Andy Johnson will be leaving The Confluence next month to start a new job in Salmon Arm. He and I have been working together on The Confluence from the beginning of its current incarnation to the present. It’s with a heavy heart that I wish him luck in his new position.

A friend of mine has started a Prince George Film Society that will be doing screenings at the university. Films with a popular, cultural or cult signifigance will be screened on a, if all goes well, regular basis.

Bye Andy

Andy has always been the face of The Confluence, whether it be reporting, writing or stirring up trouble. Most of our contributors dealt with him first, and then later when it came time for editing submissions. The lion’s share of our opinion pieces were his writing, and he wasn’t afraid to stir up a little controversy if he believed his cause was just. Leaving, things will probably get quieter, but less interesting, guess it’s up to me to take up his muckraking torch.

Page 1

The Confluence - News

From mid-July onwards, I will be assuming most of his duties as Editor in Chief along with a potentially expanded role with the student’s union. I expect we will be recruiting a new editor or journalist position in the fall, but I will be flying solo for the next little while.

Andy Johnson, Editor-in-Chief

The first screening will be July 19th at 6pm in the Weldwood Theatre at UNBC, and will be a triple-feature of the original two Evil Dead films and Army of Darkness. It will be an 18+ show due to the ratings on the films. The three films have a substantial cult following, and are perfect examples of low-to-shoestring budget filmaking. The films launched the careers of Sam Raimi, who recently directed “Oz the Great and Powerful” for Disney, and Bruce Campbell who has had a long and sucessful B-list acting career.

Want $20? The Confluence is actively seeking submissions for biweekly publication. Submissions are ongoing, so if you have news, opinion, short stories, poetry, comics, pictures or anything else you would like to see in the paper, send them to us and we will pay you $20 for a published submission. Parks and Recreation

Andrea Sparks, Contributor. Friday June 21st was the first day of summer. The change of seasons brought many other changes with it. The sun has been shining and warm. The mosquitoes are coming out in full force. Students across all ages are escaping classrooms, trading pencils for playgrounds and homework for holidays. Summer jobs are being worked, and relaxation time is taken outside rather than in front of a fireplace. So what does one do with the longer days, warmer weather, and extra free time?

The Confluence - Culture

Luckily we happen to live in Prince George. This town is a central hub for a plethora of indoor and outdoor activities through all the seasons. Some of these are well known hot spots while others are hidden gems. The list of stuff to do is quite extensive, so get out your calendar and start planning your weekends (weather dependant, of course!). For the outdoor enthusiasts, you can stay local or go beyond city limits. There seems to be something for everyone. Local parks allow for everything from basking in the sun to playing Frisbee to walking through overgrown cottonwood tree parks. Check out Fort George Park for a beautiful, wellmaintained park that all ages can enjoy. This park includes a water park for the young ones, lots of grassy green space for all ages, ball diamonds, sand volleyball, Exploration Place, and a walking path along the river. This park is also home to sacred First Nations grounds including the historic Native Cemetery. L.C. Gunn Park, just across the river is a fantastic hiking trail for people of all skill levels. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring a bottle of water. Behind the University of Northern British Columbia is the famous Forests for the World. Bring a lunch and hang out at Shane Lake, or bring the dog and walk over 15 kilometres of trails. Bring bug spray! For more information on local parks within the City of Prince George, check out: princegeorge.ca/ cityliving/parks.

Page 3

For a taste of something a little further out of town, hop in your car and drive in any direction. Going south, there are multiple locations you can stop at. For overnight camping, head down the Willow-Cale Forest Service Road to check out Buckhorn Lake, Francis Lake,

