Kick-off MS Awareness Week by participating in the MS Walk Multiple Sclerosis is personal to Sunny Isles Beach resident Estrella Behar, her younger sister, Dina, has MS. That’s why Behar has chaired the MS Walk since 1996. "It is important that my family and I support the National MS Society by kicking off MS Awareness Week at the Aventura Walk." Her team, Dina's Heroes, is made up of approximately 30 friends and family members. Ironically, earlier this year, Estrella's youngest daughter also named Dina began to display MS like symptoms but has not been officially diagnosed with MS. "We work with the National MS Society because it is only through ongoing MS research that we will combat this disease that affects my sister. My greatest hope is for a cure and that no mother will yet again have to face an MS diagnosis for their child," explains Estrella. This year Estrella will not only participate in the Aventura MS Walk at Founders Park South on March 1st, but will also walk in the Coral Gables MS Walk at the Park at City Hall on March 22nd. To learn how you can participate in the 2009 MS Walk, please call 1-800-FIGHT-MS or visit mswalksouthflorida.org

Corporations require their executives to get detailed annual physicals because they have a vested interest in maintaining the productivity of their most valued employees. Then why shouldn't everyone get the same exam? Executive-style annual exams are really the kinds of physicals that primary care physicians should be performing on all of their patients, but most just don't have the time," says Charles Shenker, M.D., an Aventura-based MDVIP affiliated physician. Since MDVIP physicians limit their practices to less than 600 patients, they have the time to perform a comprehensive physical examination that is typically not given in a traditional primary care practice. According to Dr. Shenker, "I have encoun- Charles Shenker, MD of Staff, Aventura Hospital tered many incidents where the examination pre- Chief Certified, American Board of Internal Medicine vented potential serious illness, and even, saved Certified, American Board of Pulmonary Medicine their lives." Patients in a traditional primary care practice are probably not getting much beyond a blood test, EKG, a look into their throat, ears and mouth during their annual physical. Although these basic tests are good, they are not comprehensive. They may not provide a risk factor assessment that analyzes family history, patient history and lifestyle and nutrition analysis, a comprehensive battery of blood tests as well as urinalysis and EKG. The MDVIP physician also includes screenings that you wouldn't expect such as: Psychological Screening (depression index); Epworth Sleepiness Index (helps diagnose sleep disorders); Pulmonary Function Testing; Audiogram (determines hearing loss and severity level); and Vaccination history. Once an MDVIP patient receives the exam results the doctor and patient work together as partners to determine a personalized wellness plan and a treatment program. All the test results, history, and prescriptions are put on a mini wallet-sized CD that a patient can carry with them. Dr. Shenker says, "A total comprehensive exam is critical, not only for diagnosing disease but for preventing it-for everyone." OneBiz Center takes the hassle out of leasing office space BY LYNN CARROLL Whether you have a new business or one that is new to the area, renting office space can be a real headache - and a major expense. OneBiz Center Executive Offices is an easy, cost-effective solution, with a built-in bonus - ownership that wants to help you grow your business. "We like to think that we can help people grow their businesses by taking off their hands the hassle of managing an office, paying office related bills, hiring support people, overseeing the network, and so on," says OneBiz Center co-owner and partner Joel Bary, "so they can focus on their own business, which is what we all like and need to do." OneBiz Center Executive Office Space's flexible plans, starting at $1,000 a month, deliver all the advantages of class-A office-space - from Internet and phone systems, receptionist, and cleaning services to access to the onsite gym and covered parking. OneBiz Center

tenants have access to two conference rooms, plus a kitchen with self-serve coffee, water and a vending machine. A package like that would cost a tenant in a traditional office tower, conservatively, $3,000 a month; at OneBiz Center, it could be a third of that. There's no long-term obligation, at OneBiz Center you can rent for as long or as short a period as you need, starting with three months. Choose from three different service plans - Standard, Premium or Platinum - or customize your own. "Just bring your laptop, and that's it - we provide the rest," Bary says. "We have a choice of three layouts. It makes a lot of sense, particularly for those in service industries who have some clients in the north end of the county or small- to mid-size companies looking to boost their image with top-of-the-line private offices and executive services." OneBiz Center is located at 20900 NE 30th Ave,, Suite 200. For information: 305-749-0900 or onebizcenter.com

