Growing the Port, Growing the Business with Bill Johnson, Port Director PortMiami Meeting sponsored by Allied Steel Buildings and JobJar.com pate in the expansion in its own back yard at the Port of Miami. Since taking the helm of PortMiami, Johnson has been charting an ambitious course highlighted by over $2 billion in infrastructure improvements. “While this Port is a publicly-owned asset, it operates with a private sector mentality,” Johnson said. “We’re fully focused on offering unparalleled customer care; delivering sustainable, quality products; and providing the best facilities with technologically advanced security systems.” Johnson explained PortMiami is deepening the waters to accommodate super-sized cargo ships, capture new trade and help create thousands of new jobs throughout Florida.

welcomed business and community leaders to Christine Lee’s at Gulfstream Park, where Lassner shared strategies for full steam ahead success. “ASB is very excited about the expansion of the Port of Miami since it directly correlates with the work Allied is doing in Panama,” he said “To date we have built over three million square feet of one-story structures in Panama and we are now completing a new multistory power plant at the Panama canal, office buildings and maintenance structures for the expansion.” Allied does this work worldwide, but certainly hopes to partici-

The following expressions and translations are often suggested and quoted frequently but you can create your own phrases as well. PORTMIAMI, from page 1 ––––– Rail freight will facilitate faster, costefficient cargo movement to key US markets. And a tunnel, now being constructed under Biscayne Bay, will alleviate traffic congestion by directly linking PortMiami to I-95 without any traffic lights. Already heralded as the “undisputed cruise capital of the world,” an impressive line-up of cruise brands is also growing as PortMiami prepares to welcome Disney Cruise Lines, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, MSC Cruises USA and luxurious new ships including the Carnival Breeze, Celebrity Reflection and Oceania Riviera. Next year, PortMiami will welcome MSC Cruises’ new build, the MSC Divina, and in 2014, Norwegian Getaway will make Miami its homeport. “Last year, PortMiami achieved the most profitable position in our 100-year history,” Johnson said. “Florida is now ranked number four in America in international trade and within the next five years we can be the number one state in the US for international trade. Clients around the world are also benefitting from the fast-paced growth of Allied Steel Buildings - successfully managing over 3,700 building projects in more than 38 countries in recent years. “The industry has changed a lot. Pre-engineered steel used to be considered an alternative to conventional construction; with advancement by talented engineering and project managers, they are now being specified for by commercial, industrial and agricultural customers,” Lassner said. “Although we’re around the globe, there’s no greater satisfaction than working in our own backyard where our Fort Lauderdale and Orlando offices are enjoying projects with a diverse group of local businesses including business parks, riding arenas, fisheries and our state’s energy companies to name some.” To date, Allied has delivered 169 projects in the state of Florida. Sharing the Port’s mission to help create jobs, Allied recently created a

Our Greatest Chief Justice-John Marshall
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS Where in our Constitution does it state that the Supreme Court has the power to over-rule and declare as unconstitutional acts by our President and Legislature? Nowhere! This was precisely a key issue facing our Founding Fathers in their trying to creating a nation based upon individual rights that never previously existed. With little historical sources to guide them, our Founding Fathers created a three part government (Executive, Legislature and Judiciary) with the weakest, ill-defined power to the Supreme Court, leaving that issue for future generations to resolve. The Supreme Court was originally considered so weak that some nominees rejected accepting appointments to the Supreme Court, preferring appointments to higher regarded State Supreme Courts. It is questionable if our nation, as we know it, would have survived with unlimited, unchecked power to our President or Legislature. In private correspondence, President George Washington gave our nation less than 20 years to exist.
In 1801, Federalist President John Adams chose John Marshall, a man with no prior judicial experience, as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. In Marbury vs. Madison, a case involving the validity of Adams’s mid-night judicial appointments (after Adams lost the Presidential election to Republican Jefferson but before Jefferson’s swearing in), the issue came before the Supreme Court with the basic question being did the Court have power to rule on the constitutionality of the acts of the President and Legislature? Could the President and/or Legislative branches evade judicial orders? Marshall was crystal clear, “It is the duty of the judicial department to say what the law is under the Constitution; that the Constitution is superior to acts of the Legislature (and Executive); it was therefore within the Court’s power to strike down unconstitutional acts by the Legislature (and Executive), otherwise, it would subvert the foundation of the Constitution.” Marshall’s opinion became established law. Generations of historians “have elected Marshall to the pantheon of judicial greatness, and have anointed his Marbury opinion as the most important in American judicial history.” That decision helped elevate our nation to the greatest civilization as to the rights of mankind that ever existed.

