Student Connection visits New World School of the Arts Over 200 at-risk students from the Aventura Marketing Council's (AMC) Dade Partner schools had the opportunity to witness something they don't always see in their schools…….students at the New World School of the Arts absolutely loving what they do! As part of the AMC's outreach with its Education Committee chaired by Eileen Glastein of Bnai Zion Foundation, monthly field trips are scheduled for these students to expand their career horizons. Known as the Student Connection, this program is sponsored by Miami-Dade Commissioner Sally Heyman, Wachovia Securities and Vegnani Consulting. Honorary Chair for over ten years has been Dade County State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle, who brings the students to her offices at the beginning of each school year to talk about issues such as domestic violence, in addition to careers available with the State Attorney's Office. "One of our most anticipated field trips each year is the visit to the New World School of the Arts, where Dean Daniel Lewis arranges for an hour-long performance of his top students….combining all forms of dance and singing," said Glastein. "The look on their faces as they watch students their own age soaring through the air, stomping out a beat or singing show tunes is absolutely priceless," she added. ArTech has docked! Internationally acclaimed architect Carlos Ott debuts Aventura's most high-tech luxury residences ArTech, the contemporary vision of Carlos Ott, breaks through traditional barriers of condominium design to create a nauticalinspired structure reflecting its waterfront environment, advanced technology and marina amenities. Drawing on the world-renowned architect's inspiration from the aesthetics of the 20th century's finest machines, the building features slopes and lines similar to the contours of cars, planes and boats. Fashioned more after an aerodynamic vehicle than a traditional building, ArTech's boomerang shape showcases curvilinear floor plans that provide for longer windows, while maximizing views of the Intracoastal Waterway to the east and south. The cruise-ship-like design takes full advantage of the close to 900 feet of direct
water frontage, creating an overall look that complements the boats that will be moored on its docks. Lain out horizontally along this stretch, the building offers the endless amenities of a large property, as well as the advantages of a low-rise building at only 10 stories high. In collaboration with Architect Charles Benson, Ott's exceptionally innovative and inimitable architectural signature has created landmark structures that are redefining destinations and leading cultural evolutions in major cities, from opera houses to grand theaters in China, Canada, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, France, Argentina, Germany, and his native Uruguay. Ott's designs feature spiraling cones, blade shapes or forms that recall wind-filled sails. Recent projects have
gained him fame from Beijing and Dubai and back to South Florida again for Jade Beach, a futuristic twin-tower condominium Fortune International developed in Sunny Isles Beach. Developers, Fortune International's Edgardo Defortuna and Shefaor Development's Claudio Stivelman and Gilbert Benhamou, joined forces to create ArTech as Aventura's largest and most advanced new condominium community. A residential icon of imaginative design and immaculate detail, ArTech is unlike anything ever seen. ArTech boasts more than 40,000 square feet of leisure space, more than any condo development in Aventura and one of the largest in Miami-Dade. Outdoor amenities include use of a 177-foot triangular infinity-edge swimming pool, a waterfront whirlpool spa, two tennis courts and private marina. Limitless indoor amenities to please every indulgence include a state-of-the-art Wellness Center with yoga/pilates, dance studio and spinning rooms; a full spa with Turkish bath, massage rooms and saunas; and indoor racquetball court. A community/party room includes billiards, reading and card tables, a 32-seat private movie theater, and a fully functional entertainment kitchen. The developers of Artech envisioned not only a beautiful and amenity-rich building, but a Smart Building, a technologically advanced residence. From entertainment, to security, ventilation and lighting, all electrical functions can easily be controlled with the press of a button from touch-screen monitors
in the residences, or from anywhere in the world via a laptop or cellular phone. The building's dynamic curved shape gives all 232 residences a spectacular view of the surrounding bay and barrier island. Floor plans range from one-bedroom, one-bath Bachelor Pads to grand three-level Private Collection Penthouses. Two-level Bay Homes are spacious offerings, with up to two bedrooms plus a den. Two-bedroom, threebaths plus den Marina Homes open to private gardens along the waterfront. Residences are priced from $325,000 to more than $1.3 million. ArTech is located at 2950 NE 188 Street, Aventura. For more information, please call 305-466-2600 or visit artechmiami.com