VIEWPOINT Poor parents need special How about we do without support the waste? BY MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN Parenting offers the most wonderful and daunting challenges in the world. Parents are their children's most important teachers and mentors, and they bear primary responsibility for nurturing their sons and daughters while keeping them safe. Yet parenting is one of the most undervalued and least prepared-for roles in America. Virtually everyone who has children wants to be a good parent, but some do not know how to do that, and many lack the support of extended family or community resources. So instead of judging or assigning blame when parents come up short in providing care and protection to their children, we should recognize that what many parents need is help. Nobody raises a child alone and many parents need support from a spouse, parent, sibling, friend or neighbor. That support may come in the form of respite for an hour or two of alone time once a week or the ability to attend church while a friend sits with their children. Parents, grandparents or other caregivers of children or teenagers can benefit from support groups organized by faith-based or other community organizations where they can find help for coping with the challenging behaviors of their children or extra support to address their children's special needs. Many parents are plagued by poverty or unemployment that can make it particularly difficult for them to balance parenting with job searches or work. Parents who worry about the impact on their children of an impending job lay-off or eviction may at some point vent their frustration on a child. Stress grows as parents become more isolated. Help for many families comes through home visiting programs that engage parents and keep them from being isolated. Home visitors work with parents to understand and address their children's developmental needs while strengthening their parenting skills. Some home visiting programs offer a variety of supports to families with differing needs, but most seek to help parents beginning right after childbirth when they are especially receptive to advice and assistance. The Nurse-Family Partnership®, a successful home visiting program, has the longest track record. It engages young women during pregnancy, focusing on improving the health, well-being and selfsufficiency of low-income, first-time par-

BY RYAN ALEXANDER ents -- many of them young single mothers -- and stays with them through the child's second birthday. The nurses work with mothers on health-related behaviors during pregnancy such as cigarette smoking, drinking and drug abuse, and educate them about the physical and emotional needs of their children. The Healthy Families home visiting programs target mothers at risk, connecting with them at the hospital and following up with visits, to some parents and children through age five. The Parents as Teachers program offers home visiting to parents with newborns through the schools. Recognizing that parents are their children's best first teachers, families receive child development instruction and parenting support in their homes from a trained parent educator for the child's first three years, and in some locations, until the child enters kindergarten. All of these home visiting models have been highly effective in strengthening parenting skills, promoting healthy child development, and addressing child abuse and neglect. For parents facing special challenges, such as substance abuse, comprehensive family-based treatment brings parents and their young children together so that attention can be given to the parent-child relationship as well as the child's development. These programs also help parents prepare a recovery plan as they transition back into their communities. As a component of some programs, mothers in recovery serve as wise parent mentors to counsel others parents going through treatment. Support for families in need through community-based organizations, schools or public agencies must fully engage parents, other family members and the children and build on the strengths of all of them. Helping adults become better parents reduces child abuse and neglect and works to prevent crime and delinquency when children's special needs are caught early. Ultimately, this type of intervention benefits children and all of us over the long term by helping to make the futures of those served more productive and by lowering public expenditures. Marian Wright Edelman, whose latest book is “The Sea Is So Wide And My Boat Is So Small: Charting a Course for the Next Generation,” is president of the Children's Defense Fund. www.childrensdefense.org

