The Continental Group, Klein and Hoffman, Inc. host Alberto M. Carvalho, Superintendent Miami-Dade County Public Schools BY BARI AUERBACH The Continental Group, renowned for expert property management, along with Klein and Hoffman Structural and Restoration Engineers recently hosted a firstclass Aventura Marketing Council meeting featuring Alberto M. Carvalho, Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Hundreds of AMC business and community leaders gathered at the Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort were welcomed by AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Greenberg Traurig, who challenged guests to an international "geography bowl" highlighting one of Carvalho's most emphatic points: "In a global economy our kids need more access to the world outside their boundaries than ever before." Next, Continental Group regional president Andrew Lester and Klein and Hoffman vice president Henry Castro shared their respective corporate success stories. "The Continental Group started in the Aventura area and just kept growing one community at a time," Lester said. "Today, we provide property management and maintenance services to over 1,300 condo and homeowner associations with 300,000 units under management and 6,000 employees

across Florida. "Our vision is to continuously evolve and provide 'added value' enhancing residents' lifestyles with innovative technologies as well as highly responsive, personalized service exceeding expectations." Castro explained Klein and Hoffman specializes in all facets of structural and restoration engineering. Complementary K&H skills include new structural design, structural rehabilitation, environmental, transportation, building envelope, curtainwall, waterfront structures and capital maintenance planning. K&H engineers also have extensive experience in assessing the condition of facades, window systems, structural framework, roofs, balconies and plaza decks. "Our experience in both new design and repair increases both the quality and value of our engineering services. K&H develops projects from concept to completion on schedule and within budget - engineering 'peace of mind" into every project." Turning to foundations for quality education, Carvalho was introduced by his friend and colleague, Region Center II Assistant Superintendent Enid Weisman. "I inherited a school system with 22,000 teachers and 350,000 children expecting a quality education regardless of financial woes," Carvalho said. "Bold actions were

immediately taken to stabilize the fiscal viability of our school system. "We reduced the budget by about $123 million mid-fiscal year. In the process, we also reduced salaries of the highest-paid administrators - reinvesting those dollars into educational programs. "Despite facing a loss potential of $350 million because of budget shortfalls in Tallahassee, I guarantee no teacher will lose their job and no educational programs will be compromised. The arts, music and bilingual education will never be the victims of budget cuts no matter what we have to do. "We cannot forget our core function teaching kids there is nobility in every profession if you do it with your heart and your mind; and if you perfect your skill and do it honestly. Our educational institution has a greater function than just teaching reading and math - we have to 'create community.' It's up to us to help kids get to see horizons that stretch out far beyond what they see from where they sit today. "We're going to Tallahassee to fight against losses to educational funding. This is an opportunity to speak in unison and say not one more dollar should be taken from public education. I believe through targeted reductions we can still ensure that no educational programs will be cut and we'll be able to

Aventura Marketing Council Recognizes Ofc. Luis Chaidez Officer Chaidez was assigned to investigate two Aventura residences about possible drug activity. He watched the residences for a period of two months, during which he was able to develop informants and gather valuable investigative information. His hard work led to the execution of a search warrant, the arrest of several subjects and the eventual shutting down of two drug houses in the City of Aventura. Later during the month officer Chaidez was conducting surveillance in the area of Winn Dixie when he observed three suspicious subjects. The subjects were stopped and a field investigation led to the recovery of dangerous drugs that would have otherwise been sold on the street.

Aventura Hospital offers new insights in lung health Aventura Hospital and the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center are committed to raising awareness about the risks associated with lung cancer and the new innovative treatment options that are available. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women, according to the American Cancer Society. Although the disease is rare among people under the age of 45, more people die from lung cancer than from colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. In conjunction with the March increase in federal tobacco tax, Aventura Hospital and the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center will sponsor a free educational seminar on lung health awareness Thursday, March 26th at 12 noon. Marc Saltzman, MD, Medical Oncologist, and Matthew Abramowitz, MD, Radiation Oncologist, will host a panel discussion for the community highlighting the latest research developments and preventive measures to promote a smoke-free and cancer-free lifestyle. The average lifetime chance that a person will develop lung cancer is one in

thirteen for men and one in sixteen for woman. It has been predicted that in 2009 approximately 215,020 new cases of lung cancer will be detected in the United States and that approximately 161,840 people will die of this disease. Although these numbers include both smokers and non-smokers, the risks are much greater for smokers. In addition to offering a full range of diagnostic and treatment services that are supervised by board certified medical professionals, the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center also offers a variety of support groups, including smoking cessation, to assist those interested through compassionate mutual aid and education. To learn more about these and other available treatment options, join the group on March 26th at the Aventura Hospital Medical Arts Building, 21110 Biscayne Boulevard, Suite 101, Aventura. For more information on this free seminar and to RSVP, please call 1-888-256-7692. Light refreshments will be served. Free garage parking is also available.

