We have more than 40 different clubs and organizations on campus. Whatever your interest—journalism, finance, creative writing, acting, art, dance, cultural awareness, athletics, community service, the environment, and more— there’s a club for you.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Mount graduates go on to become leaders in education, business, medicine, nursing, communication, and government. The strong sense of direction and purpose that carries them starts right here. There are many ways to hone your leadership skills—you can be an orientation leader or a resident assistant, join student government, take on a leadership role in your club, or play a bigger part as captain of an athletic team.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT

The Student Government Association (SGA) is an actively functioning body of students representing the full-time undergraduate and graduate student populations. SGA promotes responsible self-governance through its Constitution and Bylaws. By representing students and coordinating student activities and social functions, SGA provides an opportunity for all students to become actively involved in the governance of the College. This involvement promotes the general welfare by developing the community and opening channels of communication.

WORK HARD, PLAY HARD: ATHLETICS AT THE MOUNT

The Department of Athletics and Recreation is committed to reflecting the values of excellence and achievement to which our institution aspires.

THE MOUNT IS A MEMBER of the Skyline Conference and an NCAA Division III affiliate. We currently offer over a dozen varsity sports and emphasize athletic participation as an integral part of the overall collegiate experience. We also offer many intramural and club sports, open to all members of our Dolphin student body.

The Department complements the College’s mission, emphasizing the holistic development of our students—we encourage honesty, integrity, teamwork, and discipline. SERVICE IS NOT AN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY AT THE MOUNT. Service is an essential component of the College’s mission and the charism of the Sisters of Charity.

Through an integrated and broad range of programs, the College challenges its students to be Leaders in Service—individuals who respect the dignity of every person, freely share the benefits of their talent and education, and who understand that true charity is an act of love and respect between equals.

ROTC AT THE MOUNT

The College connects interested students with the U.S. Army ROTC at Fordham University and the U.S. Air Force ROTC at Manhattan College. ROTC programs help students earn a college degree, requiring a single term of military service in return. Participants gain an exceptional Mount Saint Vincent education, launch a career, and expand their commitment to servant leadership.

LEADERS IN SERVICE

Students complete over 10,000 hours of service annually. Reflective of the College’s mission, students respond to the immediate needs of the disabled, disenfranchised, elderly, homeless, working poor, and youth, while pursing advocacy and policy work to address the cause of inequities. Our volunteers work to create change with some of the most disadvantaged populations across New York City and beyond—students give back in our community, across the country, and around the world.

On campus, our Office of Mission and Ministry offers a center for spiritual enrichment and personal development, fostering a spirit of service and sense of responsibility as modeled by Saints Vincent de Paul and Elizabeth Ann Seton.

And to exemplify the College’s most fundamental values, the Seton Service and Leadership Program welcomes Mount students to join a like-minded community of peers who serve together, fostering servant leadership skills. The Seton Service and Leadership Program also offers a competitive scholarship—providing full room and board for four years—sponsored by the Sisters of Charity. Those with high academic profiles and outstanding community service and leadership skills are encouraged to apply.

THE FIRST THING PEOPLE NOTICE when they visit the Mount is the striking beauty of the campus. On your way to class every day, you’ll walk past a visual medley of grassy hills, historic sites, classic architecture, and modern buildings.

We maintain a thriving campus atmosphere, while creating new facilities and opportunities for students. Updated buildings and residence halls offer students access to various suites, lounges, kitchens, and study areas. You can live in a single, with a roommate, or with a group of fellow Mount students in one of our six dorms.

The College also has state-of-the-art simulation labs, a TV production studio, radio station, digital media labs, art and performance studios, a black box theater, professional dance studios, a music conservatory, sports medicine suites, NCAA regulation athletic facilities, and so much more.

Those 163 characters could, hypothetically, fit in a tweet blasted out by alum Christopher Summo ’15. And while he didn’t actually send it out into cyberspace, we certainly would have given it a retweet.

Majoring in communication during his time at the Mount, Chris had an original interest of pursuing a career as a sports broadcaster. But after taking countless classes with dedicated members of the Mount’s faculty, Chris found his passion for advertising.

If it weren’t for the guidance and mentorship he received from those professors, Chris never would have found the confidence needed to step out of his comfort zone and launch his career.

“My professors taught me so much that I’ve applied not only to my professional career, but also to my personal interests,” he said. “I feel very fortunate and blessed that I had such a strong group of teachers within my major while I was at the Mount.”

More than 17,000 students have graduated from the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Much like you, they came to the Mount full of promise and hope. Here, they prepared for a career, not just a job.

After graduating, Chris dove head-first into the advertising sphere. He got his start at Resolution Media, a full-service social media advertising agency for high-growth, future-focused clients. Then, in the winter of 2019, Chris interviewed and was offered a position as a client account manager at none other than social media giant Twitter. Moving from the marketing side of advertising to the sales side, Chris took on the challenge with diligence and success.

Over the past four years, Chris has contributed to significant sales growth across a number of key financial services accounts for Twitter— prompting him to be promoted to a senior client account manager and later to client partner.

“My advice to any incoming first-year students, particularly at Mount Saint Vincent, is to take advantage of all the opportunities that are presented to you,” reflected Chris.

NEVER DID MALLORIE BOCACHICA ’10 think that, at only 12 years into her career in education, she’d be at the head of a robust and rigorous building of teachers and students. She’s leading the charge to change how students learn at a charter network called Uncommon Schools, an educational system consisting of 57 schools serving over 21,000 lowincome students across the northeast. Mallorie considers herself both lucky and proud to have had the amazing opportunity to serve as principal of an Uncommon School— Leadership Prep Canarsie Elementary Academy in Brooklyn.

It was easy for Mallorie to nail down her major as a firstyear student at the College—double majoring in math and psychology while enrolling in the Mount’s esteemed elementary education curriculum. Her four years of study were no joke—thinking back on it, Mallorie doesn’t remember how she had time to balance everything! But it prepared her to lead a classroom, and now a school, of her own—ready to take on new challenges at the drop of a hat.

Mallorie’s had a dedicated support system in place to help her achieve her goals, including guidance from professors, mentors, and past cooperating teachers from her time student teaching.

Associate Professor of Teacher Education Mary Ellen Sullivan was a guiding force behind Mallorie’s early teaching career. Mallorie saw how Dr. Sullivan went out of her way to maintain positive relationships with each of the students in her cohorts, and it’s become one of Mallorie’s goals to replicate that care and concern Dr. Sullivan taught her.

“Our practicum classes—where my peers in the Teacher Education Program came together to share our experiences in the field—really allowed me to begin to put theory into practice,” said Mallorie. “I was able to establish my individual pedagogy as a student teacher, and then I was given the tools to actually put it into action.”

And Mallorie’s career only continues to blossom. But no matter where she finds herself, she knows that her heart will forever be in a classroom.

“I’m a teacher first—always,” Mallorie affirmed. “Teaching will forever be my passion and I’m grateful to be able to play a small role in changing the lives of my students—one lesson at a time.”
