Ultimate Boxing & Fitness hosts Student Connection “The BEST field trip we’ve ever had!”…..”Can we do this again?”……”I learned so much!”

These were some of the comments from students participating in the Aventura Marketing Council’s Student Connection field trip to Ultimate Boxing & Fitness in North Miami Beach. Each month, the Education Committee of the Aventura Marketing Council, chaired by Eileen Glastein, Bnai Zion Foundation, takes a trip to a different site to learn about career options. Miami-Dade Comm. Sally Heyman sponsors the buses so approximately 90 students from the Council’s seven Dade Partner schools can discover new careers.

Gail Gensler, partner in Ultimate Boxing & Fitness, said “ The students were completely engaged! We had six stations set up for them…..we taught them how to box and kickbox, participate in a spinning class , receive instruction in ju jitsu, as well as learn about flexibility and nutritional counseling. My trainers really enjoyed working with them, and said there were some exciting potential prospects for their teams. It truly was a joy to have these students with us!”

According to Eileen Glastein, “The whole event was so impactful on the children …. you couldn’t help but share their excitement and enthusiasm. VIEWPOINT Global warming?...No sweat Why Homeland Security is so beloved

Weather warming, But who cares?

It only hurts, The polar bears.

See how quickly we found a cure for global warming? It was a breeze. All it took was a worldwide recession (depression?).

Now auto sales are shrinking, factories shuttering, thermostats dropping, lights dimming, oil wells slowing, travel diminishing…all that stuff.

Of course there's a backlash. As fuel prices sink, many Americans are back to buying bigger cars, especially now that SUVs have piled up on dealer lots and flaunt irresistible discounts. Still, many folks remember their singed wallets from the 2008 oil spike and aren't likely to buy big again anytime soon. Social progress always dawdles like that, but eventually responds to necessity.

Climatic progress is less fickle. Once started, it keeps going. Melting glaciers don't refreeze. Thawing tundra doesn't reharden. All that released methane rises inexorably from the Arctic into the stratosphere where it traps ever more of the sun's heat, many times more effectively than mere CO2. Unfortunately we can't will it to stop, or threaten it, or even bribe it. Al Gore was right, darn it.

Nor are we likely to stem for long the legitimate desires or economic progress of hundreds of millions of upwardly mobile Asians. They know how to work and how to save. Motorbikes are replacing their pedal bikes, motor scooters are replacing the motorbikes, and tiny cars are replacing the scooters. In India, Tata Motors has rolled out a four-door prototype which it proposes to sell for $2,500. Do you think we can derail that? India feels it deserves its own Henry Ford, even if it destroys the atmosphere in the process. It's their turn.

And how could anyone stop them?

Climate change is not yet perceived to be an issue in the Third World. Droughts, floods, heat waves, and habitat shifts don't come with labels. They just seem to be typical disasters of nature. For one thing scientists are not yet ready to publicly assign long-term causes to such local events. If researchers won't even blame Katrina on warming, how do we persuade the world's Joe Sixpacks to change their personal

ways? And in our benighted Northeast, land of self-appointed opinion leaders, there is scant evidence of any change at all.

A little more rain maybe, but nothing to get excited about.

Anyway, SUVs are safer for our families, as long as they don't flip over. Thank goodness we can afford to buy gas for them again.

Besides, when warming really cranks up it won't be Americans who get stung the worst. OK, in our drought areas we'll have to say bye-bye to lawns and to car washes.

And in the wet areas it may be curtains for our basements. Nonetheless it will all happen so slowly that we'll learn to adjust. It may one day seem odd to old timers to be buying maple syrup from Labrador, wheat from Hudson Bay, and strawberries from Montana, but so what? At least by that time the polar bears and walruses will all have starved or drowned and we won't have to listen to environmental propaganda any more.

Naturally a few folks will really take it on the chin, but don't worry, it won't be us.

Bangladesh is due to become the next Atlantis and the Sahara will cover most of Africa. The desert will also finally bury Beijing, and the Gulf of Mexico will inch its way up to St. Louis. Other than that you'll hardly notice a thing.

Well, maybe a cut in parka sales.

But even these modest afflictions do have some timid people worried. They hate change. You might not be surprised that eight Northeast states are already dabbling in carbon cap-and-trade legislation. Not much effect so far but that may have more to do with the recession than anything. At least Wall Street speculators are thrilled at the prospect of something else to trade, having watched the killing their European brethren have made on a similar system over there.

The real answer is, unfortunately, a tax. How about another dollar a gallon?

THAT would cut consumption. But not yet.

Not until WE start to suffer. For now let's just give $25 to Greenpeace and be done with it.

