should a catastrophe occur. The Plan envisions using all fuel and mechanical solutions, with consideration given to regional availability, as long as the solutions free us from foreign oil dependency." Black explained The Plan advocates demand restraints. "Cars will have to be retrofitted; employers will have to gather employees in central locations to get to work; companies may not be able to have as many offices; mass transportation will have to be free. None of these solutions are going to be easy - but the degree of pain will be determined by our alacrity in responding to the problem. Are we going to wait until the oil stops - or are we going to start the day before?" In the book's introduction, Black writes, "My commitment was to reveal a dark history to help ensure a precious future‌life as it may become if our society remains addicted to oil, and if those who wish for the downfall of Western society succeed in using our dependence as a weapon against us.

Wounded Warriors receive royal sendoff from Turnberry Associates and K-Kids For the second year, the Wounded Warriors made Turnberry Associates’ Residence Inn at Aventura Mall their ‘homebase’ before their “Soldier Ride” on specially-adapted cycling equipment from Aventura to Key West. The Wounded Warriors program provides rehabilitation opportunities and helps raise public awareness for the military who have been severely injured during the current war on terror. The project began when several individuals took small, inspired actions to help others in need. When news of the first wounded service members returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq reached veterans and their friends, they created the project to provide tangible support for those most severely wounded—helping them on the road to physical and mental health. Working with the Aventura Marketing Council who invited their local schools to create cards for each of the 40+ Wounded Warriors participants, Turnberry Associates was thrilled that the K-Kids from VAB Highland Oaks Elementary would be back this year again with their outstanding show of support. Principal Dr. Kim Rubin and K-Kids Director Edie Fine were only too happy to have their K-Kids create cards of well-wishes, and involve the parents again for home-made baked goods and treats. Over 20 youngsters and their parents showed up at the Residence Inn at 6:30 a.m. on January 15th, bearing cards, and banners and baked goods. Students from Aventura Waterways K-8 also created cards for the Wounded Warriors. By 8 a.m., the soldiers were on their way to Miami Beach, Miami, Tavernier, across the Seven Mile Bridge, through Key West and ending at the USS Mohawk WWII Coast Guard Cutter on January 17th. Soldier Ride organizer Woody Groton said, “Having the children greet our wounded soldiers and interact with them on our kickoff morning is so meaningful…it’s the highlight of our trip each year.” “We are honored to host these men and women, as they are the true American heroes,” said Philip Goldfarb, President and Chief Operating Officer for Turnberry Associates, owners of the Residence Inn. “Last year, our organization was profoundly touched by the Wounded Warrior Program. They provide an invaluable service to these courageous men and women, and we are proud to continue to support the organization and the Soldier Ride program.” For more information, visit woundedwarriorproject.org

VIEWPOINT Six ways to stabilize our economy
Unleash the arts: One percent of the stimulus
BY ALISA GRAVITZ
BY E. ETHELBERT MILLER AND MELISSA TUCKEY
Everyone now understands that the economy is broken. While many name the mortgage and credit-default-swap crises as culprits, they are only the most recent indicators of an economy with fatal design flaws. Our economy has long been based on what economist Herman Daly calls “uneconomic growth” where increases in the GDP come at an expense in resources and wellbeing that is worth more than the goods and services provided. When GDP growth exacerbates social and environmental problems-from sweatshop labor to manufacturing toxic chemicals-every dollar of GNP growth reduces well-being for people and the planet, and we're all worse off. Our fatally flawed economy creates economic injustice, poverty, and environmental crises. It doesn't have to be that way. We can create a green economy: one that serves people and the planet and offers antidotes to the current breakdown. Here are six green-economy solutions to today's economic mess. 1. Green Energy-Green Jobs A crucial starting place to rejuvenate our economy is to focus on energy. It's time to call in the superheroes of the green energy revolution-energy efficiency, solar and wind power, and plug-in hybrids-and put their synergies to work with rapid, large-scale deployment. This is a powerful way to jumpstart the economy, spur job creation (with jobs that can't be outsourced), declare energy independence, and claim victory over the climate crisis. 