Money Matters: Conquering the cost of college
Aventura Hospital installs revolutionary CT imaging technology Aventura Hospital has acquired a new stateof-the-art, CT imaging system from GE Healthcare. The LightSpeed® VCT is the world's first Volume Computed Tomography (VCT) system. Aventura Hospital now offers an innovative way for its physicians to obtain the information they need to diagnose disease and lifethreatening illnesses, including cardiovascular disease, stroke and chest pain. Aventura Hospital's physicians are now able to capture images of a beating heart in five heartbeats, an organ in one second, and perform whole body imaging in ten seconds, more than twice as fast as conventional multi-slice CT scanners. This speed is especially helpful in shortening breath holds for geriatric patients and patients who are on ventilators. "Our new Volume CT system allows our physicians to perform new and enhanced procedures and obtain the information they need to diagnose patients who are suffering from chest pain or stroke," said Heather J. Rohan, CEO. "Volume CT is patient friendly. Fast scans can help reduce patient stress and anxiety, and some of the volume CT procedures can be done in only one simple exam." Aventura Hospital can immediately offer the following innovative procedures to be performed on their new LightSpeed VCT: 5-Beat Cardiac - The physicians at Aventura Hospital can capture images of the whole heart and coronary arteries in just five heartbeats - providing clearer images of cardiovascular anatomy and a shorter breath hold for sick and elderly patients. Triple Rule Out - Three primary causes

of mortality in patients with chest pain are aortic dissection, pulmonary embolism, and coronary artery disease. The physicians at Aventura Hospital now have a tool to help them rule out (or in) these three individual causes of patient's chest pain through a single quick scan. Stroke Work-Up Once a stroke occurs, it is commonly believed that treatment must be delivered within an hour or less to ensure the best outcome for the patient. The LightSpeed VCT offers Aventura Hospital the speed and resolution required for rapid imaging of blood vessels in the brain. This enables physicians to make a quick diagnosis and determine the best course of treatment while reducing the number of exams a patient may need to undergo. In a single rotation, the LightSpeed VCT creates 64 high-resolution anatomical images as thin as a credit card. These images are combined to form a three-dimensional view of the patient's anatomy for the physicians at Aventura Hospital to analyze. From these images, physicians can view such things as blockages in the coronary arteries as well as the motion and pumping action of a patient's heart. "We're breaking barriers in speed and accuracy of patient exams and are now able to offer new and enhanced diagnostic procedures thanks to our new 64-Slice CT Scanner," stated Rohan, "The technology is greatly benefiting both the physicians and patients of MiamiDade and Broward Counties." Ernesto Mandowsky receives prestigious Gelvan Award More than 600 members of the community were recently on-hand at the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center located on the Sanford L. Ziff Campus to cheer for Krop Sr. High student and long-time JCC member, Ernesto (Ernie) Mandowsky, who was awarded the 29th Annual Leo Gelvan Award. This prestigious award is presented each year to a deserving JCC student athlete in recognition of his/her accomplishments both on and off the field, as part of the MAR-JCC's annual Gelvan Sports Awards ceremony, an event where all children and youth enrolled in MARJCC after school sports enrichments and leagues are recognized for their participation and achievements. In a heartfelt speech, Chris Moltmann, Sports and Fitness Director, noted that Ernie is an industrious young man who has organized tutoring services for his peers in foreign language and math. He is a member of the National French Honor Society, the Math Honor Society, the National Honor Society, and the Superior Honor Roll. He also participates in several extracurricular clubs as well. Ernie utilizes his fluency in French, Spanish and Hebrew to translate math tests used by his school's math department, to determine new students' abilities, to translate program guides for events at the Miami Jewish Home for the Aged, and create pamphlets illustrating the benefits of being