BY JIM HIGHTOWER Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano is moving to Washington to become head of the Homeland Security Department in the Obama administration, and I sure hope she's bringing a load of two things this humongous agency totally lacks: common sense and common decency.

Homeland Security is in charge of building the ridiculous and absurdly expensive 40-foot-high wall that our government is erecting along the U.S. border with Mexico. The very idea of this divisive wall is offensive to the people who live in U.S. border towns, but the insufferable arrogance of the agency has made the wall's offensiveness explosive.

The Department's charm was on glaring display just before Christmas, when it sued the Nature Conservancy to condemn land near Brownsville, Tex., for the project.

The conservancy owns and runs a unique 1,000-acre preserve along the Rio Grande, and the federal wall builders wanted to take a 60-foot-wide strip from the preserve - amounting to about eight acres.

Why fuss over eight acres? Well,

you'd assume that the wall would be going up on the actual border, but no. They want to build this section a mile-and-a-half from the border, thus putting thee-fourths of the preserve in a no-man's land between the wall and Mexico. The most critical part of the wildlife habitat, and even the home of the preserve's manager, would be cut off by the wall, effectively destroying the park, which is home to two kinds of endangered wildcats and a rare palm forest.

A decade ago, the conservancy paid $2.6 million to buy this gem, yet Homeland Security now insists that it should pay only $114,000 as "fair compensation" for the 60-foot stretch it intends to take from the center of the preserve. It's this kind of swaggering lunacy that has made the agency so beloved. Good luck to Janet Napolitano.

BY LYNN CARROLL Two of Aventura's most prestigious martial arts academies are merging their Aventura locations in order to provide members with more options and greater flexibility.

World Champion J.P. Perelmutter's Team Martial Arts Centers has moved in to the Moti Horenstein's Mixed Martial Arts Academy, located at 18425 NE 19th Ave., right behind the BP gas station just off Miami Gardens Drive.

The 7,000-square-foot fully equipped, state-of-the-art facility has four floors available for training, says Sensei Jarett Perelmutter of Team Martial Arts. "We feel that by bringing the strengths of both teams together we will enhance each other," he says, "because all of our instructors and our students will be brought together under one roof."

"We offer a blend of many different forms of marital arts - Israeli krav maga, Muay Thai, kickboxing, kyokushin karate, jujitsu, judo, kung fu and weapons arts," Horenstein said.

Q: My fiance is the man of my dreams ... finally! We are both in our late 30s and financially secure, and we have a happy, stable home with two wonderful daughters - mine from a previous marriage.

We both waited seven years before getting engaged again, mostly because our exes hurt us badly. But now we are both thrilled to be starting over, and we are deeply in love. Our only problem is in bed. When we make love, the mountains quake and time stops. But I am always the one in initiate contact. He seems to be satisfied with cuddling and kisses, but it stops there for him. I get tired of hoping he will finally take command. I don’t like to pressure him to do something he just isn’t interested in, so we are only making love once a week or so.

It is torture for me to lie beside him at night and not touch him. But I don’t want bedtime to become a nightmare for

him. I’ve been there. Yet I want him so badly it hurts. Love and desire are inseparable to me. I never slept around because of this. And he says he feels the same, where his heart dwells so does his libido. I don’t want it every night maybe just two or three times a week. Is that abnormal? We are both healthy, although he drinks several alcoholic drinks in the evening and smokes. I do neither. And I have never denied him anything sexually, although he has some tastes that others might find unusual.

But even these don’t interest him anymore. I’ll do anything to make things right between us.

A: I know that it is the male who is “supposed” to have the stronger libido, but that is not always the case. There are plenty of couples in which it is the woman who wants sex more often. As long as the two of you enjoy sex when you have it, there is nothing “wrong” with you being the initiator. You don’t have to tell anybody, so there’s no reason to be ashamed. The only fly in the ointment that I might see regards his sexual tastes. You don’t specify what they are, but I suppose there is a small chance that he is gay but doesn’t want to admit it. If that were the case, he wouldn’t really be turned on by you, but he might be able to enjoy sex with you by having gay fantasies during sex. But I am not saying this is the case.

AVOIDING A BROKEN HEART

BY DAVID KORN, MD AND ROBERT RASKEN, MD In recognition of February being Heart Month, Doctors David Korn and Robert Rasken of Aventura Heart Center have prepared the following information to help educate Aventura News readers and help them prevent a broken heart.

Numbers you should know to watch when it comes to your heart and heart disease include: Total cholesterol should be under 200 and the bad cholesterol (LDL) should be under 100. The good cholesterol, known as HDL should be above 50 for women and above 40 for men.

