"Community Pride is why we do it"‌ Rodney Barreto, Super Bowl Host Committee Chairman When I had the opportunity to volunteer again as Chairman of the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee, I jumped at the chance; it's because I love South Florida. Now my community pride is at an all-time high. Here's why: Three members of our Super Bowl Host Committee, Bill Talbert, Nan Markowitz and David Silverstein, recently joined civic leaders for a bus trip, but not just any bus trip. This was the Community Image Advisory Board Inspection Tour, organized by Miami-Dade County. That tour is designed to show off the many improvements being made around Miami-Dade County for some of the world's biggest events, including last month's Travel Industry POW WOW, the Pro Bowl, and of course, the Super Bowl in February 2010. The three members of our Host Committee all were very impressed, and so am I. At a time when our country is in a recession, these projects help South Florida attract events like the Super Bowl, which pump hundreds of millions of dollars into our local economy and create jobs. The 2010 Super Bowl at Dolphin Stadium will be our record breaking 10th here in South Florida. No other community has hosted more. But we're not stopping there. We are already bidding for the 2013 Super Bowl. Sprucing up South Florida will
certainly help us in our effort to land another Super Bowl. As we speak, the Miami-Dade beautification projects are at full speed, from Homestead to Doral to Aventura. Just drive around town to see what I mean. Look at all the new trees planted along LeJeune Road near Miami International Airport. Or check out the new pink sidewalks in downtown Miami. Walk around our neighborhoods from Coral Gables to Coconut Grove and Little Havana and you'll understand why these types of beautification projects make our community shine and are so important to you and me. I want to thank everybody in our community for pulling together on this. From Miami-Dade County Commission Chairman Dennis Moss, and members of the County Commission, to Mayor Carlos Alvarez, Miami Gardens Mayor Shirley Gibson, the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, the Florida Department of Transportation, and all the City and County Leaders for making our home even more stunning. There's a reason why South Florida hosts so many huge events attracting people from around the world. Besides our brilliant weather and beautiful scenery, no community is as unique and diverse as ours. So while South Florida spruces up for these big events, we all benefit in the long term.

Hampton Inn hosts Betty Roffwarg, HR Matters "Get Ready, Get Set, Get Hired!" was the theme of Aventura Marketing Council's recent Business Development Committee Meeting at Hampton Inn Hallandale Beach Aventura located directly across the street from Gulfstream Park. HR Matters President Betty Roffwarg discussed tips on how to rev up your resume, sharpen your interviewing skills, uncover your resources and tap into recession-proof industries. "The most important thing is to think about yourself as a product you are trying to sell," says Roffwarg. "You want to take a solution based approach that clearly defines your value and think about the question "What can I do for the company rather than what can the company do for me." The first step is to define your own unique value, and determine how that will help the
company solve its problems. Knowing that change is inherent in business and life, think about how you have handled change personally and professionally and come up with examples of how you have successfully managed change. Once these items are tapped, it's time to work on the resume, in order to have a shot at the interview. Tips for revving up the resume include: Determine the appropriate format, either chronological or functional; scrap the objective line and replace with an executive summary; leave out tired language; list achievements; emphasize contribution to the bottom line; account for time gaps; check for spelling mistakes; use professional sounding email address; not necessary to use photos; do not lie or fabricate; and always direct resume and cover letter to the hiring manager.
