BEST SALES INCREASE
OF A SPECIAL SECTION: FINALS ISSUE
As a newspaper that generates less than $3,000 on average per issue, we rely heavily on our special sections to generate more revenue for our operations. In the current economy we rely on them even more. Add to that a bad home football schedule, and a team that did not get a bowl bid this year, and our revenue opportunities were minimized for the fall semester. We spent the fall semester really focusing on special issues and pages to generate as much revenue as we could to try to mitigate the losses. Our best performance came with our Finals Issue special edition. The Finals Issue is a product we have been working on over the last two and a half years to take hold in our area. It has been a work in progress. This year we focused on two areas: spec ads and sales education. In late October, we reviewed with the sales staff the previous years’ issues, showed them successful Finals Issues from other campus papers, and gave examples of ideas where they could grow their customers. The sales managers reviewed each sales representative’s account lists and helped them create a target account list. From that list each representative was required to create 5 spec ads for presentation. The sales managers also role played the sales pitch with the sales represenative. The extra time in development, and better preparation in idea generation and sales education paid off extremely well for us. The section increased from $5,696.04 in 2010 to $8,878.02 in 2011. A 55% increase in revenue.

A Day At The Races
Study habits change for exams in preparation for finals week By Catey Traylor Staff Reporter
As finals week approaches, students re-evaluate their study habits in preparation for exams. Britney Becht, south campus success coach, said part of her job is to walk around residence halls and offer students studying advice. “Success coaches walk around buildings and hand out time management planning sheets along with study tips,” Becht said. Avoiding Facebook, studying in a quiet place and taking advantage of study rooms in residence halls are the top three suggestions on the list of study tips handed out. Sparta sophomore Dexter McKellar studies nightly and said his study habits change during exam week. “When finals come around, I study every night for three to four hours. I manage my time by studying for the most important exams the most and the least important exams the least,” he said. “Then, the night before my big exams, I’ll just
study for those classes and focus on what’s most important at that time.” Neguanee freshman Emma Collins also makes variations to her study habits for exam week. “For each exam, I sit for around three hours and study instead of spreading out my studying,” she said. “I do all the study guides and go over old tests and it really helps.” As suggested by the study tips handed out, students use study rooms in the residence halls as an outlet to study without distraction. “My ideal place to study if I’m really getting into it is the small group study room so I can still listen to music, but without other distractions that are in my room,” McKellar said. “It’s a lot easier to focus without video games blaring or people talking.” The study tips handed out by success coaches also stresses taking breaks periodically while studying. Howell freshman Julia Wagner said she takes breaks every hour or so. “If I get overwhelmed, I’ll take a break to watch televi-
sion or read a book,” she said. “This keeps me from getting frustrated or bored and becoming unproductive.” McKellar offers advice for students who may feel overwhelmed with studying. “The most important thing is not to make it you against the world,” he said. “Work together and study with people from your classes. It’ll help a lot because they can learn from you and you can learn from them.” Becht suggests students struggling to manage their studying before finals make an appointment with their success coach in the success centers located in their dorms, but offered a piece of advice she commonly gives to every student. “Really, every student is different and their study habits reflect that,” Becht said. “A big piece of advice I offer, though, is to plan ahead. If you make a list of what you have to do, when the time comes to complete everything, it’s a lot less overwhelming.” studentlife@cm-life.com

