NOTES FROM CARDIGAN Cardiga~ Mountain School Canaan, New Hampshir e 03741
January 1979
Issue No . 9 Cardigan students again this year took part in the School's Christmas pageant held on Wednesday , December 13 in the Chapel . The Pageant featured a living creche with student actors portraying characters in the story of the birth of Christ. Chip Haskell portrayed a nModern Shepherd" who wrestles with questions which any one of us (as "modern shepherds" ) might ask about Christmas and our relationship with God . Narrators Chuck Lawrence and Tom Patterson reminded us of the New Testament story through scripture and poetry. The music was provided by the CMS chorus , featuring soloists Larry Davis , Paul Brierre , and Jeff Aquilla , singing favorite carols and anthems that complimented the dramatic pantomime of the ancient story. The organist again this year and choir director was Nr. Harold Finkbeiner of CMS and production was under the direction of the Reverend Harry Mahoney, the School's Chaplain . After a long Christmas vacation, students returned to find : winter in all its glory at Ca rdigan !fountain School, The temgerature and precipitation has been r ather zigzag with lows hitting 22 below 0 , and highs raising to 12° above O - all within 24 hours (Jan. 12 and 13). It seems that it rains after each snow and then the weather becomes extremely cold ..• which has been perfect for setting a solid bas~ foundation at our two ski slopes, Clancy and the Pinnacle . The yo yo weather conditions have also been helpful to our 7-8 km of touring trails. Winter sports at Cardigan are heavily underway . Although it is still early in the season , Coach Heath states that several Nordic s kiers (many of whom never raced competitively before) have achieved out stand ing improvements since their first race including Eric Barrett , Bob Bruni , and Harrison Ruffin. Josiah Miles and David Alexander are this year's Nordic Team Captains. Josiah Miles and Bob Kenney raced last week in the i1ew Hampshire Jr. Nordic Championships. The Alpine Ski Team has placed 3rd thus far in the Lakes Region League , which includes all of the New Hampshire Private Schools (nine teams) . Paul Brierre , Tim Frost 9 Anthony Traad , and Will Willauer have placed high in the first three races of the season. The Var sity Bas ke t ball Team has a 2-2 record . Coach Madar states that it is -a " supportive team that has improved with each game" . Madar goes on to say that the CMS team is short compared to other varsity basketball teams, but their height is overcome by their desire to win. (P . S. anyone with a 6 1 611 son , CMS age , please contact Mike Hadar immediately ! ) . Reserve Basketball Captains are Eric Lake and John Kohn. Cur tis Kise has shown excellent performance as center. The team may so far be
off to a slow start, but Coach Likshis says he's looking forward to a good season. Varsity Hockey has a thus far undefeated season. Big wins over New Hampton, KUA, and Eaglebrook are included in their 8-0 record. Chris _King is the Captain of this year's Varsity Hockey team, and Greg Heidenreich and Jon Leonard are alternate captains. Reserve Hockey captains (and reportedly the team's most productive members) are Billy Earthman and Cass Conkling. Mike Stevens and Chuck Lawrence have done an excellent job with defense. The sixth grade line, including Ian George, Greg Whitcomb and Thomas Taliadoros, show promise for the future. Third Team Hockey is basically described as a 11 recreational hockey program" designed to learn the fundamentals of the game. Mr. Larry Goldthwait (an Olympic Speed Skater) is the instructor, working with Mr. Campana, the Third Team Hockey coach. The team plays i:pee wee" teams in and around Grafton County. They will play 5 to 7 games, and will do their best to win although this is not their major goal. During the month of January, weekends have been special times at Cardigan. Saturday afternoons and Sundays are free to students to participate in town trips, alpine skiing at Clancy, nordic skiing, and skating in the School's hockey arena. Every Saturday evening a movie is shown in Hinman Auditorium. Also activities such as swimming at the Dartmouth pool, evening concerts at the Hanover Civic Center, or perhaps a Harvard/Dartmouth hockey game are often available for students to attend. Ski trips have taken place each Sunday (weather permitting) to nearby ski areas. Cardigan Xountain students have skied at Waterville Valley (twice) and Pat's Peak since their return from Christmas vacation. Chapel is held in the evenings so that students and faculty can take advantage of a complete day of activities from early morning until dinner, Sunday evening is no longer a requir.ed study hall after Chapel. Now students are able to participate in a variety of programs such as Language Department movies, Mr. Farrell's bicycle trip through Italy and Switzerland, and Reverend Mahoney's 11emory Seminar. Those students that fell behind in their studies the previous week are free to seek help during the evening from their teachers. For those not participating in programs, Sunday evening is a quiet time for reading, sleeping, or catching up on homework. Parent's Weekend is just around the corner (Feb. 2-4) and we'd like to invite you once again to participate. The busy schedule includes ski meets, hockey and basketball games, a play, a musical production ; and recreational skiing, skating, and basketball offered to all student and their families. A block of time is reserved on Saturday morning specifically for parent-student-teacher conferences. We hope to see you then.
