Bar Rosso hosts 'rave review' grand opening networker BY BARI AUERBACH
Where can you go any day to meet friends, enjoy a glass of wine, amazing Italian food and just relax? The new Bar Rosso in Aventura…that cool-looking place with the bright red awning near the Publix at Loehmann's already receiving rave reviews! It may have been pouring outside - but with more than 100 kinds of wine by the pour, the bottle or flights, even inclement weather didn't stop more than a hundred Aventura Marketing Council members from "pouring" in for Bar Rosso's best "barnone" grand opening networking event. Bar Rosso co-owners Ken Klein and Jeffrey Perlow welcomed friends, family, business and community leaders to the restaurant and Vinoteca serving Italianstyle cuisine with a modern twist, designed with "wine in mind." Word of mouth is already traveling fast…"Bar Rosso is my new fave spot! We were planning to just sample some of the wines and appetizers, but everything was so good we ended up staying for dinner… Our server was extremely helpful when it came to navigating the wine list--good thing, because there are more than 100 to choose from." During the AMC networking event, everyone agreed Klein's experience as a successful restaurateur combined with the unique Aventura insight Perlow possesses as the city's former Mayor and long-time resident is creating the perfect recipe for Bar Rosso's success. Their vision has created "a relaxed and friendly environment" perfect for enjoying a glass or bottle of wine and exceptionally-priced, great meals for lunch, dinner - or just a light bite. "I'm a pasta and seafood lover so I had the Fettuccini Nero which had an incredible mix of pasta, shrimp, clams and spicy sausage… I couldn't resist trying my date's whole wheat pappardelle with mushrooms
and plum tomatoes…I had the yellowtail snapper and it was absolutely to die for... We tried four tasting plates (get the meatball sliders and crispy artichokes)." AMC members also complimented Bar Rosso's Italian wines from various regions and producers featuring a mix of reds and whites including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Brunello, Barbera, Dolcetto, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gamay, Muscat and Trebbiano. "Bar Rosso has the best of both worlds--the menu is truly authentic Italian, and the venue itself is super charming…welcoming, fun, warm… I'd go for Happy Hour and then later dinner." Quickly becoming "Aventura's newest neighborhood hotspot," Bar Rosso's warm, inviting décor features a large bar displaying fine wines, an exhibition kitchen, a lav- Al Blummer, Laurie Wax and Jeff Perlow, Bar Rosso; Elaine Adler, Aventura Marketing Council; Irwin Wax, Jennifer ish mozzarella bar, cozy Hazan and Ken Klein, Bar Rosso; Shari Lynn Rothstein-Kramer, SLK Creative tables plus large tables for parties of up to 20, and "The Park" - Bar Rosso's special al fresco dining area that can be reserved for special occasions or corporate events. I.D.E.A. hosts AMC Technology Committee Meeting Aventura Marketing Council's Technology Committee members recently gathered at the state-of-the-art executive offices of Canadian based I.D.E.A. International Design Engineering and Architecture located in One Aventura Executive Center. "Hurricane Season 2009: Do You Have a Computer Recovery Plan?" was the meeting topic, as Technology Committee chair Eric Beck, founding principal of IT Doctors, reviewed the challenges and solutions. The topic ranged from prevention of data loss by ensuring a good computer back-up system is in place and testing it to ensure it operates as it should to wireless devices that ensure you never lose internet access in the event of a major storm; and along the way they discussed T1 DSL wireless cards, Voice Over IP, POP accounts and so much more! The AMC's Technology Committee brings together Aventura's leading
technology gurus giving them a forum to exchange ideas and maintain open lines of communication," said Beck. "Starting with one main focus, the conversational setting is open for all participants to contribute and for the non-technos to ask questions and become more educated on the subject. Non-technical business owners are strongly encouraged to attend and bring with them those challenging questions and concerns that find them daily." VIEWPOINT Let’s stoke up the furor of executive pay
Who says America doesn’t need unions?