Andrea Sparks Examines all the Things to do in Prince George This Summer St Marie’s Lake, plus many more. Most of these sites are forestry camp sites, so be sure to be prepared for basic amenities. Of course, be bear-aware, don’t store any food in your tent, be sure your fires are extinguished, and camp safely. Going east of town brings out many campsites as well as day-use areas and hiking trails. Most people from Prince George will tell you going to Purden Lake, located 64km east of town, is never a bad idea. Being a provincial park, be prepared to pay to camp overnight. Reservations may be recommended for camping on long weekends. This is also a great spot to go to for a relaxing day at the beach. A little further east of Purden Lake is the Ancient Forest (located 113km east of PG). This is a unique ecosystem for the region, as it is an inland rainforest. Expect to hike for about an hour, depending on your skill level. Bring a camera, and expect to share the trail and photo opportunities with others looking for an escape from the city. Another great spot to hike is Sugarbowl – Grizzly Den Provincial Park. This is an alpine recreation area, and has excellent hiking trails. Print out a map, and stick to the trails though, as people take wrong turns and can get lost in the park. Make sure to bring plenty of water!

and hiking trails. For a short hike, head up to Teapot Mountain, by Summit Lake. This mountain is a volcanic plug, and is a relatively easy day hike, apart from the top portion of the mountain. Be bear-aware, and bring lots of water! By the parking area for Teapot Mountain is the beginning of the Crooked River. Kayak and canoe enthusiasts can easily drop their boats into the water and paddle around the slow moving river. Just north of Summit Lake is a little hidden gem. Crystal Lake and Emerald Lake are day-use only sites, but have excellent water to paddle around. There are also fire pits and picnic tables for spending the entire day outside. The road is accessible by most vehicles, albeit it is slow going as the road is rocky! Crooked River Provincial Park is just north of the Crystal Lake turnoff and has several places to visit. Bear Lake has many campsites and a large day use area while Hart Lake and Square Lake provide excellent fishing opportunities. No matter the direction that you travel from Prince George, there seems to be something for everyone!

For the rainy days that warrant a little more time spent inside, Prince George doesn’t seem to fall short in this category. Why not stay out of the rain by going and spending time at either the Four Headed west of town brings multiple Seasons Pool or the PG Aquatic Centre spots to stop in at. Head down the (princegeorge.ca/cityliving/recreation/ Blackwater Road and stop at West Lake aquatics/). Both places are home to for an excellent day use site. There are multiple pools where you can float, relax, picnic tables and firepits, so bring lunch, dive, or swim laps. For the shopping sunscreen, and water to sunbathe the day enthusiasts, Pine Centre Mall (pinecentre. away. For the more adventurous types, com) is open and air-conditioned! June 29th 2013 The long summer days of Northern British Columbia can provide excellent opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors or the inside and will let people relax, hike, swim, paddle, bike, or many other opportunities. There are many resources available to provide information on where some excellent activities are and give suggestions on where to go and what to bring. Enjoy this summer, it should be a good one, and try not to think about going back to classes in the fall just yet!

Be Bear Aware

Page 4

No matter the choice of summer activity, safety is always a concern. Remember to not drink and drive! We are lucky to have resources such as keys please (250-6130203) as well as several taxi companies working in this town. As much as having that patio beer or two with your dinner is pleasurable, not driving while intoxicated is even more pleasurable! Another safety concern that outdoor enthusiasts need to be aware of is local wildlife. Prince George and the surrounding area have many different large animals, including moose, black bears, and grizzly bears. If you want to know more information on how to be bear-aware, take a look at http://www. env.gov.bc.ca/wld/documents/bearwld. htm for more information. Camping brings around fires and fire safety is a huge concern. Before you leave to go camping, check out http://bcwildfire. ca/hprScripts/WildfireNews/Bans.asp to see if there are any campfire bans. The BC Wildfire Management Branch also has information on what type of fires you are permitted, how large your fire can be (0.5m by 0.5m in width and height!), and how to safely have a campfire, including clearing the area of flammable debris and extinguishing your fire completely before leaving the area. Also, if you spot a fire, report it ASAP to 1-800-663-5555. When headed out to nature, let people know where you are going and when you are expected back. If you have a GPS unit, or a SPOT system, always carry it with you. Not everywhere around Prince George has cellular reception and these can be useful in case of emergency. Bug repellent is also a must when outdoors in Prince George. This is less of a safety concern, but more of a comfort concern. Forgetting this makes for a very unpleasant hike!

