Print Ads: Keeping it Simple In today’s competitive market, it’s easy to get caught up in trying to make your ads stand out. But sometimes this results in ads that are too busy-- with too many words, too many images, and too much clutter. This can turn a lot of people off to reading your carefully planned and paid for advertisement. Ads should be designed to cut through the clutter, not create it. So what’s the solution? Simplicity. Keeping your ad simple will help it stand out more because it will be more pleasing to the eye as well as easier to read, understand, and remember. An article from an advertising and marketing website, Marketing Minefield, gives several top tips for print advertising, several of which deal with keeping your ad simplified. 1. Use a simple layout. Keeping a simple layout keeps your ad concise and helps it look polished. This can make your ad more visually appealing and draw readers in. It can also focus their attention on the main message of your advertisement. A busy layout with a lot going on can often distract readers from the overall point of your ad, or deter them from even reading it. 2. Focus on one proposition. It is important to focus your ad on one idea, one key message that you want the reader to remember. While you have a lot of great information to get out there, it can be too much to ask readers to remember every detail. Therefore, it is imperative to make your key message

simple and obvious. It is also important to have every other element of your ad working to promote that key message and help it stand out. 3. Use color effectively. Color is a great tool to use for your advertisements. Color ads stand out more amongst the black and white print of the newspaper, and therefore catch more people’s attention. If you have a great picture or image in your ad, try picking colors or accent colors out of that image to also use to color your text. This will help tie your ad together, making it more cohesive and visually appealing. 4. Use the same format and layout again and again. It may seem boring to use the same format and layout for your ads from week to week. However, using the same simple layout can help readers recognize and remember your ads. You can still change the key message of your ad from week to week, but keeping several elements of the ad the same can help continuously keep one image in readers’ minds. This can help readers remember your ad and help you develop a strong brand. Your ultimate goal is Top-Of-Mind-Awareness (TOMA). So remember, when it comes to print advertising, simpler is better. American consumers see an estimated 3,000 advertising messages per day. Creating a clear, concise, and cohesive ad is one way to cut through the clutter and reach your audience effectively.

2012 Fall IDS Housing Fair Wednesday, Nov. 7 • 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. • IMU Frangipani Room Dear Sir or Madam, On Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012 the IDS will be hosting the annual Fall Housing Fair. This is the first fair of the year, with a second fair following on Jan. 30, 2013. We would like to extend an invitation to your organization to gain access to this large student market. Last year’s fall fair attracted more than 1,400 attendees. Representatives from various Bloomington rental properties come to a single on-campus location, providing visitors with useful information through a one-stop experience. Guests walk into a lively atmosphere complete with festive décor, upbeat music, interactive games and frequent prize giveaways at the fair. The IDS would like to invite your business to be a part of this great event, providing your business with fresh visibility to the IU community. Your business can donate a prize to be given away at the event and receive free advertising exposure in return. This opportunity allows the IU campus of more than 42,000 students and 8,200 faculty and staff to view your business in a new light and gives guests the chance to try your products hands-on. Please see the attached pages for more information on the advertising compensation. Thank you for your consideration and we look forward to hearing from you.

SPECIAL ISSUE

We wouldn’t be very patriotic if we didn’t write about who is running for president and who is going to be in our local races. This issue is going to be packed full of candidate profiles, tough political issues, and who we think will be the frontrunners in this year’s election. We have a focus on the football matchup for the weekend, as well as what events will be going on around campus. The Homecoming Issue is a great time to reach out to students and their visiting parents to let them know where to go while here for homecoming. We also have a big alumni bash at Ching Field where we pass out the issue to our alumni. This is a great time of year to reach all the people involved with UH.

THE RO CKY MOUNTAIN

AVE NUE

COLLEGIAN

By Courtney Riley The Rocky Mountain Collegian

Tom Berger, the director of Fort Collins’ Midtown Arts Center’s version of the risque Broadway hit Tony Award winner “Avenue Q,” describes the production as a “Sesame Street for grown-ups.” “There’s Internet porn and full-frontal puppet sex, but at the end of the day, it’s surprisingly sweet, which is one of my favorite parts about the show,” he said. “Seeing the Muppet-style puppets dropping f-bombs and talking about sex and porn is instantly funny. There’s something about that link to our childhood that makes it really fun.”

Junior English major Mandy Rose discovered her love for writing at CSU –– and now, she and other local writers want to spread that love with the community. Last semester, Rose organized and hosted “Evening Without Edit,” a reading held at Avogadro’s Number that showcased numerous talented writers from CSU, as well as local musicians. “I had met all these fantastic writers,” Rose said. “And this is my attempt of something that allows them to give back.” The second “Evening Without Edit” will take place tonight at 7:30 in Avogadro’s Number. It will feature 10 writers, including CSU undergraduates, MFA students and alumni. “Evening Without Edit” is free and open to the public.