Life in the City BY BARI AUERBACH ‘Cost Cutting’ Given the state of the economy, just about everyone’s finding ways to cut costs – but here in Aventura the savings strategies are especially unique‌ *Thrifty Shopping: Less Rolex more Timex; less Dom Perignon more Domino’s pizza; less Coach more coach tickets; less Chef Allen’s more Chef Boyardee; less Blue Point oysters, more blue light specials; less BMW’s more VW’s; less maid service, more self-service; less flat screens – unless you’re not more or less flat broke! *Frugal Fashions: Instead of buying two fancy dresses to wear out to dinner – only buy one. Then make sure you pick restaurants far from each other to avoid running into the same people who admired your dress the night before. *Friends with Benefits: There are a lot of costs you can split with friends like personal training sessions‌and if you really want to get hard core about fitness, you can share dessert too! *Mix and Match: Put on a cute pair of
shoes from Pay Less with a Prada bag; wear a tie from Target with an Armani suit; maybe it’s Maybelline mascara behind those Gucci shades; and no one has to know Supercuts made it possible to afford that super smelling designer fragrance. *Secret Recipes: If you’re creative in the kitchen, you can save a lot on your food bill by bringing home fast food and spicing it up a bit. For example, turn a drive-thru burger into a gourmet burger by adding your own baked brie and truffles‌Enrich a veggie sub with your own smoked salmon‌And if you put that salad in the plastic box on a china plate and toss in some Maine lobster you can still say, “I’m dining on a budget!â€? *Travel Tips: Add up how much you spend on gas per month and if the cost of hiring a driver isn’t that much more, take the limo! You might also consider riding the “Aventura Expressâ€? shuttle bus so you can also avoid having to pay expensive fines if those new cameras catch you running red lights. *Tax Break: Aventura still has the lowest property tax rate in all of Miami-Dade County – so what can lucky residents do with the money they save? Go on a shopping spree at Aventura Mall of course!

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER
Torn between love and disgust Q: I’ve been going out with my boyfriend for a few months now and I’m starting to fall in love with him. The only problem is that he has had relationships with men before, which I find revolting. I am having difficulty getting over the thought of his past. I’m torn between love and disgust. How can I get over my feelings? A: There are several issues here. First of all, I’d advise you to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases, and in particular, AIDS. Then I would try to put this relationship to the test of time. If over time he is certain that he does not need to have sex with men in order to feel fully sexually satisfied, and if during that same time you can focus on what you like about him and forget about what you don’t, then perhaps the romance will flourish. Q: I would value your opinion on my situation. For the past five months I have been living with my boyfriend. We are both in our 50s. In the beginning, sex was great. We did all kinds of good things. As
time went on he seemed to lose interest. I spoke to him about it and I would initiate most of the time. He responded sometimes but would only do it in the missionary position, nothing really hot. One time I came home from work to find that he had rented a porno flick and masturbated. I was upset since I find myself frustrated from the lack of good sex like we used to have. He did not invite me to view the film with him. I’m very open on sex and he knows that. I’m thinking of ending the relationship before it gets any deeper although I hate to since we both profess to love each other. But what am I to do about a person who likes to watch porno by himself and masturbate? A: It’s difficult to do more than speculate. Considering that he is in his 50s, perhaps he’s developed a problem having an erection and finds it easier to masturbate. If he had a problem becoming erect a couple of times and now worries about having an erection every time he has sex with you, he will have developed an anticipatory anxiety that will definitely make it more difficult for him. If that doesn’t work, the only hope for this relationship is to go to a counselor. If he refuses to go, the outlook for the two of you would be bleak. You certainly shouldn’t remain in a relationship that constantly leaves you frustrated, so if that is the case, you will have to say good/bye.

Average Joes as likely to face tax trouble BY STEVEN N. KLITZNER Celebrity lands in tax trouble. That story always finds a way into your newspaper or your favorite news website. After all, who hasn’t read about Brazilian race-car driver and “Dancing with the Stars” winner Helio Castroneves? The 33-year-old faces trial in Miami on charges he failed to report $5.5 million in income from 1999 to 2004. You read about folks like Castroneves, but it’s important to remember there thousands of folks just like you who face life-changing charges because they decided to cheat a little on their taxes. Average people are having tax troubles and facing prosecution, even prison time time, nationwide. You read all about Castroneves. But you didn’t read about these people, did you? And don’t be fooled: It’s not just the people who evade six figures or more who get caught.
The small-timers are also facing prosecution. Every year, hundreds of middle class people across the country are indicted for filing a false tax return. Now that we’re in 2009, the IRS’s aggressive enforcement policies are unlikely to change. In fact, they are likely to become more aggressive. Take, for example, what IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman said of enforcement during a recent speech. “Think of a detective working a case who may employ everything from eyewitness accounts, physical evidence, paper trails and the cooperation of law enforcement officials in other states,” Shulman said. “That’s similar to what we’re doing with the following tools (of enforcement).” Steven N. Klitzner is a Certified Tax Resolution Specialist, a member of the American Society of IRS Problem Solvers, a consulting member of the Tax Freedom Institute, and an Aventura attorney. You can contact him at 305-682-1118 to obtain a free subscription to his newsletter titled The IRS Times & Inquirer or visit his website at www.FloridaTaxSolvers.com.

