Miami International POW WOW 2009 proclaimed great success Hard Rock Café Miami hosts thank-you party "We're going to put the WOW into POW WOW!" was the rallying cry as the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) mobilized the hospitality, tourism and business leaders of MiamiDade County to prepare for the Super Bowl of tourism--International POW WOW. POW WOW is produced by Travel Industry Association (TIA) and is the travel industry's premier international marketplace and the largest generator of Visit USA travel. More than 1,000 volunteers were mobilized to welcome and help direct over 1,500 international tour operators from 70 countries and more than 350 international media through all the meetings, tours and special events that showcased the best destinations that greater Miami and the beaches have to offer. Bill Talbert, CEO and President of the GMCVB, said, "Hosting the most important travel trade show in the U.S. during an economic downturn further solidifies Greater Miami and the Beaches as a leading global tourism destination. This event gave us the opportunity to showcase all the traditional elements that have made Greater Miami so successful over the years plus all the exciting developments in the past 10 years since they were last here. We were only able to do this through amazing partnerships with organizations such as the Aventura Marketing Council and others which helped us put the WOW in POW WOW." Miami's sight, sounds, culture and tropical beauty were on display from May 16 - May 20, starting with a Sunday sunrise brunch at Bayfront Park and an incredible Sunday evening opening-night party as delegates were encouraged to dress in white and experience the many moods and colors of Miami Beach in a breathtaking setting right on the sands of Miami Beach. After a full day of productive meetings on Monday, delegates had the opportunity to enjoy the restaurants of either Coconut Grove or Coral Gables. But that evening, the skies opened up and the rains kept coming…and coming…but the guests took it all in stride. After all, you can't fight Mother Nature! Tuesday evening was the delegates' free night…an opportunity to explore Miami at their leisure. Between Spring Miami Spice, a citywide dining promotion at Miami's finest restaurants and Miami Museum Month, with free admission and special events happening at many of the city's museums, guests were able to relax and enjoy Miami's tropical, cosmopolitan atmosphere. The closing night party, held at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, was an exquisite evening of entertainment, food and camaraderie. Grammy-award-winning singer and guitarist Jose Feliciano performed in one theatre as the sounds of jazz, flamenco and classical violin filled the air on the Arsht Center's beautiful plaza as dancers, artists, muralists and sculptors brought their work to life to the delight of over 2,500 guests.

Miami Dade College North Campus president meets with USDA official to discuss new science complex Miami Dade College's (MDC) North Campus president, Dr. JosĂŠ Vicente (left), recently met with Dr. Joe Leonard Jr., Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to discuss MDC's ongoing collaboration with the USDA. The college and the USDA have collaborated on many projects including the North Campus' new state-of-the-art science complex slated to open in the fall and on the USDA's Food Safety Center of the Americas. Aventura Hospital receives Chest Pain Center Accreditation Aventura Hospital has received full accreditation as a Chest Pain Center by the Society of Chest Pain Centers. On April 28, 2009 the Accreditation Review Committee granted the hospital full Cycle II accreditation with PCI. The Accreditation Review Committee made this decision after conducting a thorough review of the facility, including a recent onsite survey. As an accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI facility, Aventura Hospital meets the quality-of-care measures established by the Society of Chest Pain Centers that are designed to improve the process for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) care. The care of the ACS patient starts from the onset of the patient's symptoms, and includes engagement of Emergency Dispatch Services, Emergency Medical Services, reperfusion, observation unit, cardiac rehab and discharge from the facility. Using this model, outcomes are improved for ACS patients. "Our Emergency Physicians, Cardiologist, Nurses, and cardiac team members have partnered with Fire/Rescue to implement this system, in which a special cardiac team is mobilized and ready to treat the patient at the moment of arrival to our hospital," said Dr. Roman Skylar, Chief of Emergency Services at Aventura Hospital. "With early catheterization, not only are lives saved but complications associated with MI, such as heart failure and sudden death significantly reduced." "We are very proud to earn this important certification from the Society of Chest Pain Centers," said Heather J. Rohan, CEO of Aventura Hospital. "When it comes to your heart, time is muscle. The guidelines that we adhere to as a Chest Pain Center focus on improving timely, quality care for our cardiac patients." Heart attacks are the leading cause of death in the United States, with 600,000 dying annually of heart disease. More than five million Americans visit hospitals each year with chest pain. The goal of the Society of Chest Pain Centers is to significantly reduce the mortali-

