Saving Americans by saving money

Doping racehorses to win fast bucks

BY ALISON WEIR

BY JIM HIGHTOWER

Imagine you could help people abroad by keeping your money home. Imagine you could help bring peace to the Middle East, build a safer world, and alleviate massive misery. Imagine you could begin to eliminate the requirement for long airport lines, the justification for frisking old ladies, the alleged need to discard our most cherished principles in a quest for 'security' against an ill-defined enemy. Imagine you could save America. You can - by ending our $7 million per day gift to Israel. Following are six reasons to end this enormous foreign expenditure: 1. We can't afford it. Businesses are failing; schools are closing; we owe more money than many think we can ever pay back. We need to get our financial house in order. We are trimming our personal, governmental, and business spending. We need to trim this as well. 2. It is a failed policy. Rather than improvement, during our six decades of more aid to Israel than to any other nation, we have seen escalating regional violence, numerous wars (many involving Americans), and growing global instability. It is time to stop sending good money after bad. 3. It fuels the tragic cycle of violence. Empowered by our money, Israeli expansionism consistently initiates renewed violence, costing numerous lives. Israel struck first in all its wars except one. Historically, it was the initiator of conflict. The state of Israel was created in 1948 through the ethnic cleansing of Christians and Muslims, who had originally composed 95 percent of the inhabitants of land that colonists wanted for a Jewish-only state. In the current round of conflict that began in 2000, Israeli forces killed 140 Palestinian men, women, and children in the Palestinian Territories before a single Israeli in Israel was killed - before any suicide bombers or Gazan rockets. In the past 8.5 years, 6,348 Palestinians have been killed by Israelis (1,487 of them children), and 1,072 Israelis have been killed by Palestinians (123 of them children). In over 96 percent of the actions that ended periods of calm, it is Israel that broke the peace. 4. It prevents peace. With seemingly endless money coming from unaware American taxpayers, Israeli leaders feel there is no need to negotiate a compromise on how Jews,

Christians, and Muslims will once again share their Holy Land. As a result, “peace talks” have consistently been a sham. 5. It is used illegally. It is illegal to use American military aid offensively. Yet, Israel regularly uses American weapons in aggression against civilian populations. Israel's illegal use of American cluster bombs in 1978, 1982 and again in 2006 caused the amputation of thousands of mangled limbs. Israel holds the world record for violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions - at least 32 (Iraq violated a dozen). Israel routinely violates Geneva Conventions; in 1978 the London “Times” exposed Israel's torture of Palestinians. In 2002 “Foreign Service Journal” detailed its torture of Americans. Today, it holds 10,756 Palestinian men, women, and children. Palestinians hold one Israeli. 6. It is counter to U.S. interests and imperils Americans. Policy experts have long opposed supporting Israel. Harry Truman's Secretary of State George Marshall advised against sacrificing U.S. interests for an election. Like politicians from both parties ever since, Truman sacrificed them. The 9-11 Report identified support for Israel as a primary cause of hatred for the United States. The Pentagon's Defense Science Board report found: “Muslims do not 'hate our freedom,' but rather, they hate our policies. The overwhelming majority objections to what they see as one-sided support in favor of Israel and against Palestinian rights…” Israel's history of expansionism, combined with its possession of more than 200 nuclear weapons, provides motivation for regional neighbors to acquire these as well. When we end our blank check to Israel, we will go a long way toward ending terrorism. We will have stopped financing one of the world's principal terrorist states, and will have removed motivation for those suffering from Israeli ruthlessness to target us as its funder. Numerous surveys have shown that the vast majority of Americans, across party lines, don't want to take sides on IsraelPalestine. It's time to listen to them, and keep our money at home. -Former journalist Alison Weir is executive director of If Americans Knew, a think-tank that focuses on Israel-Palestine. www.ifamericaknew.org

