Oleta River Park selected as site for Comcast Cares Day Anchors Away program highlighted

Oleta River State Park was recently the site of over 600 volunteers looking to give back to their community as part of Comcast Cares Day. Jeanie Hernandez, director of community and government affairs for Comcast, oversees these type of events that engage Comcast employees and various organizations that work together to better their community. Aventura Comm. Billy Joel, Chairman of the Aventura Marketing Council's Anchors Away Committee said, "How proud I was to know that Oleta River State Park was chosen for this special event by Comcast because of our Anchors Away program. This program provides specially equipped dinghies for children with disabilities to learn how to sail. I was amazed to see hundreds upon hundreds of young people there at Oleta to help improve this facility which serves as the homebase for Anchors Away." According to Steven Dale, Park Manager, "What a great opportunity it was for the public to give back and to see what Oleta River State Park has to offer this community. The volunteers painted, built exercise stations and restored the natural resources. It was also great to have our park dignitaries there, including Florida Park Service Director Mike Bullock and Bureau Chief Paul Rice. Jeanie Hernandez of Comcast was an amazing force behind this entire project organizing Hands On Miami, City Year Miami, LABBA and BASF." Francisco Paniagua, Direct Sales Supervisor for Comcast was there with his daughter Melissa and son Carlos who has muscular dystrophy. "When I had first seen the Anchors Away program in action at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club, I did not know that Carlos was diagnosed with MD. Comcast chose Oleta River State Park because of our Community Outreach Program and when we decided to renovate the park, I knew I had to be there. Carlos will now have the opportunity to sail one of the Anchors Away boats because of Comm. Billy Joel and Dr. Jayne Greenberg making this happen." Dr. Jayne Greenberg, Executive Director for the Division of Life Skills and Special Projects for Miami-Dade County Public Schools said, "We're so happy to be partnering with Oleta River State Park on our Anchors Away program. We also take children sailing out of the Coconut Grove Sailing Club and the Miami Yacht Club in order to have children explore the benefits of being in and on the water. This summer, we will be expanding Anchors Away to Larry and Penny Thompson Park in South Miami. Our children can go sailing, kayaking, canoeing, snorkeling and fishing. Oleta, under the leadership of Steven Dale, was our first park program in the county and stands as a role model for all other facilities." VIEWPOINT Closing in on the torturer- A new CCC can get things in-chief done BY PAUL CANTOR Former President George W. Bush may be indicted for torture. Far fetched? Not anymore. In March, Baltasar Garzón, a Spanish judge, asked prosecutors to determine whether there is enough evidence to charge six former members of the Bush administration with torturing prisoners. Should they be indicted as now seems likely, it will be hard to argue that their superiors up to and including the former president himself should not be indicted as well. Imagine if that should happen and a trial take place. It would rivet the attention of the world like no legal action since the prosecution of German and Japanese officials after World War II. More importantly, it would provide credence to the concept of universal jurisdiction championed by Judge Garzón. Universal jurisdiction is the principle that certain crimes are so egregious and/or such a threat to world peace that those who commit them may be arrested and tried in any country of the world. Torture is one of those crimes. Who was most responsible for the torture during Mr. Bush's "war on terror?" Was it the functionaries who carried it out, the members of the administration who justified it, or the Torturer in Chief who authorized it? And if any or all of them are left unpunished, what does it say about the commitment of our nation to the rule of law and human rights? The world knows we can talk the talk. The question it is asking is, ”Will we walk the walk?” Walking the walk would mean leading the charge to bring those who violated our laws and international law by torturing prisoners to justice. That is what President Barack Obama should be doing. Instead, he says, "Look forward, not back." We tortured Native Americans. We tortured slaves. We tortured prisoners under the Phoenix program in Vietnam. At the School of the Americas, we taught future dictators to torture. We supported governments that torture their opponents. Nevertheless, because in our words, if not always in our actions, we also promoted human rights and the rule of law, the Statue of Liberty was the icon of our country for more than 100 years. George W. Bush changed that. Now, because he authorized the torture of people he termed "illegal enemy combatants," the icon of our country is a hooded prisoner with wires attached standing on a box in a

