To Whom It May Concern, It is a distinct honor to recommend Angela Carollo, Advertising Manager at the Grand Valley Lanthorn, for advertising manager of the year. I can say with confidence that Angela’s work ethic, experience, and passion qualify her as a fantastic candidate. Angela has trained myself, as well as the remaining account executives on the staff, and has prepared us extremely well for the position as well as future careers. She has always brought insight to each and every client she has worked with as well as challenged her employees to go above and beyond the call to action. Angela has been working for the Lanthorn since September 2011, and has held the Advertising Manager position since April of 2012. She has transformed the development of the Lanthorn since her start at the student ran publication. Form integrated marketing to data comparison; she is always thinking critically for the better of her employees, clients and the Lanthorn. Angela sets goals for the team, has one-on-one meetings with each individual employee and is always finding new ways to engage students of the Grand Valley with both the Lanthorn and businesses outside the Grand Valley community. Angela also takes initiative in other aspects of her college career; she is the account executive for her national student advertising competition class. She applies the skills she has learned throughout her education both inside the classroom as well as at her job to make for a better-understood and engaged learning environment. Angela’s high level of involvement, commitment and interactive employee relations is what makes her stand out amongst the rest. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Sincerely, MARISSA WINTER ASSISTNAT ADVERTISING MANAGER, GRAND VALLEY LANTHORN MWINTER@LANTHORN.COM (616) 331-2462

January 25, 2014 College Newspaper Business &Advertising Managers Advertising Manager of the Year Contest To Whom It May Concern: I support Angela Carollo as Advertising Manager of the Year. She is currently advertising manager of the Grand Valley Lanthorn, a student-run, twice-weekly print newspaper with online/mobile components. What is distinctive about her management this year is the extent she has strengthened the advertising department’s focus beyond basic “sales” into a modern, flexible strategic plan for future staff efforts. She has been instrumental in keeping the Lanthorn relevant to advertisers. She has accomplished this while being a full-time student and a part-time manager. In addition, The Lanthorn’s faculty adviser is only part-time and time is split between editorial and business issues. So, Angela’s time commitment and dedication is extraordinary. And she has found time to become involved as a student representative for CNBAM. Angela is a true leader and innovator. One example of this has been her strategy of interconnecting multimedia sales campaigns with marketing and “branding” promotions, both for clients and for the Lanthorn. She has recruited and trained additional part-time staff for this, and it is working. In addition, she guides advertising layout personnel and works with the business manager to ensure accurate billing. Her staff has earned state and national awards through the Michigan Press Association and the Associated Collegiate Press associations, and that reflects on her leadership. Finally, Angela is a very personable individual with a great sense of humor. Please contact me if you have questions or need clarification. Best, Lawrence Beery Associate Professor, School of Communications Faculty Editorial/Business Adviser, Grand Valley Lanthorn Grand Valley State University Allendale, MI 49401 beeryl@gvsu.edu and 616-331-3512

STATEMENT OF MANAGEMENT PHILOSOPHY Maybe it’s because I played sports. Maybe it’s because I grew up with a lot of kids in one house. Maybe it’s something completely different or maybe it’s a combination of all three. Whatever it was shaped me into someone who finds personal success by helping others find success. Being apart of something much larger than my individual self is so much more powerful and satisfying than experiencing it alone. This is why I made it my goal to revolutionize the newspaper and make students proud of working for the Grand Valley Lanthorn. I wanted them to experience this feeling of success and belonging while also feeling prepared for their futures. I believed that if I could make the individuals who made up our paper stronger by showing interest in their personal growth, then we could make the paper itself stronger as a result. So, I started by making a list of rules to become a better leader for my team: 1. Listen and Understand – I will give my staff members the opportunity to share their ideas and opinions as well as listen to any criticisms to better improve their experience here and get them to where they want to be by the end of their term. 2. Encourage – I will give my staff members positive feedback and show them where they can improve so they have a reputation to live up to, not so they feel unappreciated and insecure. I will make sure they feel good about their progress, even if they don’t see results immediately. 3. Be Transparent – I will let my staff know exactly what is expected of them before they are hired and make sure they feel comfortable in that position. I will create new tracking/evaluating forms to give them actual data of their performance trends so they can see their progress and include statistics in their portfolios. I will answer any and all appropriate questions so they don’t feel like they’re in the dark. 4. Lead by Example – I will only ask my staff to do things that I have or will do also. I will make sure I work in the same way that I ask my staff to work. For example, I will continually improve on my skills and ask for feedback so they will want to do the same for themselves. 