Hampton Inn hosts Aventura Police Dept.’s Ernie Long “Credit Card Fraud” program At a recent meeting of the Aventura Marketing Council’s Business Development Committee at the Hampton Inn Hallandale Beach Aventura, Crime Prevention Coordinator Ernie Long enlightened members on the proliferation of fraudulent credit cards and reviewed the warning signs of bank card fraud as well as how to identify fraudulent credit cards. Discussion included customer behaviors, such as large purchases without regard to size, style, color or price; creating distractions or rushing you through the sale, and purchases made at the opening or at the last minute when the store is closing. Steps to follow if you are suspicious include holding onto the customer’s card if you can do so safely; notifying your supervisor and calling your authorization center to request a “Code 10” authorization. “Ernie Long has presented a number of crime prevention seminars for our members, from identity theft to self-protection, and each and every one is extremely valuable,” said Peter L. Fishel, CPA, chairman of the Business Development Committee. For more information on the Aventura Marketing Council, call (305) 932-5334 or visit aventuramarketingcouncil.com

STAR Academy at Krop Senior High School presents “Fiddler on the Roof” Is it the hauntingly beautiful song, “Sunrise, Sunset” that you remember….or perhaps it’s the comical “If I Were a Rich Man” that brings back the memories of the legendary musical, “Fiddler on the Roof” based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem. Students from the Music and Theatre Departments of Krop Senior High School want to take you back to the days of Tevye, a milkman who is trying to keep his family’s traditions in place while marrying off his three older daughters in pre-revolutionary Russia. The musical will follow the life of a Jewish family torn apart by war, love, marriage and poverty, but above all, this is a story about forgiveness and the struggle of modernizing one’s beliefs and values. Starring seniors Julio Liverpool as Tevye and Marissa Goldstein as Golde, they join a cast of 180 students who sing and dance their way through the production, capturing the humor and the tragedy of what happened to a group of people. “Fiddler on the
Roof is a very special play to present,” said Larry Davidson, director of the STAR Academy. “Our students are learning so much about history and tolerance as the story unfolds.” Dr. Matthew Welker, principal of Krop Senior High, added, “We are very proud of our STAR Academy Music and Theatre Departments under Larry Davidson’s direction . They have given so much of themselves to this production, and we encourage our community to come to a matinee or evening performance that is sure to have them singing in the aisles!” “Fiddler on the Roof’ will be presented at Krop Senior High School Auditorium, 1410 County Line Road, North Miami Beach on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Jan. 22 – 24th, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, January 25, there will be a 2 p.m. matinee. Tickets are $10 each and the box office opens one hour before each performance. Call (305) 652-6808 x 167 for reservations. Exploring your inner artist with Paula Turk According to the New York Times, "now that we're hip-deep in what has been called both the 'creative economy' and the 'conceptual age,' no one can afford to ignore the artist within." Helping others to see from that perspective led sculptor and photographer Paula Turk to found ArtShare, LLC, a company offering workshops to promote an understanding of the creative process. Each two-hour session helps participants explore their imaginative side by responding to artistic stimuli. The easy-to-do, yet stimulating exercises are offered in 15minute segments in a relaxed, no-lecture format that encourages group participation and collaboration. The result of the course, according to Turk, is to reveal another way of looking at and approaching the world. "The workshops are designed to increase the powers of observation, communicate feelings thru visual media, translate inner vision thru written expression and release the ability to creatively and more effectively