prison in Iraq. Still, President Obama says, "Let's just ignore all that." Baltasar Garzón, on the other hand, says, "Let's not." Garzón is best known for bringing about the arrest of the former dictator of Chile, Augusto Pinochet, under the doctrine of universal jurisdiction. Pinochet was apprehended in 1998 while visiting England. It was the first time the doctrine was applied for crimes against humanity. Now Garzón is asking the public prosecutor in Spain to determine if David Addington, Jay Bybee, Douglas Feith, William Haynes, John Yoo, and Aberto Gonzáles may be charged with violating laws that prohibit the mistreatment of prisoners by providing President Bush with the legal rationale for ordering "harsh interrogation" techniques. "Harsh interrogation" is a euphemism for torture. Harsh interrogation meant being chained for days with hands extended over thehead, being denied toilet facilities, prolonged nudity, waterboarding (a form of torture in which the victim is suffocated to the point of dying), severe beatings, sleep deprivation, exposure to cold temperatures, prolonged solitary confinement, and more. That, according to a Red Cross report, is how suspected terrorists held by the United States were treated. Yet after pictures of U.S. army personnel torturing prisoners at the Abu Gharib prison in Iraq surfaced on the web in 2004, the Bush administration maintained that they depicted the actions of a few rogue soldiers. "We do not torture," the president said in 2005 even though his administration had long before sought and obtained legal cover for interrogators to use "harsh interrogation techniques" against suspected terrorists. The legal cover came from the six former officials now being investigated by Garzon. "Behind much of the savagery of modern history," wrote Kenneth Roth, the executive director of Human Rights Watch, "lies impunity. Tyrants commit atrocities, including genocide, when they calculate they can get away with them." If President Obama heeds those words, he will join Baltasar Garzón's effort to bring to justice all those responsible for torturing prisoners in Bush's war against terror. --Paul Cantor teaches economics at Norwalk Community College in Connecticut.

BY JIM HIGHTOWER The report cards have come out, and I'm afraid we're just not making the grade. I'm talking about the "Infrastructure Report Card," issued every four years by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The engineers do an analysis of the condition of 15 categories of our country's crucial infrastructure - including roads, drinking water, parks, schools, and levees. The latest report scores us a big fat D. Our actual performance is even worse than this poor grade indicates, for America was rated a D+ in 2001, meaning our officials have let these public assets deteriorate further in the past eight years. The engineering group says that our leaders ignore essential upkeep on our national house, relying on what the group calls "patch and pray" fixes. The group reports that it'll take a concerted national effort costing $2.2 trillion over the next five years to lift America to a grade of A, where we belong. That's 18 times the size of the infrastructure funding in President Barack Obama's current recovery plan, but at least his plan makes a significant start at moving

our country in the right direction. Meanwhile, there's another plan that the Obamacans are said to be considering that has special merit. It's a grassroots proposal to reactivate the enormously successful Civilian Conservation Corps that Roosevelt launched in the Great Depression. The revitalized CCC would enlist thousands of young Americans in all 50 states, putting them to work on the huge backlog of reconstruction projects so urgently needed on the 700 million acres of both urban and rural public lands across our country. Let's put Americans to work on jobs that really need to be done, building national assets for future generations. FPL continues comprehensive program to strengthen Aventura's electrical infrastructure FPL plans to inspect approximately 210 poles in the City of Aventura for strength and health in 2009 As part of Florida Power & Light Company's ongoing commitment to strengthen the electrical infrastructure in the City of Aventura, in 2009 the company will inspect approximately 210 poles, clear vegetation from seven miles of power lines, and use infrared technology to examine two main power lines. "We are continuing to invest to make our infrastructure stronger in good weather and bad. While no system will be immune to the devastating power of a severe weather event, our goal is to minimize damage to critical infrastructure so that we can respond more quickly. These investments are designed to respond to the potential for more frequent, more powerful hurricanes, but are also delivering customer benefits because they enhance dayto-day reliability as well," said FPL External Affairs Manager Aletha Player.

