Bourbon Steak hosts ‘raise your spirits’ networking event BY BARI AUERBACH
eyond raising the bar for building business, the recent “raise your spirits” networking event hosted by Bourbon Steak gave Aventura Marketing Council members a great opportunity to socialize and discover why the famous restaurant at The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club is renowned for “contemporary fare with a focus on all natural, organic and hormone-free cuts of beef and the freshest seafood available worldwide.” Business and community leaders greeted by general manager John Riccardo were impressed by the striking décor and ultra-hip atmosphere of Bourbon Steak - the brainchild of James Beard award-winning chef Michael Mina. A successful restaurateur, Mina is the “culinary innovator” behind critically-acclaimed restaurants in Las Vegas, California, Atlantic City and Detroit. Friends from Prudential Florida Realty, Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, Miami Gardens Florist and Visiting Angels concurred that while Bourbon Steak has already earned the distinction “Best Steak in America” from Esquire magazine – “Best Modern American Cuisine” should be the next award bestowed for the menu’s variety of exceptional dishes. Teams from Denise Rubin Realty, KioCash, City National Bank, the Newport

Beachside Hotel & Resort, Krystal Marcus Realty and Juice Plus were especially impressed by specialties including Wood Grilled Filet Mignon, New York Strip and Porterhouse steaks, Dry-Aged “Kansas City” Strip, Live Maine Lobster, Colorado Lamb, and Wood-Grilled Tuna or Salmon. Experts from Bnai Zion Foundation, Costco, EWM Realty, AFLAC, DS Xpress, AventuraUSA.com and Circle of Lifesaving highly recommended “Michael’s Classics” like Glazed Beef Short Rib, Whole Fried Chicken for two, Maine Lobster Potpie in a truffle-cream sauce, and Oven Roasted Chicken Breast with truffled mac and cheese. Gourmet connoisseurs from the office of Dr. Frederick Knoll, C&C Insurance and Levitt Weinstein were also eager to try chilled shellfish from the raw bar and appetizers including Ahi Tuna Tartare, American Wagyu Beef Tartare and Spring Asparagus Soup. Leaders from the Debbie Taylor Band, Mobile Assistance Direct and Granoff Enterprises had more rave reviews for Aventura’s favorite new form of entertainment: “Bourbon and Blues” nights on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. featuring local legends belting out the blues while you can enjoy 25% off any selection from Bourbon Steak’s extensive whisky and bourbon list – plus sample blues-inspired additions to the regular menu. Dr. David Muransky, president of the Rotary Club of Hallandale Beach / Aventura’s Foundation recently surprised Natalia Sulca, graduating senior from Dr. Michael M. Krop Sr. High School, with a $2,000 scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass. During the Aventura Marketing Council meeting sponsored by Nova Southeastern University held at the Newport Beachside Hotel, keynote speaker Miami-Dade School Superintendent Alberto Carvalho congratulated Natalia on her beautiful renditions of the Star Spangled Banner and Wind Beneath My Wings. Dr. Muransky called Natalia up to the podium at the end of the meeting to surprise her with the $2,000 check from his Rotary Club, noting, “The Rotary Club of Hallandale Beach / Aventura Foundation is extremely proud to present this scholarship award to Natalia… a young lady who exemplifies all the core values of Rotary’s “Four-Way Test” adopted by Rotary in 1943 and translated into more than a hundred languages and pub-

She recorded a Christmas CD, her third CD
with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Lighthouse for the Blind, and during the summers, she also volunteers her time to work with blind children ages 4 – 13 years old at The Lighthouse, teaching them how to sing and play musical instruments. She also tutored middle school students in math, English and science in an afterschool program and has entertained throughout the community. Last August, she represented the Aventura Marketing Council in a “talent show-down” at the Hard Rock Café Miami that involved seven chambers of commerce, and won First Place as voted by a panel of celebrity judges. Her First Place award allowed her to make a donation of $500 to the charity of her choice, and she chose the Anchors Away Foundation, the organization run by Aventura Comm. Billy Joel that provides specially-equipped access dinghies to children who are physically and mentally challenged. The program teaches them science, math and life skills while teaching them how to sail their own little boats.

