Dear Alumnae/i and Friends,

What an exciting and memorable year at the College of Mount Saint Vincent!

Our Annual Fund has, yet again, reached a record-setting total, we reinstated our signature fundraising event, the Scholarship Tribute Dinner, and we finally had the opportunity to gather to dedicate Corazon C. Aquino ’53 Hall. We have many reasons to celebrate! Perhaps what is more impressive is that we achieved even more—we maintained traditional undergraduate enrollment in the face of significant market challenges and expanded partner and graduate enrollments, including the first cohort of students in the Physician Assistant program, developed a premier music conservatory for our students and community, enhanced of our athletic field, and launched the Center for Leadership—all while we commemorate our especially momentous 175th Anniversary.

Though not one of these achievements was designed to serve as a celebratory milestone, we are fortunate and exceptionally proud of the work that has enabled our recent successes. Like every initiative undertaken at Mount Saint Vincent, these efforts have been informed by deep understanding of, and fidelity to, the mission entrusted to the institution by the Sisters of Charity of New York dating back to 1847. I am immensely proud to share this robust Annual Report with you, filled with stories that further illuminate the ways in which we continue to live our commitment to the Mount’s mission and students still today.

The greatest success, by far, is that the College’s 175th Anniversary is a time of affirmation of mission, rather than rediscovery or realignment—and it is due in large part to you, our community of alumnae, alumni, and friends. My colleagues and I are blessed to be stewards. It is a gift to devote our talents, determination, and sense of purpose to serving Mount Saint Vincent students, community, and mission. We build on the contributions made by members of the faculty, staff, and administration who came before us and are honored to carry and enrich this legacy into the future. We appreciate your constant companionship on this journey. The understanding and devotion that is shared among members of the Mount community and passed from generation to generation of graduates ensures the institution’s mission and values will sustain for many years to come. Thank for your devotion to this institution, your allegiance to its mission, and your generous support of our students and the academically excellent programs and experiences that meet and serve our learners when, where, and how they need us. With grateful appreciation for the first 175 years, and joyful optimism for the next at the Right Place on the River.

The Right Place—Anywhere

Education will always be at the center of the Mount’s mission. It has been since our founding in 1847.

The Sisters of Charity, our foundresses, have never shied away from bringing quality education to those on the margins. 175 years later, the College is proud to carry on the Congregation’s tradition of providing equal access to academics—extending the audacious work of the Sisters to bring transformative education to learners from all corners of the Bronx and beyond.

Mount students are remarkable. They come to the College to study, grow, and develop both within and beyond the classroom. Nearly 50% of our traditional undergraduate population is eligible for Federal Pell Grants—meaning their median household income falls within the percentage of greatest need among degreeseeking students in the country. The College has also been identified by the U.S. Department of Education as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), meaning at least 25% of the total enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students identify as Hispanic or Latinx. Serving the underserved has always been something the College has done remarkably well, but a new demographic cliff looms overhead.

Colleges and universities around the nation are facing an impending demographic cliff that will reshape the practice of higher education. The cliff—a direct result of the significant decline in U.S. birthrate following

the 2007 recession—will rewrite the definition of the “traditional” college student as declining enrollment trends will impact every area of campus life. Although the cliff is not projected to begin until 2025, many schools have already felt the effects of decreased enrollments as a result of the pandemic.

Reflects gifts to all funds and projects received from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022. † Indicates deceased.

The Mount, however, has been challenging those trends long before this demographic cliff was even defined.

In 1972, the College began the Continuing Education Program in an effort to bring the same quality Mount Saint Vincent education to non-traditional students. The program targeted adult learners who started college, but—for a variety of reasons— did not earn a degree, as well as those adults who did not enroll in college immediately following graduation from high school. The program was groundbreaking for its time, as there were few other schools in the area— and in the nation, at large—offering undergraduate coursework to adult learners.

The Continuing Education Program ran successfully for almost two decades before becoming the Office of Adult Education in 1989. The program remained largely the same, but offerings to adult learners broadened after the College’s charter was amended in 1988 to allow for the conferring of master’s degrees. In 2005, the Office expanded yet again to form the School of Professional and Graduate Studies—which continues to successfully operate today.

But, with passing decades comes new challenges—including finding ways to make completing an undergraduate degree or starting a graduate degree not only attractive, but attainable for non-traditional groups of learners. It all connects back to the Mount’s history of serving the traditionally underserved and, as President Susan R. Burns so firmly believes: “meeting learners when and where they need us.”

The College has made an intentional transition to online education—our first delve into non-pandemic related emergency use of an alternative learning modality—for a select few undergraduate and graduate programs. It’s yet another example of how the Mount is advancing its commitment to expanding access to higher education for learners with a variety of needs.

“When researching new online offerings for graduate and degreecompletion programs, we have to

look at what’s sustainable, what’s appealing,” said Cristobal Stewart, Dean of the School of Professional and Graduate Studies. “Our undergraduate programs are still at the foundation of the College’s mission. But by diversifying the modalities in which we offer coursework for adult learners— including developing more hybrid and online course options—we’re making earning a degree both accessible and attainable for thousands more students.”