BY CHUCK COLLINS AND SAM PIZZIGATI
BY JIM HIGHTOWER
Last February, amid public anger over millions of dollars in bonuses at bailed-out insurance giant AIG, our top national political leaders rushed to express their outrage - and even took some steps to place a lid on overthe-top executive pay. That lid has now come off. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, with his just-released rules and proposals on executive pay, has essentially turned the specific executive pay limits that President Barack Obama announced and Congress legislated this past winter into mushy prescriptions that pose no real threat to the windfalls to which CEOs have become so thoroughly accustomed. Remember that $500,000 "cap" on executive compensation that the White House announced back in February? That maximum has now become a minimum. Under the new Treasury rules, a federal pay czar will "automatically approve" any paycheck from a troubled enterprise like AIG that doesn't top half a million - and even will allow with that paycheck "additional compensation paid in the form of long-term restricted stock." None of this backpedaling on executive pay reform should surprise us. Ever since the early 1980s, the years when pay for power suits first started pirouetting up, up and away, the pattern has become depressingly familiar. A CEO walks off with a windfall. A Wall Street highflyer hits an unimaginably massive jackpot. Editorial writers tut-tut. News magazines run cover stories about corporate greed. Lawmakers hold hearings and earnestly insist on "pay for performance." And nothing changes. The outrages just keep getting more outrageous. Two decades ago a commentator labeled Warner Communications CEO Steve Ross the "prince of pay." Mr. Ross was averaging, in the 1980s, all of $16 million a year. In 1993, Walt Disney CEO Michael Eisner took home $203 million. An outraged Business Week called that sum the most any CEO "has made in a single year - or probably in an entire career in the history of American business." Four years later, Mr. Eisner took home even more. He cashed out a stash of stock options and cleared $565 million, the "biggest payday for an executive in history," The Washington Post exclaimed. These days, that $565 million payday almost seems ordinary. In 2007, the financial world's top 50 hedge fund managers averaged $581 million each.
We need to end, and soon, this endless escalation of what our power suits get to stuff in their pockets. We simply can't afford to continue down the economic road we've been traveling. Outrageously huge rewards, the economic meltdown of the past year has made perfectly plain, have no redeeming social value. They serve only to create incentives for outrageous behavior. We need to start discouraging that behavior - and we can. The best place to start: the federal tax code. Right now, our tax code actually encourages excessive pay. The more companies shell out in executive bonuses and stock awards, for instance, the more they can deduct off their taxes. Consider, for instance, Lockheed Martin, a company that feeds almost exclusively off government contracts. Lockheed recently announced that its CEO took home $26.5 million in 2008. Under current law, almost all of that $26.5 million qualifies as a tax deduction for the company. One member of Congress, Rep. Barbara Lee from California, is moving to end taxpayer subsidies for excessive executive pay. Ms. Lee has introduced legislation, the Income Equity Act, which denies corporations tax deductions on any executive compensation that runs over $500,000 or 25 times the pay of a company's lowest-wage worker. Enacting this legislation, says Ms. Lee, "would discourage skyrocketing pay at the top and encourage companies to raise the pay of workers at the bottom." That pay at the bottom desperately needs raising. Average Americans today, after adjusting for inflation, are making less in weekly wages than they made back in the 1970s. And that's no accident. For three decades now, America's corporate aristocrats have "performed" - and pocketed personal fortunes - by attacking the well-being of average Americans. Over those years, they've downsized workers and outsourced jobs. They've gutted pensions and benefits. They've hollowed out our middle class. We need to start heading in a different direction. And quick. Chuck Collins is a senior scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies in its Boston office, where he directs the Program on Inequality and the Common Good. Sam Pizzigati, an Institute associate fellow, edits "Too Much," an online weekly on excess and inequality. They are co-authors of "Executive Excess," a yearly report on CEO pay.
