North Dade Justice Center celebrates 51st 'Law Day' featuring "This is Your Life" tribute to retiring Chief Judge Joseph P. Farina BY BARI AUERBACH Business and community leaders recently collaborated with judges from the North Dade Justice Center to present the 51st Law Day celebration featuring a tribute to retiring Chief Judge Joseph P. Farina and warm welcome to the Hon. Joel Brown, incoming Chief Judge, 11th Judicial Circuit. The theme of Law Day 2009 was "A Legacy of Liberty," celebrating the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln. Farina's legacy of outstanding service was also commemorated as a special fun and touching "Judge Farina - This is Your Life" presentation was made by many of his good friends and colleagues. Law Day was held in conjunction with "Law Week" - observed nationally every year in May to help promote a greater understanding of the American justice system. Special thanks for supporting the event was expressed to public officials, organizations and participants including the Aventura Marketing Council, Blue Bell Ice Cream, BNY Mellon Bank, the Caribbean Bar Association, Clerk of Courts, COSTCO North Miami Beach, Cuban American Bar Association, Florida Association for Women Lawyers, the Haitian Lawyers Association, North Dade Bar Association and Daily Business Review. The Law Day event commenced with an invocation by Village of Miami Shores Mayor Herta Holly; the Village of Miami Shores Honor Guard presentation; Krop Senior High Natalia Sulca singing the National Anthem; and the Pledge of Allegiance led by the Bailiffs of the North Dade Justice Center. Declaring Law Day officially in session, Judge Myriam Lehr and Judge Linda

Aventura Marketing Council recognizes Ofc. Brian Hankoff After observing a suspicious vehicle while en route to work, Ofc. Hankoff conducted a routine record check and determined that the vehicle had been reported stolen in Broward. With the assistance of back-up officers, the two subjects inside were apprehended. During inventory of the vehicle an unopened bottle of gin was found, Ofc. Hankoff was able to determine it had been stolen from a nearby Walgreens. A search of the passenger revealed that he was in possession of a crack pipe and he'd also been reported as a missing person with the Ft. Lauderdale PD. The driver was found to be in possession

of a knife with a 10inch blade and had an open Fugitive Warrant out of Broward for possession of narcotics/paraphernalia. During further investigation the driver was found to be recovering from a recent gunshot wound, related to a Davie case. In addition, Ofc. Hankoff discovered another suspicious vehicle, which he confirmed to be reported stolen with the Miami-Dade Police Department. Along with several other officers, Hankoff conducted a felony stop of the stolen vehicle and the driver was subsequently taken into custody, without incident.

Aventura Hospital recently celebrated the tenth anniversary of the dedication of the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center. This event, appropriately titled "A Decade of Hope and Caring," recognized the past ten years of improving the lives of patients and caregivers in our community through the programs and services offered by the Cancer Center. This special celebration was well-attended by hospital-affiliated physicians, office staff, volunteers, nurses and employees. "I am very glad to be a part of this important milestone event for the Aventura community and was fortunate to have participated in the Cancer Center's grand opening ceremonies in 1999," said Aventura Hospital CEO Heather Rohan. VIEWPOINT 10 things you didn’t know Ros-Lehtinen discusses U.S.about Jewish Americans Pakistan Policy with Holbrooke BY CONGRESSWOMAN DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ

For the last several years, the contributions of American Jews to American history have been recognized in the month of May, better known as Jewish American Heritage Month. This year I thought we’d take a different approach. From my office in South Florida, here’s “10 things you didn’t know about Jewish Americans.” 10. The first Jewish Member of Congress was from Florida. In 1841 David Levy Yulee became the first Jew to serve in Congress and to become a United States Senator. As a member of Congress he represented North Florida. Both Yulee and Levy County, Florida are named for him. 9. Dodgers Pitcher Sandy Koufax Missed a Game of the World Series for Yom Kippur. Reaching the World Series is the ultimate honor for baseball players. But for one, the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur came first. Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax was scheduled to pitch the first game of the 1965 World Series against the Minnesota Twins. Since Yom Kippur is the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, Koufax refused to pitch and went to Temple instead. He did come back and pitch games two, five and seven, though, and helped the Dodgers win the championship. 8. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was co-founded by American Jews. The 1950s and ‘60s were trying times for African-Americans in this country. Many from the American Jewish community supported them during the civil rights movement. In fact, several of the co-founders of the NAACP were Jewish. 7. An American Jew was part of the First Group of Settlers in Roanoke Island. The first recorded Jew in Colonial America was Joachim Gans. In 1584, Sir Walter Raleigh recruited him to join an expedition to found a permanent settlement in the Virginia territory of the New World. Sir Richard Grenville, the leader of the expedition founded the infamous Roanoke Colony on Roanoke Island off the coast of North Carolina in 1585. Because the royal mining company failed to resupply colonists who were also becoming increasingly fearful of conflicts with Native Americans, they accepted an offer from Sir Francis Drake in June 1586 to sail them back to England. 6. There was a Jewish Paul Revere. On July 31, 1776, Francis Salvador, a plantation owner from South Carolina, was killed in a British-incited skirmish with Native Americans. He was the first Jew killed in the Revolutionary War. Salvador was nicknamed the “Paul Revere of the South” because on July 1, 1776, he mounted his horse and rode 30 miles to warn the settlers that the Cherokee Indians, angered by the British, were attacking the frontier. 5. “God Bless America” was written by a Jewish American. The patriotic song is often sung at sporting events, recitals, and other public events. But did you know it was written by a Jewish American man? Irving Berlin wrote the original score in 1918. In

1938, he revised it because of the rise of Adolf Hitler. 4. A Jewish Man Discovered the Vaccine for Polio. Until 1955, polio was considered the most frightening public health problem of the postwar era. Annual epidemics kept getting worse and victims were usually children. By 1952 it was killing more of them than any other communicable disease with over 57,000 cases reported that year. Thanks to Jonas Salk we now have a vaccine. Salk introduced it to the world in 1955 and since then it has saved countless lives. 3. A Jewish Woman Helped Ignite the Women’s Movement. Betty Friedan was central to the reshaping of American attitudes toward women’s lives and rights. Friedan’s l963 book, The Feminine Mystique, detailed the frustrating lives of countless American women who were expected to be fulfilled primarily by the achievements of husbands and children. The book made an enormous impact, triggering a period of change that continues today. She was a founder of the National Organization for Women, a convener of the National Women’s Political Caucus, and a key leader in the struggle for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. 2. Gold Medal Olympian Mark Spitz was Jewish. It’s a record that stood for many years and many never thought it would be broken – in 1972, swimmer Mark Spitz won 7 gold medals at the Munich Olympics. Spitz set a new world record in each of the seven events: the 100 meter freestyle, 200 meter freestyle, 100 meter butterfly, 200 meter butterfly, 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay, 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay, and the 4 x 100 meter medley relay. It was not until the summer of 2008 that his record was broken, by American swimmer Michael Phelps, who won 8 gold medals in the Beijing Games. 1. Many of our Nation’s Public Servants are Jewish. Today Jews make up 7.5% of the U.S. Congress—31 serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and 13 serve in the Senate. They hail from the states of Florida, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia, Tennessee and Wisconsin. As Jews make up only two percent of our nation’s population, most Americans have had few interactions with Jews and our traditions. It is my hope that by providing the framework for the discussion of Jewish culture and contributions to our nation, we will be able to reduce the lack of knowledge that ultimately leads to anti-Semitism and intolerance. Through a better understanding of Jewish culture, Jewish American Heritage Month will not only influence Americans’ perspective of Jews, but all minorities. Furthermore, it will serve as a catalyst for educators and others to further the understanding of the role that Jews have played in American history. BY CONGRESSWOMAN ILEANA ROS-LEHTINEN U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Ranking Republican of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, made the following statement today at a hearing with Richard C. Holbrooke, U.S. Special Representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan, on the future of the U.S. - Pakistan Relationship. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen: “We are united in our goals. “We want a: • long-term partnership with a modern, prosperous and democratic Pakistan that is at peace with itself and with its neighbors; • a Pakistan that maintains robust controls over its nuclear weapons technology; and • a Pakistan that does not provide safe haven to al Qaeda, the Taliban, and other Islamist militant extremists. “While command and control of Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal is presumably a top concern of Islamabad, recent Taliban advances underscore the critical importance of ensuring security for its nuclear materials and technology. “As Secretary Clinton testified recently, the nuclear weapons have been dispersed throughout Pakistan, increasing the risk that these may find their way to al-Qaeda, Taliban, or other Islamist extremists. “We must redouble our efforts on Pakistan’s technical and human security capacity, so as to ensure there is a robust safeguards mechanism in place for its nuclear weapons program and facilities. “The stakes are simply too high to ignore. “The administration has endorsed Senate proposals to increase non-military assistance to Pakistan to $1.5 billion over the next five years. “When combined with existing or contemplated assistance programs, total U.S. aid to Pakistan – including reimbursements to the Pakistani military by the Department of Defense – would total at least $3.5 billion per fiscal year, or about $17.5 billion total over the next five years. “Operationally, how are we going to effectively put such funds to use? “The American Embassy in Islamabad is under a virtual lockdown because of security concerns “We have withdrawn critical staff from our key consular outpost along the Pakistani frontier and, because of the difficult security environment, our Foreign Service officers generally serve only one year tours in Pakistan. “This means that they will have barely begun to understand their brief before they are rotated out and we lose critical institutional memory. “The Administration proposes to remedy these difficulties, in part, with an $800 million request in the supplemental appropriation bill for embassy security, construction and maintenance for Pakistan. “Completion of these projects, however,

