Editor’s Note “Try something new.” It’s an oft-spoken mantra here at Cardigan Summer Session, and one that, as a first year faculty member, I feel I’m uniquely suited to discuss. When the summer session began, almost every aspect of life at Cardigan was new to me, including leading a group of eager and talented young staffers as we designed the summer yearbook. We were fortunate at Chronicle to have several returning members, but most of the staff were, like me, in unfamiliar territory. It is that choice to try something new which is the heart of the Cardigan message, and it’s also the focus of this year’s Chronicle. The following pages follow the efforts of Cardigan students to live out the program mantra. These students pushed themselves to try sports that they had never heard of, to take classes that challenged them, and to study skills that they never thought they would enjoy. As a direct result of those choices, some students discovered new passions and interests. And even if they decided that those activities weren’t of interest to them, the experiences asked the students to grow in self-knowledge and maturity. This year’s Chronicle celebrates the students’ choices to challenge themselves. Choosing the unfamiliar introduces the possibility of failure, but it’s precisely that risk that makes the choice worthwhile. It challenges you to remain active and engaged with the world around you, to avoid complacency, and to put faith in yourself and your abilities. Cardigan’s mantra to “Try something new” asks you to trust that you have more potential than even you may realize. I hope that the Cardigan Summer Session students are proud of their choices. I’m certainly proud of the choices of the Chronicle staff, and I’m grateful to have spent the summer in a place that challenges its residents to be open-minded, to discover new interests, and to return home as stronger, more well-rounded, and richer versions of themselves. — Allison Keene, Editor

Dedication This issue of Chronicle is dedicated to Devin Clifford, the director of summer programs, whose efforts kept the students and staff at Cardigan happy and healthy this summer. To quote one student’s thank you letter to Mr. Clifford, “Thank you for making summer session!” — Chronicle Staff