VIEWPOINT

In Sudan, peace or justice: Horse and sparrow economics We must choose BY JIM HIGHTOWER

BY DENISE BELL The International Criminal Court's (ICC's) decision to issue an arrest warrant against Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir for war crimes and crimes against humanity was widely anticipated. So, too, was the Sudanese government's brutal and calculating reaction. Humanitarian aid agencies responsible for the survival of 2.2 million Darfuris were swiftly expelled from the country. Sudan's response to the arrest warrant poses a fundamental test for President Obama's administration: Will justice become a bargaining chip in the new administration's human rights strategy on Sudan? The expulsion of the aid agencies, and the utter contempt for the people whose very lives depend on them, fits a horrific pattern of atrocities against Darfur's civilian population, and underscores the true nature of Bashir's regime. That pattern has continued for six years because of a culture of impunity. The international community has shown little spine in trying to deter Sudan from its campaign of terror against its own people. Now, by effectively holding the population of Darfur hostage, Sudan is calling the international community's hand. Will the world hold President Bashir accountable for crimes committed in Darfur, or will it allow Bashir to blackmail his way out of justice? The international community, led by the United Nations Security Council, the African Union, and the League of Arab States, must respond by immediately demanding that Sudan permit aid agencies to return to the country and continue their life-saving work in Darfur. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, the United States must also demonstrate unambiguous commitment to ending impunity and not deferring the case against Bashir. Even before the Sudanese government expelled aid agencies as retaliation for the ICC arrest warrant, some in the international community were pressing hard for a deferral of the case against Bashir, urging the U.N. Security Council to invoke a provision in the ICC's treaty to suspend the case. They argued that executing the arrest warrant would undermine the commitment of Bashir's political party, which dominates the coalition government, and other ruling elites to achieve peace in Darfur and continue implementing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA)

that ended the 21-year war between north and south Sudan. But such an argument sets up a false choice between justice and peace. President Obama can take two important steps to demonstrate that justice and peace not only can, but must, go hand-in-hand. He should publicly and unequivocally continue to oppose any attempt to defer Bashir's prosecution, sending a clear message to the world that his administration is committed to achieving accountability for the atrocities in Darfur and will no longer allow Darfuris to be held hostage by the regime in Sudan. Mr. Obama should also appoint a special envoy on Sudan as soon as possible to deal with the critical situations in Darfur and across Sudan. A special envoy would help ensure that a viable peace process develops in Darfur and all parties to the CPA get back on track in implementing the agreement. And while media reports indicate the Obama administration has decided to appoint a special envoy on Sudan, it is critical that the selection of the envoy be expedited to ensure there is a dedicated high-level official to focus immediately on the aggressive and rights-violating behavior of the Sudanese government in a postarrest warrant environment. Every time the Sudanese government has blocked humanitarian aid, its leaders have blinked when faced with a unified international front demanding that civilians have access to essential water, food, and medicine. This forceful response is needed now more ever to ensure that 2.2 million Darfuris are not punished for the arrest warrant against Bashir. President Obama should demand that the Sudanese government rescind its punitive decision on humanitarian aid operations. At the same time, by taking a firm position against interference by the U.N. Security Council in the ICC's work, he can demonstrate that the world will not stand for impunity in Darfur. Even as aid groups are being kicked out of Sudan, Darfuris on the ground are standing by their support for the ICC arrest warrant. Better than anyone, they know that what has happened in Darfur is a crime and that the perpetrators should be apprehended and prosecuted. President Obama should listen to them. -Denise Bell is the Darfur campaigner for Amnesty International USA.

