Every step counts: National Psoriasis Walk for Awareness Aventura Mall is partnering with the National Psoriasis Foundation to host the third annual National Psoriasis Walk for Awareness in Miami. The walk, which takes place Jan. 18, raises money to help find a cure for psoriasis, a serious, lifelong disease of the immune system that appears on the skin, causing it to itch, crack and bleed. Nationwide, psoriasis affects as many as 7.5 million people, according to the National Institutes of Health. Up to 30 percent of people with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis, a disease that causes pain, swelling and stiffness in and around the joints. People

with psoriasis are at risk of developing other serious conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and depression. "We're excited to kick-off the 2009 walk season in Miami," said Debbie Secor, National Psoriasis Foundation walk manager. "Our goal is to raise $300,000 to help find a cure and eliminate the devastating effects of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. We are encouraging members of the Miami community to join a walk team and help us meet our goal." Last year, the National Psoriasis Walk for Awareness in Miami drew more than 800 walkers, 60 volunteers and raised $185,000 in funds to support the National Psoriasis Victor Henschel BioBank. In 2007, the first year of the walk program, the National Psoriasis Foundation hosted six walks across the country including a "virtual" walk that allowed supporters to participate online. Since then, the Foundation has steadily increased the number of walks-and raised almost $1.2 million. The National Psoriasis Walk for Awareness event in Miami begins at 8:30 a.m. Participants can choose from 1K or 5K route. The event will feature live entertainment, breakfast, vendor booths, massages, face painting, goody bags and a Walk for Awareness T-shirt for all participants. Additionally, America's Next Top Model 2006, CariDee English will be at the walk to spread awareness about psoriasis and educate others that they, too, can live their dreams. To register or volunteer for the walk, please contact Debbie Secor at dsecor@psoriasis.org or visit psoriasis.org/walk