The Apple Organization adds Interactive Division to augment its award-winning PR services When The Apple Organization set out to redesign its website to more accurately portray its full scope of services, talented staff and calibre of clientele, it dawned upon them: the award-winning PR agency needed to add yet another layer of expertise. And so, after a search to recruit the best in the business, the Interactive Division was born. To date, the division has posted a 5% revenue gain for the company. Headed by 30-year marketing industry veteran and web design pioneer Marc Abrams, Apple's dedicated division offers its own potpourri of services including consultation, which encompasses analysis, development and implementation of integrated interactive marketing programs; as well as website design and development and online media buying. Among the popular tactics Apple can deploy for clients are online news dissemination via web 2.0 applications, Search Engine Optimization, Pay-per-Click, database marketing (E-blasts) and online transactions. "Our websites are developed not merely to be pretty but to generate awareness and ultimately leads, which is really an extension of traditional public relations," offered Abrams. "All of our programs are designed to enhance client exposure on the web and tested to maximize ROI using the latest metrics. This way,
clients can see what they are paying for in an industry where it was historically difficult to quantify results." "2009 marks Apple's 30 years in the business," added Phyllis Apple. "With three decades of success, we wanted to up the ante and there is no better way to do that than present clients with website and interactive marketing services that are in line with today's technology. We can now move as rapidly as the industry allows us to." The Apple Organization is based in South Florida however it represents clients throughout the state. Its client roster spans the industries of real estate, hospitality, architecture/interior design, retail, and professional services. The firm was recently named "Best PR Company in the Americas" at the CNBC Americas Property Awards 2008 in association with the New York Times. In addition, the agency was listed among Inc. 5000's list of "Fastest Growing Private Companies." In 2007, Apple won South Florida Business Journal's coveted Business of the Year and the firm was a finalist in the Best Places to Work in both 2006 and 2007. The Apple Organization is located at 17840 West Dixie Hwy. in North Miami Beach. For further information, call The Apple Organization, 305-937-1581 or visit appleorg.com
Comm. Sally Heyman co-designates "Detective James Walker Jr. Drive" after slain officer Comm. Sally Heyman recently honored the memory and service of Detective James Walker, Jr. in a street co-designation ceremony at the corner of NE 17th Avenue and South Glades Drive. Carnegie Foundation selects MDC for prestigious community engagement recognition After a rigorous selection process, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching announced it has selected Miami Dade College (MDC) for its 2008 Community Engagement Classification. MDC was recognized for its extensive community involvement initiatives - particularly for helping first generation and disadvantaged students attend college and for its well-known service-learning program. The Carnegie Foundation awards the distinguished classification as part of an effort to encourage more higher-education institutions to reach out to the world around them. The foundation established the designation in 2006 as part of a broader overhaul of the system it uses for categorizing higher-education institutions. "We hope that by acknowledging the commitment and accomplishment of these engaged institutions, the foundation will encourage other colleges to move in this direction," says Carnegie Foundation President Anthony S. Bryk. MDC dedicates significant funding to community engagement activities and infrastructure, some of which goes to the Center for Community Involvement; the Earth Ethics Institute; Miami Book Fair International, and other programs. Additionally, many of the College's employees, particularly its leaders, are actively involved in a variety of serviceoriented projects. MDC President Dr. Eduardo J. Padr贸n has also written many articles on the subject, most recently, "Learning to Serve," an article for Hispanic Magazine about the power of service-learning to transform education. He also wrote recently, "The Hunger Within," an

article that appeared in El Nuevo Herald about the world hunger crisis and need for action. Within the last year, the college secured more than $11 million dollars in grants to support worthy projects such as a refugee vocational education project with the Florida Department of Children and Families: academic support for disadvantaged middle and high school students from Take Stock in Children; a youth summer arts camp sponsored by Miami-Dade County; and the College Reach-Out Program, which supports first generation, economically and educationally disadvantaged students. "In the future, we'd like to continue advancing our community involvement initiatives by further incorporating them into the overall culture here at MDC," said Dr. Padr贸n. "We are extremely grateful for the recognition and will use it as a springboard to expand our reach in the community." For more information, visit mdc.edu

