After 25 years with the Miami-Dade Police Dept., from covering Vice, Intelligence and Narcotics to the Robbery Bureau, Barry Mankes has retired-for the third and final time. “My most gratifying assignment was a Police Instructor at the Metropolitan Police Institute where I trained about 400 police trainees… many of those 'blue shirts' today are in investigative and supervisory positions throughout the Department.” Mankes also served two years as president of the Shomrim Society of South Florida, bringing it to its greatest heights in terms of membership, community involvement and charita-
ble outreach. An evening of singing, impersonations and awards left everyone with great memories of a dedicated professional who always went ‘above and beyond’ to help others. “As I move to another stage in my life,” said Mankes, "I say I have lived by simple rules and philosophies. My mantra has always been, “Doing the impossible… just takes longer.”

Aventura-based developer Fernando Levy Hara wins project award from Harvard Fernando Levy Hara of G&D Developers (second from left) celebrates Harvard win with fellow team members
BY LYNN CARROLL
Fernando Levy Hara of Aventura’s G&D Developers, 20900 NE 30th Avenue, is winner of a Design Project Award at Harvard University. The project was proposed by a fivemember team as part of the graduate student class in real estate development, Levy Hara says. The target city for project development was New Bedford, MA. The project was a requirement in the Advanced Management Development Program in Real Estate, an executive MBA program he’s been attending for the past year and a half at the Ivy League university. Each year, no more than 20 candidates from around the world, all with more than 20 years experience as real estate developers, are chosen to participate. “We attend classes for 15 days every two-and-a-half months,” he says, “putting in very intensive 10-hour days.” Levy Hara, who earned his undergraduate degree in his native Argentina, says the class was divided into five-member teams that were given six months to develop comprehensive redevelopment plans for one of two New Bedford sites. His team’s plan, which involves the redevelopment of an old armory in a blighted area into a facility to refurbish mahogany boats and provide onsite training, was cho-

Next July, after the class graduates, Levy Hara's team will return to New Bedford to help launch the proposed development in partnership with the city. “Federal and state economic-recovery money will be used to make it happen,” he says. The international contacts made at Harvard are also paying off.
“I've already started a joint venture in Miami called McKafka Group,” Levy Hara says, “with an Austrian developer who has a construction company in Prague.” For information, call 305-466-4243.

A grant from the Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs will again provide a group of youngsters with disabilities to have a summer camp experience. This summer's program is entitled “A Vision of Art.” The Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs is a major sponsor of
grants that emphasize inclusion of persons of all abilities. Over the past 15 summers, research on the summer intensive pediatric program has shown cognitive, physical and emotional benefits for its participants, says Dr. Marie A. DiCowden, a nationally known healthcare psychologist and founder and program director for the Biscayne Institutes of Health & Living, a HealthCare Community program. “This workshop has been nationally recognized for its success,” Dr. DiCowden says. “Previous results of outcome research have shown children participating make significant cognitive, behavioral and emotional changes that increase their ability to function in the community.” The grant will support ten full scholarships for students with disabilities between the ages of six and 22. Dr. DiCowden says all workshop participants get daily rehabil-
itation services at Biscayne Institutes. Their disabilities include traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, congenital neurological disorders, strokes, learning disorders and hemi-paralysis. The workshop will run June 21st through July 28th.Dr. Teri DeGrand, psychologist and summer program director, will work with Elaine Defibaugh, a well known artist in the Miami area who has developed a reputation for using arts as a means of helping heal individuals with medical problems. Assisting her will be Karen Rutman, community artist, art history teacher and social worker. Dr. DiCowden serves as psychologist and trainer for multiple health professions including art therapy clinicians. Camp activities will include learning and using the basic visual arts techniques of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpting and photography. Biscayne Academy participates in multiple
grant programs as well as the Florida Scholarship Opportunity program, and accepts John McKay scholarships for children with varying exceptionalities and disabilities. For information, call 305-932-8994 or go online at biscayneinstitutes.org.

