Hail to the chief BY BARI AUERBACH

unny Isles Beach Police Chief Fred Maas is earning accolades for multitasking… leading “best in blue” officers while simultaneously serving as interim City Manager until Christopher Russo returns to fill the position on Oct. 15. Maas was appointed interim City Manager following the recent resignation of former City Manager Alan J. Cohen. Maas also served as interim City Manager once before following the departure of Russo, who originally served as City Manager from 2000 through 2005 – when Russo left to embark on a career in the private sector. In July of 2012, the City Commission voted to hire Russo back – but in the “interim,” Maas has been happy to help ensure Sunny Isles Beach is managing just fine. Maas explained he feels serving as interim City Manager hasn’t compromised efficient management of the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department “We have a very competent team of department heads who are highly knowledgeable and their work ethic is incomparable,” he said.

Junior Lifeguard Camps continue to be a big hit with the kids BY JUSTIN BROMAN

Ocean Rescue Manager

Both levels of camp were loaded with activities designed to teach campers what it takes to be an Ocean Rescue Lifeguard. The campers started out every day with morning stretches and workouts. Being a junior lifeguard is really fun but we also like

Plan to attend the next Sunny Isles Beach City Advisory Committee Meeting BY HARVEY BUSCH

Chairman

Join the Sunny Isles Beach City Advisory Committee at our first meeting of the fall season on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 6:30 pm at the Government Center. We welcome the public to our meetings; especially new volunteers to serve on any of our committees. This report will outline a little bit about our recent activities.

As Chairman, I have the responsibility to direct our Sub-Committees and to make recommendations to the Mayor and the City Commission based upon the various committee ideas and fact findings. Our group of dedicated volunteers makes this job very easy for me. The Committee has had a successful record in advising the elected officials in ways to make our City more efficient, safe and beautiful. Along with my able Vice Chairman, Tony LoCastro, our Committee has aided the City in receiving financial grants from various federal and state entities.

Bob Welsh, Chairman of the Long Range Planning Sub-Committee is proud that by his persistence over a period of time, the unkempt and brown sections of median along 174 Street on the west end of the street, are now greener and fuller. Also, with the intervention of Commissioner Gatto, the trip hazard on the Southwest corner of 174 Street and Collins Avenue has been rectified. Dennis Stubbolo, Chairman of the Senior Action Committee, has created, planned and conducted fabulous events for our
