CNC Students Build Canada Games Equipment.

By Garett Svensen, Editor-in-Chief. Several students in CNC’s Career Technical Centre Carpentry program have been busy building gun racks for the biathlon event in Prince George’s upcoming 2015 Canada Winter Games. Biathlon combines cross-country skiing with target shooting. The racks will get their shakedown run during the Western Canadian Biathlon championships this coming February when up to 150 athletes will compete at the Otway Nordic Ski Centre. During the 2015 Canada Winter Games, male and female athletes aged 16 to 18 will compete in four different biathlon events: sprint, individual, pursuit, and relay.

Students at CNC have built 40 rifle racks out of birch hardwood. “The racks were built from a prototype in Europe. The 2015 Canada Winter Games supplied the birchwood, and we went into a full production run in September,” said Ross Pullan, CNC carpentry instructor. “We changed the shop layout and used a mass production technique.” The hardwood racks are the first in their kind in Canada, having been adapted from European designs, and are lightweight, durable and sturdy. The students involved in the production of the racks were Career Technical Centre students: high school students who earn their foundation-level trades training as well as a high school diploma in their last years of high school. Dillon McCordie, from College Heights Secondary was shop foreman for the production run: “I was in charge of cutting out the material from the rough lumber and we were full-tilt for a week and a half,” he said. “It’s a huge thing to be part of the 2015 Games and the racks turned out really well.”

Instructor Ross Pullan shows the assembly process to Canada Games representative Christina Verticchio.

The biathlon events at the Canada Winter Games run from February 15th-20th 2015 at the Otway Nordic Ski Centre.

The Grey Cup

By Ryan Fournier, Contributor. November is a big month for the CFL because it’s the playoffs and the Grey Cup. Every team wants to make the playoffs because they know if they win all the games in the playoffs then they get to play in the biggest game in Canadian Football. The Grey Cup means so much to die hard CFL fans because they want to see their team hosting the Grey Cup.

The Confluence - Sports

The Grey Cup is just like the Super bowl there’s a huge festival in the host city to celebrate the history of the Grey Cup and people from all over Canada and United States come to be a part of this big event. The Grey cup will be held in Saskatchewan this year and people are very excited to be hosting the Grey Cup because they are passionate about football. Fans in Saskatchewan are hoping that the Roughriders beat the Calgary Stampeders this weekend so they can see their team not only host the Grey Cup but also play in the 101st Grey Cup game on home field. I remember when I attended my first Grey Cup game live in Vancouver and saw my BC Lions play the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at BC Place. The Lions were victorious and I got see my team hoist the Grey Cup live so I know from experience what it means to be the host city for the Grey Cup but also get to see your team play in the big game at home.

Page 3

Winning the Grey Cup is a big deal because it’s not an easy trophy to win and when you do win and takes a lot of hard work. I got the chance to hoist the Grey Cup I can’t explain how much emotions were running through my mind I will never forget that moment. I’m hoping to go to the Grey Cup next year as Vancouver is the host city again and hope to see the Lions play in the Grey Cup game live at home, just like I did in 2011.

Doing anything without succumbing to plague, starvation, or decapitation. A real problem still shares that correlation in present day.

You know what is still a problem in many areas of the world today? Doing anything without succumbing to plague, starvation, or decapitation. We learn about the Rwandan Genocide, the Syrian Civil War, and North African starvation, yet we still have the zealous attitude to bitch how we can put a man on the moon, but fail to harness the technology required to heat a hot-pocket in 5 seconds. It is official, the very second, "first world problem" was introduced into the English language, we had discovered magic. How was the trick performed?

We live in a beautiful world where the privileged can not only buy a set of testicles for the ball hitch of their lifted truck, but can also choose the color, the material, and the girth for the fucking things. It is a time where the privileged can stream immense amounts of code in the form of pornography in a fraction of a second.

November 14th 2013

You want to know what a problem was in 1456?

It is simple, we have become so entitled to our advancement that we have created a term to produce problems where none exist. If it is one thing the privileged enjoy more than anything else, it is bitching about nothing.

We have essentially become the maincast of Seinfeld. However, you fail to comprehend the state of advancement we have achieved in recent years. Next time you find yourself complaining about long lines at a bank, waiting fiveEven more so, you feel the need to criticize anything that is inconsistent with minutes for an expensive coffee, or having advancement. your cellphone battery die moments For example, what if you were to complain that waiting a few seconds to begin before you can finish a text, remember streaming said pornography is an injustice you should not have to experience. that there is some poor bastard millions of kilometres away kissing sweet-lady asphalt It is as if all the repression, containment, and exploitation that happens in the world is in their pursuit for equality. meaningless to you, because you have a problem that the rest of the world may or may not be experiencing. You wish to share your thoughts with the world, because you are suffering greatly, and Ryan UrbanWhite is a local student, musician, poet, artist and blogger. You great suffering emits great art, and great art must be shared. can catch his thoughts on life on his blog, You log in to your social media profile, type the lines, "I seriously have to wait 2 The Life and Times of Grizzly Ryan at: seconds to watch 100 pounds of plastic get nailed by some lucky bastard in a 1080P thelifeandtimesofgrizzlyryan.blogspot.ca. Malibu beach-house? This is bullshit." It updates once or twice a week. However, you wish not to look like an asshole.

The Confluence - Opinion

First World Problems

Historically, a problem correlated with the unlikelihood of one’s survival.

You finish your expression with, "First world problems, am I right?" What a funny statement, "first world problem", is. It denotes that we, as privileged citizens, have actual problems.

All is well. You can go on enjoying your privilege at little to no cost for you.

A Baleful Blind Date By Jocelyn Coupland, Contributor.

My word, stuffing is everywhere. If you were going to drop money Instead of betting it on something At least spend it on me! And this location. A boozer just burped behind me Notice how his breath curdled the tips of my hair This is the worst date ever.

The End

First World Lamentation

By Jordi Hamilton, Contributor.

By Jordi Hamilton, Contributor.

And in the end, all was still No one aboard the ships a sail No sailors for the waves to trail Never would we, to our potential, reach The daylight would never breach Our eyes the same way ever again...

The Confluence - Arts

And in the end, it all was still Never to meet the rest of time Human race, to ultimate crime, Fell...

Citrus fruit and salad dressing The cut lip laments That cute girl turns around Her beard is as straight as her hair My eyes will never open again

Restoration out of reach Never would our greed beseech Us ever again...

Marker to paper Chalk to chalk board Tacks to table Activate the auditory weapons of the classroom

And in the twilight, all was gone Never, to advance the pawns Of corporate worlds…

You can smell the beauty of That which we call a rose Which by any other name Would taste as awful

And never would old age lurk Time would not again curse Us with the terror of decay And in the end A question written in the sand: "Is it right or is it wrong When something that’s so evil’s gone, And with it so has love, fell From this, so awful, realm?" In a world devoid of hate or thrill In the end all was still.

Page 9

The smell of muddy wet dog And strawberry-pomegranate shampoo Coalesce into something that’s not quite What you’d ever want to smell.

And all the poverty in Africa The aftermath of a hurricane All the despair of a frog in a frying pan Are pretty bad too
