LSU Best Sales Increase of a Special Section STRATEGIES: • Overall, our special section numbers were down for special publications • We encouraged ANY client who received a vote to purchase an ad – this information was shared by the marketing team with the sales team • The entire list of votes was shared with the sales staff & they split up the entire list to ensure all votes were called on for ad space to say “Thanks for voting for us” • Therefore, 2012’s Guide received special sales focus and an individual flier to promote sales with clients • We offered advertisers in this publication incentives for the regular paper, to encourage anyone and everyone to buy an ad – it would save them money! • Sales initiatives were also used to encourage sales – Individual goal: • Meet goal, earn 20% on sales for the guide.

– Team goal: • Beat goal, and entire team earns 20% on all sales for the guide • Progress “thermometer” posted on wall to track progress!

Best Sales Increase of a Special Section This year, Vidette Marketing Consultants successfully sold the Rental Guide increasing 2011 sales from $11,441.03 to 2012 sales of $13,046.19, a percentage increase of 14.03%. The Vidette did not increase the rates, but instead we branded the Rental Guide as an opportunity to better communicate with Illinois State students. Through sales strategies, marketing initiatives, and team motivation, the sales staff was able to increase previous year sales. One of the Vidette’s Team Leaders led the sales efforts for both the Rental Guide and the Homecoming Guide. One of the challenges for the staff is that realty companies start their open leasing usually during the last week of September or the first week in October. One of the main points that was stressed to the staff was to visit clients early and to sell this special issue early. Because of this, the staff sold the two guides as a bundle. If an advertiser ran in the Rental Guide, they would get 20% off their advertisement in the Homecoming Guide. This encouraged Vidette clients to run campaigns more frequently. In addition, because of the sales strategy, the Homecoming Guide increased in sales from 2011 at $7,557.51 to 2012 sales at $8,136.40, a percentage increase of 7.66%. Because the sales staff was able to exceed quota for both special issues, each staff member was rewarded monetarily with bonuses and points. Another large aspect of the success of the Rental Guide was the teamwork. The three teams had separate quotas to achieve monetary bonuses if the quotas were exceeded. This encouraged the team members to work collectively. The board was decorated where each team had their own house that would fill with furniture after x amount of sales. The 2011 Rental Guide marketing initiatives included Vidette staff members handing out 500 extra copies of the Rental Guide at high-traffic locations. While this can be effective, the 2012 marketing initiative was what enticed the majority of the advertisers to increase their spending on the Rental Guide. As a student, it can be difficult to choose an off-campus house or apartment, so The Vidette wanted to provide the Illinois State community with the information that they needed to aid in their decision. The marketing initiatives involved face-to-face market interaction and digital availability. If a realty company ran a print advertisement in the Rental Guide, that business was able to sponsor a golf cart for $100/hour. The Vidette Street Team drove a 6-passenger golf cart while handing out Rental Guides to students on campus. By sponsoring the golf cart, the realty companies were able to allow one representative to answer any housing questions while giving away freebies to students. Students enjoyed getting a ride to class while learning more about off-campus housing opportunities. In addition, The Vidette made the Rental Guide available online at our website, videtteonline.com in case a student did not pick up a copy in time. Since this guide, realty companies continue to advertise and ask about when The Vidette will have another golf cart marketing opportunity.

BIRDHOUSE RENTALS

A STUDENT’S GUIDE TO HOUSING OPTIONS AT ILLINOIS STATE UNIVERSITY

ABOUT

MARKETING PLAN

After living in the dorms for a couple years, most students are eager to find a place of their own. Signing a lease on an apartment or house is an exciting time, but with so many options, the search for the best apartment can be difficult. Birdhouse Rental is a helpful tool for students to use throughout the leasing process to find a home away from home.

· Will be distributed with the newspaper on September 29th and at Illinois State’s Off Campus Housing Fair. · Daily Vidette employees will also be distributing an extra 500 copies by hand throughout the week of open leasing. · Promotion of Birdhouse Rentals will take place throughout Septemeber through house ads.

BEST SALES INCREASE OF A SPECIAL SECTION Entry 4d.

INTRODUCTION The Minnesota Daily produces a satirical publication to provide much needed comic relief to University of Minnesota students and faculty during finals week at the end of the fall semester. The Fall Finals publication in 2011 generated $9,963. During the fall of 2012, the Fall Finals publication saw a 103.38% increase in revenue with the final number topping $20,313.