‘Mother’s Day the Aventura Way’
Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY This Mother’s Day, what do you get for the Aventura mom who has everything? Here are some good suggestions… Mother’s Day Lunch: If you want to take your mom out to lunch in Aventura to show her how much you love her in a really big way, the Cheesecake Factory would be a good place to go since one portion size is almost big enough for the Octomom and all of her kids! Mother’s Day Shopping Spree: If you really want to be a “mothers helper,” take her to the Aventura Mall and let her pick out her own gift so she won’t have to go to the trouble of exchanging whatever you get her for something that fits (she knows it’s the thought that counts!) Mother’s Day Flowers: You could spend a
lot to buy mom roses, but since Aventura already has such an abundance of beautiful landscaping, probably no one would notice if you picked some flowers from the medians to make a Mother’s Day bouquet…just add in a nice card and ask a friend to make the delivery! Mother’s Day Chocolate: Calorie conscious moms who get lots of Godiva chocolate would especially appreciate a complimentary guest pass to the Equinox fitness club – or a fashionable pair of new sneakers for running after all the kids! Mother’s Day Massage: For Aventura soccer moms, a gift certificate to Massage Envy would be a great way to express appreciation for all those pickups and drop offs…actually a limo driver from Aventura Worldwide Transportation Service would be an even better idea! Mother’s Day Photo: There’s nothing moms like more than photos of their kids and grandkids – but this year, you might want to consider giving her a portrait of members of the City Commission – after all, they’re the ones who help ensure every day feels like a holiday in Aventura!

You can be a Unicorn
Patricia C.Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING One of life's dilemmas is how to surmount perceived restraints, how to be free in an unfree world. How can you loosen the ties that bind you to certain situations in your life? The ties that bind may seem like the chain that holds an anchor but they could really be as light as a thin gold necklace. There is a famous poem that tells the story of the capture of the Unicorn. A Unicorn is a mythical animal that resembles a white horse that possesses a single, straight horn. His horn is believed to have magical qualities. This famous poem speaks of freedom. "Here sits the Unicorn...in captivity, yet free."... "He could shatter his prison wall, Could escape them all--If he rose, If he chose." ..."In captivity, Flank, hoofs and mane-- Yet look again--His horn is free."... "Here sits the Unicorn-- in captivity? In repose."..."Alive in his horn; Horizontally, In captivity; Perpendicularly, Free." ..."Here lives the Unicorn, in captivity, Free." There is an important message in this poem. It is a message that can set you free. Various things may hold you captive in
your life; dependent, co-dependent or dysfunctional relationships, addictions, financial constraints, and caregiving obligations. You may be the victim of erroneous beliefs, and incorrect and improper thoughts. A sense of duty, obligation and responsibility could also tie you to relationships that you think you have to maintain, regardless of whether they are healthy for you or not. If you have to stay and you cannot escape physically, keep in mind the qualities of the Unicorn and become a Unicorn yourself. You may be tethered but you can still choose to be free. There are various things you can do to feel free. The first one is to admit that it is a choice you have made. You have chosen this but you are always free to choose again and to choose something else. To do this you need to choose to think different thoughts about yourself and your circumstances. If you change your thoughts you will change your view and your perception of the ties that you think bind you. It takes strength to break out and break away but it also takes strength to stay. You can always circumvent your external and internal state of affairs. You can be a Unicorn. Your horn which is your spirit will always be free and it will always rise above the situations and conditions in your life. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. Pizza Fusion hosts ‘earth friendly’ networking event BY BARI AUERBACH
Just before Earth Day, Pizza Fusion hosted a networking luncheon for Aventura Young Professionals highlighting "delicious, gourmet pizza in its purest form" - untainted by artificial additives like preservatives, growth hormones, pesticides, nitrates and trans-fats. AYP Chair Michael Yavner of Northern Trust joined Pizza Fusion marketing manager Cesar Conde and general manager Mario Valenciano to welcome a great turnout of under-45 professionals to Pizza Fusion in North Miami Beach – famous for pizza plus a 75% organic menu featuring an eclectic array of gourmet sandwiches, salads, desserts, beer and wine. Leaders from Stern Bloom Media, Equinox, Fabian Realty, Courtyard by Marriott, Costco and Allstate had high praise for the Pizza Fusion mission to “uphold the highest level of integrity in all we do, from the quality and origin of our food to our care for the health of our customers and the environment.” Environmentally conscious colleagues from Nature's Best, ASAP Services, MultiLingua, ImageSound Americas, Circle of Lifesaving and Double Click Companies applauded Pizza Fusion's recent achievement-becoming the first restaurant in Miami to receive a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the United States Green Building Council.
Eric Mannis, Nature's Best; Dimitry Shaposhnikov, DS Xpress; Jason Katz, Circle of Lifesaving / Life Fitness
This marked the sixth LEED certification earned by the organic franchise founded in 2006 by Vaughan Lazar and Michael Gordon-both savvy businessmen with greenslanted enterprises. During the luncheon, gourmet pizza lovers from Key Parking Services, Fast Care, DS Xpress and Bloomgarden, Goudreau & Rosen discovered every Pizza Fusion pie is made with fresh, all-natural and organic ingredients - from the sauce and dough (you can order white, multi-grain or gluten-free crusts) - to delicious toppings like free-range chicken, bacon, portobello mushrooms, soy cheese and many more favorites. Friends from Velocity Processing, Fashion Factor, Aventura USA, Goldstein, Schecter, Koch and attorney Mark J. Lynn planned to come back to Pizza Fusion soon for great specials with a purchase of $25 or more like "Free Pizza Monday"; "Free Wine Tuesday"; "Kid's Night Wednesday" with free personal cheese pizzas; and "Dine with a Friend Thursday" when large specialty pizzas come with two glasses of free house beer, wine or soda. Financial experts from Sabadell United Bank, Melnick, Lilienfeld & Castonguay, CPA's, RBC Bank, JGB Bank, Ameriprise Financial, Edward Jones and Morgan Stanley had rave reviews for more great specials like "Pizza Mad Dash" Sunday through Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. when the price you pay is the same as the time of day for select personal pizzas. Plus during Happy Hour Sunday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. all appetizers, beer and glasses of house wine are half-price. All AYP parents were really happy to hear about the "Fusion Kids Club." The third Saturday of every month at 10 a.m. Pizza Fusion welcomes kids to learn about recycling, organic food and how to help the environment. Before the networking event was over, everyone looked forward to dining with family and friends at Pizza Fusion; getting fast deliveries from courteous drivers in eco-friendly cars carrying boxes inscribed with the slogan “Saving the Earth. One Pizza at a Time!” Then when Amy Stone of Williams Island POA won a Pizza Fusion gift certificate and attorney Eric J. Miller won a bottle of organic wine - every-

