Nordstrom and Aventura Mall 'ho-ho-host' holiday breakfast meeting BY BARI AUERBACH When Aventura Mall's Nordstrom debuted in early 2008, a spectacular grand opening event raised over $210,000 for charitable causes. In keeping with the spirit of giving back, Nordstrom and Aventura Mall closed out the year by hosting a holiday breakfast meeting for Aventura Marketing Council members invited to support the Aventura Police Department's toy drive in partnership with the Salvation Army. Talented students from the 35-piece Krop Sr. High Classical String Orchestra under the direction of Larry Davidson provided musical entertainment for hundreds of business and community leaders attending the festive event on Nordstrom's first level. On behalf of AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Greenberg Traurig, AMC president Elaine Adler wished everyone continued success in '09. But before ringing in the New Year - there was still time to shop at Nordstrom and the Aventura Mall for perfect gifts. Nordstrom general manager Tony Espinosa encouraged AMC members to take advantage of assistance from the department store's expert "personal stylists." He also pointed out, "Our policy is that Nordstrom will not be undersold. If you find a lower price, we'll match it to give you the best value possible." Aventura Mall marketing director Anabel Llopis was happy to report, "2008 was a banner year…the mall's beautiful new wing and over 50 stores opened. " She reminded guests that Aventura Mall gift cards, great for every occasion, are redeemable at over 250 Aventura Mall stores and restaurants. A Corporate Gift Card program is also available to create special incentives and bonuses for stellar employees. Before visions of shopping bags began dancing in their heads, generous AMC members donating toys applauded efforts made by the Aventura Mall and the Avenutra Police Department to help those less fortunate. While the Aventura Mall gave shoppers the opportunity to "give from the heart" by choosing an angel from the Angel Tree and purchasing a gift to make a child's holiday a little brighter - Aventura police officers could have traded blue uniforms for red Santa suits. Aventura Police Chief Steve Steinberg noted, "This is the second year that we've partnered with the Salvation Army to collect toys for underprivileged children. With your help, we've managed to collect a large amount of toys for kids who

might not otherwise have gotten a present. Thank you for helping to put smiles on a lot of faces." Thanks to Aventura Mall, there were a lot of happy gift givers and receivers around town - now looking forward to another great year of shopping. Heralded as a fashion phenomenon with fabulous stores, indulgent spas, distinctive restaurants and acclaimed art under one roof, Aventura Mall is now "your one-stop, total luxury destination." Nordstrom, a highlight of the mall's new wing, showcases shoes, cosmetics, accessories, women's fashions, men's and children's wear as well as the store's own Café Bistro. Special touches include an onsite tailor, a shoe-polishing service, oversized dressing rooms (a/k/a ''girlfriend rooms'') and boutique-style clothing departments.

Theodore Bikel's hit show, here for one week only Theodore Bikel's new play with music and songs, Sholom Aleichem: Laughter Through Tears, opened in Washington, D.C. last month to sold out performances yet only one week of extra shows could be added because the blockbuster is headed to a special engagement at The Parker Playhouse from January 28th to February 1st. "As soon as Theo told me about this exciting new work he was not only writing but would star in, I arranged to bring it to South Florida," said Arnold Mittelman, producing artistic director of National Jewish Theater and American Theater Festival. Often called the Jewish Mark Twain, Sholom Aleichem wrote the stories that gave the world Tevye the Milkman and inspired Fiddler on the Roof. After portraying Tevye in the landmark musical more than 2,000 times, Bikel brings him back to life as he portrays Yiddish literature's most beloved author and a bevy of his colorful characters. In a show the Washington Post described as "written, sung, and acted with touching reverence," Bikel portrays slices of life from Aleichem's memorable stories as he sings an enchanting trove of music from Eastern Europe played live onstage by worldrenowned musical director Tamara Brooks and acclaimed accordionist Merima Kljuco. Singing in English and Yiddish, Bikel delivers rare insight into the life and literary works of this fascinating storyteller prompting Washington Jewish Week to applaud,