will, in some cases, take several months and, in others, many years. “While issues of U.S. diplomatic capacity get sorted out, the administration has suggested that it may allocate much of the proposed increase in nonmilitary aid primarily toward budget support. “Any proposed U.S. budget support would be in addition to at least $14 billion committed by the international financial institutions through 2013. “Some would contend that enhanced trade with Pakistan may be far more economically meaningful than expanded aid. “There are legislative efforts we’re told the Administration supports that would create Reconstruction Opportunity Zones in Afghanistan and the border areas of Pakistan. “Unfortunately, about a third of Pakistan’s annual exports to the U.S. would be excluded from the definition of eligible products. “There is limited industrial activity on the border areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. “The Pakistani state is finding it hard to provide for basic amenities for its current population, much less after the expected boom in its population size. “Further, under the circumstances entrepreneurs are likely to be wary of new investments in the proposed industrial zones. “Turning to the immediate security concerns and urgently needed assistance on this front, there needs to be secure and reliable sources of funding – not just for military assistance, but to assist the police and civilian law enforcement as the first line of defense against extremists. “Some observers have recently argued that past cut-offs which, in turn, affected IMET programs, have seriously ‘harmed our bilateral efforts’ and have made those Pakistani officers not participating in IMET increasingly vulnerable to Islamist militants. “Ambassador Holbrooke, do you see any correlation between this and the rising proTaliban sentiment within the ranks of the Pakistani military? “This raises the core question of political will, as implicit in proposals to dramatically ramp up U.S. foreign assistance, is the assumption that Pakistan’s political class shares the increasing U.S. concern about the threat posed to their own country by Islamist radicals. “If U.S. and Pakistani strategic priorities are seriously misaligned, American foreign assistance will be of fleeting significance. “Congress and the Executive Branch must move quickly toward a common understanding on the immediate and longer-term priorities, the appropriate mix of policy instruments to maximize our prospects for success, and the timeline for implementing these different elements of our strategy. “Ultimately, if we are to succeed in eliminating militant safe havens and strengthening Pakistani democracy, it will require steadiness of purpose in Washington, but perhaps more importantly, commensurate commitments by Islamabad.”

Let iNet Group maximize your website's potential BY LYNN CARROLL Don't think just any website will positively impact a business, advises Aventura's iNet Group Founder David Ghelman. A site needs not only to look good but be tailored to reach your target market. "Sometimes a website looks great," says Ghelman, "but if it's hard to navigate, it will just frustrate visitors. Let us assist in all stages of your David Ghelman company's web presence, from creating and hosting a brand new site to upgrading or adding features to an existing one." The iNet Group's success in website development, he says, is built on simple but effective concepts that include usability as well as attractive design. "We do a detailed analysis for a client," Ghelman says. "We consider not only the look and feel of a website, but also the best way to get a specific message across." He says poorly conceived flash-media presentations, for example, can be not only annoying but may drive away potential customers. "A visitor doesn't want to figure out how to find information or wait for some fancy