Get motivated and reach your goals!
BY DR. GREGG A. PIZZI
Have you ever had the best intentions of getting something done, such as going to the gym, finishing a project, or calling a long-time friend, only to find yourself unmotivated, too tired, or lacking the time? Have you ever find yourself, as a result of not accomplishing these things, becoming self-critical, or even feeling guilty? If so, have you ever wondered where these thoughts come from? Before turning to environmental factors such as our upbringing, family, our spouse/partner, or the expectations of society, we need to look inward and ask ourselves why it is that we have chosen to take on the objectives we set for ourselves. Why do I need to be a certain weight? Have a specific car? Look a certain way? When we don’t live up to the goals we have set for ourselves, guilt and self-criticism often result. For this reason, we need to set reasonable, clear goals. Summer is coming. Do you want to work harder in the gym to lose those
love handles you’ve grown so close to? Are you looking to reduce your credit card debt? Find a boyfriend/girlfriend? Is having a more exciting social life your goal? What makes us feel good about ourselves is not only the achievement of our goals, but the quality of our experience in working toward them. We largely have a choice as to whether that experience is a positive or a negative one. To use the gym example again, the guilt that results from avoiding working out and immersing ourselves in a pint of Ben & Jerry’s often has more to do with the fact that we know we are not taking steps toward our goal than about being ‘bad’ for eating ice cream. Explore ways to motivate yourself, such as changing your routine, starting new friendships, working out with a partner, or even changing jobs, to provide yourself that mental stimulation and get going. Since reaching one goal often only leads to the setting of the next, it’s important to have fun and feel good about yourself along the way! Dr. Gregg A. Pizzi is a licensed psychologist in Aventura and can be reached by phone at 1-888-377-4994 or online at www.DrPizzi.com.