The National Transportation Safety Board has now issued its official review of "The Miracle On The Hudson" - the US Airways flight from New York City that struck a flock of geese, lost all power, and was forced to land in the Hudson River last January. NTSB's analysis confirms what we learned from news reports at the time Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and the rest of the crew on Flight 1549 performed marvelously in the face of looming disaster, saving the lives of 150 horrified passengers by landing the jet intact and quickly evacuating it. Their performance has been hailed with such phrases as "stoic," "nearly flawless," and "heroic." But another laudatory term should be applied to them as well: "union." Practically everyone involved in averting this disaster was a union-trained professional. Captain Sully himself is not only a member of the Airline Pilots Association, but also served on its national governing committee and is APA's former safety chairman. Indeed, he and his union have
had to fight airline chieftains who've tried to cut back on the safety training programs that allowed him to save those lives. Likewise, the cool-headed flight attendants who so expeditiously moved those nearly-panicked people off the plane, are members of their union, the Association of Flight Attendants, which also stresses safety. The ferry crews that zipped into action, skillfully and quickly maneuvering their boats right up to the wings to rescue passengers - they're in the Seafarers International Union, which gives them the safety courses that enabled them to respond as they did. The cops, firefighters, and air traffic controllers also performed marvelously - all union trained. At a time when corporate interests in all sectors of our economy are trying to eliminate unions, remember Flight 1549 the union-made miracle on the Hudson. -For more information on Jim Hightower's work - and to subscribe to his award-winning monthly newsletter, The Hightower Lowdown, visit www.jimhightower.com <http://www.jimhightower.com>

Biscayne Institutes holds ceremony for graduate of Biscayne Academy BY LYNN CARROLL The Biscayne Institutes held a graduation ceremony for Keith Hanies, who attended the Biscayne Academy for five years. "Keith came a long way in the program," said Dr. Marie A. DiCowden, a nationally known healthcare psychologist and founder and program Keith Hanies director for the Biscayne Institutes, which oversees the Biscayne Academy, a fully accredited school for children living with disabilities. Dr. DiCowden said Keith attended Biscayne Institutes on a John McKay Scholarship. "He made great strides," she said. "He overcame numerous obstacles with the help of unconditional love from his family, and by working with caring teachers and therapists in an individualized curriculum. As the father of a young boy himself, Keith balanced continued learning and growth with parenting." Dr. DiCowden said Keith's graduation was celebrated with family and
friends from the Biscayne community with a special slide show about his career at the Academy, as well as speeches from staff and peers honoring Keith's progress. "Keith," she said, "provides a great model for other young men and women striving to rise above daily problems in life and learning to prepare for a productive future." Biscayne's programs, Dr. DiCowden said, are available for children from 5-21 years of age in need of assistance in the community who meet qualifying criteria. Biscayne Academy participates in the Florida Scholarship Opportunity program, and accepts John McKay scholarships for children with varying exceptionalities and disabilities. Admissions are on a quarterly basis and require an interview. For more information on enrollment in the program call Karen Rutman, MSW, HealthCare Community Liaison. Christine Lee's at Gulfstream Park hosts Krop Senior High P.T.S.A. Fundraising Gala BY JEREIMA FERRER Hundreds of guests packed into Christine Lee's at Gulfstream Park for the 2nd Annual Lightning Wine-Tasting and Silent Auction Gala benefiting students at Dr. Michael M. Krop Sr. High. The event was organized by the high school's Parent Teacher Student Association to help raise funds for student scholarships. The silent auction gala helped the PTSA raise $30,000 in scholarship money, thanks to the help of the nearly 300 guests who bid on everything from jewelry to art and exotic travel excursions. "It's a great opportunity for community members to come together not only to recognize but support public education, specifically Krop Sr. High," said Principal Mathew J. Welker. The auction's success will financially assist students and teachers at the school. Student scholarships will help fund college expenses but also help those students who are unable to pay for prom or graduation. The fundraiser also allows the PTSA to provide teachers with grants. "The money is divided between students and teachers," said event chairperson Ruth Vernick. Businesses in the Aventura area also
lend a hand to the fundraiser by donating items included in the silent auction. Southern Wine and Spirits donated the evening's wine for the wine tasting and Christine Lee's opened its doors free of charge and also contributed the food. The entertainment was provided by the high school's orchestra and Ari Odzer, reporter for WTVJ Channel 6, was the event's emcee. "People clear their calendar for this event, it just keeps growing," said PTSA Vice President Esther Reynolds. The night's top bids included: A 7night stay in Cap Juluca, Anguilla; 3night stay Bimini Bay Resort, Bahamas; 2night stay Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Miami; 5-day Carnival Cruise; and a Bichon Frise Puppy. The event's success could not have been achieved without the dedicated efforts of the PTSA. "They know the value of good public education and the shortfall of the economy," said Miami-Dade Comm. Sally Heyman. Despite the economic crisis the PTSA reached its goal and raised more money than last year's silent auction. Historically Yours BY BOB DIAMOND Van Buren, Torture and the Jews of Damascus In 1840 in Damascus, Syria, a Franciscan Friar mysteriously disappeared with his servant. They were last seen in the Jewish quarter. Several Monks spread a rumor of the infamous discredited “blood libel,” which meant Jews allegedly using the blood of non-Jewish children as part of the Passover ritual. Although the Jewish Quarter was searched and nothing found, a Jewish barber was tortured until he confessed to the crime. A group of the city’s most notable Jews were also imprisoned, tortured, confessed and sentenced to death. Massive pressure was put on Pasha Muhammed Ali, the Ottoman Overlord of Syria, to execute the “murderers.” Jews throughout the world protested the false charges and denied that Jews ever committed any crime as part of their religious rituals. Despite the fact that American Jews were a small minority (about 15,000 Jews out of a national population of over 17 million people), Rabbis, led by Isaac Leeser of Philadelphia and communal leaders from
major cities throughout America, petitioned President Martin Van Buren to intervene on behalf of the Jews of Damascus. Van Buren heard their voices and ordered his Secretary of State, John Forsythe, to inform the Ottoman government of the “horror” felt by all Americans at the barbarous methods that were resorted to in order to compel confessions of imputed guilt, as well as the false charges “strikingly similar to those which in less enlightened ages, were made pretexts for the persecution of these unfortunate people…among whose kindred are found some of the most worthy and patriotic of (American) citizens.” Bowing to pressure from Van Buren, as well as from British representative Sir Moses Montefiore and two prominent French Jews, Pasha Ali ordered an end to the torture and confinement of the Jewish prisoners with their unconditional release and complete exoneration of the alleged crime. He instructed the officials in Damascus to “protect the city’s Jewish community” and also directed that the alleged religious ritual (blood libel) had “not the least foundation in truth,” and “the Jews shall have the same privileges as his other subjects, especially the free exercise of their religion.”