2. Clean Energy Victory Bonds How are we going to pay for this green energy revolution? We at Green America propose Clean Energy Victory Bonds. Modeled after victory bonds in World War II, Americans would buy these bonds from the federal government to invest in largescale deployment of green energy projects, with particular emphasis in low-income communities hardest hit by the broken economy. These would be long-term bonds, paying an annual interest rate, based in part on the energy and energy savings that the bonds generate. During WWII, 85 million Americans bought over $185 billion in bonds-that would be almost $2 trillion in today's dollars. 3. Reduce, Reuse, Rethink Living lightly on the Earth, saving resources and money, and sharing (jobs, property, ideas, and opportunities) are cru-
cial principles for restructuring our economy. This economic breakdown is, in part, due to living beyond our means-as a nation and as individuals. With the enormous national and consumer debt weighing us down, we won't be able to spend our way out of this economic problem. Ultimately, we need an economy that's not dependent on unsustainable growth and consumerism. So it's time to rethink our over-consumptive lifestyles, and turn to the principles of elegant simplicity, such as planting gardens, conserving energy, and working cooperatively with our neighbors to share resources and build resilient communities. 4. Go Green and Local When we do buy, it is essential that those purchases benefit the green and local economy-so that every dollar helps solve social and environmental problems, not create them. Our spending choices matter. We can support our local communities by moving dollars away from conventional agribusiness and big-box stores and toward supporting local workers, businesses, and organic farmers. 5. Community Investing All over the country, community investing banks, credit unions, and loan funds that serve hard-hit communities are strong, while the biggest banks required bailouts. The basic principles of community investing keep such institutions strong: Lenders and borrowers know each other. Lenders invest in the success of their borrowers-with training and technical assistance along with loans. And the people who provide the capital to the lenders expect reasonable, not speculative, returns. If all banks followed these principles, the economy wouldn't be in the mess it's in today. 6. Shareowner Activism When you own stock, you have the right and responsibility to advise management to clean up its act. Had GM listened to shareholders warning that relying on SUVs would be its downfall, it would have invested in greener technologies, and would not have needed a bailout. Had CitiGroup listened to its shareowners, it would have avoided the faulty mortgage practices that brought it to its knees. Engaged shareholders are key to reforming conventional companies for the transition to this new economy - the green economy that we are building together. It's time to move from greed to green.
Our society is built not just by bone and flesh but also by imagination. We're wealthy when we create. We're poor when poetry is missing from our lives. But how do we sustain our creative lives during a time of economic crisis? Clearly, our country is in trouble. We lost over one million jobs in 2008. Families are losing their homes. Young people are wondering whether there will be jobs for them when they graduate. We're told this is the worst recession in 30 years and that it's probably going to get worse yet. President Barack Obama's election was a call for change. It's also a testament to what Americans can accomplish if we put our minds to it. What will be the fate of the arts during this recession? Some states have cut funding for their arts commissions. Many schools have cut or abandoned arts and music programs in the past decade because of budget crunches and pressure from No Child Left Behind, which requires schools to regularly test math, English, and sciencebut doesn't address arts expertise, foreign languages, or other important subjects. Obama aims to create three million jobs. Congress is poised to pass a $600 billion dollar stimulus package aimed at creating jobs to invigorate the economy. The package harkens back to Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration (WPA) programs, which employed over 3.4 million Americans between 1935 and 1943. WPA workers built hundreds of thousands of miles of roads, streets, and highways. They repaired bridges, created public buildings, parks, and landing fields. They also worked in the arts.
