Aventura Hospital educates on National Diabetes Alert Day The American Diabetes Alert is an annual, one-day call-to-action held on the fourth Tuesday of March for people to find out if they are at risk for diabetes. The American Diabetes Association estimates that there are 23.6 million children and adults in the United States, or 7.8% of the population, who have diabetes. Unfortunately, nearly one quarter of those affected are unaware that they have the disease. Aventura Hospital is proud to once again join the efforts of the American Diabetes Association by presenting diabetes Alert Day - a free education session Tuesday, March 24th that includes diabetes and vascular screenings and health education lectures. The Outpatient Diabetes Program invites the community to learn more about the risks and treatments associated with diabetes from featured specialists such as Misha Denham, D.O., Endocrinologist, presenting "Diabetes; Simplified and Demystified," Heather Katz, Certified Dietician and Clinical Nutrition Manager, presenting "Learning Food Labels for Healthy Living," and Gerard Myruski, Certified Personal Trainer, presenting "Stress and Exercise." Dr. Charlton Adler will offer complimentary foot screenings and educators will be readily available to answer any healthcare questions.
Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by your pancreas that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy required for daily living. If left untreated, high blood glucose levels can result in complications that affect your eyes, heart, kidneys and circulation. Good diabetes control can help reduce your risk of complications. Your risks, however, increase as you get older, gain too much weight, or if you do not stay active. Just as obtaining the best healthcare and treatment for your diabetes, it is equally important to become educated on how to best manage diabetes for you or your loved one. The Diabetes Program at Aventura Hospital is recognized by the American Diabetes Association, and can help you do both. This recognized program meets the National Standards for Excellence in diabetes education. The Diabetes Alert Day Fair will take place at Aventura Hospital's Medical Arts Building, 21110 Biscayne Boulevard, Suite 101, Aventura. For more information, call The Diabetes Program at 305-682-7266 or visit aventurahospital.com

VIEWPOINT We need farm policy reform now
For Wall Street, ‘greed’ is too weak
BY JOHN KINSMAN
BY JIM HIGHTOWER
As our government enacts a stimulus package and President Barack Obama announces bold initiatives to stem home mortgage foreclosures, disaster still threatens family farmers and their communities. The government's response to plummeting commodity prices and tightening credit markets leads to the basic question, who will produce our food? This is a worldwide crisis. U.S. policy and the demand for deregulation at all levels - from food production to financial markets - contribute greatly to the global collapse. The solution must be grounded in food sovereignty so that all farmers and their communities can regain control over their food supply. This response makes sense here in Wisconsin and was the global message from the 500-plus farmer leaders at the Via Campesina conference in Mozambique last October. Many U.S. farmers are going out of business because they receive prices equal to about one-half their costs to produce our food. How long could any enterprise receiving half the amount of its input costs stay in business? As an example, dairy farmers in the Northeast and Midwest must be paid between 30 and 35 cents per pound for their milk to pay production costs and provide basic living expenses. Until 1980, farmers received a price equal to 80 percent of parity, meaning that farmers' purchasing power kept up with the rest of the economy. Unfortunately, a 1981 political decision discontinued parity, and today the dairy farmers' share is below 40 percent. “Free trade” and other regressive agricultural policies have decimated farms. We are now a food-deficit nation dependent on food imports, often of questionable quality. Our food system is nearly broke, which is almost as serious as our country's financial meltdown. With fair farm policies, farmers would get fair prices that would not require higher consumer prices. The Canadian dairy pricing system is the best example that proves fair farmer prices can and often do bring lower consumer prices and a healthier rural economy. In addition, excessive middleman profits are taking advantage of both consumers and producers. As more farmers face bankruptcy, we all face a food emergency. European farmers speak from thousands of years' experi-