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER
35 Years of Waiting Q: Is it right for a woman to refuse to perform oral sex on her husband when he performs it on her? For more than 35 years I have performed oral sex on my wife as part of foreplay, but she refuses to do the same for me. She tells me how great it makes her feel, and I would like to feel that great too. She says she has never done it, but I never did it before her either. I read about it, tried it, and it worked. I have to say one thing for her, if we don’t have sex but I am aroused, she does masturbate me, but I would really like her to perform oral sex on me just once. If I am wrong, please let me know. A: You’re not wrong in wanting to be given oral sex, but you’re also not right in insisting. No one forced you to give your wife oral sex, and I’m sure that you actually enjoy it, so while it is true that you are giving her pleasure, you’re getting some pleasure in return. Now, she might well be missing out on the pleasure that giving you oral sex would provide, but it’s her right to refuse. But what if she gave you oral sex while you were wearing a condom? Maybe she’d find that more acceptable. So while I don’t think it would
be all right if you suggested this alternative once or twice. Let me know what happens. Q: I’m a 32-year-old woman who is crazily in love with a 31-year old very famous celebrity. It’s been five or six years now that I have been admiring him and loving him. I haven’t been fortunate in my life in meeting men. I’m really crazy about this one man and feel I could make a more loyal partner than his previous or present wife with whom I have read he does not have a good relationship. Dr. Ruth, how do I get through to such a famous person who is not easily rung up on the telephone? How do I convince him of my sincerity? A: I have no idea whether or not this man gets along well with his wife, and I certainly wouldn’t believe any article I read in the papers as to what goes on in the private lives of celebrities, but I can give you one guarantee. If you keep up this one sided love affair, you are going to end up being very miserable. If you read this column regularly, you know that I sometimes recommend fantasizing about celebrities as a way of distracting yourself from everyday problems. One reason I do this is because such fantasies don’t pose a threat to a relationship – because they can’t come true! The odds of your fantasies about this man becoming real are so small as to be nonexistent, and since you don’t have a relationship, the only sure result of these fantasies is that they are holding you back from developing one. It’s time you say good-bye to this man for treating you miserably (after all, he never calls, does he?) and start looking around for someone who is obtainable.

Never Pay Another Expensive Repair Again
Design by Design BY SCOTT KIMBALL AND JERI ROSENTHAL KIMBALL Give Your Bathroom a Pick Me Up Many of us find that making occasional changes to our home makes us feel good. It seems that once we have lived in a place for a while we feel the need to make some changes and a nice little pick-me-up project seems to do the trick. Here are some quick and easy changes you can make that won’t break the bank. Some real simple and inexpensive changes that can be made are, replacing the floor mat, shower curtain, towel bar, toilet paper holder and even getting new towels. If you don’t want to change the entire color scheme of the bathroom that’s ok, you can still create a new look just by changing or adding color with new accessories such as a waste basket, soap dispenser and tissue holder. Replacing the hardware of the vanity is another easy change to make. Try something bold and different, you may be surprised how much you like it. Large frameless mirrors were once very popular in bathrooms. If you have such a mirror, you can create a new look by

framing it. You can find a molding you like at a home improvement or arts and crafts store. Paint it to complement your bathroom décor and when you’ve finished the frame, attach it to the mirror with liquid glue. Or for less time and just a little more money you can remove the existing mirror and find a mirror already framed to your liking. Painting a room is a great way to give it a fresh new look. Paint doesn’t have to match the existing tiles or flooring - complimentary colors work well too. Be creative and use yellow paint with blue tiles. Bright colors work well in bathrooms because they can make a small space look larger. Replace your light fixtures if they are outdated, especially those around the mirror. Be sure to turn off the electricity before doing this project. You will want to place the new light fixture in the same location if you want to avoid having electrical or wall repair work done to move the outlet. There is no telling why a simple little change around the house seems to make us feel good but it does. And who doesn’t like to feel good? I know I do! mra (michael rosenthal associates) phone: 305.592.0040, fax: 305.592.5144, e-mail: info@mradsgn.net, website: www.mradsgn.com