‘What’s New’
Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY Proving even in a tough economy Aventura can still prosper, the city is welcoming new businesses offering something for everyone: H&M, the Swedish retailer known for designer fashion at budget friendly prices, is coming to Aventura Mall! H&M actually stands for Hennes & Mauritz – but when “fashionistas and recessionistas” from other cities learn about the store’s newest location, H&M will stand for “Hurry&Move” to Aventura! Jared, the Galleria of Jewelry, is coming to Aventura - so husbands and boyfriends seeking apologies are being put on notice: Flowers, perfume or candy may be sweet but not nearly as effective as diamonds or gold for guaranteeing forgiveness. The Vitamin Shoppe has opened an Aventura store with virtually every kind of supplement you can imagine to support greater health and vitality…Maybe that’s why
everyone’s running, biking, rollerblading and pushing their baby strollers so much faster around the circle! Natutzzi Italian Leather has also opened a new store in Aventura - but you should know, they have a strict rule that prohibits neighboring Starbucks customers from coming in to enjoy their Italian roast coffee on the cushy sofas and chairs. PNC Bank is rising at the site of the former Burger King at Loehmann’s. Let’s just hope some people don’t get confused and start asking tellers at the new drivethru for burgers and fries! AT&T is moving to a another location within Aventura. Signs with the new address are posted at the store currently in the Promenade Shops - but just in case you can’t find the new place, just map it on your phone – or if you have the space-age “smartest” phone, just push a button and you’ll be transported there! Mattress Firm, a/k/a Mattress Giant, is a new name in town – but ever wonder why there are so many mattress stores within city limits? Could be because all the snowbirds from the “city that never sleeps” are realizing Aventura, the “city of excellence” is a much dreamier place to live yearround!

Reading between the lines
Julia Yarbough SEASON OF CHANGE Am I the only person out there who will read the same novel several times? I’ll find a good read, enjoy the story, then several years later, read it - AGAIN. I recently carried out this somewhat odd pattern during a cross-country flight from Los Angeles to South Florida. I’ll set the scene to say I had traveled to The City of Angels...to Hollywood, because of my Highway to a Husband life journey. Turns out, thousands of blog fans and followers aren’t the only ones who can relate to the very real predicament faced by thousands of single men and women around the country. My story (and subsequent public sharing of such) seem to have all the makings of a TV show. I am proud to say Highway to a Husband is now - as they say in the business - IN DEVELOPMENT for a proposed reality show based on my journey. Wow! So as my head was about to implode from the information discussed in a round of Los Angeles/Hollywood producer meetings, I boarded my plane feeling as if my usable brain matter was instead, a bowl of soggy cotton balls. In-flight work was out of the question. I decided to grab a book. As I stepped into a bookstore, it was as if an invisible force had already decided what I
would read. I found myself standing in front of several novels by Tom Robbins. A quirky, tell-it-like-it-is author who quite often pokes fun at the sometimes seemingly insane structure and guidelines of modern society, my sense of humor is drawn to Robbins. For some reason, my hand instantly went to a novel I had previously read many years ago, JITTERBUG PERFUME. It’s the story of a man who is determined to defy death. To chart his own course in life. To step outside the norms and customs of his time and assert his individuality. The lead character is an adventurer, a man who questions most everything around him; a man who suffers great losses, but also reaps great rewards because he is willing to risk everything. Hmmm...I can relate. I chuckled at the irony of my choosing this book - AGAIN. Had the lead character’s journey made a subliminal imprint on me the first time around? Was a fictional character in some way responsible for me believing I could create my own destiny? I couldn’t help but wonder... who out there might be leaving a mark on me? Let me know; I would love to hear from you! A multiple Emmy Award winning Anchor and Reporter, Julia Yarbough is a national blogger, motivational speaker, hostess, travel addict and health & fitness enthusiast. To follow Julia’s quirky new reality of life as she continues to navigate the sometimes rocky road of relationships, check out www.highwaytoahusband.com. When Alan H. Singer, Financial Consultant, isn’t at his Wells Fargo Advisors Aventura office helping clients invest wisely, he dedicates much of his time investing in supporting the success of physically and mentally challenged children involved in Special Olympics Florida. To honor Singer’s 30-year tenure serving as Special Olympics Chair, Wells Fargo Advisors recently presented him with a “Volunteer Service Award and $10,000 donation to the David L. Singer Memorial Foundation. The Foundation was established in 1989 by Singer as a tribute to his son, who succumed to cancer. Singer’s son loved the Special Olympics and in 1991, the annual Special Olympics “Summer Games was renamed “The David L. Singer Memorial Special Olympics. Singer was proud to be selected out of 500 nominess to receive one of Wells Fargo’s top 16 Volunteer Service Awards and the $10,000 donation, which will help fund Special Olympics athletic programs. The philosophy Wells Fargo Advisors shares with associates imparts the message: “We value the extraordinary commitment shown by team members who dedicate their time and talent to volunteering with a nonprofit organization or school. Annually, we acknowledge
