Fir st , I want to give a belated welcome to our new boys and masters. They have all been welcomed by me before, but never in print ... Because we are growing so rapidly, we have a great man y new boys, 24 in fact, with 37 "old boys". This puts a heavy on these older boys . It is up to them to show thes e new, younger boys, by their actions and teachings, what Cardigan stands for, what it means to us who are still here and to the boys who have gone to higher schools. Cardigan means honesty, fair play, comradeship, a helping hand - - sleep-outs, cookouts, climbs up Cardigan Mountain -- classes, studying . dances, parties, the traditional Christmas Pageant, Clancy's cooking, and through and through it all. again and again, that fair play betwe e n boys and masters , boys and boys - - the spirit of Cardigan. We are, as I have said, growing rapidly. You, here, are the first class to use the new school house. You will watch the new building go up, some of you will be here to occupy the new dormitories and to use the new dining hall, gymnasium, and so on. In years to come you will look back with pride and affection to your Cardigan. It is up to us all, new and old, to preserve the Cardigan spirit, and to make this the best year yet .

MEET MR . HEFLER Mr Hefler is one of the new masters at Cardigan . He teaches Geography, Spanish and English . Also, Mr . Hefler has been teaching Jose and Gustave Lira , two boys from Venezualia, the English language ... Mr. Hefler has spent most of his life in Annapolis, Maryland, and he is a graduate of the University of Maine . Mr, Hefler likes New England, perhaps partly because his parents are from B o ston. H e would like to stay with us, prefering teaching to soldiering . This is Mr. Hefler's first yea r of teaching.

SKI SLOPE Several boys have assisted Mr. Stowe in beginning a new ski trail for the more advanced skiers . It is located near the present slope on some recently purchased land. The boys have cleared the slope of brush. Work is progressing rapidly, due to the fact that a Canaanite lent Mr. Stowe a power saw. It is hoped that the new trail will be finished before snow falls. Kim Clement '55

THE NEW SCHOOL BUS Cardigan recently purchased a school bus from Roger's Garage in Hanover. Overhauling, painting and other miscellaneous items needed attention before the bus could arrive at school. TRIP TO THE FISH HATCHERY

THE HALLOWEEN DANCE

One day in late October many of us went to the Morse Museum in Warren. The museum was closed, so Mr. Morgan took us to the nearby fish hatchery. While we were there we saw the fish fed liver and cornmeal. What amused us most were the large trout in the streams outside the hatchery. They jumped and darted about in surprising numbers ... The boys went home as satisfied as if they had seen the mu-
