The 2016 Blaze is dedicated to
Mr. and Mrs. McCusker "Mr. and Mrs. McCusker are always helping The Point in advancements. They make Cardigan what it is. They are always worried about us and I'm sure Cardigan will not be the same without them. I'm grateful for spending my senior year with them and all the school will miss them." —Emilio Antor "You do not need to ask for help, for them to help you. They are always the first people to help and live the Cardigan Way. They are a great example, and the Cardigan community is going to miss them." —Esteban Lopez They have made this place my home for the past three years. they have dedicated their life to this school. They have done so much for Cardigan and have made it a better place, we are so lucky to have them." —Andrew Noel Mr. and Mrs. McCusker have done so much for our family. They have given countless hours to Cardigan." —Austin Philie "Mr. and Mrs. McCusker have been a huge part of my Cardigan experience. They are the two happiest people I have ever met. Whenever I see Mrs. McCusker she always greets me with a smile and says, 'How are you doing?' Mr. McCusker is always cheerful and I love to go and talk to him when I get a chance. " —Anonymous

Dear Cardigan Family, We certainly feel nostalgic as we write our last yearbook letter to our extended Cardigan family members. And while in order to meet print deadlines we needed to write this in the fall of our final year here, it’s clear in looking through the pages that capture the start of this year just how many wonderful things our Cardigan family has been up to already. That’s no surprise, given the nature of this culture and community…given our Cardigan Way. In addition to all that represents the more visible types of recent progress (Clark-Morgan’s renovation, our new main driveway and rotary, the new beautiful—and beautified—winding pedestrian walkways, the formidable cougar statue, and the early stages of construction on the New Dorm), so many other equally important things continue to be in evidence, as well, and richly represent the way we think and care about our learning, our growth, our community, and the broader world. Just a small sampling of life here follows, but do remember these kinds of things when you are at home in the summer or as you move on to your next school—and we urge you to carry with you the values that lie at their foundation: dorm-family discussions about agreed-upon values in our living spaces; Socratic circles in our history classes that epitomize respectful discourse; playing catch on the Quad or enjoying some tennis or street hockey on the courts; our Fall Food Drive efforts; our hard-fought battles and, later, post-game handshakes with sports rivals who make us appreciate our athletic participation all the more; friendly Dorm Olympics competitions that include bonding (flags! cardboard boats!) and sometimes a focus on cleanliness and energy conservation; stacking wood for our Canaan neighbors; peer tutoring help and Big Brother conversations; singing in the Glee Club or performing with the Music Ensemble; pumpkin carving, the Sandwich Fair, and Mountain Day; powerful visits with senior citizens at nursing homes; spelling bees and dress-down days; carrying backpacks for our injured classmates and comforting our homesick hall mates; giving a tour to wide-eyed and enthusiastic prospective families; daring to write creatively or create an original film for schoolwide contests; Morning Break activities like chipping golf balls for CHaD and buying donuts from Mr. Clark; acting in a play for perhaps the first time—or working backstage to support it; taking care of terrarium creatures or engaging in an awe-inspiring, hands-on science experiment; helping one another reset the dining room after meals—while dancing to rockin’ music; participating in Chapel—as a “brother,” a “mentor,” or musical guest; and on and on and on. We have learned so much from our experiences—and certainly from one another. We have wrapped one another in a caring “green blanket” when struggles have become apparent. And we have been engaged in this “hero’s journey”—together. The two of us will most definitely miss all of this, and, of course, we will miss you boys, who bring us such joy and are the very reason we’ve delved into this fulfilling endeavor. We will miss your teachers (our colleagues), whom we greatly admire and about whose families we care deeply. We will miss the many staff members who keep the school running behind the scenes and deserve our utmost respect and gratitude. And we will miss The Point itself, a safe and simple little slice of heaven in an otherwise sometimes-complicated world. Thank you for being a part of our incredibly rewarding Cardigan experience. We encourage you to follow the Cardigan Way wherever you are next headed, and we wish you safe travels. Warmly and wistfully,
Mr. & Mrs. Dave McCusker ’80, P’09,’10 Job 5863 Year 2016 Page 003 (653078972) Master (626864109) 12/02/2015 1:55 PM

Signing the Register A tradition that was once carried out in the chapel during the annual Opening Ceremony, the signing of the School's official "register" has shifted in recent years to Registration Day, when the boys first arrive (or return) to The Point in September for the new academic year. For the senior leaders, who arrive a few days in advance of their schoolmates for leadership training, the register is signed at a special reception for them in Frieze House.

It seemed everyone reached the summit in time for the (approximately) 6:35 a.m. sunrise. During the sun’s slow ascent, we heard a few brief but inspirational remarks from Mr. McCusker, who applauded the boys for “doing something that’s really hard!”—and reminded them that making the decision to come to Cardigan Mountain School, in fact, meant they’d summoned the courage to do something that can also be really hard at times, and that is where good growth can come from: tackling hard things. He also pointed out the role of the Dawn Climb in symbolizing the beginning of the Cardigan experience for many among us, just as the Sunset Climb for our ninth graders at the end of the year serves to symbolize a bit of “closure” to their Cardigan journey.