VIEWPOINT It’s time to scrutinize the Pentagon budget
Good wages are good for America
BY CHARLES KNIGHT, CARL CONETTA, AND JAMES P. MCGOVERN
BY JIM HIGHTOWER
There is nothing about the absolute size of a half-trillion dollar Pentagon budget that should concern Americans if that expenditure is necessary for the defense of the nation and if, as a nation, we are rich enough to foot the bill. But in the shadow of 9/11 and subsequent wars, that budget has been exempted from the type of scrutiny it received during the 1990s. Still it constitutes so much of our discretionary spending and has contributed so much to our deficit spending that we can no longer afford to look the other way. The last ten years have seen the Pentagon's "baseline budget" grow by 45% - from $358 billion in 1997 to $518 billion today, not including much of the funding for current wars and for Homeland Security. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the baseline budget will grow another $30 billion in coming years. And it has been reported that the Bush Administration will pass on to the Obama Administration a revised five year defense plan which will push the budget up another $80 billion. Surely our national security needs are real and enduring. But there also is an immediate need to shore-up our economy and to speed relief to Americans facing hard times Americans of all ages also want reform of the healthcare system in order to improve access to quality care and to make it more affordable. We need diverse educational investments and major investments to reduce energy dependence and to curb global warming. Meanwhile America is slipping further into recession, likely the worst since the 1930s. The next several years are expected to add several trillions of dollars to our already outstanding national debt of $10 trillion. As debt rises relative to revenue and new demands on the budget loom, we simply must use our resources judiciously. With millions of American households facing their own budget crises, the next congress will be expected to exercise more vigilant oversight of the government budget, the Pentagon's included. Since 1998 we have spent about $5 trillion on defense (in 2008 dollars), $1.4 trillion more than the 1998 leve;. About $800 billion (57%) of this increase was devoted to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Ending them would dramatically reduce the demands on the Pentagon. The remaining
$600 billion (43%) are additions to baseline spending. There is much in that figure that deserves closer scrutiny. For example we are currently adding nearly 100,000 troops to the Army and Marine Corps. These two services have suffered due to the long occupation of Iraq. But the increase is designed to be permanent. And this part of the plan begs fundamental questions: What have we learned from our Iraq experience? Is long-term, large-scale military occupation of a foreign country a worthwhile or even practical road to greater security? Apart from our current wars, the United States maintains a very large military presence abroad. Even in peacetime we keep more than 200,000 personnel on foreign soil and 30,000 sailors on more than 100 deployed ships and submarines. No other nation does remotely as much. And we are planning to do more - with the recent addition of a new regional military command covering Africa. Is this the best, most cost-effective way to influence world events? Or might more be done at less cost and more effectively through the State Department and through regional and global institutions? Finally, the Pentagon hopes to renovate US nuclear capabilities, proceed with national missile defense efforts, and explore the potentials of anti-satellite and space-based weapons. But these efforts are plagued by questions about their effects on international stability and on arms control, and about their feasibility and reliability. In the case of nuclear weapons, perhaps the best course is to retire much of our stockpile in tandem with reductions by other nuclear powers. Any adjustment in national security planning is bound to be controversial - and it should be. But we can no longer afford to shy away from that controversy. Our current circumstance demands that we enter into a broad and deep discussion about national strategic priorities, including security priorities. And this necessarily entails looking behind the curtain that shields the defense budget from more serious scrutiny. Charles Knight and Carl Conetta are codirectors of the Project on Defense Alternative (www.comw.org/pda/ <http://www.comw.org/pda/>) at the Commonwealth Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Rep. James P. McGovern is a member of the House Budget Committee and represents the 3rd Congressional District of Massachusetts.
Some U.S. Senators are real corkers. Take Bob Corker, a Republican from Tennessee. Please. He's on the committee overseeing the bailout of America's auto companies and he recently popped his cork over the pay that unionized auto workers earn. He demanded that their wages be slashed as a price of the industry getting a $14 billion bailout. "We need to put in place specific and rigorous measures," he cried. Odd that he was acting so tough toward those blue-collar folks, when he and his colleagues so meekly threw a $700-billion bailout at Wall Street bankers. Just one of those banks, Citigroup, was given $45 billion by the senators - with no questions asked. Indeed, Citigroup's CEO is being paid $216 million this year, yet Corker made no demand that he take a whack in pay. Those who are bashing workers want you to believe that union wages are exorbitant, topping $80,000 a year for a highlyskilled, experienced line worker. But, wait - total wages and benefits add up to less
than 10 percent of a car's price tag. Even if the union members worked for free, that wouldn't save the corporations. Detroit's problems aren't on the factory floor, but up in the executive suites, where $10,000-an-hour CEOs have proven to be incompetent, unimaginative managers. Yes, autoworkers make a good living but isn't that what we want for the families of our country? These workers define America's middle-class ideal. They can afford to buy homes (and cars), send their kids to college, and even pay the taxes that cover Corker's salary. By the way, the senator is paid double what auto workers get, and he doesn't have to have any productive skills, do any heavy lifting, or deliver a product. Someone should send a Henry Ford bobblehead to Corker to remind him of the auto pioneer's wisdom: Good wages are the lifeblood of the industry - and of our economy. -For more information on Jim Hightower's work - and to subscribe to his award-winning monthly newsletter, The Hightower Lowdown, visit www.jimhightower.com <http://www.jimhightower.com>

Legendary "Running of the Brides" sale coming to Filene's Basement It's shopping as a full-contact sport and the women who take part in the first ever Running of the Brides event in South Florida wouldn't have it any other way. The legendary bargain stampede will take place on January 16, 2009 at the new Filene's Basement in Aventura. If you've ever seen this event in the news, you'll know that many brides-to-be and their helpers literally pounce on dresses priced from $249-$699 that might otherwise cost as much as $9,000. "We promise our vendors that we won't reveal the labels, but I can say that these are well-known names featured regularly on the pages of popular brides' magazines," said Nicole Iaricci, Filene's Basement's wedding gown buyer. Which is why, when the doors open, there is a mad dash to the racks - held up by store employees so they don't topple - and those racks are usually stripped bare in
under a minute. Then it's time for the women to strip - down to leotards, sports bras or even underwear - to try on the gowns right on the sales floor. If it doesn't quite fit, a seamstress can do the trick, and the bride can still come out way ahead. But what happens if a petite bride found she pounced on a size 14 dress in pink chiffon instead of a size 4 in white satin? That's when the real fun begins, as the women start bartering to find the right designer or size. It's a ritual that turns Filene's Basement into an old-fashioned bazaar. Filene's Basement is located at 176th and Biscayne Boulevard in Aventura. Store hours for the sale are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Checks, credit cards and cash are accepted. Wedding gowns are not returnable. For more information visit filenesbasement.com and click on Our Worldfamous Bridal Event.