Two of the College’s existing graduate programs—the M.S. in education and accelerated B.S. in nursing—will now offer partially- and fully-online courses for graduate students to enroll and complete degrees in under three years, saving them time and money. Additionally, the Mount will soon offer online degree-completion courses for a B.A. in psychology and a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies. This is all made possible through new collaborations with two leaders in online program management: Academic Partnerships (AP) and Orbis Education.

The M.S. in education coursework, as well as classes for the degreecompletion undergraduate programs, will be offered through fully-online asynchronous courses. The accelerated nursing program has launched 16 credits of didactic coursework online— with the goal of having all 61 credits in an online format in the near future.

Classes are developed by Mount faculty members—through consultation by AP and Orbis curriculum designers— with an emphasis on how to best offer course material to students through the online modality.

Adult learners differ from traditionalaged undergraduate students in that they need certain conveniences and flexibilities in order to reach success in their programs. Adult learners— typically—face greater demands of their time compared to students in their late teens and early twenties. Many work full- or part-time jobs, attend to families, or hold other commitments that prevent them from participating in standard in-seat programs.

All of the College’s online programs will offer multiple start dates per

year—up to six—and shorter semesters, providing scheduling fluidity. Studies have found that this population of students is more likely to select a program based on convenience of start dates, course frequency, and flexibility of content delivery. As a result, certain foundational and prerequisite courses will be offered each term.

And while these online programs are expanding access to transformative education for learners both near and far, traditional in-seat classes will still be offered at the College’s Riverdale campus—extending paths to graduation for dedicated students eager to earn their degrees.

“Our focus continues to lie in the needs of the students,” remarked Lynne Bongiovanni, Ph.D., Provost and Dean of the College. “The modality of content delivery is just a tool. As a leader in higher education, the Mount must remain committed to flexibility and provide greater time management opportunities for typically underserved groups of learners.”

This is only the beginning. By moving some of the College’s existing programs online, the Mount is doing its part to help address some of the most pressing needs of our country’s job market: shortages in teaching and nursing. But, by taking a small first step, the Mount is opening doors for the transition of more existing programs— and the development of new ones—to the online format in the near future.

With the wisdom and traditions of the Sisters of Charity to guide us, Mount Saint Vincent is challenging the market to bring transformational learning opportunities to students from all backgrounds—traditional and non-traditional alike. Remaining abreast of current trends in higher education, the College will continue to be well prepared to meet enrollment obstacles—researching best practices, developing new ways to deliver programs, and listening to the needs of each and every student.

After all, celebrating 175 years of authentically inclusive education is no small accomplishment. And the College is ready and eager to adapt and expand to be a part of the next 175 and beyond.

Making Music at the Mount

hen Founders Hall—originally the Administration Building—first opened its doors in 1859, the romantic keys of a piano or hum from the strings of a violin could often be heard dancing down from the third floor. What is now Humanities Hall in the section of Founders Hall called the Academy—named in honor of the College’s roots as an institution— originally served as the Music Hall. Academy students could often be found practicing choral pieces, learning a new instrument, or preparing for performances. However, as the Academy expanded into the College and academics flourished, the space was transformed into advising offices for faculty members and the musical notes faded into a faint decrescendo down the hall.

But, at last, the College is proud to announce that the hills—of Riverdale— are alive again with the sound of music.

Following the announcement of the closing of Concordia College New York in nearby Bronxville in early 2021, the Concordia Conservatory—a center for music education offering programs for musicians of all ages and experiences— began to operate as an independent organization. Mount Saint Vincent recognized the value of the Concordia Conservatory in serving both college students and eager musicians from the local community, and having a conservatory of our own would afford us the opportunity to help students find enriching ways to navigate their individual musical journeys. Under President Susan R. Burns’ leadership, the Mount was inspired to form its own destination for music education in Riverdale and the CMSV Conservatory had its quiet launch over this past year.

“Founding the CMSV Conservatory will only further enrich arts offerings as part of the College’s robust liberal arts curriculum,” said Dr. Burns, a lifelong musician herself. “Additionally, we can now offer local community members

a new outlet to get to know the Right Place on the River and engage with the Mount through music lessons and performances.”

Keith Kreindler, previously the Program Coordinator at the Concordia Conservatory, joined the Mount last Summer with the task of launching the CMSV Conservatory as its founding director. Over the past year, Keith has spearheaded the development and growth of the CMSV Conservatory and is supported by approximately 20 talented faculty members who deliver music instruction to enthusiastic students from the Mount’s campus and beyond.

“As we establish the Conservatory, our goal is to elevate Mount Saint Vincent into a destination for students interested in musical growth, as well as establish the College as a destination for arts education and programming for the entire Riverdale community,” described Keith.

Music has, yet again, filled the halls and hearts of those at the Mount.

The CMSV Conservatory can be found in freshly revitalized space on the first floor of Marillac Hall, overlooking the cliffs of the Palisades and the rolling Hudson River. Housed in such a historic location, creativity flows from each studio as inspiration is drawn from views of the castle just across the parking lot. There’s no better place to make music at the Mount.