problem-solve." The best part, says Turk, is that no previous art or writing ability is required. In addition, there is no limitation with respect to age, gender or profession. ArtShare sessions are held in both public and private environments and are limited to 12 participants. Workshop fees are $29 per person and include most materials. For more information and to register, email Paula at myartshare@aol.com, or call 305864-9955.
Next on the table, couples can feast on herb crusted sea bass, with grilled asparagus and baby spinach in a saffron broth and Colorado lamb chops, drizzled with mint bordelaise, baby vegetables and a polenta heart. To finish off the decadent meal, dessert features a chocolate truffle heart with Grand Marnier crème and fresh berries. The four-course meal at Costa Grill is available for $100 per person. Republic Federal Bank supports Toys in the Sun Run benefiting community children Republic Federal Bank, with branches throughout Aventura, Miami and Doral felt that kids deserved some red carpet treatment during the holidays. To help that dream come true, Republic Federal was a sponsor of the Toys in the Sun Run. The bank donated money, auctioned artwork, sold raffle tickets and set up a tent at the event with free giveaways. This year over 30,000 motorcycles, many with toys strapped to the handle bars, formed the largest motorcade in the world as they drove through Broward County. The final destination was Markham Park in Sunrise. Here, the estimated 25,000 toys and many individual and corporate financial donations were collected for kids. Republic Federal decided to get involved because the distribution of toys and funds go to local children and organizations. One of the key recipients is the Joe DiMaggio Children's hospital in Hollywood. "Participating in this event is a wonderful way for us to give back to the community," said Walter Cook, CEO of Republic Federal. "The fact that the donations and toys go to children means a lot to our employees since we are a family bank and almost everyone here is a mom or dad. We collected toys at the bank, set up a large tent at the event, sold raffle tickets for the charities and had lots of fun in the process." Republic Federal also matched, dollar for dollar, all income from the raffle tickets sold by its employees. Republic Federal Bank is a Miami-based financial institution founded in 1979. Historically Yours BY BOB DIAMOND TEDDY ROOSEVELT AND THE CHRISTIAN MEN OF PROPERTY According to historian Roger Butterfield (The American Past), in May, 1902, 140,000 anthracite miners from eastern Pennsylvania struck to improve working conditions and increase their average pay of $560 a year. George F. Baer, the chief spokesman for the mine owners, refused to have dealings whatsoever with the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), led by its youthful president, John Mitchell. Baer called Mitchell a “fomenter of anarchy and a criminal.” The UMWA was organized in 1890 but almost disappeared after losing a big strike in 1894. Mitchell, who had worked in the mine at age 12, succeeded in bringing the Union back to life. Public opinion turned to favor the miners with publication of letter Baer wrote, with pious convictions, to a Pennsylvanian, whose area had been hit hard by the strike: “I beg you not to be discouraged. The rights and interests of the laboring man will be
protected and cared for – not by the labor agitators, but by the Christian men to whom God in His infinite wisdom has given control of the property interests of this country.” President Roosevelt was “worried over the effect of the coal shortage on the coming Congressional elections.” Despite lacking the legal authority, on October 3, in response to his telegrams, Baer and Mitchell stood face to face in the president’s office. Roosevelt acknowledged that he could not force a settlement but pointed out that a winter coal famine would be a catastrophe for millions. “I appeal to your patriotism.” Mitchell immediately offered to submit to arbitration. Baer objected to meeting with a criminal, even if requested by the President. Roosevelt was furious. “He sent word to J.P. Morgan, Baer’s banker, that the army would seize and operate the mines unless the owners agreed to arbitrate. Baer sulked but backed down under pressure from Morgan. The miners went back to work and eventually the arbitration panel awarded a ten percent pay raise, however, the mine owners, led by Baer, still refused union recognition. For the first time, however, a President had intervened to settle, rather than break, a strike.

Colleagues from Bookkeepers USA, Coane & Associates, Christine Lee's, City of Hallandale Beach, Andrew Goldstein Photography, Hampton Inn, Berman Chiropractic and Fabian Realty marveled at Ocean Prime's novel, predominantly seafood and steak menu featuring intriguing reinventions like White Truffled Deviled Eggs, Diver Scallops with Slow-Braised Short Ribs and Chilean Sea Bass with Glazed Carrots in a Champagne Truffle Sauce. Teams from Dolphin Stadium, the Miami HEAT, Florida Marlins, Oakwood Corporate Housing, MultiLingua, Acquamare and Nature's Best making new connections also applauded new Ocean Prime beginnings like hearty salad and appetizer options including the signature salad with Romaine, spinach, Granny Smith apples, goat
cheese, candied walnuts, and sherry mustard vinaigrette. Financial experts from BankUnited, CitiBank, Eagle National Bank, Ameriprise Financial, Data Boutique, HSBC and Frye Financial accounted for over 20 Ocean Prime special extras, potatoes and sides including sea salt vinegar fries, candied yams with marshmallow brulee, black truffle macaroni and cheese, creamed spinach, and jumbo asparagus with hollandaise. While exchanging business cards, executives from Minuteman Press, MetLife, Greater Miami Region of Hadassah, Crowne Plaza Hollywood Beach and the Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort noted Ocean Prime is the perfect place for power lunches, cocktails or a night out on the town. Rich woods, high ceilings and sheer drapes complement the warm ambiance emanating from two private rooms with seating for up to 32 guests. Guests can also dine al fresco on a stylish outdoor terrace or relax at the piano bar. Busy professionals from Miami Jewish Home & Hospital, Bloomgarden, Goudreau & Rosen, Intimacy BraFit Stylists, Talent Realty, Fashion Factor and The Toner Company vowed to take more time off to enjoy a pleasurable Ocean Prime dining experience, noting the new Happy Hour a.k.a. "Prime Hour" available in the lounge is Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. featuring delicious appetizers, wines by the glass and handcrafted cocktails. After the networking reception, many AMC members staying for dinner concurred with what even the most discerning diners are saying about Ocean Prime… Everything was top class, perfect and nicely presented. The staff was very attentive and I also discovered the best desserts on the planet…Crème Brulee and 10 Layer Carrot Cake…Did I mention they play really cool music and there's a live pianist? This place is a hit! For Ocean Prime reservations, phone 305-931-5400 or visit ocean-prime.com

