Academics OVERVIEW The College of Mount Saint Vincent has grown incrementally and strategically. The full-time population of the Undergraduate College has increased by nearly 170 percent of its enrollment in 2000, with graduate and postbaccalaureate enrollment now over 200. The College has maintained its commitment to serving talented individuals from New York City, while broadening its geographic reach with out-of-state students comprising 20 percent of the first-year student population. The College remains an essential opportunity creator for students from underserved and underrepresented backgrounds. A 2017 study ranked the College third in the nation in social mobility among 578 selective public and private colleges and universities. This ranking confirms that the College opens worlds of opportunity to students without regard to family means. As one of the most diverse colleges in the country, nearly half of all Mount Saint Vincent undergraduates are among the first generation of their families to pursue higher education. Many have financial need, and the College continues to provide significant financial assistance.

CURRICULUM The College of Mount Saint Vincent undergraduate education prepares students for careers, not just jobs. The faculty recently revised the 49-hour four-year core curriculum emphasizing critical thinking and active inquiry. The new core affirms the College’s commitment to an authentic liberal arts education designed to help students build a solid foundation of knowledge, an appreciation of moral and ethical values, and essential skills such as problem solving and effective communication. Students have multiple opportunities to connect classroom theory and real-world experience. The depth and breadth of the core curriculum provide students the knowledge, experience, and wisdom needed to lead an accomplished, meaningful life. Beyond the core curriculum, undergraduate academic programs have been significantly expanded including Accounting, Public Policy, Data Analytics, Theatre, Fine Arts, and Visual Arts and Experimental Media. In addition, the Interdisciplinary Studies major now includes Law and Justice and Social Services tracks. At the graduate level the Office of Professional and Graduate Studies at the College of Mount Saint Vincent offers true excellence: world class recognized graduate programs, superb academic quality, and the flexibility to work at the student’s own pace. Each graduate program serves a diverse range of students, from recent graduates to working adults. Students are able to complete their education, advance in their career, or establish their professional life with a Mount graduate degree. Post-baccalaureate and graduate opportunities have been expanded to meet emerging needs. The College has launched Accelerated Nursing and Master of Business Administration programs, as well as Master of Science programs in childhood/ 14

special education, adolescent/special education, and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages). The College has seen significant growth in serving adults’ professional needs for growth and graduate-level study particularly in Nursing and considers expansion of these opportunities a key strategic priority for the institution. To that end, in June 2019, the Board of Trustees approved the creation of the College of Mount Saint Vincent School of Nursing and Health Professions. Leveraging the College’s strengths, including robust undergraduate nursing and natural science programs, the School will offer degrees and certificates that will prepare the next generation of health care providers and leaders. Work is also underway to seek approval and accreditation for a Master of Science in Physician Assistant studies. The School Plans to offer a range of Nurse Practitioner (NP) specializations, including Adult Gerontological and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, within the Master of Science in Nursing degree. Graduate programs are nationally accredited to ensure the highest level of quality. They are built upon the College of Mount Saint Vincent’s combination of liberal arts focus and real-world learning through internships, research, and service. At the same time, programs are designed for convenience, affordability, and close mentoring. The College of Mount Saint Vincent is fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, with the next reaffirmation visit scheduled for the 2022-23 academic year. The Mount also has specialized accreditation in Business (ACBSP), Nursing (CCNE), and Education (CAEP).

FACULTY
FORWARD MOMENTUM
The College’s programs are exceptional in large part due to the remarkably talented and devoted faculty. The exchange of ideas and information between students and faculty is at the core of the student experience. While significantly increasing enrollment, the College has preserved the personal, closeknit relationships between students and faculty. The number of full-time faculty has increased accordingly to maintain a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1, with an average class size of under 20 students.
The College has also kept pace in renovating and modernizing instructional spaces and providing access to technology. There are 15 computer labs with over 300 public access computers across campus. Most instructional spaces have been equipped with smart classroom technologies. In addition, major renovation projects have focused on modeling state-of-the-art upgrades in learning spaces and labs.
The role of individual faculty members is central to the academic experience for all students at the College. Faculty work closely with individual students to assist them in identifying their major area of study and fulfilling all course requirements. Because many students come to the College of Mount Saint Vincent with significant needs, faculty members often serve as mentors and advocates in addition to their roles as instructors and advisers. Their commitment is to helping students succeed in overcoming barriers and successfully completing their undergraduate degrees. Because of the critical role of faculty, the College has launched a number of initiatives focused on recruiting and retaining exemplary faculty. Faculty salaries are now at the 70th percentile nationally, and the institution has increased sabbatical opportunities, as well as funding for scholarly research. Additional support for faculty has also been a central fund-raising focus with the establishment of three endowed professorships in recent years.