FPL crews install a new 70-foot concrete pole designed to withstand winds of approximately 145 miles per hour in Miami

2006-2009 Infrastructure Investments and Action Plan Following the 2004-2005 hurricane seasons that saw seven storms in a 15-month period, FPL responded to the state's call to

maintain a high level of storm preparation. FPL embarked on a series of comprehensive investments and improvements to strengthen its electrical infrastructure to better withstand the impact of severe weather, recognizing that no utility can be 100 percent storm-proof. The work is also designed to further reduce customer outages through aggressive preventative maintenance projects on its overhead and underground lines and equipment. Strengthening Progress Highlights in Aventura By the end of 2009, FPL will have made the following improvements and investments since 2006 benefiting the City of Aventura:

• Trimmed tree limbs and branches along 24 miles of power lines in the City. Tree limbs and branches, especially palm fronds, are among the most common causes of power outages and flickers. • Inspected six main power lines using special infrared technology called Thermovision to detect and address issues in power lines and equipment before they become problems or outages. • Upgraded and strengthened several main power lines serving critical roads and facilities in and near Aventura, including Aventura Hospital, Hollywood Medical Center and Jackson North Medical Center, as well as the Biscayne Boulevard and East Hallandale Beach Boulevard areas.

• Inspected approximately 780 poles for strength and health, which represents 70 percent of the approximately 1,110 poles in Aventura. Systemwide, the company is committed to repairing or replacing poles as necessary as part of its comprehensive program to inspect FPL's 1 million poles every eight years.

"We are always working to improve our performance so that our customers continue to enjoy overall service reliability levels among the best in the country," Player said. For more information on FPL's reliability initiatives in your area, please visit FPL.com/neighborhood

Historically Yours BY BOB DIAMOND JEFFERSON AND SALLY: AN INTIMACY

The slave-girl Sally Hemings bore seven children by Thomas Jefferson over their 38-year liaison, according to historian Annett Gordon Reed, in her 2009 Pulitzer Prize epic book, “The Hemingses of Monticello.” Background facts are critical. Having only two surviving daughters after six births, Martha Jefferson, on her deathbed, exacted a promise from Jefferson that he would never remarry. Sally, light-skinned and beautiful, was half sister to Martha, being the daughter of Martha’s father John Wales and his slave concubine, Elizabeth Hemings. On the death of Wales, Martha inherited her father’s slaves, including Sally. While Jefferson, now a widower, was serving as Minister to France, Sally arrived in Paris as a fourteenyear-old chaperone for Jefferson’s daughter Polly. Polly joined her older sister Patsy at a boarding school, while Sally remained with Jefferson, eventually in charge of his bedchamber. Gordon-Reed meticulously pieced together every bit of information on that

subject. For a brief period of time, Jefferson was intimately involved with a married woman, Maria Cosway. As their relationship faded, in correspondence with her, he described the story of a painting he saw at a Dusseldorf art museum: “Above all things, those of Van der Werff affected me the most. His picture of Sarah delivering Agar to Abraham is delicious (a fascinatingly erotic word).” In the painting, an older man, sitting in his bed is being given a beautiful young woman to sleep with. The painting referred to the Old Testament story of Abraham and his wife, Sarah. Too old for childbearing, Sarah brought a young servant girl, Hagar, of Egyptian mixed blood, to Abraham to bear his child and Sarah would then raise the child as her own. As Jefferson was writing those words, according to Gordon-Reed, there was such a girl of mixed blood, Sally, who had been sent to live with him, sleeping in his house. That enslaved girl, ironically named Sarah (Sally’s true name), was in his life “solely because she had been brought there by his wife.” When 46-year-old Jefferson returned to Virginia in October 1789, Sally, age 16, was pregnant. DNA confirmed the Jefferson connection.