ence on the importance of family farms when they warn us: "Any time a country neglects its family farm base and allows it to become financially bankrupt, the entire economy of that country will soon collapse. It may take generations to rebuild the farm economy and that of the country." Despite the magnitude of this food emergency, “the farm crisis” does not appear in headlines, so politicians are not compelled to provide political or financial assistance to something that would likely fail to bring votes. As farmers, we are now only about 1 percent of the U.S. population, and have too little power to expose and prevent our demise. However, our urban and rural friends could be vital voices and advocates. Bailing out the financial giants will not solve the financial crisis in this country, but the right policies and stimulus dollars could prevent a severe food crisis by saving farmers and workers. Furthermore, farmer income dollars remain in and multiply at least two to four times in the local economy. Family farmers have proposed fair food and farm policies that can be implemented at a fraction of the present multibillion dollar policies that are destroying us. As the Treasury Department develops plans to distribute the bailout funds, the National Family Farm Coalition (NFFC) and others urge them to require banks receiving funds to treat their borrowers fairly by providing debt restructuring as an alternative to home or farm foreclosure or bankruptcy. Call the White House (202) 456-1111 and your members of Congress (202) 2243121 to urge them to support policies that: enable farmers to earn a fair market price; request an emergency milk price at $17.50; provide pricing stability through grain reserves and effective supply management; support the TRADE Act to be re-introduced in Congress; increase direct and guaranteed loans to family farmers - not to expand factory farms, contract poultry or mega dairy operations; ensure that the food we raise can be marketed to local schools and institutions providing a better food supply at a fair price. We need these immediate changes in our farm and food policy. John Kinsman is a Wisconsin organic dairy farmer, president of Family Farm Defenders (www.familyfarmdefenders.org) and executive committee member, National Family Farm Coalition (www.nffc.net)

America's titans of finance have caused the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression, and what is their reaction? Party time! "Break out the champagne/ We're feeling no pain/ Let the bonuses rain/ It's all to our gain!" Obtuse? Self-indulgent? Narcissistic? What's with these people? Let's review just three examples of their insanity: While Merrill Lynch was collapsing last year, requiring a $25 billion salvage job from us taxpayers, its CEO was merrily redecorating his office, picking out such necessities as $28,000 worth of curtains, a $35,000 antique commode, and a $1,400 wastebasket. Then he magnanimously doled out $4 billion in executive bonuses. Citigroup, which lost $28 billion in the past 15 months, has now been given a $345 billion bailout from Washington and is presently holding a fire sale of its corporate parts in a desperate effort to survive. But this didn't stop top executives from trying to buy a new, $50 million, Dassault Falcon corporate jet for themselves. Never mind
that the bank already had five executive jets. Despite losing billions of dollars last year, then going hat in hand to the government for multibillion-dollar bailouts, Wall Street investment bankers paid themselves $18 billion in bonuses at the end of the year. In a poll of these bankers, 46 percent felt they deserved bigger bonuses. We have to have some new words. "Greed" doesn't say it. "Outrageous" falls way short. "Shameful" has no effect on bankers. Help me out here: How shall we describe their abominable sense of selfentitlement? Channel your fury into creativity, and send me your ideas for new words that nail these bankers. Rabbi Lawrence Kelemen speaks at event in memory of George Berlin Rabbi Lawrence Kelemen from Jerusalem’s Neve Yerushalim College will be speaking on Thursday, March 19th, at 7:30 p.m. in Aventura at the Beit David Highland Lakes Shul. His talk is titled “The Torah’s secrets to raising mentches — loving, nurturing, parenting, and educating our children.” An accomplished lecturer and author, Rabbi Kelemen electrifies parents, teachers, and university students worldwide with his wit, humor, wisdom and gifts of torah knowledge. Rabbi Kelemen’s talks on matters of faith, relationships, self-development, and parenting / teaching are world famous. Educated at UCLA and Harvard University, Rabbi Kelemen brings to his lectures his impressive academic background, as well as a myriad of life experiences, including those of a newspaper editor, skiing instructor and radio anchorman. Raised in a non-orthodox Jewish environment, Rabbi Kelemen is able to bring an outsider’s perspective to the secrets our ancient texts hold for successful parenting. The program is open to the public; tickets available at the door in exchange for a tax-deductible donation of any amount made payable to ELI, Israel’s child abuse prevention, detection, and treatment agency. This event is sponsored by the George