The WPA funded over 40,000 artists, writers, musicians, theater workers, and performers. Public support made it possible for artists of modest means to dedicate themselves to their work. The WPA supported Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, John Steinbeck, Sterling Brown, Orson Welles, John Houseman, Burt Lancaster, and many other great talents, known and unknown. Our generation deserves no less. The Institute for Policy Studies recently launched a petition calling for 1% of the stimulus package to be spent on the arts. This arts stimulus initiative wouldn't just boost funding for public programs. The money could create workplace arts and reading programs, increase fellowship and scholarship support for artists, foster cultural exchange programs with other nations, and support artist- and writer-inresidence programs in schools and public libraries, and more. Proponents also are calling for the establishment of a cabinetlevel post for culture and the arts in the Obama administration and beyond. What if there were no art? How much is the world worth without color? What if we had jobs but no music during our breaks or when we returned home? The arts enliven and build our communities, preserve our cultural heritage, and inspire us to be more thoughtful and engaged the world. Whatever we face in the coming months, let's face it with creativity and courage. E. Ethelbert Miller is the chair of the board of the Institute for Policy Studies --www.ips-dc.org <http://www.ips-dc.org> -and Melissa Tuckey is the co-director of the Split This Rock Poetry Festival. Historically Yours BY BOB DIAMOND THE NEW YORK DRAFT RIOTS If President Lincoln had originally stated that emancipation of the slaves was the purpose of the Civil War, it is highly questionable if the majority of his soldiers, owning no slaves, would have sacrificed their lives in a cause in which they had minimal interest. Not only was racism widespread, but freed slaves also represented economic competition to the laboring class. Although Lincoln despised slavery, his stated purpose for the war was preservation of the Union. The situation boiled over into a riot in New York on July 11, 1863, when the first draft in American history was to take place. The idea of forcing men into service was extremely unpopular. According to Doris Kearns Goodwin (Team of Rivals), New York Governor Seymour, who was elected on an anti-war platform, stirred up racial hatred by announcing, “the federal government had exceeded its constitutional authority by forcing men into an ‘ungodly conflict’ waged on behalf of the black
man.” A provision of the Conscription Act also allowed the wealthy to avoid the draft by either paying $300 or providing a substitute. Opponents of the draft argued that this was “a rich man’s war and a poor man’s fight.” Some 500 people stormed the building where the draft was conducted, stoned the drafting officers and set fire to the building. The mob, including many poor Irish immigrants, turned its vengeance mainly against the Negroes. Terror unfolded as the rioters beat their victims to death and “strung their bodies on trees. An orphanage for black children was burned to the ground, hundreds of stores were looted and dozens of policemen lost their lives. More than a thousand people were killed or wounded.” The riots continued for five days, until regiments of soldiers arrived and maintained peace. When the draft was resumed, everything calmed down. The Irish immigrants were persuaded that they were being drafted to save the Union. New York’s 69th “Fighting Irish” Regiment was recognized by historians by their 100 Medals of Honor as a testament to their valor. Gov. Seymour will forever be remembered in shame for his “incitement to riot.”

Interior Designer Stuart Geller suggests a home makeover for your Valentine BY LYNN CARROLL
PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE LC: Last year you hosted "At Home with Stuart Geller" at Bloomingdale's Aventura; the year before you were featured on NBC 6's annual "Best of Home & Design" special. Will you be featured in any design events this year?
LC: What's your idea for an unforgettable gift this Valentine's Day? SG: Now that people are spending more time at home, they're more aware of those little areas that need attention. Maybe they're recognizing that their kitchen and appliances are antiquated, the wallpaper has faded or the sagging upholstery needs refluffing. So why not surprise your sweetie with a gift of design? I've found this is especially appreciated by those who have trouble making design decisions themselves.
SG: It's already begun! In January, I was back at Bloomingdale's for a "pre-wedding wedding party," where I showcased some of my projects and gave individual consultations to couples on how important it is to have a plan when you start decorating a new home. And I was right up to date for that - we just had the Winter Market at the Design Center of the Americas, which presented the newest lines and trends in design.
LC: What's happening with the interior design industry in these uncertain times? SG: I'm seeing a silver lining to this economy. I just met with the famous American designer Carlton Varney, and we were saying that the ideal client right now is not the couple with an unlimited budget but those who had their homes done eight or ten years ago and are now ready to revisit their home environment for a nice makeover. Instead of major renovations, people are coming to terms with their needs right now. In a lot of cases, those needs have changed. Maybe as they get older they need bars installed in the bathrooms. Maybe they need a dedicated space for their home computers. Some people are now living full-time in homes that were originally bought and furnished as secondary residences. These are things a designer might not normally want to invest time in,
LC: Can most newlyweds afford professional interior design services?