Collection and Collectors
Patricia C.Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING A collection is an accumulation of similar things all in one place. A collection is an assembly of objects or people who are brought together for a purpose. A collection represents something. It may be significant and noteworthy or it may be whimsical. A collector is someone who accumulates things. Someone who systematically seeks out things of interest or value with the intention of acquiring them. A collector may gather widely scattered things or people with no particular arrangement and bring them together. Or, the collector may have a theme to their collection. We are all collectors to one degree or another. What are you collecting? Are they items of beauty that bring you pleasure or items that have a special meaning to you? Do you identify or define your personality with the items you collect? Does it enhance your importance and make you more significant? Does it make you appear superior
to others with more authority and knowledge about a particular item? Does your collection make you appear more refined, polished, elegant or cultured? Or are you simply drawn to certain items without any conscious reason? Regardless of the motivation, it is all right to amass things or people that bring you joy. Who are you collecting? Are they positive people or negative people, givers or takers, users or helpers, admirers or detractors? Who and what you surround yourself with has a great influence on your life. It is healthier for you if the people around you possess similar values and morals. It is better if they have a comparable philosophy of life. They should be kindred spirits. The things and people you collect can become true collectibles. A true collectible has value. Make sure it is something or someone worth acquiring. Collectors frequently cull their collections and remove less desirable items or people. As a collector, it is a good idea, from time to time, to look at your collections and make decisions about what is valuable to keep and what should be recycled. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212308-0309.

Memorial Adult Day Care provides elder care alternative
The Memorial Adult Day Care Center in Hallandale Beach offers a sensible alternative to full-time residential care. The speciallytrained staff provides supervised recreational and therapeutic programs for adults during the day. Structured activities are geared to stimulate both the participants’ minds and bodies. “The goal of the Memorial Adult Day Care Center is to help keep adults at home as long as possible by offering companionship and care for our participants and relief for their caregivers during the day,” said Vilma McKay, director of the center. “We are dedicated to maintaining - and often improving the functional levels of our participants to help make life more enjoyable for everyone involved.” She explained that the Center is available to those individuals who should not be left alone during the day because they are confused, suffer memory loss, have a physical handicap or have a medical condition which requires supervision. As part of the registration process, potential Adult Day Care Center participants go through a personal interview, conducted by a registered nurse, which evaluates the functional, emotional and mental status of the individual to determine if the program is appropriate. Once the individual begins attending the center, programs are designed to meet his or her specific needs. The safe, pleasant environment promotes a feeling of belonging and encourages participation. A hot noon meal is served in a social dining atmosphere, often improving appetites. A typical day’s activities might include adult education, community outings, discussion groups, exercise therapy, music and dancing, pet therapy, recreational activities and relaxation therapy. There are some additional benefits to participating, according to McKay. While each program participant must continue to be seen by his or her personal physician, the Memorial Adult Day Care Center offers select health services, including blood pressure monitoring, exercise classes, individual / family information and referrals, individual nursing assessment, medication supervision, nutrition monitoring & counseling and personal care assistance & classes. Memorial Adult Day Care Center is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Rates which include lunch are $47 per day for a full day or $24 for a half day. The hourly rate is $6 per hour. If you or someone you know would like more information about this valuable community service, or if you would like to preview the Memorial Adult Day Care Center, call 954-457-0505.

Comm. Sally Heyman’s staff participates in Baynanza at Haulover Beach for the 7th year ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
For the seventh consecutive year, Comm. Sally Heyman’s office joined the 2010 Baynanza Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day. Baynanza, now in its 28th year, is a large-scale community event organized by the Miami-Dade Department of Environmental Resources Management (DERM) that focuses on cleaning trash and other debris from Biscayne Bay. This year, Comm. Heyman’s office, along with more than 8,600 volunteers, picked up several tons of trash from the shoreline,
including Haulover Beach in the commissioner’s district. “Biscayne Bay is one of Miami-Dade’s most important ecosystems, and residents must do all they can to keep it clean and beautiful,” said Comm. Heyman. “While DERM does a great job organizing Baynanza every year, we all have to do our part to keep our beaches spotless at all times.” For information on Baynanza, visit miamidade.gov/derm