Students of all ages, all learning styles, and all experiences are welcome to join the CMSV Conservatory—and not just those taking classes at the Mount. The Conservatory is open to all, from students to staff members to members of the local Riverdale community. Currently, Conservatory students are able to engage in private lessons with instructors in either voice or a wide array of instruments and CMSV students are even able to gain transcript credits. In the near future, the Conservatory hopes to offer small ensemble groups and a concert series.

“Mount community members have already joined the CMSV Community Choir—under the direction of George Heath—where students, staff members, Sisters, and members of the local community meet Monday evenings and have fun preparing the musical enrichment they bring to campus,” said Keith. “The Choir has performed at several campus events, including at last May’s Commencement exercises and this year’s Reunion and Homecoming Weekend.”

Still not fully convinced to get involved with the CMSV Conservatory? Mount Saint Vincent community members and their immediate family can receive an additional 40% tuition discount on lessons.

Just take it from Kristine Strutz ’23, one of the motivated musicians studying voice this semester. After attending a CMSV Conservatory recital for a friend last year, Kristine knew she wanted explore how the Conservatory could help her define and refine her own musical talents. Following a conversation with Keith, she signed up for lessons and was paired with a vocal coach.

“I’ve always been passionate about music,” said Kristine. “I performed in multiple choirs from elementary school through high school. Coming to the Mount, I knew academics would be my main focus—but I could still hear faint music notes playing in the back of my head. Once I learned of the CMSV Conservatory, those notes rang out into the greatest forte and I knew it was something I wanted to take part in.”

Kristine is spending an hour each week of this semester practicing her vocal talent with faculty members in the Conservatory, but that’s not where her musical involvement ends. She serves as co-president of WORDS, a performing arts club on campus. WORDS features performances from both contemporary dance and vocal artists. She’s hopeful WORDS and the Conservatory will be able to collaborate to bring musical programming to her peers in the near future.

Under Keith’s direction, the Conservatory will soon offer interdisciplinary courses in the visual and performing arts—integrating Conservatory faculty members with those in the Division of Communication, Art, and Media. It’s yet another way the Mount is continuing to grow its academic offerings.

“The Mount serves such a diverse population of students—many come from school districts where music education has all but disappeared,” Keith explained. “By offering arts education through the Conservatory— from performance training and opportunities to digital and acoustic composition—the Mount is giving traditionally underserved students an outlet to balance the rigors of higher education through transformative artistic expression.”

And while the Conservatory is currently recruiting musicians of all talent levels interested in making music from around the Riverdale community, the hope is for the Conservatory to eventually bring music into the streets and venues of the northwest Bronx through performances at local gatherings and events.

The launch of the CMSV Conservatory is certainly major news and an exciting endeavor for musicians to grow, create, and perform right here in the Bronx. While the programs continue to pick up tempo and new ensembles are formed, the Conservatory is eager to bring together Mount students, staff, alums, and community members alike to cheer for the white and the gold in perfect harmony.

Scholarship Tribute Dinner

onday, May 2, 2022 was a momentous day in the history of the College of Mount Saint Vincent: the annual Scholarship Tribute Dinner returned after having been postponed (not once, but twice!) as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The event was held at Cipriani 25 Broadway and welcomed hundreds of eager donors, local leaders in business, campus constituents, students, Sisters of Charity, and alumnae/i.

A resounding success, the College raised nearly $700,000 in support of student scholarships—including substantial contributions to the College’s first ever text-to-pledge campaign, which lit up the screen throughout the evening as members of the community joined in celebrating the third-most successful Scholarship Tribute Dinner in Mount history.

For President Susan R. Burns, Ph.D., the evening was particularly joyful as it marked the first Scholarship Tribute Dinner held during her presidency. She, alongside all guests in the audience, soaked it all in.

“I am thrilled and am inspired by each and every one of you—though I cannot believe that this is only my first Scholarship Tribute Dinner, and that we’re finally able to host the event again after the pandemic sidelined us,” said Dr. Burns. “I hope tonight, as you meet our students and many of our alums, that you enjoy learning more about why the College of Mount Saint Vincent will remain the right place for every student—the right place for our graduates, who are proud to be Mount Made; the right place for the cultivation of ethical servant leaders who are devoted to the common good; and the right place for defining and achieving dreams, with the greatest opportunities to cultivate independent thinkers in and outside the classroom. We’re the Right Place on the River for a reason.”

The event was headlined by Susan Chiaviello DiDonato ’82, Gerald DiDonato ’83, Ph.D., and Grace Vandecruze, who were each selected as honorees. Susan and Gerald, both alumni (and husband and wife!), serve as a Senior Vice President for WPP and a Senior Director at Bristol Myers Squibb, respectively, and Grace is the Founder and Managing Director of Grace Global Capital, LLC.

And even with such influential industry leaders, it was (of course) our talented and deserving students who stole the show.

Gesselle Sanchez and Diamond Martin—both members of the Class of 2022—each took the stage to share powerful and inspiring words which didn’t just highlight why they chose the Mount, but also what they’ve learned from their experiences.