design to do a circus act on every click," Ghelman says. "Our goal is to use cutting-edge technology to achieve a successful web presence, one that we believe will exceed both your and your visitors' expectations." Also, he says, the technology used to code a site is extremely important. "The World Wide Web is changing," he says. "In building sites, we use website standards that combine XHTML and CSS technology - the cutting edge of website development." Sites built using these web standards, he says, translate into greater accessibility for browsers, higher search-engine visibility and faster downloading. The iNet Group can also re-code current sites to comply with these standards, Ghelman says. "Give us a call with a brief description of your company, site expectations and other pertinent details for a no obligation initial consultation and estimate," he says. "You'll find our prices competitive." Life in the City BY BARI AUERBACH ‘Signs of the Times’ There are a lot of different signs around town, but wouldn’t it be great if the city could add some really informative and helpful ones like these: Cop Hiding Around Corner: This sign would definitely get motorists to drive on their best behavior – and just think how much money this warning could help the city save on salaries for motor patrol officers and paper for printing tickets! Very Long Wait Ahead: If these signs were posted at places like pharmacies, phone stores, doctors’ offices and the I-95 exit to Aventura at rush hour, we could all be prepared to pack survival kits with books to read, snacks, games for the kids and a pillow for sleeping comfortably until it’s your turn to be “next in line.” Caution: You Never Know Who’s Listening: This sign would serve as a helpful reminder that the couple in the booth

behind you could be the ones going through that nasty divorce you’re gossiping about – or it could make you think twice about saying you could do a much better job than your boss just before she comes out of the restroom stall. Stop Texting: The hope is that frequent texters would abide by this sign before they rear-end you. Stroller Crossing: This sign could help make it safer to cross the street with a baby stroller – but at the rate Aventura’s population of young families is growing, it would have to be posted on every corner! Wipe Down, Disinfect, Sterilize and Fumigate the Equipment!! Everyone at the gym who doesn’t want to catch the flu would certainly appreciate this sign – or better yet - a sign on the door that says “Please Stay Home If You’re Sick!” Very Good Signs: Despite the city’s strict ordinances regulating what kind of signs can be posted in Aventura, code enforcement officers would surely waive all fines if everyone posted signs outside their doors declaring, “We Love Living Here!”

AcquaMare Seafood Bar and Grill, bringing "a little bit of Italy to Sunny Isles Beach," recently hosted a networking luncheon for under-45 Young Professionals, who learned the meaning of taste sensations such as "Branzino Del Cile Alla Pancetta" (Chilean Seabass wrapped with pancetta and baked in a light white wine sauce); and Pappardelle Maree e Monte (homemade large fettuccine with shrimps and Porcini mushrooms). AYP chair Michael Yavner of Northern Trust along with AcquaMare proprietor Silvia Ferri and Chef Peter Petazzoni welcomed a great turnout of AYP members to the elegant restaurant featuring a piano bar where guests enjoy great 3x1 Happy Hours from 4 to 7 p.m. and bravissimo performances by talented artists including a soprano opera singer. While leaders from My Netkey, CitiBank, TD Bank, IDEA, IT Doctors and County Line Chiropractic were attempting to pronounce Strudel Di Fontina e Filetto Di Manzo Aioli (Fontina cheese, ternderloin and shredded vegetables wrapped in puff pastry); friends from Where Magazine, Marquis Bank, MultiLingua and Hampton Inn easily translated "deliciouso" into Stuffed Clams Oreganata, Conch and Crab Cake, Tropical Tuna Tartare and Antipasto for two. Teams from the Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort, Workoutmaster, Taft Forward, Colonial Bank, Double Tree Ocean Point, Greater Miami Jewish Federation and Mo's Bagels were especially impressed by Chef Petazzoni illustrious culinary career. Originally from Italy, he was affiliated with the finest hotels and resorts in France, Switzerland and England and was also a renowned international cruise chef. He gained even more "gourmet notoriety" as owner of the acclaimed San Remo on Miami Beach, where his god daughter Silvia Ferri first learned the importance of "good service and appreciation for customer care. " Colleagues from Communications