Time for another Gooberhead Award presented periodically to those in the news who've got their mouths running 100 miles per hour but forgot to put their brains in gear. Today's Goober is a repeat winner Rudy Giuliani! The former New York City mayor has long been a stalwart defender of the Wall Street crowd that has lavished campaign money on him over the years. So - even though workaday Americans are absolutely outraged and exasperated by the extravagant bonuses that failed Wall Street bankers are paying to themselves, using our bailout money for their self-enrichment Rudy has stood tall for banker excess: "If somehow you take that bonus out of the economy, it really will create unemployment," he cried. For the bankers? No, for the little people, says Giuliani. He almost teared up as he explained that the multi-million dollar payouts to high-flying Wall Streeters trickle down to waiters in swank New York restaurants, to clerks at Tiffanys and Gucci, to sales staff at Lamborghini dealers, and to real estate agents selling mansions in the Hamptons.

Even gardeners and garbage collectors get their cut, Hizzoner claimed. He is spouting the age-old theory of "horse and sparrow" economics. This approach says that if you let horses gorge on oats, some of that grain will pass through their systems and be deposited on the ground for the sparrows to enjoy. Not everyone shares our Gooberhead's enthusiasm for the horse and sparrow theory. Republican Sen. Richard Shelby, for example, is calling for a strict limit on the pay of bank executives who are getting our bailout money. "The way they've spent it," he said, "is getting close to being criminal." And Sen. Claire McCaskill is even more blunt about the rank greed of top bankers. Demanding that no bailout banker should be paid more than the President of the United States, she added: "These people are idiots." -For more information on Jim Hightower's work - and to subscribe to his award-winning monthly newsletter, The Hightower Lowdown, visit www.jimhightower.com <http://www.jimhightower.com>

Debra Marlowe, LMFT, prepared to counsel in range of family needs BY LYNN CARROLL In these uncertain times, many people have trouble dealing with stress over the economic changes forced upon them, says Debra Marlowe, a licensed marriage and family therapist, parent coordinator and parenting coach. "I'm seeing more and more stress and fear related to the economy," she says. "People need help developing coping skills just to go to work and try to deal with the tension around them. Sometimes spouses need help understanding the economic pressures involved so that they can be dealt with as a team effort, not as something detrimental to the relationship." Marlowe brings to each session nearly 15 years of experience with the wide range of situations families face. She can help at any stage, from the premarital stage forward, as couples look to change relationships or be better parents. There's also a real need to help parents who are separating, as well as their children. That, she says, is where her experience in parent coordination pays off.

Often, children are overlooked victims of family stress, Marlowe says, a problem sometimes exhibiting as obesity in a growing number of emotionally distressed children. "I have no tolerance for a child being uncomfortable in any way," she says. "When you're unhappy, there's a domino effect. Long-term mental/emotional health sometimes requires systemic physical changes. Since I have many years of personal experience with nutrition and exercise, I've been able to put together healthy menus and exercise programs and incorporate them into my practice along with mental skills to develop real changes in self-esteem." "Some physicians use me on an asneeded basis to help their patients achieve mental and emotional balance so they can achieve the skills for real change in taking better care of themselves." Debra Marlowe's office is located at 2999 NE 191st Street, Suite 703. For more information or to make an appointment, call 786-436-3363.

Historically Yours BY BOB DIAMOND JEFFERSON’S CURIOUS LEGACY According to Harvard Professor Henry L. Gates, Jr. (The Trials of Phillis Wheatley), a 7-old girl was captured in Africa and brought by slave ship to Boston in 1761. Mrs. Susanna Wheatley purchased the child, named her Phillis and taught her to read and write. By age 11, Phillis began writing poetry and at 17, she immortalized the Boston Massacre in her poem that was published in several newspapers. Phillis’s first book of poems, however, remained unpublished, as not enough Bostonians believed that an African slave possessed the ability to write poetry. The great philosophers of the 18th century Enlightenment, including Bacon, Hume and Hegel, were “vexed by the question of whether Africans were human beings or another species of men?” The decision was made to assemble some of the finest minds in Colonial America to determine whether Phillis wrote the poetry. She “passed with flying colors” and became the first person of African descent to write a book of poetry published in the English language. She contradicted justification

for slavery and became proof that African slaves were not members of an inferior race. She sent a poem wishing success to Gen. George Washington. He responded, invited their meeting and praised “her poetic genius.” Nine years after Jefferson’s words of equality in his Declaration of Independence, he published in Paris his book “Notes on the State of Virginia”. He challenged Phillis and alleged the inferiority of the black mind: “The compositions published under her name are below the dignity of criticism.” He believed that although Africans “have human souls, they lack intellectual endowments of other races.” Phillis, he said, “was an example of a product of religion, without being the product of intellect.” Jefferson believed that there are “real distinctions which nature has made, separating blacks from whites.” Following the Revolution, blacks took on Jefferson’s challenge of inferiority. According to Gates, “Jefferson’s curious legacy became their strongest motivation to create literature that would prove him wrong.” Although Jefferson’s highest ideals became the foundation of American democracy, DNA, involving Sally Hemings, also established he was a man of human contradictions and frailties.