multilingual. He has received four academic awards. "Not only does Ernie share his love for language with his peers and community, he shares his love for kids and sports here at the 'J'," stated Chris. Ernie was a volunteer coach for the Swish Hoops basketball program during its first year at the JCC and actively takes part in the JCC Hebraica Department's Maccabi Tzair Youth Program. Currently, Ernie serves as a Rosh Madrich (head counselor) in Maccabi Tzair, where he assists in the supervision of volunteer group leaders and works with them in the implementation of their weekly programs and activities. Throughout Ernie's high school years, Chris highlighted Ernie's involvement with two teenagers with special needs, whom he has shared a common interest - basketball. According to Chris, "They play basketball on Sundays and Ernie coaches them like a big brother." Through their hard work and Ernie's devotion, these teens were mainstreamed onto one of the teams in the Hebraica Department's 2007 Olympic Games (Maccabeah). In concluding his remarks, Chris expressed that "Ernesto's parents, Daniela and Jack Mandowsky, have raised an intelligent, caring, loving and devoted young man and the Jewish community is a better place for this." VIEWPOINT Congress, the energy stumbling block
Abuse frequently against elderly women
BY CARL POPE
BY MARTHA BURK
It's scary how difficult it is persuading this Congress to embrace a new energy future. What's going on here? Part of the problem is business as usual. Part is that while Congress understands health care is a national issue, it still sees energy as a regional one -- one on which each representative is entitled to be as parochial as he or she desires. But part of it is a failure on the part of advocates, the media, and the political leadership to understand that America's energy problems are rooted in a market that is fundamentally broken and that cannot be fixed by a single silver bullet such as cap and trade or a carbon tax. Right now our government is making tremendous investments in order to build the green economy, and Congress has a duty to make sure these investments maximize the benefits to workers and the economy, as well as the environment. They must answer President Barack Obama's call to action and pass legislation necessary to not just address climate change, but also to protect workers, and to enact a sweeping overhaul of our broken, costly, and unsustainable energy system. The debate in Washington right now centers on the future of the American Clean Energy and Security Act, a comprehensive plan currently in the House of Representatives' Energy and Commerce Committee. So far committee Chairmen Henry Waxman (D-CA) and Ed Markey (D-MA) have done heroic work in reaching agreement on the committee around a comprehensive clean energy and climate plan, a critically important milestone that has faced seemingly insuperable obstacles. Their leadership has been truly remarkable. The committee has reached agreement on a compromise version of the American Clean Energy and Security Act. But it is clear that Big Oil, Big Coal and other polluters are still holding out for a congressional bailout. They will continue to try to riddle this legislation with loopholes, water it down, and load it up with hundreds of billions of dollars in giveaways. They don't want it to deliver a recovery fueled by the clean energy jobs that America needs. Too many of America's utilities are determined to keep providing Americans dirty electricity from coal. The auto industry is just as determined to feed us a diet of inefficient, gasoline-powered cars. They've
figured out that the Obama administration and the congressional leadership badly want to pass a cap and trade bill to send a strong signal before the Copenhagen climate conference in December. And they are determined to highjack this urgent moment. Their strategy is clear: Block any real reform of energy markets. Block any real commitment to reduce our dependence on oil and coal. Drag their feet to see if they can kill energy legislation altogether. If that fails, then they'll force a symbolic "cap and trade" bill that they know they can unravel later. What's the solution? We need to tell our leaders that we won't let coal and oil steal our clean energy future. We want Congress to enact not the shadow but the substance of the president's energy platform. A strong bill must accomplish three things to effectively jumpstart the green recovery, build the clean energy future, and end our addiction to oil and coal. It must dramatically ramp up America's transition to cleaner, cheaper energy sources like wind, solar, biomass, and geothermal; it must slash energy waste in order to cut emissions quickly and cheaply, while saving consumers money on their energy bills; and it must close the global warming pollution loophole by making polluters pay for the greenhouse gasses they emit. Strong legislation will also revitalize the manufacturing sector and create the industries of tomorrow. These new clean energy jobs--building wind turbines, installing solar panels, renovating buildings to make them more energy efficient, constructing the smart grid--are jobs that can't be outsourced. Our nation believes in its ability to innovate and solve big problems. We've proven time and time again we can rise to the occasion and address major environmental challenges without harming the economy: Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, acid rain. America must act now and become the global leader in clean, renewable energy technologies to drive U.S. economic growth and reduce global warming pollution.

