resulted in about $14,000 of Annual Fund support for Cardigan’s program. Over the years, our auction has evolved in thoughtful and significant ways. The Cardigan family continues to rally its support for our school through countless volunteer hours, creative auction items donated to the School, and enthusiastic and generous bids for some wonderful items and experiences—and all done in the spirit of abiding support for Cardigan’s faculty and especially for the boys we are entrusted to educate. The legacy of Cardigan’s annual auction bespeaks a commitment to education and to raising healthy young men. If my memory and our records are accurate, other than last year’s event, Cardigan’s auction has always coincided with our winter Parents’ Weekend. Indeed, it has been Cardigan’s parents who deserve most of the recognition and kudos for organizing, supporting in all imaginable ways, volunteering countless hours, and otherwise leading the charge. This year’s “Green and White Gala” is once again being led and supported by Cardigan parents, as well as alumni, trustees, and other friends of the School. The gratitude of the Cardigan community for the partnership we’ve shared with our parents over 25 years is enormous. I’d also like to thank many of my colleagues, especially members of our Development Office, for organizing and preparing this year’s event. Mary Ledoux, Douglas Lovell, and Kathryn Holland all deserve a special shout-out this year for their efforts. I’d also like to recognize my colleagues in Dining Services, Housekeeping, the Arts Department, Buildings and Grounds, and Communications, who have pitched in to make this truly a team effort. Your sons’ teachers also continue to support the auction in creative and meaningful ways, through their donation of personalized items and general good cheer. Over the years, a conservative estimate of total contributions to Cardigan as a result of this auction is in the $2,000,000 ballpark, which is impressive and which has been incredibly helpful in terms of supporting our mission and daily work. The goodwill, new friendships, and overall commitment to Cardigan that our auction has fostered is priceless. Thank you, one and all, on behalf of a grateful community. Sincerely,
David J. McCusker, Jr. ’80, P’09,’10 Head of School

Fund-a-Need (Formerly known as “Program Priorities”) Proceeds from this year’s Fund-a-Need segment will support three areas of school life: faculty professional development, financial aid, and classroom enhancements. I. Faculty Professional Development: Your contributions to faculty professional development will allow our teachers and coaches to continue pursuing opportunities away from campus and hone their crafts as educators. Last year, professional development funds were used to send Cardigan faculty members to conferences and workshops on subjects such as curriculum development, educational technology, and differentiated instruction. The funds also allowed our History Department to present at the New Hampshire Council for the Social Studies (NHCSS) Conference this year! II. Financial Aid: Your participation in this category will support our financial aid budget and help us keep the Cardigan Experience within reach of capable, motivated, deserving boys. III. Classroom Enhancements: In order to help our dedicated faculty members do what they do best, it is important that they are equipped with the appropriate tools for a 21st-century learning environment. Next year, we hope to pilot stand-up desks in several of our classrooms. Many schools have seen success with these revolutionary desks in the areas of writing mechanics and overall attentiveness in the classroom.

Sidney Crosby, currently the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL, was drafted first overall by the Penguins out of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. During his two-year major junior career with the Rimouski Oceanic, he earned back-to-back CHL Player of the Year awards and led his club to the 2005 Memorial Cup final. Nicknamed “The Next One,” he was one of the most highly regarded draft picks in hockey history, leading many to refer to the 2005 Draft Lottery as the “Sidney Crosby Sweepstakes.” In his first NHL season, Crosby finished sixth in league scoring with 102 points (39 goals, 63 assists) and was a runnerup for the Calder Memorial Trophy. By his second season, he led the NHL with 120 points (36 goals, 84 assists) to capture the Art Ross Trophy, becoming the youngest player and the only teenager to win a scoring title in any major North American sports league. That same season, Crosby also won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the Professional Hockey Writers Association’s choice for most valuable player and the Lester R. Pearson Award as the NHL Players Association’s choice for most outstanding player, becoming the seventh player in NHL history to earn all three awards in one year.