Get the settlement you deserve with Snyder & Gonzalez BY LYNN CARROLL

ROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE

BMS: A lot of times, trying to handle a situation like this without legal counsel can cause even more problems. Attorneys can not only maximize the monetary amount in a case, but also negotiate down any possible future liens. For example, in one case, I reduced a $45,000 hospital lien to $22,500-something a lay person wouldn't have the knowledge or experience to do. If you're dealing with an insurance company, hiring an attorney levels the playing field and also increases your credibility.

LC: What areas of law does Snyder & Gonzalez practice? Barry M. Snyder: We have two major practice fields: personal injury cases, such as auto accidents or wrongful death, and criminal defense, such as misdemeanor and felony cases, state and federal. Having both specialties gives us an advantage in the courtroom, where versatility can be critical. My partner Victor Gonzalez has been extremely successful in applying his experience as an accountant and businessman in commercial cases. Attorney Julio Munoz has been invaluable in personal injury cases as a result of his background as a former insurance adjuster and insurance attorney. And my own experience as a police officer, certified mediator and prosecutor is often very helpful.

LC: What are your interests outside the legal sphere?

BMS: I'm a dive boat captain and dive instructor. I'm also a life coach and enjoy helping others. I'm involved in the South Florida Shomrim Society, an organization that advances the criminal justice system and supports public safety officers, and the Vision World Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps increase independence in the lives of blind and visually impaired people.

LC: Is this what gives Snyder & Gonzalez its edge over competitors? BMS: I would also add that we really care about our clients. When someone calls us, they can rest assured that they will receive the best legal care available. We realize that our clients are our greatest assets, and we treat them accordingly. We're often recommended and hired by other lawyers and by doctors, which says a lot about our reputation.

Barry M. Snyder, Attorney

LC: Suppose someone suffers a personal injury and the party at fault or their insurer agrees to settle out of court. Is it still a good idea to hire an attorney?

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER

Who’s being selfish? Q: I’m 65 and have been married for over 30 years to a man who is several years younger than me. Until recently we’ve had a great sex life, having sex at least five times a week. But about five years ago he just stopped having sex. I talked to him about it and tried to get him to go for help, but the only thing that that accomplished is that he stopped talking to me about it. A few months ago we moved to a new apartment complex. The man across the hall is very handy and since my husband is all thumbs, he very generously helped us put some things together. We became friends and discovered that the attraction was stronger than that. Since his wife hates sex (and I know it’s true because she’s told me so, though she

AVENTURANEWS.COM

doesn’t know about her husband and me) and my husband won’t have sex, we starting having an affair. This affair has really made an important change in my life. Everyone who knows me, including my doctor, says I look much better. I don’t think my husband would care if he knew, but I do feel guilty when I’m around this other man’s wife. What should I do about this? A: I cannot take away your feelings of guilt, but I can tell you not to act out of guilt but instead consider very carefully what steps you do take. I certainly would not advise speaking with the man’s wife unless he has already decided to leave her and you to leave your husband, because otherwise confessing might bring a lot of unhappiness to everyone. Now, while I have never encountered two couples making any kind of arrangement where the sexually active spouses kept up a discreet affair, that might be a possible outcome, though the more likely one would be that the marriages will end. Whatever you do, think very carefully. You might want to consult with a therapist just to get some help deciding where your best interest lie before finally deciding.