Obesity is the term used to describe a high amount of extra body fat. The rates of obesity are increasing in America and in almost all other industrialized countries around the world. The most recent surveys show that about 32% of Americans over 20 are obese. That is about 72 million people. Because obesity is associated with increased risk for many diseases and medical conditions, as obesity rates rise, so do the rates of other medical problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, sleep apnea, and some types of cancer. The most frequently used measure of obesity is the body mass index or BMI. This measure is based on a person's height and weight and is a useful general guide for people to evaluate whether they are normal weight, overweight, obese, or morbidly obese. People with a BMI between 25 and 29 are considered over-

weight. A BMI of 30 or greater is considered obese, and a BMI of 40 or greater is referred to as morbidly obese. Weight loss surgery, also called bariatric surgery, has been shown to yield effective and sustainable weight loss in people who have been unsuccessful with other weight loss methods. Although recognized as the most successful treatment option for obesity, bariatric surgery is only one part of a successful weight loss journey. Aventura Hospital will be hosting monthly lectures on obesity and bariatric surgery. The lectures will be presented by Dr. Thomas Bass, MD., FACS, Dr. Brett Cohen, MD and David Grossman, MD. The lectures will take place every third Tuesday of the month, starting with January 20th, at 21110 Biscayne Blvd, Suite 101 in Aventura. VIEWPOINT America’s sixth child BY MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN On the day he died, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called his mother to give her his next Sunday's sermon title: "Why America May Go to Hell." In his 1968 call for a Poor People's Campaign, he warned, "America is going to hell if we don't use her vast resources to end poverty and make it possible for all of God's children to have the basic necessities of life." As Christians reflect on the birth of the most famous poor baby in history, imagine God seeing our very wealthy family blessed with six children. Five of them have enough to eat and comfortable warm bedrooms. One does not. She is often hungry and cold. On some nights, she has to sleep on the streets or in a shelter and even be taken away from her neglectful family and placed in foster care or a group home, with strangers. Imagine this rich family giving five of its children nourishing meals three times a day, but sending the sixth child to school hungry, with only one or two meals. Imagine this very wealthy family making sure five of its children get all of their shots, regular health checkups, and immediate access to health care when illness strikes, but ignoring the sixth child, who is plagued by chronic respiratory infections and painful toothaches, which sometimes abscess and kill for lack of a physician. Imagine this family sending five of their children to good preschools and making sure they have music and swimming lessons but sending the sixth child to unsafe daycare with untrained caregivers responsible for too many children or leaving her alone. Imagine five of the children living with books in family that is able to read to most of its children every night, but leaving the other child unread to, untalked and unsung to, unhugged, or propped before a television screen or video game that feeds him violence and sex and racially-and gender-charged messages, interrupted only by ceaseless ads for material things beyond the child's grasp. Imagine this family sending most of their children to high-quality schools in safe neighborhoods with enough books and computers and labs and well-prepared teachers, but sending the sixth child to a crumbling school building with peeling ceilings and leaks and lead and asbestos and old, old books-and not enough of themand undertrained teachers with low expectations. Imagine most of the family's chil-

dren being excited about learning, and looking forward to finishing high school, going to college, and getting a job, but the sixth child falling further and further behind grade level, not being able to read, wanting to drop out of school, and being suspended and expelled, because no one has taught him to read and compute. And no one has diagnosed his attention deficit disorder or treated his health and mental health problems or helped him keep up. Imagine five of the children engaged in sports and music and arts, in after-school activities and summer camps, but the sixth child hanging out with dubious peers or going home alone because Mom and Dad are working, in prison, or on drugs and alcohol, leaving him alone or on the streets during nonschool hours for weeks and months, at risk of being sucked into illegal activities and the prison pipeline or killed in our gun-saturated nation. This is our American family today, where one in six, 13 million, of our children lives in poverty in the richest nation on earth, more than 40 percent in extreme poverty. This is not a stable, healthy, economically sensible, or just family. Our failure to invest in all our children before they get sick, or drop out of school, get pregnant, or get into trouble is costly. Every year that we let 13 million children live in poverty costs $500 billion in lost productivity, crime, and health expenses. As our political leaders ponder our nation's choices, let them remember the millions of children living in poverty and extreme poverty and without health coverage. Let's put their needs first and not last. Our economic futures depend on it and so does our nation's soul. -Marian Wright Edelman, whose new book is The Sea is So Wide And My Boat Is So Small: Charting a Course for the Next Generation, is president of the Children's Defense Fund <http://www.childrensdefense.org/site/R?i=XA6gWvJXz7QAqNFHXlPMw..>. CDF's Leave No Child Behind® mission focuses on ensuring every child a Health Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. <http://www.childrensdefense.org/site/R?i =zX7rsCTx_ErM2HHTRRUntg..>