Both students received resounding applause—and a standing ovation— from the packed room of guests. We are immensely proud of Gesselle and Diamond, as well as all of our students and graduates at the College. The event welcomed 31 students, who represent the more than 1,400 undergraduates who received scholarships this academic year— cumulatively valued in excess of $37 million in institutional aid.

And of the $670,760 raised at the gala, every single dollar goes directly to student scholarships and aid, giving all students—regardless of family or financial means—yet another avenue to call the Right Place on the River home.

Expanding the Mount’s Footprint in the Health Professions

he College of Mount Saint Vincent enjoys a well-deserved reputation for offering exceptional programs in the health sciences, specifically in nursing education. The Mount first began training nurses nearly 80 years ago, through an innovative partnership with Saint Vincent’s Hospital that allowed students to simultaneously earn a bachelor’s degree and the RN certification. The College continued to advance the standards of nursing education through the implementation of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree nearly 50 years ago—and established a master’s degree in nursing more than 30 years ago. In the recently completed academic year, the College’s traditional undergraduate, second degree accelerated nursing, and graduate nursing degree leading to certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) collectively served 915 aspiring healthcare professionals.

The importance of these programs cannot be overstated. Even before the pandemic, job growth in healthcare was increasing at a higher rate than any other employment sector. From 2006-2016, the field grew 20%— adding 2.8 million jobs—while all other sectors grew at a much lower rate of 3%. The need for healthcare professionals is expected to outpace other industries in the current decade as well. Experts predict that the U.S. will need 1.2 million new registered nurses by 2030 to meet current demand, and advanced practice nurses—like FNPs—will be increasingly necessary to address shortages in primary care providers.

Recognizing these trends and building on its curricular strength, this Fall the College enrolled the first cohort of students in its Master of Science in Physician Assistant (PA) Studies Program. Like nurses, demand for qualified physician assistants is high, with an expected growth rate of 31% by 2030.

The PA Program aims to educate individuals who aspire to achieve a higher level of medical knowledge in order to return to their communities and deliver quality medical care to all individuals across a culturally and socioeconomic diverse patient population. With an emphasis on community health, clinical research, health services, policy research, and medical education, the PA Program will create a tangible pathway to support key areas of need within our borough, the region, and beyond, while cultivating professionals prepared to serve any and all healthcare needs. The program will offer guidance to all students so as to fully develop the professional maturity necessary to achieve the highest levels of excellence and leadership in their professions, while becoming leaders within their communities.

Graduates of the Master of Science in Nursing/FNP and Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies will be in high demand and play a critical role in meeting the healthcare needs of communities across New York City, the State, and the nation. PAs and FNPs both provide direct patient care, working under the auspices of a physician, but—due to their advanced training— make independent diagnoses and treatment plans. PAs

are trained by the medical model, which is disease centered; PAs rely on analysis of anatomical and physiological needs to diagnose patients and achieve optimal patient outcomes. FNPs are trained by the nursing model, which is patient centered; their approach is holistic, meaning they consider the patient’s mental, physical, and emotional needs in creating and implementing treatment plans to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

While both positions conduct examinations, diagnose, treat illness and injury, and provide treatment plans, FNPs focus more on preventative care. The positions’ differences inform their specializations: FNP specializations are defined in terms of patient population, while PA specializations are defined in terms of specific areas of medicine. Both offer opportunities for the healthcare profession to expand the scope of practice.

Recently we spoke with four College leaders well-versed in the Mount’s efforts to expand its professional offerings that augment an already solid health sciences curriculum.

Joining forces for a virtual roundtable were Lynne Bongiovanni, Ph.D., Provost and Dean of the College; Anthony Garofalo, D.P.M., Director of the Physician Assistant Program; Alanna Kavanaugh, Director of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program; and Cristobal Stewart, Dean of the School of Professional and Graduate Studies.

college of mount saint vincent 18 19 continued on page 20

Let’s start with an overview of the Mount’s master’s programs in the health professions: the Physician Assistant Program and the Family Nurse Practitioner Program. How do these programs differ, and in what ways do they overlap?

ANTHONY GAROFALO [AG]:

Physician assistants and nurse practitioners are among the healthcare professions expected to see the most growth in the next decade. The Fall 2022 launch of the Physician Assistant Program has positioned the College to better meet the demand for professionals to serve the healthcare needs of New York City and beyond. To recap the role of the PA, these are skilled medical professionals who provide primary and specialty care to the same patients that were formerly seen only by MDs. Mount PA students follow the same curriculum used in medical schools for physicians in training.

ALANNA KAVANAUGH [AK]:

Family Nurse Practitioners specialize in the primary and specialty care of patients of all ages—from birth to death, we often say. More than ever before, FNPs are serving as primary care providers, especially in underserved communities where physician shortages are a real challenge. FNPs monitor patient health, diagnose and treat conditions, prescribe medication, order tests and procedures—everything you’d expect from a primary care provider. The advanced training and certification allows them to apply for grant funding, develop community health initiatives, and address groups of decision-makers. Factor in the FNP’s broad understanding of the overall health of the communities they serve, and it’s clear that FNPs are a huge asset to interdisciplinary teams that are becoming more common. With their skill, training and outlook, nurse practitioners are changing the practice of medicine.