‘Some Summer Things to Do’
Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY During summer time in the city, things slow down a bit – so here are some ideas for dodging the doldrums: Kill some time: If you don’t have any plans for the day, you could literally spend hours around town just waiting on various lines. Take a number at the automotive department and plan on staying around ‘til the new model years come out. Join the crowd waiting in the only check-out lane open at the craft store - and knit a sweater for fall. Idle for a while at the drive-thru bank teller to cash your paycheck - then count how many pennies you might have left over after you get more gas and groceries. Enjoy a day at the park: Founders Park, Veterans Park, Waterways Park…Aventura has beautiful parks where you can spend a leisurely afternoon once you figure out which is for dogs, which is for kids and
which are for both. Just don’t get confused and go to the Parc at Turnberry Isle or Parc Central – those are both Aventura condos that don’t have athletic fields, playgrounds or splashpads. Get hurricane supplies: Now’s the time to stock up on plenty of bottled water – although many Aventura residents prefer bottles of fine wine…essential if you’re going to be dining by candlelight when there’s no power. See a summer blockbuster: Meet up with “Sex and the City” girls reminiscing during the early bird at Mo’s; get up close and personal with an “Iron Man” at Olympia Gym; catch “Toy Story 3” in Aventura parking lots where you can always see expensive sports cars with all the toys; find a “Prince of Persia” looking for a princess at neighborhood hot spots on ladies night; or see the city’s own “A-Team” in action during an Aventura Commission meeting! Lounge by the pool: Instead of going to work – work on your tan and fulfill some summer time community service hours…After all, Aventura does have a reputation to uphold for being home to those who enjoy the best combination of luxury and lifestyle!

Biscayne Institutes of Health & Living founder Dr. Marie DiCowden helps set the pace for healthcare reform

PROVACATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVATIVE PEOPLE still needs to be tweaked, but it’s setting the stage not only for changes in financing and getting costs under control but for the next step of changing the delivery system.

MD: Real change will come as various agencies implement new programs and we begin building new models for delivery. Biscayne Institutes is a part of the HealthCare Community™ model, which already provides integrated primary care, rehabilitation, health promotion and preventive care under one roof. It’s a working
model of the “health village” concept we hear so much about now.
L C : W h a t h e a l t h c a r e s e c t o r w i l l b e n e fi t m os t ? MD: It’s clear that primary care will get a shot in the arm with the new legislation. I recently served as a grant reviewer for grants submitted to the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality for a grant program entitled “Transforming Primary Care.” Agencies such as AHRQ and HRSA are providing grants and demonstration projects to get primarycare physicians to band more with others to provide holistic care. To me this is very encouraging, because Biscayne Institutes was founded on the premise that we need to treat the whole person, and I have seen the positive results of doing that. Health isn’t just a question of body mechanics. Studies have shown that 80% of medical cases have a serious emotional component. So the social determinants of illness need to be addressed as well –– how we relate to our-
selves, our work, our families, our culture, our community and our environment. This is the definition the World Health Organization promotes in emphasizing the “social determinants” of health.
LC: In addition to providing integrative prim a ry care for all types of patients, what specialty programs does Biscayne Institutes provide? MD: We offer, among other things, programs designed to provide both schooling and daily rehabilitation services for children from 5-21 years of age with disabilities such as traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, congenital neurological disorders, strokes, learning disorders and hemi-paralysis. We also have specialty programs for adults with traumatic brain injury and chronic pain as well as for geriatric patients with memory problems, dementia and Alzheimers.