"83% of recruiters dig for "digital dirt" by Googling and Face Booking prospective candidates," says Roffwarg. "Ensure your EImage is clean, Google yourself to make sure that nothing comes up and if something does, try to have it removed." Tips for the interview process include: Look and dress sharp; be on time; research the company; be prepared; firm hand shake / eye contact; listen, don't ramble; be prepared for situational questions; ask questions; and follow up. Roffwarg also suggests to communicate to the interviewer that you 'want' the job, not that you 'need' the job and to always keep your references up to date. According to Roffwarg, recession proof industries/positions that might be hiring include: Alternative energy; construction and infrastructure; education; healthcare; web
developers; programmer analysts; public relations specialists; law enforcement; insurance sales; pharmacy specialists; funeral directors; environmental scientists; and fast food workers. "Betty's presentation was extremely thorough and full of valuable information," said AMC Business Development Committee Chairman Peter L. Fishel, CPA. "With the economy in such turmoil and unemployment on a rise, we felt the subject was pertinent for interested AMC members and those they might be able to help." VIEWPOINT Thrift, not consumerism, is the answer BY ALICIA GRAVITZ My grandparents married during the Great Depression and began raising their young family during World War II. My grandmother would tell me stories about those times with pride. She couldn't buy a car or nylon stockings. But she did save every bit of aluminum for the war effort, mended socks, and planted a victory garden. Though they had very little, when they could save ten cents, she would get another stamp for her war bond book. As tough as those times were, my grandmother felt that what she did every day mattered for the country and her children's future. Families across the nation took these same actions, and, together, they did indeed make all the difference. The victory gardens, the recycling, the $185 billion in war bonds raised by 85 million cash-strapped Americans (nearly $2 trillion in today's dollars), and the retooling of Detroit for tanks and planes provided our country with the resources and capacity for the war effort. Taken together, these actions gave the economy a whole new set of prioritiesmoving from a failing consumer-based economy to an economy focused on providing for the country's future. As a nation, we are again at this kind of pivotal time. We can choose to reprioritize the economy. And we know how to do it -- we did it during World War II. The steps this time around will look familiar to those who experienced these days. We need to embrace thrift as a fundamental value, and collectively shift our economy from one depending on consumerism, debt, and speculation, to one that spends its precious resources on what sustains health and well-being for people and the planet. Like the economy my grandmother experienced during World War II, the consumer sector can no longer be the economy's driver. But instead of a war effort, the priority now needs be to on economic activity and jobs that bring about a sustainable future-from energy efficiency, mass transit, and sustainable agriculture to education, health, and building resilient communities, that make sure no one is left behind. The good news is that we're already doing it. When gas prices spiked last summer, we saw millions of Americans finding
ways to cut back on their driving. When Juneau, Alaska faced an avalanche-induced power outage last year, the town reduced its electricity use by 30 percent within weeks. And just this past spring, we saw the reports that the economic downturn can be seen at our nation's landfills, which have been taking in less trash, as more Americans shift to thrift. Smart transportation, energy efficiency, and a reduction of our landfill footprint: they're not only a smart reaction to a crisis, but they're part of the right response which, sustained into the future, will help us create the new economy that will work for all of us. Unlike after World War II, we can't go “back to the way it was” when our current crisis is over. We need to create the fundamental system change that keeps to these new priorities and reinvents a new economics that doesn't depend on unhealthy growth-a system its cost on others, producing a range of modern social ills, from sweatshop labor to pollution. Instead, we need to build a new system that provides well-being for all in a sustainable, steadystate economy. We need to make conspicuous consumption a thing of the past, and in this new economy, you and I, like my grandmother, will be growing that garden, mending, and recycling. We'll get more creative about cooperating with family, friends, and neighbors to take care of the basics - and have more fun. The money we save will go to priorities like making our homes more energy-efficient, and into investments that help our entire country shift to renewables and provide the preventive care to keep families in good health. No more defaulting back to consumerism as the engine that drives the economy and speculative investment that sends money speeding around the globe, divorced from the real, Main Street economy. We need to create the fundamental system change that embeds these new priorities - reinventing a new economics, with a new green engine, that provides wellbeing for all. -Alisa Gravitz is the executive director of Green America, the national organization advocating for a just and sustainable economy, www.greenamericatoday.org <http://www.greenamericatoday.org>

