Black History Season in Leicester
Black History Season has its origins even as far back as the 1920s in America. Now in its 21st year of being in Britain is there any point to dedicate a whole month to black history? African Renaissance is the theme for the forthcoming Black History Season. According to Leicester City Council African Renaissance, "identifies African/African Caribbean history and prompts the discovery of past and progressive achievements across the Diaspora."
"Relevant to today" Simon Lake, the Senior Curator of Fine Arts, New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, says that the 2008 programme of events will provide something new: "This year's is exploring Black History through talks and exhibitions...we will be looking at artists and their vision and how it is relevant to today." The gallery is taking a very personal approach by having lectures about the existence of Blacks in Leicester: There is a selection of speakers to give different perspectives. It is trying to show the importance and power of black artists.
Man in His Universe On the cover of the Black History Season brochure is a sculpture by Jamaican artist Ronald Moody, that's called 'Man In His Universe.' It is one of the many works that is going to be featured at the New Walk Museum. It is typical of the type of art that is going to be on show and is characteristic of African art in general, and according to Mr Lake, "the legacy of black artists should be given due recognition."
One Leicester The Black History Season is part of 'One Leicester', whereby everyone can come together and enjoy African/AfricanCaribbean culture.