Remember the old folk song about a horse named Stewball? "Stewball was a race horse/ and I wish he were mine/ He never drank water/ He always drank wine." Gosh, those were the good ol' days for racehorses. Today, they're "drinking" exotic cocktails containing corticosteroids, hyaluronate sodium, and even - get this cobra venom! Actually, horses are not drinking these painkillers, anti-inflammatories, and stimulants. Rather, owners and trainers are injecting the substances into their racing steeds. I'm not talking about nags and losers running on third-rate tracks, but top-of-theline thoroughbreds, such as those running in the Kentucky Derby and other premier races. It is now common for billionaire owners to medicate their multimillion-dollar animals with drugs that cover up their ailments and fragilities, making the horses themselves vulnerable to painful and fatal breakdowns on the track. This is one reason that there are about three breakdowns a day in our country more than double the rate in England and Australia, where such careless doctoring is

prohibited. The motivation of those in charge of these animals' welfare has become a selfish desire to win at all cost to reap big purses and glory. Training these delicate horses has become "chemical warfare," says one prominent breeder. Indeed, in a survey of 20 owners or trainers of horses intending to run in the recent Kentucky Derby, only three would reveal the veterinary records showing what substances were injected into their animals. Most claimed this was proprietary information, one actually invoked his horse's right to privacy, and one pleaded ignorance, saying: "I'm a mortgage banker. I don't know what goes on back there [in the horse stalls]." What's going on, of course, is a race in which ethics is losing to the fast buck. As one of the honest owners says, "[We] should be taking care of these horses. We're the ones that speak for them." -For more information on Jim Hightower's work - and to subscribe to his award-winning monthly newsletter, The Hightower Lowdown, visit www.jimhightower.com <http://www.jimhightower.com>

Historically Yours BY BOB DIAMOND LINCOLN AND THE JEWS Friday evening April 14, 1865, was a joyous time for Jews as they celebrated the Passover holiday and the end of the Civil War, as five days earlier Gen. Robert E. Lee had surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox. Many Rabbis’ gave a sermon that night about freedom for all enslaved people. By morning, however, word spread like wildfire that Lincoln had been assassinated. Jews went into mourning, as though they had lost a member of their family. Jews remembered that it was Lincoln who came to their rescue at a time of massive anti-Semitism during the Civil War, when Gen. Grant issued the most sweeping anti-Jewish regulation in American history, known as Executive Order #11, which read: “The Jews, as a class, violating every regulation of trade established by the Treasury Department, are hereby expelled from the department (four western states) within twenty-four hours and any Jew returning will be arrested.” Having been falsely

accused of cotton smuggling in Grant’s western territory, Jews finally received the real reason for their anti-Semitic expulsion, “Because you are Jews and not a benefit to the Union.” According to historian Bertram Korn (American Jewry and the Civil War), Cesar Kaskel, from Paducah, Kentucky, with sons in the Union army and supportive documents from local citizens, rushed to Washington to meet Lincoln. After listening to Kaskel, Lincoln, who had no prior knowledge of Grant’s Order, introduced a heartwarming Biblical reference to the Old Testament: “And so the children of Israel were driven from the happy land of Canaan.” Kaskel replied, “That is why we have come unto Father Abraham’s bosom, asking protection.” Lincoln responded, “And this protection they shall have at once.” He revoked Grant’s Order. Despite the Congressional Act of July 22, 1861, that allowed each army regiment one chaplain who had to be an ordained Christian clergyman, Lincoln appointed Jacob Frankel as the first Jewish military chaplain. In 1901, Solomon Schechter, president of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, said of the Great Emancipator: “We may be grateful to God for having given us such a great soul as Lincoln.”

O'Connell & Goldberg principals Jim O'Connell and Barbara Goldberg discuss creative public relations PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE JO: Since much of what we do involves interaction with media, a good portion of our staff is comprised of former journalists who effectively interact with reporters, editors and producers. Our team is rounded out with video production specialists, special event coordinators and researchers.

