North Dade Justice Center celebrates 52nd ‘Law Day’ featuring Jeffrey H. Sloman, former U.S. Attorney BY BARI AUERBACH

usiness and community leaders recently collaborated with judges from the North Dade Justice Center to present the 52nd Law Day celebration featuring guest speaker Jeffrey H. Sloman, former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. The theme of Law Day 2010 was "Law in the 21st Century: Enduring Traditions, Emerging Challenges," held in conjunction with "Law Week" - observed nationally every year in May to help promote a greater understanding of the American justice system and commemorate "a commitment to the rule of law enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution." Overseeing Law Day 2010 were Associate Administrative Judge Linda Singer Stein, Judge Myriam Lehr, Judge Lisa Walsh, Judge Caryn Schwartz, Judge Sheldon Schwartz and Judge Eric Hendon. Chief Judge Joel Brown noted, "Thanks to all of the judges and their staff here at the North Dade Justice Center for organizing Law Day - a long-standing tradition. It's important to recognize the importance of the legal system - truly the foundation of our country. We're a nation of laws and for that to remain, we need a solid legal system that will protect everyone's individual rights." The Law Day event commenced with an invocation by North Miami Mayor Andre Pierre; the City of Miami Gardens Honor Guard presentation; Joshua Grosso of Joanie Edwards Little Theater School of Performing Arts singing the National Anthem; and the Pledge of Allegiance led by the Bailiffs of the North Dade Justice Center. Many students attending the Law Day event were especially enlightened by remarks made by Sloman, who spoke about rewards of public service. "Serving as U.S. Attorney has been the thrill of a lifetime," Sloman said. "For the young people here,

A Remarkable Supreme Court Appointment

Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS I present an inconceivable scenario when considering our hostile political environment on Supreme Court appointments. A conservative Quaker Republican President appoints a liberal Jewish Democrat to the Supreme Court, with the unanimous voice vote approval of the Republican controlled Senate. It actually happened. In 1932, President Herbert Hoover appointed Benjamin Cardozo, a Sephardic Jew with Portuguese ancestors, to the Supreme Court to succeed retiring Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. Clarence Dill, Democratic Senator from Washington, stated that Hoover’s appointment of Cardozo was “the finest act of his career as President.” Cardozo’s appointment “has been referred to as one of the few Supreme Court appointments in history not motivated by partisanship or politics, but strictly

based on the nominee’s contribution to law.” Consider the following: Cardozo was elected as a Democrat to the New York Supreme Court, elevated to the Court of Appeals and later Chief Judge of that court. In an era of widespread antiSemitism, Cardozo was the second person of Jewish descent, after Louis Brandeis, to be appointed and to serve together with a third New Yorker (Stone). Associate Justice James McReynolds, a notorious anti-Semite, urged Hoover not to appoint another Jew to the Court. The deans of the Harvard, Yale, Columbia and Chicago law schools urged Hoover to appoint Cardozo. Associate Justice Harlan Fiske Stone offered to resign to make room for Cardozo, if Hoover was going to appoint someone else. Cardozo will always be remembered for his landmark decisions in negligence and contract law, as well as his philosophy, vivid prose style and his self effacing modesty. Brandeis, Cardozo and Stone, referred to as the Three Musketeers, were considered to be the liberal faction on the Supreme Court. Cardozo is regarded by most legal scholars as one of the ten greatest legal minds in American History.

Preparing for a Trip

Patricia C.Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Life is a journey. Like all journeys you have to prepare for the trip so that you have what you need when you arrive. You have to prepare for what you might need along the way, at the various stages or stops you will encounter. Some people are better at preparing for the journey than others. They are better able to anticipate their needs. They can see the situation clearly. They are able to keep their eye on the future and the present at the same time. This skill is not automatic but it should be cultivated. Your happiness and success depends upon it. Sadly, many people arrive at a place and then find out that they do not have what they need to cope and to succeed and be happy. College, employment and retirement are good examples of life - changing events and challenges. Some people can compensate instantly for what’s missing. They are able to

improvise. Some people however, lack this creative ability. They lack the knowledge, skills and imagination that is necessary. They lack insight. They also lack the flexibility to create something out of nothing. They do not know how to salvage a situation. If you lack creativity and flexibility and the ability to improvise, it is imperative that you prepare yourself for the future by anticipating what it will be like in great detail. What will you do at college or at the new job? How will you fill your time when you retire? If you look ahead and visualize the various scenarios, then you can take steps to acquire the qualities you will need to adapt to them. Do not go into new situations unprepared. Do not just show up and trust to luck. You will need to develop self-esteem, self-confidence, the ability to concentrate and the ability to be persistent and consistent. You will need to have a good disposition. If you prepare for these life - changing events you will increase the probability that you will enjoy them, get the most out of them and thrive.