Art and Culture Center of Hollywood rolls out the red carpet BY NICOLE GREENSHER The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood recently turned their art galleries into a hopping nightclub for the evening to benefit the art center. This "Hot Hollywood Glam" event was a huge success. Hundreds turned out for a wonderful evening of great fun and excitement including Hollywood City Mayor Peter Bober. All who attended felt like a superstar at this red carpet evening that was filled with glamour, paparazzi, a live DJ, celebrity look-alikes, luxury cars, scrumptious hors d'oeuvres and flowing libations. Guests to the art-filled evening also enjoyed a trendy fashion show and great chances to bid on oneof-a-kind silent and live auction items. Some of these items included a South African Photographic Safari for two and luxury accommodations throughout the South Florida region. Art is truly an expression of the individual who opens up enough to put themselves into their work. Many famous artists have shown their depth as well as their views through art. Art can even make a difference to outstanding issues that arise in society. Being educated in art is a wonderful thing. It allows for the viewer to see and feel different emotions and to analyze the work in your own perspective. The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood makes for a flourishing creative environment where new work as well as challenging work has a chance to grow and be appreciated by the public. New regulations should help protect credit card users
Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY Here’s good news for credit card users who have been getting burned by escalating interest rates. The Federal Reserve Board recently approved final rules that would better protect credit card users by prohibiting certain unfair acts or practices and improving the disclosures consumers receive in connection with credit card accounts and other revolving credit plans. The final rules prohibiting certain credit card practices were adopted under the Federal Trade Commission Act, and are being issued concurrently with substantially similar final rules by the Office of Thrift Supervision and the National Credit Union Administration. Among other things, the rules will: • Protect consumers from unexpected interest charges, including increases in the
Free Admission
rate during the first year after account opening and increases in the rate charged on pre-existing credit card balances; • Forbid banks from imposing interest charges using the “two-cycle” billing method; • Require that consumers receive a reasonable amount of time to make their credit card payments; • Prohibit the use of payment allocation methods that unfairly maximize interest charges, and • Address sub-prime credit cards by limiting the fees that reduce the amount of available credit. In finalizing the rules on unfair credit card practices, the board carefully considered information obtained through consumer testing and more than 60,000 comment letters received during the comment period. “The revised rules represent the most comprehensive and sweeping reforms ever adopted by the board for credit card accounts,” said Federal Reserve chair Ben S. Bernanke. “These protections will allow consumers to access credit on terms that are fair and more easily understood.”

Joel and Marcos Bary expand local office options with OneBiz Center Executive Offices BY LYNN CARROLL

friends with them, allowing us to help and support them in a much better way. We're also sensitive to our client's needs. Right now, with the economy as it is, we are offering new clients several specials, such as discounted prices for specific services and, in some cases, up to six months free rent. The idea is to offer everybody the possibility to get the offices and the services they need. We want to be part of their success.
LC: What kinds of services does OneBiz Center offer? JB: OneBiz Center provides small and medium size companies not just with office space, but a whole array of services to help them grow their businesses. The idea is to provide a well-designed, comfortable space where they can do business, with the help of a highly capable, trained and willing support staff. We also provide out-of-state and international companies the opportunity to have a virtual office here in the heart of Aventura. It's a practical way for them to expand their businesses into the Miami area - or even, in some cases, an entry point to the U.S.
LC: What's your business background?
LC: What keeps you ahead of your competitors? JB: I believe that aside from our office design, space distribution and larger than standard private offices, our key differentiator is the fact that we are a family-managed business. I mean, anybody can buy nice furniture and have a great reception area - we also did that - but not everybody can offer unique treatment. I started this business back in 2006 together with my father, my brother-in-law and a good friend and