SG: That's a common misunderstanding. Sometimes people are afraid to come to a designer, especially a well-known one, but in most cases we can work within their budget. Photo by Maxine Usdan
but our time is more flexible in this economy. So people whose design needs are modest can get the services of a firstrate designer.

Spinal cord stimulation an option for chronic pain, says Mt. Sinai's Dr. Michael Baskin BY LYNN CARROLL While pain can be treated in many ways -including surgery, injections, physical therapy and medication -- it's important for patients to be aware of some of the new techniques that are now available so that they can find the treatment that is right for them, says Dr. Michael Baskin, a pain specialist at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He cites spinal cord stimulation as one example. "For people with chronic, intractable pain due to injury or nerve disease," the doctor says, "spinal cord stimulation may be an alternative, particularly when other treatments fail. It involves implanting a device about the size of an iPod underneath the skin. The device emits low-level electrical stimulation to spinal cord nerves, disrupting the sensations a person feels. "Pain," Dr. Baskin says, "is thereby reduced or alleviated by 50% or more. While the spinal cord stimulator is not a cure, it will help a person reduce or eliminate pain medications and lead a more active and normal life." While it's a small device, the doctor cautions it does need to be implanted.
"Even using minimally invasive outpatient surgery," he says "there are the risks associated with any surgical procedure, including infections, bleeding, headaches and allergic reactions." Since spinal cord stimulators use electric impulses as well as magnets, there are a few precautions users must keep in mind, says Dr. Baskin, a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician. "You'll be given special identification to carry with you at metal-detector checkpoints -- in airports, for example," he says. "Items that function with magnetic strips such as bank or credit cards, video cassettes, computer disks and some watches and clocks, may need to be stored at least two inches away from where the stimulator is implanted so as not to interfere with their functioning." The doctor says not everyone can benefit from this therapy. "Yet if you have chronic pain," Dr. Baskin says, "it might be worth a visit to your spine specialist to see if you're a good candidate for a spinal cord stimulator." ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER
WHICH DIRECTION FOR SIX-YEAR AFFAIR? Q: I am married and having an affair with a friend of the family. He is also married, and his wife is also a good friend. I know that this is just a lustful thing, but I have strong feelings for him and he for me. My friends think I should end it, but I just can’t turn my feelings off like a light bulb. This has been going on for about six years now. What should I do? A: Something doesn’t make sense to me here. It’s not clear how you could conduct this affair for so long without either spouse realizing that something was going on. And you say it is only lust, but you also admit to having feelings for each other. What has happened lately that prompted you to write to me? Are your feelings for this man growing stronger? My advice to you is to go and see a counselor. Open up to this person and discover what you really feel. Maybe you should end the affair before anyone gets hurt, or maybe you will discover that your marriage is what needs to be ended. But since you are worried about this, go and speak to a

professional counselor. Q: I have been married three years to a man 26 years my senior. At first our relationship and sex life were very good, but for the last year, our marriage has been under a lot of stress, and I think we are growing apart. To add to the strain, I have lost interest in sexual relations with him. It has come to the point that thinking about it makes me nauseous. What could be the problem? Do you have any suggestions to help rekindle anything that might be left? The history of our relationship actually goes much deeper, but I would appreciate any advice that you could give from these brief details. A: Since the history of your relationship is much deeper than you indicate and things were fine initially, I would not think that his age is that much of a factor. This stress you speak of probably comes from some other issues, and you must get to the bottom of them if you are to save this marriage. I don’t think it’s enough for you to read my book “Rekindling Romance for Dummies.” I would guess receiving some flowers or going on a cruise will not repair the damage. Therefore you need to see a marital therapist. Go by yourself first, and see if the counselor also needs to talk with your husband. I have to say that your letter’s tone makes me pessimistic about the relationship, but since you did write to me and do have some desire to fix things, there is some hope, so don’t delay in getting some professional help.