[AG]: As far as collaboration, students from both programs will share two floors of Aquino Hall, so training modules that are common to both professions can be done in

a joint setting. In addition to sharing laboratory space, the two programs will take part in interprofessional activities and experiential learning that reflects the clinical settings in which the two professions function side by side. Working this way, they begin to understand the clear division and coordination of responsibilities. This improves team cohesiveness and makes for better patient outcomes.

How do these programs tie in with the Mount’s mission as well as the mission of the Sisters of Charity?

LYNNE BONGIOVANNI [LB]: Across all disciplines, a Mount Saint Vincent education facilitates critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and moral and ethical decision making. These are invaluable skills in any endeavor, but particularly for individuals who aspire to address the complex healthcare needs of our city and state.

Furthermore, the Mount has a strong track record of producing graduates who not only excel but also carry out the College’s core mission of service to the underserved. Nowhere is this more evident than in our programs in the health sciences. It’s a prime directive that guides how we choose our faculty and select our students. It also dovetails with the historical mission of the Sisters of Charity in serving marginalized communities. By offering these two indispensable and sought-after professional programs— and being the first in the Bronx to plant a stake in the ground, so to speak—the Mount is helping to create more healthcare stewards for the underserved.

How are the two programs addressing the needs of marginalized populations?

[AK]: After graduating from the Mount, health science professionals fan out into the hospitals of New York City, but they also remain in the community. Nurses, FNPs, and PAs frequently return to the Mount to expand their practice or pursue research—whatever it takes to meet the needs of their patient population. FNPs especially are trained to observe the needs of the community and

initiate programs that best serve those neighborhoods. For example, in an area like the Bronx—which has a very high rate of diabetes—FNPs can educate, screen, and even treat patients in their own homes. Their understanding of the culture around them helps them meet patients where they are, opening alternative pathways to promoting health and preventing disease.

[AG]: There is an extreme deficit of primary care practitioners in the area surrounding the College. Research has shown that health professionals are more likely to practice in regions where they trained. And because they are known in this area, they first become role models for students still in high school or preparing for college—giving them a reachable, attainable goal. The second likely outcome is that our graduates become leaders in their community. So the Mount is not only training exceptional clinicians, it is also fostering leaders in the profession.

How does the Mount’s commitment to diversity factor in?

[AK]: We all recognize the need to mirror the diversity of the population you serve. Nursing needs diversity, and patient care improves because of it. Patients can relate better with someone who understands their culture and doesn’t judge them, and that results in better outcomes.

CRISTOBAL STEWART [CS]: The Mount’s diversity is a very big plus. A diverse student body brings lived experiences to the learning process. In a creative community of learners, people learn from each other and the experiences they share with each other. It makes better practitioners and better teams, and builds an inclusive campus culture that students will look for throughout their careers. The Mount goes one step further by providing leadership opportunities for students. At the Mount’s Leadership Summit this Fall, speakers addressed healthcare equality and the need for inclusiveness in healthcare. Leadership opportunities that expose students to this type of awareness help drive the

conversation about ways they can be impactful in their field.

[LB]: Mount Saint Vincent is uniquely equipped to cultivate healthcare professionals to effectively serve New York City and State’s diverse population. Millions of New Yorkers experience barriers to healthcare, including a lack of cultural understanding and limited language services. The College’s ability to recruit and retain students of diverse backgrounds, coupled with our growing slate of diversity, equity, and inclusion programming, will facilitate the preparation of a more diverse medical workforce and ultimately improve care across our city and state.

What unique or added value do the Mount’s two professional programs offer?

[CS]: The Mount’s phenomenal investment in new labs, facilities, and equipment is a clear indicator of how much our students are valued. It’s really astounding. Every time a student walks into one of our classrooms or works with state-ofthe-art equipment, they know they are valued. The College has made this investment to ensure they have the absolute best learning environment, and it shows. And there’s one more aspect of this investment: the new programs and new facilities allow the Mount to host clinical obligations on

our campus. Our relationships with clinical organizations comprise a strong part of the Mount’s value to students, and now we can reciprocate.

[LB]: For the Mount’s first cohort of PAs, we placed 55 students instead of the 15 we originally targeted. This is almost unheard of, especially in the first year. Our Admission and PA recruitment teams deserve credit for how hard they worked to attract this solid cohort in such a short period. It just proves what a strong market exists for this profession and how competitive PA programs are. I can’t overstate the value of a Mount education. Among other things, it means we can select the very best and brightest students for each cohort.

How does having these programs at the Mount inspire higher goals among students?

[LB]: Nursing students in their clinical uniforms are a familiar sight on our campus, and it’s been very exciting this Fall to see our first cohort of PA students entering and leaving Aquino Hall and walking around campus wearing their white coats. The uniforms and white coats instill pride and the importance of the professions, and when wearing them students are expected to demonstrate the integrity and qualities of their respective vocation. When undergrads

see those powerful symbols, it may occur to them to ask questions about the profession. They’ll find it’s a fantastic pathway for anyone interested in a healthcare career.