The month of May is almost behind us, and with it the flowers and candy many of us showered on our mothers earlier in the month to mark Mother's Day. But many older mothers are getting showered with attention of another kind - abuse. Take the case of Ruth, an 89-year-old woman who was in fairly good health when she entered an Iowa nursing home for physical therapy in 2008. When she left to go home 25 days later, Ruth's leg was rotting and consumed by gangrene. She died three months later. State and federal officials rightly called it neglect, and fined the nursing home $112,650. The nursing home owner is of course contesting the ruling. He runs a lobbying organization and is complaining about the fine to Iowa legislators, accusing the inspections department of “flogging” nursing homes and blocking seniors' access to care by imposing huge fines. Ruth's case, highlighted in “Elder Abuse: A Women's Issue,” the annual Mother's Day report from the Older Women's League (OWL), is by no means an isolated one. Domestic and institutional elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation cause serious harm to anywhere from 500,000 to 5 million individuals in the United States every year. Females make up approximately 66 percent of the victims. That means up to 3 million older women are battered, beaten, swindled, or neglected by relatives and so-called caregivers. It's a problem that has been recognized since at least the 1980s. But 25 years of congressional hearings on its devastating effects have produced no federal law to address the problem in a comprehensive manner, even though elder-battering has been called both a disgrace and a “burgeoning national scandal.” Despite continued efforts, one by Orrin Hatch,
Republican of Utah, the Elder Abuse Prevention Act of 2006 and the Elder Justice Act of 2008 failed to pass under GOP control of Congress. Even without legislation, one would think our national institutions might be addressing the issue. Not so. Adult Protective Services, the front line responder to elder abuse under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, does not have a federal office, federal standards, oversight, training, data collection or reliable funding. What's worse, there is not a single federal employee working full-time on elder abuse in America. In late March, the Elder Justice Act was introduced as S. 795 again by Senators Hatch and Lincoln (D-Ark.). In addition, Senator Kohl (D-Wisc.) reintroduced his Patient Safety Act as S. 631. Both bills await action in the Senate Finance Committee. Meanwhile on the House side, its version of the Elder Justice Act was introduced by Rep. Peter King (RN.Y.) as H.R. 2006 in mid-April. Overall prospects for final action on the Elder Justice Act are promising due to the Obama administration's expected support. Let's hope so. Otherwise, the states will continue to craft a hodgepodge of laws and regulations, meaning thesafety of elderly women is subject to geography and the lobbying power of corporate nursing homes. OWL's report documents the need for comprehensive elder abuse prevention laws -using the models of prevention of violence against women and of child abuse. It's about time. It's about our mothers.

Benton Launerts moves to Marksman Security Corp. as Vice President of Business Development BY LYNN CARROLL
PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE
LC: Your move to Marksman Security Corp. from Park One of Florida at a time when most people are strug gling to hold on to their jobs has surprised a lot of people. What was your motivation? BL: I really enjoyed helping to build the Park One brand, and it wasn't an easy decision. But I think it was a good one. I'm very excited about the opportunity to build another company in the same way. LC: Is going from valet parking to the property security industry a big jump for you? BL: Not really, because at Marksman Security our core business is luxury condos and highrises, too, although the company also has other types of clients. We provide services to hotels including the Trump International on Sunny Isles Beach, as well as Classic Residences by Hyatt in Aventura, Boca Executive Airport and Muvico theatres. LC: T h a t ' s q u i t e a d i v e r s e c u s t o m e r b a s e . W h a t k i n d s of services does Marksman Security provide? BL: Primarily guard service, but we have expertise in
access control, emergency response and planning, tenant and visitor services and relations, law enforcement communications, security hardware and building infrastructure integration, and CPR/first aid - and it's continually upgraded through coordination with property managers, property owners and governmental agencies. In addition, Marksman assists clients in conducting site security assessments, reviewing security policies and procedures, and analyzing how property infrastructure, site visitors and personnel impact their overall security program. In case of emergency, our clients have access to senior Marksman management 24 hours a day to rapidly address any natural disaster, labor dispute or other situation requiring immediate response. LC: W h a t ' s t h e c o m p a n y ' s h i s t o r y ? BL: Marksman Security was founded in 2003, and in the six-and-a-half years since then it's been growing exponentially. It now provides state-of-the-art security at more than 80 locations - and most of that business has come from referrals.