this dedication by awarding those selected to be recognized for outstanding volunteerism. Singer initiated a Special Olympics program in 1983 through the North Miami Beach Optimist Club and was sanctioned by the local Special Olympics that year. “We were one of the first all-volunteer programs that funded, hosted and ran a major program on behalf of Special Olympics and became proficient enough that Special Olympics uses our program nationally as a prototype to encourage volunteerism on a local level to run programs on their behalf, Singer said. “Our program works hard to break down stereotypes many people have about the cognitively disabled. Volunteers are being recruited now for the 2013 Special Olympics Summer Games qualifying Track & Field Meet, which will be held March 3 at the Traz Powell Stadium at Miami-Dade College, hosted by the David L. Singer Memorial Foundation and North Miami Beach Optimist Club. Special guests will include professional athletes from the Dolphins, HEAT, Marlins and Panthers. T he Life and Times of Ron Miller BY MICHAEL MILLER
After 84 years and 22 days, my father, my dad, or as he preferred to be called – Ron – called it a day. He died while sitting in his wheelchair, as his medicine was being prepared. Years ago, Ron told me, “Do whatever you want to do, and do your best at it until you don’t want to do it anymore. And then, do something else.” And that’s just what Ron did, and this philosophy served him well right up to his dying moment. Although he had suffered a stroke in 1995, had limited use of one leg and arm and could only speak a few dozen words, he lived his last 17 years with vigor, strength and the determination to live life to the fullest. Here’s a look back at his life…
THE EARLY DAYS: Ron, who was quite rambunctious and a tough guy even in his early days, grew up in Chicago with his folks Dave and Alice Miller and his sister Elaine. Ron attended the University of Chicago and although he did not graduate, he was always a student and studied his entire life. After leaving school he joined the army and served for about a year. While in the army, he honed his communication skills, and this was the beginning of his long-lasting love with radio, television and newspapers. And then came the love of his life – my mother, Fern Taube Larmen Miller. The two of them were childhood sweethearts. They married, and before too long they had four boys, Scott, Michael, Jordan (deceased) and Grant. A CAREER IS BORN: While living in Huntington, West Virginia, Ron had his first radio show, worked at a newspaper, was on television and radio and his dreams were starting to come true. His other dream was to live in Florida. He followed that dream, moved the family to Miami and started looking for work in his chosen field. In the meantime, he sold cemetery plots and was building a sales force. Then, his passion and determination paid off. He was offered a job at radio station, WEDR. Within months, Ron started producing programs at WEDR and was the on-air personality for a show called The Gospel Train. In the late 50s and early 60s, he was also on Channel 7 as an anchor and reporter, and shared that space with Wayne Farris. Around the same time, Ron bought the South Dade Shopping News, a monthly newspaper that was started by James Carey Martin in 1958. Ron grew the business and it became Miami’s Community Newspapers, with weekly newspapers all over town. Ron was a busy guy. At one point, he was on the radio, on TV, had a group of newspapers and a wife and four wild children. Soon though, the TV gig came to an end, the radio station was sold and the format changed, and there he was with a group of struggling weekly newspapers. DOING THE RIGHT THING Ron’s radio show on WEDR was centered on black preachers who discussed what was going on with their churches and what could be done to relieve the struggles that blacks were
experiencing in the late 1950s and 1960s. Ron loved helping those in need. He was a true liberal and stood up for people, especially blacks. I recall many occasions when people would make disparaging remarks about blacks, Ron would instantly respond, “My grandfather was black.” And I have to tell you, I was proud of him for standing up and speaking out, especially at a time when race riots were in full swing. In the late 60s, he took me to a Freedom March in St. Augustine where I got a first-hand look at seeing the white beaches being integrated. That was the first time my eyes were opened to the struggle blacks were experiencing. He was active in supporting the causes of the NAACP, the ACLU and other liberal organizations, and served at the president of the First Unitarian Church of Miami. Surely some of those ideals are imbedded in my brothers and me. My affinity to helping people clearly came from my father. I am very grateful that he talked the talk, walked the walk and shared it with me and my brothers Grant and Scott.