ty rate of these patients by teaching the public to recognize and react to the early symptoms of a possible heart attack, reduce the time that it takes to receive treatment, and increase the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment. The Chest Pain Center's protocol driven and systematic approach to patient management allows physicians to reduce time to treatment during the critical early stages of a heart attack, when treatments are most effective, and to better monitor patients when it is not clear whether they are having a coronary event. Such observation helps ensure that a patient is neither sent home too early nor needlessly admitted. With the rise of Chest Pain Centers came the need to establish standards designed to improve the consistency and quality of care provided to patients. The Society's accreditation process insures centers meet or exceed quality-of-care measures in acute cardiac medicine. The Chest Pain Center at Aventura Hospital has demonstrated its expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a set of stringent criteria and completing an on-site evaluation by a review team from the Society of Chest Pain Centers. Key areas in which a Chest Pain Center must demonstrate expertise include: Integrating the emergency department with the local emergency medical system; Assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients quickly; Effectively treating patients with low risk for acute coronary syndrome and no assignable cause for their symptoms; Continually seeking to improve processes and procedures; Ensuring Chest Pain Center personnel competency and training; Maintaining organizational structure and commitment; Having a functional design that promotes optimal patient care; Supporting community outreach programs that educate the public to promptly seek medical care if they display symptoms of a possible heart attack. Senator Gwen Margolis announces for Senate District 35 Sen. Gwen Margolis recently announced that she is a candidate for election in 2010 for the State Senate District 35 seat currently held by Sen. Dan Gelber (D-Miami Beach). Sen. Margolis said she will run to complete the two remaining years in Sen. Gelber's term since he resigned to run for Attorney General. She had held this seat for eighteen years, her term ending in 2008. In 2010, the economic stimulus dollars from Washington will cease and according to economic estimates Florida will have to literally balance billions of dollars in expenditures without any expected new revenue. Sen. Margolis stressed her budgetary experience as key to providing for her district effective representation in this position. Sen. Margolis stressed her

service as Senate President, as Appropriations and as Finance and Tax Chairman and in many leadership capacities in over 34 years of public service, as vitally important to the people of this district. With reappointment forthcoming it is crucial time for the people of this district to have a senator who will focus solely on the interest of her constituency as she has in the past. Sen. Margolis said, "With the resignation of Sen. Gelber to run for Attorney General, it is crucial that people of District 35 be represented by an experienced legislator that has a proven record of working for the people." VIEWPOINT Progress is how we grow food Finding ways to perk up CEO pay BY MARK MULLER Three recent actions by big agribusiness companies to manipulate public opinion have me almost giddy with excitement. After years of dictating the direction of the food system, agribusiness is now taking a reactionary stance. The first sign of this change comes from the world's largest snack-food company, Frito-Lay, which initiated a “Lay's Local” campaign that features 80 “local” farmers from 27 states. Frito-Lay's Web site has a Chip Tracker that allows interested consumers to enter their zip code and product code to find out where the potatoes came from. Although Frito-Lay can't claim the potatoes are locally grown, the advertising campaign hides the corporation behind the aura of U.S. farmers. The second is the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation's announcement of a newly formed Center for Food and Animal Issues. The Center attempts to paint feedlot operators as just another group of people that support animals, just like pet owners, hunters, supporters of zoos and local animal welfare organizations. “Ultimately, our goal is to assure that people who rely on animals, either physically, emotionally or economically, have the right to do so,” said Ohio Farm Bureau Federation executive vice president Jack Fisher. The impetus for the Center came after pork, poultry and veal housing legislation was introduced in state legislatures around the country, and last year's passage of California's Proposition 2, the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act. And finally, the federation of biotech and pesticide companies, CropLife, is protesting an organic garden on the White House lawn. CropLife congratulates First Lady Michelle Obama for her effort to raise food and celebrate agriculture, but takes issue with the garden being organic. Their Web site asks, “What message does that send to the non-farming public about an important and integral part of growing safe and abundant crops to feed and clothe the world crop protection products?” So why am I giddy about these calculated attempts to manipulate public opinion? Because I think about the debate just 10 years ago regarding our food system, and how dramatically the conversation has changed in a positive direction. A decade ago, the hot issue in the agriculture world was genetically modified crops. And despite many legitimate concerns that were raised about health and environmental unknowns, as well as the alarming consolidation of the seed industry,

