Bernstein Osberg-Braun & de Moraes, Immigration Attorneys host Consul General global gathering Meeting introduces Aventura Marketing Council 'International Committee' BY BARI AUERBACH With the mission to help the international business community compete in the global economy, the Aventura Marketing Council has formed a new International Committee co-chaired by immigration attorney Roger Bernstein and Fernando Levy Hara, principal of G&D Developers. Beyond gaining local notoriety, the International Committee recently garnered international attention at an AMC Chairman's Roundtable luncheon attended by Consul Generals from around the world at The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club. AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Greenberg Traurig helped welcome AMC business and community leaders, special guests and dignitaries to the event hosted by Bernstein Osberg-Braun & de Moraes one of the most experienced immigration law firms in Florida focusing exclusively on corporate non-immigrant and immigrant visas, labor certifications, waivers, litigation, appeals, motions to re-open and consular processing. "In this economy, it's critical that we bring foreign investment to the U.S.," Bernstein said. "One of our firm's specialties is the 'U.S. Foreign Investor Program' enabling foreign nationals to invest in high unemployment areas and create jobs. We also assist corporations and hospitals in acquiring visas for highly-qualified personnel with extraordinary abilities; help families bring relatives from abroad; defend clients' constitutional rights in Federal court; and represent foreign governments in aiding their citizens. "Essentially, we're in the business of helping people. We want all of our clients to realize their American dream. The firm has set a long-term goal over the next decade to create freedom and opportunities

for over 10,000 people‌ with community support, we look forward to reaching that goal." During the meeting, the Aventura Marketing Council earned high praise for creating the International Committee from the following Consul Generals and Trade Commissioners eager to participate in win-win economic partnerships and business building endeavors: Diego E. Alvarez Rivera, Deputy Consul General and Trade Commissioner, Argentina; The Hon. Gladys JohnsonSands, Consul General, Bahamas; George Mayers, Consul / Liaison Officer, Barbados; Claudio Ramirez, Consul and Trade Commissioner, Canada; The Hon. Hiroshi Yamaguchi, Consul General, Japan; Dana Klein, Hon. Consul General, Republic of Macedonia; The Hon. Juan Miguel Gutierrez-Tinoco, Consul General, Mexico; The Hon. Rakieb M. Khudabux, Consul General, Republic of Suriname; and Gabriel Perez Krieb, Trade Commissioner, Mexico. Each country's representative shared universal desires to surmount global economic challenges through investment and trade partnerships as well as strengthening ties linked to industries such as tourism, manufacturing, technology and agriculture. "In spite of distance, many things can be united," said the Hon. Hiroshi Yamaguchi, Consul General of Japan. On behalf of the International Committee, co-chair Fernando Levy Hara noted, "We're looking forward to working with leaders from Argentina on our first event furthering the purpose of the International Committee to cultivate strategic alliances with global partners that can develop and enhance trade and investment opportunities in the U.S. particularly northeast Miami-Dade County. "We're also planning to establish many

Hampton Inn hosts Jan Solomon, "From Business Breakdown to Business Breakthroughs" Members of Aventura Marketing Council's Business Development Committee recently filled the meeting room at Hampton Inn Hallandale Beach / Aventura located at 1000 South Federal Highway for a special presentation by FIU Biscayne Bay Campus Development Officer Jan Solomon, a PhD candidate in International Relations and Global Leadership. The presentation titled "From Business Breakdown to Business Breakthroughs" walked members through the essential qualities required of 21st century leaders including masterful communication skills consisting of "speaking", "listening", "self awareness / self assessment", "relationships / partnerships", "vision", "strategy", "actions" and of course "breakdowns." "In the gap between the breakdown and the breakthroughs there are three

pivotal elements to achieve a better outcome," says Solomon. "First, 'make a public declaration' of the breakdown by letting people know. Second, 'kill the alternative,' meaning not to evacuate the project and to consciously decide to work through it. And third, gather the stakeholders and agree to get through the breakdown by taking decisive and immediate actions." "Jan's presentation was remarkable," said AMC's Business Development Committee Chairman Peter L. Fishel, CPA. "All who attended were inspired and motivated to strengthen their leadership skills and work through those challenging breakdowns that are certain to find us all." Historically Yours BY BOB DIAMOND BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: THE BAWDY PRINTERPHILOSOPHER The following is a condensed reprint of a 1747 article in Franklin’s “The Pennsylvania Gazette” describing the speech of Miss Polly Baker, before a Court of Judicature near Boston, where she was prosecuted the fifth time for having a bastard child: “Which influenced the Court to dispense with her Punishment and induced one of her Judges to marry her the next Day.” “I am a poor unhappy Woman, who have no money to fee Lawyers to plead for me. All I humbly hope is that my fine be remitted. This is the Fifth Time that I have been dragged before you. I defy anyone to say that I have ever wronged Man, Woman or Child. I have brought five fine Children into the World; I have maintained them well at my own industry, without burdening the Township. I readily consented to the only Proposal of Marriage that was ever made