Q: What is "creative" public relations? BG: Now, more than ever, effective public relations must cut through the clutter to grab consumer attention and deliver client results. There are so many similar businesses and products competing for recognition and support from the same audiences. A successful campaign can't rely entirely on tried and true communication methods of the past. Our strength lies in the ability to view clients' needs from entirely different perspectives and to develop campaigns that reflect their unique nature.

Q: How has the economic downturn affected your business? BG: It's difficult to find anyone who hasn't been affected by the current turn of events, but most of our longstanding clients, as well as new ones who've come aboard, realize the importance of keeping their name out there, especially at a time when their competition may be pulling back. They also know that the tide will eventually turn and don't want to be starting again from scratch when it does.

Q: Who are some of your clients? JO: We are blessed with a roster of blue-chip clients, including Aventura-based interests like Turnberry Associates and Aventura Mall, the new W Ft. Lauderdale, Miami Children's Hospital and Foundation, Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza, MedVance Institute, Zyscovich Architects, Continental Group, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation and a host of real estate developers, accounting firms and retailers throughout the U.S., among others. Notable past clients include Macy's, Miami Dolphins, Mayors Jewelers, Atlantis, Paradise Island, Tiffany & Co., Tenet Healthcare and several Super Bowl Host Committees. Q: What's the secret to your success? BG:

Most of our clients have been with us for

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER

Can’t go it alone Q: My wife and I have two children,4 1/2 and 1 year old. The baby has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy. My wife has become so involved and consumed by this that our sex life is nonexistent. We don’t even sleep together anymore. To make matters worse, I currently hold a low-paying, menial job. I now have a chance to relocate to the West Coast for a high-paying job that I have been training for. My wife refuses to relocate. She feels comfortable in this small town and living a mile away from “Mama. She is willing to raise our children fatherless, preferring her close social niche of cohorts and family to the father of our children. Do I still go West to provide and earn

a better living for my family, hoping eventually she will follow? Or do I stay here in this dead-end job with no possibility for a future and a better life? A: Your situation is a difficult one. I can certainly understand your position, wanting to go to where there is a better career for you. But your wife’s point of wanting to be close to her family is also valid considering the difficulties there are ginfg to be in raising your younger child. Her mother and other relatives are going to procide valuable assistance. I don’t think you can come to a definite decision about this by yourselves. Some couples become closer when faced with a problem such as yoours, but you are growing apart. This makes me wonder whether your wife blames you, justifiably or not, for the condition of your child. The two of you need counseling, an arbitrator who can sort out what is really going on. Only when you have that information can you make a final decision. “Dr. Ruth’s pregnancy Guide for Couples (Routledge) is Dr. Ruth Westheimer’s latest book, Have a question for Dr. Ruth? Aventura Young Professionals recently enjoyed a high power/high protein networking luncheon hosted by The Grill on the Alley at Aventura Mall - serving the finest in prime steaks, chops and fresh seafood and classic cocktails. The Grill's general manager David Rufener welcomed a great turnout of under-45 over achievers invited to discover the renowned restaurant's "famously American" concept reminiscent of old-time grills in New York and San Francisco. Leaders from Aventura Mall, Northern Trust, Aventura Hospital and Bloomingdale's were especially impressed by The Grill's recipe for success. Originally opened in Beverly Hills in 1984, The Grill is continuing its legendary traditions under the leadership of CEO Philip Gay in major cities including San Jose, Hollywood, Chicago, Dallas - and now Aventura. Friends from IDEA, Williams Island POA, Aventura Mall, Bookkeepers USA and Melnick, Lilienfeld & Castonguay, CPA's, agreed The Grill on the Alley is conveniently located in the mall's courtyard piazza, featuring more than 7,000 square-feet of indoor and patio seating for up to 250 diners. Open for lunch and dinner, The Grill also offers an extensive catering and take-out menu ideal for impressing clients or taking a break from firing up your own grill this summer. Beyond rave reviews from culinary critics, teams from BNY Mellon, Stern Bloom Media, Southeast Computer Solutions, Double Click Companies, Florida Breast Cancer Coalition Research Foundation, The Alexander Hotel, Fabian Realty, Olympia Gym and the Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort were especially impressed by The Grill's honors and accolades, including just being named "Best Restaurant for Service" in the New Times "Best Of" edition. Inducted into the Nation's Restaurant News Fine Dining Hall of Fame in 1995, The Grill is also a member of the