Gulfstream Village

Denise Rubin REAL ESTATE Whenever I show a property in Aventura, I boast about its convenient location. How close it is to the Aventura Mall, The Fairmont Turnberry Isle golf course, and now I have added “Gulfstream” to the top of the list. The fabulous Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino and The Village at Gulfstream Park are becoming the new places to go… to see and be seen. In the past, Gulfstream Park was for thoroughbred horse racing. Although I sold homes in nearby Aventura Lakes to some jockeys, it never overwhelmed me. Long ago, the Broward County Fair was held there, and as I sat on top of the ferris wheel looking over my Island Way home in Aventura and the rest of the county, I thought, “What a fun neighbor!” Little did I know. The fun has just begun with large stores like Crate and Barrel to The Container Store, to small wonderful boutiques of all types. There are dining spots and restaurants galore. My favorite is Three Forks, although I had a marvelous

Mother’s Day brunch at Brio and enjoy Texas de Brazil….the restaurant where the food never ends! The list and choices go on and on. I can even take “Bentley’, my teacup yorkie, with me, as many of the restaurants offer outdoor dining. How lucky are we to have a SoBestyle club in our own backyard! I recently had the privilege to meet and greet the owner of MI-VI, Gerry Kelly, and have a tour of the new restaurant and club. I was wowed by the ambiance and Kelly’s enthusiasm. He is bringing South Beach nightlife-glam to the Hallandale BeachAventura area and we sure do need it! A few weeks later, the Aventura Marketing Council had a lunch there and the accommodations and dining experience exceeded my expectations. I also learned that Kelly has been involved with the most successful clubs in South Beach and has played host to the biggest celebrities. He has hosted some of the largest corporate events and benefits held in Florida. Now he is our neighbor and will bring the grandeur our way. So visit Gulfstream Park and The Village at Gulfstream Park…… I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Call Denise Rubin at 305-409-0019 and visit www.deniserubin.com for listings and virtual tours.

VIEWPOINT Academic Diversity on the Supreme Court

America’s Crusade Against Workers

BY DONALD KAUL

BY WILLIAM A. COLLINS

I don't think President Obama should have nominated Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court. Don't get me wrong; It's not that I think she's too conservative. That would be the granola/Birkenstock wing of the Democratic Party. And it's certainly not because I think she's too liberal. That would be nuts. I'm against her because she went to Harvard. Do you realize that if she is confirmed, everybody on the Supreme Court will be a product of either Harvard or Yale? All nine of them. That's ridiculous. I know, they're both supposed to be really good schools but, really, they're not that good. To those who think they are I have but two words: George Bush. He graduated from Yale and got an MBA from Harvard. If that's an example of the kind of minds those institutions of higher learning turn out, I'd rather take my chances with a graduate from the Oelwein (Iowa) School of Law and Storm Door Technology. And what about Michigan, Wisconsin, Cal-Berkeley, Duke, or Texas? You couldn't find a graduate of one of those places who is fit to sit on our highest court? There are dozens of good law schools in this country. Why fill the Supreme Court with graduates of only two of them? It's institutional nepotism, is what it is. Obama went to Harvard and the three presidents before him all went to Yale. They think you shouldn't be on the Court unless you know the secret Yale-Harvard handshake. I don't. I believe in diversity. Not ethnic diversity so much; I really don't care much whether a justice is of Hispanic, Italian, or Latvian pedigree. I don't even care much about their religion, so long as they don't take it too seriously. (It is the "deeply religious" one must avoid at all costs. Whatever the religion--Muslim, Catholic, Protestant, or Jewish--its deeply religious practitioners would as soon burn you at the stake as look at you.) No, what I'm talking about is intellectu-

al diversity. I'd like to see a Court whose members offer differing perspectives (four of the current members, counting Kagan, grew up in New York City), who represent various philosophical universes. What would be wrong with having an atheist on the Court, or at least an agnostic? I think he or she would be at least as qualified to judge issues of the separation of church and state as people who grew up religious. Same with abortion. Why leave the question to a Court whose majority is instructed by their church that abortion is murder? And don't tell me that intellectual diversity doesn't make any difference, because all the justices should be doing is executing the text of the Constitution without regard to their personal views. Strict constructionists, they call themselves. Strict constructionists, my foot: There's no such thing, certainly not among the gang who stepped into the Florida election in 2000 and handed victory to George Bush in a decision so blatantly partisan that they said it shouldn't be used as precedent. Everybody is a judicial activist; it's just a question of which way their activism rolls. If I were picking a Supreme Court nominee I'd choose one who: Went to a good school west of the Hudson River. Had, at some time in his or her life, worked for tips. It is a great experience for learning about human nature. Possessed a sense of humor. I don't expect a justice to do standup, mind you, but it would be nice to have one with a sense of irony. Was a skeptic, but not a cynic. The former questions everything; the latter rejects it out of hand. Would under no circumstances sign an opinion, then say it should not be used as precedent. Setting precedent is what the Supreme Court does. It's why it exists. Having said all of that, I'd probably vote for Kagan, were I a senator. She's the best we can get, given the system we've got.