to me, which was when I was a Virgin; but too easily confiding in the Person’s Sincerity that made it, I unhappily lost my own Honour, by trusting to his; for he got me with Child and then forsook me: That very person has become a Magistrate and I had hopes he would have appeared this Day in my favor, however, my Undoer, has advanced in power in the very government that now punishes my misfortune. How can it be believed that Heaven is angry at my having children, when God has crowned them with immortal souls? Please consider the growing number of Batchelors who leave unproduced (which is little better than Murder) of their posterity to the next generation? Is not this a greater Offence than mine? Compel them either to Marry or pay double the Fine of Fornication every year. Why must poor young Women be disgraced when the great Command of Nature’s God is to Increase and Multiply? In my humble Opinion, instead of Whipping me, a Statue should be erected to my Memory.” The foregoing hoax by Franklin was widely reprinted as actual fact. Public response was overwhelmingly in Polly’s favor, except for the bachelors.

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER

Hot tub leaves her cold Q: My husband wants to fool around in the hot tub. I always have the feeling that the neighbors are looking through the holes in the fence, even if it’s at night. He calls me a prude. How can I convince him to leave me alone about this, or should I give in? A: I agree with you that if your heart is not in it, you shouldn’t have to do it. But there may be another solution. Without discussing it with your husband or your neighbors or anybody else, why not try to make the hot tub as private as possible. Cover up those holes, or make the fence higher. Plant some bushes around the hot tub, or move it someplace more secluded. If you can create an environment where you’ll feel safe, then you and your husband can enjoy fooling around without having to worry about being watched. But don’t let him call you a prude just because there is something he likes that you don’t. Q: I found your answer to a recent letter to be appalling. The letter was from a woman who said she was sending signals to a man

but he was not getting it. You said the man is probably homosexual. Did it ever cross your mind that the man may be shy? As a psychologist you should know how devastating shyness can be, especially in relationships with the opposite sex. The anxiety that goes along with shy men in relationships is a bigger handicap than having two heads! The man in question is probably painfully shy, and with a lifetime of being shot down might be afraid to make a move. Does this sound possible? You owe us painfully shy but straight guys an apology. A: I do hear of many cases where the reason that the man does not respond is because he is homosexual, even if he does not realize it yet, but I also must stand corrected, because extreme shyness could also be the cause. Now that you’ve pointed this condition out, I must tell you, and all those other painfully shy people out there, that there are ways for you to overcome this. There are behavioral therapists who specialize in this area and who can help overcome shyness through a series of exercises. This does not involve psychotherapy, where you must delve into your past to discover what caused the shyness to develop, but rather is a quicker way that often leads to very good results. Having taken the step to write to me on behalf of the paintfully shy, I now say that you have an obligation to make an appointment with such a therapist in order to help yourself. There is no reason to continue to suffer when help is available.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society South Florida Chapter recently hosted its Aventura MS Walk at Founders Park South. Close to 500 participants enjoyed breakfast compliments of The Original Pancake House, laced up their sneakers and warmed-up with a session led by Equinox Fitness Club prior to participating in the annual event, raising more than $50,000 to help find a cure for multiple sclerosis. Foods that fool ‘ya BY BARI AUERBACH At the grocery store you’re on a mission to fill your cart with only healthful foods, drinks and snacks – so you choose yogurt covered raisins, Vitamin Water, and granola – but guess what? You’re about to sabotage your diet! A handful of yogurt raisins has about as much saturated fat as two BK burgers; the Vitamin Water has eight grams of sugar; and if you have two cups of granola cereal – that’s a whopping 660 calories and 51 grams of sugar (12 teaspoons). On an episode of “Good Morning America,” nutrition expert Joy Bauer explained that when it comes to losing weight, cutting back on calories is critical – so it can be infuriating when you’re fooled by a food that sounds diet friendly but is actually loaded with calories, sugar, and fat! Here’s a rundown on some of the popular offenders Bauer calls “foods that fool”... 2% Reduced-Fat Milk: It’s not that lowfat/low-calorie when you consider that whole milk is 3.3% fat. Solution: Switch from 2% reduced-fat milk to skim milk and assuming you have one serving each day - at the end of the year, you’ll