Unions are good for rural economies BY RICHARD A. LEVINS Congress is considering legislation called the Employee Free Choice Act. If passed, the Act would make it easier for people to join labor unions and bargain for higher wages and better benefits. This, in turn, would provide some much-needed stimulus for rural economies. It's no secret that rural economies are in tough shape. During the 1990's, a University of Minnesota study found shocking similarities between the state's rural economy and that of a developing country. The current economic tailspin has only made things worse. For as long as I can remember, rural residents have tried to entice businesses into their communities by offering them a cheaper workforce: “Bring your factory to our town. People will work for less here, and we'll throw in tax cuts for good measure.” But these efforts have done nothing to halt the economic decline of most of our rural communities. On the other hand, Paul Krugman, our most recent Nobel Prize winner in economics, wrote that “falling wages are a symptom of a sick economy.” He went even farther and said that falling wages “can make the economy even sicker”. (NY Times, May 4, 2009)Krugman argues that a healthy, middle class economy needs middle class wages. This is why labor unions are so important: More than any other force, they work to keep wages at levels that will support stability. And what does the Employee Free Choice Act do? It makes it easier for people to join unions-and that, not the smokescreen about secret ballots, is the real reason large corporations are fighting so des-
perately to defeat it. Let's think for a minute about how Krugman's support for an economy based on higher wages would benefit rural America. There are many studies showing how family-sized farms provide more benefits for rural regions than factories. Those factories depend on cheap labor-higher wages would level the playing field. And let's think about all of those people who work in rural processing plants and other businesses that support farming. Are the communities they work in better off with residents who are paid middle class wages, or with people struggling to make it on rock bottom wages? There will always be people who continue to sing the “we must be competitive” song as the rural economy sinks further into the mud. But we must ask this, too: “Be competitive in what?” Is there any point in trying to have the lowest wages in the world? I don't think so. What we should be competitive in is our standard of living. Attractive rural areas are built on quality of life, not cheap wages. With regard to the Employee Free Choice Act, the real issue comes down to this. Corporate opponents of the Act know that when workers do the same job for less, the rich get richer at everyone else's expense. Supporters of the Act know that healthy rural economies need middle class wages. Stronger labor unions will help get us there. -Richard A. Levins is Professor Emeritus of Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota. He has worked extensively in rural areas, sometimes in farm management, sometimes in community development.

MDC medical student wins Florida Campus Compact’s top award for community service Sonia Fajardo, a 2009 nursing graduate from Miami Dade College's (MDC) Medical Center Campus, has another reason to celebrate her scholarly accomplishments. From an outstanding pool of statewide nominees, she was recently named a recipient of the Florida Campus Compact's Excellence in Service Award for the community/state college sector. "This is definitely an honor and a nice completion to my nursing education," said Fajardo, who was nominated for the award by her mentor and MDC professor Marie Etienne. A highly competitive process, Florida Campus Compact evaluates the academic and community/public service efforts of college students throughout the state of Florida. To meet an academic requirement of 23 service-learning hours, Fajardo used an idea to help needy residents near the neighborhood coffee shop she visited regularly, and a chance conversation with a friendly customer to begin planning and organizing a health fair. Community service is a required component of all of the college's degree programs. Students must complete a minimum of 23 hours before graduation. "The Dunkin Donuts in North Beach was my
study hangout because it was the only place I could actually concentrate," said Fajardo. While there, the Jackson Hospital nursing scholar met Robert Fountain, a Calvary Chapel pastor and Miami Beach police chaplain, who offered to help with some of the outreach and marketing functions for the event. Fajardo said targeting the working class neighborhoods within North Beach where the health fair was held last November had more to do with the heart and wasn't a random opportunity to score community service points. "North Beach residents consist mainly of Hispanic children and families of low economic status, who do not have insurance and are limited in their resources and access to affordable healthcare," said Fajardo. Life in the City BY BARI AUERBACH ‘Bill of Rights’ Watching the fireworks is always a blast - but this year, 4th of July would be even more special if the City of Aventura drafted a modern-day Bill of Rights ensuring liberties like these: *Right to “bare arms”: Work those biceps and triceps! But if you can’t afford a gym membership or a personal trainer, you can get a lot of great exercise around the Aventura circle as long as you don’t mind the risk of being run over by baby strollers, bicycles or boot camp participants training to protect the city in case of suburban warfare. *Right to “be wrong”: Next time you’re at one of those four-way stop signs where no one knows who has the right of way, try to be patient and refrain from cursing at confused drivers. This level of tolerance could also apply to servers who accidentally bring you a bill of “wrongs” with nothing
right except for the gratuity that’s already been included. *Freedom of “speechless”: From dogs and their owners wearing matching outfits - to the biggest accomplishments of cosmetic surgeons squeezed into the skimpiest tops –just when you think you’ve seen it all, there’s always more speechless surprises….Like the lady on line at Publix stuffing as many grapes into her mouth as possible before the bag gets weighed – or the man who never buys cologne and just uses the tester bottles before big dates. *Freedom of assembly “poolside”: When it’s this hot outside, everyone should have the right to leave their jobs early to work on their tan. And since it’s bikini season, all women should especially have the right to try on a new suit in a dressing room without fluorescent lights! *Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness…Of course these basic rights are exponentially enjoyed by everyone lucky to be living in the City of Aventura – smart enough to declare independence from Miami-Dade County in 1995!