Rights at work, Leave on the tide, Without a union At our side. There's a well-established ritual in Washington governing workers' rights. When Republicans are in charge, they pursue a scorched-earth policy. This includes placing anti-union activists in charge of the Labor Department and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), failing to enforce existing restraints on employer abuse, and seeking to unravel labor laws first enacted during the Depression. Then when the Democrats get back in they tend to take labor for granted, getting by with as little correction of this bossworker imbalance as they can get away with. Like the Republicans, they too seek to avoid alienating generous big donors. This sort of minimalist improvement is going on right now. Happily, there are some good new interim NLRB appointees and some added staff at the Labor Department. Unfortunately at this rate they will never catch up. Democrats are unlikely to even call for a vote on the labor movement's top priority-a bill to strengthen an employee's right to unionize. Republicans have made plain that the Employee Free Choice Act is at the top of their kill list, more important even than health care or Wall Street reform. Present law is skewed heavily against workers trying to organize and the GOP wants to keep it that way. And on this issue, having pretty much blown the public relations battles over health care and finance, Republicans finally have the press on their side. Luckily for them, newspaper, TV, and magazine owners have no use for unions either. They just raise costs. Consequently, the plight of mistreated workers gets little of the sympathetic media coverage that mistreated patients or investors enjoy. Toyota can close its only unionized plant in the U.S., but its anti-

union practices are never examined. Neither is that pandemic economic virus of misclassifying employees as private contractors. Countless employers by now have discovered that they can get away with such cheating, and thereby avoid paying worker's compensation, unemployment, and Social Security taxes. It's a great scam. Nor will you read or hear much about the giant employee underclass who toil so diligently and shamefully to keep prices down for you and me. Take farm workers. They aren't even covered by our minimum wage. Or home health aides or many restaurant workers. No paid sick days for them. They're even rightly afraid to report injuries. Gradually this callous treatment of lower-wage classes climbs up the economic ladder. By now plenty of middle-class workers, folks who would never support a union, have also found themselves mistreated. Layoffs and rule changes can strike quite suddenly. Without a union or government bulwark to protect them, even the highestlevel employees can be treated like dirt. For better or worse, the United States is far from alone in this anti-union crusade. Many nations, frequently our best Latin and Asian allies, are indeed worse. Labor leaders there, and the journalists who report on them, are often murdered. Fortunately, U.S. employers have pretty much forsaken that technique. Who needs it after all, when the law is so stacked on your side? But even without new laws, the government could--if it chose--wield the power to influence employer practices by scrutinizing the behavior of its own suppliers and service contractors. Pressure there could alter the tone of management generally, and slow the speedy erosion of employment quality that is now common and growing in our republic. --

Holy Mole…Guacamole Shari Lynn Rothstein-Kramer EAT THIS... DRINK THAT

I love guacamole. With so many Mexican restaurants coming into the South Florida dining scene lately, it seems as if everyone is taking this Mexican staple and interpreting it to suit their needs. It’s pretty easy to get a wide variety of designer guacamole either pre-made, made tableside, made to order or as I like to call it “designer guac” – and there’s a big swing in the quality, consistency, and size from place to place. The beauty (in my opinion) of real guacamole is the true taste of a fresh avocado. Creamy, rich…it satisfies the need for “fat” that almost every single person in the world craves. (The good part is that avocado fat is good fat – not like French fry or hamburger fat, which also tastes amazing, it’s just not so good for you). So, when that avocado flavor shines through, and the other ingredients in the mix are there for “support”, rest assured, that is when the dip is at its best. So, with that said, let’s chat about my quest for the best. Starting close to home, we have Cantina Laredo. They offer a small bowl of warm chips with two spicy salsas gratis. Love that. “Top Shelf” Guacamole is $9.49 and is loaded with stuff. Spices, tomatoes, jalapeños (and it does pack a punch so those who are spice-phobic – speak early or prepare to suffer!) If you have a good server, he/she makes it quite fun to watch! I give it an 8. Though not as close to home, Rosa Mexicana down in Mary Brickell Village (actually the restaurant originally hails from NYC at 1st Ave. and 51st Street) has been serving up tableside guac since 1984. The portion is fine (single is $14; a double is $28) and they only add jalapeño, tomato, onion, and cilantro to the avocado. After one of their killer margaritas, you can’t get enough of it into your body! It’s part of a gluten free menu, which is just an added perk for those who can’t eat gluten. If you feel like travelling all the way up to Boca Raton, a must-try Is Rocco’s Tacos, located in the Boca Center. Again,