My dry eyes keep tearing! BY DR. STEVEN WIGDOR Do your eyes feel sandy or gritty? Do they sometimes tear excessively? Have you ever been told that you have a condition called “dry eyes”. Doc, my eyes water, they’re not dry. The fact of the matter is that if the tear film on your eye is either lacking in its quality or quantity, you are considered to have “dry eye syndrome”. Here’s why. The tear film actually consists of three layers. The cornea, or clear window on the front of the eye is like a waxed car. Water would bead up on the cornea if not for the first layer of the tears, the mucus layer. A thin layer of mucus makes the surface “wet-able”. This allows the second layer of the tears, the water layer, to evenly coat the corneal surface. The third and outer most layer is the oil layer. It helps keep the water layer from evaporating while maintaining a smooth surface for light to properly enter the eye. The most common culprit in dry eye syndrome is the mucus layer. If the mucus layer breaks down, there will be areas on the cornea that the water layer will not be able to wet. Corneal dry spots form which result in the sandy gritty sensation that is often felt. Sometimes the brain tries to help by making the eye reflexly tear, almost like when we cry. This is why our eyes can feel wet or watery from a dry eye condition. Without a good mucus layer, tearing will only be a nuisance, and will not provide any improvement to comfort.
Treatment usually consists of re-wetting drops that mimic the mucus layer. Preservatives in drops can hinder the effectiveness so many physicians prefer nonpreserved artificial tears. Many formulas on the market today are now biochemically engineered so that the preservative dissipates, and the viscosity adjusts as soon as the drop mixes with your own tears. Unfortunately most tear substitutes provide only a short duration of relief and have to be reapplied often. Some evidence suggests that “dry eye syndrome” is caused by an autoimmune condition, where your body breaks down your own tear film. Restasis was developed, and has offered relief in some people, by inhibiting your eyes autoimmune mechanism. Another alternative to combat dry eyes is with the use of lacrimal plugs. These silicon “implants” close the openings that allow the tears to drain from the eyes. When a lack of tear quantity is the cause of dryness, this method keeps the tears you do have on your eye longer. Unless a dry eye condition is severe, it tends to be more of a nuisance than a health risk. The extent of the treatment received is usually based on the severity of symptoms. Visit your eye care physician to help determine the best treatment plan for you. Remember, everyone has hindsight protect your eyesight! Uncovery a Hidden Asset BY JON KIDD AND KEITH OWEN Imagine you were informed that, thanks to a close relative, you had inherited millions of dollars worth of Coca Cola stock certificates that had been lost in the attic for decades. Since this “negotiable instrument” belongs to you, would you climb up into the attic to get it and immediately enquire as to its value? Forgotten or unrealized assets are surprisingly more common than people think. Many families have not liquidated their bonds or stock certificates due to a lack of communication from generation to generation. Life insurance premium financing creates a very similar scenario by tapping into an unrealized asset we call “insurable net worth”. A life insurance policy is an asset just like a house or car. You may qualify for a loan that pays the annual premiums, just like a mortgage or car loan, except the interest and payments may be accrued into the loan. Interestingly, the policy value itself typically repays the loan for those of age 70 and over. 5 Common Questions
1. What if I already have an estate plan in place? Life insurance can supplement any existing estate plan. Most people are unaware of how life insurance premium financing benefits estate or charitable planning. It is recommended that individuals consult with their tax attorneys; gift taxes might be avoided with premium financing versus paying premiums outright. 2. What if I already have life insurance? Very rarely is an individual insured up to their net worth or full capacity. Many people do not realize the need for that much insurance. If the hidden asset (one’s insurability) exists, why not benefit from it? Further, many consumers are unaware that they have the option of exploring a sale of this policy in their lifetime to enjoy a “living benefit”. It is important to note that most insurance carriers do not condone originating new life insurance policies for the sole purpose of selling it for a financial gain as an investment. Another common purpose of life insurance premium financing is for a corporate key person or to fund a “buy-sell agreement”. Today, people often consider a 1035 exchange and/or to sell a policy to ultimately enjoy lower premiums due to the new mortality tables; the 2008 Valuation Basic