Miami Beach Convention Center ready to be your next social and corporate venue BY LYNN CARROLL Miami Beach Convention Center's great amenities and services aren't just for big conventions anymore. Its meeting spaces are available for local corporate and social affairs, from galas and weddings to bar mitzvahs and quinces. "We have 70 meeting rooms and four

ballrooms," says Cristina Abrams, account executive for social events. "From an intimate setting of 50 to a gathering of 1,300 our flexible spaces make it easy to pick the size that works best for your event. We offer extraordinary catering services provided by Centerplate and our new partner Touch

Catering, which offer several choices of kosher cuisine." Those planning an event in 2010 can take advantage of a special deal: for any 2010 event contracted before October 2009, using Centerplate and/or Touch Catering, the room rental fee will be waived. Rental fee is normally charged in addition to operating costs such as liability insurance, set-up, dance-floor, security and catering. The rent waiver, Abrams says, presents an opportunity to introduce use of the Convention Center to greater numbers. "People are usually very familiar with our exhibit space," she notes, "but often they don't realize that we have so much else to offer. That's something we'd like to change. "And with the economy the way it is, we thought it would be a very good incentive to waive the rent for these events. This should make the Miami Beach Convention Center very attractive at a time when people are trying to keep expenses down. "We're confident," she says, "that people will find our facilities will add class and convenience to any special get-together." A required 5% deposit will be held in escrow with the developer, and will either be applied to the down payment or refunded in full if the option to buy is not utilized. Ouazanan heads ArTech's leasing division, a position in which he reports an early and positive response to rental opportunities. Joining Fortune International in June 2008, his real estate experience spans the east coast, working in both the residential and commercial categories in New York and South Florida. Ouazanan holds New York and Florida Real Estate Sales Associate licenses and is a member of the New York and Florida Board of Realtors. In addition to the already successful Lease-to-Own program, ArTech sales reflect buyer confidence, with 22 units sold since the beginning of April. ArTech breaks through traditional barriers of condominium design to create a nautical-inspired structure that reflects its waterfront environment, advanced technology and marina amenities. Fashioned more after an aerodynamic vehicle than a traditional building, ArTech's cruise-ship-like design takes full advantage of the close to 900 feet of direct water frontage, creating an overall look that complements the boats that will be moored on its docks. Lain out horizontally along this stretch, the building offers the endless amenities of a large property, as well as those of a low-rise building at only nine stories high. ArTech boasts more than 40,000 square feet of amenity space, more than any condo development in Aventura and one of the largest in Miami-Dade. Fortune International's Edgardo Defortuna joined forces with Shefaor Development's Claudio Stivelman and Gilbert Benhamou, to create ArTech as Aventura's largest and most advanced new condominium community. Residences are priced from $325,000 to more than $1.3 million, with rentals ranging from $1,600 to $3,600 per month. ArTech is located at 2950 NE 188 Street, Aventura. ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER

Time to change the grounds rules Q: I’ve been married over 50 years. About two years ago my wife lost all interest in sex and there seems to be nothing I can do to get her jump-started again. Is there any hope or is our sex life over? A: I can’t tell you whether or not your wife will ever renew her interest in sex. If she feels that she’s missing out, then she should seek professional counseling. On the other hand, even if she never wants to have intercourse with you again, that does not have to mean that your sex life is over but should simply mean that the grounds rules have to be changed. What I’m suggesting is that you have a talk with your wife and tell her that you won’t pressure her into having sex but that you are not yet ready to give up one

of life’s great pleasures. Tell her that you still need to be touched and ask her if she would continue to caress your genitals without taking a greater role. If she says she’s too tired in the evening, see if she would do it during the morning hours. Hopefully even if her sex drive has been permanently turned off, her love for you hasn’t and she will be willing to offer you the pleasing touch of her hand. Q: I’ve heard that there are nursing homes that have special rooms where the residents can have sex. Is this something that you condone? A: I have always advocated that long term facilities should have dating rooms. There is certainly no justification in forcing our older citizens to give up their right to companionship. Just because two people are using the dating room doesn’t necessarily mean they are having sex, but even if they are just holding hands or cuddling, they should be allowed to do so in complete privacy. I understand that being able to lock the door might cause problems in the event of a medical emergency, but if a couple hang the Do Not Disturb sign up, everyone, staff and residents alike, should abide by it just as if that door were locked.