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER
LOOK BEYOND THE SURFACE Q: When dating someone, how long should you wait for an attraction to develop, or should an attraction be there from the very first meeting? A: First of all, I want to congratulate you for asking this question. Many people won’t even consider dating someone to whom they are not attracted. Of course, that means they are relying on superficial criteria to decide whom to date, and that is a big mistake. What’s important is not what a person looks like or what car they drive, but what they are like on the inside. So my advice is that you not be too quick to judge people. Now, there are people whose appearance will turn you off – for example, someone who dresses very sloppily – and that’s OK. But I do suggest that you give people a fair trial, looking beyond the surface to find what’s attractive about them inside, not just on a superficial level.
Q: Are most men better at foreplay today that they were 10 years ago? A: It’s not just a question of being better, but there was a time when too many men didn’t even know that foreplay existed. And there were also women who didn’t know this, and they would go through a lifetime of having sex but not really enjoying it. I also think men today are not only more aware of the need for foreplay, but are getting better at it. They’ve discovered that if they can make their partner enjoy sex to the maximum level, they’ll wind up having sex more often also enjoying it more themselves. Q: What does it mean when a women’s nipples stand out? A: One meaning could be that she is cold. Both men’s and women’s nipples become erect when they feel a chill. But many women also find that their nipples become erect when they are sexually excited. Some men find the same thing, but not as many as women. If you are gently touching a woman’s nipples, there is a very good chance that they will get erect. Notice that I said “gently.” If a man plays with a woman’s nipples too roughly, instead of her becoming excited, it will be painful, which will have the opposite effect.

Aventura Hospital and Medical Center hosts AMC Speed Biz event
Andres Prieto, Aventura Hospital; Aventura Comm. Michael Stern, Stern Bloom Media; Dan Palmer, Aventura News
pital is one of only 269 hospitals to receive the 2008 HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award™. The study of quality at the nation's 4,971 hospitals places Aventura Hospital in the top 5% for overall clinical quality. The SpeedBiz meeting was held in the hospital's mezzanine, where AMC members networked over coffee and bagels before moving on the Lightning Biz high-speed networking on the speed-dating model. The format guarantees a few minutes of face time with at least ten other businesspeople in the community time enough for a brief introduction and exchange of business cards. Lightning Biz continues to get rave reviews from everyone who tries it. "It allows me to make the best use of my time," says Lenny Markus of Minuteman Press. "I meet 20 people in one hour, and walk out with real business leads by 9 a.m. What more can I ask for?" "We met at least a dozen
members that we had not met before and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves in the process," said Harriet Robkin of Executive National Bank. "I was also able to reconnect with several of my old friends. I will be back - and I recommend attendance to anyone who wants to meet fellow members in a fast-paced networking
environment." For more information Aventura Hospital, call 305-6827000 or visit aventurahospital.com. For more information about Aventura Marketing Council, call 305-932-5334 or visit aventuramarketingcouncil.com

