Historically Yours BY BOB DIAMOND THE SAD ELECTION OF 1872 - TWO UNFIT MEN A noted historian said of the presidential election of 1872; “Never in American history have two more unfit men been offered to the country for the highest office.” The incumbent was Republican Ulysses S. Grant, whose administration was filled with scandals and corruption, resulting in a splinter opposition group – the Liberal Republicans, who endorsed Horace Greeley, the veteran editor of the New York Tribune. The Democrats were in such disarray that they offered no candidate. Instead, at their convention, the delegates endorsed Greeley, who turned out to be a terrible candidate He immediately angered his Democratic supporters with his new campaign slogan, “Turn the rascals out,” because he once said, “All Democrats may not be rascals, but all rascals are Democrats.” As a newspaperman, Greeley had previously taken positive positions in editorials on a mixture of issues that were unpopular, including prohibition, spiritualism, socialism and labor unions. Because he
had also attacked the evils of Civil War Reconstruction, the Republicans charged Greeley with being in favor of lynch mobs, the Ku Klux Klan and a puppet to Boss Tweed. Republican Cartoonist Thomas Nast had a field day belittling Greeley’s “clownish appearance” with his “baby-pink face and fuzzy chin whiskers.” Crowds ridiculed Greeley wherever he went, whereas Grant remained aloof, rarely spoke and allowed campaign aides to explain away the terrible scandals of his administration. Greeley was pilloried so viciously that he folded under pressure, became depressed, stating later that he didn’t know whether he was running for the presidency or the penitentiary. Personal tragedy compounded his campaign. Greeley was advised that his wife was extremely ill. He rushed to her bedside and remained with her for several weeks until she passed away a few days prior to the election. The loss of his beloved wife, his massive presidential election defeat to Grant at the polls, his disgust with politics and his loss of his editorial post at the Tribune crushed him. He physically broke down, his mind snapped and he died only several weeks after the election but before the electoral votes were cast. As a result, Greeley received no electoral votes.

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER
Is she too bland? Q: My wife and I have been married for many years. Throughout our marriage, I’ve been the one who has suggested sexual activities. She has never refused me, not has she ever been indifferent to the suggestion. But if I did not make the first move, we would go on indefinitely without sex. I accept her attitude toward sex on the basis of the old saying, “woman are different.” However, since the sexual revolution I’ve learned that women are not as different as I’d thought. I asked my wife why she has never taken the first step toward having sex. She said she was sorry for being bland but gave no explanation. her doctor dismissed her question about it by telling her that it probably has to do with her age. Besides seeing a therapist, do you have any suggestions/ A: You say that if it were up to your wife you’d never have sex, but one reason that your wife doesn’t initiate sex might be that you’re not giving her a chance. If you want sex every three or four days, for example, and she only needs it once a week, her natural arousal level might never get high enough to kick in because your
interrupt it. Now there’s nothing necessarily wrong with that, as long as you are both having enjoyable sex, which you say you are. So, while it might be true that you would enjoy it if you wife initiated sex once in a while, don’t make it such a big issue that you endanger your entire relationship. Since she does respond positively when you initiate sex, be grateful for that. I’m not saying that you have to accept this condition. That you talked about it and she spoke to her doctor is fine. And there wouLd be nothing wrong with seeing a sex therapist, too. My point is, if it turns out that your wife’s libido is not as strong as yours, rather than label her bland, or anything else, just keeping doing your part to maintain your sex life. Q: We have been married for 20 years and have a wonderful sex life. We are always looking for exciting new ways to please each other. We are interested in visiting sites on the internet but are concerned about what we might find if we start looking at adult sites. Are there any “safe” adult sites you can suggest that might give us some ideas? We are more interested in words than in pictures. A: I’m afraid I’m not an expert on adult web sites, but I might recommend that you go to www.about.com. On this site there are experts “guides” who can tell you about sites within their expertise. If you look at the pages on sex in about-com, you’ll at least get descriptions that might help you to locate sites you would like to visit, as well as sites to stay away from that you might offensive. Just realize that you still might stumble on some sites that depict more sex than you want, but if you do, just click off of them as soon as you realize it.