2009 Douglas Gardens Golf and Poker Tournament raises over $40,000 for local seniors Local philanthropic organizations, the Douglas Gardens' Men's Club and Next Generation, recently hosted the 2009 Douglas Gardens Classic at the Westview County Club. With over 130 participants, the event successfully raised over $40,000 to benefit the Miami Jewish Home and Hospital's (MJHH) Transportation Services Program. These funds will be used to purchase wheelchair-accessible vans, transport trams and other vehicles to help MJHH residents safely and efficiently travel throughout MJHH's on-campus facility, as well as commute to off-campus appointments. The community-wide event featured a golf tournament, hole-in-one contests, varying fairway and green games, and a Texas Hold-'Em Poker tournament. The festivities concluded with an awards dinner which was hosted by famed radio and television personality Hank Goldberg. In the men's golf competition, Sydney

Josepher, Jack Langer, Lenny Parker and Ben Walker walked away victorious. Bringing home wins in the women's golf competition were: Susan Fuller, Jan Hart, Freddie Schwartz and Peggy Silver. And taking first place in the mixed foursome: Dick Absher, Jim Schenkel, Patrick Reagan and Claire Chassen. Meanwhile, on the cards table, David Cohen was the Grand Prize winner and Andy Milberg was runner-up in the Texas Hold 'Em Competition. Riding on the coat tails of this year's successful event, the Douglas Gardens groups are already planning next years festivities, which is set to include a clinic with famed professional golfer, Bruce Fleisher. For more information on the Douglas Gardens Classic and/or The Men's Club or Next Generation of Douglas Gardens, please contact Judy Fisher at 305-751-8626.

Nissan 370Z for 2009 is a redesigned beauty Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Nissan 350Z has been a personal favorite from the day I first slid behind the wheel back in 2002. My appreciation for the iconic little sports car only has deepened after driving the all-new 370Z. It’s the first full redesign of the vehicle since its re-introduction as a 2003 model and Nissan says that almost every piece and component has been re-thought or redesigned, giving the car a shorter wheelbase, greater use of lightweight body materials, a new engine with more horsepower and improved fuel economy, a new seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, a synchronized downshift rev matching system for the manual transmission, a new high-quality driver-centric interior and new add-on technology features. But it’s the sensual new design that ini-

tially grabs your attention. There’s even a subtle upswept line to the new rear quarter window that recalls the original 240Z of 1970, a car that carried the Datsun name back then and was a hallmark of performance and style. Nissan designers really did their homework to improve the popular Z car. The 370Z has an aggressive yet sensual look and a lighter, tighter structure for better performance. It rides on a wheelbase that’s about four inches shorter than the previous generation Z car (100.4 inches versus 104.3 inches), while overall length is reduced by 2.7 inches (167.1 inches versus 169.8 inches). Engineers moved the rear wheels forward in the second generation of the FM platform to achieve the shorter wheelbase. At the same time, overall width has been increased by 1.3 inches, the rear track by 2.2 inches and overall height reduced by 0.3 inches. The more compact exterior dimensions and expanded use of lightweight materials — including an aluminum hatch and door panels, and an allaluminum hood (the previous design had steel reinforcements) — reduce the car’s overall weight.

Redesigned Nissan 370Z has sensual, aggressive look and rides on a four-inch shorter wheelbase.

