All of the splendor and excitement of the SMU ceremonies Gretchen directed — including this year’s Commencement ceremonies — are a direct reflection of her enthusiastic and careful planning and involvement. Gretchen C. Voight, a resident of Irving, Texas, died March 23, 2012, after a brief illness. A native of Port Neches, Texas, Gretchen was the elder child of Donna and Ranny Voight. She earned in 2003 a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management from Stephen F. Austin State University. In her first job after college, Gretchen

worked for the City of Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau, first serving as the festival and community promotions coordinator for city events such as the GrapeFest, Main Street Days and Butterfly Flutterby. In 2004, she moved to the Grapevine Heritage Foundation and served as its historic preservation coordinator for several of the city’s preservation and restoration projects, including the Grapevine Depot, Palace Theatre, Nash Farm Capital Campaign and others. She also served as the city’s liaison to the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce, Women’s Division of the Chamber of Commerce, the Joey Wilkins Foundation, Grapevine AMBUCS, Grapevine Elks, Grapevine Garden Club, Tarrant Area Guild of Storytellers, Dallas-Fort Worth Area Tourism Council and the Southwest Bluegrass Club. When Gretchen joined SMU in 2006 as the assistant registrar for academic ceremonies, she continued to demonstrate her characteristic energy and enthusiasm to managing all aspects of SMU’s
five academic ceremonies, including Opening Convo cation, December Graduation, Honors Convoca tion, Baccalaureate Service and Commencement Convocation, as well as other special University events. She immediately became active in SMU’s Staff Association, eventually serving as its president in 2010-2011 and founding its book club in 2011. Gretchen’s coworkers describe her as lighthearted and funny with a generous spirit who enjoyed giving gifts and happily loaning her personal possessions. She was organized, decisive and had great instincts, even for quick decisions. Gretchen’s SMU family embraced her talents early, and after only two years, she received the Presidential Award for New Employee Excellence. Gretchen’s generosity extended to numerous professional organizations and volunteer pursuits where she shared her time and skills as a new member mentor and co-chair of the
2012 annual meeting for the North American Association of Commencement Officers. The Texas Association of College Registrars and Admission Officers awarded her with its President’s Award in 2009, and she served on the organization’s Local Arrangements Committees as Vendors Chair and as the Hospitality Chair, and was TACRAO secretary. She also was involved with the MakeA-Wish Foundation, Dallas area Habitat for Humanity and the Joey Wilkins Foundation. Gretchen is survived by her parents, her sister and brotherin-law, Robyn and Travis Lovett, grandmothers Patricia Stewart and Mary Voight, aunts and uncles, Susan and Jeff Klopfenstein, Mark Voight, Peter and Charlyn Voight, extended family, as well as countless friends who were blessed to know her. Guests with disabilities may park on Binkley, the road adjacent to Moody Coliseum. Guestsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; current state-issued disabled parking placard and license plates are needed to park in this area. Additional parking passes are not needed. Guests with mobility issues riding with family may be dropped off at the Mustang Statue at the corner of Airline Road and Binkley Avenue; no pass needed. No parking will be permitted on Bishop Boulevard. SMU police phone boxes, located on campus, provide immediate access to the police dispatch office, or guests may call 214-768-3388 for 24-hour access to campus police. There is on-campus construction that may close some streets and close-in parking. Please allow extra time.

As you know, in 2011 we celebrated the centennial of the University’s founding, and we continue that commemoration this year, the 100th anniversary of the groundbreaking of Dallas Hall. You are officially a “Centennial Class” at SMU, and your accomplishments add to the distinction of our University during this special time and beyond. Just as your success carries out the hopes and dreams of the University’s founders, so do you provide a foundation of achievement to be emulated by future generations of graduates. Today, however, is your day to shine. The graduating class of 2012 has contributed many special qualities to SMU.