Aventura Heart Center presents ten reasons to see a cardiologist treating rapid or irregular heartbeats. Electrocardiograms and heart monitors uncover these arrhythmias, that drugs and newer pacemaker devices can control. Patients complain of feeling the heart beating forcibly or very rapidly, symptoms that are not only annoying, but may represent serious heart disease. Full diagnostic testing for underlying heart disease needs to be conducted when palpitations are felt by the patient or even when diagnosed by a routine physical exam or electrocardiogram.
BY DAVID KORN, MD AND ROBERT RASKEN, MD Aventura Heart Center Directors Dr. David Korn and Dr. Robert Rasken have compiled ten reasons why patients should seek the opinion of a cardiologist. Five reasons are included in this week's article and the remaining five will be included in a continued article appearing in the June 10th edition of Aventura News. Patients should routinely see their doctors for regular checkups. Below begins ten resons why one should specifically visit a cardiologist: * An acute heart attack needs cardiology intervention immediately to determine specific evidence based therapies. Decisions about acute coronary syndromes change according to which therapies have shown more benefit than other alternative therapies. Immediate use of drugs in the emergency room will influence the outcome of the heart attack. Decisions about cardiac catheterization with angioplasty and different types of stents are best defined by cardiologists. Post-event drug therapy is stressed to prevent further cardiac events and second heart attacks. Aspirin with or without clopidigrel, statins for cholesterol, angiotensin blocking agents, and beta-blockers are essential for future protection against heart disease. * Chest or jaw discomfort are the most common symptoms associated with heart disease and the possibility of a heart attack or angina. This discomfort may be heaviness or tightness in the chest, arms, back, or jaw. The symptoms are more common in men, rather than women, who may feel more nausea, weakness or fatigue as manifestations of heart disease. Sensations occurring with
Dr. Robert Rasken and Dr. David Korn, directors, Aventura Heart Center
activity such as walking fast or uphill suggest cardiac problems. Cardiologists evaluate these symptoms daily and assess the problem with specific cardiac testing and therapies, including nuclear Stress Tests and Echocardiograms. * Shortness of breath occurring with activity or excitement suggests a cardiac origin. Lying down and suddenly feeling like you are suffocating, also leads the cardiologist toward a cardiac problem. Lung disease is also a primary source of shortness of breath, a situation that needs to be differentiated from heart disease. * Palpitations and rapid heart beats lead directly to a cardiologist as most other physicians are not comfortable
* Fainting, a feeling of impending fainting, and dizziness come from many causes, some of which are related to too slow or too fast heart beats and some types of heart murmurs. Echocardiography and cardiac monitoring can uncover these causes of fainting and dizziness, causes that are correctable with proper diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. Sometimes even a Stress Test evaluation is needed. Aventura Heart Center provides the most comprehensive prevention and general cardiovascular services. It is a unique healthcare center offering state-of-the-art nuclear cardiac and stress thallium testing to effectively diagnose heart disease, ultrasound diagnostics and bone density testing in the office. Also offering complete lipid treatment, arrhythmia detection and pacer evaluation. Aventura Heart Center is located at 2845 Aventura Blvd. Suite 249. Office hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To make an appointment, call 305 932 6061. Be sure to look out for the June 10th edition of Aventura News for the remaining five reasons to see a cardiologist.

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER
Time to make up over makeup Q: There has been an ongoing problem between my husband and me for quite some time. I don’t wear makeup except on very rare occasions when I go to work. Any time I have started putting any on, he starts asking me to put on my makeup for him when we have sex. I can’t see putting on makeup just to go to bed, and as far as I’m concerned he’s just trying to cause an argument. Besides those times when I put makeup on to go to work, he always complains he wants me to wear some for him and not fuss for the rest of the world. Who does he think I’m wearing it for? After the last time, I decided to throw it all in the garbage and quit
wearing making altogether because it always starts an argument. I’m beginning to think he’s not normal. What do you think? A: It’s very difficult for me to give you some good advice here. I really would have to know much more. I can’t believe that the only reason the two of you are having some problems has to do with makeup. It sounds to me that maybe there are some other issues that he would like changed in your lovemaking that perhaps are making him feel frustrated Just throwing the makeup in the garbage won’t solve the problem. Why don’t the two of you, at a time when you are not arguing, sit down and have a talk. Say to him that in order to make peace you are not using any makeup these days; however, explain that you would like to use some at some time, so you would like to know what is really bothering him. Ask him, “Am i doing something that really bugs you?” If he can’t give you an explanation, then you should suggest that he go to see a counselor or somebody to help lay this issue to rest because it would be a pity to spoil what seems to be a good relationship over an argument about something that probably could be solved.