ing several successful affinity campaigns. Prevor completed her master of social work at Columbia University and her master of arts at the Jewish Theological Seminary. She received a bachelor of arts from the University of Pennsylvania. "This difficult economic environment has put significant pressure on fundraising efforts for not-forprofit organizations. Go Green with South Florida Commuter Services South Florida Commuter Services, a program of the Florida Department of Transportation, has helped thousands of commuters enjoy the benefits of alternative modes of transportation. By promoting carpooling, vanpooling and riding mass transit, SFCS not only cuts commuting costs for many in South Florida, but also helps the environment. Less cars on the highway means less money spent on gas and less strain on the environment. "Commuting to and from work is a primary cause of increased traffic congestion and air quality problems in many areas across the United States," says Jim Udvardy, project director for SFCS. "Reducing the number of cars commuting during rush hour can reduce traffic and improve air quality. In fact, if half of all employees would share the ride, 15 million cars would be removed from the road daily." Considering the high gas prices, distressed economy and South Florida's heavy traffic congestion, alternative modes of transportation have never made more sense. Some of the carpoolers registered with SFCS say they are saving $100-$200 per month by sharing the ride

with other commuters. Additionally, using mass transit and/or sharing the ride have proven to be real stress busters for commuters who have grown wary of sitting in bumper to bumper traffic. Studies show that employers love carpoolers because they tend to get to work on time; they arrive in a better mood and less parking is needed. An added benefit is that employees can make calls and get some work done in the car or van to and from work. It's a going-green plan that means more green for everyone involved. For more information, visit 1800234RIDE.com or call 1-800-234RIDE (7433).

Never Pay Another Expensive Repair Again

Denise Rubin Talks Real Estate

Short Sale BY DENISE RUBIN A short sale is a transaction where the Lender agrees to accept less than the than the mortgage amount owed on the property. Make one thing clear, a short sale is not short... 3-6 months is the general time frame to expect to complete the process. A homeowner would elect to do a short sale when they can no longer afford their mortgage and the costs associated with homeownership. A short sale will allow a homeowner to forego foreclosure and potential bankruptcy. A bank will consider a short sale because it is a better alternative so they can get “non performing” loan off their books as quickly as possible. When a homeowners stops paying on their loan, there are considerable ramifications. Often it is not just the loan that is delinquent, but the taxes, insurance, and condo maintenande, or HOA fees are not being paid. A short sale is more forgiving on a Sellers credit than a foreclosure. Many short sales come about when the Seller owes more on the property than they can sell it for. A short sale can be done if there is more than one mortgage on a property. The mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act was signed by

President Bush on December 20, 2007. This act ensures that any deficiency written off as part of the short sale will not be taxed. A Seller however can not profit from a short sale. No Lenders will allow a Seller to make money when they are being forced to lose money. The Lender agrees to accept less than is owed on the original loan amount as full payment. The Seller walks away from the transaction with no money but avoids foreclosure. The Seller does have to prove hardship and must take into consideration that those working for the bank are doing just that working for the bank. So, it is important for a Seller to have advice and help from knowledgeable professionals. The process is long, complicated, tiring and takes much dedication and perseverance. There is continuous back and forth and a seasoned Real Estate Professional is imperative. A Realtor with successful short sale experience and many completed transactions can expedite this lengthy, difficult, tedious process for you. Call Denise Rubin Realty to accomplish your Real estate goals. We are short sale specialists. We will make the short sale process more pleasant for the Seller and we will get the short sale closed! Buyers, we will get you great deals to take advantage of the æshort sale opportunities”.