Purina 2009 Walk for the Animals benefits The Humane Society of Greater Miami Adopt-A-Pet 9th annual event attracts over 3,000 participants It was a record gathering of 3,300 participants and their dogs at Bayfront Park. The occasion: The 9th Annual Purina Walk for the Animals. It was a most amazing scene as dogs and humans pushed toward the starting line in order to participate in the one-mile stroll around Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami. Before the start of the walk the crowd was greeted by Miami-Dade County Comm. Sally Heyman, Grand Marshall; University of Miami President Donna Shalala, Leader of the Pack; Divine Savior Church, and Academy Principal Ben Troge, M. Ed, Education, Chairman. Then, exactly at 10 a.m. -- it was off and walking. For people who arrived early and those folks who didn't participate in the actual walk, there were lots of activities to enjoy. The Miami Science Museum had fascinating displays; the Miami Children's Museum and Miami Seaquarium provided interactive exhibits; there was a bounce-house, inflatable basketball courts, face painting, arts and crafts, games -- and more for the

kiddies. Vendors offered great food and there was a special bakery tent filled with mouth-watering pastries enjoyed with a fabulous cup of Café Pilon coffee. The Walk for the Animals is the Humane Society of Greater Miami's largest annual event. This year's event was a success as the Humane Society of Greater Miami met their event fundraising goal. All proceeds benefit the more than 250 animals in their care on a daily basis. The Humane Society of Greater Miami finds homes for more than 2,000 animals per year. Since it receives no government funding, it depends 100% on private donations and special fundraising events such as the Purina Walk for the Animals. Every dollar raised from the walk goes toward sheltering more than 250 homeless cats and dogs everyday and supporting important programs like low-cost and free spay/neuter services, quality adoptions, humane education and pet therapy. Transition to transformation BY PATRICIA C. FRANK Life is a journey, a journey from one place to another, from birth to death and perhaps beyond. Within this grand expedition there are several developmental categories; physical, spiritual, emotional, philosophical and psychological. Life is all about transformation. It is all about growth and change. To be alive is to be in the process of transforming on a daily basis. You experience growth and change in every aspect of your life and at every stage of your development. However, before any metamorphosis can take place. Before you can be transformed into this new version of yourself there is a transitory stage you must pass through. It is the transition stage. This stage is rarely understood or acknowledged. When you are in transition you are passing from one state or condition to another. Each of these has a certain length that determines how long it will take you to go from one end to the other end. The length is based on your unique qualities and character. Once you step into the tunnel or set foot on the bridge you must keep

going until you reach the other side. Sometimes, this journey does not proceed in a straight line. There may be road blocks that must be overcome. You might have to remove these road blocks or you might have to find a way to go around them. There may even be times when you have to sit down and rest before you can continue on your journey. Most people dislike the transition state, even though it is not a permanent state of being. They feel it is neither here nor there. It is nebulous and undefined. They are anxious to get to the new place. They report feeling edgy, ungrounded and off center. They are often frustrated by the process. They become impatient and try to rush through this stage. Because of their frustration they may inadvertently sabotage their outcome without realizing it. This will only delay the process. People fail to appreciate the value of being in transition. The transition stage allows the, physical, spiritual, emotional, philosophical and psychological states to catch up with each other. This is invaluable. If you relax and accept this phase, you will benefit, in the long run, from being, “in transition.” Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864,212-308-0309

Financial Self-Defense: the Most Common Investment Scams and How to Avoid Them BY BRUCE A. DAVIS, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT Notices & Prohibitions: The Morgan Stanley Legal and Compliance Department has approved this article for use exactly as it appears. It may not be changed in any way. However, longer articles may be run in two or more parts as long as any disclaimers also appear in the respective parts. Please note that the nonsolicitation clause must appear at the end of every article. Financial Self-Defense: the Most Common Investment Scams and How to Avoid Them Submitted By: Bruce A. Davis, Senior Vice President Branch Name: Aventura, Florida Phone Number: 305-937-7108 Every year, scams are becoming increasingly complex as con artists discover new, sophisticated ways to fleece the public. Unfortunately, even the well-known deceptions still fool victims. Whether new or old, con artists prey upon the same vulnerabilities in our human nature. We can better protect ourselves by first knowing what kind of fraudulent operations exist and how they function. Affinity Fraud According to the Securities and Exchange Commission*, affinity fraud is an investment scam that preys upon members of groups, such as religious or ethnic communities, professional groups or the elderly, by exploiting the trust and friendships that exist within the group. Victims abandon their natural sense of caution and good judgment because the swindler pretends to be, or may be, one of the group. The most common affinity scams are pyramid schemes, which create the false illusion that an investment program is successful by taking money from a new investor and using it to make payments to previous investors. Prime Bank Schemes Victims are taken in by the lure of a very high-yield, tax-free return that, supposedly, is only available to extremely wealthy individuals through off-shore trades of bank notes. You are required to execute confidentiality agreements and not consult an attorney, accountant or financial planner. The secrecy is exciting and makes you feel exclusive and important. There are no such legitimate programs. Once your money is turned over, it is gone—the only person enjoying a high-yield, tax-free return is the con artist. Personal Information Scams We’ve all heard of identity theft: thieves steal your private financial information and use it to open credit cards in your name, buy a car, get a driver’s license, open