In his inaugural address, President Barack Obama made clear his vision for government. Midway through his speech, he said that it is “not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works.” The president also made clear that if a program is failing or not working, it should end. Over the last two decades, generally coinciding with the start of each new Congress, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has written a report that should help the new administration strive to meet this laudable goal. The most recent study chronicles about 30 government programs that are at high risk for waste, fraud, or abuse. The GAO report on high risk government programs can serve as a road map for the Obama administration. The objective of rooting out waste, fraud, abuse, and inefficiencies in government, as well as identifying at-risk agencies and programs, will require hard work. Here are some examples from the high-risk list that are a good place to start: Defense Weapons Purchases: This decade, the military has significantly increased the number of major defense acquisition programs. On average, the cost overruns of the 95 weapons currently under development or in production have increased by $295 billion over initial estimates. And most of these programs are experiencing a 21month delay in delivering the weapons systems. The Department of Defense must then request more funding to cover the overruns, making less money available for other priorities. Enforcement of Tax Laws: The amount of taxes that taxpayers should have paid but didn't was last estimated to be $345 billion. That is with about an 84 percent compliance rate-a rate that has changed little in three decades. After late payments and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) enforcement actions are accounted for, the so called tax gap narrows to $290 billion. And recently IRS began

contracting out some of its collections to private companies, which, according to Treasury's taxpayer advocate, has actually cost taxpayers money. Another concern is U.S companies using off-shore tax havens. GAO's recent work showed that many U.S. multinational corporations are shifting profits to low or no-tax jurisdictions. The lost tax revenue is about $56.4 billion. IRS enforcement of the tax laws is vital. It is a key way to enhance taxpayer confidence that everyone is paying their fair share. Reforming Department of Energy contracting: The Department of Energy relies more on private contractors than any other government agency. Nearly 90 percent of the agency's annual budget is spent on contracts. Twelve large Energy Department construction projects exceeded original cost estimates, with increases ranging from $79 million to $7.9 billion, and experienced sizable time delays. When President Obama said that “us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account, to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day, because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government,” he was essentially saying that cutting wasteful programs is necessary for the public to regain faith in its elected officials. Sure, there are many government programs that work and there are some that fail. The GAO High Risk report recommendations are a good place to begin reining in waste and cutting fat. When government is planning on spending enormous amount of federal cash on a stimulus, it is even more critical that the wasteful programs are eliminated, and the inefficient ones reformed. This would be an important first step in regaining public trust. Banyan Life Financial CEO Jon Kidd brings new strategies to wealth transfer BY LYNN CARROLL

PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE

LC: In what segment of the financial services market does Banyan Life Financial focus? JK: Banyan magnifies the wealth of families nationwide by supplementing their estate plan with financed life insurance. We were recognized by Goldline Research as one of the "Ten Most Dependable™ Wealth Managers of Florida," a list that was published in Forbes 400 Magazine "The Richest People of America" 25th Anniversary special edition. This was a distinct honor for us as a young and rapidly growing company in a maturing industry. LC: How does life insurance premium financing work? JK: The client's trust borrows to pay the life insurance policy's premiums, thus retaining the family's liquidity for continued investment. Basically, the insured clients are merely leveraging a hidden asset - their "insurable capacity". The policy, as an asset, has more value than the loan. Banyan Life Financial believes in the long-term value and benefits of life insurance for wealth transfer and mitigating inheritance tax exposure for clients and their beneficiaries. We bring to the market fully-disclosed premium loans that are recognized by insurance carriers and regulatory authorities.

planning tool often used to pay the inheritance tax. Many clients consider augmenting their estate and charitable planning by "donating their insurability" to their favorite charity and in many cases, realize a tax deduction. LC: What's your background in wealth management?

JK: I've co-founded several financial services companies that are focused on the elder estate-planning market. I'm proud to say that these companies have helped raise $7 million for charities nationwide and have helped protect over $500 million in assets. LC: You're very active both in your industry and in the community. What are some of the organizations to which you give your time?

LC: Who is the ideal client for this type of financing?

JK: Professionally, I belong to the International Forum, Life Insurance Finance Association, and I was recently appointed as a board member of Seniors First. I am on the Founders' and Foundation Boards of Mount Sinai in Miami Beach, and serve on the Foundation's Planned Giving Committee. Other organizations I am involved with include the Aventura Marketing Council, Children First Committee of University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine's Pediatrics Department, Planned Giving Council of Miami, Surf Club and Casa Casuarina.