At the end of every semester, The Minnesota Daily Sales Department lacks motivation

to continue to sell and work hard as the stress and demands of academia are significantly increased. This is problematic because of the nature of the Fall Finals publication. The Fall Finals publication is a special issue which attracts a very high percentage of our audience and our advertisers. The Fall Finals publication attracts advertisers of every nature whether it’s retail establishments promoting their holiday sales, ski resorts looking to attract students with free time over the break, or bars looking to attract students celebrating the end of the semester. The

IMPLEMENTING A SOLUTION To prevent a fall out among the Marketing Consultants, the MN Daily sales management made their expectations during the last few weeks of the semester very clear by implementing a series of trackers. Sales Managers asked each rep to record and track their cold calls, meetings, and the number of hours spent in the office per week. Failure to meet the expectation set by the Sales Managers would result in a written warning with three written warnings qualifying an employee for termination. The trackers were turned in on a weekly basis to monitor the progress of the Marketing Consultants and their progress and effort increased dramatically. Over $13k of the revenue generated by the 2012 Fall Finals publication was from a client which wasn’t in the 2011 Fall Finals publication and just over $6,600 of that revenue was New Client.

CONCLUSION Feedback from Marketing Consultants regarding the series of trackers was nothing but positive. Many Marketing Consultants commented on the increase of sales people in the office and the duration of time spent in the office by their colleagues. The less organized Marketing Consultants also commented fondly on the cold calling tracker which kept them more organized with respect to prospecting. With this tracker they were able to keep track of when they called a prospective client and what interaction occurred.

Overall, the feedback and revenue increases resulting from implementation of the trackers was

so positive that the trackers will be used in our sales department throughout the rest of the year and well into the future. Having clear expectations for the Marketing Consultants is key to ensuring the success of publications and also the success of reps in their sales careers with The Minnesota Daily.

CNBAM 2013 4d Best Sales Increase of a Special Section The Standard – Missouri State University Sales for our annual Basketball Preview tabloid special section were up 83% in 2012 compared with 2011. We accomplished this by selling Basketball Preview in a package with our Homecoming special section. We marketed the package to clients as a “Sports Special.” Because these two tabloids run within a few weeks of each other, clients will advertise in either Homecoming or Basketball Preview, but not both. We wanted to change that. The Sports Special offer was “Buy One Ad/Get One Half Price” (for the same size ad). For example, a half-page color ad is regularly $300, but a client who signed up for the sports special got a half-page color ad in Homecoming and a half-page color ad in Basketball Preview for $450, instead of $600. They saved $150 on the package. The revenue was booked as $225 in Homecoming and $225 in Basketball, which helped even out commission for our ad reps. Essentially, we were discounting both Homecoming and Basketball by 25% for clients who bought both issues. Presenting it as a “Buy One/Get One Half Price” offer was client-friendly, and got them into both issues, which was our goal. (FYI, sales for the Homecoming 2012 tabloid were up 6.2% from 2011, even with the package discount. Sales were $4015, compared with non-discounted sales for Homecoming 2011, which were $3780. Other than this package deal, our special section prices did not change from 2011 to 2012.) Packaging Basketball Preview with Homecoming created several advantages for us. First, we started selling Basketball Preview several weeks earlier than normal, rather than waiting until after the Homecoming tab. Second, it make efficient use of our ad

reps’ time, because they only had to make one pass through most of their clients to sell both issues. Third, it helped streamline ad production, because many clients ran the same ad in Basketball Preview as they did in the Homecoming tab. And fourth, our clients were happy because they got exposure in two issues, and they saved money. After the Homecoming tab went to print, we continued to sell Basketball Preview to clients that did not run in the Homecoming tab, and the rate card no longer reflected the “sports special” offer. Overall, the package deal paid off for us. Offering the Sports Special discount increased revenue for both Homecoming and Basketball Preview. It changed the buying pattern of our clients, and now we have a bigger client list for both tabloids, which we an use to boost sales next year, too.