Fairmont Turnberry Isle welcomes back Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation, July 29 It’s home, sweet home, for Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation Miami and longtime event chair Allen Susser of Chef Allen’s. South Florida’s premier culinary benefit is making a grand return to the legendary Fairmont Turnberry Isle in Aventura on Thursday, July 29th just in time to give foodies a sampling of restaurants participating in the much-anticipated annual Miami Spice promotion, which starts August 1st. All proceeds from the event will be contributed to Share Our Strength, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization working to end childhood hunger. The special evening will be hosted by three-time Emmy award-winning TV anchor and local celebrity Laurie Jennings of WPLG Miami, and will showcase the latest cuisine, the best wines, champagnes and spirits, live music, and an impressive array of silent and live auction items. Continuing their contributions to the cause and keeping in line with the event’s “Back to Basics” theme this year, the area’s most celebrated chefs, including Susser, Daniel Buss of Fairmont Turnberry Isle, Gabriel Fenton of Bourbon Steak, Marc Vidal of Solea at W South Beach, Marco Ferraro of Wish, Andre Bienvenu of Joe’s Stone Crab and dozens more, will present their delicious specialties using locallygrown food. “Fairmont Turnberry Isle has always held
sentimental value for me,” says Susser. “It’s where Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation Miami first got its start and is also where I served as executive chef 30 years
ago. Since its inception, we’ve raised over $2.2 million to feed hungry children in Miami alone. By moving this event back to Aventura and on the heels of the Great
American Bake Sale held annually at Aventura Mall, we now have a greater opportunity to reach gourmands throughout the tricounty area. You simply won’t find a more popular food and wine event that makes such a large charitable impact in addition to reflecting the culinary expertise and diversity of so many talented chefs.” “We’re thrilled to welcome back Taste of the Nation Miami to Fairmont Turnberry Isle,” said David Feder, the legendary resort’s managing director. “It’s a stellar event that so many of our club members and guests have come to enjoy. A conversation… BY SUSAN BRADLEY
Over the last several years I have spoken with hundreds of daughters, all with a similar theme-What am I going to do with Mom? Am I therapist? Sometimes. A shoulder to cry on? Definitely. An expert in my field? Yes. My name is Susan and I work in the ever expanding field of assisted living. Actually I work and live right here in Aventura, and you may be one of the daughters I’ve spoken with. Well enough of that. The reason I am here is to help...each one of us knows someone who has struggled with caring for an elder family member. It’s tough and there is no guide book to follow- oh sure there are plenty of websites and the like, but until you’re faced with it- who thinks about this topic, really? It’s not the most fun thing in the world, is it? There many factors to consider when planning for assisted living-maybe Mom can stay in her home with help coming in or
maybe she can live with a family member. Recently I have had conversations with a family who lives in NY. Mom lives here on her own in a condominium. Mom has had a couple of falls- one time she spent 14 hours on the floor before a neighbor checked and found her. After a couple stays in the hospital- Mom is back home. The family decided not to “push” Mom into making a move to a safer environment. But why? You wouldn’t leave a child home alone when you know she isn’t safe- why is it so different with Mom? Think of this- the earlier you make a plan and face facts the better off everyone will be; Mom, you and your family. Families need to be strong enough to make these difficult decisions before it’s too late. I often find myself coaching these daughters and families- and asking the question “...Did Mom ever make you do anything you didn’t want to do? Like going to camp or participating a school activity or doing your home work? Well was it the best thing for you? ...” Have these discussions early with your loved ones, get them involved in the process, don’t wait and don’t ignore it. Give them the safety and comfort and respect they deserve. And, who knows? You just might feel better yourself.

BRIO Tuscan Grille hosts ‘Eat Well, Live Well’ networking event BY BARI AUERBACH
To Eat Well Is To Live Well! The motto of BRIO Tuscan Grille extended to include “networking well” when Aventura Young Professionals enjoyed a luncheon in the new restaurant’s private event space bringing casual, white-tablecloth authentic northern Italian cuisine to The Village at Gulfstream Park. BRIO Assistant Manager Rachel Kelley helped welcome a record-breaking turnout of under-45 entrepreneurs invited to discover how the restaurant is helping BRAVO | BRIO Restaurant Group (BBRG) achieve the goal to become the “Best Italian” restaurant company in America by offering guests La Dolce Vita – the good life! Leaders from Melnick, Lilienfeld & Castonguay, CPA’s, Stern Bloom Media, Equinox Fitness Club, Williams Island POA, the City of Aventura and City of Sunny Isles Beach experienced how BRIO is appealing to a broad base of guests including families, empty nesters, business people plus young professionals – an “on-thegrow” demographic represented by the Aventura Marketing Council’s dynamic AYP Committee. Colleagues from the Office of Dr. Frederick Knoll, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, Rub Pediatrics, Florida Chiropractic and Sports Rehab, NationwideGoToBillling.com and Optimar International Realty praised BRIO’s focus on fulfilling the “guest experience” by serving consistently high quality food and providing superior service combined with good value in a unique atmosphere. Hungry for more secret recipes for success, friends from County Line Chiropractic, Edward Jones, Velocity Printing, MultiLingua, Fabian Realty and attorney Eric J. Miller found out BRIO offers classically prepared food items using the highest quality, freshest ingredients and Tuscan cooking methods all while placing an emphasis on generous portions of prime steaks, chops and seafood, madefrom-scratch pasta specialties plus flatbreads. While marveling at BRIO’s appetizing array of specialties including Lasagna Bolognese Al Forno, Shrimp & Lobster Fettuccine, Tuscan Grilled Porkchops and Filetto Di Manzo Toscano, AYP members from FastCare, Fetch Branding, RBC Bank, Welcome & Bienvenidos Magazine, Crowne Plaza Hollywood Beach and Hampton Inn noted BRIO offers a daily dinner and lunch menu; a kid’s menu; extensive dessert and wine list; a Bellini Brunch menu on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a $2.95 Tuscan Taster bar bites menu offered Monday through Friday 3 to 7 p.m. and Monday through Thursday 9 p.m. to close, in