Plaza Health Network Rehabilitation and Nursing Centers receive five-star ratings The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid recently made public a list of 17 Miami-Dade County nursing facilities that have achieved five-star status on their new federal rating system. Five of the seventeen facilities listed are The Plaza Health Network Rehabilitation & Nursing Centers. The new star ratings are intended to be a summary of complex data that is available at Medicare.gov. The stars are based on three sets of ratings: health inspection surveys, quality of care measures (such as frequency of bed sores) and staff-to-patient ratios. The ratings provide the family with a guide for consideration of items important to their needs and compatible with their lifestyle. Plaza Health Network's five-star rated centers are: Aventura Plaza, Jackson Plaza, Ponce Plaza, The Plaza, and Sinai Plaza. "It takes a team of highly trained and committed professionals," said Captain Marvin Greenwald, USN Ret, and Executive VP of the Board. "We are proud of our staff of 1,480 who work 24/7 serving the 825 residents living in our homes. We believe that our Homes are their
home." Over 50 years ago, a group of Jewish women set the standard of care with their first 12 residents; that standard still exists today. Times have changed but the core values of loving care established then are continued today throughout the not-for-profit network. "We are here for families," said Hebrew Homes Secretary/Treasurer Elliot Kalus, whose parents lived at the Hebrew Home of South Beach in the 1990's. "Our mission is 'To provide the right care…at the right time…in the right place…with dignity and respect.'" As part of the decision making process, it is important to visit the center and spend time with the people who will take care of your loved one in their new home. Our teaching nursing home network with the University of Miami Center-on-Aging affiliation is open to all who may have questions or wish to visit. Individuals and families are invited to visit plazahealth.org and to schedule a tour by calling Ilene Zweig at 305-917-0406.

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER
Keep your panties on Q: A few months back I had an experience with my boyfriend that left me very hurt and confused. He has some experience sexually, but I am a virgin. We were alone in his house, and after listening to music we started to make out. The furthest we’d ever gone was for me to let him touch my vagina, and even that hurt when he did it. We were doing that for a while when suddenly he got on top of me. Then he said to trust him and he started to rub himself against me. I was terrified. I told him to stop and he did, but only for a second. I was too afraid to move, I started to cry and said to stop, but he wouldn’t. Then he went further. I started to feel him go in me. I screamed and at the same time pulled away and that’s when he stopped. He held me and said he was sorry, but all I could do was cry and I couldn’t stop shaking. I was so embarrassed and ashamed I couldn’t even look
AVENTURANEWS.COM
at him. I never told him how badly I felt, but though he promised never to do it again, I told him it would take some time before I could forgive him. A month later I had to move, so at the moment it is a long-distance affair and I don’t know if it will work out in the end. The thing that worries me is that he wasn’t wearing any protection and neither was I. Does this mean that I should get tested for any social diseases or what? I’m very confused. Can you help me? A: Since you are worried about having caught a disease, the first thing you should do is go and talk to your gynecologist to put that worry aside. If you had asked me beforehand, I would have told you to do some hugging and kissing, but not heavy petting. Since you did decide not to engage in a sexual activity, do not take off your panties and don’t let anybody touch you down there. Once he started rubbing up against you and you saw that he was not able to stop, it would have been a good idea to get up and say, “Let’s go outside to get an ice cream.” I don’t have a crystal ball. I do not know if this relationship is going to work out, but first of all go to a physician so that you can put your worries behind you. And the next time you are either with this boyfriend or another one, do not play with fire. Make sure that both of you know how far you want to go.