served tableside, they ask you how spicy (or not) you want it. The potion is large and it is really tasty. Served with chips it runs $12, but honestly, I do not mind paying for this one – it is by far, my favorite. I feel like the molcajete never runs dry. There is also a great scene for single people, couples, and folks who like to have fun! Now, let’s venture down South. I have two. The first is El Scorpion (where the old Tuscan Steak) Opened by restaurateur extraordinaire Jeffrey Choderow’s son, Zach, this place seem to miss the mark for me. I can’t put my finger on it – oh, maybe it is because the guacamole they call “Elvis” is infused with lime, garlic and bacon. (It’s served with fried Plantain chips). Or the Chipotle. Or the roasted garlic and basil. La Verdad is the closest to, well, the truth and I guess I am just a purist at heart. And now let’s head to Mercadito, a mid-town newcomer with what I consider a great vibe and incredible artisanal cocktails that are predominantly tequila, Mezcal, and Herradura based). The menu is lovely and made for sharing. But here are my two warnings: most everything is SPICY, including the guacamole, which is loaded with jalapenos or chipotle or habanera or Serrano chiles. I am a bit on the wimpy side, but hello! – this one almost killed me. It is Speed-scratch made, meaning, they jump start the regular mix and then add various ingredients depending on what you order from the guac bar. There are six types available (again, being a purist, I do not see the need for apples, pineapple, mole, and other random ingredients – but that’s just me. They are served one 8.5 / two 11.5 / three 13.5 and that’s okay, but the portions are tiny. (Chips however, are delish!) I would recommend trying it – you just need to know what you are getting into before going. Naturally, the best and most cost-effective guacamole comes from your own kitchen. I love to cook and if you are a fan, here’s a fool-proof recipe for success: Take two has avocados, dice some tomato (or lazy man’s way, just add salsa), sprinkle with salt, pepper, some lime and a pinch of garlic if you choose – mash – eat it up – yum! We stand prepared to battle oil spill threat FWC REPORT

BY RODNEY BARRETO

Chairman, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission

We often take for granted all the things that make our life easy until something happens to make us sit up and take notice. This happened in late April, when the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico brought us all to attention. So far, Florida’s fish and wildlife remain safe from the impact of oil coming ashore, and we hope for the best. The longer that oil stays out at sea, the better it is for our estuaries and marshes where the fish and wildlife spawn and nest. We are still the Fishing Capital of the World. It took thousands of years for folks to realize the thick, tar-like substance bubbling up out of the earth might have some use in our lives. That discovery fueled a centuries of new inventions and technology to enable people to live longer and in comfort. Part of the price was a contaminated environment. We are now a society dependent upon that petroleum, but with that dependence comes the certainty that we must take responsibility for any consequences. It is true that BP leads the effort to contain and clean up the spill from its wellhead, but others have stepped forth to assist as well. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is working closely with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the lead agency in the state for responding to the oil spill. Both the FWC and DEP are involved in gathering pre-assessment data, along with many other agencies, such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Coast Guard

and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. At the FWC, we stand ready to minimize harm to wildlife affected by the oil spill, if oil should come ashore. The FWC is involved in the strategic planning that will attempt to secure the spill to prevent damage to Florida and its outstanding resources. Our scientists are mapping highpriority fish and wildlife habitats to help focus protective measures, and they are conducting biological assessments to establish a baseline for measuring the severity of potential harm to fish and wildlife. Volunteers immediately began calling the FWC and other agencies to find out how they could help when news broke that the oil could reach Florida. I am encouraged by this outpouring of support, and the FWC thanks all those who make wildlife a priority. However, this crisis situation differs from other disasters we’ve faced in Florida, from hurricanes and flooding to droughts and fires. If an oiled fish washes ashore or wildlife covered in oil appears distressed, some of us will be tempted to rush out and rescue the animal. However, that will not be the best course of action for either the wildlife or the Good Samaritan. This crisis involves hazardous materials that need to be handled by properly trained personnel for the safety of you and for the survival of the wildlife you think you might be saving. Attempting to rescue wildlife distressed by the oil could further distress the animal. Your presence could have the opposite of the intended effect. Distressed wildlife can be dangerous as they fight to survive. You also are putting yourself at risk by touching the oil. Nobody wins in this situation, and while our well-intentioned actions may seem helpful, they are not.

It is best to let the trained professionals take over, and there are plenty of them and even more coming on board to receive the necessary training to assist. All oil-contaminated wildlife will be handled by trained workers. As we go through the long process of preparing, protecting and then cleaning up any potential oil residue that reaches our shores, there will be plenty of opportunities to assist. Volunteer Florida is an active participant in the oil spill response and encourages those who want to assist to get involved locally through affiliated prelandfall beach cleanups, fundraising and assisting with the needs of all the organizations involved in the response. Remember all beach cleanups should come through organized efforts. For more