J. Berlin (z”l) Memorial Chapter of ELI, on the occasion of his first yartzeit. Berlin was one of the founders of Aventura, beginning work here in 1969, when the entire area was a mosquito infested swamp. He grew up in Miami Beach, where his mother moved when he was only four years old, after his father died. The loss of his father at such a young age stayed with Berlin forever, and his concern for the welfare of others made it particularly appropriate that he be memorialized by helping children whose own parents cannot protect them from abuse and neglect. 100% of the donations made at the door will go directly to ELI to help Israel’s “Forgotten Childen”—the victims of abuse and neglect. Learn more about ELI at eliusa.org. The evening is expected to be standing room only, due to Rabbi Kelemen’s reputation. To reserve a guaranteed seat at no charge, go to rabbilk.com. Seats will held until 7:20 p.m. The Beit David Highland Lakes Shul is at 2600 NE 209th Street in Aventura. Rabbi Kelemen will also be the scholar in residence for Friday and Saturday, March 20-21, speaking about “Ancient wisdom for modern minds: bringing the Divine into personal relationships.” For further information, go to bdhls.org, or send an email to shul@bdhls.org

Life in the City BY BARI AUERBACH ‘Aventura Reality TV’ Reality TV shows are all the rage – and many could be filmed right here in Aventura, where true to life dramas take center stage every day! Survivor: …Stranded on Biscayne at rush hour with only a Mercedes for shelter, bottles of Vitamin Water and Rolex watches reminding road warriors how late they’re going to be for personal training sessions at their exclusive gyms and spas. Who will survive the traffic with dignity and grace? Only resilient Aventura drivers who would rather stay stuck in “American Idle” mode than risk running red lights and paying a fortune in fines! True Beauty…There are so many beautiful people around town, the competition would be fierce – but since the show’s title is “True Beauty” that could potentially disqualify a lot of cosmetically enhanced
contenders. Then again, if Botox, collagen, eye lifts, tummy tucks, lipo and implants were cause for elimination, there might not be anyone left to compete! Wife Swap…If a show featured the adventures of Aventura wives trading places - it would probably be really boring! After all, how much different could life be at Williams Island, Porto Vita, Turnberry and various other luxury condos? The ratings would probably be a whole lot better if the show was changed to “Pet Swap” and ladies with tiny dogs dressed in matching outfits had to try squeezing Dobermans into their designer handbags! Rock of Love…While there may not be any aging rock stars looking for love in Aventura, there are quite a few seniors at Classic Residence by Hyatt who can attest to the fact that passion promotes longevity. But the true challenge associated with a love-based reality show is finding a couple that stays together long enough to complete filming an entire season!

Russel Lazega's relaxed law firm gets results in insurance cases BY LYNN CARROLL
ROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE
LC: The Law Office of Russel Lazega is known for getting great results for consumers who have disputes with their insurance companies; at the same, it has a reputation for breaking the mold in terms of what people expect to see when they go to a law office. Is there a relation between the two? RL: Yes, I think there is. I like to think of our office as an alternative-style workplace. Except when we go to court, we work in jeans and T-shirts, and very often we bring our dogs to work. Both staff and attorneys work on flex schedules using digital remote technology. The relaxed atmosphere is what helps us comfortably handle the 1,800-2,500 active cases we routinely have without the burnout you usually find in fast-paced firms. LC: How large a staff does it take to handle that case load? RL: We have a staff of about 40 statewide, in offices in North Miami, Dania, Tallahassee, Winter Park and a small satellite office in St Petersburg. LC: Has the economic crisis affected your practice?
two factors creating problems today: the bad economy means insurance companies are more reluctant to pay claims, and the same bad economy is making people more anxious. When you put them together, it's really tough on those who are in financial straits and have no way of repairing their cars or their homes until their insurance company gets around to repaying them. We're seeing a lot more problems with companies that used to have a better reputation for paying. Often, the only thing that works is taking them to court. LC: Are you involved in outreach programs to help people understand how to deal with insurance issues?