There are ways to lower your summer electric bill Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY With the temperature rising to the high 80s and the low 90s, it means we need to keep cool. The best way is by lowering the thermostat and turning up the ceiling fan, which increases the electric bill and robs our wallets. So how do we stay cool and spend less on electricity in these difficult economic times A great way to reduce your bill is by using a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats can save energy when cooling a house. You also can program the device to know when no one is home or when everyone is asleep. According to the Home Energy Saver site, Energy Star programmable thermostats can save as much as 20-30 percent on your cooling costs by allowing for multiple daily settings and automatically adjusting when the outside temperature changes. Another way to decrease your electric bill is by using the ceiling fan instead of the
air conditioning. Not only can the ceiling fan keep you cool, but you also save energy by using the ceiling fan instead of the air conditioning. If you want to reduce more from your electric bill, you can start looking into your lights and electrical appliances. Compact fluorescent lamps can be helpful in many different areas. These lamps use up to 75 percent less energy than standard bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. The appliance in the house that wastes the most energy is the refrigerator. In fact, the refrigerator alone can account up to 9 percent of the electric bill. If you are looking to buy a new refrigerator, consider going on the Energy Star site and you will be able to look at list for energy-efficient models. By using your thermostat and ceiling fan correctly you will be able to reduce your electric bill and save energy at the same time. You also can help save by purchasing the electrical appliances that are most energy efficient. During these rough times it’s all about saving money and preserving energy.

Fourth generation Subaru Outback is all new for 2010 Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS The Subaru Outback is all new for 2010 and marks the fourth generation of the Sport Utility Wagon. It’s roomier, has bolder styling and delivers better performance, comfort and fuel economy. Launched 15 years ago, this latest version of Subaru’s crossover has an all-new chassis and more ground clearance at 8.7 inches. A new rear double wishbone suspension enhances chassis dynamics and rear cargo space. The new Outback has an upright grille with the circular Subaru badge and wing design as the focal point, offset by dramatic hawk-eye headlights. To the rear, the taillights blend into the rear liftgate and highlight the beltline. The wider track, expressive wheelwell arches, molded lower rocker panels and side cladding all serve to denote an improved off-road capability. At the same time, Subaru engineers have increased interior volume by almost 7 per-
cent in a package that is slightly shorter than the previous model. The wheelbase is 2.8 inches longer and rear seat legroom is improved by almost four inches, but front and rear overhangs are reduced by two inches to maintain vehicle capability. It’s also two inches wider for improved passenger comfort and has more headroom. The 2010 Outback is offered in two basic models with two different power and transmission options in eight configurations: The 2.5i — powered by a revised 170-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine mated to either a new standard six-speed manual transmission or the available Lineartronic CVT. The new 3.6R — powered by a 256-hp 3.6-liter six-cylinder Boxer engine teamed with a five-speed electronic automatic transmission. When equipped with the Lineartronic CVT, the 2010 Outback 2.5i achieves EPA fuel economy estimates of 22/29 mpg, making it the most fuel-efficient Outback ever produced. Compared to the 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine it replaces, the more powerful 3.6-liter Boxer has a similar external size and uses recommended regular-grade fuel, rather than premium as Subaru recommended to achieve rated output figures in the previous 3.0R models.
New Outback has an upright grille with the circular Subaru badge and dramatic hawk-eye headlights.
The 2010 Outback features greater use of high-tensile strength steel to keep any weight increase below 95 pounds on any one model, despite the roomier interior package. All Outback models for 2010 have a larger 18.5-gallon fuel tank. As with all Subarus, the new Outback has Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive as standard equipment. It’s an invaluable performance and safety-enhancing system that comes in three different versions, each tailored to the
specific transmission in the vehicle. Pricing on the 2010 Subaru Outback ranges from $22,995 for the 2.5i 6MT to $31,690 for the top of the line 3.6R Limited 5AT-S. Travel Leaders
David Gedansky TRAVEL TIPS One Seat or Two? People, and airline passengers, come in all sizes, and fitting within the confines of an airline seat can be difficult or uncomfortable for some. However, solutions are available for generously sized air travelers. If you and your travel professional contact the airlines to let your needs be known in advance, the airlines will work with you to accommodate those needs. Some airlines have formal policies regarding larger passengers, such as requiring the purchase of two seats. Some may ask you to purchase a second seat only if the plane is full – otherwise, they will try to place you next to an open seat. While you may only need a few inches of additional space, rather than two entire seats, purchasing a second seat does
ensure that you will have enough room to travel comfortably. Some airlines charge full fare for a second seat, while others will provide a discount. If you purchase a second seat but find that the flight is not full, you may be able to request a refund. If you wait until check-in to purchase a second seat and the flight is full, you may be asked to leave the flight and buy two seats on the next flight. Film director Kevin Smith recently had an experience like this – after purchasing two seats for an Oakland-to-Burbank, Calif., flight, Smith decided to accept a standby seat on an earlier flight. However, only one seat was available, and he was asked to leave the flight. It may help to fly during off-peak hours, when fewer planes are full. Or, reserve a first-class seat, which in some instances may cost less than purchasing two coach seats. If you are a frequent flyer, you may be able to use some of your frequent flyer points to upgrade to first class at no additional cost. Rather than try to figure it all out yourself, consult with your travel professional, who will help you weigh all the options.