You as author BY PATRICIA C. FRANK Do you know that you are an author even if you never write a word? You are the author of the story of your life. You may not be writing it down but you are still the author. You are the main character in your story. It is all about you. It is about who you are as a person and it is about your relationships, your dreams, and your accomplishments. When you write something you are communicating something. You are taking your thoughts and feelings and expressing them in a way that lets others understand them. Your words can touch someone, move them, motivate them and heal them. You are infusing letters and words with life and meaning. You are creating something. You could envision your life as a book that someone would pick up and read. This book represents you and your philosophy of life. It is about your choices and character. It is your message and your legacy. 1Think about the title of your book. Think about the length of the book. It can be long like a tome or short like a pamphlet. Think about the titles of the chapters. Some of the chapters have already been written. Your birth and your early years up until now,
FIRST CHOICE AIR SOLUTIONS were written to a large extent by some one else. But at some point you become the author. You decide what will be written about your life everyday. You are the one creating the scenarios. You may not be able to rewrite the early years but you can write the current chapters. Write the short biography that describes who you are and what you do that will go on the inside flap. Condensing your whole life into a few words puts some perspective on everything. Think about the moral of your story. How will you sum up your life? As the author of your life and book you have the power to revise and change the chapters. You also have the ability to change the ending. As the author you control everything in the book that is your life. You may not control all the circumstances but you control your reaction to those circumstances. You are not only creating a book or a movie you are creating your life. If you were to pick up the book of your life and read it, what would it say about you? How would your story read? Live the life and write the book you would like to read about yourself.

Heart Failure Center at Mount Sinai Aventura Columbia University Division of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Many people have heard of interventional cardiology, but may not know what it is and how it is used to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease. Dr. Todd Heimowitz, who is board-certified in interventional cardiology, cardiovascular diseases, adult echocardiography, nuclear cardiology and internal medicine, shares his insights on the specialty. What is interventional cardiology? It consists of a series of non-surgical, minimally invasive procedures performed to treat cardiovascular disease. During a typical interventional cardiology procedure, a catheter (a long thin, flexible tube) is inserted into a blood vessel through a small incision in the groin and guided to the heart, enabling us to repair damaged vessels or other heart structures. What problem do you treat most often using interventional cardiology? One of the primary problems that I treat is coronary artery disease or the blockage of arteries. The inner surfaces of the arteries become blocked or dangerously narrowed by a buildup of fatty deposits, cholesterol, calcium and plaque. The blockage restricts blood flow to the heart, which can lead to a heart attack or other heart problems. What types of procedures do you per form? To aid in diagnosis, we perform intravascular ultrasound, using a special device to get a better look at the artery and we use pressure wires to measure the pressure in the artery to see if the blockage is severe. Angioplasty and stenting may be performed if we find that there is a severe
blockage. In these procedures, a balloon placed at the tip of the catheter is inflated to stretch open the artery and restore blood flow to the heart. When necessary, a stent – a small metal mesh tube – is expanded in the newly opened artery to act as a scaffold and keep the artery open. We sometimes use drug-eluting stents, a very safe and effective means of preventing restenosis, or the development of blockages within the stent. These stents are coated with a special medication which is released during the first few weeks after surgery when restenosis is likely to occur. Are there any common risk factors asso ciated with this disease? Risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes and obesity. Men who are in their 50s and older are at a greater risk of developing coronary artery disease, as are women who are in their 60s or older. How would I know if I have coronary artery disease? Will I have chest pain? Patients who have coronary artery disease do not always experience chest pain. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, neck or jaw pain, sweating and nausea. How do I get treatment? Patients are often referred by their primary care physician after complaining of symptoms associated with coronary heart disease, while many others are treated after they are taken to the emergency room in distress as a result of classic or atypical symptoms. We are very fortunate that Mount Sinai Medical Center’s freestanding emergency department in Aventura is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment that can very rapidly evaluate patients suffering from coronary artery disease. If emergency catheterization is required, we have ambulances on standby to transport patients to our Miami Beach campus for immediate treatment. Visit California wineries BY BILL KOFOED Every lover of California wines is familiar with Napa and Sonoma, b ut be sure ad Calistoga to that list. Just north of Napa’s premier wineries, Calistoga boasts not only fine wines but a unique attraction - Castello di Amorosa (Castle of Love) a 121,000 s.f. 12th century Tuscan style castle which took 14 years to build. Probably even the owner doesn’t know the final cost, but it reputedly is in the area of $30 million. To make it authentic, medieval designs, construction methods and antique materials were shipped from Italy. Among the highlights are a Great Hall with 22 foot high frescoed ceiling; 500 year old giant fireplace; moat drawbridge, secret passageways, and even an authentic prison and torture chamber. Over 8,000 tons of stone, hand-chiseled by European artisans, were used in the castle. All gates, nails, lamps and chains were hand-forged in the eight level (four above ground and four below) castle. Only a few miles from the Castello is Sterling Vineyards, perched on top of a mountain that is only accessible by cable car. The view of the vineyards and surrounding mountains is breathtaking. In
contrast with the Castello, Sterling produces nearly a million cases of highly regarded wine which was distributed nationally and to some foreign countries. There is an excellent self-guided tour of the winery, which The New York Times cites as “one of the most spectacular in the Napa Valley.” The wine tasting is not to be missed. If you’re looking for a real “sleeper,” try nearby Schramsberg, a boutique winery which only produces about 60,000 cases annually of nine distinctive sparkling wines. They are so well received that they have been served at the White House; in London for Queen Elizabeth; at a reception for former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev; at fundraiser hosted by President and Mrs. Reagan and others. I tried three of the wines, the 2001 Reserve SRP which retails at about $100; the 2005 Blanc de Blancs, about $36; and the 2005 Cremant Demi-sec, about $38. Superb. An ideal place to stay while touring the Calistoga and Sonoma wineries is The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa , a AAA Four Diamond and Mobile Four Star resort . Rarely will you find better service and a genuinely caring attention to detail and the guest’s comfort.

2009 Nissan Maxima luxury sport sedan has all-new identity Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The all-new 2009 Nissan Maxima is the seventh generation of the luxury sport sedan and it just may be the best one yet. The Maxima rides on Nissan’s popular D Platform, the same FWD underpinning that was introduced with the hot-selling Altima. However, the chassis has been “enhanced” with the use of aluminum suspension links, revised suspension, new technology shocks, a lower engine mounting and a new Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), all of which contribute to minimal torque steer and much better handling As for design, the new Maxima no longer resembles its sibling Altima, but does look a lot like Nissan’s new GT-R super sports car. It has a short nose and deck, a long sloping roof, deeply sculpted fenders and a wider front and rear track. Wraparound upturned headlights and a wide grille combine with a large bumper
opening and a bulging hood. The design flows through deep-waisted rear fenders and into a high trunk lid. New L-shaped LED taillights with side marker bulbs accent the rear. The sporty look is accented further by 18-inch (or available 19-inch) aluminum alloy wheels and low-profile performance tires. The new Maxima is available in two models, the 3.5 S and 3.5 SV, both powered by an enhanced 3.5-liter VQ-series 290-hp V-6 engine (19/26 mpg). The revised engine has a modular design with microfinished crank journals and cam lobes, molybdenum coated lightweight pistons, a resin intake collector, digital knock control, six individual coils (one per spark plug) and a cross-flow coolant pattern. It also has a Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS), a variable induction system, a silent timing chain and an electronically controlled throttle. It all adds up to more horsepower and torque for quicker acceleration. The 3.5 SV models add leatherappointed sport seats, an advanced Bose premium audio system with nine speakers, HomeLink, fog lights and outside mirrors with turn signal indicators. Several option packages are offered,
All-new Nissan Maxima has a short nose and trunk, a wide grille, wraparound upturned headlights and deeply sculpted fenders.
