The Latter-Day Knight
Paul Strickland, Contributor The creatively anachronistic knight rode his reliable, eight-year-old steed south from Skiff, getting across Etzikom Coulee just before a dragon that suddenly appeared from the west could chase him down. The knight rode past fields farmers were spraying with Furan to try to stop a massive invasion of grasshoppers.

Miss Teen Northern BC
Sonja Olsson, Contributor I first found out about the Miss Teen Canada-World pageant a few years ago, and after a few of my friends had competed and gone to nationals, I decided to give it a shot. I thought it would be right up my alley; I’m very girly and am interested in the whole industry of fashion, hair, makeup and modeling. The truth is, it’s so much more. I soon realized that pageantry wasn’t so much about the glitz and glamour, but being the best you can be and bringing out the best in others. Also an important piece to a pageant is your platform; the cause you stand for, which you are to promote thorough whichever means. (volunteering, fundraising, rallies, etc.)
The Confluence - Culture
To get to where I am now hasn’t been easy. After having sent in forms, applications and photos, I had an interview with the director, after which I was told I was eligible to compete in provincials this last February. The provincial competition was two long days of rehearsals, practicing walks and turns, sore feet and meeting wonderful girls. The night of the competition, 12 of the 24 girls were crowned and given titles. Each girls’ title is specific to her region and they all spend a week in July competing for the national crown and title of Miss Teen CanadaWorld.
Page 5
The pageant has already gotten me out in the community in ways I would never have had reason to before. Not only am I asking for the help and support of businesses in Prince George, but I’m also finding ways to be active in events around town, as well as integrate my platform (to raise awareness for poverty in developed countries) in the volunteer work that I do.

A focal point in scoring is fundraising. The MTC-W pageant joins with Free the Children, a Canadian based foundation which fights for the rights of children. Each girl going to nationals is to raise a minimum of $400 however they choose to do so. So far I have had a bake sale and am planning a silent auction for June. I really enjoy raising money. Not only because it’s a great cause, but it’s a great way to connect with my supporters on a more personal level. I’ve found that when it comes to fundraising, the people of Prince George come together and go the extra mile, and that makes it so much more special.
I am very proud to be representing Prince George as Miss Teen Northern BC 2013. This town is a great community that has given me so much growing up and I can’t think of a better way to give back. To follow my journey as Miss Teen Northern British Columbia 2013, you can like me on Facebook (Miss Teen Northern British Columbia 2013), follow me on Twitter (MissTeenNBC) and read my blog at: www.missteennorthernbritishcolumbia. com

To prepare for nationals, I have been treated wonderfully by the ladies at Core Spa & Salon, as well as Urban Tan, two of my ongoing sponsors throughout the pageant. Over the course of the national competition, we will do sightseeing, as well as rehearsals for the big night. We will each be judged on:

Andy Johnson, Editor-In-Chief Back in 2007, I was working as a supervisor at one of the newer restaurant chains in town. The job was nothing special, mostly directing strings of menial tasks of high school and university students and occasionally cooking. While the job may have been soul-crushing, at least I enjoyed the company of my coworkers, especially when the buxom 17 year old hostess, Melissa, was on shift. There was definitely chemistry between us, but out tension always seemed a little awkward whenever we worked together. Undoubtedly this had to do with the 6 “Whatcha looking for, James?” I took a year age gap between us. As we walked up to Melissa’s house, it seemed lonely and isolated. This impression came mostly from the leafless poplars that littered the newly zoned sub-division. The house itself appeared to have three levels with the peak of the third level jutting out of the peak of the second level. The dusty shale coloured concrete contrasted nicely with the dark royal blue of the sky dotted immensely by stars common to northern summer nights.
Melissa and I eventually ended up in conversation. She told me how excited she was to finally be finished high school and that she planned to enroll into the Social Work program at the local university in the fall. Roughly fifteen minutes into our conversation, I had to piss. She told me that I could use the upstairs bathroom and that she may have to follow me in a few minutes. I thanked her and went inside. On my way upstairs, a few more co-workers walked into Melissa’s house. I greeted them and told them that I would be right back, then headed upstairs.
Page 8
When Mac, James and I got inside, we were greeted by two more co-workers, Jacob and Mary, who were making their way upstairs, probably to a guest room. I noticed that the interior of the house was fairly open, the dining room opened up immediately to the left of the front door and a small closet was beside the staircase Jacob and Mary had disappeared up. There were two short walls that opened up in the middle and the sliding glass doors to the deck and backyard could be seen. Mac and I headed to the deck, while James made his way to the kitchen to mix a Coke and Crown. Once outside, Mac and I cracked a couple of beers and began to mingle with our co-workers.

June 18th 2013 The upstairs of Melissa’s house was a lot narrower than I had initially thought from the open floor plan of the downstairs. To my right I could hear the moaning of the co-workers who had greeted Mac, James and I as we walked in. I turned left and began heading down the hall. I noticed that there was an office at the end of the hall, the interior walls were panels of glass and the hallway had a break as if there was another hallway. This piqued my interest and I walked past the open bathroom door on my left.
bright green with the tears streaking her face. She just stood there, looking up at me, her hands tucked behind her back. As she looked into my eyes, a smile crossed her face. Her stare was penetrating, looking right through me as if I wasn’t standing there.
Mid piss, I heard a faint sobbing. At first I thought Jacob and Mary may have gotten a bit too rough, but when I left the bathroom and got closer to the room they were in all I heard was the sound of slapping flesh and delighted moans through the door; the sobbing was also noticeably quieter.
The girl thrust her arm forward and buried the scissors into her right eye. I puked. My vomit landed on the glass and blurred the girl behind the glass who was now twisting the scissors further into her eye socket. I turned to get away, I would have ran, but my rubbery legs only allowed me to hobble away from the grotesque scene.

After a few moments, the girl tilted her head to the right and began bringing her hands forward from behind her back. I noticed that she was holding something in her left hand: a pair of those old iron scissors, the kind with the black-painted As I walked closer to the office, I noticed handles, looking brand new and shiny. that the short hallway was only to allow Her right hand hung by her side as she access to the office door. I walked back down to the end of the hall, stopping at every door to listen for a moment before continuing on. When I reached the office, the figure I had thought was a dog under a red blanket was still under the desk.

That’s when the laughing started. Not some evil, deep-booming cackle or anything; it was the giggling a little girl would make when talking to her teddy bears at a tea party. Pulling myself along the walls of the upstairs corridor, I could As I looked closer through the glass wall, hear the laughing until I reached the stairs. I realized that what I mistook for a dog under a red blanket was actually a girl I fell down the stairs. That giggling, that about 3 years old in a red dress. She was in the office upstairs.” I cupped my head in my hands, still a quivering wreck. Melissa and James headed upstairs; of course, there wasn’t anything in the hall except for my vomit, which had streaked down the glass wall of the office. They told me I had just drank too much and didn’t have enough time to make it to the bathroom. If that were the case, I could have lived with embarrassment for the few weeks it takes for people to forget about it.