According to Forbes.com, whether originally inspired by those skimpy togas or the buff gods of their myths, the traditional Greek diet is still one of the healthiest ways to eat and now THIRA restaurant in Hallandale Beach can do all the cooking for you! THIRA "Taste of the Greek Islands" recently hosted a networking luncheon giving Aventura Young Professionals the opportunity to discover that beyond "delicious and nutritious" - studies show a Mediterranean diet can increase longevity, protect against heart disease and even lower the risk of some cancers. AYP Chair Michael Yavner of Northern Trust and THIRA's hospitable staff welcomed a great turnout of under-45 entrepreneurs especially concerned with the challenge of maintaining sound diet and fitness plans despite busy work schedules. Leaders from Williams Island POA, Shred Trust, Florida's Blood Centers and Aventura Worldwide Transportation learned the Greek diet emphasizes vegetables, whole grains, fruit, beans, nuts and fish - deriving up to 40% of total daily calories from olive oil and other healthy fats. Colleagues from Andrew Goldstein Photography, BankUnited, American Impact Media, Hadassah, DSXpress, the Florida Breast Cancer Coalition and attorney Eric Miller were also happy to hear the diet provides a more balanced approach than those banishing carbohydrates. Friends from BNY Mellon, Melnick, Lilienfeld & Castonguay CPA's, Stern Bloom Media, Florida Marlins, Dolphin Stadium and Hard Rock CafĂŠ Miami concurred THIRA menu items like Greek salads, vegetarian pitas, snapper, grilled shrimp, sea bass, grilled calamari, salmon and braised lamb served with steamed wild greens would make it easy to stay on the Greek diet! Teams from the Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort, RBC Bank, The Credit Council, I Financial Partners and Voices For Children were also looking forward to better beach bodies thanks to THIRA specialties like "Briam" - roasted, mixed vegetables in a light tomato sauce; "Melitzanosalata" - grilled eggplant spread with garlic, olive oil, red peppers and tomatoes; and "Dolmadakia" - grape leaves stuffed with rice and herbs. Power lunch lovers from Mo's Bagels,
Welcome/Bienvenidos Visitors Magazine, Anti-Defamation League, Coane & Associates, Salon Serenity, GBS Beauty Store, The Victory School, Fabian Realty and attorney Mark J. Lynn really liked that the only "Big Fat Greek" thing about THIRA is the value of lunch specials served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting at just $4.95 - plus elaborate sunset menus offered from 3-6 p.m. Everyone from Double Tree Ocean Point Resort & Spa, Seo4anyone.com, Banyan Life Financial, and the Office of Dr. Richard Galitz were also happy to hear that Happy Hours feature specials like two-for-one cocktails from 27 p.m. every day at the bar, and other periodic specials like complimentary bottles of wine on Mondays per 4 entrees, or 2 for 1 appetizers at the bar all day Tuesdays. Before the luncheon concluded, THIRA proved it's no Greek myth you'd gladly stay on the Mediterranean diet for life! And since exercise is an important part of staying in shape, AYP members from Nature's Best, Minuteman Press, Globalinx, Ameriprise Financial and Suburban Associates planned to dance the night away at THIRA's upcoming "Greek Night" event. On April 19th, THIRA is inviting the community to a fun evening starting at 10 p.m. featuring DJ Niko. For more information about THIRA's take-out menu or catering for private functions, phone: 954-454-9676 or visit thirarestaurant.com. Everyone recognizes the importance of good health. A favorite wish is for health and happiness. Everyone says, “If you have your health, you have everything.” That implies that with good health you can accomplish anything you desire and you can have anything and everything you want. You can live a happy, healthy, carefree life. Health is the absence of disease. There is a school of thought that links your mental, emotional and psychological states to your physical state. These theories believe that your negative thought patterns create dis-ease in your body. There are books that explain the thoughts behind most diseases. For instance, pain is often linked to guilt about something and pain is the punishment for your guilty thoughts and feelings. If you cannot find the exact explanation for your situation sit quietly and ask your self, “What is my body telling me?” There are basically two mental patterns of thought and feelings that contribute to disease and they are fear and anger in all their forms. Every individual has their own
unique response to their life experiences. Listen to your thoughts and words and notice the frequency and the patterns you express. Over time one thought will lead to another and eventually the pattern will become clear to you. Many people are startled to learn that they harbor thoughts and feelings that are causing discomfort in some form in their body. There is also the belief that your experiences are the result of your need for that situation or condition. The dis-ease serves a purpose in your life. Does it bring you more love and attention? Does it prevent you from doing something you do not wish to do? Does it let you rest? Does it help you cope? When you discover the reason for it you can begin to eliminate it and satisfy that need in a healthier way. Your life experiences are influenced by your beliefs. Your beliefs when examined in adulthood can be changed. Right now, this very moment, you can begin to think loving, healthy thoughts. You can begin your journey to a healthy and harmonious life. See yourself as whole and perfect. Think and talk health and it will be so. Until next time – Take care. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212 308-0309.