Tables (VBT) adjustment has resulted in lower premiums due to longer life expectancies. 3. I have heard of premium financing before, how do I choose the most specialized firm? Individuals should feel comfortable dealing with a specialized firm that focuses solely on premium financing; seek a practice that works with top CPAs, estate and tax attorneys among agents and advisors throughout the country referring clients to them. Premium loans should always be fully disclosed, transparent, safe and compliant and therefore be accepted by regulators, insurance companies and all other parties involved. A specialized firm will ensure that an individual is in a life insurance transaction that matches their needs. Choosing an experienced firm is important because insurance companies and regulators frown upon certain transactions that take place within the industry. 4. What if you have bad health? You may be pleasantly surprised that you are likely to be insurable provided you do not have a terminal illness. An insured could be classified as a standard health risk, even if. There are advantages to be gained by working with a firm that has developed very strong relationships with underwriters
“
and insurance companies over the years and as a result, can leverage this to bring a client a better insurance rating. 5. This sounds too good to be true, why is everybody not doing this? More than likely, they have not yet been made aware of it. It is also human nature to ignore death and unfortunately, this often results in harsh financial consequences. Each person has a limit to the amount of life insurance they may qualify for, usually based on their estimated estate tax liability, business interest or charitable involvement; they may, or may not, qualify for life insurance premium financing at a later date. This is not “something for nothing” or “free insurance”, as the premiums are paid for and an insured person is expending their insurable capacity. Not everybody qualifies and clients should understand the risks and rewards relative to this or any product that proposes to enhance the family’s net worth. Lions that Roar BY PATRICIA C. FRANK There are two important symbols outside the New York Public Library. The legendary lions that flank the Fifth Avenue entrance both welcome and protect. They are very aptly named Patience and Fortitude. Their presence is inspirational and suggests the virtues that are necessary for a successful and happy life. Fortitude can be defined as courage in adversity. Courage is the ability to disregard fear and to be undaunted by obstacles. It implies the kind of spunk and nerve that is one of the key ingredients of bravery. You must be confident, daring and very determined in your life. Without fortitude you will not achieve your goals. What if you are overwhelmed with adversity and do not have confidence in your ability to overcome the obstacles in your life? How can you learn to be fearless and courageous, like a lion and change the negatives into positives? You have to start by completely accepting yourself. You have to find a way to believe in yourself and in your own unique and special abilities. Focus only on your strengths.
Patience is equally important because without the ability to endure you may give up before you reach your goal. It is important to persevere and to be persistent. If you give up you have no chance at all. Patience suggests not only waiting but bearing with something over time until it comes to fruition. You must be tenacious and stoic. If you are stoic you are calm and imperturbable. You are not shaken by doubts and fears. You know that you will succeed and achieve your dreams and attain your goals over time. The need for instant gratification will sabotage your efforts and defeat the pursuit of your goals. Patience and fortitude are admirable virtues and wonderful attributes to possess. It is easy to take these two qualities for granted and to dismiss them. Although spoken of to children, their message is often forgotten in the hustle and bustle of daily cares and obligations. How fortunate to have the lions to remind everyone of the key elements necessary to be happy, successful and triumphant in life. You can benefit from their message anywhere in the world. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 212-308-0309, 305-788-4864.

Looking for work? The job market may improve soon
Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY Jobs are available in South Florida, so job hunters need to focus their efforts on improving their resumes and getting ready to head back to work. This was the main message from CBS4’s Career Fair. Like hundreds of job seekers all over South Florida, Margarita Quiles has her good days and her bad days. The former Broward Banker said, “At first I was gung-ho and really working hard looking for work. But after a while, I felt bad because I wasn’t getting a job for work I was qualified for, and I really feel bad about myself and the fact that I can’t get a job.