Take Stock in Children was established in 1995 as a non-profit organization in Florida that provides a unique opportunity for low-income and at-risk students, many from minority families, to escape the cycle of poverty through education. The program offers students college scholarships, caring volunteer mentors and hope for a better life. Starting in middle school, and continuing into high school, the program also assists with the transition into college. Take Stock in Children has served over 16,000 children throughout 67 counties in Florida and has generated over 1,000,000 mentor volunteer hours with a current count of over 7,500 mentors. Founded in 1997, the Police Athletic League of North Miami strives to meet the needs of the youth through a variety of after school athletic and educational programs utilizing positive role models such as police officers, educators, and community volunteers in informal settings other

than the structured classroom environment. The program serves to provide a means and method for the exchange of ideas, experiences, and information regarding youth problems, their causes and treatment and to create methods and procedures necessary to develop a constructive program with the goal of helping to solve youth problems. Our partners are anticipating a crowd of 500-1000 people for this health event. We expect patrons from all over Dade and Broward County to come out and enjoy the day’s festivities which will feature various health and fitness vendors, the County Line Chiropractic Medical Team, sports and wellness games, interactive demonstrations, a stage for entertainment, food, and refreshments. The event will provide free health screenings and services for health care, including scoliosis and spinal checks, blood pressure, BMI (body mass index), and many more. Kids will be receiving free vitamin supplements and participating in many different events. The Expo will also entail interactive health and wellness demonstrations from the Police Athletic League, sports activities and entertainment provided by the North Miami Parks and Recreation Department, and other local entities. Additionally, raffle prizes will be drawn throughout the day.

Eat This... Drink That...
Sometimes ‘Oldies’ are Still ‘Goodies’ Shari Lynn Rothstein-Kramer
EAT THIS... DRINK THAT Every day a new restaurant comes “online”. We all rush out to find the new “it” place. In South Beach, we flock to Burger & Beer Joint, Jonathan Eismann’s new Fin and Q, The new and improved Forge; then we drive up to Fort Lauderdale to check out eateries like Via Luna in the Ritz-Carlton. We must go. It’s in our nature. We need to experience new and trendy, but then, when we are all done, we go back to the tried and true. And that is exactly what I did this weekend. I had relatives come to town (all the way from Boca) and they wanted to eat somewhere “local”. Being the Aventura girl that I am, I started going through my mental restaurant database and couldn’t think of anywhere I really wanted to go.
Then it hit me. Pilar. The restaurant has been here for years. I hadn’t been there in four years. What I remembered is that it was never been supertrendy or pretentious. It wasn’t over-priced or over crowded. Pilar was that fish place in a strip mall that always offered guests gracious service, reasonable prices, good food in a comfortable atmosphere. So we went on a Friday night at 8 p.m. Same warm reception from the hostess. Same comfy atmosphere. Same menu for the most part. The only difference - not as many people as I remembered. Oh well. No biggie. More attention for my guests and me. We sat, and within seconds our waitress, Rosie, appeared. Sweet, bubbly, and ready to serve, she let us know the specials, her favorites, and even what to avoid (which I totally appreciate). As we perused the menu, which was filled with perennial favorites at unheard of prices, we were all suddenly starving. And then the ordering frenzy began. I was silently hoping the food was as good as I remembered, because with the amount we were
about to order, it would be either feast or famine. Before really ordering, we had an order of the Flash Fried fresh Calamari sent to the table. Served with tomato and Siracha Aioli dipping sauces, the hearty portion was filled with tentacles as well as rings. Tasty, cooked well – all for $7. Appetizers were split: two of us nibbled on salad, the others ate food. I chose a Beefsteak Tomato Salad, Sliced Tomato, Balsamic Vinaigrette, Feta & Extra Virgin Olive Oil, $7. It was flavorful and the tomatoes firm, just the way I like them. My companion ordered the Baby Spinach Salad, Sweet Onion, Apple, Feta, Roasted Walnuts & Herbed Balsamic Vinaigrette, $6. It was good enough for me to think about licking the plate. Rounding out the appetizers were lovely Rock Shrimp Spring Rolls with Sweet Soy Reduction, $7 and Yellowfin Tuna Tartare, which was fresh and flavorful, $9. One might think we’d have had our fill, but…no. It was time for the main course. Two of us ordered the flounder special, which was lightly battered and sat atop
grilled veggies – delish! I love flounder and this brought back great memories of growing up in Long Island fishing with my dad. We tried the Scallops Sautéed Spinach with Roasted Corn, Citrus Butter and Shaved Fried Onions, $19. So tasty. Just as good as I remember them and finally, to balance out all of the fish, we had the Grilled Skirt Steak, Yukon Gold and Chorizo Hash, Poached Garlic Chimichurri, $16. The steak was a perfect medium rare, the chimichurri perfectly pungent and garlicky, and the hash was a nice compliment. The overall meal was lovely. But I was really blown away by the pricing. Most starters are approximately $7; main dishes at Pilar are about $19; the most expensive dish is a Skirt Steak at $29. Desserts are reasonable too. But the most wonderful thing about Pilar is that after all this time, it remains warm, inviting, and… unchanged Shari Lynn Rothstein has been writing about food, wine, lifestyles and fashion for more than 20 years, in New York and Florida. Talking to Lawyers: 101 By Michelle Estlund, Criminal Defense Attorney It may seem that a conversation with one’s attorney needs no special instruction, but some preparation for that conversation is usually in order, and we are an unusual bunch. Clients have very specific reasons for contacting attorneys, whether it is for initial hiring purposes, or later for a case update. Either way, it is worth the few minutes it takes to get focused on the meeting and prepare some notes. When preparing, keep in mind a few things about speaking with attorneys. First, attorneys are objective-driven, and will likely hone in on legal issues, factual determination, and overall case analysis. Even though many legal matters are emotionally involved for clients, and the attorney may be sympathetic, the client’s money and time with a lawyer are best spent focusing on facts and legal questions rather than the emotional issues. Take notes while you are there, so that if you do become upset, you can remember the conversation when you are home and calmer. Second, understand that there is a reason for seemingly prying, nosy questions. Most of us
are information-seekers by nature, and we can have an aggressive style of gaining information out of sheer habit. In our efforts to obtain information and reach a goal, attorneys sometimes communicate differently from others. Also, we know that every person who walks in the door is not necessarily going to hire us. Some people need only a consultation; others will consult with several attorneys before deciding on representation; still others need representation for a limited or specific matter on a case. If the client is honest about his or her legal needs, the attorney is better able to tailor the discussion to suit the client’s needs. A meeting is much more efficient if the attorney knows exactly what the client needs and is able to either meet that need or offer other options. Finally, we don’t like surprises in our cases. The sooner we have information, the better. The worst thing to do is to save bad information until later in the case, when a defense has been built, or a resolution has been proposed, or a strategy has been set in place. The more informed we are, the better able to help resolve a legal matter we will be.