Informed Families celebrates with celebrity maitre d’ event BY DUREE ROSS
The 25th anniversary of Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership’s Annual Fundraising Dinner at Joe’s Stone Crab Restaurant was celebrated with all the elements families love most about Miami — great music, amazing food and an exclusive prize. A Tent Party on May 17 at Joe’s kickedoff the event at 6 p.m., featuring appetizers from the famed South Beach landmark restaurant and H20 Bars manned by Miami corporate leaders. Event organizers provided guests a sneak peek at the exclusive new Mercedes Benz SLS model and a chance to win a C-Class model three-year lease, in the color of their choice, courtesy of sponsors Mercedes Benz of Coral Gables and Cutler Bay. A surprise group consisting of MiamiDade County Commissioner Sally Heyman (a real trooper in her wheelchair with a broken ankle); Sen. Gwen Margolis; Kathy Fernandez-Rundle; CBS4’s Jorge Estevez, and former Miami Dolphins from the 1972 team, Dick Anderson and Ed Newman, led party-goers into the dinner at 7:30 p.m.
Guests enjoyed Joe’s signature dishes and legendary service, said honorary chair Marian Krutulis, founder of Gulliver Schools. Peggy B. Sapp, president and CEO of Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership, credits community support with enabling the organization to reach such an event milestone. “Every year, we benefit from an outpouring of generosity from families who care about educating and nurturing their children,” Sapp said. “It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years since Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership joined with Joe’s Stone Crab Restaurant to hold this wonderful event, raising money to prevent drug use and underage drinking. Now, many of the children of our original supporters are parents themselves and our prevention programs are reaching this next generation.” New this year, supporters followed the activities and developments of the Annual Fundraising Dinner on a dedicated website at <www.informedfamiliesjoesdinner.com>. For more information on Informed Families, visit the website at <www.informedfamilies.org>, or call 305-856-4886.

Miami Heart Gallery features new portraits of foster kids BY YANEISY BLANCO
For the third consecutive year, The Children’s Trust is spearheading the Children’s Trust Miami Heart Gallery, an initiative promoting the adoption of foster children in MiamiDade County. This year’s Art Deco themed exhibit is inspired by Miami Beach’s historic Art Deco district where all 44 portraits were photographed by some of the world’s top photographers. The exhibit has a nearly 50 percent adoption rate. The photographs will be on exhibit to the public through Friday, July 2, at HistoryMiami (formerly Historical Museum of Southern Florida), located at 101C W. Flagler St. The museum is open Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, noon-5 p.m., and on the third Thursday of the month the museum closes at 9 p.m. The exhibit subsequently will travel to different venues throughout Miami-Dade County. Many of the participating photographers are award-winning professionals who have received top honors for their art or are known for their celebrity status such as Johnny Núñez, who has photographed such superstars as Jennifer Lopez, Russell Simmons and Magic Johnson. Many others have worked for top publications such as: In Style, Vogue, The New York Times, Self, Rolling Stone, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, Forbes, Mademoiselle, Sports Illustrated, Cosmopolitan,
and Ocean Drive. These renowned photographers donated their time to the project. “Since the initiative began, nearly half of the children showcased have either been adopted or are in the process of being adopted,” said Modesto E. Abety, president and CEO of The Children’s Trust. “We hope to exceed this rate with the help of the community.” The Children’s Trust Miami Heart Gallery is a partnership between The Children’s Trust and OurKids, the private agency responsible for foster care and adoption in Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys. According to the state of Florida, more than 1,500 foster children are eligible for adoption in Florida and approximately 150 of them live in Miami-Dade. These children have been removed from their biological parents for reasons of neglect or abuse with no possibility of family reunification. The Children’s Trust Miami Heart Gallery is complemented by a comprehensive website at <www.miamiheartgallery.org>, which highlights the children’s portraits; videos of each child with information about hobbies, goals and dreams, as well as a video about the making of the exhibit. Photos of the 44 children being featured will be posted on the website in conjunction with the relaunch of the exhibit. Anyone interested in learning more about adopting a foster child should call The Children’s Trust Helpline at 2-1-1 or visit <www.miamiheartgallery.org>.