Could Municipal Bonds have a place in your portfolio? BY BRUCE A. DAVIS Senior Vice President Morgan Stanley Individuals are the single largest group of owners in today’s municipal bond marketplace.1 Why? Because municipal bonds are unique securities, generally offering investors features such as taxexempt, predictable income and high credit quality on many issues. Municipal bonds are tax-exempt2, fixed income securities that represent the debt obligations of municipal entities (states, cities, counties etc) seeking to raise money to fund projects for the public good, such as building schools, highways and hospitals. The issuer promises to repay principal in full at the bond’s maturity, and to pay semi-annual interest income – which is generally exempt from federal income tax, and in most cases, state and local taxes as well. Is your Federal Income Tax Bracket 25% or Higher? One of the most compelling reasons to own municipal bonds is that interest income is generally exempt from regular federal income tax. Under most state laws, ‘home-state’ municipal bonds’ interest income is also exempt from state and local taxes. As a result, municipal bonds may generate higher net (after-tax) yields than taxable bonds of similar quality and maturity. Your federal tax bracket plays an important role in determining whether a taxable or tax-exempt security is the better choice for you.
As a general guideline, the higher your tax bracket, the more likely you are to potentially benefit from owning municipal bonds. As illustrated below, an investor in the 33% federal income tax bracket would have to earn a 6.72% yield from a comparable fully taxable bond to match a 4.50% yield from a tax-exempt municipal bond. Tax-Exempt Yields v Taxable Equivalent Yields Federal Income Tax Rates Federal Tax Bracket 25% 28% 33% 35% Tax-Exempt Yield% Taxable Equivalent Yield (TEY) % 3.50 4.67 4.86 5.22 5.39 4.00 5.33 5.56 5.97 6.15 4.50 6.00 6.25 6.72 6.92 For illustrative purposes only, and does not represent any specific investment Nonetheless, when choosing any fixedincome security, you need to do more than just compare yields to find the bond that is most appropriate for you; an assessment of risk and return is also important: Consider the Impact of Interest Rates All fixed income securities are susceptible to interest rates fluctuations; generally, if interest rates fall, bond prices rise and inversely, if interest rates rise, bond prices fall. Because bonds are typically issued with prevailing mar-
ket yields, rising market interest rates causes new issues to have higher yields than existing bonds, forcing down prices on existing bonds. Generally, longer term bonds are more sensitive to interest rate changes, and the more likely their value is to fluctuate. However, longerterm bonds generally have higher yields, thus compensating for the time principal is exposed to interest rate fluctuations. Conversely, bonds with short-term maturities (up to a year) normally experience relatively minimal changes in price as interest rates fluctuate, but also typically provide lower yields. Another point to consider: If you hold your bonds to maturity, your principal will be returned in full, yet, if you sell your bonds prior to maturity, the price you receive may be more or less than your original purchase price. Credit Risk You should consider every bond’s creditworthiness; if an issuer is unable to meet its financial obligations it may fail to make interest and principal repayments. Although municipal bonds are generally considered to be high quality investments, not every issuer has the same tax base or sources of revenue. Consider Call Provisions Many municipal bonds have call provisions; the issuer has the option to redeem the bonds prior to maturity. If a bond is called, you bear the risk of reinvesting the proceeds at a possibly lower rate of return, depending on market conditions, potentially impacting your ability to plan your future income stream.