So you can look into his soul and get a sense of who Ron Miller really was, I’m sharing a piece he wrote and read at the funeral of his wife Fern, my mother, at the First Unitarian Church of Miami in August 1979.

FOR THE LOVE OF FAMILY: In 1970, tragedy struck and my brother Jordan, died in a car crash. This was devastating for the entire family. Ron, though he rarely showed an emotional side, left the boys and perhaps my mother in an odd place of grief and sadness. He struggled to work through this tragedy. His carefree view of the world came crashing down. My mother took the brunt of this family heartbreak and the stress on her was enormous. Soon thereafter she was diagnosed with primary biliary cirrhosis. She told me several times that she thought the stress of Jordan’s death caused her fatal illness. When this happened, Ron essentially stopped working and he and my mother moved to North Carolina. He took her to numerous doctors across the country and overseas, trying traditional and non-traditional treatments in search of a cure. Eventually, they came back to Miami where they had spent so many years together. Ron clearly loved my mother, spent all of his time with her, and for sure kept her alive for many more years. Soon after my mother’s death in 1979, Ron left Miami and lived in Mexico and Spain for some years, and eventually settled in West Palm Beach. After he had a stroke in 1995, we brought him back to Miami so he could attend rehab at South Miami Hospital and be with family. A FOND FAREWELL: Ron lived the life he wanted, played by his rules, taught others to be compassionate, loved helping people and taught his children to tell their children: I love you. Dad – thanks for the lessons, thanks for being there. And, just as you wrote in so many of your letters to me – Carpe Diem.

Fern, where have you gone without me? My heart breaks, my eyes redden, and I cry. My face contorts, I sob. I need you and want to be with you, but you’ve gone away from me. You were the love of my life all these years. We had a childhood romance that never ended – a romance that started when we were 15, and died only when you did. I can hardly move, or talk. I’m frozen. My voice disappears and I can barely squeak out sounds when I think of you and your death. When you worsened two weeks ago, for four terrible days, I knew you were near the bottom, almost dead. But then, the next morning you came back. Chipper, smiling, alert … and I called you Warsaw, the most devastated city in Europe during World War II. And, then, we planned a rebuilding program of food and vitamins, psychic healing, coffee enemas, acupuncture, and the few things that orthodox medicine can offer to help you fight liver disease. I told you that you would rise again. That you would be stronger and healthier, whole and hearty, participate in society, and stay with us. I never faltered in my belief, all these ten years of disease. And you said we would die together in a crash, meaning that you wouldn’t die of the disease. We told each other of the touching scene in the play “Albert and I,” which we saw in London, when Albert died in Queen Victoria’s arms, and she said, “Albert, I wouldn’t do this to you.” Fern, I wouldn’t do this to you – die without you – let you live without me. I know you fought. I gave you strength and courage. I massaged you and held you and put the strength of my hands and body on you to make you stronger. You were determined to live, you fought hard… When you were incoherent, you responded to me when I told you that you have to become strong and healthy again to be with us, to let me be with you. When you were in a coma during your last day and half, when the liver failed, I pleaded with you, and cried over your shriveling body, the tears running down my shirt and onto you, urging you to be strong and survive this. And, you fought. You whispered “yes” through your parched mouth, barely able to understand what I was saying because the ammonia from your liver had crept into your brain. You said “yes.” You nodded, breathing hard with great effort – each breath like a bellow’s breath, in a dying coma, telling me “yes.” You had strength in your arms and in your legs during your last day and half, my wounded dove. Your head jerking, sometimes saying a word to the members