Workshops, Marksman Security, BankUnited, ASAP Staffing Services, Melnick, Lilienfeld & Castonguay CPAs and attorneys Eric Miller, Elizaveta Samurukova and Mark Lynn had no trouble understanding the universal meaning of "deliciouso" when perusing AcquaMare's expansive menu highlighted by specialties like Cioppino Sylvana (shrimp, salmon, tuna, calamari, baby lobster tail, mussels and clams slowly cooked in alight tomato broth); and Grouper Alla Peter (walnut crusted grouper and mashed potatoes accompanied with Jicama Mango and Fennel slaw in lime sauce). It also didn't take too long for executives from Minuteman Press, the Greater Miami Region of Hadassah, the Office of Dr. Richard Galitz and Bloomgarden Goudreau & Rosen to perfect their accents when ordering favorites like Ossobucco con Risotta Alla Milanese (veal shank served with Milanesestyle risotto); and Pollo Valdostana (chicken breast stuffed with ham and fontina cheese in a light white wine sauce). For pasta lovers from DS Xpress, SEO4anyone.com, Berman Chiropractic, The Continental Group, Cemusa and Acqualina Resort & Spa it was really easy to say, "AcquaMare - that's amore!" upon seeing dishes like Penne Alla Tsarena Aleksandra (penne pasta with pancetta and shallots in a pink vodka sauce with caviar); Linguine Allo Scoglio (linguine and shrimps, calamari, baby octopus, clams and mussels in a tomato pink sauce); and Lasagne Alla Bolognese (no translation necessary). From pasta and foccacia made daily on the premises - to appetizers and entrees with an "authentic Italian touch" topped off with the most amazing desert pastries, AYP members concurred Aquamare Seafood Bar and Grill truly is bringing a little bit of Italy close to home in Sunny Isles Beach at 18090 Collins Avenue in front of the Trump International. Open daily from 4 p.m. to 11: 30 p.m. Lunch is served on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For reservations, phone: 305-9336956 or visit acquamarerestaurant.com

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER

STOPPING THE TRAIN Q: Are men physically able to stop when already engaged in sexual intercourse? If so, why do they use that excuse to keep going when asked to stop? A: Very good question. There comes a point during intercourse when a man can’t stop himself. If a freight train were crashing into the room, he still could not halt ejaculation. Learning to recognize the moment right before he gets to that point is the key to ending premature ejaculation. If, when he approaches that precipice, he calms himself down a little, he can regain control. Some men are afraid that if they do stop from going over the edge they’ll lose their erection and won’t be able to reach the goal of having an orgasm. They have to be taught that it’s a baseless fear and if they are going to become good lovers they have to learn to gain as much control as possible. Q: Is it normal to not have an orgasm every time you have sex? I have been involved in a sexual relationship for two

years and have only had four orgasms. (I am a 19-year-old female). A: My guess as to what is happening here is that except for those four times, the two of you normally don’t engage in enough foreplay to get you sufficiently aroused to have an orgasm during intercourse. What you have to do is prolong foreplay to the point of being almost ready for an orgasm and then start intercourse, or, if that doesn’t work, continue foreplay until you do have an orgasm. Many women can’t have an orgasm from intercourse alone, and that’s all right as long as they achieve sexual satisfaction in another way. Q: Do you believe being provocative is the best/only way to really get people’s attention? A: If you are speaking about women who dress in short skirts or wear low-cut blouses because they believe that is the only way they are going to get the attention of men, I have to strongly disagree. I’m all for flirting, which can be provocative, but you can flirt by showing off your intellectual ability without necessarily being overtly sexual. When a woman feels that the only way to gt men to pay attention to her is to bare her body, she’s going to get a lot of the wrong type of attention from men who are only interested in sex and have no desire to form a relationship with her. That’s not the type of attention she should be looking for.

Founders of Mount Sinai host 54th Annual Ball Dr. Donald L. and Marion Golden, Founders Ball Honorees The Founders of Mount Sinai recently experienced the sensuous rhythm of one of the world's most romantic dances during the group's 54th Annual Ball. With Tango Argentina ! as their theme, the Founders transformed the Hotel InterContinental ballroom into a colorful representation of the legendary South American city. Michael M. Adler, chairman of the Board of Trustees, lead the Founders in a beautiful tribute to Dr.