Mountain Day
The sixth and seventh graders tackled Mount Kearsarge; the eighth graders faced the double-peaked challenge of the Welch Mountain & Dickey Mountain Loop; and our ninth-grade crew grappled with a double-peak test of their own— the Mount Morgan & Mount Percival Loop. The weather cooperated, and plenty of bonds were tightened as classmates ascended these mountains together on a glorious afternoon.

Sandwich Fair
It was a beautiful, warm(!), blue-sky kind of day. In the span of about four hours, the boys (among many other things) moseyed through the 4-H area looking at livestock, gobbled “fried everything,” played numerous carnival games, and braved the stomach-turning rides on hand.

Halloween Our Halloween breakfast proved especially interesting, as “Doc Brown” and “Marty McFly” (from the Back to the Future films) came squealing around our nearby wind turbine’s roundabout in their “DeLorean.” Yes, enthusiastic local Cardigan parent and former trustee Dan DeMars P’11,’18 and his son Ellis ’18 played those roles beautifully—as did their (Honda Element) DeLorean, which they had cleverly decorated for effect as well—and they then joined the rest of the community for breakfast. Later, when we entered the Commons for lunch, many of us sported costumes (or “creative wear”) and were happy to discover the building had been decked out in spooky fashion, and every delectable dish on the hot bar and at the soup station had some gory name associated with it. In addition, baskets of sugary treats could be found on each table for all to share, and a jar full of candy corn was up for grabs for any student guessing the correct number therein—or for coming the closest. (Believe it or not, the winner guessed 700, and that was exactly right!)

CHaD Hero Event Cardigan boasted the participation of at least 35 willing runners—students, faculty, and faculty kids alike, with each entry requiring a minimum fundraising amount. It was later announced that the Cardigan team had raised more than $3,000 (with an additional $90 coming in from the Mr. Hart-led “Chipping for CHaD” contests— as well as donations, thanks to the dog-walking efforts of the National Junior Honor Society), the total of which was doubled by the nonprofit organization Positive Tracks!

SkiHoliday(s)
Having provided numerous "head fakes" over the two weeks prior to Senior Ski Holiday, Mr. McCusker insisted during breakfast announcements that, once again, he would NOT be announcing Senior Ski Holiday that morning. Mr. Nevins did instead! The seniors bundled up and headed off for a day on the mountain at Waterville Valley Resort.

Per Cardigan tradition, a few weeks after Senior Ski Holiday, the entire school enjoyed a Ski Holiday together, and took to the slopes (Loon Mountain, Lincoln, N.H., to be exact) with skis, snowboards, or tubes; took in a bit of fresh mountain air by soaking in the outdoor hot tub at the resort’s spa; or played cards or board games in the lodge with friends.

Spiritual Life Despite a busy class and athletic schedule, we managed to find some time each Thursday for self-reflection, mindful pauses amid our "full and rich" lives, and an opportunity to hear thoughtful remarks from others in our community. The lessons learned in Chapel and the courage we needed to muster when addressing or performing for the community were things we couldn't have experienced anywhere else.

A word from Our School Leaders Cardigan Brothers,
Cardigan is a special place for all of us. We all appreciate it in many different ways. One of the best ways to enjoy your time here on The Point is to stop and take a moment. That moment might be to think about something you experienced here, to consider someone who made an impact on you, or just to take in all the beauty around you. It is really about the “Cardigan experience.” Like Mr. McCusker always says, “Be where you are when you are there.” Live in the moment. Experience this place. Be thankful for all of the opportunities, friendships, and fun you have had here. Wherever you go after Cardigan, one thing is for sure: You will always remember the traditions, events like Mountain Day, the sports and clubs, and all of the people you met. Don’t take it for granted. Remember it all. The great thing about memories is that they stay with you forever. Just like this place. Enjoy your time here since it will become a memory, just like everything we experience in life. So take pride in this school, in what it’s given to you and what you’ve given of yourself here because before you know it, your time here ends. See ya, Austin Philie Dear Brothers, Three and a half years ago on, a warm, September morning, I could not have imagined myself as a ninth grader. And, well, here I am now wondering how my time on The Point has gone by so fast. From shielding myself from a glass beaker explosion to home-staying a ravenous Japanese sixth grader, all of it has been a blast. So for those of you who will be returning to Cardigan next year, cherish every last minute of your time as it'’s going to go by very quickly. And remember, if you sleep in your class dress, you can wake up at 7:11 and still make it to breakfast. Trust me. Lights Out, 72 Jack Audett Job 5863 Year 2016 Page 072 (677918308) Master (626864108) 02/02/2016 10:40 AM