Are Municipal Bonds for you? As well as generating tax-exempt income, the municipal market is attractive in terms of investment quality, maturity, sector focus, and geographical diversity. Municipal bonds could be an important diversification and tax planning tool within your fixed income portfolio. 1 Source: Federal Reserve Board Flow of Funds Account, September 2008 2 Municipal bonds are generally exempt from federal income tax. Typically, state or local taxexemption applies if securities are issued within one’s state or city of residence. If you are subject to the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), interest on ‘private activity’ municipal bonds is considered a preference item. 1. What is the difference between traditional liposuction and “Smart Lipo”? Traditional liposuction is performed under local or general anesthesia. Once the patient is fully anesthetized, large incisions are made in the skin through which a steel rod (cannula) is passed. The surgeon utilizes the cannula to break up tissue by repeatedly thrusting it deep into fatty deposits. Subsequently, the fat is removed via the use of a suction device. The procedure is traumatic and routinely leads to localized swelling, bruising and bleeding. It is not uncommon for the patient to suffer from significant pain which results in many days of down time. Ultimately, skin laxity and ripples may develop over the liposuctioned area leading to unsightly contour abnormalities. On the other hand, during laser lypolysis (Smart Lipo) tiny one millimeter incisions are placed in the skin. After local anesthesia is infused a laser is passed into fatty deposits and these deposits liquefied without trauma to tissue: the liquefied fat is then removed utilizing a power aspirator. Swelling and bruising are uncommon after surgery because trauma is almost totally avoided. Many patients are able to return to work the very next day. The skin overlying the liposuctioned area is usually without laxity or ripples. This is because the delivery of heat during the procedure causes the skin
2. Can laser therapy help treat acne? There are four major factors responsible for causing acne. They act together to cause the characteristic pimples, whiteheads and blackheads associated with this problem. They are: (1) overactive oil glands leading to (2) a blockage of the skin pores (3) the subsequent proliferation of a bacteria know as P. acne (4) which produces chemicals that alter the composition of the oil: this all results in very irritated skin leading to chronic inflammation. Various treatments are used to help sterilize the skin (tetracycline) and decrease inflammation (Retin-A and Accutane). These treatments are fraught with side effects and oftentimes are only partially effective. If acne remains an ongoing problem, treatment with an IPL (intense pulse light) Laser should be seriously considered. IPL Laser energy is able to penetrate deep into hair follicles where bacteria remain sequestered in collections of oil, subsequently killing the organism and helping to sterilize the deeper layers of the skin. Once P. acne is killed, inflammation of the skin markedly decreases, pores open and oil production diminishes. Acne can be placed into remission for long periods of time after treatment with an IPL Laser. It is recommended that a single treatment be performed every three months to maintain the acne in a quiescent state. Disappointment BY PATRICIA C. FRANK When you disappoint someone you fail to fulfill an expectation or desire that they have. Disappointments are one of the most unpleasant experiences in life especially if you are the one who is let down by someone. Usually the person who is disappointed suffers more than the person who disappoints. Almost every situation in your life has the potential to disappoint. Each situation produces a level of discomfort that varies from event to event and from person to person. The plumber who doesn’t show up, the product that does not work as promised, the raise that is not forthcoming are examples of some of the everyday occurrences that are disappointing. The spouse who cheats and the partner who steals are disappointments that carry more pain than the everyday minor annoyances. When you are young even tiny disappointments seem to be larger than life. A Father who is not at the game or an outing that is cancelled can feel like a catastrophe. Children may take it personally. They may internalize it and decide that they are not
loveable or cared about. These feelings affect adults as well. As an adult you may also feel angry, disrespected, devalued and discarded. It is a blow to your ego and sense of well-being. Often it is not the event itself that hurts but the underlying message it sends and the feelings it generates that hurt the most. You can also disappoint yourself which is usually worse than letting others down. Your fear of being disappointed can keep you from facing things or asking for things. Because everyone knows what it feels like to disappoint someone, most people go out of their way to avoid letting others down. Loved ones and family are a top priority. Sometimes, it is unavoidable because of your own needs and desires. One way to lessen the pain for others is to let them know in advance. Don’t wait to tell them at the last minute. Act early so they can get used to the change. Give them a year for some things like the Holidays. You may feel uncomfortable if you have to let someone down but sometimes it cannot be avoided. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