bank accounts and write bad checks. They can steal your information directly by taking your wallet, checks, financial statements or credit card receipts from your mailbox or trash can. Thieves can get the same information indirectly by hacking into computers, stealing client data while on the job or diverting your mail with a change-of-address form. Frequently, victims will give an unscrupulous person their private financial information simply because they need help. The paperwork that senior citizens must deal with for medical insurance claims and prescription benefits is overwhelming. Con artists may use the phone or E-mail to pose as the agent of a legitimate health or life insurance company. They may offer to fill out forms, file claims, facilitate payments or straighten out a fake problem with your account, meanwhile asking to verify your social security number or your bank account number. Ways to Protect Yourself • Discuss with others. Many investors have been spared tragedy because they had the good sense to ask an accountant, an attorney or a financial planner to review and evaluate an investment before getting into it. A licensed financial advisor can help you determine if the investment is suitable for you and your personal financial goals, and an attorney may see warning signs that you have missed regarding its legitimacy. • Insist on written information on an investment product—and read it carefully. Ask tough questions and check out everything. Be very skeptical of an investment that you must keep confidential and is not in writing. • Never let someone pressure you to make an immediate decision. Don’t feel like you’re missing an opportunity if you don’t rush into an investment. Wise financial decisions take time to investigate and evaluate. • Beware of strangers who guarantee spectacular profits and quick returns. These are hollow lures to encourage you to relinquish your money. Successful con artists can sound very professional and make the riskiest and strangest deal sound safe and legitimate. • Never give out your personal financial information unless you have initiated the contact. Invest in a shredder to destroy credit card offers and any other papers you discard that contain private information. • Report fraud. Don’t let fear or embarrassment keep you from telling the authorities about abuse. Frequently, victims keep quiet because they feel humiliated for falling for the scam and don’t want their family or friends to find out. Reporting a scheme will help others to not fall prey.

Design by Design BY SCOTT KIMBALL AND JERI ROSENTHAL KIMBALL The way of the Web As I sit in my office in Miami and click the send button that takes this article to the Aventura News offices, attached to an email, to an editor whom I have never met, or spoken to, I cannot help but marvel at the way the internet has altered the way we work, play, and communicate with each other. The way interior designers work, or will need to work in order to be competitive, is changing. Technologies like CAD, scanners, digital cameras, e-mail, and computer presentations have all become quite common. When asked by a client to see a portfolio, it is more likely they will be presented with an on-line presentation than with the “old school” boards and drawings. Our clients in other parts of the country or abroad find the internet to be an invaluable tool. What could be easier or more affordable than sending your thoughts and plans via cyberspace! Clients are also finding the web to be a very useful tool in researching style and

design ideas while enjoying the comfort of home. Many interior designers, even the most talented, experienced and skilled, seem reluctant to embrace this new technology. As they say, “old habits die hard”! However as the world becomes increasingly competitive a designer will benefit with flexibility and the ability to offer both technological options and the hands-on options of sample boards and hand-drawn perspectives if that is what the client desires. In keeping with the times, our company has developed a web-based program whereas our clients can follow the daily progress of their project with the click of a mouse. There are many phases in the design and construction process so this aids the client in accessing up to date information 24 hours a day 7 days a week. We are still a long way from using the internet for all business interactions. Some clients still prefer the hands on approach, which is a wonderful method also. We take pride in having both options available for our clients. Whatever works best for the client is what is best for us. mra (michael rosenthal associates) phone: 305.592.0040, fax: 305.592.5144, e-mail: info@mradsgn.net, website: www.mradsgn.com