Following a series of renovations, the Division of Communication, Art, and Media is now housed in a remodeled facility featuring editing suites, ceramics, print-making, and sculpting studios. As careers in STEM fields skyrocketed over the last decade, the College invested significant resources in upgrading its natural science facilities. Renovations in Science Hall created ten state-of-the-art laboratories for students and faculty in biology, chemistry, and biochemistry. The $11 million project also updated classroom spaces and expanded study areas for students and faculty in biology, chemistry, and biochemistry. The current project demonstrating the College’s investment in the future is Aquino Hall, currently under construction and scheduled to open during the fall of 2020. This facility is designed with dual purposes. It will house technologically advanced nursing simulation laboratories to support the latest and best practices for training nursing professionals as well as suite-style housing for juniors and seniors.

History Campuses
In 1817, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton sent a contingent of Sisters of Charity from Maryland to New York City to staff an orphanage on Mott Street. Knowing that children need not only care but also education in order to thrive, the Sisters began founding schools, beginning at Mott Street and eventually spreading across the diocese. This was the beginning of the parochial school system of New York. Soon, they had what may well be the first system of truly free schools in the world, using revenue from those who could afford to pay in order to open free schools for those with no financial means at all. In 1847, the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul of New York became an independent congregation. That year, before there were public colleges or even high schools for women in New York, they founded the Academy of Mount Saint Vincent— the first institution to offer higher learning for women in New York. The Sisters of Charity committed the Academy to liberal education, and it developed an extraordinary reputation for academic rigor and quality. The Academy was located with the new Motherhouse at McGowan’s Pass at the northeast corner of what is now Central Park. In 1859, the Academy and the Motherhouse moved to Riverdale, N.Y., establishing the Mount Saint Vincent campus overlooking the Hudson River. The Academy grew, and the Sisters opened schools, hospitals, and an array of services for the poor. One free school was at Mount Saint Vincent, where the great playwright Eugene O’Neill studied as a boy. By the close of the nineteenth century, the Academy was recognized among the finest institutions of higher learning for women in the region. By 1898, like Wellesley, Mount Holyoke, and other “female seminaries,” the Academy changed its corporate status to prepare to claim its equal role and title as a college for women.
19
College of Mount Saint Vincent | President
In 1911, the Academy’s charter was amended to change its name to the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The first collegiate residence hall opened that year. The first class graduated with the bachelor’s degree in 1914. Within three years, the College was sending graduates on to earn the Ph.D., truly extraordinary for women at the time. For more than a century, the College has grown, revised curricula, become coeducational, added a constellation of majors, added undergraduate and graduate extension programs in what is now called the Office of Professional and Graduate Studies, and stayed abreast of and led innovations in higher education. The College’s mission has been consistent throughout. It offers undergraduate programs of exceptional quality in the Catholic and ecumenical tradition. Its abiding commitment to liberal education is based on the conviction that the liberal arts offer the finest preparation for a life of accomplishment, responsibility, leadership, and service. Across all disciplines, therefore, students are required to develop a repertoire of analytical skills, critical thinking, and clear oral and written expression. Confident that a good life demands thoughtful judgment, the Mount calls every student to learn about religious, moral, and ethical thinking. It lives its motto:
Teach me goodness and discipline and knowledge.
Leadership
PRESIDENT
GOVERNANCE
Dr. Charles L. Flynn, Jr. will retire after 20 years of transformative service to the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Dr. Flynn’s tenure has been a period of extraordinary growth in the face of an increasingly challenging environment, bringing to the College increased enrollment, new programs, reconstructed and new facilities, and national recognition for the accomplishments of faculty and students.
The Board of Trustees of the College of Mount Saint Vincent is made of up of 32 leaders in business, the community, higher education and the non-profit world. 15 of the Trustees are graduates of the Mount and five are Sisters of Charity. In addition, there are nine Trustees Emeriti. All of the Trustees’ engagement to the College of Mount Saint Vincent is grounded in a strong identification with the school’s mission and core values. The Mount’s Trustees possess strong intellect, keen strategic skills, experience in a multitude of disciplines and reputations for excellence in a wide variety of professions.
During his tenure, fundraising has reached record highs, the College has begun to build a credible endowment, and its financial foundation has been secured. However, Dr. Flynn’s vision and faithful leadership are better illustrated by the fact that the College’s growth has been mission-centered. Over the past twenty years, undergraduate enrollment has more than doubled; the College has restored and added vibrant academic programs; and has comprehensively rebuilt (and added to) its science laboratories, its communication and art studios, its computer laboratories, its residence halls, its athletic center and athletic fields, its campus roadways and parking. For all its progress, the College is most proud to have earned national recognition for its leadership in expanding access to authentically high-quality educational opportunity for talented students of every economic and social background. Dr. Flynn has served many community and professional organizations. Most recently he served on the Executive Committee of both the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) and New York’s Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU). Dr. Flynn received a B.A. from Hamilton College, and the M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University. 20