Donald L. and Marion Golden, the evening's honorees, in recognition of the family's generous support of Mount Sinai. The hospital also has paid tribute to the Goldens by naming its new medical office building in honor of Dr. Golden and his family. Guests were welcomed to the ball by Mark H. Hildebrandt, president of Mount Sinai Medical Center Foundation, who installed new Founders, and paid tribute to Leonard A. Wien, Jr., outgoing Founders pres-

ident. The evening also included a live auction of an exquisite white gold tanzanite and diamond necklace and ring, compliments of Luis Felipe Perez, of Lucky Star Diamonds. Established in 1954, the Founders Club is dedicated to generating philanthropic support to help Mount Sinai further its mission as a private not-for-profit teaching hospital. With all the turmoil going on around us today it is very common to hear people respond to their situation with the phrase, "under the circumstances." usome of those circumstances are real, others assumed or perceived. it is equally difficult to deal with the perceived as with the real. sometimes the perceived, when not dealt with, become bigger than the real. The psalmist, david, faced many of those same circumstances. some were real, some perceived. he addressed them all when writing psalm 86. his prayer to god was rather simple: "hear, o lord, and answer me, for i am poor and needy. guard my life, save your servant, have mercy on me and bring joy back into my life." His reference to being poor and needy was not in the context of financially or materially because he was the king of israel. the king of any nation is usually well off in those areas. david viewed himself as poor and in need of god's attention and intervention in his circumsatances. he felt threatened, helpless and unhappy. he was bogged down under his circumstances. Rather than entertain himself with a pity-party or resort to some narcotic relief he reviewed his source of confidence. he called on god with the assurance that god is forgiving and good, abounding in love (not to everyone, but only to those who trust in him and call upon him). he was certain that god would not only hear him, but answer him in his day of trouble. because he

revered god, saying, "among the 'gods' there is none like you, no deeds can compare with yours because you are great and do marvelous things; you alone are god." david knew where to turn under the circumstances. After carefully considering his circumstances and his source of confidence there was only one commitment to make. "teach me your way, o lord, and i will live in the light of your truth." he desired to have an undivided heart so he would not be torn between trying to solve all his problems or allowing god to guide him into a perfect resolution. Notice that he was not selfish in his request. he did not seek god's attention in order to continue on in life immune from circumstances. he wanted to know god's way, walk in it, have an undivided heart first and foremeost to revere god's name and to praise him with all his heart. he recognized the importance of calling on god under the circumstances. It is obvious that god heard and answered his request from the following lines; "you have delivered me from the depths of the grave." when he thought life was not worth living he trusted god. after re-affirming his confidence in god he committed himself to god's guidance and received the relief necessary to survive under the circumstances. How do we know it worked? the last line reads,"o lord, you havehelped me and comforted me" under the circumstances. if you are struggling with yur situation and feel like you are buried in your circumstances, do as david did! Do not settle BY PATRICIA C. FRANK Happiness and comfort are your birthright. You are entitled to be happy and comfortable. You are entitled to feel this way, not just sometimes, but all the time. Many people learn it late in life and some people never learn it at all. They die without fully experiencing the sweetness of life. Everyone can find numerous reasons to be unhappy. When you eliminate one source of stress or unhappiness, another one seems to pops up. These are the everyday challenges that you face and resolve. But, there are some things that are hidden deep in your subconscious and are more difficult to face and resolve. You may be someone who spends their whole life trying to make others happy so that you can be happy yourself. When you are young your happiness and comfort are dependent on someone else. As you grow you learn that certain things feel good. You also learn that you may not always have these things. Someone else decides how happy you are allowed to be. The process of socialization takes an additional toll. You learn that cer-

Page 19

SUMMER SWIMWEAR SALE tain actions and feelings have to be suppressed. You learn not to upset your parents or teachers. You learn that sometimes in order to feel good you have to make others feel good first. This is a survival technique. However, it can alter your personality in several ways. If you have a parent who is angry and has temper tantrums, you will learn that in order to feel calm yourself you have to try to calm the parent. You may resent them and be angry with them for causing the storm and for causing uncomfortable feelings inside of you. You may even perpetuate the situation by unconsciously choosing a partner that is similar. The next time something happens that makes you feel unhappy, take time to analyze it. Has it happened before? Do you always just accept it as part of your life or the way things are? How can you eliminate this source of your unhappiness? You do not have to live with it or bear it. You do not have to accept it. It is not selfish to choose your own happiness. Do not accept less than the best for yourself because it means that you are less and do not deserve the best. Do not settle for a life that is not happy, fulfilling and joyful for YOU Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

