The LAX Playground Partner: Angie Espinoza Los Angeles, California (2020)
Open-air leisure and natural green space are strikingly scarce at Los Angeles International Airport. Travelers spend enough time tirelessly navigating the built environment, yet there is no place to take time away from it. As the Theme Building’s historic site lies in LAX’s heart, there is an opportunity to revive the airport’s natural landscape starting at its core. The LAX Playground and Architecture Learning Center offer extensive green space (about 150,000 SF) to begin the reclamation of the natural world.

The BE.ing Collective
Barbara G. Laurie Student Design Competition | Top 7 Finish Partners: Mary Le, Deysy Cruz, Dai Le, Henry Melendrez, Tuyen Le NOMA Conference | Oakland, California (2020)
The BE.ing Collective, a place that fosters humanity, justice, and identity for the black community, has a goal to recover East Oakland and become more resilient together. With the form and facade appearing as broken fragments, the BE.ing Collective portrays Black history events weaving together as one central idea -- the disparities that have caused this ongoing fight for change. The healing elements of this proposal aim to empower the community by its programmatic functions. It strives towards excellence and resiliency in an architecture that reflects its vibrant population. Staying true to the core of East Oakland, the BE.ing is characterized by its individuals’ realities and the displaced notion of inequality. Acknowledging, empowering, and preserving the culture is imperative in being together.

Sherman Hill Partner: McKenna Winther Des Moines, Iowa (2021)
At the corner of the historic Sherman Hill neighborhood, there is an opportunity to bridge itself with the rest of the city of Des Moines via recreation and leisure that is very much needed. As the site has a drastic change in grade, the walkable green roof makes the steepness more gentle and provides a unique journey along the way. All under one roof, there are countless activities for the public, including an amphitheater, lounge, skate park, rock wall, running track, basketball park, turf field, and much more.

Boone Municipal Airport Richard F. Hansen Prize Finalist Partner: Jihoon Kim Boone, Iowa (2019)
The Boone Municipal airport’s existing condition of poor infrastructure was a casualty of its low utility and upkeep. With only about 60 flights per month, the potential of this site has not been realized. We explore a new possibility to revitalize the Boon Municipal Airport by introducing a new infrastructure and program. An Aerospace Engineering Center’s proposal introduces a symbiotic relationship between flight aviation (the users) and its design process (the engineers).

The Bayshore Preserve Partners: Anthony Betti, Davis Hunt San Francisco, California (2021)
Over time, wealthy private landowners have begun to buy up farm land due to the high intrinsic value that the land holds. This land becomes privatized and is held onto as an asset, and not as a resource for the community. Today, the roundhouse remains abandoned after a fire destroyed the building in the early 2000s. The dead infrastructure is now left to decay and provides little to no usage. Rather than allowing this valuable land to fade away, now is the time for it to become an agricultural resource to the community.