Abused, neglected children in Miami-Dade underserved BY ROBERT HAMILTON
There are approximately 2,600 children in Miami-Dade County who have been so abused and neglected that they have been removed from their homes and placed into foster care. Their fate will be decided in dependency court proceedings, where everyone is represented by an attorney — everyone except the children. The solution for that problem, according to Nelson F. Hincapie, president and CEO of Voices For Children Foundation, is to make sure every child is assigned a Guardian Ad Litem by the court. Guardians Ad Litem are trained volunteers whose role is to make sure children are not lost in an overburdened legal and social service system or languish in an inappropriate home or shelter. The Guardian gathers information through regular visits with the child and interviews with others, attends hearings on the child’s behalf, and makes recommendations to the judge. Currently, about 85 percent of MiamiDade’s foster care children are represented, which means that 15 percent, or some 390 children, do not have a voice in court. The non-profit Voices For Children Foundation is making a push during April, which is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, to encourage concerned citizens in Miami-Dade County to help rectify this situation. “Anyone can help these children in

need,” Hincapie said. “If they can donate time, volunteers are needed to protect and represent the best interests of these children. If they can donate money, we can provide funding to the Guardian Ad Litem program to ensure every child’s right to a safe and permanent home is protected. “Fifteen percent still are not represented by a Guardian Ad Litem — that’s too high a number. We believe every child in foster care should be represented; every child should have a chance for a happy and stable future.” The State of Florida requires that the interests of every abused, abandoned and neglected child be represented by a Guardian Ad Litem. However, the Guardian Ad Litem program does not receive adequate public funding. That’s where Voices For Children helps. Voices For Children Foundation was created to help fill the gap by providing funding and support to Miami-Dade County’s Guardian Ad Litem program. The nationally respected 11th Judicial Circuit Guardian Ad Litem program is the largest in Florida, serving one of the largest urban populations of child abuse, abandonment, and neglect in the country. Miami-Dade residents who want to help these abused, neglected or abandoned children can volunteer their time, or contribute to Voices For Children. More information is available at the Voices For Children Foundation website at <www.voices4.org> or by calling 305-324-5678.