Eric Holder strong choice for AG BY MARC H. MORIAL As the world eagerly awaits the inauguration of America's first black president, many Americans are just as excited by the prospect of another important first -- Eric Holder as the nation's first African-American Attorney General. President-elect Barack Obama and Holder have much in common. They are both lawyers. They share a passion for pick-up basketball. They are both the sons of working class parents. And both have an up-close and personal experience with racial and economic hardship. I believe this gives them a special insight and empathy for the challenges facing so many of our citizens in these perilous times. Also like Obama, Holder is the son of an immigrant father. Obama's father was from Kenya, Holder's, from Barbados. Born in the Bronx, Holder grew up in Queens and is a product of New York City Schools, including, Stuyvesant High School, Columbia University and Columbia Law School. His father sold real estate; his mother was a secretary. Neither went to college, but both instilled in him a commitment to education and hard work as the pathway to a better life. Upon graduation from law school in 1975, Holder became a U.S. Justice Department lawyer where he served until President Ronald Reagan appointed him judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia in 1988. In 1993, he became the first African-American U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, a position he held until his appointment in 1997 as Deputy Attorney General, serving under President Bill Clinton and Attorney General Janet Reno. Holder served briefly as acting attorney general under President George W. Bush, until the Senate confirmed John Ashcroft. Since 2001,

he has served as a star attorney in the D.C. law firm of Covington Burling. On December 1, 2008, President-elect Obama announced Holder's nomination to be the 82nd Attorney General of the United States. Holder is not only eminently qualified to be the nation's chief lawyer, he is an adamant defender of the rule of law and civil rights and is also determined to restore what he sees as an eroded respect for that principle in recent years. In a speech to the American Constitution Society in June of this year, he said, “The next president must move immediately to reclaim America's standing in the world as a nation that cherishes and protects individual freedom and basic human rights.” He called for closing the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, declaring without qualification that the United States does not torture, ending the practice of transferring individuals involuntarily to countries that engage in torture, and ceasing warrantless domestic surveillance. As a long-time member of Concerned Black Men, Eric Holder also understands that increasing our already overcrowded prison population is not the way to a safe society. Too many promising lives have been wasted in that futile approach. He has said, “I think too often law enforcement people focus on the enforcement side and don't deal with the prevention side, and unless you do both, how are you ever going to really get a handle on the crime problem.” Those are wise words from the man who may soon get a chance to put them into action. Marc H. Morial is president and CEO of The National Urban League. Mr. Morial succeeds Hugh B. Price as the League's eighth Chief Executive. Mr. Morial served two distinguished four-year terms as Mayor of New Orleans from 1994-2002. During that time, he also served as President of the United States Conference of Mayors in 2001 and 2002.

Life in the City BY BARI AUERBACH ‘Patience is a Virtue’ “Hurry up and wait!” seems to be the theme most prevalent around town during the height of season – so take a deep breath, relax and remember that in Aventura, it’s perfectly acceptable to be “fashionably late” when you have valid excuses like these: Stuck in Traffic: You really have to have patience when traffic jams have even infiltrated your favorite shortcuts! When there’s no escape, the only recourse is to make the most of your idle time by doing things you’ve been meaning to get around to like deleting old text messages, cleaning out your car console, pulling pens out from under the seat and reading the latest issue of Aventura News. On a Long Line: When you’re on line waiting to return a sweater that’s way too big – try to be patient and fight the impulse to eat the 50% off holiday candy and Valentine’s Day chocolate already on sale…But if you do, the sweater will probably fit and you won’t have to wait