Bank of Florida's Aurelia Moruzzi brings personal touch to Aventura bank LYNN CARROLL
PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE LC: As vice president and financial center manager for Bank of Florida - Southeast's Aventura office, have you seen changes in people's perceptions of banks due to the downturn in the U.S. economy? AM: We have seen a big increase in people who have traditionally banked at large institutions now inquiring about what a community bank like ours has to offer, with many considering community banks for the first time. They like the fact that we have the same scope of products and services as the large banks. At the same time, we offer a high level of personal service and a very deep knowledge of the local market. LC: What kinds of services do you provide? AM: Our clients are largely business owners and professionals such as doctors, lawyers and accountants, and we work with them to establish a complete banking relationship to help them achieve their financial goals. We
Aventura Finest Hand Car Wash the exception to the rule BY LYNN CARROLL Find out firsthand what it's like to get your car spiffed up by professionals at Aventura Finest Hand Car Wash. "We're the exception to the rule when it comes to washing vehicles," says owner Guillermo Freile. That's the secret of the success enjoyed by Aventura Finest Hand Car Wash, now at two convenient locations in the Harbour Center parking garage behind Loehmann's Fashion Island, 18851 NE 29th Avenue, and at the Aventura Mall in Macy's garage, 19501 Biscayne Blvd. A third location is on the drawing board. "We provide only the very best service to our customers," says Freile, who started in business in South Florida more than 12 years ago. "We haven't changed service levels, and our prices are the same as they've been for seven years, even though we've had a sharp increase in the cost of materials." Major upgrades and renovations have just been completed at the Aventura Mall location. "We've made a big investment there," Freile says. "We've enhanced it with a central vacuum system and state-of-theart equipment. He says he uses green, biodegradable products whenever possible. "I'm always looking for the best products on the market so our clients get the latest and the best care
for their vehicles. "Ours is a very personalized business," Freile says. "We treat each car as if it were our own, always reaching out to be more professional and efficient." Standard services with each wash include wiping around door edges, extensive vacuuming that includes the trunk, dashboard wiping, and silicone and Armoral for the tires. "Thoroughness is our specialty," says Freile. Customers can choose from a detail wash, Lexol, bug removal, or a wash with blue coral wax, clay wax, shampoo or a full detail shampoo with wax that covers from A to Z. As an added feature, Aventura Finest Hand Car Wash will pick up your car. Just call 305- 936-9929 (Harbour Center location) or 305-792-4451 (Aventura Mall location) or email ffinest4@aol.com. A wonderful gentlemen from a local bank was shopping at the store, and in the course of our conversation, he encouraged me to go into banking and invited me to interview with his bank. I did, and I have enjoyed being a banker ever since then, with 27 years in banking in Aventura and North Miami Beach.
LC: What advantage is there to banking with an institution that is locally focused?