Honda Accord Crosstour a different kind of CUV Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS
The 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour is a different looking vehicle and people either love it or hate it, with very little middle ground. The Crosstour is a Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) based on the Accord platform, but it doesn’t look anything like its sibling. It’s a premium sedan with the versatility of an SUV. It has an aerodynamic shape with a sloping roofline and a low profile. The exterior styling builds on the Accord design and adds a bolder front grille, wedgeshaped D-pillars and an aggressive rear end, with the roofline narrow into the tail to hide a unique cargo area capable of holding large items and gear. The sculpted beltline starts at the front fenders flows into an outward character line at the rear fenders. On the inside, the Crosstour is luxurious and versatile, with under-floor storage and reversible cargo-area floor panels for hauling dirty loads. The inset sculpting of the instru-
ment panel and the wide center console make the cabin feel bigger. Controls for the audio, climate and navigation system are intuitively grouped and easy to operate. Double-stitching on leather surfaces, plush floor carpeting and features such as the rear ventilation outlets built into the center console add to the luxury of the vehicle. An oversize tailgate and a low access height allow for easy loading or unloading of groceries or cargo. Crosstour has a unit-body construction with a double-wishbone front and a multilink rear suspension. Under the hood there’s a 271-hp i-VTEC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) for better power management and fuel efficiency. A technologically advanced five-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment. New technology in the transmission includes enhanced gear holding capability and a more sophisticated downshift capability that more closely matches engine revolutions for smoother transitions to lower gears. Six inches of ground clearance and optional Real Time 4WD drive allow the Crosstour to go places most luxury sedans wouldn’t attempt to navigate. The Honda Accord Crosstour also has such available new technology as the Honda Satellite-linked Navigation System2, which

incorporates voice activation with an expanded 100,000-word recognition vocabulary and greater sensitivity to more casual and varied commands. The rearview camera included with the navigation system also incorporates guidance lines. Standard safety features on the Crosstour include an Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure; Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA); dual-stage, multiplethreshold front airbags; driver’s and front pas-
senger’s side airbags, and side curtain airbags. Pricing on the 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour ranges from $29,670 for the 2WD EX (18/27 mpg) to $36,220 for the 4WD EXL Navi (17/25 mpg). Miami Music Club members continue 90-year tradition BY TRACY ELLYN
For 90 years, its lively membership has been comprised of composers, performers, teachers, music professionals and music lovers. Its activities have included concerts, competitions, galas and monthly meetings. The club’s philanthropy has resulted in scholarship money for young musicians, and its founding member was none other than composer Mana-Zucca, who settled in Miami and brought musical talents from around the world to perform in her home, which was dubbed “The Carnegie Hall of the South.” The Miami Music Club was founded in 1920 for the express purpose of distributing scholarship money to young, talented musicians on a career path. While many of its original members have passed on, its enrollment continues as fresh faces of all ages become members. President Ana Rodriguez was a Miami Music Club scholarship recipient, and is excited to be giving back to the club that gave her so much. She and Dr. Laura Keith, vice president, are busy performing concerts, holding competitions and increasing enrollment. The Miami Music Club will host its fundraiser, the Annual Gala 2010, on May 12, 1 p.m., at the Steinway Piano Gallery in Coral Gables. Ana Rodriguez and Laura Keith will perform selected one piano-four handspieces, some of which are quite rare. Composers include Shubert, Chopin, Dvorak, Cervantes, Saint-Saens and Barber, who is included in honor of the centennial year of Barber’s birth. The Chopin piece, Variations in D Major, Opus Posthumous, is the only composition he wrote for one piano-four hands, and is so rare that it had to be ordered from Poland because no publisher in the United States distributes it. The Annual Gala 2010 will include a catered lunch and drinks. The cost is $35, and the money goes directly to the Miami Music Club’s scholarship fund. The event is open to the public. Appropriate business attire is requested. Part of the enthusiasm Ana Rodriguez feels for this historic club is due to the scholarship money members once awarded her. She went on to earn her Master of Music degree from the Mannes College of Music. This Cuban-American pianist specializes in Latin American music, and has performed extensively in concerts and recitals