Important safety information from Florida City Gas Florida City Gas is proud to provide one of the most efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly energy choices you can make for your home or business. Every day, underground pipelines safely transport natural gas to homes and businesses throughout the area. Florida City Gas is responsible for the maintenance of pipelines in our service territory. As part of our commitment to safety, we meet or exceed state and federal pipeline safety regulations, routinely perform extensive qualitycontrol checks, advise residents how to recognize and prevent natural gas leaks, and work closely with officials to develop emergency response plans.
Pipeline Markers like the one pictured indicate the general area of the pipeline and right-of-way, but not its exact location or depth. They aren’t present in all areas, so it’s important to always call before you dig. If you detect an emergency, call the phone number
on the pipeline marker to contact us. If a right-of-way is adjacent to your property, it’s your responsibility to ensure no new installations of landscaping or physical structures interfere with Florida City Gas’ access to the pipeline, and with our ability to keep the pipeline safe through routine monitoring and maintenance as required by federal or state safety regulations.
Know What’s Below. Call Before You Dig. Excavation work, including digging or plowing around a home or business, is the most common cause of natural gas emergencies. Before digging around your property, state law requires you call 8-1-1, a statewide, toll-free number, to have your utility lines professionally marked. You must call at least three business days before digging, excluding holidays, so underground utility lines can be located and marked—free of charge—before you begin your project.
If you smell gas, act quickly. Although natural gas pipeline incidents are extremely rare, these tips will help you identify a possible gas leak and know what to do. LOOK for blowing dirt or continued bubbling of standing water. LISTEN for a hissing or roaring sound near a natural gas appliance or line. SMELL for the distinctive rotten-egg scent of natural gas. Take action if you detect even a small amount of this odor. LEAVE the area IMMEDIATELY if you detect a natural gas leak. Don’t try to identify the source or stop the leak. CALL Florida City Gas at 888-352-5325 or 911 once you are safely away from the possible leak site. Stay away from the area until a Florida City Gas representative or emergency personnel indicate it is safe to return. REMEMBER while near a possible natural gas leak, do not touch or use anything that may cause a spark. This includes lighters, matches, cigarettes, flashlights, light switches and telephones. Wait until you have left the area to use a cell phone. 1

One of the many advantages of employing an interior designer is the access gained to their pool of tried and trusted building contractors. If however you wish to venture into this task alone we are going to help you out with some tips. The secret to getting an accurate quotation is to supply your contractor with detailed specifications for the works to be done. We’ve seen job specifications that instructed the contractor to “remove old kitchen cabinets” but made no mention of disposing of them. The contractor charged extra to cart the debris off-site. This cost would have been included in the original estimate had it been specifiied. Sit down and think hard about the scope of the work and put your specifications down on paper. Send these specifications to your contractors before they come to survey the site to do their estimate. The specifications will encourage them to ask searching questions and offer opinions. There are two prices that will come into being during the life of the project. The first will be the estimated price quoted
before the work starts; the second will be the price you are eventually charged. All jobs will have variations that occur during works due to unforeseen events. At this point it is worth mentioning that a contingency fund of 10% is essential to any building project for unexpected expenditures. Don’t be tempted to enter into a cash deal by doing so you will have no proof of payment and if something goes wrong you have no legal recourse. Once you’ve chosen your building contractor you should agree on a start date and reasonable project duration and along with the contract amount and a payment schedule. You can insist on a penalty clause if the project is not completed by the date agreed but remember the contractor my cut corners to meet that date. Construction work is always going to be stressful and disruptive but if you have chosen your contractor well and maintained a good level of communication throughout the project then you have a high chance of a rewarding experience that delivers the results you desired. mra (michael rosenthal associates) phone: 305.592.0040, fax: 305.592.5144, e-mail: info@mradsgn.net, website: www.mradsgn.com