Rubin Talks Real Estate Multiple Home Owners BY DENISE RUBIN I remember the day I answered my phone and the voice on the other end said I’m looking for a home in the Miami area. He said he was staying at the Tides Hotel in South Beach and was interested in me showing him property and wanted me to know his name was Tony Robbins. He went on to say that he already had a home on the Gold Coast, a home in Vancouver, and a home in Fiji among others. I interrupted him and said, “Oh this must be “The Tony Robbins” the “Best” motivational speaker ever. I walked over hot coals at one of his seminars. He said yes, he was, and he picked me to represent him because he knew I was the “Best” Realtor. This was very exciting and rewarding to me. It was not unusual at all, as many of my clients have homes in New York and the Hamptons as well as condos in South Florida. Others have homes in Aventura and condos in Aspen or homes in Dubai and condos in Sunny Isles. The beach is a more popular choice for my international clients. A third of all homes sold during the past year were
second homes - either to be used as a vacation home or investment property. The National Association of Realtors conducted an “2008 Investment and Vacation Home Buyers Survey” It showed that 12% of home sales were vacation homes while 21% were purchased for vacation properties. The NAR report further stated that many house holds seek additional home in a desirable destination. South Florida sure qualifies! Buyers see this current market as an opportunity to take advantage of the below market bargain prices to acquire an investment property. Some buyers want to enjoy a vacation with the sun and sand so they purchase a second home here. Others strictly make a dollar and cents decision for investment purposes when buying a second home or a condo here. Either way you may be surprised to know that a third of all home sales in the past year were second homes. Guilt trip BY PATRICIA C. FRANK Guilt is a feeling of remorse for a real or imagined offense. It is the result of a thought, feeling or action that you decide is wrong or bad. It is natural for human beings to feel guilt both for the things that they do and for the things that they do not do. A trip is a journey or excursion that you take. It is usually gives you pleasure. A guilt trip is a thought or feeling that usually gives you pain. If you feel guilty you may feel the need to be punished and pain becomes the punishment. There are those who believe that psychological and emotional issues manifest themselves in the body. For instance, they believe that middle back problems come from guilt. They believe that to heal you must let go of the past and of the feelings associated with the past. You must let go of your guilt and move forward without, “the monkey on your back.” Guilt has many unhealthy side effects. It is self-destructive and can cause selfdefeating behaviors, resentment, anxiety, sadness, survivor’s guilt, shame and intense self-blame. It diminishes self – esteem. It
can be used against you and it can be used to manipulate you. If you eliminate guilt from your life, you will be a happier, healthier person. Here is an exercise to exorcize guilt. Pick a quiet time without interruptions. Take a pen and paper and at the top of the page write, I don’t have to feel guilty that… Then write down the things that come into your mind. For instance, that I was born, that I don’t make him/her happy, that I don’t make more money, that I want to be happy, that I want to do things my way, that I make mistakes, etc. etc. When you have finished your list, write “Even though these things may be true, I am still entitled to feel good about myself and accept myself. I am still loveable. I am worthy of health and happiness. There is no need for guilt or pain.” Another technique is to write out the things you feel guilty about on separate pieces of paper and then put them into a box or bag and throw them out or burn them. Once you let go of your guilt, be vigilant. Do not let anyone lay a guilt trip on you. There are so many other wonderful trips you can take. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305788-4864, 212-308-0309.

Seeing your way to better memory BY DR. STEVEN WIGDOR It’s long been known that clear vision is important for children to properly learn. Not only for the ability to clearly see the board, but to be able to read and study, in an efficient, fatigue free manner. Now there is evidence to support what many adults already believe. That “exercising” their mind helps keep them alert and possibly fends off any age related cognitive decline. Some activities that are considered good “exercise” are reading, and doing crossword puzzles. The ability to do activities of this nature rely on quality vision. It is therefore not a surprise that one study concluded that a two-year decline in vision was associated with memory decline in elderly adults”. The decline in vision had a significant effect on memory decline, but not on a decline in verbal ability or processing speed. A decline in hearing was not associated with decline in any cognitive domain. Visual function does not just rely on having good glasses, contact lenses, or