information on how to help, visit <www.volunteerfloridadisaster.org>. We’re all in this together. The FWC will do everything possible to protect Florida’s fish and wildlife, and that’s why I’ve called for an emergency meeting with our agency’s staff. This meeting is unprecedented, but so is the oil spill that could possibly affect our natural resources. The meeting will be May 19 at 10 a.m. at Tradewinds Resort in St. Pete Beach. Visit <MyFWC.com>, <http://www.myfwc.com/> for more information. Florida’s fish and wildlife have the very best resources working for their protection and survival. It’s a growing market, and we’re all being tempted to jump in and sign up. But are the dazzling numbers of new digital devices melting down the cellular and wireless networks and leaving the rest of us with dropped calls and poor service? Smart phones, digital work pads, and personal digital assistants are so popular now that this year alone some 295 million were sold worldwide during the first quarter. Each one has its own telephone number or network ID. Monthly cellular charges featuring unlimited data can add up to more than a $1,000 a year for the latest high-speed digital service. An FIU employee told me she isn’t a happy customer because of her poor service. “I don’t think I’m getting my money’s worth,” she said. “I definitely think I’m paying for more than what I’m getting here.” She has discovered that despite all the hype about high speed service, she still has trouble using her phone to just make a simple phone call or to use the Internet. “It’s a little frustrating basically when I try to connect,” she said. “I just hit connect and work on something else. I check on my connection, and when I’m done I may get what I’m looking for.” So, does she think she’s getting the fast speeds she’s paying for? The FIU worker sighs. “I don’t think so. But again, I think everybody’s in the same boat.” So what’s the problem? Some network researchers say the growing popularity of wireless computers, smart phones and digital assistants is outstripping the ability of network providers to keep up with them all. We spoke with an FIU engineering professor who has studied networks for several decades now. She knows about the impact of all the new gadgets hitting the market today. “It slows down the network,” she said. “It’s called network congestion.” You can see it and check it out yourself. It turns out there are now several network speed testing apps available for your computer and smart phone. The best thing

about them is that they are free. For several months, I have been measuring network connections around South Florida. In some cases, they’ve been pretty good. But I also found some connections are so slow, it looked like I was trying to surf the net more than 20 years ago. A Miami computer specialist was very surprised when I showed him the cellular data speed tests I’ve been getting from around South Florida. He thought they looked pretty slow and said, “Wow that was way back in the ’80s. I would say early ’80s, based on what you’re showing me.” I showed my findings to another specialist, a networking expert from Florida International University. She explained, “If there are many people using the same tower at the same time, obviously you may not be getting the speed you want to get. You may get your information, get your data, but not at the speed you desire.” And consumer complaints are now starting to get a lot more attention. Network congestion is getting so severe, the Federal Communications Commission has just released its own free, Smart-Phone Application to track the slowdowns nationally. You measure your network speed and it sends the data directly to the FCC. So what do some of the country’s biggest cellular providers have to say? Not much. Still, most major carriers are now beefing up their networks and spending billions of dollars to keep up with the growing demand. In the meantime, some local users complain about all the poor connections and dropped calls they’re getting on their new Smartphones. One user told me, “The losers are the consumers who are not getting what they paid for, and the winners are the companies selling the services.” Network insiders say the next big trend we will see are claims that the new 4G wireless systems will be a lot faster and fix all our current network problems. But critics note those were the same claims we heard several years ago when the current 3G network was first introduced. And as we know now, it still hasn’t been able to keep up with all the demand — which is only going to get even worse.

2010 BMW 1 Series: A smaller, cheaper Beemer Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The BMW 1 Series was introduced to the U.S. market in mid-2008 as a competitor in the luxury coupe class, but billed as a smaller, less costly Beemer with all the bells and whistles of its bigger siblings. Initially, there was only one model in the lineup, the 135i Coupe with a twin-turbocharged 300 hp. In 2009, BMW expanded the series with the 230 hp 128i and by adding convertible editions for both models, and that lineup continues for 2010. All four models are powered by a 3.0-liter inline-6 engine mated to either a standard six-speed manual or an optional ($1,325) six-speed automatic transmission. BMW makes no bones about the intent of the 1 Series — it was designed to be a serious competitor to the front-wheel-drive Japanese, Korean and American cars in the entry luxury coupe class. And this sporty little car is doing a good job of accomplishing its mission. The 135i Convertible, clocks 0-60 mph in 5.4 sec-

onds and the top speed is electronically limited to 150 mph. For the record, the rear-wheel-drive 1 Series cars are about seven inches shorter overall than the popular BMW 3 Series and the wheelbase is four inches shorter; it’s also 2.7 inches narrower. The 128i Coupe lists for $29,400 and comes with automatic climate control; premium AM/FM/CD audio with auxiliary input jack; a leather-wrapped, multi-function steering wheel; leatherette upholstery; cruise control; power glass sunroof; high-gloss black interior trim; rain-sensing automatic headlights; fog lights, and 205/55HR16 all-season tires on 16-inch alloy wheels. The 135i Coupe has a price tag of $35,850 and adds a twin-turbocharged engine, a firmer sport suspension and high-performance brakes; xenon headlights with adaptive light control; retractable headlight washers; Gray Poplar wood interior trim; and 18-inch alloy rims. The 128i Convertible goes for $34,000 and the 135i Convertible for $40,150. Both have basically the same equipment as their coupe counterparts, except for 17-inch wheels on the 135i. Both come with an automatic cloth folding top that goes up or down in 22 seconds, even at speeds up to 25 mph.