What doctors used to consider as normal levels of bad cholesterol or LDL, may now be too high. This would leave many people vulnerable to heart attack and strokes. A recent study, called the Jupiter study was just completed. In this study, there were 18,000 patients studied and it showed that giving a cholesterol medication like a statin to these people with normal LDL cut their risk of heart attack and stroke in half. Therefore, the levels used that used to be normal may need to be lowered and more people should be receiving a statin.

The Jupiter study suggested that millions of people should be getting statins. Current guidelines recommend that doctors prescribe a statin for anyone whose LDL level is 100 or higher.

Doctors may treat patients with lower LDL at their own discretion. Dr. Greg Fonorow, whose study was published in the American Heart Journal, noted that half of all heart attacks occurred at LDL below 100. This study supports the push to drive LDL even

lower, down to 70. This study offered an important clue to another potential risk factor and that is inflammation.

The findings of this study offer strong evidence that statins relieve inflammation. LDL carries cholesterol into the bloodstream where it collects in artery walls. Inflammatory cells can attack these deposits and cause them to burst. When that happens, blood clots and other debris can block the blood vessel and cut off the heart's blood supply leading to a heart attack. The two fundamental components are cholesterol and inflammation. CRP is a signal of artery inflammation and can be measured in the bloodstream. This may become an important risk factor of heart disease. Currently, the accepted view of heart risk comes from the Framingham study,

which was a long term government funded evaluation of the residents of the Massachusetts community dating back to 1948.

The Framingham study identified certain risk factors. The risk factors include age, gender, smoking, blood pressure, diabetes, blood cholesterol and family history as key risk factors that can be used to calculate a person's risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next ten years.

In this study, it appears that testing for inflammation simplified the picture and became more important than some of the traditional risk factors as a predictor of heart attack risk.

The other numbers to watch in terms of heart attack risk include triglycerides which should be 150 or less and fasting blood sugar which should be under 100. Blood pressure should be no higher than 120 over 80. Your BMI or body mass index (your weight to height ratio) should not be higher than 25. If your body mass index tops that figure, your heart attack risk increases 32 percent. Over 29, it rises to 81 percent. Waist circumference should be 35 inches or less for women and no more than 40 inches for men.

City of Aventura launches 2009 Go Green initiative program How "Green" can your condo or business go?

The City of Aventura announces a call for submissions to the 2009 Go Green Initiative Recognition Program. Winners will be recognized at the Arbor Day ceremony which will be held on Friday, April 24th. This award was created to recognize the efforts of residents and businesses who are taking the initiative to preserve the environment.

The application form is available at cityofaventura.com or by calling the Community Services Department at 305-466-8930. The deadline for all Go Green applications is Friday, February 27th.

Categories include recycling, energy savings and alternatives,

water conservation measures, fuel conservation/alternatives and others listed on the application.

The program is a project of the Aventura Community Services Advisory Board, who will be presenting the awards. Coping with loss

BY PATRICIA C. FRANK Because there are so many losses in life it would be natural to assume that you are prepared to cope with them when they occur.

However, the opposite is true. Coping skills are not taught at home or at school. Grief is an experience and a part of life that is often ignored.

Aside from being a Therapist and Coach, I am also a Bereavement Counselor.

I want you to know some of the signs and symptoms of grief. I want you to know what is normal and I want to help you cope.

Grief is an emotional reaction to loss and separation from a very important and signification relationship. It is a feeling. It is a normal and unfortunately, unavoidable feeling and experience. Within your major loss there are often many other losses.

Losing your job or your spouse may mean losing your security and your home. You may have to move. This may mean losing your comfort level and your support system of family and friends. You may even lose your health. These secondary losses can compound and complicate your recovery.

The greater your loss the greater your grief.

At first, when you suffer a loss, you

may be in shock and feel numb. Then reality sets in with feelings of sadness. You may become depressed, cry and feel isolated and alone. You may also begin to experience physical, cognitive, behavioral, emotional and psychological symptoms. You feel vulnerable and powerless. Emotionally and psychologically you may feel anger, panic, guilt, anxiety and desperation. Your sleeping, eating and sexual patterns may be affected and change. Alcohol and drug consumption may increase. Restlessness, absentmindedness, memory loss, exhaustion and the inability to concentrate are also common reactions. People may fear that they are losing their minds. They fear that they will never be able to cope again.

Your ego and self-esteem are diminished. Your identity is challenged.

You may also experience many physical symptoms such as; palpitations, tightness in your chest, difficulty breathing, elevated blood pressure, tremors, dizziness, nausea, and intestinal distress.