‘Extreme meal makeovers’ BY BARI AUERBACH If you’ve got too much on your plate to focus on figuring out how to eat nutritious foods that will help you keep your fitness resolutions – here are some “extreme meal makeovers” providing nutritious and easy quick fixes… Breakfast Before: Bowl of cereal or energy bar…The problem with this typical “on the go” breakfast is the grams of sugar in most cereals as well as the milk. End even though you may think that energy bar is good for you – check the label and you may be surprised to find it has as much sugar as a candy bar. Breakfast Makeover: Instant oatmeal (plain flavor) only takes a few minutes in the microwave and now you can buy pourable egg whites so you can eliminate cracking time! Add a green vegetable like spinach to make an omelet and a few slices of avocado and you’ve got the perfect energizing, morning rush breakfast! Lunch Before: Foot-long turkey sub on white with mayo and cheese, a bag of Sun Chips and a bottle of Arizona flavored iced tea…Even if you’re choosing to “eat fresh” be careful not to corrupt a healthful choice like turkey with high calorie condiments, chips that will go straight to your hips and sugary drinks. Lunch Makeover: Six-inch turkey sub on whole wheat with mustard – no cheese – a bag of apple slices and a bottle of water…If you frequently eat out and want to lose weight or stay in shape phrases like “no butter; sauce on the side; grilled not fried; and steamed not sautéed” should become part of your ordering out repertoire. Dinner Before: Salad with Ranch dressing, dark meat chicken, baked potato, asparagus in Hollandaise sauce…Eating a large high caloric meal in the evening can be deadly to any diet – especially if you
can’t remember how many pieces of bread you ate and then go to bed shortly after eating. Dinner Makeover: Salad with balsamic vinegar and olive oil, white meat chicken, sweet potato (lower glycemic than white potato), steamed asparagus…By adding a leaner protein and cutting out fattening salad dressing and sauces you can enjoy a healthful dinner, be thinner and consider yourself the biggest winner! Snack Before: From granola and flavored yogurts – to even those new berry tea drinks at Starbucks (a grande Iced Berry Chai Infusion has 46 g. sugar/ 51g. carbs) – beware of all the sugar hiding in snacks that seem deceptively dietetic. Start reading food labels and ask for the nutrition info before you start sipping that grande “skinny vanilla latte” (28 g. sugar/30 g. carbs) that may not be helping you lose those last 10 pounds. Snack Makeover: Portion control is key – but any of these snacks are smart choices: Nuts like almonds and walnuts; strawberries (great source of calcium too!); hard boiled eggs; turkey slices; Jay Robb whey protein shake (individual packets available at Whole Foods Market) small can of white tuna in water; hummus; guacamole; cottage cheese; low fat cheese; whole grain crackers; new acai berry sugar-free Jello cups.

Important safety information from Florida City Gas Florida City Gas is proud to provide one of the most efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly energy choices you can make for your home or business. Every day, underground pipelines safely transport natural gas to homes and businesses throughout the area. Florida City Gas is responsible for the maintenance of pipelines in our service territory. As part of our commitment to safety, we meet or exceed state and federal pipeline safety regulations, routinely perform extensive qualitycontrol checks, advise residents how to recognize and prevent natural gas leaks, and work closely with officials to develop emergency response plans.
Pipeline Markers like the one pictured indicate the general area of the pipeline and right-of-way, but not its exact location or depth. They aren’t present in all areas, so it’s important to always call before you dig. If you detect an emergency, call the phone number
on the pipeline marker to contact us. If a right-of-way is adjacent to your property, it’s your responsibility to ensure no new installations of landscaping or physical structures interfere with Florida City Gas’ access to the pipeline, and with our ability to keep the pipeline safe through routine monitoring and maintenance as required by federal or state safety regulations.
Know What’s Below. Call Before You Dig. Excavation work, including digging or plowing around a home or business, is the most common cause of natural gas emergencies. Before digging around your property, state law requires you call 8-1-1, a statewide, toll-free number, to have your utility lines professionally marked. You must call at least three business days before digging, excluding holidays, so underground utility lines can be located and marked—free of charge—before you begin your project.
If you smell gas, act quickly. Although natural gas pipeline incidents are extremely rare, these tips will help LOOK for blowing dirt or continued bubbling of standing water. LISTEN for a hissing or roaring sound near a natural gas appliance or line. SMELL for the distinctive rotten-egg scent of natural gas. Take action if you detect even a small amount of this odor. LEAVE the area IMMEDIATELY if you detect a natural gas leak. Don’t try to identify the source or stop the leak. CALL Florida City Gas at 888-352-5325 or 911 once you are safely away from the possible leak site. Stay away from the area until a Florida City Gas representative or emergency personnel indicate it is safe to return. REMEMBER while near a possible natural gas leak, do not touch or use anything that may cause a spark. This includes lighters, matches, cigarettes, flashlights, light switches and telephones. Wait until you have left the area to use a cell phone. 1
Emission estimates based on the Department of Energy’s electric power emission estimates for all generation energy sources from its Annual Energy Outlook.