The body structure also was extensively revised, improving front body torsion rigidity by 30 percent; a new front suspension cradle to reduce front body lateral bending; new rear structural reinforcements, and an underbody “V-bar” to help reduce rear lateral bending. Rear body torsion rigidity is improved by up to 22 percent. The result is enhanced overall solidity and handling. Other enhancements include a carbon fiber composite radiator housing and strengthening of the rear fender and hatch areas. Under the hood, the 370Z gets power from the fourth generation of Nissan’s

award-winning VQ-series 332 hp 3.7-liter V-6 engine with VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift), a gain of 26 horses from the previous engine. The new 370Z Coupe hit U.S. showrooms in January and has been one of the few bright spots in the struggling economy. A convertible Roadster is in the pipeline for 2010. Base price on the 370Z is $34,460. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. The power of words BY PATRICIA C. FRANK A word is a sound or combination of sounds that form a meaningful element of speech, and writing. Words make up languages which are a style of expression used by all people. Words have tremendous and unequaled power. They have the power to hurt and harm. They also have the power to heal. Because they are so strong and effectual, it is very important to use them with caution and wisdom. Think before you speak. Consider the impact your words will have. Once they are spoken they cannot be taken back. The damage or the blessings are instantaneous. Some people think that they can say anything they want regardless of how much their words may hurt someone. This is simply not true. Having the right to speak does not mean that it is right to speak certain things. Even if you think something is true, it may not be. In reality, it is just your perception and just your opinion. No matter what you think or how upset or angry you feel, you are not justified using words that are hurtful. It does not give you permission to be abusive or unkind.

Words can wound even when they are not meant to cause harm. These wounds may be invisible but they exist and can continue to inflict pain for years to come. The damage can last a lifetime. Words can linger in a person’s mind and heart and alter the course of their lives for better or for worse. They can prevent someone from achieving their full potential, especially children. Even the words you use with yourself are very powerful and can create heaven or hell in your life. If you use them improperly against someone, you will trigger negative emotions and thoughts in them. This will set off a chain reaction that will ultimately come back to harm you. Strive to be impeccable, spotless and immaculate in your use of words. In the same way that words can destroy they can also heal. Words have been known to literally save someone’s life. They can bring joy and comfort. They can inspire and uplift. They can give pleasure that lasts forever. The right word, at the right time used in the right way can change everything. Choose your words wisely. Choose only positive words of love both for yourself and for everyone else. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212 308-0309.

Take your special event to the water aboard Biscayne Lady Yacht Charters BY LYNN CARROLL Any special occasion becomes memorable when it's held aboard a flagship vessel from Biscayne Lady Yacht Charters. Whether it's a corporate event, wedding, holiday party, birthday party, bar or bat mitzvah, quince or graduation party, Biscayne Lady Yacht Charters is prepared to make guests feel like royalty as they sail around Biscayne Bay. "A typical tour lasts about three and a half hours," says Ryan Guerra, the charter company's marketing and production manager. "But we have done both longer and shorter charters." The company offers a choice of two luxury vessels - Biscayne Lady has a capacity of 380 people, and Venetian Lady accommodates 140. The company's charter consultants can help clients choose which vessel best suits their needs. During this tough economy, we are working even harder with our clients' tight budgets. The sales staff is also eager to help with event planning. Clients have a choice of standardized packages or customized events. "We pride ourselves on accommodating any type of request," Guerra says. "Once a client chooses to rent the vessel and they let us know what