on line to return it after all! Mobbed at the Mall: If exiting one of the mall garages looks like it could take a while, have patience and think of it as a great excuse to go back inside and shop some more! If you’re already exhausted from walking through the new expansion area, just offer to pay someone who has the patience to wait on line for you at Starbucks while you rest your feet – or try on a pair of new shoes! Can’t Get a Table: When you’re in a crowded restaurant and you’re so hungry you could eat the beeper they gave you, be patient and keep walking around to different tables until you find diners gracious enough to share some of their appetizers with you. Worth the Wait: Everyone patiently looking forward to summer knows that soon enough, there will be plenty of parking spots and chaise lounges at the pool again – plus valets will be able to bring up your ice cream before it melts. But if you just can’t wait for the crowds to disperse – stay home and find productive things to do…On second thought - that might only contribute to the population boom!

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER

Speak up Q: I have a question for you. My boyfriend of eight years is always masturbating, at least three times a week. I never say anything to him, but it’s really driving me crazy because, I never say no to sex. It gets to the point where I have to ask for it. What can I do to stop this? A: I have a question for you: Why don’t you say something? Asking the question will not necessarily change anything, but at least it opens up the possibility. If he doesn’t know that this bothers you, what incentive is there for him to change? There’s no point in speculating why he masturbates instead of having sex with you when there is an answer that he could share with you. Now, if he refuses to talk about it, then you might want to consult a therapist, but until you at least try, don’t blame him for the fact that you are being

AVENTURANEWS.COM

driven crazy. Instead, blame yourself for remaining silent about an activity that bothers you. Q: I would like to know why every time a woman is in the kitchen, men seem to think it’s the time for fondling. Being a woman of 42 with kids, that’s the last thing on my mind at the time. What’s up with the man? A: While I understand that you’re busy preparing a meal you’re not particularly in the mood for being fondled, I don’t believe that your husband is expecting that, as a result, you are going to drop everything and have sex right there and then. Maybe he’s just showing his gratitude to you for making him a delicious meal and believes that a good way to show this is to demonstrate how much he’s attracted to you. When you’re cooking, you’re sort of stuck in one spot, so he can get his arms around you. I wonder if you back away when he tries this at other times, so he waits to get this cuddling in when he has you “on the ropes,” so to speak. That you dislike this attention so much that you would write to me hints at the possibility that there is something wrong with your relationship. So examine your reaction to this more carefully, and see if it is part of a larger problem.

Historically Yours BY BOB DIAMOND The Past Becomes The Future Noted author David Halberstam’s book “The Reckoning,” published in 1986, should have been required reading for America’s automobile industry, as it accurately predicted the current financial crisis and the proposed auto manufacturing bailout. Halberstam made a case against the selfdestructive practices of the auto industry and warned: “Our prosperity is going down the drain, jobs flowing overseas, foreigners seizing our markets and beating us at our own game with better, less expensive products to meet changing needs.” According to Halberstam, perhaps the most dramatic evidence against the auto industry was the summer of 1985, when free market Maryann Keller, regarded as one of Wall street’s most astute auto industry analysts, testified in favor of limited protectionism for America’s auto manufacturers. She had previously prophesied the rise of the Japanese auto industry and was skeptical of most of Detroit’s managerial skills. She testified that she thought the Japanese were in a

strong position and the American’s so weak, that “there was significant danger of the entire American industry collapsing.” In her opinion, there were two critical elements, namely, the Japanese, when faced with quota limits, produced better automobiles and the benefits bestowed on the Japanese by local politicians on their opening of manufacturing plants in our South enabled the Japanese to produce quality automobiles at a lower cost as compared with the American companies that were already shaky. The limited protection, she said, might give the American industry six or seven years to become competitive. Her testimony was “perhaps the most damning forecast of all.” Wit the significant change in the value of the yen, the Japanese were forced to raise auto prices. Instead of being competitive, GM raised prices while Japanese senior executives took pay cuts. By 1985, the Japanese, by years of extraordinary sacrifice, became new, powerful world financiers. In America, jobs were lost, the industrial core weakened and our auto industry made no real attempt to correct the situation. Japan produced quality cars to meet future needs, while our auto industry concentrated on sport utility vehicles and big pickup trucks, aiming only at the bottom line profit for the following quarter.