genetically modified crops swept across the Midwest largely unimpeded. Opponents were portrayed as petty reactionaries oblivious to the challenge of "feeding the world.” This was also a time of incredible devastation in rural America. Crop prices were reaching Depression-era levels, and the promises of the 1996 “Freedom to Farm” bill were nowhere to be seen. I sat through countless forums where agribusiness professionals told farmers to relax; soon the incredible buying power of China will make low crop prices a thing of the past. Unfortunately, we spent years with most commodity prices well below the cost of production, and neither China nor other parts of the world corrected the situation. I never dreamed we could have made as much progress toward community-based food systems as we have in the past decade. “Locally grown” is the hottest food trend for 2009, so hot that a leader in the snack food industry wants to get in on the act. Ten years ago, consumers concerned about the humane treatment of animals had to work hard to find acceptable meat and poultry; now the confined livestock industry is on its heels because of California's Proposition 2, concerns about the overuse of antibiotics and continued problems with manure pollution. Most remarkable has been the explosion in gardening and backyard livestock. CropLife's rather lame objection to an organic garden on the White House lawn reveals the difficult position of the industry. Who can be against local organic production that is efficient, nutritious and costeffective, while at the same time providing exercise and building community? Today, many more people are empowered to make decisions about their family's food, and a lot of hands are getting dirty in the fresh spring soil. Instead of creating space in the corporate food system for alternative food and farming practices, agribusiness is trying to create space for itself in thriving community-based food systems. the least of it. Take Ray Irani, CEO of Occidental Petroleum. Not only was he paid $30 million last year, but he also was given $400,000 to cover the cost of his financial planners. An Occidental spokesperson explained that this perk was beneficial to the corporation because it helped Irani "keep his complete attention on the company's business." What, is Irani so flighty that he can't focus on his job without worrying about his personal money? Maybe so, but - come on - with a $30 million paycheck, couldn't he afford to cover the financial planners out of his own pocket? Meanwhile, some corporations are concerned that these pricey and princely bennies look bad to the public. Not to worry, though - another executive perk that's increasingly popular with CEOs can handle that problem: bodyguards.

As we're learning the hard way, CEOs are not quite the brilliant cockadoodledoos they wanted you and me to think they were. To be fair, however, let's admit that the top honchos are astonishingly creative and bold, in one special aspect of big business leadership: goosing up their own paychecks. Yeah, yeah, I know that the salary and bonuses of corporate chieftains actually dropped 6 percent last year, now averaging a mere $10 million. But, hey, these people are nothing if not clever, so while their pay sagged, they quietly reached into the goodie bag and increased the number and value of perks they receive by 7 percent. The Associated Press surveyed some 300 major corporations and found that the median value of such executive perks as chauffeured limousines, free personal use of the corporate jet, and memberships in exclusive clubs rose to $170,000 last year. That's more than three times the income of most families! And chauffeurs and jets turn out to be

City of Miami Gardens takes the national spotlight on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams The City of Miami Gardens is poised to have recently taken the national spotlight being featured in a recent news series called "What Works", during NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. NBC recognized that in just six short years, Miami Gardens has achieved successes that take other cities decades to achieve. NBC producers shared many reasons for their interest in the city. For example, Miami Gardens residents agreed to a property tax hike and then used the money to establish its own municipal police department with veteran officers from around the country. Since the inception of the Miami Gardens Police Department (MGPD), violent crime dropped 19 percent last year and continues to decline. Also of interest, city officials are cracking down on absentee landlords, targeting substandard housing and buying up foreclosed properties for rehab and resale. They are building community centers for young people and purchasing land to create more parks. Beautifying the city, creating more green space and making the city a safe place for people to live and do business are key elements to the success of Miami Gardens. NBC says that perhaps the city's most