RL: We regularly do seminars throughout the state for various groups such as doctors offices, insurance adjusters and even judges to educate consumers, insurance professionals and attorneys about the nuances of insurance laws and claims. Most recently, we have been giving free seminars for medical office and hospital staff to help them understand the recent changes in Florida's auto insurance law so they can better process claims. ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER
Grandparents show the way Q: I’ve heard you say that grandparents shouldn’t interfere in the raising of their grandchildren. But if grandparents keep their mouths shut all the time, how can they have an influence in their grandchildren’s lives? A: First of all, any adult in a child’s life can lead by example. If your grandchildren see positive characteristics in your lives, I guarantee that they will be influenced by them. And when I say to keep your mouth shut, I mean don’t interfere. If a parents says that children can stay up past what you think should be their bedtime, I believe it’s not your place to say anything. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t spend hours talking to your grandchildren about other things. I would even go so far as to say that if you want to buy a simple biography of Benjamin Franklin, read it together and discuss with them why he advocated going to bed early, that’s your right. But you have to be subtle about it. And even if reading about Ben Franklin has no influence on that one issue, there are many, many other lessons you could convey by reading that book, including the sim-
AVENTURANEWS.COM ple one that reading about historical figures can be fun and entertaining. So all grandparents who are in regular contact with their grandchildren have an influence. I only suggest that you use that influence positively and not interfere if it is going to start a fight of any sort. Q: What can an adult do to overcome an entire childhood spent in an unloving, undemonstrative, unsupported environment? Is it too late for me? If not, how can it be overcome? A: The effects of negative childhood experiences are most serious when they go unrecognized. If an adult’s emotions are bottle up because of the way he was treated as a child, and he doesn’t realize the cause, then he might go through his life without ever coming to terms with his problem, probably never even admitting that he has that particular problem. But once a person recognizes that there is a problem, and especially if he understands the cause, then it is never too late to effect a change. I’m not saying that it will be easy. You might need professional intervention, but just knowing that you need to go for help is a major step in the right direction. One more warning: Don’t expect a miraculous change. If you take up a sport like tennis when you’re an adult, you might become a very good player, but you’re unlikely to become as good as the pros. The same is true for a psychological issue. You can make major strides, but don’t have unrealistic expectations. Instead, learn to take pleasure in each small step, which will encourage you to take more steps and will help you get quite far down the road to recovery.

Prof. Alan Dershowitz presents Guardian of Israel award to Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center distinguished families "Exciting, fascinating, thought provoking and enlightening." These are words used by Rabbi Jonathan Berkun of the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center to describe the events of January 23-24, when nearly 500 young professionals who attended the synagogue's Friday Night Live services that included a dinner and lecture by Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz. ATJC President, Laurence Herrup, said he, "always looks forward to the weekend with Professor Dershowitz. He is an outstanding speaker with the unique ability to bring clarity to otherwise complicated issues." Everyone who listened to Professor Dershowitz's passionate presentation was treated to a unique experience. His fascinating stories drawn from his personal experiences as a Harvard Professor and distinguished attorney were informative, enlightening and entertaining. Professor Dershowitz is not only a brilliant orator, but an inspiring, compelling advocate of the Jewish people and the State of Israel. Dr. Amir Baron, Executive Vice President of ATJC, is a long time personal friend of Dershowitz. Their relationship is the reason Dershowitz has visited ATJC annu-
ally for the past twenty years. Dr. Baron praises him as, "a guardian of Israel, the finest among Jewish intellectuals, a staunch defender of human rights, and a son every Jewish mother aspires to raise." The Friday night event was co-sponsored by a dozen community organizations, each sending a delegation of their young leadership groups. Professor Dershowitz was clearly energized by the overwhelming presence of so many young pro-Israel activists. He dialogued with Rabbi Jonathan Berkun for and fielded questions from the audience well into the night. On Saturday morning, Professor Dershowitz recognized seven synagogue families with ATJC's distinguished Guardian of Israel award:
Clement and April Beyda; Symcha Horowitz; Scott and Maxine King; Dan and Sheila Kleiman; Donald and Lisa Pliner; Andrew and Dr. Silvia Stern; and Oscar and Elaine Wasserman. Following the service in the Soffer Sanctuary in which more than 1,300 people were in attendance, ATJC host- Rabbi Jonathan Berkun ed a private luncheon for the honorees during which Dershowitz praised them for their outstanding leadership, commitment and dedication to the synagogue, community, and State of Israel. William W. Landa, Chairman of the Board of ATJC, saluted the Guardians of Israel. He expressed tremendous pride in the growth of ATJC and in the ability to host the many outstanding speakers, scholars and dignitaries who regularly come to address the congregation. Pain in the legs could be a warning sign BY ROBERT BEASLEY, MD INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGIST MOUNT SINAI CENTER
Many people dismiss leg pain as a normal sideeffect of aging. However, those aches and pains could be the sign of something much more serious. When muscles are being used, they need more blood flow. If arteries are blocked with plaque, the muscles won’t get enough blood during exercise to meet their needs. This is called Peripheral Arterial Disease, or PAD. If left untreated, it can result in leg ulcerations (sores) and eventually even amputation. PAD is also a marker for cardiovascular disease, cerebral vascular disease and kidney artery disease. If left untreated, these conditions can result in heart attack, stroke or uncontrollable hypertension (high blood pressure). What are the symptoms of PAD? Leg pain or cramping that occurs with walking or exercise and goes away at rest Foot or toe wounds that won’t heal or heal very slowly A marked decrease in the temperature of your lower leg or foot particularly com-
pared to the other leg or body. Am I at risk? You are at risk if you have a history of heart disease, heart attack, stroke, or if you are: Age 50 or over A current or former smoker Diabetic Suffering from high blood pressure or abnormal cholesterol African American How can PVD be treated? Quitting smoking and starting a regular exercise program is the first step to beating PAD. A diet low in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol can help. You may be prescribed cholesterol medications or antiplatelet medications (aspirin and Plavix) to help prevent blood clots. What if lifestyle changes and medications are not enough? There are exciting new advances. Cool laser revascularization is a cuttingedge procedure offered at Mount Sinai. A laser is used to vaporize plaque, calcium or blood clots that block arteries in the legs. The laser is delivered through tiny fiber optic catheters about the width of a human hair. Using X-ray guidance, short bursts of “cool” ultraviolet energy vaporize the
blockage into particles that can be excreted. Balloon angioplasty is then performed and a stent inserted, if needed. Sometimes scar tissue forms around a stent, resulting in a new blockage or restenosis. There are new heparin-coated stents that can reduce this risk of restenosis. Finally, blockages can be eliminated through a procedure called atherectomy. A highly precise, high-speed rotating tool is attached to the end of a catheter. The catheter is inserted into an artery and the tool pulverizes the plaque into microscopic particles that can be absorbed into the circulation.
How do I get tested? Doppler and Ultrasound imaging is a non-invasive method to visualize the artery with sound waves and measures the blood flow. Take advantage of a free screening on Wednesday, March 25 at Mount Sinai Aventura, located at 2845 Aventura Blvd./199 St. Hours are 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. To make a reservation, please call 305-674-2298. Blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol screening will also be provided, free of charge. For a physician referral to Dr. Beasley or any other Mount Sinai physician, please call 305-674-CARE (2273).

IRS finally pierces the Swiss Banking veil BY STEVEN N. KLITZNER In the world of tax cheats, the news doesn’t get much bigger. UBS, the largest bank in Switzerland, agreed to provide the U.S. government with the names of those it suspects of using its accounts to evade paying taxes in the United States. The unprecedented move comes after UBS agreed to pay $780 million to settle an investigation of its activities. Federal prosecutors suspected UBS helped Americans evade as much as $300 million a year in taxes from ‘02 to ‘07. According to a lawsuit the Department of Justice filed against UBS in Miami, as many as 52,000 U.S. customers hid their UBS accounts from the government in violation of tax laws. For those using offshore accounts to evade taxes, this should be among the final warnings that they are not safe. Even the wealthiest of tax cheats, the ones using the Swiss banks whose records many considered impenetrable by the U.S. government, are now at risk of total exposure and pros-
