From being shy to being the team’s leading scorer, a lot has changed for junior point guard Laila Suleiman and the women’s basketball team as their season continues. Suleiman leads the team in scoring and assists averaging 9.1 points per game and 2.6 assists per game and is the only player to start in all 19 games this season. She is also ranked 19th in the conference in average points scored, averaging 11.1 points per game. Originally from Yukon, Okla., Suleiman has played basketball since she was 5 years old. The 5-foot-3 guard attended Yukon High School and Redlands Community College in Oklahoma when UTA head coach Samantha Morrow contacted her. “Her ability to push the ball, ability to shoot 3-pointers and being unselfish made her stand out to me, Morrow said. “But it was mainly how competitive she was caught my attention the most. Suleiman admitted she was a little shy at first when being with the team but instantly became friends with fellow teammate and freshman guard Jordan Holub. Holub said that being the same height as Suleiman and both having a passion for the sport that they play brought them closer together. “I really didn’t know how to approach her at first, because she was really shy so I would feel like I was asking her 20 questions, Holub said. “Once we started playing together, we started gaining chemistry because we play so alike and shooting in the gym all the time and we just became friends.

Junior guard Laila Suleiman leads the Mavericks in scoring for the spring semester. The Mavericks will face off with Louisiana Tech on Saturday at the College Park Center.
Suleiman expressed that the transition between playing for a community college to Division I school has been difficult. “The pace is a lot faster and more aggressive at UTA than at Redlands, Suleiman said, “I am very competitive so I like the challenge of playing here. Holub and senior guard Kiara Parker agreed that Suleiman is hard on herself after losses and expressed that it’s not just her fault but takes a team effort in the outcome of a game. “She tends to blame it on herself being a point guard, but she knows that she has a contribution to the team, Holub
said. Parker said that Suleiman’s leadership role has changed drastically since being with the team, but emphasized that Suleiman has welcomed the challenge with open arms. “It took her a while because of her being so new and adjusting to playing for a community college to a university, Parker said. “She was still trying to figure out how to mesh with the rest of the team but she grows every day and stepped up to the plate and not afraid to speak her mind. @KILLAKEV41 kluong@mavs.uta.edu
With only one season to serve out west, UTA men’s and women’s tennis teams look to ace their Western Athletic Conference rivals. Despite playing in the WAC for only one season, head coach Diego Benitez said his team’s mentality would not be affected on the courts. “We know that we’re only going to be in the WAC for one year, but that doesn’t matter. Whatever we are playing, whatever the name of the conference is, we’re just going in for a win, Benitez said. The women’s team will compete against eight nationally-ranked teams, and four of these games are at home. Seven of UTA’s nine opponents posted winning records last season in the WAC, and the Mavericks will be hosting three of those opponents this season. One of those opponents, University of Idaho, went 19-8 last season, which included notable wins against Brigham Young University and Gonzaga University. “There are going to be great matches., some of those big-ranked teams we have beaten in the past or got very close. It’s not intimidating at all, just a good challenge, economics junior Giada D’ortona said. D’ortona had several strong outings last season for the Mavericks and advanced to the final rounds at the Kansas and Rice Invitationals. She also emphasized the importance of
WOMEN’S HOME OPENER VS. OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY SUNDAY having good team chemistry so the players will perform better. “We have come along a lot as a team, and that is very important. We need to be together as a team overall, especially to face the big challenges. It’s a big thing, D’ortona said. “We’re all playing pretty good and everyone should be ready. The women’s team went 12-8 overall and 7-1 at home last year and will be hosting eight of its 11 matches this season at home. The Mavericks lost against Stephen F. Austin University in the Southland Conference Championship to end last season. The team will open its 2013 campaign against Old Dominion University at home Sunday. The men’s team opened its season with a tough loss against Texas Christian University Friday night, but Benitez said he liked what he saw from his players, and the score did not reflect how competitive the matches really were. “They actually played a pretty good match, Benitez said. “I don’t think that the 7-0 score represents what really went down there. We gave them a big fight. The men did not win a single match against the Horned Frogs but will have two weeks to prepare for their next opponent. Benitez said the team
is still experimenting with possible doubles matchups and will continue to examine specific pairs for the next couple of opponents. “I was surprised that I played so well because it was a tough match, but still I hope I will get better, information systems senior Yauheni Yakauleu said. “There’s a lot of work to do. Yakauleu advanced to the semifinals in the consolation round at the Baylor Invitational last season and picked up several key victories throughout the fall. The men’s team went 10-12 in the Southland Conference last season and lost to Nicholls State in the first round of the conference tournament. Two of its 10 wins came against WAC rivals New Mexico State and UT-San Antonio. The men defended home court well last season and finished with a 6-5 record. “We just have to work extra. Just being together, pushing each other, Yakauleu said. The men will take the courts again Feb. 8 when they open a two-game home stand against Centenary College and Cameron University. @GRIZZY_GRANT grant.Mckinley@mavs.uta.edu