Pitch a tent in the library. About .1 percent of campus real estate controls 99 percent of productivity! #occupyolin Seriously, though, competing for desk space in Olin Library

during reading week can be a full contact sport. The best strategy for avoiding battle scars is to stake out your prey. A fitful night’s sleep in Whispers guarantees a desk when the

library opens. You may even poach a study room. If you feel especially brave, suspend a sheet from the stacks in the basement and try to convince the custodians to let you stay.

There’s no time more appropriate than reading week to realize your dream of becoming an expert on African capital cities, the digits of pi, or the logos of various international sports teams. Sporcle, a website

featuring thousands of quizzes ranging across all disciplines, is the Internet’s most educational time sink. During my freshman year, my friends and I memorized all the elements, and most of us weren’t enrolled

in chemistry. Not all the quizzes are so sophisticated or academic. Try naming all the “Harry Potter” characters you can or every three-letter body part—there are ten—or try filling in the blank of famous song titles.

WVU officially joins Big 12 BY NICK ARTHUR

ASSOCIATE SPORTS EDITOR

After months of anticipation, it finally became official Sunday. West Virginia University departed from the Big East Conference to join the Big 12 Conference. Hundreds of Mountaineer athletes, coaches and guests gathered to celebrate the memorable day in institution history. “It’s a great day to be a

Mountaineer in Morgantown,” said newly named Mountaineer Mascot Jonathan Kimble. “All the athletes and coaches have been excited for this for a long time. It’s going to be a great year.” In attendance were not only the athletes and coaches, but also WVU President James P. Clements, Athletic Director Oliver Luck and Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. Luck was the first of the three to address the crowd and feels the Mountaineers

are prepared both academically and athletically to contend in their new conference. “We’re embarking on a big adventure, and we’re going to have a lot of fun doing it,” Luck said. “I feel very comfortable that as we raise the bar for athletic programs at our University that we will be able to compete and compete very well.” President Clements didn’t take long at the podium to compliment Luck on his hard work to help guide the Uni-

versity in the difficult times of conference realignment in collegiate athletics. “How about a round of applause for the best athletic director in the country,” Clements said. With athletics as the main determinant of the destination for universities around the country during realignment, Clements doesn’t feel the other side of the equation should be overlooked. “We’re a partner in athletics, but we’re also a partner in

academics,” he said. “The Big 12 is thrilled to have us. They know we’re a wonderful fit… We will make the Big 12 very proud to have West Virginia as a member.” Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby, who was named to his position in early May, is also new to the Big 12. But, with stints in conferences such as the Big 10 and the Pac-12 as an athletic director, Bowlsby understands what it takes to compete at a high level and realizes the

PART OF THE FAMILY

Mountaineers will have to make adjustments. “We are very excited to have TCU and West Virginia joining this league. You’re joining a very rich heritage, and you bring your own rich heritage along with it,” Bowlsby said. “It isn’t going to be easy. You will find the competition in every sport, on every day, from top to bottom in the league, is first grade.” nicholas.arthur@mail.wvu.edu

A look at WVU’s uniform options

Senior guard Matt Humphrey decided to come to West Virginia after finishing second in scoring at Boston College last season. WVU will be the third school Humphrey has played for during his college career.

There have been a lot of changes with the leadership of West Virginia Athletic Director Oliver Luck and head football coach Dana Holgorsen. Luck has successfully guided the Mountaineers to the Big 12 Conference, while Holgorsen has implemented an explosive “Air Raid” offense. Between West Virginia’s move away from the stagnant Big East Conference and Holgorsen’s new high-flying offense, higherquality recruits beginning to think about joining the WVU football program. One approach Luck and Holgorsen took this season to attract prospects to Morgantown was introducing new gray uniforms. There have also been talks about a complete new line of WVU uniforms next season. “It’s a recruiting thing,” Holgorsen said to the Charleston Daily Mail. “If

Matt Humphrey fitting in at West Virginia BY MICHAEL CARVELLI SPORTS EDITOR

Matt Humphrey is in very exclusive company, but not for anything he’s done on the basketball court. He’s part of a small group of college basketball players to transfer twice during their career. After spending his first two seasons at Oregon, he left for Boston College when head coach Ernie Kent was fired. Humphrey sat out a season before being looked at to lead a young Boston College team that struggled to a 9-22 season. He decided to transfer again shortly after the end of the season. “Transferring is not something that you want to do,” Humphrey said. “It’s not something I was happy about, but I was in two really difficult situations. You just have to do what’s best for you moving forward.” Once he made the decision to leave Boston College, Humphrey began hearing from schools who were interested in adding

him for his final season of eligibility. One of the teams that were on the 6-foot-5 guard, who was eligible to play immediately after completing his undergraduate degree at Boston College last season, was West Virginia. “You do your homework on schools. You’re not going to be interested in a school where you might not have an opportunity to

play, but you have to understand that there are guys who have been there, performed well and earned their right to play next year,” Humphrey said. “There’s an opportunity here to make an impact right away. We’ve got some young guys, and they definitely need some more experience, and I just appreciate them coming after me and giving me the opportu-