Gardening BY PATRICIA FRANK PSY.D., LMHC You are a part of the earth, the planet on which you live. You have many things in common with the earth. You share many of the same elements. The earth, among other things, is made up of dirt and soil. It is a very fertile place. It is a garden where anything that is planted will grow. Your mind is also very fertile. Whatever is planted there will grow. As a child many thoughts were planted in your subconscious, the garden of your mind. Some of these messages told you who you were. They defined your persona by telling you whether you were a good or bad girl or boy. They might have informed you that you were clumsy or stupid or careless. Some of the messages told you what you could and could not do. These injunctions were very subtle and very powerful. An injunction comes from someone in authority. In the law it is a judicial order restraining or compelling someone to do or not do something. These admonitions were usually negative such as you are not allowed to be happy; you are not allowed to take care of yourself and you are not allowed to meet your own needs. You could have been taught not to want anything, not to ask for anything, and not to feel any emotion when you were disappointed. Other messages might be; “Don’t think,” “don’t show anger,” “don’t

enjoy sex,” and “don’t be aggressive or assertive.” The list is endless and varied. These messages were never spoken directly; they were communicated to you in very subtle and covert ways. You absorbed them because you trusted your caregivers and you had no way to know the truth. The information your parents transmitted to you was probably inaccurate. They were victims of their own limitations and were satisfying their own needs for comfort and safety. It is important to realize that the attributes they assigned to you were about them and not about you. Their injunctions were for their own protection. As an adult, you are not just the garden you are also the gardener. You need to get at the root of the attributes and injunctions that are buried in your subconscious and dig them out just like you would dig out a plant in a garden. These old attributes and injunctions can determine your destiny and can prevent you from achieving your full potential. As the gardener you can improve and cultivate your garden. Weed out all the old negative, untrue thoughts and sow new positive thoughts and messages. Let them germinate. As you nurture them, they will nurture you. With care and love the tender shoots you have planted will sprout. Your garden and you will be a thing of beauty.

Ticketmaster goes paperless: Strategy to take on scalpers

Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY Ticketmaster is using a new strategy to take on scalpers — specifically, getting rid of the actual tickets. The ticketing company is going paperless on singer Miley Cyrus’ upcoming 45-show fall tour — the first of its kind to sell exclusively paperless tickets. Concert-goers will enter the show using credit cards they purchased the tickets with, making it impossible to resell or transfer them. That tactic has put resale vendors on the defensive, charging that the paperless system will cause delays and possibly pose safety risks to fans. They also claim that the ticket agency will extend its monopoly over prices by elim-

inating the secondary market. While most states have legalized scalping, promoters object to the high markups scalpers are able to charge, which they don’t share in. Scalpers also predict longer lines and some even think that the system would increase the chance for sexual predators to prey on young fans with the promise of entry into a show. Promoters have said, however, that they will have extra staff at concert venues to assist with any problems. Cyrus’ 2007 tour was a driving force behind the experiment in paperless tickets. Ticketmaster claimed that scalpers illegally snapped up tickets for the Hannah Montana star’s shows with special software that gave them an advantage over normal fans. Eat more...Cheat less BY BARI AUERBACH Did you know male and female fitness/bodybuilding champions often eat as much as eight times a day to attain and maintain lean, muscular physiques? Today, nutritionists and weight-loss experts agree that frequently eating small meals and snacks is preferable to limiting yourself to three large meals or cutting calories to the point of virtual starvation. According to Jorge Cruise, author of The 3-Hour Diet, the book about eating the right foods every three hours to achieve weight loss goals, the biggest mistake you can make when trying to lose weight is to skip meals. “When you skip meals throughout the day your blood sugar plummets, causing you to overeat - and when you overeat, you gain weight,” Cruise says. “When you eat the right foods every three hours you will not feel hungry. Why? Because you will keep your blood sugar level stable and keep your appetite under control. When you’re in control of your appetite, you’re in control of your weight.” Can you also boost your metabolism by eating more? Well, not really more food, but rather “more often.” Experts say that eating at least six small meals a day can help you slim down your waistline. According to the American Journal of Epidemiology, people who eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day are 45% more likely to beat obesity than their “3 square meals a day” counterparts. What are the right foods for breakfast, a midmorning snack, lunch, an afternoon snack, dinner, and an optional nighttime snack? Optimally, there should be a low glycemic carb, lean protein, and “good” fat on your plate every time you eat. You should also follow portion size guidelines (for example, veggies should fill half your plate, carbs should be the equivalent of a Rubik’s Cube, and protein should be the size of a deck of cards). A suggested grocery list is: (Proteins): Boneless/skinless chicken breast, turkey, turkey bacon, easy to pour egg whites in cartons, cans of white tuna in water, wild

