Dear Cardigan Community, Thoughts of fall conjures images of the splendid foliage colors, football, apples, fairs, pumpkins, Halloween, mountain hikes, crisp mornings, and glorious afternoons. It also means it’s time for Cardigan’s 29th Annual Auction! This event is so much fun for our entire community and is also an integral component of our fundraising program. The funds raised through the Auction support every element of Cardigan’s program. The boys are at the heart of all that happens here on The Point and being able to provide them with a compelling educational experience is what we strive for each and every day. This evening would not be possible without the efforts of so many of our community members both on and off campus. The donations from parents, trustees, alumni, faculty and staff, and local businesses show just how generous the Cardigan family is. A special thank you to everyone who sponsored the Auction or donated an item. I would also like to thank my colleagues in the Development Office for all of their hard work in organizing this special event, especially Auction Director Kathryn Holland for her incredible efforts leading this event and the Auction Team. I would be remiss not to also recognize the hard work of my colleagues in Dining Services, Housekeeping, Buildings and Grounds, and Communications. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our parent volunteers that have helped to transform the Cardigan Commons into a venue worthy of a five-star review. Furthermore, my thanks go out to your sons’ teachers who support the Auction in creative and meaningful ways, through their donations of personalized items and experiences. Thank you one and all for joining us. The good will, new friendships, and overall commitment to Cardigan that our Auction has fostered is priceless. I hope you enjoy your weekend and have a great time at the Auction. Remember, every bid supports our boys! With gratitude,
Christopher D. Day P’12,’13 Head of School

Fund-a-Need
Proceeds from this year’s Fund-a-Need segment will support the following aspects of school life:
Expansion of the Living Laboratory The Science Department is home to the Living Laboratory (located in the hallway of Bronfman) and students are responsible for the care of the animals who live there. The laboratory is home to over 20 creatures including turtles, a tarantula, a bearded dragon, fire-bellied toads, snakes, geckos, and a host of other critters. The department is currently redesigning the terrariums for each animal to better simulate their natural habitat. In addition, the renovated space will include numerous hands-on activities showing different scientific principles and theories in action to enhance the students’ classroom experiences.
Digital Arts Lab With the addition of a brand new digital arts lab this fall, Cardigan’s studio arts program is evolving to offer students the opportunity to learn the techniques of digital media, along with traditional art methods. The arts program now includes eight iMacs (with the hopes of two more to come!) that allow students to try their hand at Photoshop, InDesign, and other digital art mediums. This will allow students to incorporate photography, video, and graphic design into their projects. The program is being piloted to ninth graders this year with the hopes of expanding offering to underclassmen.

Security Safes for Dorm Rooms Cardigan is purchasing 70 student safes this year, the first step in our plan to equip every dorm room with a personal security safe for each student. This will allow the boys to have a secure location to store personal items and spending money.
Enhanced Student Life Experiences Help Cardigan support our residential life program and student experiences. Funds will support off-campus outings with advisors, presentations from special guest speakers, dorm gatherings, and fun oncampus activities.
First Aid Kits and Automated Defibrillators (AEDs) We take safely seriously at Cardigan. Each dorm and activity vehicle is equipped with a first aid kit that is kept well stocked with first aid and emergency response supplies. Additionally, we are adding an AED outside the Wakely Fitness Room this year, bringing our campus total to seven.
Activity Vehicles (AVs) Two new AVs are being added to Cardigan’s fleet of student transportation vehicles bringing the total to eight vehicles. The AVs allow faculty members to take the boys off campus for athletic competitions, field trips, weekend activities, and special events.

Bauer Supreme TotalOne MX3 Composite Stick, Right-Hand
The TotalOne MX3 Stick is Bauer’s latest top-end model for the Supreme stick lineup. New for this year is the Power Sense 2 Blade Core. Bauer was able to improve the original version by fusing the blade core to Bauer’s TeXtreme Carbon. This integration of the outer and inner blade eliminates excess glues and materials, significantly reducing the weight. This new blade is designed to be softer for better touch on shots and passes. The softer blade also allows the puck to be cradled longer on powerful snapshots, ensuring maximum energy is transferred from stick to puck. Bauer continues to utilize AEROFOAM 3 in the heel of the blade, providing stability and strength to the core while improving balance. The MX3 Stick uses the well-known amplified mid-kick point flex profile that helps load maximum power on slap shots and onetimers. Also, returning from previous models is the Monocomp technology, Bauer’s one-piece stick molding process that creates more consistency and better overall balance.

A fluid strength defines the medium Nowlan Bowl, a creation taking full advantage of Simon Pearce’s artisans’ talents and shining with the purity of their glass. A great deal of glass goes into this bowl–even more than the generous amount they usually use—and then it’s hand-sculpted with an asymmetrical rim inspired by the molding effects of water on stone. Softly shaped, silkysmooth, and with fantastic light refraction, the medium Nowlan Bowl is a modernist work of art for your home.

“Outdoor Classroom” Framed Painting
This painting was inspired by the following memory. “Last spring, I was walking through campus one morning and couldn’t help but notice how bright the colors were—the sky, a brilliant, Disney blue with a swirl of white puffy clouds. The grass was at its spring peak, almost too green to be true. Off in the distance, Cardigan Mountain, our school namesake, stood majestically. “What a place to learn,” I marveled. As I rounded the corner, an English class was in the midst of a lively discussion. I tried to capture the moment with a few photographs and then the boys ran off for their next class. The Adirondack chairs, now vacant, stood awaiting the next teacher and students who couldn’t resist the lure of the Outdoor Classroom. I took another picture and sent it to my mother.”

Starbucks Coffee and Tumbler
This is a one-pound bag of Starbucks Gold Coast Blend coffee. Starbucks Gold Coast Blend is a serious cup of coffee. Big. Bold. Syrupy, complex, and refined. A coffee that means Chicago to Starbucks. When Starbucks opened their first store in 1987, they wanted to introduce a blend that would honor the city, and this is it. Their master coffee blenders brought together the heft of beans from Latin America and Indonesia with a bit of roasty sweetness from their dark Italian Roast. Creating a taste every bit as sophisticated as the neighborhood for which it’s named. To help keep this wonderful coffee warm, included is a stainless steel Starbucks tumbler.

Korean Tea Set
This tea set was handcrafted by a Korean artist. This is an elegant celadon teapot with a set of matching cups. Both the teapot and the cups are decorated with a pattern of clouds and inlaid cranes, which symbolize immortality. Korean celadon pottery was well known throughout history, and this crane pattern is the most famous design for Korean celadon. All of the components of this tea set are thick-walled, so the set is slightly heavy, setting it apart from others.

Bottle of Dom Perignon Vintage 1996
On the palate, this is a paradoxical vintage where concentration and balance rival each other. The structure asserts itself by being well-defined. Concentrated, although momentarily restrained, this vintage opens up dramatically, leaving a striking and enduring richness. On the nose, you will get white peach, candied lemons, vanilla, praline, and white pepper. The 1996 harvest year was full of contrasts and the summer changeable, with the wetter periods never quite making up for the earlier hydric deficit. Eventually, in the month before grape-picking, it was as much the spells of hot weather as the influence of north-easterly winds that led to the original maturity of the vintage.