JK: Our ideal clients are age 70 and over, with a minimum net worth of $1 million. Life insurance is a great estate

Comfort Keepers balances home care and budgets BY LYNN CARROLL Need to trim the budget while maintaining care levels? With Comfort Keepers, it's possible, says Certified Senior Advisor Steve Phillip. In the current economic climate, he says it makes sense to reconsider the costs of homecare, particularly for those living on fixed incomes. Yet the ability to pay for important services has to be weighed against concerns over health and safety. "A proven solution," says Phillip, "is to limit the number of hours you retain homecare services, using medical devices at other times. A SafetyChoice™ device, available only through Comfort Keepers, works well in a home if you follow certain precautions." Comfort Keepers focuses on care tailored to needs, says Phillip, who oversees the worldwide chain's Hollywood office. "We do have a three-hour minimum per visit," he says, "but visits can be as seldom as once a week.

Whatever plan we use, we don't compromise on quality of care. We do a safety assessment of a home to suggest what's needed --- maybe a bedside commode or handrails." If your loved one does need 24-hour care, Phillip says, Comfort Keepers will try to work out a payment plan that meets your budget. Comfort Keepers, he says, boasts a trio of reasons for being the most caring choice. "The way we look at it, the major elements in the homecare field are safety, reliability and customer service." Whether it's companionship, errands and trips to appointments, or assistance with household chores and personal care, remember that Comfort Keepers has a six year local track record and worldwide has more than 550 franchises in Canada, the UK, Ireland, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. That translates into reliability and dependability. For information, call 954-920-0055 or visit comfortkeepers.com

County Line Chiropractic honors Gold Medal winner BY LYNN CARROLL County Line Chiropractic Centers and the Southeastern U.S. chapter of the Jamaican Diaspora Foundation recently sponsored functions to honor Michael Frater for winning a gold medal at the Beijing Olympic Games. Gold medal winners Asafa Powell and Nester Carter, along with silver medal winners Sherone Simpson and Trinidad's Darryl Brown, joined the celebrations as members of the MVP Track & Field Club for training Jamaican athletes. Eight members of the club won five gold, four silver and one bronze medal in Beijing. "We're proud of Michael Frater's outstanding accomplishments at the Olympics and in track and field in general," said Dr. Robert Hochstein, County Line Chiropractic Center's CEO. "We wanted to honor him as our hometown hero as part of the continued commitment at County Line Chiropractic to support the Caribbean community here in South Florida." To win his gold medal, Frater ran the second leg on Jamaica's world

record-breaking 4 X 100-meter relay team. A North Lauderdale resident, he was a 100-meter champion at the Pan Am games in 2005 and won a silver medal at the IAAF World Championships of Athletics. He ran the 100-meter in 9.97 seconds this year, his personal best. Frater and teammates were honored at a by-invitation-only event before attending a private party to celebrate Michael's birthday with his family and friends. The next afternoon, they toured the County Line Chiropractic Centers office in Miami Gardens and were publicly honored by city and county officials. County Line Chiropractic, Dr. Hochstein said, is dedicated to providing the highest quality comprehensive care to people with injuries, pain and disabilities. It operates five offices throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties and has been very supportive of many civic and cultural organizations, especially in South Florida's Caribbean community. Life in the City BY BARI AUERBACH ‘In the News’ Octuplets Born: Here in Aventura, stores like Bellini and Babies”R”Us would certainly appreciate a local baby boom…But since eight is way more than enough, it might be better to keep it down to twins or triplets so Publix doesn’t ever run out of baby food and there’s never a stroller traffic jam on the circle! Miracle on the Hudson: It was amazing when that plane landed on the Hudson River in New York – but it would be even more miraculous if cars backed up on Aventura’s flyover could sprout wings and land on Biscayne a little bit faster! Phelps & A-Rod Apologize: It’s ethical to own up to a mistake – so the next time an Aventura police officer pulls you over and accuses you of speeding or running a red light, “Just Admit It!” Maybe you won’t get a medal or a stadium named after you – but you might get off with only a warning instead of a ticket! Obama Signs Stimulus Bill: Mortgage relief and tax breaks are good – but at