Lift for a healthy weight BY TRACILYN URRUELA, PT Many people are starting new exercise routines and getting in shape. Some believe weight lifting is for body builders, but it is an effective way to get healthier and can be done by anyone under supervision of a professional. Eating well and incorporating cardiovascular exercise is important, but you will see real changes by incorporating weights. While you may be excited starting a new routine, start slowly. Do what your can handle and take precautions to not injure yourself. Speak with your doctor before starting and follow the tips below: Warm Up Try 5-10 minutes of “cardio” activity: walking or doing jumping jacks, to get your blood flowing and your heart rate up. Next, stretch the muscles you will be concentrating on that day. For example, if you’re doing chest, first stretch your pectoral muscles, back and shoulders. Gloves and a Buddy Wear weightlifting gloves to make sure the weights are secure in your hands. Losing your grip can be dangerous, and weights can get slippery. You can buy these gloves at sporting good stores. As you progress to heavier weights, a friend can be your “spotter,” and help you put a weight back if you become fatigued. Proper Technique Never hold your breath while lifting weights because that causes your blood pressure to rise dangerously. Instead, inhale in preparation of the exertion and exhale during the execution. In other words, inhale just prior to the lift and exhale during lifting, then hold and inhale again and exhale as you lower the weight back to its resting position. Move slowly, using smooth, controlled movements. Repetitions There is no “magic number” for how

many repetitions you should do, but the general recommended number is 8-12 for muscular strength and 10-15 for muscular endurance. Rest then repeat the set a few more times. If you are a beginner, you may feel comfortable with a one- or three-pound weight. The worst mistake is using weights that are too heavy. As you get stronger, increase the number of repetitions or the weight. Isolate Choose one exercise for each muscle group including: the chest, back, shoulders, biceps, triceps, quadriceps, hamstrings, calves and abdominals. Work the large muscle groups first, including your legs, back, chest and arms. However, make sure to include all muscles in your plan. Physical Therapists are the experts in wellness and injury prevention. If you have questions, Physical Therapists are available at Jackson or the American Physical Therapy Association www.apta.org. Workout time To maintain strength, train at least twice a week, but never work the same muscles one day after the next. Seek Help if Injured If you do injure yourself or need help in building your muscles after an accident talk to your doctor about a rehabilitation program. Jackson North Medical Center’s rehabilitation program is staffed by physical therapists dedicated to relieving pain and helping restore movement and function. Individualized treatment plans provide high quality care. For more information visit the Jackson North at www.jhsmiami.org or call 305654-5043. Tracilyn Urruela, PT is Associate Chief of Rehabilitation Services at Jackson North Medical Center. She graduated from Florida International University in 1992 and is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association.

Youngsters’ Furniture BY LEE STEPHENS After 15 years of providing fine European furniture to retail stores locally and abroad, owners Ariel and Billy embarked on a venture to open Youngsters’ Furniture in South Florida. When shopping for their own children, they were disappointed to see what was available in the market. They felt that there was a need for affordable stylish furniture that would inspire their children’s creativity and would provide much needed storage. They were sure that others too would appreciate the clean lines and versatility that is found in European furniture so they set out to open up a store geared exclusively towards children and teenagers. In July of this year, Youngsters’ was born. Ariel and Billy chose only the finest lines in Europe

and acquired computer software that would allow their design ideas to come to life in 3D. They felt that by providing free computer aided designs to their clients it would make the process of customizing the room easier for the client to visualize. Youngsters’ has a team of dedicated professionals including a creative design staff, proficient factory associates, and friendly installers that provide only the best service at factory direct prices. Aside from just furniture, Youngsters’ has accessories, daybeds, and mattresses that add the finishing touches to the room. Youngsters’ Furniture is located at 100 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd. just minutes from Aventura. For more information call 954374-8024 or visit the website at youngstersfurniture.com.