Professionals share ways to cope for students during final exams By Jessica Fecteau Senior Reporter
Math Puzzle
Finals combined with the holidays make for a little less cheer and a little more stress for some college students. Shelby Township freshman Lindsay Maunz said both upcoming events are affecting her right now. “I’m stressed about my chem final because it’s a standardized test and it’s cumulative, which is not a good combination for me,” she said. Maunz said finals in college are much different than her finals last year as a senior in high school. “It’s your last time to do good in the class,” she said. “You don’t get another semester to average your grade out like some of the classes in high school.” Irene O’Boyle, health sciences associate professor, said stress can impact almost everybody’s system. “Some individuals get stomach aches, others get muscle pain, rashes, pimples, etc.,” she said. To cope with these issues, everybody handles stress differently, O’Boyle said. “Often times the overall goal is to have a ‘mind-emptying experience,’” she said. “Our minds and bodies get so full of excess energy and stress that we find a way to let it all go.” Sophomore Cory Kirkpatrick said she deals with
stress in her own way. “The main thing I am stressed about is a 15-page paper due on the same day I have two exams,” the Kinde native said. “I am dealing with it by just spreading out how much I work on and I also take some time by myself to relax and listen to music.” Stress during the holidays and from final exams may result from many factors, said Gary Silker, assistant professor of counseling. High expectations, conflicting schedules and needs, fatigue from long travel or lack of sleep and time pressures all contribute to stress. “Financial pressure from getting to the end of the semester or holiday expenses can also impact feeling stressed, as will changing roles when returning home without a set routine,” Silker said. Silker said Seasonal Affective Disorder may affect some people as well during this season. “The days get shorter, resulting in less sunlight and longer hours of darkness,” he said. “The result is a seasonal depression that can be relieved with phototherapy involving a few hours of exposure to a special light to simulate sunlight.” O’Boyle said experts and research have shown that about 75 to 85 percent of all doctor visits are related to some sort of stress.
SUDOKU GUIDELINES: To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. The more numbers you can figure out, the easier it gets to solve!
“Doctors often use a combination of medicines (pharmaceuticals), massage therapy, diet, exercise (or) professional counseling,” she said. To differentiate depression from stress, he said there are specific symptoms to look for; noticing if you or someone you know is withdrawn and not participating in the holidays with family or friends as they normally would, sleeping more than usual or have difficulty sleeping and being noticeably quiet or rebuff invitations for activities. He said in pronounced cases, there may be a loss of appetite. Taking things one step at a time is how Maunz said she handles her end of the semester stress. “I also try to work out a little and get more sleep because of the fact that I know I won’t be getting enough sleep next week,” she said. In addition to Maunz’s approach to relieve stress, Silker suggests reducing expectations and remembering it is healthy and OK to say no. Student Health Services has resources to help students, especially during exam week and busy times of the academic year, O’Boyle said. “The best suggestion that I have for students is to reach out to someone if you are experiencing a great deal of stress,” she said.

Library, local businesses offer extended hours during finals week By Chad Mitchell Staff Reporter
Exams start at 8 a.m. Monday for some Central Michigan University students and study space in Mount Pleasant has become hot property. Maggy Wiergowski, who works at the Charles V. Park Library, said the library is busiest around exam week. “All of the students are more on edge,” the Brighton sophomore said. “We all get it.” The library will have extended hours for exam week. It will be open from 7:50 a.m. to 1 a.m. today through Wednesday. The library will be open from 7:50 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. The library’s extended hours study room will prolong its hours even further, staying open from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. today and Tuesday and 7 to 2 a.m. Wednesday. Almont junior Kaitlyn Hawald is one student who will
be flooding into the library this week. She said it is helpful to be somewhere with computers all around, and plenty of empty desks. “I like that I have a lot of space to lay all of my papers out, it makes me focus,” she said. The library is not the only place accepting exam studiers. Sara Bohan, who works at University Cup, 102 S. Franklin St., said the coffee shop becomes extremely busy during exam week. “This is a great place to meet for group projects,” she said. The Walled Lake senior said the spacious layout and variety of caffeinated drinks make University Cup a popular stop for exam preparation. University Cup will be open from 7 a.m. to midnight today through Wednesday, and from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Just down the Bellows

Street from University Cup, another coffee shop, Kaya Coffee and Tea Co., 1029 S. University Ave., will be open 24 hours a day through exam week. Chelsea Hohn of the Kaya staff said students have already started pouring in to the shop to study. “It’s relaxing and laid back, where the library is more cold and quiet,” the Grand Blanc sophomore said. Kaya is not the only 24 hour establishment students use to study. Lil’ Chef is also open 24 hours a day, year round. Lil’ Chef waitress Lauren Bottorff said it is common for students to come in late and study. She said they usually come for the hot coffee and relaxing atmosphere. “I don’t mind that they usually just get coffee,” the Ypsilanti senior said. “At night there usually isn’t much going on anyway.” metro@cm-life.com