they want in the way of entertainment and food, we go to work with them to create a truly unforgettable event. We do whatever we can to make it happen." Biscayne Lady has been in operation for about five years; Venetian Lady was added about a year and a half ago. "Our growth as a luxury yacht business has been based on client demand," Guerra says. "The company built the boats themselves, basing the design on the experience and functionality. "South Florida is at its most magical when it's seen from the emerald waters that surround it. So a party cruise is going to make any event one that everyone will remember." The Grill on the Alley introduces delicious new Happy Hour This summer The Grill on the Alley is the perfect place to relax after a shopping marathon and unwind like a Hollywood star after work. One of the few destinations that offers weekend libations and half-price bites, Happy Hour at The Grill is available Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Drink specials include a selection of beer for $3.50 and wine by the glass for $2 below the regular menu price. The Skyy's the limit with signature martinis such as the Ruby Red Lemon Drop (Skyy Citrus Vodka, fresh squeezed grapefruit, lemon and lime juice) and the Espresso Martini (Skyy Vodka, Godiva Chocolate Liqueur, Baileys and freshly brewed espresso) for only $7. The Happy Hour bites menu includes a variety of The Grill favorites. The $3.95 menu includes Popcorn Shrimp (tempura battered rock shrimp, served with Cajun tartar sauce), Mac & Cheese (blend of cheddar, gruyere and Danish fontina cheese with a crunchy panko topping), Hummus (traditional hummus served with grilled flat bread and cucumbers) and Fried Calamari (tender calamari rings, lightly seasoned and served with Cajun tartar sauce). The $4.95 menu offers classics such as Crab Cake Side Kicks (two mini jumbo lump crab cakes served with remoulade cole slaw), Seared Ahi Tuna Sashimi (coated with black and white sesame seeds, pan-seared extra rare and served with pickled ginger, wasabi and soy sauce), Steak Tartare (mixed with olive oil, capers, onions, egg yolk, Dijon mustard, lemon, anchovy and Worcestershire served with rye toast), Chicken Pot Pie (fresh chicken, carrots, onion, peas and mushroom, topped with a flaky crust) and Kobe Side Kicks (two mini Kobe burgers with

blue cheese, mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato). The Grill on the Alley serves up classic American fare, stellar service and a celebrity following in Aventura. Modeled after the big city grills of the 1930's and 40's, The Grill on the Alley offers a timeless menu of prime steaks, chops, fresh seafood, and classic cocktails paired with uncompromising service. The Grill is open daily at 11 a.m. Valet parking is available and reservations are recommended by calling 305-466-7195. Help Israel and benefit financially BY EILEEN GLASTEIN Here we are…stuck in this quagmire of a stagnating economy. Instead of burying your head in the sand, let’s do something constructive to insure some quality of life while we are here. I can hear your words “I have been stung and lost much of my savings and you think you can help?” Yes, there is a safe place for you. Bnai Zion Foundation is a 101 year old charity that has been quietly funding humanitarian projects in Israel. We are offering Charitable Gift Annuities that give you a high (fixed) interest while you are collecting payments. It is all governed by the insurance actuary charts. The older you are, the higher the interest. You receive a tax deduction for a charitable gift along with this high interest. In addition, part of your income is tax-free. This is a way to stay secure for the rest of your life. When you are gone, the remaining money left in the account goes to fund either the children at Ahava Village, Bnai Zion Medical Center or one of our other projects. Right now we can all use a little help financially. What a joyful and inspiring way to secure our future and the future of Israel. By visiting our website, www.bnaizion.org <http://www.bnaizion.org/> , you can find information on all the very important work we

are doing for Israeli society and discover our rich history of providing over a century of humanitarian assistance. I’m willing to bet a cup of coffee that you are familiar with our work but never knew it was Bnai Zion Foundation who made it happen. Financial planning using our Charitable Gift Annuity vehicle will give you a very comfortable lifestyle, a sense of financial security and will help ensure the continuing work of Bnai Zion Foundation. We can help you in these unstable times and in the end you will have helped children at risk, sick people, those with disabilities and those who need education. I have a long-time friend on the beach. She has been buying annuities for 15 years. Our dismal economy has no effect on her. The annuities that she purchased in the “good ole days” were bringing her 12%. Don’t forget the interest is Fixed. Even in this day her age gives her 11% return. Every few months, she saves her interest checks until she can buy another annuity. She has no financial worries and goes to sleep each night knowing that when she no longer collects, her money will go to improve lives. Want to hear more? Call me at 305 949.0076 or email eileen.glastein@bnaizion.org <mailto:eileen.glastein@bnaizion.org> and visit our website www.bnaizion.org <http://www.bnaizion.org/> . With a financial planning opportunity like this we all are winners.