salmon, low fat cottage cheese and yogurt, protein powder for shakes (great tasting flavors of Jay Robb whey and egg white protein are available in individual packets or jars at Whole Foods Market); (Low Glycemic Carbs): Plain flavored oatmeal, brown rice, sweet potatoes, Ezekiel breads, quinoa; (Fibrous Carbs): Spinach, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms, Romaine lettuce; (Fruits): Apples, pears, strawberries; (Fats): Egg yolks, avocado, almond butter, flaxseed oil, olive oil. Drinks, condiments and desserts that are also good choices for your list include Crystal Light, Arizona diet teas, Swiss Miss Milk Chocolate Fat Free with Calcium Hot Cocoa Mix, General Foods International Coffee Sugar Free French Vanilla Cafe Coffee Drink Mix, Starbucks iced grande Café Americano with Splenda, Walden Farms no calorie dressings, sugar free Smucker’s jelly, balsamic vinegar, mustard, salsa, sugar free Jello and popsicles, Skinny Cow low fat fudge bars. Preparing meals and snacks frequently throughout the day can take a little extra time and planning. But it’s worth it to eat more – cheat less and ultimately reach or maintain weight loss goals.

Bnai Zion Offers an Opportunity for Growth BY ELAINE GLASTEIN I have been writing for a few issues now. If you have been reading you are probably getting comfortable with our Charitable Gift Annuity program. I cannot stress in greater words that this is a smart thing to do for you, for your family and for Israel. This is how this program can work for you. Let us say you decide to take $10,000 and purchase a Charitable Gift Annuity from Bnai Zion Foundation. The amount of interest you receive will depend on your date of birth. If you are 80 you can receive a rate of 8.4% or a check for $840 each year. You can take it monthly, quarterly or annually. Your payments last as long as you live. Here’s the best part: you receive a tax deduction for the gift and a portion of your payments are also tax deductible. All this financial benefit and knowing you have helped those in need in the end is very attractive to many seniors I know. Giving and sharing are two words that I call “healers. Whether you give or share, the feeling you get from the act is the same as medicine for both the body and the mind. We live with ourselves and whether we admit it or not, our health can depend on our attitude to our surroundings and to our fellow man. Of

course, attitude also encompasses what we think of ourselves. When you find a way to benefit humanity that also helps you live more comfortably, life then becomes a gift of a different meaning. Come share your heart with Israel buy purchasing a charitable gift annuity. It automatically initiates you into our “Beach Chapter. We have members from each of the following: Miami Beach, Sunny Isles Beach, North Miami Beach, Hallandale Beach and Aventura. Every other month or so we have lunch at a very special place, talk about current events, Israel, our projects and enjoy each other’s company. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, call me at 305 949.0076 or email me at eileen.glastein@bnaizion.org There are many exciting things happening at Bnai Zion Foundation. Your support from a Charitable Gift Annuity can benefit you right now with high interest and tax deductions and our important humanitarian work in Israel for the future. To see the projects we are working on, I hope you will take a few minutes and visit our website at www.bnaizion.org. Stay tuned to the Aventura News for an announcement about a special partnership in education between Bnai Zion Medical Center in Haifa and Aventura Hospital, right here. Contact me so you can be a part of our exciting mission. 305 949.0076.