What other advances in the health science professions are in the works?

[LB]: In addition to the two master’s degrees in the health professions, our programs leading to a BSN in nursing maintain robust enrollment. We are working to make our accelerated second degree pathway even more accessible to students by offering some didactic coursework through online instruction.

As President Burns outlined at All College Day for faculty and staff to start the academic year, the College’s revised strategic plan includes the development of a School of Health Professions. In addition to our existing programs, we will be working to identify and establish new academic programming for in-demand health professions—providing clinically rich learning experiences to undergraduate and graduate students. We will also collaborate with healthcare institutions to curate continuing education units (CEUs), utilizing the new state-ofthe-art cutting-edge instructional technologies in our simulation laboratories, for the continued development of their employees.

MOUNT MOMENTS

Corazon Aquino '53 during one of her many visits to her alma mater.

Alicia del Rosario Ong Alumna | Class of 1962

The del Rosarios (Virginia ’57, Amparo ’59, and Alicia ’62) are proud to call the College of Mount Saint Vincent our alma mater. I fondly remember coming back to campus in September 1986 when Corazon “Cory” Aquino, Class of 1953, was honored with the Elizabeth Seton Medal. She had just been installed as the President of the Philippines after the famed “People Power Revolution,” a non-violent mass demonstration movement which ousted Ferdinand Marcos. In September 2015, the College bestowed on my brother, Albert del Rosario, an honorary Doctor of Laws degree “for his commitment to democracy, advocacy to the poor, opposing corruption, and promoting peaceful change in the Philippines.” Albert had served as Philippine Ambassador to the United States (2001-2006) and was then the current Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs. This singular honor actually made him the 4th del Rosario to hold a degree from the Mount!

MOUNT MOMENTS

Alumna | Class of 1971

I was a junior in the Student Government Association. Back then, skirts were the dress code and we could not be on the first floor of any building in pants without a full-length coat. Katie Wilson and I read through the Student Government by-laws, which said the students governed themselves. So, we issued a decree that pants were now allowed on campus without the long coats. We were ready for some difficulty from the administration—but Sr. Margaret Mary, then Dean of Students, called us to her office and shocked us by not throwing us out, but by examining our thoughts and supporting our decision. It changed things forever on our campus back in 1969/1970.

MOUNT MOMENTS

I did not know what I wanted to be when I grew up. I chose the Mount because I wanted to be in New York City and I loved living next door to a castle! Who I met at the Mount were other women with unknown futures—women who respected each other, encouraged each other, accepted each other. I recognize now that it was a community not about fitting in, not about trying to be someone you weren’t, but belonging to a place for you to discover who you would be when you grew up. And you could be growing up for a long, long time with new life-changing events, new goals, new insights, and high expectations. 50 years ago, we did not have the slogan Right Place on the River, but I knew then and I know now—I was in the right place.

MOUNT MOMENTS

Reflects gifts to all funds and projects received from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022. † Indicates deceased.

Emily Linehan Nestler Alumna | Class of 1973

My first recollection of the Mount was going to an alumnae event with my mother, Lillian Ahearn Linehan ’38. I remember that there was a puppet show for children and the campus was so beautiful! I was a dayhop and had many happy days in the dayhop lounge with my friends—grabbing a cup of coffee between classes and studying together. But I would have to say the most memorable Mount Moment of all was getting married to my husband of 49 years in the Chapel!

175 1847–2022

“I encourage all members of our Mount community to take time to be thankful and celebrate a college we all can be proud of—an institution that, for 175 years, has stayed true to its mission in the Vincentian/Setonian tradition of service and education. An institution that guides students to seek the development of the whole person—both within and beyond the classroom. And an institution that has produced alumnae/i who are proud to be Mount Made and intent on becoming caretakers of a better world.”

MOUNT MOMENTS

1993

Jennifer McGowan Barbrack Alumna | Class of 1992

I was blessed to spend four amazing years at CMSV alongside wonderful friends, faculty, and family. Particularly, I am honored to be an alumna and the niece of an incredible person and professor, Sr. Patricia McGowan ’66. She inspired me to become the teacher I am today. I am grateful that my memories of the Mount include her and I know that she is dearly missed by the Mount community.

In 1991, when Sr. Doris Smith was President, she and her assistant, Sr. Donna Dodge, began the tradition of marking the day in April when the charter of the Academy of Mount Saint Vincent was amended to allow it to offer college courses. Founders Day soon became an annual event to celebrate the College’s history and the Sisters of Charity, who in 1847 founded the Academy which then grew into the College.

FINAL & LASTING APPRECIATION

SISTERS OF CHARITY

IN 1847, THE SISTERS OF CHARITY OF NEW YORK founded the College of Mount Saint Vincent to provide excellent liberal arts education in the Catholic tradition, preparing students for lives of professional accomplishment and service. With great pride, we strive to fulfill this mission. In the tradition of the Sisters of Charity, we ask everyone who works at the College to be committed to this fundamental purpose: to educate the whole person, to take part in a lively conversation with religious faith, and to engender a dedication to service.