Aventura Mall it would be great if “retail relief” could stimulate more shopping sprees. It would also be nice if neighborhood restaurants could stimulate appetites by lowering prices to offer bagel breaks, coffee breaks and lunch breaks! Snuggie Selling Out: The blanket with arms is all the rage – but in Aventura where it’s often quite humid, a better best seller might be the “Muggie” – a T-shirt with built-in ventilation ducts releasing intermittent blasts of cold air! Peanut Butter Recall: Luckily, Whole Foods Market in Aventura has plenty of almond and cashew butter to tide us all over until it’s safe to splurge on Reese’s again! Netflix Business Booming: Despite the struggling economy, movies-by-mail service Netflix recently reported a rise in profits…This could be due to Aventura residents spending more time cocooning. After all, if you’re lucky enough to live in a luxurious condo with a tropical swimming pool, marina, on-site spa, tennis courts, game room, library, concierge, state-ofthe-art security system and valet service – why would you ever want to venture far from home??

Williams Island Marina a success at Miami International Boat Show BY LYNN CARROLL It was smooth sailing for Williams Island Marina during its debut outing at the prestigious Miami International Boat Show. Many of the people who stopped by the Marina's booth expressed interest in Williams Island and its state-of-the-art dockage facilities, says owner Scott Huizenga. Manager Bill Draughon, who has been at Williams Island Marina for more than 25 years, and administrative assistant Maria Orozco were on hand during the show to welcome both new boaters and seasoned mariners. "Time and again," Huizenga says, "we hear what a hidden gem Williams Island and its Marina is - especially when we explain the amenities offered and the lifestyle enjoyed by members and residents." And if that weren't enough, Williams Island Marina took the opportunity to offer incentives that included free membership for nonresidents. "We wanted to attract customers who may also choose this wonderful oasis as a place of residence," he says. After purchasing the marina in 2004, Huizenga oversaw renovations from stem to

stern, and will soon be adding larger slips capable of handling bigger vessels near the Villa Flora area and also close to the channel to the north marina. "What I find unique about this marina," he says, "is that the layout is not typical. It's spread around the 80acre island, giving boat owners some added privacy as well as conveying much less of a commercial feeling than most marinas." At the same time, Williams Island Bill Draughon, manager, Williams Island Marina (Right) with client Matthew Hardy (Left) property owners assumed ownership of club facilities and began more renovations. "We're very happy to say that renovations at the Island Club have led to even higher quality dining, with great entertainment many nights," Huizenga says. "Updates to facilities in the spa, fitness center, locker rooms and indoor pool areas are complete. The tennis program is in full swing with a new pro, Carlos Triana." Clark Center's East Lobby, 111 NW 1st Street in Miami. The display, which will be up from March 2nd through March 30th, will feature photos and descriptions of some of Florida's most notable and influential women. A portion of photographer Scherley Busch's collection "Florida Women of Achievement" will be on display. Selected portraits include singer Gloria Estefan, historian and author Arva Parks McCabe, environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas, U.S. Representative Carrie Meek, University of Miami President Donna Shalala, Iberia Tiles Chair Rosa Sugrañes, philanthropist Adrienne Arsht, Florida Representative Elaine Bloom, Florida Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente,

Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink, journalist Ana Azcuy, and human rights advocate Leona Cooper. Additionally, the Jewish Museum of Florida is contributing with a display of eight of Florida's most notable women who were pioneers in politics, civil rights, and other fields: May Mann Jennings, Mary McLeod Bethune, Pauline Berman, Rosie Weiss, Mary Barr Munroe, Annie Coleman, Paulina Pedroso, and Annie Jumper Tommie. "Women have successfully contributed to Florida's development for decades, and yet many have remained unsung heroes," said Comm. Heyman. "This is a wonderful opportunity for residents to learn about and be proud of the women who exemplify the best of our community." For more information, call 305787-5999.