Knowing that all of these reactions, plus others are normal will help. Knowing that you are not alone will help. Knowing how to cope with them will definitely help.

Be heart healthy

BY DR. KEVIN COY February is Heart Disease Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to make sure you are following a heart-healthy lifestyle. Despite all the treatment advances and information available to people about prevention, heart disease is still the leading cause of death in the United States. The good news is that the power to prevent or reduce your risk of heart disease is in your hands, and requires nothing more than a commitment to making smart lifestyle choices. The following five tips can help you get started: Stop Smoking Smoking is the leading risk factor for heart attack. Tobacco smoke contains thousands of chemicals that damage your blood vessels and heart, which cause your arteries to narrow and may eventually lead to a heart attack. The benefits from quitting smoking are immediate — your risk factors drop significantly in just one year.

Start Moving Exercising just 30 minutes a day, several days a week, is great for your heart.

When you are physically active, the blood flow to your heart increases and your heart can pump more blood throughout your body with less effort. Exercising also has a positive impact on high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Your exercise routine can be as simple as walking briskly, gardening, or even dancing.

Expensive gyms or exercise equipment are not required. The important thing is to do some form of physical activity on a consistent basis and for at least 30 minutes. It’s always a good idea to check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program.

Eat Well Eating a diet full of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and low-fat dairy products is important for keeping your heart healthy.

One of the benefits of living in South Florida is the local supply of fruits and vegetables – right now, strawberries and tomatoes are at their best and make wonderful heart healthy food options. Make a commitment in 2009 to limit how much saturated fat you eat, including fried foods, desserts, packaged snack foods and chips.

These types of unhealthy foods can increase your cholesterol level and your chances of coronary artery disease. By adding more fruits and vegetables and

other smart food choices, you are not only decreasing your risk for heart disease but helping to prevent cancer and other diseases as well.

Keep a Healthy Weight It is important to stay at a healthy weight as an adult. Any extra weight you gain later in life becomes stored as fatty tissue and this surplus of fat can lead to heart disease, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure, as well as diabetes. If you started a new exercise routine earlier this year, make sure you combine it with a healthy diet to keep the weight off! Be realistic about how much weight you need to lose and how quickly you can lose it.

Long-term weight loss does not happen overnight, so don’t fall for products that promise this. Eating a well-balanced diet and doing regular physical activity are the surest ways to lose weight and keep it off over time.

How to be ‘heart smart’

Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are our nation’s No. 1 killer. To urge Americans to join the battle against these diseases, since 1963 Congress has required the president to proclaim February “American Heart Month.”

The American Heart Association works with the administration to draft and sign this annual proclamation with the goal to raise funds for research and education and pass along information about heart disease and stroke.

Many people aren’t aware that heart disease is also the leading cause of death among women. It’s the third leading cause of death among women ages 25 to 44 years and the second among

women ages 45 to 64. So, this month, learn how to be more “heart smart” with these heart-healthy tips: Heart Smart Diet Learn which foods are heart smart and try to include them as a regular part of your diet. No matter which eating plan you follow, these guidelines are

Are we forever changed

BY AUSTIN FRYE, JD, MBA, CFP® Finally, 2008, an historically dismal year for economies across the globe is behind us. While the depth of despair and desperation has not reached that of the Great Depression, the financial catastrophe of 2008-2010 will surely be cited in history books and studied for generations.

Survivors of the Great Depression developed what became known as the “depression mentality.” Fearing that the economy could crash again at any time, they were very reluctant to take out loans or assume any economic risk. They were extremely cautious in spending, paying cash for all purchases, large and small.

We are now seeing signs of a similar aversion to risk taking and of extreme caution seeping into the current mentality.

Reduced spending and borrowing will translate to slower or no growth for our economy over the short-term. This can lead to a deflationary cycle, in which consumers will tend to hoard cash and delay purchases, hoping for even lower prices down the road. This will likely lead to lower profits for businesses and more layoffs for workers. Thus, the

cycle will continue to feed on itself until there is economic stimulation of some sort and the perception is created that the cycle is ending.

I believe that some version of the new stimulus package is what is needed in our current deflationary cycle. The effectiveness of the stimulus program is contingent on the Trillions of dollars being created to fund the programs, being spent wisely and carefully.

The good news is that this cycle will change—it always does. Slowly consumer confidence will begin to re-build and we will begin to see things turn around. As happened with the generations that came of age after the Great Depression, these newer capitalists may be less risk averse than those who have felt the burn of the current crisis directly.

They will buy the bonds with higher yields and the goods at lower prices and reap handsome rewards for the risks they take. Of course some of us, not as deeply traumatized as others, will do the same, and before you know it things will begin to turn-up again.