of our family, sometimes recognizing us, wanting to be with us, but dying because your liver failed and the poisons went everywhere in you. You were losing weight every day, your skin turning darker, your head becoming bonier, my love. My heart broke when I saw what I saw, what was happening to you. I rubbed the Vitamin E into your bruised and parched lips so they would heal, and wished that there was something I could rub on your skin that would heal your insides. I was helpless. Ten years ago, you were told you had six months to live. You told me the doctor’s diagnosis when we sat together one Sunday morning at Fuch’s Park, enjoying the lake, the greenery and the ducks. The doctors had, by their diagnosis, condemned you to die. You made a death trip across the nation to Capistrano, California, to talk with a retired 75-year old physician, who told you “you aren’t as sick as they say.” He told you to change your diet drastically. You came back on a “new life” trip, ready to try something new to help you to live. And that was the first of many new ideas we investigated, many of which you tried. Although you didn’t have strong beliefs in some, you did accept them because I urged you. The effect of these unorthodox procedures helped you to live ten years, even though orthodox medicine had virtually no means to help people with this rare disease. You were rare. Your conservative education as a nurse and your respect to physicians, made it difficult for you. You were willing to try the unorthodox and you were determined to live … the final ingredient that kept you here for ten years. You were a jewel. So many devoted friends found you the ideal companion. I respected you so much for that, and marveled at how people were drawn to you. I am nothing without you. The best part of my life is gone. I was the lucky one. I found you early, and was able to be with you for many years. Without you, I cry. I cry because you are gone and can no longer enjoy the friends and relatives, the cities of the world, the peaceful beloved countryside of Marshall, North Carolina. You were a crystal that shone … reflected goodness, joy and happiness. I love you so – more every year. When you were in your final days and nights, I wouldn’t let you die. I had to have you alive. I poured strength into you. I made you live. But, in the end, I failed. I’m so sad, so sad. You won’t be here. It is your presence I need. I shall miss you. I need you. Fern, where have you gone without me? The best of my life has gone. This eulogy was delivered by Ron Miller at the First Unitarian Church of Miami on August 17, 1979.

2013 Ford Flex has improved design, new technology Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS The Ford Flex is another one of those cars that seems to grow on you. I didn’t like it when it was introduced three years ago; however, my like for the SUV has evolved as I became more familiar with it and subtle design changes were made. For 2013, Flex has a new look inside and out. The front end now is slightly rounded, somewhat reducing the overall boxy look, and the Ford blue oval has been removed from the front, leaving only the Flex badge. There also are six all-new wheel styles, including three all-new 20-inch selections. To the rear, Flex now has standard dual exhaust and a new integrated rear view camera. Inside there are new and improved instrument clusters, new steering wheel and electronic finish panels, and new seat trim. There also is an available secondrow refrigerated console and the latest generation of MyFord Touch with SYNC
for your Smart phone. Also new is an Appearance Package, available on Limited and SEL models, that includes a two-tone black roof and black mirrors, 20-inch machined aluminum wheels with painted pockets, leather seats, unique door trim panels and other interior upgrades for a distinctive premium look and feel. The new Flex comes in nine exterior colors, including three new colors for 2013 — Ruby Red tinted clearcoat, Deep Impact Blue and Kodiak Brown — and you can choose from body-color roofs or two-tone with white, silver or black. The three-row, seven-passenger Flex also has new safety and driver aid features such as adaptive cruise control with collision warning and brake support; Ford’s Blind Spot Information System (BLIS); Intelligent Access with push-button start and remote start technology; rain-sensing wipers, power-fold mirrors, power tilt and telescoping steering column and new rear inflatable seat belts. The inflatable seat belts are designed to deploy over a person’s torso and shoulder in 40 milliseconds. As for power, Flex comes standard with a new 3.5-liter 287 hp Ti-VCT V-6 engine

that delivers and additional 25 hp and one mpg better fuel economy. The fuel-efficient EcoBoost 3.5-liter 365 hp V-6 also remains available. Both engines are mated to a sixspeed SelectShift Automatic transmission. Flex also comes with Torque Vectoring Control and Curve Control technology, systems usually found on high-performance cars. Torque Vectoring Control uses the car’s brakes to balance distribution of engine torque between the front wheels during cornering for improved road grip and steering. The system operates using the car’s stability control module and monitors
the vehicle 100 times per second. Curve Control senses when the vehicle is entering a curve too fast and can apply four-wheel smart braking to reduce vehicle speed by up to 10 mph in about one second and help you steer the car on its intended path. Pricing on the 2013 Ford Flex starts at $31,710. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. Citizens Insurance is at it again!