Some tips on avoiding the latest cyber-scams

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY It turns out that Florida is now No. 3 in the country for complaints about cyberscams. We’re also one of the top states for cyber-scammers according to the latest national computer fraud figures. If you have an email account on your home or office computer, you know it doesn’t take long to be choked by all the bogus offers and special deals. By using emails from banks and credit card companies, scammers are targeting consumers, asking them to verify account information. Secret Service agent Matt Eddins, a cyber-crime investigator, said it’s a very big problem that continues to grow. Agent Eddins said many of the latest scams begin with the following statements: “There’s a problem with your account. We’re doing an

audit to make sure everything is good, so tell us again your account number.” In 2008, cyber-scam victims lost more than $264 million, averaging about $931 in each scam. That’s up some $25 million from 2007. The top scams include ones that arise from undelivered products, Internet auction fraud and credit card identity theft. The criminals are getting more and more tech savvy, learning how to take it to the next step. The feds also are turning it up a notch, however. They’re telling consumers how to avoid getting ripped off through a series of computer-fraud warning videos, which can be found online at <www.onguardonline.gov/>. If you receive an email or anything asking for personal identifiers, Eddins recommends that you seriously consider whether it could be a scam. Blackberry and iPhone users also should remember to take security measures before submitting any personal banking or credit card information. Watch Al Sunshine’s “4 Your Money” reports Monday-Friday beginning at noon. You may find Al’s blog at <cbs4.com/4yourmoney>.

BY DAVID GEDANSKY Costly gasoline, an array of new airline charges, cruise ship fuel supplement fees – none of these signs of difficult economic times stopped Americans from traveling in 2008. However, may be having an effect on travel choices during 2009, as travelers spend their dollars more carefully. Here are some of the current trends: More tourism in smaller cities. U.S. cities such as Fort Myers, Fla.; Tucson, Ariz.; and Portland, Ore., are seeing double-digit percentage increases in tourism as compared to 2008. This may be because more Americans are choosing to take weekend trips a little closer to home, and because they are searching out alternatives to pricey major cities. Families focus on quality time. Families are interested in vacations that focus on quality time together rather than high-priced pursuits. One example is a vacation centered on a national park, rather than a theme park. However, if you are the vacation planner for your family, remember that attractive pricing is now available for many theme park vacation packages, as well as cruises and tours. Everything’s relative. Some travelers aren’t skimping on transportation costs

because they save on lodging by bunking with relatives. This works especially well if you happen to have a relative who resides in a popular beach, resort or mountain community. But, visiting a relative just about anywhere can be a great experience: you’ll be staying with someone who knows the area well and can introduce you to all there is to see and do. Yet, hotel rates have rarely been as attractive as they are now. While many travelers choose to economize by staying in the U.S., there are plentiful deals available on international travel, too. In fact, airfares to dream vacation hotspots like Australia have never been lower. Plus, the value of the dollar has actually gained ground against most major world currencies – including the euro and pound – over the last year. If you don’t already have a passport, consider obtaining one so that you’ll be ready to take advantage of international vacation bargains. Your travel professional can provide advice on obtaining a passport (and using it!). VW Routan is derived from Chrysler Town & Country Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS Volkswagen’s new 2009 Routan is a chip off the old Chrysler block. It’s VW’s first minivan since the ill-fated EuroVan six years ago and is derived from Chrysler’s Town & Country vehicle, with some notable adaptations — it has a different interior, a Volkswagen exterior and a stiffer suspension. The seven-passenger Routan should appeal to American families, even though it lacks some of the features offered in the Town & Country. For example, the popular Stow ’n Go and Swivel ’n Go seating have been eliminated in the Routan because VW designers opted to make them plusher and more comfortable; thus they don’t fit into the floorboard storage areas. However, the third-row seats do fold into the floor, and the second-row seats can be