Miami Jewish Home & Hospital celebrates spirit of philanthropy at 2008 Founders Gala Established in 1945 as a not-for-profit 23-bed residence for widows and widowers, MJHH is now home to more than 700 seniors and a vital provider of inpatient and outpatient community based services for approximately 5,000 clients annually. For more information, visit mjhha.org
The Miami Jewish Home & Hospital at Douglas Gardens (MJHH) hosted an elegant evening of dining, dancing and celebration for 350 very special guests during its 26th Annual Founders Gala at the Miami Beach Resort and Spa. Themed "From Sea to Shining Sea," the gala was chaired by the legendary "Total Traveler" Ethel Blum Dublin and Edward L. Dublin, and saluted the Founders & Friends Cruise Program and its Cruise Captains over the last dozen years. Thanks to these outstanding leaders and the generosity of the Founders, MJHH has remained true to its mission of providing high quality healthcare to generations of South Floridians. Surrounded by nautical dĂŠcor in teal and green, the celebrants danced to the music of the band Euphoria, enjoyed a cocktail reception and a lavish dinner, and shared nostalgic memories of past cruises together. They also were serenaded by the melodious voice of Barbra Streisand - provided by surprise performer Rodi Alexander, a renowned celebrity impersonator. "The gala was our opportunity to reminisce about all the striking destinations we've visited and celebrate our shared dedication to the Home," explained Ethel Blum Dublin, the renowned author of The Total Traveler Guide to Worldwide
Cruising, about the Founders & Friends Cruise Program. "We are extremely proud of the difference this program has made in meeting the needs of our residents, tenants, and clients by enrolling new members of our Founders family." MJHH officially inducted 33 new Founders, upgraded 11 others and announced increased commitments from five established philanthropists during the evening. In addition to the Dublins, the committee overseeing this year's fabulous event was co-chaired by Vivian and Harold Beck and Hazel and Irving Cypen, with Shirley Harris as Memorial Gala Chair and Gale Goldstein Tucker as Underwriting Chair. MJHH's Founders organization, led by President Aida Politano, consists of individuals, foundations and corporations that have donated or pledged at least $50,000 to the Home. Chairman of the Board Stephen H. Cypen affirmed that MJHH attributes much of its success to the generosity of these donors, and commends the Founders for their passion and continued support. From fully independent living to 24-hour nursing care and an array of services in between, MJHH offers the most comprehensive continuum of care for seniors in the Southeast.

Another Chance BY PATRICIA C. FRANK When a year draws to a close, there are at least two things that you can be grateful for. The first is that you survived the year regardless of what happened and the second is that you get another chance. You have a chance to change things and make them different or better. If it was a difficult or unhappy year you may just want to forget it and put it behind you. Before you forget it altogether, take a moment to see if there were any positive things that happened. If you cannot find anything that was good then reflect on the events that caused your distress. Look for the lesson or lessons that you might have learned. Look for the cause and effect. Then think about the resolutions you might make that will eliminate a repetition of these unpleasant situations. No matter how things were you can fix them. You can change them. You may only be able to make small changes, at first, but you can make changes. Nothing is permanent. All things are transient and change is inevitable. Remember, whatever it is, “This too shall pass.” You have the power to help it pass. One way to do that is to make reso-
lutions. A resolution is a promise that you make to yourself. It is a firm mental decision about your intentions for your future. You are giving your word of honor. You owe your self and your resolutions the same respect you would give to anyone else. Before you resolve something decide exactly what you want. Visualize it in your mind. Feel it in your heart. Make sure that the outcome is possible. When you are very clear about what you want make a plan and make a commitment to that plan. Believe in your ability to make your life the way you want it to be. The New Year wipes the slate clean. It gives you a second chance. Be grateful for another chance. Take advantage of the opportunity to change things and to begin again. When you make a resolution you are also making a wish. A wish is a desire. It is usually for something to be better. It can also be to have something that you do not have, but wish you did. The wonderful thing about wishes is that they do come true. I wish you everything that you wish for yourself. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212- 308- 0309.