Are Your Property Taxes Paid? Your property is one of your most valuable assets and the Miami-Dade County Tax Collector’s Office wants to help you understand the consequences of not paying your property taxes. Please realize the failure to pay your property taxes will result in a lien being placed on your property and additional charges and interest will be applied to your tax bill. · Property taxes became delinquent on April 1st. · If your taxes remain unpaid on June 1st, your taxes will be sold at auction as a tax certificate and a lien will be assessed on your property. · When a certificate is sold on your property, the buyer of the certificate pays the taxes you owe and earns interest, which you will have to pay in addition to the taxes you owe. · If your taxes remain unpaid for a period of two years after a certificate has been issued on your property, you could lose your property. Please remember, if you are the current property owner, it is your responsibility to ensure your property taxes are paid. To avoid additional charges and interest, and the potential risk of losing your property, the Miami-Dade County Tax Collector’s Office wants to remind you that your payment must be in our office by May 31, 2009. Postmarks will not be honored for delinquent taxes. Taxes must be paid by cashier’s check, money order or certified funds. Continuing Care Retirement Communities:
A more secure investment in an uncertain economy BY MARK BEGGS, Executive Director Classic Residence by Hyatt in Aventura While the current economic situation affects all Americans, perhaps those most impacted by today’s uncertainty are older adults who want to preserve a lifetime of earnings, a desire that is driven both by the state of the economy and the rising cost of care. Fortunately, there are senior living options that can help older adults safeguard their financial future and ensure that quality care is available when they need it for as long as they need it. Finding Greater Peace of Mind in a Volatile Economy Many older adults share a desire to maintain independence, live comfortably and possibly leave a legacy for loved ones. More than ever before, numerous community and senior living options are available that offer extra financial peace of mind without compromising lifestyle. One such option is a continuing care retirement community (CCRC). Broadly, CCRCs offer older adults an exciting lifestyle now and greater peace of mind for the future. The type of continuing care program offered can differ: Type A includes a choice of residence, a host of services and amenities, and full access to an on-site care center; Type B presents services from independent living to nursing home care, with a limited number of days of care included. Type C requires residents to pay a market rate for all care services. A Type A CCRC is a choice people can make now with confidence about their financial future. That’s because this comprehensive life care program is designed to help protect older adults against the rising costs of long-term care. Luxury senior living communities like Classic Residence by Hyatt in Aventura have led the charge by offering a refund program that returns a portion of the initial entrance fee to residents or their estates. Not only do residents benefit from the engaging lifestyle and the opportunity to meet new friends without the concerns of home maintenance, they also reap the benefits of quality care in an on-site care center with special emphasis on assisted living needs, memory support, or skilled nursing care, in private accommodations in a beautifully appointed setting. All, combined with a partial return of the entrance fee, enables older adults to plan
their futures with greater certainty. Older Adults: Know Your Options When researching a move to a CCRC, there are several things to consider that help ensure you find the best community to fit your current and future lifestyle needs. Explore your choices early. There are often wait lists for communities, especially in retirement hotspots such as South Florida. Similarly, rising costs and refund stipulations are prevalent at many communities—be sure to ask for copies of contracts and other legal materials so you can take your time to review. Also, make certain the company behind the community is established and will be able to care for residents in the future. There is an abundance of information available on CCRCs; talk to your doctor and financial planners to see which options best suit you. Visit the communities that interest you. If you’re considering living there, take the time to experience what daily life is like. What does the community look like? What types of activities and amenities do they offer residents? Are the features and opportunities available important to you? Get a feel for who your neighbors are going to be. Ask about continuing care options. Will you have access to an on-site care center? If so, what are the care options available to you – assisted living, memory support, skilled nursing? Many times, care costs are discussed only when they’re actually needed and can be quite surprising. Be sure to understand the terms of care services. Unexpected costs can add up quickly. Bring someone who is interested in your well-being as a second pair of eyes and ears. Investigating your next move can be daunting, especially if that move takes you to the community where you will be enjoying the freedom of life and new experiences. A family member or close friend brings an alternative perspective and can ask questions you may not think of. Mark Beggs is the Executive Director of Classic Residence by Hyatt in Aventura, a Type A continuing care retirement community, located at 19333 W. Country Club Drive in Aventura, Fla. Call (305) 6924501 to schedule a tour of the community or visit www.hyattclassic.com. Classic Residence by Hyatt is the premiere provider of luxury senior living communities in South Florida.

Aventura Mall hosts fashion show benefiting Florida Breast Cancer Coalition Research Foundation Aventura Mall recently hosted a VIP fashion show in the newly opened Nordstrom Court benefiting Florida Breast Cancer Coalition Research Foundation (FBCCRF). The event was a success, attracting fashion enthusiasts, breast cancer supporters, advocates and survivors. "We are very grateful for Aventura Mall and all of the designers who made this great event possible," said FBCCRF CEO James Konschnik. "This event meant so much to the foundation and helped us introduce what we are all about: breast cancer research and education in Florida." The exclusive fashion show was presented by Aventura Mall, with well known brands including Astoria, Bag & Baggage, Chico's, Hello Kitty by Victoria Couture, Damain, Adolfo Dominguez, AG Adriano Goldschmeid, Intimacy, Lily Pulitzer, and Lounge, all participating to help raise awareness for FBCCRF. Over 400 Florida Breast Cancer Coalition Research Foundation supporters enjoyed VIP front-row seating and helped
to raise the needed funds through a raffle for FBCCRF. "I think it's great that the fashion show supports both a good cause and a community organization," said Gerry Hudson, an FBCCRF supporter who brought both of her daughters to the event. "This is a fun way for me to teach my girls about the importance of being educated about breast cancer." FBCCRF is a 501(c)3 grassroots notfor-profit organization with the mission to end breast cancer through education, advocacy and research. FBCCRF works statewide to raise awareness and mobilize Floridians to ensure sufficient public funding for breast cancer research, quality healthcare for all without fear of discrimination and an environment free of carcinogens and is the only organization in the State of Florida with the end breast cancer license plate. All monies raised stays in the State of Florida to support advocacy, education, and research programs for Florida residents. For more information, visit floridabreastcancer.org