noticeable success has been on the economic front. Since incorporation, Miami Gardens has attracted two new Wal-Marts, a number of bank chains, Office Depot, Family Dollar, Starbucks, Chili's and several major corporations, with a Mercedes-Benz dealership on the way. And its signature annual event, Jazz in the Gardens, has become a major tourist draw attracting 36,000 spectators from around the U.S. and the Caribbean in 2009 (a 34,000 attendance increase from its inaugural year, 2006). A: While I understand that you’re busy preparing a meal you’re not particularly in the mood for being fondled, I don’t believe that your husband is expecting that, as a result, you are going to drop everything and have sex right there and then. Maybe he’s just showing his gratitude to you for making him a delicious meal and believes that a good way to show this is to demonstrate how much he’s attracted to you. When you’re cooking, you’re sort of stuck in one spot, so he can get his arms around you. I wonder if you back away when he tries this at other times, so he waits to get this cuddling in when he has you “on the ropes,� so to speak. That you dislike this attention so much that you would write to me hints at the possibility that there is somthing wrong with your relationship. So examine your reaction to this more carefully, and see if it is part of a larger problem.

My Success in the City of Excellence BY BENTON LAUNERTS As an avid reader of the Aventura News for the past fifteen years, it was a great honor to be invited to be a column writer for this great publication. While I only recently was able to officially call Aventura home via my new condominium residence, I have been calling Aventura home for many more years than that, beginning with my first job as Director of Valet and Transportation at Williams Island back in 1994. Prior to joining Williams Island, my work experience had always been in a “service” related industry (starting as a valet parker twenty years ago), but Williams Island is where I realized I truly enjoyed providing excellence for a living. After a wonderful six years on the Island I came across a new to the area valet parking company called Park One. Park One was from out of state and had just acquired another local company. I saw this as an opportunity to use my experience to help them shine and perhaps create a larger opportunity for myself. I was quickly hired as the Operations Manager and due to the solid client relationships I had built on Williams Island, I was able to bring over six of the Williams Island condominium towers as new clients to PK1. A short time later I was promoted to Director of Marketing and later as Vice

President where I enjoyed nine successful years of helping them grow the company. I am very proud to have been successful in helping that company double its size in just six short years. Aside from having a highly marketable product, I credit a lot of my personal success to the many friends I have made as clients and through networking l. Opportunities like these have allowed me to demonstrate my passion for consistent, excellent service and sincere relationships. As a result of these principles, over the years I have been able to create a personal reputation in the local community as someone who understand and cares about his clients and their needs. There are growing signs of a fledgling recovery

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY Wall Street saw a gain of more than 200 points following one of the biggest bankruptcies in U.S. history as General Motors filed for bankruptcy protection. As a result, some financial forecasters believe that we’ll soon begin seeing the first solid signs of a possible nationwide economic recovery. Also, a key manufacturing index is finally showing signs of new growth for U.S. companies. However, the lagging housing markets still remain a critical part of the U.S. economy. Fortunately, the latest April sales figures from the National Association of Realtors show it’s picking up strength. For the third month in a row, existing home sales are showing positive gains. Existing home sales were up almost 7 percent from March — the biggest monthly gain in almost eight years. The good news also is hitting close to home. The Florida Association of Realtors

reports April home and condo sales improved from earlier this year. April figures show overall sales up 18 percent statewide, with even better gains in South Florida. While Fort Lauderdale home sales climbed by 33 percent, they rose a whopping 98 percent in Miami. So how does one define boosting sales, and why is the housing market improving now? It’s all a combination of rock-bottom bargain prices, more affordable financing and the $8,000 federal income tax credit for new buyers. These improvements are not only boosting housing, but they’re also adding to the growing optimism that Wall Street could be seeing solid signs of an overall economic recovery. Wall Street looks at the economy six to 12 months down the road and must believe things look a little bit brighter.” While the latest reports show some U.S. companies finally getting ready for more growth, Americans are not out of the woods just yet. Many still have a tough summer to face. The biggest problem facing our recovery remains how to improve the job market and get companies strong enough to start hiring again. Hopefully we’ll see the first signs of that turnaround later this fall as billions of dollars in federal job stimulus funds start hitting the streets.