ecution by the IRS and the Department of Justice. For several years, the IRS has been moving more and more aggressively toward tax cheats who use offshore accounts to hide their assets. Many tax cheats once used offshore accounts linked to credit cards that then were employed to purchase goods and services in the United States — seemingly a way of keeping money off the IRS’s books. That, of course, stopped working once the IRS forced MasterCard to turn over records of those customers whose cards were linked to offshore accounts. At this point, now that the largest Swiss bank is cooperating with the federal government, there are no safe havens for tax cheats. It’s time to turn yourself in. Steven N. Denise Rubin talks Real Estate Sex sells BY DENISE RUBIN Sex sells! This is an indisputable fact found in every facet of life and seen almost in every product print ad and commercial on TV. Sometimes I wonder why the new development ads feature a bikini clad beauty in a lounge chair instead of photos of the condo interior, exterior or amenities, but it does. I’m not saying that I believe in mixing business with pleasure because I don’t! However, my office looks like the “Next Modeling Agency of Aventura,” and it doesn’t hurt. But, this is not what I refer to when I say sex sells. I don’t mean a sexy realtor, I mean a sexy product. A penthouse with a roof deck that is completely private with a Jacuzzi tucked away where no other units can see you. How about a condo in Aqualina on the ocean where “Il Molino” sits in the lobby and you can dine and then go home to the 57th floor. Just the other day I went to see a client on the 31st floor of “Ocean II”, I entered through the private elevator and when the door opened I was greeted by an expanse of ocean vistas on one side, city and Intracoastal views on the other side. There was a stunning décor
by the “Gershon Group” featuring a huge salt water fish tank of which I’m an avid fan. Clown Tygers, Lion fish and more, low and behold, it was an illusion created by high-tech software on a plasma screen. Then, I visited a client at “Belle Mare” in “Williams Island” with its super sexy lobby designed by Steven G – the finishes, the flowers, the news room surrounded by plasmas and news from around the world. I went up to the penthouse and WOW- a fireplace in the living room, a pool on the roof, a smart system and talk about being invited to see someone’s etchings. Well the art was fabulous, a museum to behold. One of the most expensive dollars per square foot condo is the “Setai” in South Beach. And why? Sexy. Bentley Braman invited me to a dinner in the most exquisite Thai, spiritual, incredibly sexy restaurant. There is a private club and ambiance galore. One listing I have has a huge master bath with onyx floors and walls and a large steam shower with enough jets for the whole “Jets” team and next to it is a towel warmer drawer. What a turn on! Call Denise Rubin at 305.409.0019 for all your Real Estate needs and visit www.deniserubin.com for all listings and virtual tours.

Come share your heart with Israel Good for you...good for Israel BY EILEEN GLASTEIN Bnai Zion has been supporting humanitarian projects in Israel for over 100 years. Until now, it has been the best kept secret in philanthropy. We take care of disabled adults, at risk children, educational training, along with our cornerstone project, Bnai Zion Medical Center in Haifa. To see our rich history and the projects we are funding please visit us at www.bnaizion.org. The hospital in Haifa is the same size as Aventura Hospital and there are many ways to build bridges between the two. We are presently working with the hospital to offer joint programming and exchange of ideas. Many residents visit Israel and have been to both hospitals, along with the large local Israeli population that has the opportunity to have seen both institutions. Although we may someday lose the one difference between hospitals, Bnai Zion hospital delivers over 5,000 babies every year. Fundraising! What works in this recession climate? Today’s market is more volatile than ever and many of us are concerned for our financial futures. And, with good reason. Now while there are options
for your money to grow it is important not to wait until it’s too late. Forget about the stress of low bank rates. Don’t let your blood pressure go up as the market goes down. Imagine if you could lock in a fixed interest rate FOR LIFE, knowing that no matter what the outside economic factors are, you will continue to be secure with a cash flow for the rest of your life. Here’s how it works. Make a gift to Bnai Zion (minimum $5,000) and receive a high rate of income for life. The rate is governed by the insurance actuary rates. That means the older you are the higher the rate of interest. Such a deal! In addition, part of your income is tax-free and you receive a tax deduction for a portion of the gift. This is a win/win. You win now with high interest rate (monthly or quarterly) and Israel wins when you have passed with whatever is left in the annuity. What a great way to benefit you now and Israel in the future. Call me or email me and we can talk about your personal financial goals. Eileen Glastein, Bnai Zion S.E. Director 305-9490076 eileen.glastein@bnaizion.org. Visit our website for more information www.bnaizion.org and be on the lookout for more Bnai Zion news.