Proposed Constitutional Amendment 4 is a real conundrum R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Proposed Florida Constitutional Amendment 4, known as “The Growth Amendment,” is a complex issue requiring voters to decide how much control they wish to take back from their government. To vote for the amendment is to say that we do not trust the very people we elect to act on our behalf. To vote against the amendment seems to say that we don’t want to control the future development of our state. This is what we call a conundrum. Florida Hometown Democracy started collecting voters’ signatures in 1996, petitioning the state to place its amendment on the ballot. This amendment, in essence, states that all city and county comprehensive land use plans shall be approved or rejected by the voters of the community in which the proposed change is to take affect. Democracy in action — it sounds good.
But could it work? Are we like the Greek state of old where hundreds of citizens gathered in the public square and voted on an issue? Presidential elections in the U.S. have a hard time getting 60 to 65 percent of the registered voters into voting booths to select their next president. Off year elections run about 10 to 15 percent less than presidential races. To me, the basic question is why do we distrust the very people we elected to make our political decisions for us? If we trusted the candidate or even more the official in office asking us to return them, why would we want to take away the authority we gave them in the first place? If they are incompetent then we should not elect them to office. We should not return them to office if they are running for reelection, and remove them from office by recall if we find them incompetent or corrupt. How many voters would turn out on a Tuesday to vote on extending the Urban Development Boundary (UDB) so that a new Walmart could be built on four acres on the edge of town? I guarantee, not many! How many registered voters have
–– COMMENTARY –– the time to study the complexity of a comprehensive land use change? I am suggesting that few have the time, the energy or the background to study the issue and make an intelligent decision on how to vote. We have a process in place to determine the value of a change in the use of our land. The county has an entire department that studies the issues and makes recommendations to the elected officials we placed in office to vote on the subject. Historically, I can say that the county’s Planning Department’s evaluations of recent proposed land use plan changes have been thorough, accurate and correct. The problem lies with the elected officials, the ones we voted into office who frequently make bad decisions. Our Miami-Dade County commissioners vote on the issue of land use change. They study the recommendations of the Planning
Department. They get input from the state. They consider the issue and vote. The question is: Do they vote on the merits of the issue or do they vote based upon the desires of those that want to see the use of land in our county changed? We must trust the elected officials we placed in office to do the right thing or we must replace them when they come up for reelection. Better we vote on whom we place in office than to vote on the issues that come before them. We appreciate your opinions on this column whether in agreement or disagreement. Please send your comments to (fax number) 305-662-6980 or email to <letters@communitynewspapers.com>. Summer is an exciting time. Kids are out of school, and families and couples are planning their much-anticipated vacations. Experts say the odds are in your favor that you will have an incident-free trip. However, despite how minimal the possibility is of something going wrong, sometimes crime and violence do occur. With the right information and safety precautions, you will know just how to react and where to turn to for help should a critical situation arise. The Miami-Dade Consumer Services Department suggests you beware of these types of scams and follow certain travel safety recommendations.
COMMON RIP-OFFS Pick-pockets. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in unfamiliar territory. Pickpockets generally use guises and accomplices to distract you while relieving you of your valuables. Keep your valuables secure to your body. Consider purchasing a money belt that can be worn beneath your clothes to hide your cash, credit cards and passport. C u r rency exchanges. If you need to exchange money, know what the current rates are before you leave the country. It gives you the power of determining if you’re being ripped off. Use the services of licensed establishments. Do not exchange money with individuals on the street who may not give you valid currency, or worse, might rob you. You should generally avoid currency exchange booths in popular tourist destinations, such as airports and train stations, because they do not offer the best exchange rates. Instead, favor local banks and sometimes hotels. There are always exceptions. Some hotels do offer bad rates. At least, if you know the rate ahead of time, you can make a money-saving decision. Telemarketing travel fraud. Exercise caution before responding to a sales pitch about a great, bargain-priced vacation getaway. The pitch may come in the form of a phone call, letter, email or flyer. However, more often than not, there are strings attached. You may not get everything that was promised to you or you may have to sit through presentations that last for hours. You also might fall victim to a scam that defrauds consumers out of millions of dollars each month. Buying or selling timeshares. Research the company with which you will be doing business. Contact the Miami-Dade Consumer Services Department, Better Business Bureau, state attorney general, and the local consumer protection agency in the state
where a seller or reseller is located. Ask if any complaints are on file. Don’t act on impulse or under pressure. Study the paperwork outside of the presentation environment and, if possible, ask someone who is knowledgeable about contracts and real estate to review it before you make a decision. Ask about fees and timing. It’s preferable to do business with a reseller that takes its fee after the timeshare is sold. If you must pay a fee in advance, ask about refunds. Get refund policies and promises in writing.
CONSUMER SMARTS • If you’re traveling to a foreign country, check the U.S. Department of State’s website to see if they have posted any safety alerts. Prior to your departure, familiarize yourself with the local laws of your destination country, and determine where the U.S. consulate offices and embassies are located. • Use a current-edition travel guidebook. You easily can check one out from your local library or buy one at the store. It’s good to have one on hand because the establishments listed already have been checked out by a travel professional. Such books even warn you about particular dangers in certain areas. • If you’re using a travel agent, make sure the individual and/or company are licensed to operate. Ask family and friends for recommendations. • Consider purchasing trip cancellation insurance. Trip cancellation insurance reimburses you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses — such as airline tickets — if you are forced to cancel a trip due to an unforeseen emergency. Shop around for the best prices and terms. Read the fine print and examine the types of cancellation reasons covered by the contract. Check the expiration times and dates for seeking reimbursements. Read exclusion clauses carefully. For instance, most policies do not cover preexisting health conditions. • Consider purchasing travel health insurance. Even if your health insurance will reimburse you for medical care that you pay for abroad, health insurance usually does not pay for medical evacuation from a remote area or from a country where medical facilities are inadequate. Consider purchasing a policy designed for travelers, and covering short-term health and emergency assistance, as well as medical evacuation in the event of an accident or serious illness. For additional consumer tips, or to check the complaint history of a company, file a complaint or ask consumer-related questions, visit the Miami-Dade Consumer Services Department website at <www.miamidade.gov/csd> or call 305375-3677.