Pride Week in PG

Garett Svensen, Production Editor. This next weekend, July 4th through 7th, is Pride Week in Prince George. Starting with the raising of the Pride Flag at City Hall at noon on July 4th, there is a family fun day planned for that evening at the Roll-a-Dome starting at 6pm when it cools off. Expect inflatable activities and laser tag and fun for all ages. Friday the 5th has the How Rude drag show at the Ramada Ballroom at 7pm. Come see the best drag queens and kings in town strut their stuff.

The Confluence - Culture

Saturday the 6th has the Pride Parade downtown at 10:30 am. This is the 16th annual parade, and the event draws spectators and paraders from all over northern BC. CNC student’s union is looking for volunteers to hold a banner in the parade. Stop by the office on the 2nd or 3rd of July or email us at info@cncsu. ca to volunteer. That night, starting at 8, is the official Pride Party at the Ramada Ballroom.

Superior Art Creations…Right here in Prince George! This past Friday June 14th I had the privilege to attend an Art Show at the Books ‘n Company Art Space which showcased the talents of three budding Prince George artists. Hats off to Amie Stoltz, Kate Hart & Magda Partyka for hosting the event to share their work with us & create some art focused community. CNC alumni & past CNCU Fine Arts Club volunteer Amie Stolz unveiled a mixed media/watercolor grunge style showcase of Superheroes and Villains that depicted comical situations and characters’ life adventures.

Joining Amie was Magda Partyka, who presented stunning array of paintings including a portrait of her brother and local poet Mateusz Partyka and Kate Hart displayed a range of both paintings and charcoal creations and sketches with a focus on human emotion and body. To top it all off, one of my favorite local DJs, Nigel J Rimmer, kept the room buzzing with some chill and relaxed beats to suit the scene. Stay tuned because this fall, I’m told, they’ll have an even bigger show with more artists to accompany them!

The Confluence - Arts

A bit of a walk down memory lane, I especially enjoyed the Pinky and the Brain piece, which reminded me of the mad dash home to catch after-elementary-school cartoon specials.

That’s enough outta me though, as they say, a picture (or painting) says a thousand words so I’ll leave the rest up to the photos of the event.

Bloody Mary with Hot Fridge Pickles

Garett Svensen, Production Editor.

Hot Fridge Pickles: Clean, empty pickle jar or mason jar with lid (check for rust and don’t reuse canning lids) 1/2-1kg (1-2lb) Fresh Assorted Vegetables: Carrots and Green Beans are great, Daikon radishes and Okra work pretty decently as well. I’ve heard good things about beets, asparagus, cauliflower and, of course, cukes, but I either haven’t tried pickling them or they turned out not-so-great when I did. 4-6 Jalapeno Peppers 4-6 Garlic Cloves, peeled 500ml (2 cups) White vinegar (min 5% acetic acid) 6TBS Kosher or Pickling salt

The Confluence - Culture

1-2 TBS Allspice Berries

Hot Fridge Pickles Bloody Mary: In Canada we tend to be more used to the Bloody Ceasar, which tends to be a bit saltier and clam-nectar-ey. The bloody mary is a tiny bit different, see if you notice the difference. 1 & 1/2oz Vodka (Substitute with Tequila if you’re feeling sassy, it works great, just up the lime a little) 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce 4 dashes Tabasco Sauce 5oz (Half of one of the little steel cans) Tomato Juice. Squeeze (about 1/4 oz) fresh lime juice Pinch of salt and pepper