Survival tips for final exam week By Paulina Lee Staff Reporter
It’s two words that strike fear and stress into college students — finals week. This is the time of year when library space becomes prime real estate and there just doesn’t seem to be enough caffeine to keep students awake. Everyone has their own advice for getting through finals week, including Mount Pleasant senior Vinnie Schiavi. “Sleep well,” he said. “A good night’s rest will keep you relaxed during exams.” Alyssa Dean, a Milford senior, recommended students take advantage of exercise classes at the Student Activity Center. “Go to URec classes at the SAC,” she said. “They are free all next week.” For class schedules, call the SAC at 774-3686, or pick one up there or at residential fitness centers.
Anne Ellis, health coach at Central Michigan Community Hospital’s Health Coach, 1221 South Dr., offered four tips to help students make it through the final week of the semester: 1. Eat well — Ellis said not only does nutrition support the immune system, but it also gives you the energy to operate your mind. “Proper nutrition can really make a difference,” Ellis said. She said breakfast may be the most important meal of day, but it is just as important to eat snacks and several meals throughout the day. “These should be (snacks and meals that are) high in protein and complex carbs, not junk food or sugar,” she said. 2. Exercise — Sweat it out during finals week because exercise is a great stress reliever, Ellis said.

“It helps your body use up all the stress hormones, but also releases endorphins,” she said. “It’ll relax your muscles and clear your mind.” 3. Sleep — Ellis said it is very important to avoid allnighters. “Seven to eight hours are recommended, and research has show that people need sleep,” she said. “(Sleep) keeps your mind sharp, helps you learn and will help you remember better.” 4. Relax — After a long day of studying for finals, Ellis said it is important to take some time to relax and destress before getting a good night’s rest. “Stress management is very important,” she said. Ellis suggested yoga, meditation or prayer, or just connecting with other students in order to unwind. studentlife@cm-life.com

Insist on Open MRI Great news! Now you don’t have to sacrifice your comfort to get the highest image quality. Choose the area's only true Open MRI instead of the old tube routine.
“Open bore” is not really open; it’s a tube!
Comfortable Roomier than any tube, Open MRI is more comfortable and less stressful, especially for claustrophobic patients. It’s open enough to hold your loved one's hand during the procedure.
Convenient At our outpatient clinic, you'll enjoy up-close parking, easy in-and-out and one bill with no hidden fees or hospital charges. Eliminating those hospital fees could save you money.
Super High-Definition High-definition images provide more information for an accurate diagnosis. The open table enables the body part of interest to be centered in the magnetic field for sharper image quality.
Ask your doctor for a referral. Find out more at www.openmrimtpleasant.com or call (855) 777-OPEN.
MMH-4949 | CM Life | 6 Column (11" x 10.5")
Conventional and open bore MRIs can't match the comfort and convenience of the new Open MRI. Ask your doctor for Open MRI Mt. Pleasant.

It’s the
FINAL WEEK! Central Michigan Life’s finals issue
of the fall semester will feature articles about the last week of classes, end of semester and graduation.
This is a great opportunity to wish our Graduates luck,
thank them for supporting your business, serving as an employee, or just letting them and their families know about your graduation specials.
This section will include tips for exam week stress, including things to do on campus and in the community. It will also be filled with mind exercises such as sudoku, word search and crossword puzzles.
Readers will also find information on things to do over Christmas break – CMU and Mt. Pleasant related.
This is a great way to increase your ad’s shelf life
as the paper will be on the rack all week – including Graduation day! A good issue to remind consumers about events and activities during the last week of classes, promote fun things to do to relieve the stress of finals – and offer “FREE” deliveries of your items!