Listed here are Sisters who, during the past year, have lent their talent, wisdom, and spirit in a variety of capacities to work on behalf of the College. With immense gratitude, we acknowledge and celebrate their leadership, dedication, and commitment to Mount Saint Vincent.

’Phinish the Field

ount Saint Vincent has been a leader in competitive athletics—particularly for women—for almost a century. As soon as construction on Cardinal Hayes Gymnasium was completed in 1930, students formed teams, joined in on local competitions, and refined their skills. It was a way for students to unite amongst a common bond and form lifelong foundations in teamwork, individual responsibility, and determination. But, at the time, inter-college athletic competition for women among neighboring colleges and universities was not widely practiced—leaving a gap in equality for Mount students.

Luckily, the world of collegiate athletics would catch up to Mount Saint Vincent with a leap toward justice for all student-athletes following the passing of Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972.

“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”

The implementation of Title IX was monumental— especially for a college like the Mount that did not shift to a co-educational institution until 1974—as colleges and universities became required to provide participation opportunities for women and men that are substantially proportionate to their respective rates of enrollment. And although the Mount did not officially join the NCAA for Division III competition until 1987 (becoming one of the founding five members of the Skyline Conference in 1989), Title IX opened doors for our student-athletes by building upon the legacy and spirit of the Sisters of Charity— calling for equality and equity in athletic competition for all students.

“From our founding 175 years ago by the Sisters as an Academy—the first institution to offer higher learning for women in New York—to our current status as a co-educational Hispanic-Serving and Minority-Serving Institution, the College has been committed to valuing the lived experiences of individuals from diverse backgrounds,” stated President Susan R. Burns, Ph.D. “The celebration of the 50th anniversary of Title IX is a natural extension of the College’s mission, values, and commitment to the experience of Mount students and our community as a whole.”

So, while our nation commemorates 50 years since the inception of this groundbreaking piece of legislation, Mount Saint Vincent is proud to celebrate over 90 years of continued effort to achieve educational equity both within and beyond the classroom.

41
continued on page 42 40

The Department of Athletics and Recreation 2022 Hall of Fame inductee class honored the 50th anniversary of Title IX, as each of this year’s inductees were outstanding female athletes: Jessie Mitchell ’11, Christina Barone ’17, Mackenzie Heizer ’17, and the 2015 women’s basketball team and 2015 women’s volleyball team (who both won their respective programs’ first-ever Skyline Championship).

More celebrations, including a social media video campaign highlighting past and present female athletes, coaches, staff, and even Sisters, is in the works and will be released over the course of the year.

Since the passing of Title IX, the College’s athletic programs have expanded and flourished into championship-worthy teams. The Mount continues to remain abreast of nationwide shifts in college athletics and is committed to the modernization of its athletic facilities to support the hundreds of student-athletes who compete under the Dolphin mascot. That commitment has been tangible on campus with recent developments on Marillac Field and at neighboring Fay Field.

Construction on Marillac Field—located at the foot of the Mount’s Riverdale campus, overlooking the glistening Hudson River and majestic New Jersey Palisades—was completed in 2014. It was the first NCAA-regulation sized athletic field on campus and brought the College’s soccer and lacrosse programs home.

Marillac Field has been an asset to the Department of Athletics and Recreation—fostering community among both players and spectators, providing a consistent space for practices and games, and strengthening recruitment and retainment efforts of student athletes. And now, construction to enhance the quality of Marillac Field has further propelled it as a resource for not only the Mount, but the larger New York metro area.

This past Summer, the College secured a partnership with Manhattan Soccer Club (MSC)—the largest and most comprehensive soccer club in New York City. Marillac Field will now be outfitted with athletic turf, lighting will be added over the area of play, new benches will be installed, and a state-of-the-art press box will be constructed. The investment, in excess of $1,000,000 and funded by MSC, will expand the amount of time Marillac Field can be used, bringing athletes from near and far to the Right Place on the River for competition.

“This project is an amazing opportunity to give our students the elevated facility and experience they deserve, while enhancing the profile of the College’s Department of Athletics and Recreation,” said Director for Athletics Phil Stern. “We will have scheduling

flexibility for our teams and be able to give the entire campus a great intramural experience under the lights.”

In exchange for Manhattan Soccer Club’s investment, they will have primary access to Marillac Field beyond the College’s use for its practices, games, clinics, and camps. MSC offers all levels of development and competition for players from ages 3 to 23, which includes approximately 70 teams serving over 800 families throughout the boroughs. And with new access to a field in the Bronx, the group will also bring hundreds of local community members onto campus. The partnership benefits both organizations in several ways, including opening up future enrollment opportunities and increasing awareness of the Mount throughout the City and region.

In addition to the improvements sponsored by the Manhattan Soccer Club, the College is asking for supporters to help “PHINish the Field” to add a concession stand and bathrooms approximate to the field’s location.

Meanwhile—across campus—there’s a more pressing issue: the Mount’s baseball and softball teams have never had a home field. The teams have trekked across New York City and Westchester utilizing any accessible field for their practices and games.