LC: Are you and Bank of Florida Southeast involved in community activities?
AM: Because we understand the local marketplace, we are able to handle underwriting for loans locally, which makes the process very straightforward and timely. In one visit, we can discuss the loan criteria, and clients leave with a firm grasp of our loan requirements and what steps, if any, need to be taken to meet loan requirements.
AM: Yes, Bank of Florida - Southeast is very active in local fundraising for the March of Dimes, Relay for Life, A Child is Missing and Big Brothers Big Sisters. ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER
Even wigs can be boring Q: I’ve been in the same monogamous relationship for seven years, and sex has become sort of predictable – dare I say dull? Recently, on a lark, I bought a brunet wig (I’m a blonde), which I wore while we had sex. Needless to say, the sex was fabulous. The only problem is, now my partner always wants me to wear the wig, I find this a little creepy. What should I do? A: Let’s say a friend gave you a fabulous recipe, and you both enjoyed the meal a great deal. Would that mean you’d enjoy the meal as much if you had it every night for the rest of the week? My guess would be that you’d get tired of it after a while, no matter how great it was. But if you made it once a month, then each time you ate if you’d have almost as much enjoyment as you did the first time. Let your partner read this answer, and I think he’ll see that the wig should be a part of your sexual repertoire, but only once in a while. And now that you’ve both discovered the joys that a little variety can bring, you can try wearing a red wig and even a green
one, or some sexy outfits – and so could he? Q: My wife and I have known each other for more than 15 years, and we’ve been married for eight. Until our first child was born six years ago, she had always experienced intense orgasms while we made love. Since then she has been frustrated by experiencing the onset of an intense orgasm, only to be disappointed when the orgasm is brief and mild. Both of our children were born by Caesarean section, so there has no physiological trauma to the immediate area of the sexual organs. She has been a trouper through it all, but I’m afraid that the continual frustration of not being able to reach the intensity that she once was accustomed to will eventually wear down her desire for sex. We have no idea where to turn. Is this a common problem, and what can we do to change the situation? A: I presume you’re writing to me because I am a sex therapist. I can answer some questions in a column such as this, but others require more in depth analysis, and you case falls into this category. Now, the first thing I would do if you came to my office would be to send your wife to a gynecologist to make sure that she is physically sound, that’s something you can do on your own. If her gynecologist gives the all-clear, then you should seek out a sex therapist in your area. Sex is important, and your wife shouldn’t have to suffer needlessly if a cure can be found.

Here’s looking at you!! BY REV. WILL KEYSER
Ly Espinol
There are many ways someone may look at you: suspiciously, accusingly, questionably, sternly and approvingly, to name a few. It may also be a look of disapproval. In my experience as a father of two children there were times when a “look” was necessary. I served as Organist in a church and my wife supervised the Nursery Department. On one occasion our children were sitting together on the front row and I was at the organ, my wife in the nursery. At some point they began to do what a 5 year old and a 3 year old would do, behave in a fashion not acceptable. All it took was my “look of disapproval” to correct their behavior. A very familiar event recorded in the Scriptures reveals the many facets of a single look. When Jesus was on trial before Caiaphas, The High Priest, Peter, one of the most forward of the Disciples, became intimidated to the point of denial. A servant girl, one of the officials and a relative of the soldier whose ear Peter had cut off earlier, questioned his association with Jesus. Peter very strongly denied he even knew ‘the man’. The man he denied