For this reason, Quiles came out to the CBS4 Your Money Career Counseling and Diversity Job Fair in Davie on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. She was joined by several hundred other job seekers looking for the latest job strategies. Career counselors and employment specialists forecast South Florida hiring to start improving later this fall. They urge everyone who is looking for a job to research where they want their next job to be and to do all they can to get ready for it right now. LET’S TALK CARS The Cobalt is Chevrolet’s “high value” automobile and, overall, it’s a pretty snazzy little vehicle. It’s sporty looking, delivers a smooth, quiet ride and handles very responsively, all at a pretty reasonable price. Available in coupe and sedan body styles, Cobalt has a sleek design with a low-slung body and a fast roofline. The “aircraft-style” doors are integrated into the exterior surface for a tight, flush fit and give the car a solid appearance. The coupe has a sportier look with its tapered, reverse C-pillars that lead to the four round taillights. Other design details include the Chevy-signature horizontal grille bar and gold bowtie insignia, single-cavity headlights with all forward lighting functions contained in the same unit (except for the foglamps); different
rear fascias for sedans and coupes, and a family of wheel sizes ranging from 15inch to 18-inch. The Chrome Exterior Package for LT sedan models includes a chrome grille, body-side moldings, exhaust tip and door handles. For 2009, Chevy has added a turbocharged SS Sedan to the Cobalt lineup, one that already included LS, LT and SS Coupe models. The sedan has all of the SS Coupe’s performance, handling and styling features. Both the SS Coupe and Sedan are powered by a 2.0 liter turbocharged, intercooled Ecotec engine that uses direct injection technology to deliver a balance of performance and fuel efficiency, along with a surprisingly quick 0-60 mph clocking of 5.7 seconds. The Cobalt LS and LT models come with a 2.2-liter Ecotec engine with variable valve timing added for an increase in horsepower (148 to 155) and more efficient performance. The engine also qualifies the Cobalt as an Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle and gets an EPA-estimated 25 mpg in city driving and 37 mpg on the highway. Chevy has discontinued the Cobalt

Sport model, but the Sport Appearance Package is available on the LT model. It includes a rear spoiler, larger body-color fascias and rocker moldings; 17-inch polished aluminum wheels with performance tires; chrome exhaust tip; fog lamps; white-face sport gauges; a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob; and steering wheel audio controls. For 2009, Chevrolet has added a wide range of enhancements to the Cobalt lineup, including Bluetooth capability for wireless, hands-free cell phone connectivity and a USB port on the radio that allows iPods and similar devices to
be played through the audio system. In something of a new wrinkle, engineers have added a tire inflator kit in place of the standard spare tire to save space and weight in the Cobalt. A conventional spare tire is optional. Our test vehicle was the 2009 Chevy Cobalt LS Coupe and it had a base price of $16,660.

Recession summer is upon us. Instead of looking for a break from work, many are looking for work. Instead of wishing to get away from home, many are wishing to stay in a home. Whether wealthy, middle class, or poor, adults are worried. And when adults are worried, intentionally or not, they broadcast a signal of alarm that echoes in their children. Many parents do not pick up on their children’s distress signals because they are too deafened by their own. It is in such times that schools serve as more than a place for learning. Schools become an anchor in a community, a place of refuge for children and their families. When difficult economic choices must be made, many children in private schools return to public schools. When money is tight, children eat their breakfasts and lunches in school. In school, children can rely on routine, orderliness, and a place of stability when their own home environment may be in flux. A child knows what to expect from day to day in school. Now that summer is here and school is out, many parents face difficult choices about what to do with their children. Since both school and social service budgets are slashed, many spaces in summer school programs and camps
have been lost, so parents cobble together as best they can a way to have their children watched. Sometimes it is television that is the watcher as children far too young sit inside behind locked doors. Many parents are already counting the days until our schools reopen. Their reasons might be selfish, but their need is real. When the school doors reopen, our children will return. What will they face upon that return? Our school board has the basis to ensure our students return to schools that have the resources to welcome them. In tough times, it is more important than ever that our students have the resources they need. They need the books and art supplies, the paper and musical instruments, the baseballs and basketballs and footballs that are part of their school day. They need the soap and the toilet paper. They need the food for their breakfasts and lunches. They need their teachers to be there to welcome them. Our school board members have the power to provide those resources. They can raise the school board millage by .25. School boards were told by our legislators to fill the hole in education funding that they were too craven to fill. In recession summer, school board members can provide stability to the lives of children. They can do the job they were elected to do.