Russel Lazega ATTORNEY / AUTHOR It all seemed simple enough. Your kitchen pipe burst and flooded your new Brazilian Cherry floors and you want your insurance company to fix the damage and restore your peaceful Aventura condo. After all, that’s why you pay those everincreasing premiums (nearly a 100% average increase for the coming year by my latest check). One problem: If your insurance company (like so many of us in the sunny storm corridor) happens to be Citizens you may now be forced to travel to Tallahassee to fight your claim. As if skyrocketing rates and shrinking coverage wasn’t enough, now there’s this! SO WHAT HAPPENED? Citizens recently convinced a court that it can force any policyholder bringing suit against it to file in Leon County where Citizens is headquartered. WHY WOULD THEY DO THIS? One very good reason is that it makes it easier for Citizens to fight your claim and much, much harder for the average South
Floridian to challenge Citizens’ claim denial/underpayment. No doubt also, Citizens is keenly aware that there isn’t a glut of hurricane and property attorneys in Tallahassee waiting since 1864 for the next big storm to hit. They have plenty of lawyers there – Joe Consumer doesn’t. SO WHAT CAN YOU DO? 1) First always try to settle the claim. A reputable public adjuster or attorney can almost always get you a better result. Think of it this way: Do you know how much per square foot you should pay for the glue securing those Brazilian floors or how many screws the drywall needs? 2) If you can’t settle the claim look for an attorney that practices in Tallahassee. He/She may need to be there a lot. 3) Scream to your state legislators to stop the abuse before it gets worse. Russel Lazega is an attorney and author of several of Florida’s most widely distributed legal textbooks on Florida Insurance Law: West’s Florida Practice Series Volume 7 and West’s Florida Insurance Law & Practice. Mr. Lazega represents accident victims, insurance policyholders and condominium associations and is based in Dania Beach, Tallahassee, North Miami, Orlando and Tampa, Florida. Contact: Lazegalaw.com

FPL CORNER FPL Marks Hurricane Andrew Anniversary as a Time to Remember, Learn and Prepare
On Aug. 24, Florida and the nation will observe the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew, one of the most dramatic and devastating natural disasters in modern history. For those who lived through the storm and witnessed its incredible destruction first hand, this month is a time of solemn remembrance. And for everyone across the state of Florida and all along the Eastern seaboard and the Gulf Coast, Andrew’s anniversary is an occasion to learn from the past and to recognize the unpredictable and powerful nature of hurricanes, along with the absolute necessity of good planning and preparation throughout every hurricane season. When Andrew struck just south of Miami, it made landfall with peak sustained winds of 165 miles per hour, and gusts of up to 175 mph. Now classified as a rare Category 5, the hurricane pushed a massive storm surge up Biscayne Bay, and delivered more than 7 inches of rain along the core of its path. Damages from the storm totaled more than $25 billion dollars throughout the Bahamas, Florida and the Gulf states, with thousands of homes lost and many more damaged. FPL’s storm preparedness and recovery processes were also significantly challenged by Hurricane Andrew. As crews worked feverishly to restore power after the storm, FPL developed and perfected some of the systems now in place to map storm damage and to estimate restoration times. “At FPL, hurricane preparation is now part of our daily operations, every day we’re not in a storm we’re preparing for one. On this anniversary, we urge our customers to prioritize disaster planning too,” said Keith Hardy, FPL’s vice president of Distribution. “We are always working to help the communities we serve prepare for the next storm. Every year we make multi-million dollar investments in our infrastructure to make it more resilient.” In the past two decades, advances in technology have changed every step in the hurricane preparation and recovery process. New forecasting tools allow for more frequent assessments of a storm’s path and intensity, and better computer modeling has improved accuracy, especially on the intensity front. At the same time, technology has altered the way that information is communicated before, during and after a hurricane. Today, storms can be tracked online, on mobile devices, through social media outlets, and of course through traditional media sources. FPL has harnessed technology to enhance the way that it communicates with customers before and after hurricanes, and the way that it pre-positions restoration crews and models the damage to its system from a storm. To help with preparation, FPL offers customers a wealth of information and tips on its website, www.FPL.com. After a hurricane, FPL offers constant updates and information about the power restoration process through its website, which is mobile friendly, and through Twitter (www.twitter.com/insideFPL), Facebook (www.facebook.com/FPLconnect) and YouTube (www.youtube.com/FPL). FPL’s blog (www.FPLblog.com) is also an important source of news. “But the fact is, while much has changed since Andrew reached our shores,” said Hardy, “one simple truth remains the same: hurricanes carry with them a potentially overwhelming destructive power, and when a major storm hits, power will be interrupted, trees will fall and water will rise. Floridians must understand this fact and make every preparation for it.”