Keep Your Heart Healthy BY DAVID KORN, M.D. AND ROBERT RASKEN, M.D. It's time to take charge of your own heart health. Dr. David Korn and Dr. Robert Rasken of Aventura Heart Center have compiled the following information with tips of what you can and should do to keep your heart healthy. A lot of flashy expensive tests have been in the news lately, including computerized pictures that can give a detailed picture of your heart and its vessels, but most experts agree that the place to start is with a few simple tests, plus a family history. For most people, the basic tests will yield enough information to get an accurate sense of the odds of developing heart disease with the next decade. Your physician will ask you about your family history. If your father developed heart disease before age 55 or your mother before age 65, it approximately doubles your own risk. Siblings count too. If your brother or sister has been diagnosed with premature heart disease, you are twice as likely to develop it. Your doctor will take your blood pressure and your blood sugar too because diabetes roughly doubles the risk of heart disease. You will need periodic fasting blood tests to measure your levels of three blood fats. These include LDL (low density lipoprotein) also known as bad cholesterol, which builds up in the inner wall of blood vessels and may start to have artery narrowing plaque. HDL (high

Dr. Robert Rasken and Dr. David Korn of Aventura Heart Center

density lipoprotein) clears excess cholesterol from the arteries and brings it to the liver for disposal and triglycerides, which provide your body with energy, but may also help to thicken artery walls. Each measure is important, but so are certain combinations. Metabolic syndrome is a condition in which the body does not handle insulin properly and doubles the risk of a heart attack. The diagnosis of metabolic syndrome is based on the presence of three of the following

factors: Abdominal obesity, high triglycerides, low HDL, high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar. The ankle brachial index is another simple test that can suggest whether your arteries may be clogged. For this test, your doctor takes your blood pressure at your arm and your ankle. If the pressure at your ankle is appreciably lower, it suggests that arteries may be blocked. If any of these simple tests are suggestive, then your cardiologist needs to evaluate you. The cardiologist may, after obtaining a history and doing a physical, may want to do an electrocardiogram, followed by more definitive testing including an echocardiogram, which is a sound wave test of the heart, or by ordering a stress test with thallium which can evaluate for blocked arteries. The Aventura Heart Center has the capability to evaluate patients for heart disease and can suggesttreatment, lifestyle modification and medication, if necessary, to help you before you develop heart disease. Doctors Korn and Rasken are the Directors of Aventura Heart Center located at 2845 Aventura Blvd., Suite 249, in the Mount Sinai Aventura Building. Aventura Heart Center provides the most comprehensive prevention and general cardiovascular services in a unique healthcare center offering state-of-the-art nuclear cardiac and stress thallium testing to effectively diagnose heart disease, ultrasound diagnostics and bone density testing. Office hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To make an appointment, call 305-932-6061.

AZALEA GARDENS: AGE OF THE CENTURION

adults and the highest percentage of older adults.” The rate at which the senior population continues to grow, in general, but particularly in Florida is significant. This report further notes that “From 1990-2000, the 85+ population in Florida grew by 58%....However, during the same time period, the number of Floridians in the 45-64 age category, the famed ‘baby boomers’, increased by 42%, signaling the advent of a much larger senior population to come.” So how does one live to be a Centurion? A lot of what it takes to live a long, healthy life has to do, in large part, on common sense: if you live a healthy lifestyle, you will increase your chances of living to 100 years old, and beyond. In researching this question, both via the Internet and anecdotally (casual conversations with the elderly), the answer to this century-old question if you will, has essentially remained the same across time. Here are 10 ways to help you become a Centurion! • Remain physically active each day – make walking your best friend; • Engage in activities that challenge or engage your mind, like reading or crossword puzzles; • Keep socially active by staying connected to your family and friends, and attending social events or programs at least weekly; • Eat and drink moderately – obesity and alcoholism will negatively impact your life expectancy, and there are numerous studies to support this; • Do not smoke, and if you do, it is never too late to work on quitting. Even one day without smoking is a good day; • Limit the stress and negativity in your life. Stress reduction strategies, such as mediation or prayer can have amazing,