Psychic Readings by Julia Spiritual Reader & Advisor • Tarot Card • Palm & Psychic Readings • Crystal Readings Aura • Past Life • Reunites Lovers Why wonder and wait. All problems can be solved today no matter what they may be.

BY BARI AUERBACH What are some of the most award-worthy exercises and fitness fashions? Here are just some of the “People’s Choice” winners… *Best for Toned Arms In the Gym: Supersetting with a tricep and bicep exercise. For triceps, place a straight bar or rope on a cable. In a straddle stance, lower your head, grasp the bar or rope and extend both arms overhead forward and then back. Alternate this tricep exercise with bicep curls using a straight bar. Using a comfortable weight, you should be able to complete three or four sets, 15 reps each for both exercises. Out of the Gym: For triceps, extend your arm straight up holding a dumbbell (different weight increments are available at Sports Authority). Then bend your elbow, slowly lower the weight behind your head and then extend your arm straight up again. Repeat for 15 reps and then switch hands. For biceps, hold a dumbbell vertically in each hand and. starting from a lowered position, raise the weights up and down simultaneously for 15 reps. Alternate these exercises for a total of three or four sets each. *Best for Strong Legs In the Gym: Squats, lunges, leg press, leg extensions – 15 reps, three or four sets of each. Out of the Gym: Squats and lunges can be done without gym equipment and can be very effective using just your own body weight. You can also place a ball against the wall, stand in front of it and do squats holding dumbbells in each hand for an extra challenge. *Best for Abs In or Out of the Gym: Lying flat on your back with legs extended straight up, lift and lower your glutes – three or four sets of 20 reps. For another very effective ab exercise, sit and hold on to the edge of a chair or bench. Then extend your legs out and crunch in with knees to chest – for a more advanced movement, let go of the seat and hold your arms at the sides of your head with elbows bent. *Best for Fitness Fashion

Durango is first Dodge SUV with hybrid powertrain Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS Dodge is offering its two-mode hybrid system in the 2009 Durango sport utility vehicle (SUV) and claims the technology will deliver an overall 25 percent improvement in fuel economy and as much as 40 percent better gas mileage in city driving. You’ll get the same Dodge Durango styling with the hybrid — short front and rear overhangs, chiseled surfaces, the signature crosshair grille, rectangular headlights that wrap around the corners of the fenders, a high beltline and flared wheel arches — with only the “Two-Mode” logos on the rear and sides denoting that this SUV has something special under the hood. The two modes of the Dodge hybrid system are derived from the low- and high-speed operation of the electric

continuously variable transmission, or ECVT. During the two ECVT modes, the system uses electric motors for acceleration (improving fuel economy) or for regenerative braking to utilize energy that would normally be lost during braking or deceleration. The energy is stored for later use in a 300-volt battery pack. There are four fixed gear ratios for high efficiency and power-handling capabilities. The first mode is designed for low speeds and light loads. In this mode, the vehicle can operate in three ways — electric power only, engine power only, or any combination of engine and electric power. In electric-only operation, the engine is shut off, with the vehicle moving under electric-only power at low speed. The result is reduced fuel consumption in heavy stop-and-go traffic. The second mode is used primarily at highway speeds. In addition to electric assist, this mode provides full power from a 5.7-liter 385 hp HEMI V-8 when conditions warrant (such as passing, pulling a trailer or climbing a steep grade). The

Dodge Durango has chiseled styling, crosshair grille, wrap-around rectangular headlights, a high beltline and flared wheel arches.

standard engine in the Durango is a 3.7liter Magnum 210 hp V-6. A 300-volt battery pack provides electric power for the system, and fits in the vehicle without reducing passenger space. A rectifier under the hood converts AC to DC to power conventional 12-volt accessories, including interior lighting, climate control and the sound system. Chrysler’s MDS — standard with the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine — seamlessly alternates between the four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and

eight-cylinder mode when more power is in demand. Base price on a Dodge Durango Limited Hybrid 4x4 (20/22 mpg) is $44,540, about $5,255 more than a Durango Limited 4x4 without the hybrid technology.