including the Sport Package with sporttuned suspension, 19-inch wheels, rear spoiler, High Intensity Discharge (HID) Xenon headlights, heated outside mirrors with reverse tilt-down features, automatic entry/exit system with two-driver memory, heated front seats and steering wheel, paddle shifters, metallic link trim, Bluetooth, Satellite Radio and premium leather-appointed seats. The Premium Package includes a dualpanel moonroof with rear roof window and front and rear power retractable sunshades, heated outside mirrors with reverse tilt-down features, automatic entry/exit system with two-driver memo-
ry, heated front seats and steering wheel, paddle shifters, premium leather-appointed seats, eucalyptus wood-tone trim, 7.0inch color monitor and rearview monitor. This new 2009 Nissan Maxima should compete very well in a class that includes the Chrysler 300, Cadillac CTS, Acura TL, Infiniti G35 and Toyota Avalon. Base price is $29,290 on the 3.5S and $31,900 on the 3.5SV.

How lean are your greens? Salads could be sabotaging diets BY BARI AUERBACH If you’ve been adding high calorie dressings, cheese and croutons at the salad bar – it’s time to “raise the bar” for leafy green success and toss in nutrient-rich ingredients that won’t sabotage weight-loss goals. Believe it or not, burying greens under top-heavy toppings can turn an ordinary salad into an extraordinary diet disaster with more calories and fat than a Big Mac. According to Oxygen fitness magazine, the “ideal salad” should be comprised of 50% veggies and grains; 25% healthy fats; and 25% lean protein. ‘Let-tuce feel fuller ’ To curb hunger pangs, choose spinach and kale. Both contain lipolic acid, an antioxidant combating the hunger pang hormone ghrelin and increasing the “I’m full” hormone leptin. Fiber can also help weight loss goals by making you feel fuller on fewer calories. Fiber-rich vegetables are salad saviors along with greens high in folic acid, which assists in cell repair…One cup of romaine lettuce has three times more folic acid than a cup of iceberg. ‘It’s ok to include carbs’ Adding a half-cup of whole grains to a salad can also contribute to the “fullness factor.” Good choices include cooked bulgur, couscous, or quinoa. Diced sweet potatoes and brown rice are low-glycemic carbs that can also help make a salad more filling. ‘Good vs. bad fats’ Trade the Caesar dressing and potato salad with mayo for monosaturated fats such as low-fat dressing and an ounce of avocado or one quarter cup of whole wheat croutons or unsalted nuts. Better cheese choices include small portions of feta, blue or aged Parmesan that can add a lot of flavor with fewer calories. ‘Pump up the protein’ Adding three ounces of lean protein on top of veggies and grains optimize glycogen stores that can help increase the duration of workouts. Some of the best protein choices include eggs, tuna (hold the mayo), grilled fish, shrimp, lean turkey breast, skinless
chicken breast, tofu, seeds and beans. ‘Best dressings’ A new oil or vinegar can really change up your dressings and make for tasty, healthful salad toppings. Try mixing apple cider vinegar with apple juice and spicy mustard - or rice wine vinegar with mirin wine (in the Oriental section) and orange juice. Another suggestion: Toasted sesame oil and rice wine vinegar with orange slices over cabbage greens. Or a combination of orange juice, balsamic vinegar, and Grey Poupon mustard. You can add some olive oil to make it even richer (especially great over spinach leaves). ‘Summer salad’ Here’s a great recipe from Joy Bauer’s Summer Slim-Down Guide for Chopped Chicken Salad with Apples and Walnuts
Ingredients: 4 or 5-ounce chicken breast, cooked, chopped; 1/4 cup chopped cucumber with peel; 1/4 cup chopped tomato; 1/2 cup chickpeas; 1/2 medium Fuji or Macintosh apple with skin, chopped; 1 tablespoon chopped walnuts; 1/4 cup chopped avocado; 1/4 cup chopped celery; 2 scallions, finely chopped; 1 to 2 cups chopped Romaine lettuce; 2 to 4 tablespoons low-calorie raspberry vinaigrette. Place all the greens, the vegetables, the fruit, and the nuts in a bowl. Toss all the ingredients. Pour vinaigrette over the mixture. Toss again, until all the ingredients are coated with the dressing.