Tips for Stress-Free Honeymoon Planning BY KRISTINA RUNDQUIST

Summer is just around the corner and that means wedding season is about to kick into high gear. Ask any bride—planning for that special day can be stressful—but working with an ASTA travel consultant who specializes in honeymoons means one less thing to worry about. And finding the perfect agent is even easier, thanks to the ‘Find a Travel Agent’ <travelsense.org/agents/> directory on TravelSense.org <travelsense.org/> , where grooms—and brides—can search for a travel agent who specializes in honeymoons or a given destination. “Working with a travel consultant who specializes in honeymoons gives a couple some much-needed breathing room when it comes to planning their wedding and everything it entails,” said ASTA President and Chair Chris Russo. “A professional travel consultant can take care of all the planning details and that gives the happy couple much needed time to focus on what’s important—each other.” Among ASTA travel agents’ tips for planning a honeymoon are: • Begin early and share the planning. To ensure that both parties enjoy the honeymoon, couples should consider making all the decisions together. • Define “Ideal.” If just one person will be doing the planning, he or she shouldn’t assume that because they have always dreamt of honeymooning in a tropical paradise their soon-to-be-spouse shares that dream. Consider these questions as soon as honeymoon talks begin: • What is most important? Suntan lotion, sand and surf or the privacy and seclusion a cozy mountain retreat? • Are you looking to experience new cultures or do you just want to get away from it all? • Are you more interested in going around the corner or around the world? • Do you want to spend more on the wedding or the honeymoon? • What sounds better: a cruise, a package vacation or an all-inclusive resort, something tailored just for you? • Pick your paradise. When it comes to honeymoon planning, most couples try to select the destination first, yet ASTA travel agents suggest a different approach: Unless the dream destination has already been set in stone, couples should first decide what

type of vacation (all-inclusive resort, cruise, adventure vacation, cultural trip) they want and then narrow down their list of destinations accordingly. • Make time for yourselves. Pad the honeymoon schedule with generous amounts of free time. A rushed and overly organized honeymoon might feel too much like the wedding. Instead, plan a few enjoyable activities and leave lots of opportunities to just enjoy each other’s company. • Set a tentative budget. Talk about expectations and priorities from the very beginning and decide what you might splurge on and where you might cut corners. • Splurge on accommodations. No matter what type of vacation package a couple chooses, they will spend an enormous amount of time in their room or cabin. This is not a place to cut corners. • Brides-use your maiden name. Unless a couple is planning on taking a delayed honeymoon, the bride won’t have time to change the name on her passport and driver’s license. She should use her maiden name on visas, airline tickets, etc., so they match as it appears on official documents. • Leave it to a professional. After “I do,” a couple’s two favorite words will be “stress free,” if they opt to work with an expert, such as an ASTA travel consultant who specializes in planning honeymoons. For stress-free travel plans–especially those with multiple steps like a honeymoon–seek out the expert advice of a travel agent. ‘Super smart’ supermarket shopping BY BARI AUERBACH

breast , tilapia or wild salmon are super dinner selections that can be accompanied by brown rice bowls and super easy to make steamed vegetables that aren’t “corrupted” by fattening sauces in the frozen food section. If you’re super hungry and want a meal in minutes, opt for one of the Healthy Choice or Lean Cuisine entrees- but since the sodium content is high, don’t make it a nightly ritual.

If your goal is to lose weight or start eating more nutritious foods, the best place to start is at the supermarket! Here are some breakfast, lunch and dinner items that are super smart to put in your cart… Breakfast Why use the tedious method of cracking and separating eggs when you can get super easy to pour liquid egg whites in convenient to use cartons?! Near the eggs, select Publix stores now sell single serving size multigrain hot cereals that are perfect to eat with an egg white omelet filled with organic spinach found in the frozen food section.. If you’re too rushed to cook in the morning, a pro tein shake is a super fast way to start the day – and now most supermarkets stock jars of whey and soy protein powders next to where energy bars are sold. If you’re going to replace a meal with a shake or energy bar, be sure to read the nutrition label to make sure all the “energy” isn’t coming from too many grams of sugar! Lunch Small cans of tuna in water, sliced turkey breast and veggie burgers are super lunch basics you can mix and match with a few avocado slices, whole wheat bread , multi--grain crackers and ready-made singleserving size containers of salads and mixed fruits avail-

able at most supermarket produce sections. Opt for mustard instead of mayo, use balsamic vinegar and olive oil or flaxseed oil – and instead of soda try a bottle of Arizona diet green tea on ice.. Another super quick healthful lunch can be whipped up at the Whole Foods Market prepared foods section with a rotisserie chicken , ready-made sweet potato (so big you can share it with three friends) and mixed vegetables lightly sauteed in olive oil. Dinner Publix Greenwise boneless, skinless c h i c k e n

Snacks & Desserts Not all yogurts are created equally nutritious – so be sure to read labels so you don’t wind up eating a deceptive snack like certain fruit filled yogurts or granola bars with almost as many grams of sugar as a bag of M&M’s. Sugar-free ice pops, puddings and jello in singleserving cups are super if you’re craving something sweet - and now there are a plethora of portion-controlled 100 calorie snack bags with trail mix, multigrain chips and other crunchy treats. A tablespoon or two of almond butter or a handful of walnuts or peanuts are more super snacks that are high in good EFA’s (essential fatty acids). So put back the potato chips and pick up a sweet potato – trade chicken nuggets for chicken breast – and exchange the Coco Puffs for puffed wheat! Making super smart choices in the supermarket aisle can be the fastest path to becoming super fit!