Cooling hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause BY DR. RAMON FERRA

Gynecology and Obstetrics Mount Sinai Medical Center Mount Sinai Aventura For women, menopause is a normal part of aging that can be accompanied by uncomfortable symptoms, such as hot flashes and night sweats. Dr. Ramon Ferra, who is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, shares his insights on hormone replacement therapy and how it can improve a woman’s quality of life. What is Hormone Replacement Therapy? It is the replacement of estrogen and progesterone that is normally produced by a woman’s ovaries. The decline in hormones accompanies menopause, putting an end to menstruation and fertility. During menopause, women often experience hot flashes, night sweats, emotional instability, decreased libido, vaginal dryness and osteoporosis. Hormone replacement therapy can help relieve those symptoms. For women who undergo menopause naturally, estrogen is typically prescribed in combination with progestin to reduce the risk of uterine cancer. Women who undergo menopause as the result of a hysterectomy can take estrogen alone. What are the benefits? Estrogen is the most effective treatment to relieve hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. Hormone replacement therapy also has been shown to prevent the very real threat of osteoporosis. More women who have not received hormone replacement therapy suffer fractured hips than women who have received the therapy. Additionally, there is evidence that short-term hormone replacement therapy has cardiovascular benefits for women who begin the treatment while in their early- to mid-40s, as opposed to women who initiate the treatment later in life. However, more research exploring estrogen use and heart disease in younger postmenopausal women is underway to determine the validity of this evidence. What are the risks of this therapy? Minimal risks include a slight weight gain, nausea and darkening of skin areas in the face. Other risks include stroke, heart attack, blood clots and breast cancer. On the face of it, these risks appear very seri-

However, if you take a group of menopausal women who have manageable health issues and are not taking hormones, the risk of their developing any of those illnesses is about 30 cases per 10,000 women. The risk goes up to 40 cases per 10,000 for women who are taking hormones. So, yes, there is a rise in the risk, but it is not astronomical. Am I a candidate for hormone replacement therapy? The best candidates are those who are beginning to feel the symptoms of menopause and have an active lifestyle with a minimum to no other health factors or risk factors for hormone replacement therapy. Hormone replacement therapy is not recommended for women who have precancerous cells or have a strong family history of breast cancer. Women who are on multiple medications, have problems such as heart, lung, kidney or liver disease or have had previous episodes of thromboembolism also are not considered candidates. What types of hormone replacement therapy? Depending on a woman’s menopausal symptoms and her medical history, she might take estrogen in the form of a pill, patch, vaginal cream, or slow-releasing vaginal suppository ring. Her doctor will help determine the best course of treatment to minimize the risk of side effects while maximizing the benefits of therapy. It also is important to be active and exercise while using the minimum dosage to control symptoms. Monthly breast exams and regular mammograms also are essential. Women who have a family history of breast cancer and experiencing minimal menopausal symptoms may consider vaginal cream, as the dosage is small and there is no need to apply it everyday, as would be the case with a pill. However, if she has ever had breast cancer herself, then even the cream would not be an option. How do I get started? The first step is to discuss your symptoms and your medical history with your doctor. From there, he or she can help you determine what type of therapy will safely help you experience the best quality of life possible during menopause. Building Blocks BY PATRICIA C. FRANK Remember when you were a child and played with blocks? Remember all of the different things you could build? The first and most important thing to build is your Self, your essence, your being, and your personality. Some of the building blocks available to you are; self-confidence, self-assurance, self-awareness, self-control, self-determination, self-discipline, self-expression, self-knowledge, self-reliance, self-respect, self-sufficiency, and self-improvement Of all of the building blocks, the building block that is most critical to your wellbeing is self-esteem. Esteem is the respect and regard you hold for someone or something because of their worth and value. Self-esteem comes from your core beliefs. It is a feeling that you have about yourself. Self-esteem is your opinion of who you are as a person and how you act and react to others. It is an expression of your confidence and satisfaction with your self. It is a recognition of your own worth. There is another version of self-esteem that you do not want build upon. That is low self-esteem. There is a simple way to