2010 Insight is Honda’s all-new hybrid entry Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The 2010 Honda Insight hybrid is a big step in the right direction toward putting more fuel-efficient automobiles on the highway. Strangely enough, the Insight, with its aerodynamic design, looks a lot like the Toyota Prius, and that’s probably intentional. But there are differences — the Insight is lighter and smaller and has less interior space, but the Prius gets better gas mileage (40/43 mpg for the Insight; 48/45 mpg for the Prius). The Insight is a five-passenger, fivedoor vehicle and it’s offered in three models: LX ($19,800) — comes with automatic climate control, power windows, outside mirrors and central locking; a fourspeaker 150-watt, multi-media-capable sound system including speed-sensitive

volume control; a multi-information display showing, among other data bits, fuel economy, average speed, exterior temperature and a real-time map of the hybrid system’s energy flows; tilt-and-telescope steering wheel; manual driver’s seat height adjustment, and 60/40-split, fold-down rear seatback. EX ($21,300) — adds cruise control, paddle shifters, front center console with armrest and storage bin, driver and passenger seatback map pockets, map lights, and two speakers and a USB connector to the sound system. EX with Navigation ($23,100) — includes a navigation system with 6.5inch screen, voice recognition, routing and guidance, and Bluetooth handsfree capability. The Insight is powered by something Honda calls an Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system, which basically is a 1.3liter i-VTEC gasoline engine paired with a 10-kilowatt electric motor. There’s also a built-in Ecological Drive Assist System — or Eco Assist — that enhances operation even more, while at the same time provides feedback related to individual driving styles.

Honda Insight has a distinctive five-door aerodynamic design.

The IMA system can operate exclusively on electric power in certain lowto mid-speed cruising conditions and it can deactivate cylinders during deceleration. It also has an idle-stop feature when the vehicle is stationary. An onboard 10.6-gallon fuel tank gives the Insight a traveling range of more than 400 miles. Pressing the ECON button can further enhance vehicle efficiency: Throttle control, CVT operation, idlestop duration, air conditioning and cruise-control operation. Eco Assist also provides feedback about driving style via a three-dimensional background within the

speedometer. The background changes colors from green to blue to reflect how efficiently or inefficiently you are accelerating or braking. The results are continuously tracked as fuel-economy ratings are shown per drive cycle and on a lifetime basis in the form of plant-leaf graphics that appear in a Multi-Information Display (MID). Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. He may be contacted by calling 305-662-2277, ext. 261, or by addressing email correspondence to <LetsTalkCars@aol.com>.

Alzheimer’s Disease Educational Seminar to Focus on the Caregiver BY LORI FAGENHOLZ “Focus on Caregiving,” an educational program designed to provide information, insight and training for family members, professionals and others involved in the care of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, is scheduled for Tuesday, June 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Miami Heart Institute, 4701 North Meridian Ave., Miami Beach. “Almost 10 million Americans provide uncompensated care for a person with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia,” said Daniel Varon, M.D., associate medical director of the Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders at Mount Sinai Medical Center. “Many caregivers experience high levels of stress and negative effects on their health,

employment, income and financial security.” The program will include an update on Alzheimer’s disease treatment and research; medication and drug interaction; enhancing your memory through nutrition; reducing stress with music therapy; selfhealing with Yoga; and relaxation through hypnosis. Part of the Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative (ADI) Caregiver Educational Series, the program is co-sponsored by the Wien Center; the Miller School of Medicine University of Miami Memory Disorders Center; Florida Department of Elder Affairs ADI; and the Alliance for Aging, Inc., South Florida Chapter. Program registration is $10 per person and seating is limited. For more information, or to register, please call 305-6742543.