‘Long Live Healthy’ with Dr. Charles Shenker and MDVIP: Value in Prevention BY BARI AUERBACH
When Dr. Charles Shenker isn’t busy serving as Chief of Staff for Aventura Hospital, he’s devoted to helping his private practice patients experience MDVIP (value in prevention) benefits associated with an innovative approach to primary care that’s transforming the healthcare experience in Aventura – and across the country. For the past seven years, Dr. Shenker has been affiliated with MDVIP – a national network comprised of exceptional physicians practicing highly personalized preventive care. Over 550 MDVIP doctors care for more than 185,000 patients nationally and collaborate year-round to create individualized, state-of-the-art wellness plans enabling people of all ages to live healthier, more vibrant lives. “Each patient’s customized wellness plan is based on extensive testing, screenings and identification of risk factors so we can proactively target and address specific goals focusing on critical areas of health and wellness,” explains Dr. Shenker, board certified in internal and pulmonary medicine. Now that the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the healthcare reform law, and with more patients expected to enter doctors’ offices, it is even more critical for consumers to take charge of their healthcare. Unlike traditional practices with thousands of patients, Dr. Shenker has a reduced number of patients. “This allows me to spend significantly more time with people and answer all of their questions,” Dr. Shenker said. “I’m also always available for on-time, same-day appointments that last as long as necessary, consultations with specialists, ER and hospital visits, and appointments for MDVIP patients visiting from out of

town who might need urgent care.” Patients also appreciate having a personal website allowing them to securely access their personal healthcare information anytime. “Convenience, availability, early detection and personalized care are MDVIP advantages, ultimately serving to improve patient outcomes and healthcare costs,” Dr. Shenker said. “My goal is to do everything in my power to facilitate the motto: Long Live Healthy.” And to prove it, Dr. Shenker also shares something patients consider priceless - his cell phone number! ‘Indulge without the bulge’ BY BARI AUERBACH
Ever wish you could eat favorite fattening foods without gaining weight? It’s possible by learning about some creative ingredient substitutions recently presented by famous chefs demonstrating make-over recipes on a recent episode of the Dr. Oz Show. Better Burgers: Instead of using beef, the chefs recommended tuna or ground white turkey breast. Chef Todd English made a “Smashed Tuna Burger” with ginger; Chef Aaron Sanchez made a turkey burger with soy sauce and hot chilies; and Chef Candice Kumai’s winning recipe for “Skinny Jean Sliders” was made with caramelized mushrooms and onions mixed into the ground turkey to create “juicy, flavorful, excellent” sliders (use whole grain bun). According to Dr. Oz, while “normal” burgers have 700 calories, two “Skinny Jean Sliders” only have about 400 calories. Delivering Diet-Friendly Pizza: The recipes for healthier pizzas included Chef Kumai’s grilled white pizza with artichokes and a bit of hard parmesan cheese; Chef Sanchez topped his pizza with white beans, tomatoes and dried chili; and Chef English won the taste test with his “No-Dough Whole Wheat Pizza.” Chef English suggests using whole wheat Naan brushed with an artichoke puree spread, cherry tomatoes, whipped low-fat ricotta, chopped basil, arugula and a sprinkling of low-fat mozzarella. According to Dr. Oz, a regular serving of pizza has as much as 830 calories while Chef English’s version has only 345 calories. Taking the Fat out of Tacos: In lieu of pork or beef, the chefs agreed fish and seafood are healthier choices. Chef English prepared shrimp and butternut squash tacos with salsa; Chef Kumai made fish tacos with tequila lime sauce; and Chef Sanchez’s Mahi Mahi tacos were the taste testers’ favorite. Chef Sanchez explained he seared the fish and cut it up in pieces placed in warm corn tortillas. Then he brushed on smoked jalapeño puree with roasted garlic and agave nectar. The tacos were topped with avocado slices, roasted mango/tomato salsa and arugula. Dr. Oz pointed out tacos at a
