A Message from our Head of School Ahoy, Cardigan Mateys! Welcome to the 27th Annual Cardigan Mountain School Auction, an important fundraising event for our school and a wonderful mid-winter celebration for our community. It truly requires a team effort to put together an event of this caliber, and I would like to thank many of my colleagues for organizing and preparing this year’s auction. A special tribute goes to our Development Office—especially to Kathryn Holland—for her incredible efforts in leading this event and the Auction Team. I’d also like to recognize my colleagues in Dining Services, Housekeeping, the Arts Department, Buildings and Grounds, and Communications. Furthermore, your sons’ teachers also support the Auction in creative and meaningful ways, through their donations of personalized items and experiences. And, of course, this event would not be possible without our Cardigan family. The support provided for our school through auction donations (of all kinds!), countless volunteer hours, and enthusiastic bids for some wonderful items and experiences is second to none. Most important, it is all done in the spirit of providing support for Cardigan’s faculty and students. Thank you for all that you do to make this festive evening a success. Since the first Cardigan Auction 27 years ago, funds raised through this event conservatively total over $2,400,000—an impressive amount, which has been a tremendous help in the advancement of our mission and daily work. That said, the goodwill, new friendships, and overall commitment to Cardigan that our auction has fostered over the years is priceless. Thank you, one and all, for being here with us. I hope you enjoy your weekend and have a great time at the Auction. As they say, be sure to “bid early and bid often”! Sincerely,

David J. McCusker, Jr. ’80, P’09,’10 Head of School

17 Week on the Maine Waterfront in Blue Hill, Maine This beautiful summer home in Blue Hill, Maine, is 45 minutes from Acadia National Park and perfect for 8–10 guests. Gruesome Gables was built as a summer cottage in 1885. From the moment you walk up the wide steps, you will feel the crisp air and whispering pines rejuvenate your spirit as you step back in time. Gather friends and family around the huge dining room table, light some candles, and throw on some Louis Armstrong. Linger over dinner, and then retire to the porch, perhaps with a blanket to ward off the slight chill; then, reluctantly, fall asleep to the calls of loons on the bay. Wake up and take a bike to explore the small winding roads, or kayak the coves and harbor. Bring your own boat and take advantage of a floating dock and mooring ball capable of holding a 50-foot sailboat. If it’s foggy, get a copy of Robert McCloskey’s Time of Wonder from the library, curl up with your children on a couch, and get a true sense of the place that has attracted families for generations. Climb to the top of Blue Hill Mountain, take a day trip to Acadia National Park, steam lobsters, read a book, do a trip with the Maine Environmental Research Institute, visit the Wooden Boat School, or explore the antique shops of Stonington and Deer Isle—there is as much or as little as a person could want to fill a day. Available for the week of September 10–17 or September 17–24, 2016.