Bestselling author Meltzer writes a book about heroes Brad Meltzer, author of Heroes for My Son, signs his book at the Palmer Trinity Book Fair.

BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD

South Florida author Brad Meltzer, a New York Times No. 1 bestselling author was the guest speaker for the recent 19th annual Book Fair. Meltzer’s new book is called Heroes for My Son. It’s a book he decided to write on the night his first son was born. “I’m going to write a book that will last his whole life,” he told himself. “I’m going to give it to him and it’s going to be a moment so perfect; it will be a Norman Rockwell moment. It took me a long time to write.” In fact, he spent the better part of a decade researching and writing the book. “It’s not just about great people; these are the moments that make these people great,” he said. He took his time because he wanted to do something to inspire his son and make him think about doing the right thing. “How do I inspire my child to become a great adult?” he said. “Just because I say ‘be good,’ doesn’t he will be good.” Meltzer said the first heroes in our lives are our mothers and fathers. And by following the examples in the book, his son will have an idea of what other good people do that makes them heroes. While many Americans think of sports stars as heroes, Meltzer said he has few sports stars in the book. One who is featured is Roberto Clemente, the baseball player who died when the plane he was on taking food and medicine to Nicaragua after an earthquake crashed. Clemente had filled two planes with food and medicine, but everything was stolen from both planes before the

neediest people got anything. “He decides I’m going on the plane myself so the people who need the help get help,” Meltzer said. He said Clemente is a hero not because of his prowess at sports but because of his humanity. He also featured the Wright Brothers. “Every time the Wright Brothers went out to fly a plane, they would buy enough materials to rebuild several times,” he said. “Every time they went out to fly, they knew they would fail. I love that story.” Meltzer steered away from living heroes because he worried that at any time, the living legends might do something to tarnish their legacy. Politics was another area that he avoided. He does feature some political figures but not because of their politics. Barack Obama is in the book because Meltzer wants his son to see that anything is possible. George H. W. Bush also is featured for his heroic actions during World War II. The book features Rosa Parks, Mr. Rogers, Lou Gehrig, Lucille Ball and Jim Henson among others. “The book is not about fame,” he said. “It’s about how we are all capable every day of our lives. There is only one requirement for a hero — you have to help someone.” Since the night he decided to write a book for his firstborn, two more children have joined the Meltzer household. His plans include a book for his daughter and she is not about to let him forget that promise. Every day now, his 4-year-old daughter checks with him to see if he has finished her book yet. For information on Brad Meltzer, visit his website at <www.bradmeltzer.com>.

Ethics Commission welcomes law professor as new member BY RHONDA VICTOR SIBILIA

A lawyer with a divinity degree is the newest member of the Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust. University of Miami Law Professor Charlton Copeland was sworn into the post at the Ethics Commission’s May 19 meeting. Copeland, who joined the UM faculty as an associate professor in 2007, earned a bachelor’s degree from Amherst College, a Master of Arts in Religion from Yale Divinity School, and a Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School. He has clerked for the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit as well as in the Constitutional Court of South Africa. Professor Copeland worked as an associate with an international law firm based in Washington, DC, before serving as a visiting assistant professor at Northwestern University. “I am terribly excited to be invited to serve on the commission so that I may become more involved in Miami-Dade County,” Copeland said. “I think it will be a valuable experience for me and I hope I can make a valuable contribution,” said the 35-year-old Brickell resident. Copeland fills the position on the fivemember board that is rotated between the UM and St. Thomas University schools of law. He replaces Magda Abdo-Gomez, the appointee from St. Thomas who served on the Ethics Commission with distinction for more than three years. She was honored at the May meeting. Another position on the Ethics Commission — previously filled by Erica

Charlton Copeland –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Wright, who resigned to run for political office — is expected to be filled shortly by the Chief Judge of the 11th Circuit Court. The Ethics Commission was created in 1996 as an independent agency with advisory and quasi-judicial powers. It is composed of five members, serving staggered terms of four years each. Through a program of education and outreach, the commission seeks to empower the community and bolster public trust.