simply turned and “looked” at Peter. It was a multifaceted look; a convicting look as if to say, “Don’t you know me, Peter? Look me in the face and tell me so!” It was a chiding look, perhaps even a frown of displeasure; a criticizing, scolding look; “You are dis-owning me when you should be defending me.” a compassionate look, filled with tenderness as if to say, “Poor Peter, how weak is your faith? How much farther will you fall away if I don’t help you?” It was also a compelling look, guiding Peter with his eye in almost a wink, to go out from his sorry surroundings, re-think his situation and then proceed to do what he must; a conveying look causing grace to pass to Peter enabling him to repent, have a change of heart and bring him back into a right relationship. Then Peter remembered the words he had heard earlier; “Before the rooster crows you will deny me three times.” At the sound of the rooster Peter went out and wept bitterly. Just one look from the one Peter followed so closely was enough to bring him godly sorrow and repentance for his disloyalty. Which one of God’s “looks” applies to you today?? Here’s Looking At You!! Mini Cooper is fun to drive, sporty and practical Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Want a small car that’s sporty and practical, fun to drive and gets excellent fuel economy (28/37 mpg)? Check out the latest version of the Mini Cooper, now available as a convertible. The latest hardtop edition of the Mini Cooper made its debut in the 2007 model year, although earlier generations have been around since 2000 (the original Mini debuted in the late 1950s). The two versions are similar, but there are subtle differences. For example, the headlights of the latest models are rounder and the hood is flatter, while the grille is more prominent and the turn signals have been integrated into the headlight clusters. To the rear, the taillights are wider and there’s a wider trim strip on the hatch. For 2009, the Mini Cooper is offered as a two-door hatchback hardtop, a four-
seat convertible and something with a longer wheelbase that resembles a small station wagon dubbed the Clubman. The hardtop was redesigned for the 2007 model year, while the convertible debuts as a 2009 model. Two trim levels are available, the standard Cooper and the highperformance Cooper S. Fog lights, a black grille insert, hood scoop, rear bumper inserts and rear spoiler wing distinguish the Cooper S from the Cooper. Both standard models are powered by a normally aspirated 1.6-liter, 118 hp four-cylinder engine, while the Mini Cooper S models come with a turbocharged 172-hp version of the same engine and clock 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. An oversize round speedometer sits in the center of the dash and dominates the interior. A tachometer is mounted on the tilt/telescoping steering column and it moves when the column is adjusted. Standard models come with leatherette upholstery, a six-way adjustable driver’s seat, heightadjustable front passenger seat, splitfolding rear seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, air conditioning, power windows, power locks, AM/FM/CD/MP3

Working Paranoia BY PATRICIA FRANK PSY.D., LMHC
There are many personalities at work that make the workplace uncomfortable for others. Their personalities can create added stress for everyone. It is important to understand them and to know how to cope with them. You might think that they are just a little peculiar but they actually have a personality disorder. People with Paranoid Personality Disorder are particularly upsetting and disturbing. They generally make others feel uneasy. They are suspicious of everyone’s motives and intentions. They have an abnormal tendency to mistrust and suspect others. They think that they are the center of the universe. Every gesture and event they believe is directly related to them. If a paranoid person passes the coffee room and his co-workers are talking and laughing he will immediately think that they are talking about him and laughing at him. If he sees a coworker talking to someone he assumes they are talking about him. Even strangers who pass him on the street laughing about something will make him think that they are making fun of him. He believes that his co-workers are plotting against him and making disparaging remarks about him. He feels that the boss has it
in for him as well. Paranoids see the world as a dangerous place. They think that their perceptions are true even when they are not valid. Their thoughts are delusional and have no basis in reality. Having a relationship with them is difficult. You cannot feel understood or secure. You often feel ill at ease. There is an underlying current of uncertainty. Your most innocuous remarks and activities are always under scrutiny and subject to misinterpretation. It is disquieting to know that someone suspects your intentions. And doubts you character. The paranoid person can be confrontational and may actually ask you if you are plotting to get them fired. They may challenge you and imply that you are thinking, doing or saying things against them. It is discouraging to know someone thinks of you in that manner. It is futile to defend yourself or to try to convince them of their erroneous thinking. They will only scoff at your explanations. They will not believe you. Sometimes, they will not forgive you. You might also try to take extra steps to explain and clarify your actions before they occur. For instance, you could go to the person and tell them that you are going to be talking about a work project with a co-worker.