The University Daily Kansan Category 4d: Best Sales increase of a Special Section Ever since 2008 The University Daily Kansan has published an annual “Top of the Hill” special section which recognizes the best businesses in Lawrence, Kansas as voted on by the students at The University of Kansas. This section has seen challenges in recent years as revenue has been dropping by an average of nearly 10% per year for the last two years. To counter this momentum the staff of The Kansan made many adjustments to how the product was sold, how the votes were submitted and finally to the actual content of the section itself. All in all these changes resulted in a sales increase this year of 33% over the previous year. To start with we looked at how we got the actual votes on the section. In past years we had done the voting only through paper ballots which were either handed out and collected on campus by Kansan staff members or returned from a ballot that ran as a house ad in our paper. As the years progressed we also saw a steady decline in voting as students who were used to programs like Survey Monkey chose not to vote on paper ballots seemed to preferring instead a digital only option. There were also allegations of vote stuffing by some local businesses who allegedly would send employees out (many of which were not students) to fill out as many ballots as possible so that their business would win the vote. These allegations threw doubt onto the validity of the awards themselves and in the process negatively affected not only the enthusiasm of our advertisers for this section but our account executives as well. To counter all of this our student web designer Tim Shedor created a digital ballot with close to 10 pre-‐selected businesses for each of the ballot’s 37 separate categories. Tim also made sure to include a feature where students could write-‐in choices that were not in the 10 pre-‐selected options. To ensure though that these votes would be only from the students and staff of The University of Kansas Tim wrote a digital script into the ballot that only allowed a user to vote if they had a valid ku.edu e-‐mail account. In addition the script allowed each user to vote only once and in the process this successfully countered the vote stuffing allegations. To encourage as many votes as possible we ran two straight weeks worth of half-‐page ads in our paper, accompanied by digital ads on our web site and a massive social media blitz that covered not only all of The Kansan’s social media accounts but also as many of its staff members as possible. All of these marketing efforts featured the url that led users to vote on-‐line. As a final carrot to dangle in front of our users we offered a $100 Visa gift card that would be given away in a drawing. All one had to do to qualify was completely fill out on-‐line a Top of the Hill ballot. In the end these efforts were a success drawing in over 13,000 separate votes for the 37 categories which was a dramatic increase from the last few years. We next worked with editorial to improve the product itself. In recent years the issue itself had featured virtually no write-‐ups of any of the businesses but instead just a photo of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner for each category. We worked with

editor Ian Cummings who assured us that each 1st place winner would at minimum receive a one paragraph write-‐up on what it was that made their business one of the best in the city of Lawrence. To help him do this though we moved the deadline for voting back one week earlier than normal to ensure that his special section correspondents had adequate time to do these write-‐ups. In addition to ensuring a higher quality product getting the votes in earlier gave our staff more time to sell as we had a list of the top 3 finalists in each category. Next we worked on increasing the motivation of our staff to sell this product. Our sales efforts began in mid October which was right when we needed to see an uptick in sales as for the month of September we had fallen to 68% of the previous year due to low national sales and churn from several large local accounts. To help inject energy into the staff we decided to purchase nearly $500 worth of prizes to be raffled off but also made available no-‐cost prizes such as “The Student Business Manager will wash your car”, “The Sales and Marketing Adviser will be your Sales Slave for a day”. We announced that we would raffle off these prizes at our final staff meeting on Wednesday December 5th. In order to earn tickets for the raffle each account executive had to complete a series of tasks that would help move our organization forward in the right direction such as taking their manager on a call with them or selling a digital bundle. Amongst these tasks we also included selling a new business into one of our products as well as selling into any special section including Top of the Hill. Thus if an account executive sold a new business into Top of the Hill then they would earn two separate raffle tickets. To aid them in this we took the complete list of the top 3 finalists for Top of the Hill by each category and assigned all un-‐assigned accounts to account executives to contact immediately regarding how they had finished in the vote and asking if they would like to purchase an ad for the section. And finally we made the product attractive to as many of our advertisers as possible. We obtained permission from local apartment complexes who allowed us to hang nearly 3,000 copies of this issue on their doors and in the process allow us to offer expanded distribution to our advertisers in addition to our normal daily distribution of 11,000. We also offered a 25% discount to any business who had not run with us in the last year but who had placed in the top 3 of Top of the Hill. In doing this we wanted to use Top of the Hill as a gateway to bring as many new businesses as possible into other Kansan products in the 4th quarter. All in all the elements we described here added up to success. Top of the Hill for 2012 saw a sales increase of 33% from the previous year. More importantly though the incentives that were built around its sales to increase staff motivation as a whole allowed us to finish even with the previous year for October-‐December after our aforementioned disastrous finish for the month of September. Not only do we hope to build off of this year’s success with “Top of the Hill” in next year’s edition but we hope to ride out the wave of momentum into the Spring 2013 semester as well.