The situation has not only presented challenges for our dedicated baseball and softball players, but it has prevented the broader Mount community from engaging with and supporting the programs on the sidelines. That’s about to change.

Mount Saint Vincent has executed an agreement with the neighboring City of Yonkers to revitalize Fay Field—a baseball and softball field directly adjacent to the back of the Peter J. Sharp Athletic and Recreation Center. The College and City of Yonkers will share the cost of improvements to the field and, in exchange, the College will have guaranteed access for baseball and softball practices and games.

Considerable work must be done to help Fay Field meet the guidelines for NCAA play, including leveling; seeding and landscaping; installing fencing, posts, and safety nets; and constructing a scoreboard and bleachers. But, the soon-to-be permanent and readily accessible facility will benefit student-athletes and allow for spectators and supporters—increasing sportsmanship and camaraderie among Dolphins and their dolfans.

This is all just the start of the next phase of Mount Saint Vincent athletics—increasing the resources available to our dedicated athletes, but keeping academics and traditions at the forefront of our students’ experiences. The only question left to answer is: which team will bring home the next championship banner?

Leadership for the Common Good

or years, the College has featured renowned leaders from a wide variety of businesses and industries, covering topics anchored in leadership and, of course, our mission. We’ve welcomed attendees from the greater New York area, as well as students, alumni, trustees, and members of the faculty and administration, for various executive leadership programmatic initiatives, including noteworthy keynotes, workshops, panels, and speaker series.

This year has been no different. In October, we hosted Leadership for the Common Good: Health Equity and Social Justice, a forum that welcomed distinguished speakers and expert panelists, including Bishop Edmund James Whalen for the opening presentation, The Catholic Intellectual Tradition in Today’s World: Leading with Faith and Reason*, and Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu for a keynote discussion on global health initiatives, including insights on advancing menstrual equity.

The summit also officially launched the 2022-2023 season of programs and opportunities offered by one of the College’s newest initiatives, the Center for Leadership.

With a necessary focus on health equity, the Summit highlighted some the Mount’s newest additions to its robust array of programs in the health professions. Such offerings (including the new PA program—the only program of its kind registered in the Bronx), along with health-related programs in other disciplines—including nursing (with undergraduate, graduate, and accelerated tracks), family

nurse practitioner, and healthcare management—widen the opportunities for students wanting careers that address the complex and pervasive mosaic which is healthcare today.

“Future leaders in the healthcare sector must bring sharpened skills to their careers in the traditional areas of business practice,” said Lynne Bongiovanni, Ph.D., Provost and Dean of the College. “The health sciences— including medically robust offerings in nursing, family nurse practitioner, physician assistant studies, and even an online MBA in healthcare management—constitute a major strength at Mount Saint Vincent. We have witnessed tremendous growth in our rigorous, highly competitive programs, resulting in a track record of turning out exceptional healthcare professionals. We knew it was time to bring together the leaders of today with our community to highlight the issues that impact health equity.”

The event also welcomed Dan Reingold, President and CEO of RiverSpring Health, and Pat Tursi, CEO of Elizabeth Seton Children’s, for a healthcare panel; Matthew Archibald, Ph.D., Assistant Professor and Director of the Fishlinger Center, for a presentation alongside other Mount faculty experts on health equity in education and academic research; and Pamela J. Newman, Ph.D., Founder, President, and CEO of PJN Strategies LLC, and former trustee Michael P. Hoffman Chairman Emeritus and Founder of Changing Our World, Inc., for a presentation culminating the day’s theme on leading for the common good through equity and the Golden Rule.

Carrying out the mission of the Center for Leadership is a multi-disciplinary

undertaking supported by members who represent every aspect of the College—and the Summit is a direct result of their efforts. Among these partners exists a remarkably influential Advisory Council, co-chaired by: President Susan R. Burns, Ph.D., Pamela J. Newman, John Prufeta, Founder, CEO, and General Partner of Medical Excellence Capital, and Michael P. Hoffman

Created to provide intentional leadership opportunities which will strengthen in our students an understanding of how to manifest the best of themselves as engaged members of our community, the Center is multi-faceted.

“The Center for Leadership’s mission is to provide opportunities for students to recognize their own potential and to use that discovery to create more meaningful and impactful engagement at the College—and beyond,” said Gabrielle Occhiogrosso, Ed.D., Dean of the Undergraduate College. “The ability for our students to hone in on leadership skills, coupled with the support from our Oxley Integrated Advising Program, begins on day one and carries through to graduation. We’re looking forward to further expanding our programming and mentorship experiences at the Mount, bringing our community together with exemplary industry leaders through the new Center.”

On All College Day, as campus prepared for the Fall 2022 semester, Dr. Burns announced a strategic plan that will expand the reach and outline the objectives of the Center for Leadership going forward—something the College is especially excited to do, beginning with what was a most informative and innovative Summit.

*First in a series of discussions on the “Role of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition in Today’s Society.” Included in the Center for Leadership’s annual summit by Joan M. Moran, a Mount Saint Vincent alumna and former Board of Trustees Chairperson, in memory of her father, Deacon John R. Maloney, in recognition of his lifelong service to God and to others.