save more than 14,000 calories and drop four pounds! Chicken Caesar Salads: Thanks to excessive dressing, croutons, and cheese, a standard chicken Caesar salad can total 1,130 calories and add more than 90 grams of fat to your diet! Solution: Request NO dressing (you’ll save up to 475 calories) and lose the croutons (another 70 calorie savings). Instead, toss with 1-2 teaspoons olive oil and balsamic vinegar. This lighter version is about 685 calories - for a savings of 445 calories. Dried Fruit: All fruit is packed with nutrition; however, dried fruit is significantly higher in calories than fresh fruit when you calculate comparable amounts. That’s because you’re taking out all the moisture leaving a small piece of concentrated sugar. Solution: If you’re watching your weight, eat fresh fruit. You’ll get much more volume and satisfaction. Fruit Smoothies: One 24-ounce smoothie provides about 450 calories. That’s the same amount of calories in 10-12 doughnut holes! Solution: Save fruit smoothies for occasional indulgences or make less caloric homemade versions using 1-2 servings fruit, ? cup skim milk,

April 1 - 7, 2009

and ? non-fat flavored yogurt. Coffee & Tea Drinks: Some can be astronomically high in calories depending on the ingredients and size of the drink...There are some with more than 1,000 calories for 16 ounces. At Starbucks, grande Iced Berry Chai Infusion has 46 g. sugar/ 51g. carbs and all those grande “skinny” Vanilla Lattes with 28 g. sugar/30 g. carbs could be why you’re not losing those last 10 pounds. Soups: Broth soups are great, but cream or milk-based soups can be fairly high in fat, with more than 300 calories for 8-12 ounces. “Organic”: Just because you may be shopping at Whole Foods Market doesn’t mean you still don’t have to check nutrition content. It may be nice to think all those tantalizing prepared foods in the cases are “perfectly healthy” – but the pasta with cheese in that creamy sauce still has fat and calories...so don’t let the organic label fool ‘ya!

Vitamin Water has as much as 8 grams of sugar.

Onion surprise BY PATRICIA C. FRANK The outside of an onion appears smooth and round. There is nothing on the outside to indicate the complexity that lies within. The inside is a complete surprise. When you cut the onion or peel it, it reveals a series of concentric, intricately woven, interlocking rings and layers. Outside, it appears plain and simple. Inside it is a well-designed work of art. When you open the onion and reveal its core, it triggers a physical response. It usually makes your cry. In some ways, you are like an onion. You appear to be one way on the outside but when you are opened up, you are full of surprises. Your true personality is revealed, with all of its intricacies and complexities. As you grow, throughout your life, you keep adding more and more layers just like an onion. Beneath all the layers, the onion has a very dense core. As you peel back your own layers, you come to your own core. It is your essence and the heart of your being. There are strong emotions that are buried in your core. When you expose them you become open and vulnerable. This can be very threatening. All forms of

self-discovery can be intimidating. When you peel back the layers of your life it may make you cry just like the onion makes you cry when it is exposed. One of the reasons you might not want to peel back your layers and get to your core is the same reason you don’t like to open an onion. You don’t want to cry or feel badly. You might be afraid that that if your insides and true personality are revealed you will be rejected by others. You might be afraid that you will reject yourself. Self-loathing is a major deterrent to self-acceptance and happiness. On the other hand, remember that people do not stop eating onions just because they make them cry. You should not stop peeling your own layers just because it makes you cry. You may be surprised and delighted by what you find. You might be tempted to leave the outer skin intact to protect you from what is inside. But, if you never peel your onion, you will never know what is inside. You will miss the opportunity to discover your own inner truth. If you never look inside yourself you will never see your core and the beauty that lies within. Attorney Mark J. Lynn opens independent law firm BY LYNN CARROLL LC: You recently opened a new law office. What's your area of expertise? ML: I'm a transactional attorney who has been practicing for more than 11 years. I have a great deal of experience in real estate transactions, both commercial and residential, as well as corporate formation and organization and other business transactions. LC: What do you mean by "business transactions"? ML: Generally, business transactions are the purchase and sale of businesses, as well as negotiating a wide range of agreements, including contracts for dealers, delivery systems, equipment leases, property management and technology. LC: Isn't this a risky time to open a transactional law firm? ML: I believe that opening a law firm is much like opening any other business, and to succeed in any business you need to be optimistic and proactive in spite of the circumstances. I honestly think that this is a very interesting and exciting time to be in the transactional area, because the upside potential is huge. LC: Where do you see your initial business coming from?

PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE ML: I have several loyal clients who I have worked with for years, and who have remained active. Also, interest rates are very low and the federal government is injecting billions of dollars into helping homeowners who are struggling to make their mortgage payments. I can work with people and their lenders in refinancing and modifying their loans and provide great value there. LC: Have you been in the area long? What's your involvement with the community? ML: I was raised in Plantation, and except for attending the University of Pennsylvania I've always lived in South Florida. I resided in Aventura for several years and have a lot of family here. I'm a member of the Real Property Trust & Probate Section of the Florida Bar, and I'm on the board of directors of the Southeast Florida section of American Red Magen David of Israel. I also helped form and served as general counsel for a not-for-profit organization in Miami.

Visiting Angels can help you care for your loved one BY LYNN CARROLL In a perfect world, you and your family would be able to take care of aging parents at home. But the reality is that caring for an aging or ill parent is a full-time job that can take a toll on the caregiver; and for many of these seniors, the skilled care provided in a nursing home is not a viable option. That's where Visiting Angels comes in. Visiting Angels is a nationwide franchised network of independently owned and operated non-medical senior homecare agencies helping older adults continue to live in their own homes by providing caring, experienced Michelle Kain and Jay home caregivers up to 24 Visiting Angels hours a day. "We place only experienced caregivers who pass a rigorous screening process," says Michelle Kain, owner/director of the local Visiting Angels office. "Many of them have grown tired of the Medicare model taking over healthcare and appreciate the opportunity to do one-on-one personal care." The staff at Visiting Angels works with each family to develop an individualized program to manage the daily needs of the client.

Those needs are then matched to the best possible caregiver and the family has the final say in the selection process. After the caregiver has been placed in the home, Visiting Angels continues its personalized contact through telephone check-in and home visits. "We build relationships with families," says Kain. In addition to offering assistance with hygiene, medication reminders and companionship, Visiting Angels caregivers also perform light housekeeping tasks, run errands, prepare meals and do shopping providing a respite in many ways for families dealing with the care of a loved one. "Often, the children of our clients live in another state and Valinsky, principals, cannot be physically present to check on them, " Kain says. "We provide the peace of mind they need and the quality care their parents deserve, all within the safe and secure surroundings of their own home." For additional information on the local office of Visiting Angels, serving Broward and North Miami-Dade, visit BrowardCaregivers.com or call 954-5278888 (toll free 888-527-8882).

Are we now in the ‘eye’ of the economic storm?

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY

Having been blown out of my house by Hurricane Andrew and seeing much of my 401K savings blown away by our current financial storm, I tend to look at this recession like a massive dark cloud raining down on all of us. So when I think I’m seeing the first possible sign of clearing skies, I think of it as if we’re now in the eye of the storm. Remember, when the storm’s eye passes over, there’s a temporary lull in the winds and it looks like it’s clearing nicely. But then you are hit by the backside of the storm and you have more bad weather before the whole thing finally blows away. I’ve covered storms where the winds on one side of the eye blow down a fence and it gets picked up and blown down in the opposite direction when the winds change as the eye passes overhead. So what does this have to do with mid-March

Economics? Plenty. Because I believe we’re in the eye of the financial storm right now. During the next few months, unemployment will peak at more than 10 percent. Corporate profits will remain soft and all the economic indicators that have plummeted throughout the recession will basically bottom out. Our economy will look like there is no end in sight to our economic downturn. However, this will happen right along with growing signs that the trillion-dollar economic stimulus plan enacted last fall by the Bush administration and continued by President Obama is finally working. Hundreds of billions of dollars are starting to kick-start the economy, as it was intended. New “foreclosure prevention” programs are starting to hit the market aimed at keeping homeowners from losing their homes. Massive public works projects soon will start putting American workers back into the workforce. And Wall Street is paying attention. Analysts say the stock market anticipates the U.S. economy by about six to nine months. When the stock markets goes up or down, it’s because investors are either “Bullish” on growth or “Bearish” in concerns over possible losses. Watch Al Sunshine’s “4 Your Money” reports weekdays on CBS4 news beginning at noon.