‘Holding Patterns’ BY BARI AUERBACH If you tend to put healthful eating “on hold” whenever you go out to eat at a restaurant, then it’s time to say, “Stop! Hold everything!” It is actually possible to dine out without pigging out and then regretting it the next day. So hold on tight to your calorie counters ‘cause you’re about to get a crash course in “holding patterns” as they apply to the fine art of ordering – otherwise known as how to torture your server… Hold the fries! Just because you didn’t specifically ask for French fries with your meal, doesn’t mean you’re not going to automatically get them. Then there they are on the plate – shamelessly tempting you to eat just one, which invariably turns into “all but one.” So next time you order a burger or sandwich make sure those fries, formerly immersed in artery-clogging oil, don’t ever make it to your table. Instead of the fries, opt for brown rice, a sweet potato - or ask for vegetables “steamed” – otherwise they can come just as oily as the fries would have been and that would kind of defeat the purpose of making the sacrifice! Hold the mayo! That innocent looking turkey sub on whole grain bread with lettuce and tomato was just corrupted by an overzealous mayonnaise squirter behind the counter! So next time you order your sub, don’t forget to ask for mustard instead of mayo – or if you’re feeling adventurous, sub the mayo on your sub with red wine vinegar, salsa or a fat free salad dressing. Hold the bread! Have you ever been on a roll when it comes to losing weight and then on the weekend, you go out to a restaurant and make the mistake of arriving hungry. The waiter brings over a basket of rolls and then long before your dinner ever arrives, you’ve filled up on bread while conversing and now the whole basket is empty! Ultimately, the best way to “rise to the occasion” and stick to your diet is to ask the waiter to “hold” the bread completely.

In the interest of calorie-saving strategies, it’s also a good idea not to order appetizers like spinach dip with chips. If you thought, “How bad can it be – it’s just spinach” – think again. There’s usually a ton of melted cheese involved and since you’re never going to “eat just one” chip, you’re much better off having a salad to start instead. Of course, don’t forget to hold the fattening dressing and get balsamic vinegar. Hold the sauce! It’s always a good idea not to get “sauced” when you’re dining out! Most often, whatever kind of chicken, fish or steak you’re ordering can be prepared with the sauce on the side – thus allowing you to monitor the amount that winds up being consumed. *Note: In the spirit of saving calories, the dipping method is always best as opposed to pouring it on! So now that you know just some of the “holding patterns” that will do wonders for your waistline, you don’t have to put your plans to eat out on hold anymore! Just don’t sabotage all your efforts by ordering the ice cream sundae for dessert and thinking it’s OK because you said, “Hold the whipped cream!”

WEEKLY HOROSCOPES Aries - You may have the kind of experience that only makes sense in retrospect this week a learning experience involving money, values, friendship and children. You may find yourself passing along your values about hard work or family values to your own children or someone else's. Be careful if it is the latter - your values may not be in line with their parent's!
Libra - Your spiritual beliefs, the power of prayer, or the peace granted by meditation techniques could all come in handy when you are fighting your temper this week. You want to get something done, but a partner or associate is getting in the way with some selfish concerns.
Taurus - You are likely very popular and in
frustrating, and while you struggle to make sense of your friends and companions, it seems like they are doing their level best to be inscrutable. A financial or business partnership is more promising and less frustrating this week.
demand this week. You can almost get away with murder, as long as you are honest and sincere in what you say. Someone that you care for deeply needs a verbal kick in the pants, and you only need to remember to be loving and compassionate when you deliver it.
Gemini - You may have some confusing experiences while meditating or during prayer this week. Your spiritual energies are still at a peak, but the psychic insight you count on may not be totally reliable. You could get confusing and conflicting impressions.
Cancer - You will have a happier and more harmonious week if you avoid getting into political, spiritual or financial arguments with a friend or companion. They may be acting like and opinionated so and so right now, but you won't have the energy to argue with them.
Leo - You'll be dancing up and down the social ladder this week. While you may end up a rung or two higher when it is all over be sure you bring along some balm for the hands and feet you tread on when you are wildly swinging along right now. Tarzan could swing through the trees without harm - you may hit an obstacle or two along the path this week. Virgo - You are feeling very reflective, thoughtful and introspective. You might have acted rashly recently, and the consequences have you second-guessing yourself. Accept yourself, love yourself, forgive yourself and move on in confidence!

Scorpio - Your love life is confusing and
Sagittarius - You need some playtime, but you may find that it is impossible to pull yourself away from work, chores and duties this week. A friend may be trying to encourage you to "run away from home", but their motivation is a little selfish - they want your company. Capricorn - You'll feel twitchy this week and won't be sure why. You may find yourself in the middle of a heated discussion asking yourself "Why does this matter so much to me?" The answer is that "it", whatever "it" may be, triggers emotions dating back to old childhood disappointments. Aquarius - You are at the centre of a controversy in your family this week. Normally you avoid being the centre of attention, but here you may have no choice. You don't have to live up to other people's demands and expectations. Being true to your right path is the only choice, and only you can decide what is right now. Pisces - A family member may be able to help you untie your tongue a bit, but only if you let them. You will feel torn about revealing a secret or keeping it inside. Be careful to confide only in someone who has the wisdom and maturity to be helpful right now. 1000 Kane Concourse Bay Harbor, FL 33154