removed to create a flat load floor and good hauling space. The Routan is offered in three models — S starting at $24,700, SE at $29,600 and SEL at $33,200 — with two engine choices, both from Chrysler: a 197 hp, 3.8-liter V-6 and a 253 hp, 4.0liter V-6. The 3.8 engine (16/23 mpg) provides a nice urban driving experience, while the 4.0 engine (17/25 mpg) has a bit more power and is better suited for highway driving. Both engines are mated to a standard six-speed automatic transmission. The Routan is easily identified as a Volkswagen by the stylized front grille and large VW logo, and other exterior treatments. The interior is comfortable and detailed, with quality materials, beautiful textures and rich colors. And there are many functional features, including a conversation mirror, rear seat entertainment system with two nine-inch screens for second and third row passengers, touch screen navigation with 30 GB JoyBox Multi-Media Entertainment system, dual power sliding doors with power windows, power fold third-row seating and 13 cup hold-

ers. Remote keyless entry with remote vehicle start system is an option, and there are standard 12V power outlets and an available 115V AC outlet for powering up phones, MP3 players and game consoles. Routan also comes with many safety features, including standard front and side curtain airbags. Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) — standard on all 2009 Volkswagens — and

hydraulic brake assist add an extra level of safety to the Routan. Also available are High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights for improved visibility and an ultrasonic rear-park assist.

Win ‘heavy weight’ prizes at Olympia Gym’s Parkinson’s charity event BY BARI AUERBACH Imagine relaxing by the pool at the Westin Diplomat ; enjoying a prime steak at Morton’s; being pampered with a massage and spa treatments; and wearing hot new fitness fashions while working out with an expert personal trainer…and the best part is – it can all be absolutely free! These are just some of the great raffle prizes valued at over $8,500 that will be up for grabs when Olympia Gym in Aventura hosts a Parkinson’s charity event featuring three popular fitness modalities: Spinning, Body Forging and Latin dance. On Saturday, June 13 the community is invited to help support the University of Miami Parkinson’s Foundation by participating in a 90-minute spin-a-thon led by renowned instructor Billy G. (8:30 a.m.-10 a.m.), followed by a power yoga-like Body Forging class with founder Kevin Philion (10:15 a.m.-11:15 a.m.) and a high-energy Latin dance lab with “Mr. Fitness” champion Silk Manning (11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.). “We've had a wonderful response from local businesses donating products, goods, and services to be raffled off throughout the event,” said coordinator Roy Roden. “A ten dollar donation will entitle everyone to food and drinks courtesy of generous sponsors including Whole Foods Market…We’ll be selling raffle tickets for all the great prizes that will be drawn during the three fitness events.” ($5 for one ticket; $10 for three; $20 for eight). If you sometimes find it hard to work up the energy to workout, just looking at all the fantastic raffle prizes donated by

charity event sponsors should help get you motivated: *Free 2 day/1 night stay at the Westin Diplomat plus donations and/or gift certificates from premier area restaurants and markets including: Granny Feel Good’s, Soup Man, Pilar, Juice & Java, Bella Luna, Pizza Roma, Mama Mia, Bulldog Bar-b-que, Morton’s, Cool Café, Refuel at Olympia , Kosher Kingdom and Whole Foods Market. *Complimentary personal services from American Laser Center, Danny Mizrahi salon, Sir Barbet Spa, The Changing Room, Magic Tan Salon, Massage Envy, Planet Beach, G&G Holistic, Maria Chuy Salon, Adriel Jordan, Dr. G. laser hair removal, Face & Body Solutions, Dan the Massage Man and Aventura Dermatology & Cosmetic Center. *Coveted “free stuff” from premier retailers including: Cool J’s, Runners Depot, City Bikes, Eye Optics, Kassis, Lululemon, Lucy and Jane Bash. Plus free classes at Olympia Gym to experience Power Plate and Pilates as well as free personal training sessions with expert Olympia trainers. But you can’t win if you don’t spin with Billy G.; let Kevin Philion show you how Body Forging leaves “no place for fat to hide”; or partner with Silk Manning for a Latin Dance lab that even Dancing With the Stars judges would give ten’s to (plus extra points for supporting research to cure Parkinson’s disease). For more event information, phone: Olympia Fitness Center located in Aventura’s Promenade Shops 305-932-3500.