determine what block you have. When things go wrong you can externalize and blame the circumstances or you can internalize and blame your self. People who blame themselves have low self-esteem. They think that they are worthless and unlovable. Low self-esteem can be overcome. These feelings and beliefs come from improper and inaccurate thoughts. These thoughts can be revised and reprogrammed. Psychology focuses on the self and enhancing the self through treatment. Statistics show that psychotherapy does improve self-esteem. When you buy your children a set of building blocks make sure you include selfesteem. It is a special gift you can give your child. It is the gift that keeps on giving long after they stop playing with blocks. You do not give your child self-esteem by praising them disproportionately. Your child will develop it by achieving the goals you set and by performing within the guidelines you establish. It does not come from the outside. Smart cookie? BY BARI AUERBACH Experts weigh in on trendy cookie diets Trade meals for cookies, and lose weight it’s a dieter’s fantasy. The lesson here is portion control. But will results stick? According to Bodybuilding Weekly and the Los Angeles Times, promotions for allthe-rage “cookie diets” claim you can lose as much as 15 pounds a month on their programs. But before you decide to spend a lot of dough, here are some of the pros and cons associated with cookie diets a/k/a just plain “kooky!” Most people who have tried diet cookies concur they’re far from tasting as delicious as Mrs. Field’s or favorite Oreos. Even Dr. Sanford Siegal, inventor of the original diet cookie more than 30 years ago concedes, “I could have made the cookie taste much better, but I don’t want people to overeat them. That would defeat the whole purpose.” The basic concept of cookie diets including Dr. Siegal’s, Smart for Life, Hollywood Cookie and Soypal is to facilitate caloric restriction and portion control by replacing one or two meals a day with cookies. Then, like the Slimfast system, dieters are supposed to have a “sensible and nutritious” regular meal (usually for dinner). The cookie diets also share the key component of “hunger suppression” with special ingredients including protein, fiber and soy byproducts that can make you feel full. While advocates claim cookie dieters can benefit from learning the importance of eating small meals frequently throughout the day as well as maintaining calorie balance and portion control, some nutritionists agree people won’t stick with a very lowcalorie diet for very long. “It is not a portion-control message, but rather a quick-fix message that comes from these diets,” says James Hill, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Denver. “People go on a rapid weight loss diet and find they get

tired of it and then go back to eating the way they did before…The key is finding a way to eat and exercise that you can do forever.” So should you consider having chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies for lunch instead of a salad? Some of these testimonials may help you decide: “The eating habits I learned on the cookie diet are the best I can imagine. I eat absolutely no refined sugars any more, I eat high protein, lots of vegetables, and I learned to eat small meals through the day instead of three giant meals.” “My primary care doctor says I am in the best health she’s seen since I was 19 years old and it’s because of the weight loss. LET’S TALK CARS The German auto manufacturers are getting some pretty amazing results with their diesel technology, and BMW’s 335d Sport Sedan is just the latest example. With a 3.0-liter, 265 hp sequential twinturbo inline six-cylinder diesel engine under the hood, a powerplant that generates 425 pound-feet of torque, the 335d Sport Sedan rockets from 0 to 60 mph in six seconds flat. Yet, even with that kind of stellar performance, BMW claims the 335d Sedan is the most fuel efficient BMW ever sold in the United States, delivering 23 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Equally impressive is the fact that it will travel almost 600 miles on a single tank of diesel fuel. The 335d is a member of the BMW3 Series, which is made up of a collection of rear-wheel drive sedans (AWD is an option), coupes, convertibles and wag-

ons, all available with different engines and a broad range of options, including paddle shifters on the steering wheel and a six-speed automatic transmission. All models share mechanical components and compact exterior dimensions, though there are differences in body style or exterior design. The sedan is the best seller and most recognizable. It has the familiar BMW double-kidney shaped grill and clear covered double-beam headlights that wrap around the fenders and taper to a point.