Shedding those holiday pounds BY SHARON FISCHER, M.ED., RD, LDN As we celebrate the New Year, many of us will make resolutions to lose weight. Just in time for this annual tradition is Healthy Weight Week, which begins January 18. This national observance celebrates what it means to live a healthy lifestyle. Currently, one in three adults in the United States is overweight. Experts estimate by 2015, approximately 75 percent of adults will be overweight and 41 percent will be obese. What are the health consequences of being overweight and obese? The health consequences of being overweight and obese are severe and can be fatal including: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. The good news is you don’t need to lose lots of weight to lower your health risks. Weight reduction of just 10% can improve cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels. What is a healthy weight? There is no one healthy weight for everyone. Many factors influence weight including: genetics, lifestyle choices, eating habits, and your physical fitness level. To find out if you are at a healthy weight, you can use a Body Mass Index (BMI) cal-
culator. The BMI is a number calculated based on weight and height. Physicians use your BMI, along with waist circumference, fitness level and key lab values to assess your risk of developing weight related illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes. Jackson Health System provides a BMI calculator on its Web site. How much exercise is recommended? It is recommended to exercise at least 30 minutes a day, several days a week. Try increasing the intensity or amount of time that you are active over time, but be sure to consult a physician before starting any new exercise routine. How can I learn more about nutrition, exercise and how to achieve a healthy weight? Nutritionists at Jackson North Community Hospital are available to discuss various ways you can achieve a healthy weight. To make an appointment, call 305-654-5013. For more information on Jackson Health System, visit www.jhsmiami.org. Sharon Fischer is the Clinical Nutrition Manager with Morrison Healthcare at Jackson North Community Hospital. She received a BS in Nutrition from Ohio University, and Master of Education from Miami University.

Fitness resolutions you can keep BY BARI AUERBACH While you can’t wave a magic wand and make your fitness resolution come true, there are some easy steps to take that will make it easier to look and feel your best in 2009… Avoid choosing a resolution that you’ve been unsuccessful at achieving year after year. This will only set you up for failure, frustration and disappointment. If you’re still tempted to make a promise that you’ve made before, then try altering it. For example, instead of stating that you’re going to lose 30 pounds, try promising to eat healthier and increase your weekly exercise. Break it down and make it less intimidating. Rather than setting one big end goal, set several smaller goals to achieve throughout the year that will help you to reach the ultimate goal. Then, even if you aren’t able to reach your final goal, you’ll have many smaller, but still significant, achievements along the way. Create a game plan. Write a comprehensive plan. All successful businesses start with a business plan that describes their mission and specifics on how they will achieve it. Write your own personal plan and you’ll be more likely to succeed as well. Wake up earlier to workout and cut out unnecessary calories. Tell restaurants, especially fast food places - including Subway - no cheese. Ask for salad dressing on the side and only add it as needed. Substitute water for coke. Go for baked chips instead of regular chips. Little differences add up to a lot of calories over the year. Try different things. If you always run on a treadmill and feel like you’re getting nowhere, try new things you’ve never done before. Most gyms offer a wide variety of classes…from spinning, sculpting and Pilates – to yoga, kickboxing and Latin
dance, there’s something fun and active for every body. Ask friends and family members to help you. Just be sure to set limits so that this doesn’t backfire and become more irritating than helpful. For example, if you resolve to be more positive ask them to gently remind you if you start regressing. Reward yourself with each milestone. If you’ve stuck with your resolution for two months, treat yourself to something special. But, be careful of your reward type. If you’ve lost five pounds, don’t eat a piece of cake - instead, treat yourself to something non-food related, like a facial or massage. Don’t go it alone! Get professional assistance. Everyone needs help and sometimes a friend just isn’t enough. When it comes to fitness, research studies have shown that assistance from a fitness professional greatly improves people’s success rate. Never give up! Don’t get down on yourself for not adhering to your resolution. If you fall off of the plan, just get back on it. The faster you get back to your diet and fitness regime, the quicker you’ll make up for the time you lost.