2009 Mercedes CL has it all — luxury, styling, technology Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The 2009 Mercedes Benz CL Coupe is, quite frankly, an incredible piece of automotive machinery. If luxury, styling and state-of-the-art technology are what you want in an automobile, then this is the car for you. The flagship Mercedes-Benz CL coupe lineup includes four models — the V-8 powered CL550 4MATIC (our test car), the rear-wheel-drive CL63 AMG (with an all-AMG V-8) and the 12-cylinder CL600 and CL65 AMG. While the CL550 is powered by a 5.5-liter V-8 engine delivering 382 hp and 391 pound-feet of torque; the CL63 AMG features a 6.3-liter V-8 that produces 518 hp and 465 pounds-feet of torque. One of the most powerful naturally aspirated production V-8s ever, the high-rpm engine has many features derived from AMG’s successful racing efforts. The 4MATIC all-wheel drive model is

standard for 2009. Mercedes engineers reason that as modern all-wheel-drive systems become even more refined, they are becoming increasingly popular, especially in the luxury car market. The 4MATIC model is differentiated by new 18-inch wheels with a distinctive seven-split-spoke design. The 4MATIC system has full-time allwheel-drive that’s integrated into the seven-speed automatic transmission. The system fits right into the standard CL body and utilizes the existing front suspension (gone are the special parts and wider transmission tunnel that were necessary on earlier 4MATIC systems). The extra gears and shafts that drive the front wheels now weigh only 145 pounds more than the rear-wheel-drive model. Beginning from the right side of the transmission tail section, a driveshaft powers a front final drive and differential unit just to the right of the engine oil pan, and the left front axle shaft passes through a tube in the oil pan. The CL550 4MATIC also comes with new standard equipment that includes heated and active ventilated front seats and the Keyless-Go system. Many CLs are ordered with the optional AMG sport package, which includes deeper front and rear aprons, AMG side sills and 19-inch

Heart Healthy BY GERVASIO LAMAS, M.D. Chief of the Columbia University Division of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center

When we think of cardiac surgery, we typically think of “openheart” surgery, when doctors open the chest to reach the heart to repair or replace valves or perform a bypass procedure. In recent years, however, surgeons have developed new minimally invasive techniques that give patients another option in treatment. Gervasio Lamas, M.D., chief of the new Columbia University Division of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, describes the procedure and shares some of its advantages. What is minimally invasive cardiac surgery? Minimally invasive surgery achieves the same goal as open-heart surgery, but it is accomplished with reduced trauma to the body by targeting the area of the heart that requires treatment. Surgeons reach the troubled area through a smaller incision – approximately six inches or less, rather than the 12- to 18-inch incision used in a conventional open-heart procedure. Typically, the surgeon makes the incision between the ribs, instead of cutting through the sternum, or breastbone, to reach the heart. This provides more stability to the chest wall and is more beneficial to the patient. What are the advantages of minimally invasive cardiac surgery? Because the incisions are smaller, the amount of trauma to the body is reduced significantly. Patients experience less pain and less blood loss, and there also is a reduced risk of infection. The length of your hospital stay is reduced as well. Patients who undergo a minimally invasive procedure generally stay in the hospital for four days, while patients who have open-heart surgery can remain in the hospital for 10 days to two weeks.

Best of all, you can expect to return to your normal life much faster with minimally invasive cardiac surgery. And, as you might expect, there is less scaring compared to the open-heart procedure. Do all cardiac surgeons perform minimally invasive procedures? No, and the level expertise of those who do can vary significantly. It definitely takes a very specific skill set that is developed over years of performing the procedure. Mount Sinai is fortunate to have surgeons who are highly trained and experienced in both minimally invasive and traditional techniques of cardiothoracic surgery. Dr. Joseph Lamelas, our new chief of cardiac surgery, is recognized internationally as a pioneer in minimally invasive cardiac surgery and is the inventor of the oneman minimally invasive Miami Method. He has developed widely used techniques in minimally invasive valve repair and lectures nationally and internationally on the procedure. Dr. Lamelas’ partner, Dr. Roy Williams, is also a leader in using minimally invasive techniques in the early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer; and Dr. Angelo LaPietra, who has been in practice with Dr. Lamelas and Dr. Williams since 2003, is skilled in minimally invasive valve surgery, thoracic aortic aneurysm surgery, and implantation and removal of electronic cardiac devices such as pacemakers and automatic cardiac defibrillators. When is minimally invasive surgery the best option? Minimally invasive techniques have been used successfully in a variety of cardiac and thoracic procedures. However, although each case is different, it is generally quite reasonable to seek out a minimally invasive surgical option. Patients should work closely with their cardiologist and consult with or seek a second opinion from a surgeon skilled in minimally invasive surgery to determine which option is best for them. For more information or for a physician referral, please call 305-674-CARE (2273).