in Europe, Mexico, Canada and the United States. She has been presented in prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie’s Recital Hall and Merkin Recital Hall, and has been televised and broadcast on radio in New York and Mexico. Rodriguez also has received several prestigious awards, including the Puerto Rican Cultural Association’s Emilia Conde Award for young talent, Artist International Special Presentation Award in Carnegie’s Recital Hall, and Artist International Alumni Award in Merkin Recital Hall. She also was seen and heard in the movie Fourhand, where she plays solo and chamber music. Laura Keith received her doctorate in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Miami. The subject of her dissertation was Mana-Zucca, a child prodigy, pianist and composer who was integral in bringing classical music to Miami in the 1920s. Dr. Keith has maintained a piano studio for many years and is the vice president of the Miami Music Teachers Association, as well as vice president of the Miami Music Club. Her students range in age from 3 to adult. Dr. Keith recently gave a lecture recital in Portland, OR, at the National College Music Society Conference, and performed in the Miami Civic Music Piano Gala Concert at UM’s Gusman Hall. Danger of prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse BY COLLEEN WRIGHT
Adam Hall was just like any other 18-yearold — social, athletic and popular — until something that is considered “safe” ended his life. Adam died in 2003 from a drug overdose of cocaine, methadone, diazepam and anti-depressants after a trying addiction with the prescription muscle relaxant Soma, which he and his friends obtained after simply crossing the border into Mexico. His mother, Stacy Hall, continues to spread awareness about the dangers of prescription drug abuse, a growing pandemic among teenagers. Adam is more than just a statistic; he is a testament to the grave effects of prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse. We live in a feel-good society where immediately combating the smallest ounce of pain or discomfort, whether physical or emotional, is the quickest fix. In an effort to always seem on top of the world when self-
esteems are at a new low, people of all ages go to the extreme and often turn to drugs and other harmful substances as a desperate attempt to feel like their life is in order. Schools have done their part in spreading awareness about the detrimental effects of drug use, but lately teens around the country have found what they believe is a safer, legal drug with no apparent permanent effects. Recent studies and reports from the Partnership of a Drug Free America have shown that abuse of prescription and overthe-counter (OTC) drugs is becoming more popular among teenagers. One in five teens in grades nine through 12 (nearly 20 percent) have reported use of a prescription medication not prescribed by a physician at least once in their life. One in seven teens (about 15 percent) have abused a prescription pain reliever and eight percent (1.3 million teens) have reported OTC cough medicine abuse in the past year. Prescription drugs of choice among teens are Vicodin, Tylenol with Codeine, Oxycontin, Percocet, Xanax, Dexedrine and Ritalin. Pills are new to the drug scene and give

TEEN TALK the illusion of being safe because they are accessible, legal and easy to obtain. Contraband substances such as marijuana and cocaine are harder to find than simply opening the family medicine cabinet or taking a short drive to the local drugstore. The Partnership for a Drug Free America’s key findings of the 2009 Partnership/Metlife Foundation Attitude Tracking Study (PATS) found that prescription and OTC drug abuse is prevalent among teens because 62 percent of users said the pills were easy to get. Different polls show that 52 percent said these pills were available and 51 percent preferred these drugs because they are not illegal. In addition, teenagers now have the challenge of dodging random school drug testing and avoiding the severe legal consequences of possessing or using illegal drugs. By taking a few painkillers or double-dosing on cough medicine, teens experience the same high as any other drug. Some teens mix these pills with alcohol or crush and snort them to get the most out of their drug usage. Legal or not, these drugs leave the same destructive mark on teens as the contraband of marijuana and cocaine. PATS also reports that nearly 40 percent of teens said prescription medicines were “much safer” than illicit drugs while 31 percent said there was “nothing wrong” with using prescription drugs “once in a while.” PATS also found that 29 percent of teens believe prescription painkillers are non-addictive.
Tylenol comes to our rescue for a fever, Advil helps alleviate our stomach pain and Bayer lightens the throbbing pressure on our toothaches. But these instant, glorified medicines can have damaging effects when abused. According to <www.theantidrug.com>, some of the immediate effects of prescription and OTC drug abuse are impaired judgment, loss of consciousness, irregular heartbeat, seizures and panic attacks. The more common effects include nausea, headache, vomiting and diarrhea. Sudafed bought from a quick run to the nearest CVS to ease our runny noses can be wonderful, but its purpose should stop at just that. Both teens and parents alike must realize the dangers of these pills as statistics are rising among teenagers. A label can be misleading and misconceptions can sometimes be fatal. Too many pills lead to the territory of dangerous short-term effects and possibly the arena of life-altering consequences. These “legal drugs” are not the solution; a mix or abundance of unpredictable chemicals is never the solution. Today’s overlooked and neglected problems turn into tomorrow’s headlines, or, rather, next issue’s column.