Denise Rubin talks Real Estate

Home Theaters BY DENISE RUBIN Home theaters are growing in popularity and becoming more professional. Achieving a cinematic picture has always been the goal of home theater aficionados. New digital innovations-combined with decade old optical technology achieves this goal. It brings movie theater pictures into your home. Images can stretch across an entire wall of a home theater. The effect is in a word, epic. Action becomes as enveloping and enthralling, as in the film industry’s finest screening rooms and showcase theaters. A best known trade name for wide shape is Cinema Scope. In the last few years prices have come way down due to all the competitions and mass market projectors. In some rooms the screen can occupy almost an entire wall providing an impressive and captivating image. A screen can be made to disappear into the ceiling, rolling down automatically when the projector is activated and retracting when not in use. At least one screen – Steward Film screen’s cinecurve – has been designed specifically for ultra wide home theater use. Its gently curved face directs more

light toward the audience for a broader picture, just as many commercial movie screens. Fortunately, professional home theater designers and installers can make all the operations transparent to users. They make the process automatic triggering all functions through touch panel remote controls available from such companies as AMX or Crestron. Most of the elite companies, including Runco, JVC Pro, and Sims, market their products exclusively through custom electronics installation firms. You can locate such firms by accessing the dealer lists on these manufacturer’s websites or through member search function on the custom electronic design and installation associations’ home page (CEDIA). Most home theaters these days also boast custom built stadium seating. Also popular are the Cinelounger motion seating collection. Some have a built-in stage while others have fabric walls to soundproof while creating the right effects inside for the theater’s sound quality. Yes, ultra screen video projection brings cinemascope-style images to home theaters, so relax at home and “ENJOY THE SHOW!!” Call DENISE RUBIN/Denise Rubin Realty, LLC (305) 409-0019 for all your Real Estate needs and visit www.deniserubin.com for all listings and virtual tours.

Oprah Winfrey’s constantly wavering weight has been the “talk of the tabloids” along with the frustration of former Jenny Craig spokesperson Kirstie Alley, who gained back all the weight she lost, plus 10 extra pounds. But according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the celebrities aren’t alone in their struggle,…About one-third of participants in a recent study who had experienced substantial weight loss had regained more than five percent of their body weight back one year later. “Yo-yo” dieting - a continuing pattern of gaining and losing weight, sometimes referred to as “weight cycling” can occur when a diet includes bouts of starvation, missing meals, or very low calories. When the body knows less calories are coming in, it can adapt and start conserving energy. Then, your metabolism can start to slow down – thus creating a “plateau” effect as weight loss initially achieved wanes or stops. To put an end to “yo-yo” cycles, it’s helpful to alter the perception of a “diet” as a change in how to eat to lose weight and start thinking of eating as way of life. Health and fitness experts recommend keeping the following tips in mind to stay on track: To break a weight loss plateau, give your metabolism a boost. Aim to increase your levels of physical activity. Have small snacks throughout the day rather

than large meals. Each time you eat, your body experiences an increase in metabolic rate. You can also stave off extreme hunger by eating throughout the day. Be aware of your “high-risk situations” when you’re more likely to overeat and come up with a “non-food” solution like going for a walk or talking with a friend. Realize healthy weight loss is going to take time. Have a goal of losing one to two pounds a week. Slow weight loss is healthier and easier to maintain than any crash diet. Be active every day. The best weight loss success happens with a combination of healthy eating and physical activity. Exercise regularly using your large muscles (i.e. the buttocks and the legs) doing activities such as walking, running, cycling and weight lifting. You will burn 50 more calories each day for every pound of muscle gained. Unlike fat, one pound of muscle won’t produce a noticeable increase in body size like fat gain does. Remember that pounds lost on the scale are not the only measure of success. Take note of how clothes fit; there may be a loss of inches before pounds. Also energy levels may start to increase. Watch your portion sizes and choose lean proteins, low-glycemic carbs such as sweet potatoes and brown rice and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Stay positive and stay away from fad diets so it will be possible “just say no” to yo-yo dieting and maintain a healthy weight for life.