typical restaurant have 1,142 calories – but two of Chef Sanchez’s fish tacos only have 305 calories. Appealing Appetizers: Chef English proved you can indulge in hot artichoke and spinach dip - and not tip the scale! He replaced full fat cream cheese with half a portion of Greek yogurt and half a portion of reduced-fat cream cheese mixed with artichoke hearts and spinach. He added a little milk, crushed red pepper flakes, salt, pepper, garlic powder, a bit of parmesan and then let the mixture simmer on the stove for about ten minutes. He topped the dip with diced tomatoes and instead of chips for dipping, he used celery sticks. Dr. Oz noted Olive Garden’s version has 488 calories and 23 grams of fat – but Chef English’s dip only has 264 calories and 15 grams of fat. Chef English also made guilt-free potato skins by scooping out baked potatoes and filling them with reduced fat cheddar cheese and turkey bacon. According to Dr. Oz, TGI Friday’s version is loaded with 624 calories and 41 grams of fat while Chef English’s version only has 178 calories and 9 grams of fat – and the best part is you can have three skins and still feel great about showing off some skin at the beach! Dental Care Group’s Dr. Koslovsky helps bring dental care to impoverished country
Dr. David Koslovsky and the kidshe helps. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BY BARI AUERBACH
As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon at the Dental Care Group in Aventura, Dr. David Koslovsky helps keep families in South Florida smiling – but now, as far away as East Central Africa, Dr. Koslovsky is joining in efforts to improve the dental health of needy people living in Burundi - one of the poorest countries in the world. Earlier this year, Dr. Koslovsky was invited to visit Village Health Works in Kigutu, Burundi to help establish an oral health program along with colleagues from Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. The Village Health Works medical clinic is dedicated to providing free care to impoverished people in Burundi, where the population now exceeds nine million and no dentists are accessible in rural areas. As a result, tooth decay, infections and pain are commonplace. Dr. Koslovsky, who also serves as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Columbia University, traveled to Burundi with several colleagues to assist in developing community-based oral health prevention and teaching programs. Instruments needed to perform hundreds of extractions during the mission were generously donated by the Henry Schein Company. Dr. Koslovsky’s team is currently building a fully-functional operating room in Kigutu to manage large maxillofa-
cial infections, treat cleft lip and palate and remove large tumors of the face. Village Health Works was founded by Deogratias (Deo) Niyizonkiza, an American citizen, born in rural Burudi. After completing his undergraduate education at Columbia University and studying at Harvard’s School of Public Health as well as Dartmouth Medical School, Deo returned to Burundi and opened Village Health Works in 2007. In the spirit of Village Health Works’ humanitarianism, Dr. Koslovsky also recently participated in Dental Care Group’s “Dentistry from Our Heart’s” day, inviting those less fortunate to receive free dental services. At Dental Care Group, Dr. Koslovsky’s expertise includes impacted wisdom teeth, pathology and dental implants, as well as bone and soft tissue reconstruction. Dr. Koslovsky is also certified in outpatient general anesthesia. The Dental Care Group based in Aventura and Pembroke Pines is a multispecialty practice providing patientfocused preventive and cosmetic care. The Dental Care Group as well as Aventura Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics patients benefit from state-of-the-art technology combined with an over 35-year tradition of dental excellence.