5. Provide an Experience – I will understand what my staff wants out of working at the newspaper and make it my duty to provide them with the best experience possible to get them there. I will invest time in expanding my knowledge in different aspects of the business so I can provide better insight and work with them to improve their skills. When my staff isn’t sure what to do, I will ask them what they think they should do first and then provide my recommendation to help them think critically. I held true to these rules at the start of my first year managing in 2012 and made many significant changes. Come 2013, however, I wanted to add something to my list and go beyond what I had originally intended: 6. Remember – I will take time to remember where I was and what I promised to do so I never lose sight of my commitment to my team, my clients and the Grand Valley Lanthorn. This is why the first thing I did differently in 2013 was have all of my staff members write what they wanted to accomplish through working at the newspaper, what they wanted to do afterwards, and how they planned to make a difference. Then I asked them to put it in a place they and I can both see everyday so we will always remember why we are here. Mine (I had to do one because of rule #4) says: “Strengthen my leadership skills as well as gain a deeper understand of the marketing mix and how to make it better. [Become] a marketing manager for
one company or advertising/promotions consultant. Listen to others and respond positively – working with others to reach their dreams.” I followed through with having one-on-one meetings every two weeks in addition to our normal staff meeting every week (rule #1). During these times especially, I would provide positive feedback (rule #2) and allow them the chance to speak their mind freely (rule #3). I introduced a Weekly Agenda form that allowed them to manage their time more efficiently and allowed me to get an idea of how I can help them finds ways to improve. I also added a workshop session every other week to help them develop their skills. During these sessions, I would prepare materials to give them practice with topics such as how to improve designing layouts, how to handle objections and how to master the dreaded cold call. Furthermore, we took turns sharing different articles in the advertising industry to improve our knowledge outside of the office. We even had a field trip to Lansing’s Michigan Press Associate conference to learn more from professionals (rule #5). After investing a great deal of time and effort with my staff, my confidence in innovating our actual products and operations of our business grew. This is because the team was so much more excited than ever before to do something great, such as build up our Lanthorn brand. Internally, we became more modern (my experience with spreadsheets especially helped with this). Paper insertion logs with pencil smears became Google Docs that could be accessed anywhere. Paystubs that got lost in folders and took extra time to calculate became anther Google Doc with formulas to make evaluating performance easy. We didn’t know which products were doing best, so I created a Revenue Streams documents for comparison. We didn’t know where money was coming from, so I started a Client Comparison document to measure different categories such as agencies and housing companies. We didn’t have an easy way of evaluating the performance of our staff members, so I set up an Income vs. Outcomes document breaking down each members performance all the way to the averages per hour. We didn’t even have a promotions or marketing department. So, I worked with the other managers until it became a reality, spent time training them and then set up a proper reporting structure to measure the success of the addition to our team. Externally, we became more professional and worked with clients as partners, not sellers. For example, I notice large categories of clients we weren’t reaching out to, so I created new guides such as the Food Guide, Bus Route Guide and Car Care Guide to offer them an opportunity to connect with the Grand Valley community. These guides created leverage for our clients and had longer newsstand exposure so they were willing to invest. We also reached out and formed a stronger partnership with athletics and were able to bring a special edition broadsheet for the basketball games. We were even able to target hotels by trying something new and offering space on the back of our graduation flyers we sent home to parents. We weren’t afraid to ask clients about how they thought things were going for their business because we were committed to find ways to make it work. Looking back now from where we were to where we are, it’s safe to say that the Grand Valley Lanthorn is a completely different brand for the better. It’s something that has grown with our team, my coworkers and even our clients. It’s something that has revolutionized our lives all because of what we were willing to do together. At the end of the day, I know some of my coworkers and I have put more effort into this business than we have anything else in our lives. I’m glad I stuck to my leadership rules because they actually worked; and I’m so proud of the legacy we’re leaving behind.