For now, avoid stressing out, as much as possible. What we are experiencing is all apart of the normal cycle of events, economic or otherwise, always occurring and always repeating itself, as we go through this predictably unpredictable journey called life.

Train don’t chain your best friend Beginning April 2009, it will be illegal to keep your dog tethered when you aren’t present.

This means it will be unlawful to tie a dog to any object or structure -- including a house, tree, fence, post, garage or shed -- by any means, such as chain, rope, cord, leash or running line.

However, this doesn’t mean you can’t use a leash to walk a dog.

That fact is that dogs left tethered and unattended are deprived of social interaction, and since they can’t run if they feel threatened, they are 2.8 times more likely to bite. So the anti-tethering law has been enacted to improve the safety of residents as well as the well-being of pets.

Once the law is in effect, illegally tethering your dog can result in fines of $100 or more.

BY BOB DIAMOND Lincoln, Douglas And The Declaration of Independence In Lincoln’s famous 1858 Senatorial debate with Sen. Stephen Douglas, the argument centered on the intent of the Founding Fathers. Douglas stated; “I hold that this government was made by white men, for the benefit of white men and their posterity forever…the signers of the Declaration of Independence had no reference whatever to the Negro, when they declared (in the preamble) that all men are created equal.” Lincoln disagreed and argued that the Negro is entitled to the all that Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration holds out, namely, “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Jefferson’s fifty-five word preamble has grown in meaning to become the seminal statement for a mandate for individual rights “that eventually ended slavery, made women’s suffrage inevitable and sanctioned civil rights for all minorities.”

Who was right- Douglas or Lincoln? What was Jefferson’s intention in his preamble?

According to Jeffersonian scholar, Joseph J. Ellis (American Creation), no one

paid attention to the Declaration’s preamble and none of the Founding Fathers envisioned the later interpretation. “And there is no evidence that Jefferson himself had any inkling that he had written the seminal statement of the American promise.” On June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia moved a resolution “that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States.” Congress appointed a committee of five to draft a document to implement Lee’s resolution, so that Congress could announce the decision to the world. That responsibility passed to young Jefferson. Independence was a foregone conclusion. After a few minor revisions, Jefferson’s draft was submitted to Congress on June 28th. The Congressional committee spent two days making changes in Jefferson’s draft and revised or deleted about 20% of the text. The purpose of the document was to be an indictment against the British king, with a list of grievances to justify independence. The delegates regarded the preamble as “a mere rhetorical flourish designed to introduce the more serious business.” Eighty- two years later, Lincoln found the “magic words of American History, buried (very deep) in the text of Jefferson’s preamble.”

LET’S TALK CARS The Subaru Forester is one tough little sport utility vehicle (SUV) and it continues to gain in popularity with American consumers and gather industry accolades.

Most recently, the Forester topped 12 other vehicles to earn the Motor Trend magazine award for “Sport Utility of the Year.” Editor-in-chief Angus MacKenzie said the judges’ decision was unanimous, a pretty strong recommendation by any standard of measure, and added: “The Subaru Forester is the SUV for our times.”

The Forester has been redesigned for 2009 and given a new chassis with a better safety structure. It’s longer (3.6 inches) and wider (2 inches), with more rear seat legroom and cargo space, and about 100 pounds heavier. Forester is exceptionally stable and rugged off

road, and has a proven all-wheel drive system and a new rear suspension. It comes with either a 170 hp 2.5-liter boxer engine or a 224 hp turbocharged powerplant. It stacks up very well against the Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4.

Despite the increase in size and power, Forester gets better fuel economy figures (20/26 mpg) than last year’s model. The turbocharged Forester XT gets 19/24 mpg, but needs premium fuel. The 16.9-gallon fuel tank has a highway range of 400 miles.

As for styling, there’s a functional hood scoop, amber turn signals in the headlights, flared wheelwells and fivespoke 17-inch alloy wheels. A camouflaged black C-pillar enhances the look from the side. From the rear, the XT has a twin chrome-tipped exhaust and a spoiler over the rear window.

The Subaru Forester received the highest possible ratings in frontal and side impact crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In addition to a five-star frontal and side impact crash-test rating, the 2009 Forester received a four-star

With a starting price of $19,995, the Forester is $1,200 less than the price of a 2008 model. Thus, it’s no surprise that Subaru is set to be the only major automaker to report higher sales for 2008. The company reported that sales for 2008 rose by 0.3 percent to 187,699 vehicles, up from 187,208 in 2007, and

the hot-selling Forester was a big reason for the increase. Forester sales surged by 36.4 percent in 2008.