‘Fitting in Fitness’ BY BARI AUERBACH It’s hard to get motivated to workout when you’re tired after a long day at work or exhausted from a crazy day with the kids. Bur for those open to learning some quicker ways to exercise, it is possible to “fit in fitness” and actually feel more energetic than ever before… Pick a Part…For men and women, the smart “body part” training method is perfect if you’re pressed for time plus it can give you that firm muscle tone you can’t get from cardio alone – and allows for optimal muscle recovery time. For example, you can divide workouts as follows: Monday: Quads/Glutes; Tuesday: Back; Wednesday: Shoulders/Chest; Thursday: Hamstrings/Calves; Friday: Arms (Bi’s & Tri’s). If you choose three to four exercises for each body part and complete three to four sets of 15 reps, each training session should take no more than 30-40 minutes. Then if you have a little more time, to maximize fat burning, fit in 20-30 minutes of cardio on a bike, elliptical machine or treadmill. Plan a Circuit…As opposed to a marathon training session, try setting up a “short circuit” training routine you can do at home or in the gym that will get your heart rate up while building strength and endurance. For example, arrange stations where you can jump rope or jog in place, do sets of pushups and sit ups, stationary or walking lunges – and if you’d really like to have arms with less wiggle and jiggle, just pull up a chair and do dips off the edge of the seat. You can complete the circuit three or four times in 30 minutes or less – about the same amount of time it would take sleep an extra half hour or sit on the sofa watching
The Biggest Loser. Find a Class…Oftentimes the best way to ensure you’ll make time for and keep up with some form of exercise is to pick a class or sport you really enjoy. Most gyms offer a variety of classes that are included with membership such as Pilates, yoga, Latin dance, body sculpting, kickboxing, spinning and more. It’s also never too late to spark or reignite an interest in tennis, rollerblading, swimming, ballet, ballroom dancing or any other activity that makes fitness fun. Walk it Off…Take the stairs instead of the elevator; park further away - and instead of having that after dinner drink, try taking an after dinner walk. Incorporating a little more movement into your lifestyle whenever possible can add up to a lot more calories burned over time. When it comes to “fitting in fitness,” there are a myriad of ways everyone can find time to promote health and longevity…But if nothing else seems to be working, try the “guilt trip” method: This strategy involves joining a gym you have to pass by on trips to work or frequent destinations like the supermarket or ice cream shop!

Is Florida’s economic recovery still another two years away?
Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY Could the end of the recession be in sight? Residential construction nationwide unexpectedly climbed 17.2 percent last month, its highest level since last fall. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, new multifamily housing is up 62 percent, and singlefamily homes are up 7.5 percent. Here in Florida however, the still-stalled housing markets are now being blamed for possibly delaying recovery for another two years. Florida went into a recession about six months before everyone else, which is why our recovery may take even longer according to the latest economic forecast from banking giant Wachovia. Researchers found Miami-Dade recently lost about 41,000 jobs, although foreign trade and commerce remain strong points for the local economy. Construction and housing continue to be Miami’s long-term problems. The Wachovia
Forecast concludes, “A considerable period of time will be needed to bring Miami’s housing market back into balance,” a Coral Gables financial planner told me. “It certainly looks like housing is pulling down so many other areas, like employment and consumer spending; it all has to be worked out.” The study finds Fort Lauderdale’s job losses to be a little better, but the city still has some major weaknesses after recently losing about 35,000 positions. While Broward’s recovery is still “a ways off,” it finds the worst of the recession to likely have passed. Wachovia economists say statewide unemployment will worsen 11 percent due to our housing and real estate markets that are still being described as considerably worse than the rest of country. For this reason, Wachovia now believes we may not see a turnaround until much later than the rest of the country — possibly as late as 2011. Remember, however, that economic forecast predictions are similar to those of severe storm paths. Sometimes forecasters get them right, and sometimes they don’t. Watch Al Sunshine’s “4 Your Money” reports Monday-Friday beginning at noon. You may find Al’s blog at <cbs4.com/4yourmoney>.