Today there is an ever-increasing population of seniors living up to and beyond 100 years of age. Since a century represents 100 years, the term “Centurion” aptly describes an individual who is a century year old (and counting…). The reality that more and more seniors are achieving this significant milestone has to do with a number of factors. As a society, we have become ‘data rich’ in the amount of information available to us, and in the ways that we are now able to access this data. The Internet has unquestionably provided the most efficient manner in which to share or to gain access to information related to any topic of interest; for example, health, fitness and advances in medicine. The number of seniors becoming Centurions will grow substantially over the next few decades, due in part to the advances in technology and medicine, but due also to the ‘baby boomer’ population arriving at this milestone. According to the Orange County Commission on Aging, in their publication titled, Recent Trends & Demographics – The Graying of America (December 2003), they provide some of the following data. “From 1900 to 2000, the number of older adults 85 and over increased 34 times.” Gender also continues to play a role in determining life expectancy, more favorable to woman, according to this same report. The report notes that “In the United States, a woman reaching the age of 65 today will live an average 19.2 additional years. A 65-year old man will have an average 16.3 additional years. Given these numbers, it is erroneous for anyone to believe that ‘life ends at 65’’’. The report continues to note that “In 2000, half of all older adults in the country lived in nine states, with Florida being the state with the second largest number of older

heart-felt results; • Be optimistic (and shed yourself of old resentments – be forgiving); • Treat others as you would want them to treat you; • Give generously and often; • If you happen to blessed with the genes of longevity, pace yourself because you may be around for a few more generations! At Azalea Gardens, providing residency for 35 seniors, we have three residents who have or will reach “The Age of the Centurion.” Lloyd will turn age 100 in one week; Gertrude turned age 101 last month; and Martha turned 103 this past December!! (Gertrude, by the way, was one of our first residents when we opened seven years ago)! Often at this age, many seniors not only benefit from the care at an assisted living facility, but enjoy the benefits as well. Our goal is to make life more manageable, simplified and support the highest level of independence and functioning of which the senior resident is capable. We do not want to do for others what they can do for themselves. A key benefit of residency at an assisted living program is the ongoing access and opportunities to socialize and participate in activities with other senior peers. We have a full-time Activities Coordinator to program various activities throughout each day. It isn’t just about entertaining them. Some of the activities are designed with specific attention to physical, mental, social, sensory and spiritual stimulation. What we do is give a life-enhancing structure to their lives where perhaps there was little. So how do YOU live to be a Centurion? At Azalea Gardens, we would like to invite suggestions and ideas from those in the community on how you have made it to 100 years old, or how you plan to live to be the “Age of the Centurion!” Second, we would welcome volunteer

Martha with son Neil

speaker(s) from the community to come to our monthly Family Council Meeting to speak on the topic of aging in general and/or on the issue of living to be a Centurion. Third, we would like to offer to the community to provide a guest speaker on a topic of interest to you by coming to your senior living community, association or senior center. Topics such as the following: 1) Medicare Part D prescription coverage and changes in 2009; 2) eligibility requirements for the long-term care diversion program, which is a program, in part, designed to assist with some of the cost of living at an assisted living facility; 3) Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease; or any topic that would be of interest to you. If you have ideas on living to be a Centurion (if sufficient responses are provided this would be the subject of next month’s article), wish to volunteer to be a guest speaker, or would like to request a guest speaker, please respond to the following email address keith@timelesslifecare.com or you can mail your ideas or request to the address below c/o Keith Anderson.