Southwest Plumbing Services Inc. BY LEE STEPHENS

Southwest Plumbing Services Inc. was established in 1982. The three managing owner/partners have deep roots personally and professionally in the MiamiDade community. Miami natives, Dennis (CEO) and Tom Watson (Pres) started the company from Dennis’s garage in Kendall. Miami native and Palmetto Bay resident, Paul Roache (VP), also got his start with Southwest Plumbing in the 80’s and worked with the company for a decade, ran his own company and then returned and merged forces in 2005. Over 28 years the company has serviced south Florida customers with professionalism, experience, and pride. Most of the company’s plumbers and service techs are long time employees and residents and are among the most highly experienced and trained in the industry. Helpful, friendly and knowledgeable customer service and office staff members make your experience with the company a productive and pleasant one. Southwest Plumbing has a vast and varied resume including large residential, commercial, and institutional projects, as well some of the areas most prestigious luxury homes and local businesses. Satisfied and loyal

customers, old and new, small and large, are the key to success and sometimes “survival”, owners’ acknowledge. The company participated and flourished in our community’s expansion over nearly three decades. Recent years have been hard for many and the construction business has been especially difficult, but Southwest Plumbing has always prepared for leaner times and adapted through diversification and training. Plumbing is a trade, requiring serious training and years of experience to become qualified. New products and new technologies are always being developed and Southwest Plumbing has always been on the cutting edge. Green technologies such as natural gas, tankless water heating, solar heating, and water saver fixtures are increasingly becoming an industry focus. Responsible and efficient products are requested by customers who share Southwest Plumbing’s concern for our community and our planet. Southwest Plumbing would like to remind us that we can save money as well with the numerous Federal, State, and local rebates and tax incentives being given for energy efficient products. The company is fully licensed and insured and has extensive experience in all phases of residential, commercial and light industrial plumbing.

Young fashion design student exhibits his work BY LEE STEPHENS

Surrounded by fabrics, color markers, sketchbooks and art books, you can find 10-year-old Christopher Abella, Miami’s youngest fashion design student, who attends South Miami K-8 Center’s Expressive Arts Magnet. Born in Miami to Cuban immigrant parents, Christopher has had a rare gift for drawing and fashion design from a young age. By 9 he already was studying privately with fashion designer Tracy Ellyn of Miami Art and Design, who worked as a designer in New York for 13 years and still designs part-time in New York while residing in Miami. “I simply have never seen anyone so young have a passion and an understanding for the fashion figure and how to sketch it so elegantly,” Ellyn said. “I’ve worked on Seventh Avenue for all the top designers, and I sense that he, too, could already work there. It’s uncanny. Where does this come from?” Ellyn watches her young student as he comes up with creations swirled from his pencil onto paper with nary a breath, while colors, metallics and beading come to life in his imagination. As if his unique and elegant gowns aren’t enough, he then proceeds to add matching shoes of such high style that even ManoloBlahnik would believe he has a competitor. “I ask him where he comes up with these ideas, and he simply states with the innocence of a child, ‘From my head.’ This is the definition of true artistic talent. With little to no exposure, and having never been to New York or Paris, he knows how to design on an intuitive level. It is as if he was a designer in his previous life, so to speak,” Ellyn explained.

Chirstopher Abella, 10, is pictured during his first art and fashion opening at The Angel’s Ring on Miracle Mile in Coral Gables. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Laurie Russell, lead magnet teacher at South Miami K-8 Center, recognized Christopher’s talent early on. He applied for her audition-based visual arts program at age 7, successfully, of course. Russell has been his fine arts teacher for the past two years, since third grade. He is just completing fourth grade at the magnet now. Russell has instilled in Christopher the classic training and knowledge of media that a typical college art student would receive. He has learned observational drawing, painting, mixed media, ceram-

ics, and all of the art elements and design principles that an artist should know. It is largely due to Russell that Christopher has evolved from child artist to sophisticated visual thinker. Simultaneously, Ellyn exposes Christopher not only to designing, but also to the history of the world’s great fashion designers such as Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Charles James, Christian Dior, and Diane Von Furstenberg, the latter of the two with whom she worked. His favorite designer thus far is Valentino. Ellyn shares with him a rare

collector’s book that she got in Europe in the 1980s containing Valentino’s sketches and actual fabric swatches. Christopher can barely contain his excitement as she turns the pages for him. At Ellyn’s suggestion, Christopher went to visit the brilliant Coral Gables couture designer Ozcar G, who recognized Christopher’s talent and passion immediately. Ozcar took him under his wing to show him the Ozcar G collection and explain the fabrics and construction of his one-of-a-kind gowns. Ozcar G, himself a Cuban immigrant who started in fashion at age 10, relates personally to Christopher’s special passion, and has been kind enough to interrupt a wealthy woman’s fitting to go sit with Christopher and talk to him about his portfolio and his future. As equally adept on the baseball field as the drawing table, Christopher is an anomaly. At school, he is just a regular kid working on his reading and math skills, and socializing with his friends. His polite manners and humble expressions round out the picture of this rare talent. Christopher held an opening for the exhibition of his fashion designs and art pieces during the recent Gallery Night in the Gables, at The Angel’s Ring, 86 Miracle Mile. More than 200 people attended what turned out to be The Angel’s Ring busiest Gallery Night since they have been in business. Christopher autographed his designer tote bags and invitations for fans, while onlookers enjoyed a wine and cheese reception. Ever sweet and humble, this creative, tiny designer in his French beret has begun his first taste of fashion world showmanship.