Tips to help teens drive safer this summer BY PHILLIP LYONS Senior Vice President, InSource, Inc.
With school out and teens driving more often, here are tips that will help improve their driving and get them to the mall, beach or club safely. IN GENERAL • Don’t make assumptions about what other drivers are going to do. The only thing you can assume about another driver with a turn signal on is that he has a turn signal on. He might not be turning at all and forgot to turn it off the last time he used it or has changed his mind. • When there’s an obstruction in your lane, wait for oncoming traffic to clear before you pull around. Just because someone’s blocking your lane doesn’t mean you have the right of way in the next or oncoming lane. • Watch out for aggressive drivers and try to stay out of their way. • Don’t do anything that will cause another car’s driver to slam on the brakes such as pulling out in front of him or swerving into his lane. • Avoid making left hand turns across busy intersections that don’t have turn signals. It takes a while to learn how to gauge the oncoming traffic. Better to go down a block or two until you come to a light, or plan a route that doesn’t need this turn. • When driving to a new place, get complete directions before you go, including what exits you need to take. • Don’t talk on your cell phone, text, eat, put on make up or change the radio station while you are driving. Wait until you’re at a complete stop. Taking your focus off the road for even a few seconds can lead to an accident. • Always make sure you have enough
INSURANCE
gas — who knows where you might get stranded.
DRIVING IN RAIN • Turn your headlights on anytime you need to turn your windshield wipers on. It will help your visibility and help other drivers see you. • Double the space you normally leave between you and the next car to allow yourself more space to stop. • Use gentle pressure on the accelerator pedal when starting. If your wheels start to spin, let up on the accelerator until traction returns. • When starting out in bad weather, test your brakes to see how far it takes you to stop. • When braking on wet roads, do not pump brakes if you have ABS (anti-lock) brakes. If you skid with non ABS brakes and your wheels lock up, let up on the brakes to unlock the wheels, then brake gently. • Listen to radio traffic reports and adjust your travel plans accordingly. • Avoid deep puddles. The water can mask a pothole or seep into the engine, causing it to seize up. InSource offers a variety of affordable insurance plans for adult and teen drivers. For more information, call 305-670-5337 or email <plyons@insource-inc.com>.