LASIK. Muscle balance and early detection of vision threatening conditions is important. Glaucoma and cataracts, as well systemic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure need to have their effect on your eye’s health periodically diagnosed and evaluated. Progressive damage due to a disease such as glaucoma can usually be stopped, but damage done, can not be reversed. Seeing well, and having eyestrain free vision is important to most people. Although never has its significance in helping to maintain cognitive ability, especially memory function into our later years, been documented. It has also long been shown that memory and overall health is related to proper diet and exercise. Exercising both your mind and body, while supplying proper nutrition certainly makes the most sense. Slimming Secret: Tap Your Foot Can you believe crazy fitness claims? BY BARI AUERBACH The United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently released a report that studied 300 weight loss ads and found that 40 percent of them made at least one false representation and 55 percent of them had at least one unsubstantiated claim. So is there really any truth behind some of the “crazy” fitness claims plastered all over magazine covers and celebrity endorsements for expensive diet plans? “Slimming Secret: Tap Your Foot”: Whether they were leg bouncers, toe tappers, or thumb twiddlers, people in a study who had a habit of fidgeting burned, on average, nearly 350 extra calories per day! But for all those who really want to “tap” into weight loss success, eliminating that bag of chips, caramel Frappuccino or slice of chocolate cake would probably be a much better “slimming secret.” “Eat all day and never get fat!”:
This “eat more, weigh less” nutrition strategy could actually be very effective as long as the meals and snacks you’re eating all day aren’t full of fat and calories. Eating six or seven times a day can keep your metabolism revving and help prevent binging. Balanced meals and healthful snacks including lean proteins, low glycemic carbs, fruits, vegetables and “good” fats like avocado, egg yolk, flaxseed oil and nutbutter can be eaten all day - and as long as you don’t serve yourself Cheesecake Factory-size portions, odds are you’ll never get fat!
“Rock-hard abs in just three weeks!”: It’s not how many times you’re crunching – it’s what you’re munching that will determine whether or not you develop “rock-hard” abs. You can do a million crunches, use all the ab machines at the gym with extra weights or spend a fortune on infomercial gadgets promising to flatten your stomach – but the flat out truth is that if you want to see that sixpack - you have to stop guzzling them plus just say “no” to the pizza, burgers and fries. When you attain a lean physique via sound nutrition, the results from all your hard work in the gym will really start to show in your abs and all over your body! “New miracle fiber blocks calories and stops fat storage!” Any weight-loss claim that includes the word “miracle” should automatically trigger suspicion.
But on the bright side, miracles can happen when you “block” calories and “stop fat storage” by enhancing healthful eating with an effective exercise plan combining cardio and weight training. “I did the math and lost 100 pounds!” While the FTC may be making valiant attempts to rid the market of unethical advertising practices, the reality is the FTC has its hands full trying to go after companies making false health and fitness claims because no matter how many they close down, two or three more spring up in place. The only way for the public to be protected is through education. Consumers who are wise to the deceptive practices of weight-loss ads will hopefully have enough discernment to recognize a fake when they see one.

The latest unemployment figures show more of us are losing our jobs than at any time since the end of World War II. A staggering 524,000 workers were laid off in December. And economists predict unemployment will get even worse through at least the first half of 2009. It’s believed our national unemployment rate could grow from about 7.2 percent, where it stands today, to almost 10 percent or worse later this year. President Barrack Obama is readying his own $800 billion U.S. economic revitalization plan. It includes tax cuts for working families and businesses, as well as a broad job-creation package including public works projects aimed at fixing aging roads, bridges and public buildings. However, it’s also generating a lot of Congressional opposition. That’s because the U.S. budget deficit is expected to climb

to $1.2 trillion dollars this year. We’re stuck between the rock and the hard place. We can go deeper into debt printing more money to bail ourselves out of the recession while at the same time risking that we will devalue the strength of the U.S. dollar around the world. Will it work? If you look to Wall Street as a measure of investor confidence, it’s actually still holding up pretty well. However, some analysts predicted a severe market crash before the end of last year. Fortunately, that didn’t happen. But Wall Street will be challenged severely over the coming months as more and more bad economic news dominates the marketplace. Meanwhile, the rest of us are still looking for help from Washington. We voted for change back in November. And it can’t come fast enough for millions of families here and around the country that are still struggling to keep working, to stay in their homes and to pay their bills. That’s why we all need our own “Family Economic Revitalization Plan” right now. Simply put, we can’t afford to wait for Washington to finally help Main Street the way it’s already helped Wall Street. Watch Al Sunshine’s “4 Your Money” reports weekdays on CBS4 News beginning at noon.