Strong herbs and spices: You have to compete with vinegar, heat and garlic. As is, the pickles aren’t bad but adding some dill, coriander or mustard can help round out the flavours during the mellowing process. Mustard and peppercorns will increase the heat of the pickles combined with the jalapenos. Coriander adds a lemony flavour and dill gives the pickles the classic pickle-ey flavour. Start boiling a big pot of water. If you have a cast-iron or steel pan, dry-roast the peppers until they are bright green with toasted black spots, and toast any spices you’d like to have that toasted spice flavour, you can skip this step if you like. Slice the peppers into long strips when cool, set aside any toasted spices. Scrub all the veggies and slice them into long sticks (beans and okra pods leave whole). Prepare the brine. In a non-reactive (Stainless steel or enameled) pot combine the vinegar, spices (including the allspice and any toasted spices), salt and 1 cup of water. If you want to have less of a vinegary taste you can go to 2 cups water, but the USDA does not recommend going more than 50-50 dilutation on the vinegar. I have seen several recipes online that use a 2-1 water to vinegar ratio though, presumably using the salt as a preservative, but I don’t chance it. Besides, these pickles are for a spicy, potent drink, and should be spicy and potent themselves. Bring the brine to a simmer. Once it is hot, throw in the garlic and let simmer while you prepare the jars. Take your cut veggies and blanch them in the pot of boiling water until they get very brightly coloured, then run under cold water in a strainer -this should only take a couple of minutes. Once the veggies are done, take the pickle jar and lid and immerse it in the boiling water. Using tongs and putting the jar in sideways into the water helps the process. Remove the jar to a heat-safe surface, let it dry a moment, then pack it full of the veggies, including the peppers and any herbs you are using. A single sprig of dill will usually suffice. Leave around 1-2 fingers room at the top of the jar. Take your pot of simmering brine, and cover the veggies. Fish the lid out of the boil pot and screw it on. Allow to cool. Stick in the fridge. After two days, they should be ready to use, but will get better with time. They should keep around 3 months.

Notes: The jar might seal with a ‘pop’ as it cools. This does not mean that it is shelfstable. The vinegar will help preserve everything as long as it stays in the fridge, but Fill a pint glass half to three-quarters full the pickles require further canning procedures to be safe left out at room temperature. of ice, let it cool. Pour everything else into The garlic may turn blue. That’s a harmless chemical reaction that sometimes happens a mixing glass, then pour it back and forth in garlic. It looks funky, but it is safe. Some veggies can also develop small dark-grey between the mixing glass and another flecks, particularly asparagus. That is another harmless chemical reaction. That being clean glass to get the mixture thoroughly said, if the brine gets cloudy, black spots develop on the pickles, or anything else looks mixed. It was a prosperous hot summer in High Desert City. Just recently graduated from high school, Joe overheard the first notes of La Marseillaise, the French national anthem, from a teen’s ten-transistor radio as he walked through the parking lot of Albertson’s shopping centre off Lodestone Avenue. He thought it odd to hear a foreign national anthem so deep inside the western United States, but in a few brief moments it turned into a popular song jackets and short-cropped hair in Grade 11 he soon learned was the Beatles’ “All You at their high school a year ago had made Need Is Love.” a profound and complete change into philosophical pacifists just because they Later, coming out of Albertson’s with his groceries, he heard the Beatles’ “When were now wearing long hair and beads. Joe walked into the Pell Mell Mall and found a news and tobacco shop. Headlines on the front pages of papers on the stands included such sentiments as “Boomers Bankrupting Medicare” and “Entitled Students Want Tuition Break.” The top headline of a major city tabloid screamed, “Shiftless Unemployed Draining EI, Welfare.” One news article in a metropolitan broadsheet paper said Prime Minister Jim Bear had just called for raising the retirement age to 75, in accordance with a recommendation from a University of Toronto business professor. A Montreal paper available at the shop carried an article about deserters from the U.S. Army being deported back to the States. A middle-aged man walking the other way in the mall hallway accosted him with “Get a job!” Joe went out into the mall parking lot, and, after a moment of indecision, walked across to Big Bucks for a coffee. As he put in his order, he overheard a conversation at one table where a man told his friends that the jobs building the Holdrege petroleum pipeline from Alberta to the coast in order to accommodate a powerful overseas trading partner were being restricted to nationals of that country. Although the pipeline route crossed through the subboreal forest just north of Glulamton, it was clear the unemployed in the community need not apply.
